there is something unique and deeply special about monkey d luffy as a protagonist. he’s overwhelmingly ADORED by the fandom. he’s consistently the most or at least top 3 most popular characters in the whole series. peoples takes about him are gushingly positive. and that’s… really uncommon.
a LOT of fandoms i’ve witnessed or been in have a tendency to favor characters other than the main character. especially in anime. the main characters are often written as a blank slate for readers/watchers to project onto, but that makes them not as interesting and so they don’t get the fan attention.
but luffy is so far from that. and he’s ALWAYS been this way. we love him so much. he’s the heart of the story and the heart of the fandom in every single way. and i think that speaks to how well-written he is as a character. he’s fun and charming and complex and interesting and he makes us laugh and cry and cheer and hope and love. he’s able to inspire so much joy in people, both in his world but also in this one. and i think that’s really special. i feel so grateful to have found this story that means so much to me, and i’m so grateful that luffy exists.

One of my favorite things about the ASL Brothers is the fact that Ace was the one brought out the sake and proposed becoming brothers.
Not Luffy or Sabo but Ace.
Ace, who believes he is unlovable, Ace who believes that his blood is dirty, Ace who believes that he didn’t deserve to be born, Ace who thinks that his life is worthless, Ace who believes that his mere existence is a crime.
And yet Ace saw these two boys and approached them without apprehension or fear of rejection even though he was proposing something as irrevocable, something as bonding as brotherhood

There’s a pretty common ASL brothers headcanon that Sabo teaches his brothers things like reading and writing among other things and I do think this is true to a degree. Like of course the bandits taught Ace the basics but you know little Ace and his whole “raaaa don’t tell me what to do. If I stay out of the house I can’t be a bother to you” mindset. And I certainly think Makino and the Mayor TRIED to teach Luffy but he only has a grip on bare basics. So Sabo had to teach more complicated things like grammar, multiplication, division and other things.
And honestly I could see him being a pretty good teacher. He knows how his brothers brains work and how to phrase questions for them so that they would understand. And considering Ace and Sabo had known each other for years by this point I could imagine Ace is use to Sabo being a teacher.
But Sabo as Luffy’s teacher is a little different. Because Sabo watches Luffy struggle with so many things he did when he was little. Phonetic spelling, contractions, fractions even simple things like buttoning up his own shirt are hard for Luffy. And while Ace is quick to call him stupid because it’s easy don’t be a baby. Sabo is patient with him because his own parents never were. He buttons Luffy’s shirts in the winter when he struggles, he sounds out store signs for him and break down maths questions to the point of rocks for Luffy to count. While I doubt Luffy was ever fond of class time, he was almost always met with patience helping him to learn
When Sabo left, Ace would not coddle him the same Sabo did even if he tried to and that Winter after Sabo’s death Luffy learned to button his own shirt and was so proud. He chose to leave Dawn in a button up vest as if to prove to Sabo he was grown enough to survive on his own and he didn’t need to worry.

i love clingy zoro.
zoro being all tired and sleepy and hugging luffy close when one day he tries to wake up earlier than he usually does, luffy complaining at first bc he's hungry but giving up once zoro buries his head on his chest.
zoro having 0% of social battery at a party and looking for luffy around (while he's excitedly talking to someone else) and placing his hands around his captain's hips, putting his chin on luffy's shoulder (luffy proceeds to pat him on the head without stopping his rambling).
zoro kissing luffy's scars and biting around his whole naked body, trying to leave marks. and they actually don't end up having sex that night, they just keep holding each other until they fall asleep. zoro likes knowing luffy is close to him.
zoro being jealous of anyone who might show romantic interest in luffy and stepping in like a guard dog in case they say something inappropriate. like. he never actually does anything and he trusts luffy with his life, he just doesn't trust others.
zoro holding luffy's hand when they have nothing to do.
zoro kissing luffy's cheeks at random moments of the day just because.
zoro always sitting next to luffy.
zoro placing his arm around luffy's shoulder when they sit together.
zoro wearing the straw hat when he's peacefully napping and luffy trusting him enough to leave him alone with it.
zoro calling luffy "my captain" over and over and over again.
zoro telling luffy that he loves him one day, suddenly when they're just resting in sunny's deck. luffy's back against his chest, between his legs, looking up at zoro and asking: "why?"
"why what?"
"why saying it now? zoro rarely does this."
zoro sees luffy's hair move because of the breeze. he's covered in sunlight and he's still brighter than the sun itself. zoro kisses his hand. "just felt like it."
luffy nods. he kisses zoro's knuckles back. "i also feel like telling you."
zoro hums, squeezing his hand. "then do it, captain."
"i love you!" luffy smiles widely, eye to eye. it almost blinds him.
zoro holds him closer. and closer. and closer.
zoro doesn't think he'll ever have enough of luffy.

Out of the (unfortunately) many One Piece scenarios bouncing around in my head one of my favorites is Zoro getting hit with the memory loss beam, and only remembering up until like. immediately after Morgan’s defeat. He’s agreed to join up Luffy and is already feeling his heart swell with loyalty, but is still under the impression that he’s going to join up to a much larger crew, with several other members.
So he just blinks awake and at first there’s none of the confusion and yelling that comes with the memory loss trope, he’s okay, he’s banged up cause of Morgan, he’s on a boat because he just became a pirate, and oh hey Luffy’s right there. This must be his new crew.
Hey, um, is that skeleton playing the violin.
