The thing about hairbands (especially the littler ones I use on the end of my braids) are like, you buy a pack of the little blighters and there’s millions of them in there, and you think things like “I’ll never need to buy more hairbands for the rest of my life”.  These are stupid things to think cause one day you’re gonna look at your container of hairbands and think “Didn’t I used to have more of those?” 

And then one day you’re gonna look at your container and you have like fifteen and you think “Wow I definitely used to have more of those.”

And then one day you’re down to ten. And after that it’s like a horror movie. You blink and you’re down a hairband. It’s like they’re weeping angels if all that weeping angels did was disappear and never return solely to inconvenience you.

And then one day you’re down to two. And you know you’re really in the soup now, so you guard those hairbands with your life. You meticulously return them to the same place every time you take them out. You keep them in zippered pockets of your purse when you need to take them somewhere.  And yet.

Somehow

one day you’re gonna go to grab a hairband 

and then there is one

And you look at it and you know that your hairbanded days are numbered. Within weeks, days, hours it will disappear, like a goose flying off the edge of the screen in Oregon Trail before you can shoot it. Like the One Ring abandoning Gollum in search of a way to return to its Dark Lord. Like Navi flying out the window leaving Link behind, bereft.

Beware, my fine fellows, that which once was helpful may one day become a hindrance. 

For that day is today. 

I am Link, and Navi has flown, and my hands are empty of hairbands.
