"One of our regular gigs is the West Side Community Garden Summer Concerts. The final offering of 2023 featured the luscious sounds of Afro-Haitian Jazz performed by Mozayik – led by drummer Gashford Guillaume – who has performed with Haitian superstars -- Emeline Michel and Beethova Obas. And at festivals in Amsterdam, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Haiti, Cuba, St, Lucia, Martinique and many cities around the U.S.

In 2000 Gashford and others started “Mozayik” – which is committed to the #Haitian jazz genre. I sat down with Gashford – about a week after the concert to talk about Haitian Jazz and its link to the Haitian culture at Gebhards Beer Culture Bar on the UWS."

<< Écoutez Ti Roro (Raymond Baillergeau), surnommé « Le Roi du Tambour» (@1:25 minute). C’était au début des années 50 avant Nemours Jean-Baptiste. Comme ce fut pour le cas

de Dòdòphe Legros en 1954 dans « Carnaval Péligre », on peut entendre la base de ce que Nemours Jean-Baptiste appellera plus tard Compas Direct.

Personne peut nous dire que Ti Roro imitait les Dominicains! Évidemment, Nemours les admirait à cause de leur popularité (dixit le grand arrangeur haïtien Michel Desgrottes qui a beaucoup enseigné la musique #haïtienne au milieu des années 60 à la #Guadeloupe et à la #Martinique). Mais, le rythme était déjà en Haïti. Ti Roro est sorti des entrailles de notre Vodou. Nemours l’inventeur -comme tout autre, d’ailleurs- a utilisé des éléments déjà existants pour nous présenter la résultante. C’est son génie. >>
