HEAT 2 intel direct from the source, via a contact who attended Friday night's LA screening + Q&A with Michael Mann himself:

It is 100% happening and is in the earliest stages of preproduction. WB reached out to him after the book came out, not the other way around, and they want it made NOW.

He is seriously considering shooting it on film.

He said next to nothing about the script, which is getting the finishing touches put on it now per WB demand, except that the opening scene is of Chris waking up after the heist.

Some juicy/tragic Neil McCauley backstory tidbits: Mann mentioned how vital his character dossiers are to his story process, and apparently Neil was shuttled through 14 different foster homes as a child. Teasing from his peers over his appearance/ill-fitting hand-me-down clothes humiliated him, and that humiliation turned to rage, and that rage made him useful to various criminal organizations in his 20s because he didn't care what happened to him and could be used as a violent tool at their behest. (Thief vibes, anyone?) By the time he reached his 40s that rage became the object he could develop his newfound discipline against.

It is HAPPENING, man!

PRINTING NOTES: this file is sadly a bitch to print due to the overabundance of double-spread images, which means you need pretty good double sided calibration to have the black background be aligned... or just accept the offset... good luck it took me 4 tries lol.

Second and last typeset for a Heat fic, this one is severely underrated (go read it). Well, I get that poet!Vincent Hanna would confuse most people, but the fic remains amazing. Crack treated seriously is the best... Vincent could be a poet... as a treat...

As for the typeset, I think this time, less will be more. I'll gladly answer an ask if you want to know more but until then... I'll leave it at that.

Michael Mann was so real for his Top Gun references in Heat 2 (the novel). Dare I say a fellow IceMav truther even, since if I remember correctly, said references were made about Chris' love interest(s).

no bc the LAYERS that reference has. fact that mann really made shiherlis (played by val kilmer) made a top gun reference (also played by val kilmer) about someone he’d later marry is so unserious of him. a comedian.

Heat 2 by Michael Mann & Meg Gardiner

Just finished this & it’s like two stories in one. A great prequel to Heat (1995) following Neil & his crew as they are stalked by a new psycho killer, Wardell, with Hanna after Wardell. The other one is a computer tech/theft/espionage/whatever sequel to Heat that follows Chris. Wardell gets back into Chris’s radar, Chris goes after Hanna, etc. All the characters meet up in the end for one massive, confusing shoot out.

The prequel will make a great movie - even the final shoot out with Chris, Hanna & Wardell. The hitech stuff - not so much- at least not in the same movie. It was my least favorite part - mainly because Chris was not my favorite Heat character.

If the movie goes ahead, so far we have Adam Driver as young De Niro & maybe Austin Butler as young Kilmer. Would love to see it!

They were talking about Charlene's driving skills, which, you would think, warrants a comparison to F1 or NASCAR.

But no. She drives like she was trained in Top Gun. Which deals with fighter jets. Not cars.

Michael Mann threw all logic and reason to the bin without remorse just to make a gay reference about how Charlene is basically Maverick in a skirt.

Who Chris will also leave behind after seeing her happy with someone else and he didn't want to get in the way of her happiness despite all his efforts to come back to her because he loved her so much. Now, why does this sound familiar...?

one thing i’d bet my life on is that mann/gardiner did write the book with 80s val in mind - like sometimes as you go through it you pass by some lines and description and think oh YEAH they’re thinking of val alright. almost as if they just googled “val kilmer” and furiously wrote down the first thing that showed up in the screen. here’s my particular favorite (sorry please bear with me i just love sharing my reading highlights):

the chewing gum bit... again with the dangerous reference... like be honest who are we fooling here. they’re smitten. whoever gets casted to play him in the next movie’s got ENORMOUS shoes to fill in and i wish them the best. because i’m sure people are gonna be comparing them to (gestures above) that.
