1999 Jerusalem - Number 20 - Marlain Angelidou - "Tha'nai Erotas"

Tha'nai Erotas (It Will Be Love) is one of those songs. A perfectly good dance track that rushes along with enthusiasm as Marlain sings about moments of lust and desire, just knowing that eventually he'll be hers. There's some gentle choreography with her backing singers. In any other year this would have done adequately but there are three problems.

First there's the vocal wobbles as Marlain goes for it. Reaching for the soprano she sounds a bit unstable and notably off-pitch. As do her backing singers towards then end of the song. Maybe that choreography wasn't so gentle. Despite this, the song is still a good one, better than many others in competition this year.

Second there's the lack of Greece. Greece's relegation for 1999 means no twelve points to Cyprus. And they're a small country without too much in the way of diaspora or shared culture outside of Greece. The televote is going to be much harder to impress.

Lastly there's the running order. 14th doesn't appear so bad, however before her is Iceland who finished 2nd with another upbeat banger. Afterwards there's Sweden who finished 1st with yet another upbeat song, this one a full-on schlager fest. Sandwiched between those two, Marlain and Cyprus didn't stand a chance. She only got two points and finished second last.

The song is much better than that and I'm happy to include it in my top 26. Marlain had already tried for Eurovision once before, finishing second the the Cypriot national final in 1998 alongside Eurovision machine Alex Panayi. She also tried again in 2008 and 2009 without success.

Marlain filled the gap between these final appearance by becoming a member of Hi-5 as well as singing on London's musical theatre stages. Hi-5 were the band formed from on the Greek version of the Popstars reality show. They had great success in Greece, releasing five number one singles in the Greek charts in a single year. Here she is singing with Hi-5 on their biggest single Ξέρω τι Ζητάω (I Know What I'm Asking For) from 2003.
