Chapter 8: From Dresses to Disco
I don’t have a huge wardrobe but, generally, I can lay hands on an outfit for most situations. For work, if I’m not in scrubs, I tend to wear plain black trousers and a shirt; for relaxing, I have more than enough jeans, leggings and comfy sweaters; for holidays, I have the usual range of shorts, t-shirts and sundresses.
I realise as I flick through the hangers in my wardrobe that what I am missing are outfits in the ‘dinner-dance-purely-platonic-plus-one’ category. And, what’s more, I don’t actually know how formal this thing is going to be.
Jamie was no use at all when I spoke to him about it.
“What sort of thing will your sister be wearing?” I asked as we met for coffee and a bacon sandwich two days ago.
“I dinna ken. A dress?” He hazarded a guess, looking a bit perplexed that I would even ask him.
“Long or short?” I persisted.
“Yes.”
“Well, which? Long or short?”
“Aye, one of them.”
“What are you wearing then... kilt? Black tie? Lounge suit?” This might give me a clue as to the dress code.
“I dare say I’ll be wearing a suit and tie.”
And that was as much assistance as I got from him.
I make the decision to go short. Partly because I don’t want to feel overdressed on Saturday, but mainly because the only long dress I have in my possession was purchased for a university Medics’ ball in 2008. And it’s crinkly satin with a side split and a wide leather belt that went with an over the top diamanté headband around my forehead.
Obviously, I will never wear it again, but I’m loath to part with it anyway. It reminds me of my time at university. Plus, it may come in handy… for a fancy dress party perhaps?
********
Geillis has decided, on the spur of the moment, to ‘jes’ pop ‘round fer a wee glass of wine’. That’s just a cover. What she actually wants is a ‘wee glass of wine’ while supervising my dress selection.
She takes a sip and reclines on my bed, casting a critical eye as I pull a few dresses out of my wardrobe and lay them next to her.  She’s not giving much away as she continues to study them.
“Well?” I stand at the end of the bed and stare at her, waiting for her comments.
“I canna give ye ma answer ‘till I’ve seen them all,” she replies.
“That’s it. That’s all my fancy evening dresses.”
She stares at me in disbelief, before gazing once more at the three dresses displayed on the bed.
“Ye dinna have any more cocktail dresses, then?”
I shake my head. “‘Fraid not. When I go cocktail drinking, I tend to wear something more casual. There’s not a great call for fancy frocks when it’s two for one cocktails at the ‘Slug and Lettuce’.”
She sighs very loudly and grimaces. We’ve had these conversations often enough over the years. She despairs about my lack of interest in fashion. It’s true, I can’t tell a Marc Jacobs from a Marks and Spencer. Well, I possibly could, but you get my drift. I tried to be fashionable back in 2008 and look where it got me— wearing a dress that resembled a sweetie wrapper with a headband that brought me out in a rash.
I sometimes wonder if the real reason that she has asked me to be a bridesmaid has less to do with being best friends and more to do with being able to control what I’m going to wear. I’m joking of course, it’s because we’re best friends— Geillis choosing my dress is just an added perk for her.
“So, I think ye wear this one.” She gets up, moves me to one side and quickly rifles through the wardrobe, giving a cry of triumph as she finds what she’s looking for.
I knew it—I knew she would remember that dress. She was with me when I bought it— a late night Sauvignon Blanc fuelled online purchase. She describes it as my “hello boys” dress. I’ve never worn it and this is not the occasion for its inaugural outing.
I mean, it’s a lovely dress— black with an off the shoulder bardot neckline and very, very form fitting. But totally not the message I want to send to Jamie.
I shake my head. “Nope… no way. Not that one.”
I point instead to a dress lying on the bed, originally bought for a hospital fundraiser last year. It’s very nice and infinitely more suitable— black with sparkly red splodges; a slight v neck and fitted bodice going into a flared skirt. It even has pockets.
Geillis raises her hands in exasperation. “Fine. Have it yer way. But, Claire, do ye no’ want tae mebbe try it?”
I grab the dress from her and stuff it back in the wardrobe, ignoring her last comment. But she doesn’t give up so easily.
“See what could happen, eh?”
I turn to face her. “I know what could happen. He’ll think that I’m after him and that I’ll be it. End of friendship.”
“But mebbe—“
I interrupt her. “No maybe about it. Besides all this is missing the point. I want Jamie in my life as a friend, the same way that you and Mary and Anna are in my life. I don’t want anything more from him. I don’t need any romance. Can you understand that?”
“Aye but—“
She’s still not willing to drop the subject and I’ve had enough. I drain my glass of wine and start to walk out of the bedroom.
“No buts. That’s it. Just drop it, please.” At the doorway, I pause. “Now, do you want another glass?”
She starts to follow me. “Of course. And sorry,Claire, I dinna mean tae annoy ye. It’s jes’—“ she stops herself before saying anymore.
“Ok... Shall we order a takeaway, then?”
As I head into the living room, with Geillis following, I’m pretty sure I can hear her muttering under her breath about taking chances.
***************
Jamie said he would pick me up at seven. I’m clearly still working on Frank time, as I’m ready with fifteen minutes to spare. I perch on the edge of a chair, trying not to crease my dress, smudge my mascara or run my fingers through my hair.
I must admit, I have enjoyed the whole formal dressing up process. It’s not something I do too often— my socialising tends to be of a more relaxed nature. But this makes a welcome change.
With five minutes to spare, the bell rings. I gather up my pashmina and clutch bag and make my way downstairs, my high heeled sandals making a clacking sound against the old floor tiles.
Jamie is waiting outside, next to his old french blue Triumph Stag sports car. Like he said, he’s wearing a suit—dark grey instead of his usual navy blue. Still with a white shirt and a rust coloured paisley tie. His auburn curls nestle against his jacket collar. He looks immaculate.
In a parody of a chauffeur, he touches his forelock, bows and opens the passenger door for me. “M’lady,” he adds with his customary half grin.
“Thank you, Parker,” I reply primly and arrange my skirt under me as he scoots around to the driver side.
I do like this car. It’s old, a bit threadbare in places and smells slightly of damp. But it positively oozes vintage style and glamour. Fortunately the hardtop is on as the clouds are gathering ominously overhead.
“I thought we were getting a taxi. Are you not drinking?” I ask as he starts to drive.
Keeping his eyes on the road, he snorts with laughter. “No’ drinking? What kind of rugby ‘do’ d’ye think this is? No, I’ll leave the car at the club and we can get a taxi, if that’s ok wi’ ye.”
We drive on in silence for a couple of miles. Not an awkward silence, just a we-don’t-really-have-to -make-small-talk kind of silence.
“I’d have thought you’d be wearing a kilt tonight.” I comment.
“Hmm, weel, I do like tae wear it fer special occasions, but, when the rugby lads get together, who kens what can happen. Trousers tend tae be the safer option.”
“You could always wear underpants,” I suggest.
He looks horrified at the suggestion. “Dinna be saying that tae a true Scot, Sassenach.”
“I consider myself suitably chastised.”
“Glad ye realise that.” He smiles and changes the subject totally. “Sae, on our table this evening, there’ll be ma sister Jenny and her husband Ian, and Rupert, ye ken Rupert, and his wife Morag.”
“Oh, so you know Rupert— outside of work, I mean.”
“Aye, we grew up together. And Ian too. Mind, he was a couple of years older than Rupert and me— same age as Jenny—and always used tae follow her around like a wee pup. I’ve only known Morag a couple of years though. She’s nice but verra quiet. She lets Rupert do most of the talking.”
“I liked Rupert.”
“He’s a great bloke. Best decision I made, asking him tae join me at FraserFoods. Ian’s a great bloke too. Ye’ll like him.”
Jamie pulls the car into the rugby club car park,  and switches the engine off. He sits still for a moment, staring through the windscreen. I can hear music coming from the large marquee lit up with lanterns and residing on one of the rugby pitches. Even though it’s early in the evening, there’s plenty of raucous laughter coming from that direction too. No doubt the bar has already seen plenty of action.
“Well?” I elbow him in the ribs.
“Sorry. I was jes’ thinking about how best tae describe Jenny.” He turns and smiles. “She’s the best sister a chap could want and a true friend— once she gets tae know ye. She can be a wee bit, shall we say, prickly, at first. And she thinks she kens what’s best fer me, as only a big sister can. She thinks ma life is no’ complete… no’ wi’out a wife and a couple of bairns.”
“Have you explained that this isn’t a date… that we’re friends?”
“Aye, I’ve told her that,” he gives a little laugh and nods his head towards the marquee.  “Sae she’ll most likely be in there right now scouring the place fer any suitable contenders.”
He gets out of the car and is at the passenger door before I’ve had a chance to unfasten my seatbelt and gather my pashmina around my shoulders.
“M’lady,” resuming the chauffeur role, he opens the door for me.
I clamber out, somewhat ungainly and wait as he locks the car. Even with my highest heels on, I still have to crane my neck to look at him as he stands up straight and adjusts his jacket.
“Shall we?” He gestures the marquee with his hand.
“God, yes. I could do with a gin and tonic. I’m parched.” Plus, I reckon I need a stiff drink or two down my throat before I meet Jenny. She sounds formidable.
“C’mon then.” And he leads the way into the marquee.

Balter: BOTW Robbie x Reader
15. balter - to dance gracelessly, but with enjoyment
(Robbie x Reader)
Part I of ?
It’s day one of being assigned as an assistant to the Chief of Guardian Research, and you don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
“This is a great honour,” your research supervisor—ex-supervisor, said. They smiled at you tearily like a proud parent, fixing the collar of your shirt and patting away the non-existent dirt on your shoulders. Both of you had decided together on an outfit that was functional but boringly business casual, something that screamed ‘This job is serious and I too am seriously serious.’
“Teach,” you say, bending down to look the elderly scholar in the eye. They’ve been frantic the entire morning, packing and repacking your things, double checking your itinerary and quizzing you on random topics for the past five hours (“What is the integral of the absolute sin, x, over the interval 0 to two pi?” “Four, and how is this relevant?”) You try to smile in a way that is both calming and trustworthy. “I’m going to be alright. We’ve gone over all the possibilities together yesterday, everything from A to Z remember?”
Grabbing their cane, they picked up your suitcase, wagging their finger when you reached to take it from their smaller, wrinkly hands. “Yes, yes. But one can never be too careful.” Walking to the exit of the academy, both of you pushed open the double doors, a field of wildflowers greeting you on the other side.
A bright blue sky hung above, cloudless and empty. Your horse was grazing not too far away, ears pricking up at the sound of your approach. Before planting your foot into the stirrup, your supervisor called out your name, prompting you to turn around. Pulling their coat close to them self, they wrapped their short arms around you, enveloping you in a rare hug. “Just, keep your wits about you.”
“Why is that?”
“Doctor Robbie is a little eccentric.”
“Nothing I can’t handle, Teach.” You winked, squeezing them a little tighter. “I’ve worked with you after all.” The air shifts when you spot a cane spinning in the air, the hardwood eventually smacking painfully into your side and making you yelp.
“Stupid child,” the centenarian grins. “I wish you luck and a prosperous future.”
With the Royal Highway in your sights, your thoughts were filled with a whirlwind of excitement at the prospect of working with such a bright mind. Focusing your thesis on the newly excavated Guardian’s design and its sophisticated targeting system had spiraled into a series of meetings with the King’s scientific panel and eventually a position at a lab beyond the imaginations of both you and your Sheikah supervisor.
An hour had sped by and before you knew it, the imposing entrance to the Royal Ancient Tech Lab loomed over you like a giant’s shadow. The secure metal doors were decorated with a pattern of tumultuous swirls and waves, stretching from the edges and across the vast surface like creeping vines on a stone wall. Raising your hand to knock, you were surprised to hear the unmistakable boom of a small explosion on the other side.
Pulling down the handle, the door opened with little resistance, a black cloud of smoke filling your nostrils and making you splutter. “Anyone there?” You called out. Leaving your suitcase at the entrance, you cautiously stepped into the fray, dress shoes squeaking against the floor. Looking around, the first thing you spot are three long stone tables littered with gears and springs of various sizes. The next is the smoking carcass of half a Guardian in the corner.
You stared at the ancient machine, unable to compute.
“Over here!”
Whipping around, your eyes scanned the room.
“Ah, behind the table.” The voice said sheepishly.
Rushing towards it, you quickly vaulted over to the other side, finding a young man on the floor. You blinked, silent as he rubbed his head and groaned, readjusting the metal goggles that sat heavy above his eyes. Taking in his appearance was...overwhelming. He looked, well, rather odd for starters.
His coiffed white hair was combed back and above his forehead in a style you’ve never seen before, fanning out like a peacock’s feathers. It possessed a volume that was miraculously intact despite the blast, making you wonder if he employed some sort of chemical to keep it that way.
The Sheikah uniform that he wore was cream in colour and soot stained from the explosion earlier. You noticed that he’d made a few minor adjustments, rolling his shirt sleeves above the elbows and foregoing the usual navy inner layer completely, giving him a ridiculous V-neck that seemed to go on and on...and oh Goddesses you were staring now. How long have you been staring at him for?
Quick, your brain screamed. Say something, maybe he hasn’t noticed.
You blurted out the first thing in your mind: (well, second. The first was ‘is your hair held up by witchcraft?’ and that probably wouldn’t roll too well.) “Are you okay?”
Reaching out, you offered him a hand up, shocked when he grasped it with no hesitation. His grip was strong but not uncomfortable, and with your help he managed to stand with little trouble.
The grin that he gave in reply was infectious. “I am now, thanks to you.” He had a nice smile. In fact, now that you think about it, his voice was rather nice too. Smooth and—not the time to do this brain!
Releasing your hand, he took a step back, surveying the damage and mess around him. He cleared his throat. “Hm, apologies for the...everything that you see around you right now. I wanted to test a hypothesis regarding the activation of the Guardian’s defense mechanism even whilst inert.” Picking up a fallen gear, he polished it with the edge of his charred shirt and placed it on the table. “Evidently, I got my answer,” he laughed. “So in a way the experiment was a success.”
Oh, he’s a scientist here, you gathered. Great, maybe he could help you find your boss. “Actually, I was wondering if you knew where one of the Directors of this lab was? His name is Doctor Robbie. I’m the new research assistant.” You felt a shock of warmth threatening to creep up your neck, feeling silly at needing to ask a colleague for assistance this early in the day.
His smile widened, your blush rising to your face like mercury in a thermometer. “Know where he is? Why, of course I do.” In the blink of an eye, he stuck his hand in the air, striking a pose that was so charming and silly that you wondered if you’d inhaled too much toxic smoke earlier and was currently hallucinating on the fumes.
“You’re in luck,” he announced. “For the ‘Doctor Robbie’ you’re looking for is none other than I.”
Oh. It was no use, your embarrassment was reaching an all time high and at this point the smartest option was to stop fighting and let the blush takeover and run its course. Trying and failing to hide your shock, you don’t notice the Doctor’s pose wilt at the lack of your response.
Take a deep breath and do it again, your supervisor— ex-supervisor’s voice echoed like an angry phantom that refused to leave your head. Slowly recovering, you bowed low, the seventy degree angle pulling the muscles in your back. “Forgive me, I didn’t know.” You say your name quickly and in one breath. “Pleased to meet you.”
Straightening up, you were relieved at the lack of anger or annoyance in his face. Even with the goggles, it was easy to tell that the Doctor’s expression was relaxed, and if anything, just a tad worried. “The pleasure is all mine. You have nothing to be sorry for, and please, there’s no need to be so formal.”
“Got it. If you show me where the written reports are kept, I can start organising the data as soon as possible.”
“Hmm? Oh, we can worry about that later.” Folding his arms across his chest, Doctor Robbie gracefully spun on his heels, walking towards the Guardian head that tried to set him on fire only minutes ago. “What I need you to do is to grab a crowbar from the table and some gloves.”
“How come?”
Fearlessly knocking on the ancient machine’s temple, he moved to face you, that enigmatic smile back on his face as the gears on his goggles began to turn. “We’re going to see what makes this beauty tick.”

Once at avenue stage again, vacationers can then view the vibrant markets and temples. Japanese Grandma's Cafe Some folks say that it is a sign the primary order was taken while others say it simply offers prospects something to eat whereas ready for the relaxation of their meals to arrive. A feast here builds towards a delicate climax, asparagus tips with pristine lobes of uni leading to silky black cod with watercress sauce and crumbled pistachios. Beautiful pink slivered duck breast with smoky charred eggplant yields to earthy stewed pork cheeks with cider discount and inexperienced apple puree. Branch out and verify out a close-by restaurant that provides traditional Japanese steaks in an upscale setting. Since 1993, Decibel has been an trade favourite beloved for its no-frills ambiance, broad selection of one hundred fifty sakes, and late hours. Every day apart from Sunday for Japanese bar food like okonomiyaki , takowasa , and ankimo . This duo of fast-casual noodle outlets is all about Japan’s udon, either in warming soups or simply lightly sauced, with easy, mostly basic toppings like a thick slab of fried tofu. Order your noodles, then choose from a bevy of tempura for topping and dipping. The U District location is students galore; the model new one in Capitol Hill’s 12th Avenue Arts constructing has a calmer vibe. The shiny, warmly lit industrial space within the lobby of the Via6 flats is the Asian fusion joint Tom Douglas has been hinting at for years. One of a tangle of Douglas businesses including a coffeehouse and a gift shop, the setup can be complicated (is this patio desk on the market or am I in one other restaurant?). It’s price it although; the time and effort put into the restaurant’s theme doesn’t overshadow the quality of the food. I extremely advocate Ninja Akasaka to anyone craving wonderfully cheesy entertainment and respectable food. The shade of the dish signifies the price with each plate costing between one hundred and 150 yen. This is a good different and a less expensive approach to get pleasure from sushi. If you don't discover what you want then it is attainable to order one thing. Public Baths In Japan Most Japanese sizzling springs are situated inside or close to a volcanic area, and it is estimated that there are more than 2,500 hot springs in Japan. An Onsen is a Japanese hot spring with a water temperature that tempered anyplace between 104 to one hundred forty levels Fahrenheit. Onsen friends generally deliver a small towel with them to make use of as a wash cloth. The towel can even present a modicum of modesty when walking between the washing space and the baths. Some onsen allow one to wear the towel into the baths, whereas others have posted indicators prohibiting this, saying that it makes it more durable to wash the bathtub. It is in opposition to the rules to immerse or dip towels in the onsen tub water, since this might be thought of unclean. People normally set their towels off to the side of the water when enjoying the baths, or place their folded towels on top of their heads. Among the resort's hottest baths are the large riverside rotemburo of Takaragawa Onsen and the traditonal, wood indoor baths of secluded Hoshi Onsen. People come to the onsen to loosen up, so friends must be considerate of the environment. Japan Household Holidays & Vacations Lovers of animals and the ocean will get pleasure from Japan’s spectacular aquariums. Since Japan is an island nation, its tradition and history will at all times be tied to the ocean. Also, there’re dangerous people on the market but more terrible are the police, who just stops you for nothing and illegally arrest you. The police can cease you however answering to what they say is by legislation OPTIONAL, however they are saying that it is MANDATORY. Thus, if you plan on spending a number of days in Tokyo and may full the Kyoto/Osaka trip within every week, I’d go with rail passes for sheer convenience. While not as off the beaten path because it was up to now, most households still overlook Japan in favor of extra “conventional” household journey locations. So if you are pondering of a special household trip, filled with unique experiences together, Japan is an amazing destination for teenagers and adults. Summer In Japan Make positive you guide tickets in advance as it often sells out, and arrive simply before opening. I undoubtedly advocate staying nearby if you want to go to the neighbouring Disneyland Tokyo park as nicely as you’ll need two full days. There are many enjoyable rides at DisneySea in addition to extra adult-orientated sights like seeing a Broadway present or ingesting a cocktail in a 1920s lounge aboard a cruise liner. Make positive you get a global driving permit from your own home country earlier than you come to Japan as they're strict about this requirement. In Fukuoka, the Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival celebrates among 1,000 cherry timber with meals cubicles and picnickers beneath timber in full bloom. Also in early April, greater than 1,500 folks dressed as samurai warriors gather in Kofu, Yamanashi, for a large cosplay honouring the region’s samurai history. This island additionally serves as a venue of art festivals and gatherings, and it hosts loads of museums dedicated to artwork. The structure current on this island is amongst the best issues to see in Japan, most of which was designed by well-known architect, Ando Tadao. It might be a tiny island but it’s totally full of museums and galleries, and in all places you look, you’ll see beautiful views. Spots like Miyako Island, Ishigaki Island, and Yoron Island are a few of the finest diving spots in the area, though all of Japan’s waters are amazing to explore. A traditional Japanese activity is enjoying a bowl of matcha in a traditional tea house accompanied by wagashi, lovely sweets usually created from rice, red beans, and sugar. Overlooking the river you'll find a way to experience a unique Ferris wheel in the building of the large Don Quixote store . It’s the strangest wanting Ferris wheel as it’s built onto the facade of the shop and you experience in a capsule that follows an oval shape up to seventy seven metres high with views of the river and metropolis. In Tokyo you may get a free view from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku or get pleasure from VR rides along with the city skyline at the Sky Circus Sunshine 60 Observation Deck in Ikebukuro. Tokyo Tower is another popular viewpoint and looks like a pink Eiffel Tower.

Black and White (Part VI)
Part I | Part II | Part III | Part IV | Part V | Part VI | Part VII | Part VIII | Part IX | Part X
Remus sat on the edge of his bed, careful not to wrinkle his suit too much. His fingers were folded tightly over his lap, his leg bouncing up and down from nerves. He had left work half an hour early to shower and prepare for Sirius' arrival; he didn't realize the man would be so late.
It was already quarter past when there was a knock on the door, startling Remus out of his thoughts. The artist stood up, attempted to smooth out his pants, and headed towards the entrance of his flat. When he opened the door, he was greeted with the smug half-smirk of Sirius Black.
"Hello, Mr. Lupin."
"Um… hello, Si— Mr. Black"
Remus held his hand out. Sirius glanced down at it as if this was the first time anyone had offered him a handshake. After a momentary pause, he grasped Remus' hand firmly before pulling away.
"Are you going to invite me in, or shall I stay out here all evening?"
I'd rather the latter, to be honest.
Remus forced a smile on his lips and moved out of the way, motioning for Sirius to head inside.
"Please," he said, his tone overly polite. "Come in."
Sirius entered the apartment, stopping in the centre of the room and gazing around. As he watched the gallery owner analyze the tiny flat, Remus' heart sank.
"Charming," Sirius muttered, loud enough for Remus to hear. The artist narrowed his eyes in anger, his nails digging into the palms of his hands.
"I'm sure it's not as nice as you're used to," Remus retorted, trying— and failing— to keep the contempt and loathing out of his voice. He was beginning to regret ever meeting Sirius Black.
"No, it's not," Sirius mumbled, heading towards an easel in the corner of the room. Remus opened his mouth to answer, but Sirius cut him off. "What's this?"
Remus glanced over at the painting and his heart skipped a beat; he had forgotten that he was working on that specific piece earlier in the day. He had intended to put it away before Sirius arrived, but it had slipped his mind.
"It— it's just a painting," Remus insisted, heading towards Sirius and the easel in the hopes of redirecting the gallerist's attention. "Something I was working on this morning..."
"I like this one."
You would.
The painting was of an image that Remus had been struggling to shake from his mind all week: piercing grey eyes and a sharp jawline, refined features that exuded confidence. It was a face that was impossible for Remus to forget, despite how hard he tried.
Tumblr media
"I have others. This one isn't finis— "
Sirius turned around, leering at Remus, a predatory smirk crossing his lips. He straightened his posture and ran a hand through his hair, brushing his bangs from his eyes. He cocked a perfectly sculpted eyebrow and simply stared. Remus opened his mouth and closed it, vaguely resembling a distraught fish, before finally finding his words.
"Mr. Black, I can— "
Sirius took a step towards Remus, raising a hand to the artist's face, his fingers barely grazing against skin. Remus felt his face ignite, his cheeks burning beneath the heat of Sirius' gaze. Grey eyes flicked down and up again, analyzing the man standing before them.
"Mr. Lupin, there are easier ways to get my attention."
"That wasn't—" Remus stammered, taking a step back and almost tripping over a can of gesso.
"I've had plenty of portraits commissioned in my time, but none have captured me quite so… genuinely."
"This isn't—"
"There's no need to be shy, Mr. Lupin. You wouldn't be the first artist who's been quite taken with me."
"I'm not— "
Sirius took another step forward, leaning into Remus' personal space, intrusive and purposeful. As his lips neared Remus', the artist raised his hands, placing them firmly on the other man's chest, before pushing him away.
"Stop! Mr. Black, what the hell are you doing?!"
Sirius stumbled back from the force of Remus' shove, pausing for a moment before collecting himself. He swept his hair out of his eyes and grinned at Remus, as if nothing was amis.
"Making sure your intentions are pure. I don't want an artist who wants to show in my gallery as a way of getting into my pants after all." Sirius gave a nonchalant shrug, feigning innocence. Despite the smile on his lips, Remus could have sworn that he noticed a flash of disappointment clouding silver eyes and a subtle flush creeping across porcelain cheeks.
"Trust me," Remus growled, barely containing his disdain for the other man, "I have absolutely no intention of doing anything of the sort. I am a professional." He emphasised his last word with a venomous bite, seeing past Sirius' feigned innocence.
"Good," Sirius shot back, a glint of malice in his intense gaze.
"Good," Remus spat, squaring his shoulders and clenching his jaw.
Sirius gave Remus a once over, from his toes to the tip of his curls, before running a hand through his hair and turning around.
"I've seen enough. I'll let you know my decision in the near future, Mr. Lupin." Sirius began striding towards the front door before Remus had a chance to absorb his words.
"Wait!"
Sirius glanced over his shoulder, cocking an eyebrow, the edge of his mouth curling upwards ever so slightly.
"Yes?"
"I…" Remus didn't want Sirius to leave on a bad note; the artist knew it would have a direct effect on his career. "I'm sorry. I just… please, Mr. Black, I would very much like to show in your gallery." In his mind, Remus knew it was pathetic to resort to grovelling, but he didn't have very many options available to him.
Sirius raised his chin, his smirk growing wider. Remus noted how much the gallerist enjoyed being in the position of power, the way he relished in Remus' pleading.
"It takes a strong work ethic and a consistent style to be able to show with me. Is that something you're prepared for, Mr. Lupin?"
"Yes." Remus knew he had what it took to impress Sirius Black, now he just needed to keep his temper around the insufferable man. "I'm prepared for anything."
"Very well. We'll be in touch regarding my decision."
In an instant, Sirius was gone and Remus was left alone in his tiny flat, feeling frustrated and humiliated. Black and White had better provide some fantastic opportunities to make this whole song and dance worth the trouble.

Observers - 26
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes x Reader
Warnings: Insecurities and fears
A/N: Very long cab ride.
Tumblr media
You practically tore apart your closet trying to find something appropriate for the weather that also fit Sherlock’s demands and came up empty-handed. Resigning yourself to hoping he didn’t want you to run around outside for very long, you picked a sleek black pencil skirt that hit you mid-thigh and an off white button down with a v neck that showed a tasteful amount of cleavage. You paired the simple outfit with a set of patent heels in a bright teal, a matching teal scarf, and warm aubergine purple cardigan. Having no idea how much time you had before he decided it was time to go, you dumped your make-up on the counter in an effort to find the berry colored lipstick you wanted.  It wasn’t an easy feat as you hadn’t been kidding when you said you were a lipstick junkie, poking through over twenty different shades of lipstick and a handful of glosses before you found the one you had in mind. You kept your make-up classic with a dusting of gold eye shadow and winged black liner across your lids with full lashes, all balanced with the strong opaque berry toned lipstick. You were just finishing pulling your hair up into an appropriate style with some strands falling around your face to soften it, when there was a loud thunk and then a knock on your door. You smirked- you may not have learned the first time, but Van Gogh be damned if he was going to fling your door open a third time without knocking. You went to unlock the door, fighting the urge to giggle as you put a hand on your hip, “Problem, Sherlock?”
He narrowed his eyes at you as he rubbed at his shoulder where it had hit the door, “It was locked.”
A small laugh escaped your lips, “Obviously. That’s why you knock.” Your words fell on deaf ears as his attention turned from the troubling state of your door to your appearance, his eyes trailing over your form from the floor up. He felt like his heart stopped beating for a minute and his mind momentarily short-circuited before kicking back up at breakneck speed to take in every single detail of your outfit and your legs and your curves and your… unamused expression.
“If you're quite done molesting me with your eyes, Sherlock, I’d like to get whatever this theory is tested and over with.” He gave you his own unamused look before turning to walk out of the flat, “You look... presentable.” You rolled your eyes, having caught the smile that he’d been trying to hide as he turned, and took a moment to look him over as you followed him out the door. It was hard to tell if he was dressed differently than he usually was because of his ever-present trench coat and scarf. Once the two of you were bundled into a cab, sitting across from each other, you looked out the window and wondered what this was all about. Sherlock had been very pleasant to you today. You assumed it was because he knew about the nightmare and his role in it and while nice it was a little disconcerting. He’d succeed in reassuring you that he would never lay a hand on you in that way but there was still the troubling matter of your painting. There was also this niggling fear that your ex would somehow know you’d not only started up your work again but that you had a strange quasi-relationship with your brother’s flatmate. You thought about what would happen if he did manage to find you, the punishment you’d receive, not realizing you were holding your breath until your vision blurred and you sucked in a sharp gulp of air to compensate. You cursed yourself, knowing that Sherlock definitely noticed that, and prayed he wouldn’t push anything because you weren’t in the mood to indulge him in his deductions, especially when it came to this. You took a slow deep breath and went over color theory and cross-hatching techniques in your head to keep your thoughts from wandering dangerously into memories or imagined scenarios, hoping to reassure your subconscious that that part of your life was over now. Sherlock opted to look at you instead of out the window as you were. The last time he’d seen you in anything other than a jumper and jeans was when you’d gone out after the unfortunate mug incident. He was beginning to think an obsession with jumpers was something that ran in your family, as both you and John seemed to have an unending supply. This time he could take in your attire with a little more interest than the first time as he’d been in denial then. It was always fascinating to him that just a change of clothes and appropriate make-up could make most men see a woman in an entirely different light. Up till now, he couldn’t understand it; he still didn’t to an extent… it was so base. A change in appearance could hardly change if they were terribly dull or not, so the new attraction was purely physical. Considering this when he looked you over, he found that maybe when one was already content with another’s intelligence and personality the addition of enhanced physical attraction was much more enjoyable and at the very least interesting. His gaze seemed to have a mind of its own, finding your legs, lips, and chest more often than he was even aware of, and he couldn’t seem to stop chewing on the inside of his lower lip. Internally he was much the same, his heart seemed to vary in rates from dangerously slow to treacherously fast and his mind was conjuring up some very interesting images. This was by far his most complex experiment involving you and the results were already fascinating.
He was so busy observing himself that he almost missed the pained expression flash across your face before you took an audible and fast breath of air. Almost.
Looking you over, he came to the realization that you were very good at hiding your thoughts from him. Sure he could easily read you- what you had done during the day, how you were feeling, things like that- but what actually went through your mind was somewhat of a mystery to him. Normally he didn’t care, you gave him clues in your actions so he didn’t feel the need to know, but now you were sitting, unmoving, with your face showing only the slightest signs of being troubled and he was frustrated. Something had upset you, that much was obvious, but what. His mind started to race to find an answer, using clues from earlier that day to come to a tentative conclusion: you were thinking about your ex. He moved to sit next to you, causing you to turn from the window to look at him, “Yes, Sherlock?” “Tell me.” You sighed, “There’s nothing to tell.” “There is. Don’t lie.” You chewed at the edge of your lip and looked back out the window in an effort to ignore him that was quickly thwarted when he wove his fingers between yours, making you snap back around to look at him. He was unfazed and caught you in his intense gaze, locking your eyes with his so there was no chance of escape, “Tell me.” Your voice came out soft and unsure, “What if he finds me?” You tore yourself away from his intrusive stare, “I know it’s irrational- the odds of him finding me are low- but if he did… there are so many things he would punish me for.” Sherlock’s grip on your hand tightened, “John would never allow it.”
He would never allow it. You didn’t respond, looking out the window again pensively, you knew he was right but in truth that was part of your fear, something could happen to John if it ever came to that. He could end up hurt or in jail because of you. It was a rather terrifying thought. Sherlock frowned at the back of your head, he wanted you to feel safe so you could go back to your normal habits instead of living by that man’s rules in anticipation of his return to your life. He even briefly wondered if Mycroft had any pull in France, maybe he would agree to put him in jail so you wouldn’t have to live with the uncertainty.
He was lost in his thoughts, coming up with and then dismissing various options, when you squeezed his hand and he turned to look at you in response. Surprisingly there was a smile on your face, “You’re cute when you fret.” “I'm not fretting.” he denied firmly. You just gave a knowing closed-lip smile and a small hum of amusement before looking out the window again as he scowled at you. How did you do that? How did you see these things? You weren’t supposed to know he was fretting, much less think it was cute. Sherlock Holmes, the world's only consulting detective, was anything but cute. Handsome, intelligent, arrogant, and cheeky- among other things- but certainly not cute. What did you think he was? Some sort of overgrown kitten? You giggled, drawing him from his thoughts again, and he realized he’d been making a face, which was no doubt the cause of said giggling. He opened his mouth to say something to put an end to your small bout of mirthful laughter but then thought better of it, it was far better than the worry you’d been wrapped up in just moments before even if it was at his expense.
