Again I have impulse-purchased a project rather than a tool.

So one of the local thrift stores had these guys really cheap:

That's a mug press and the hat attachment from a heat press, the sort that somewhat more professional crafters use to put designs in heat-transfer vinyl onto, natch, mugs (and tumblers) and hats. The white bit attached to the cable heats up, and pressure is applied to the vinyl and the material it's supposed to transfer onto. (I also picked up a couple of small round heating plates with the same connectors.)

The trouble of course is that the actual press wasn't there. That's more of a problem for the hat press than for the mug press, which applies its own mechanical pressure, except for the bit that the press also includes the power supply and temperature control.

So the plan is to try to build a controller for these guys. But problem two is that these things have no labeling at all. No manufacturer's plate, no serial numbers, nothing. So I don't have an easy way to look up what the controller is exactly doing here; if I can't find anything else I'll have to reverse engineer things. Fortunately they use a standardly available 4-pin round connector I've seen at the local electronic supply store, and the operation is likely pretty straightforward; presumably you apply some kind of voltage down one of the wires, and another is giving you back a voltage from a temperature sensor. (Some quick probing with a multimeter suggests that pins 3 and 4 are a thermocouple, and that therefore pins 1 and 2 are a heating coil with a resistance of about 175kΩ, but working from that to a working and calibrated electric heater is going to be more difficult.)
