In one of the MELE playthroughs I'm following, the player is about to reach the "About Horizon" email and it has reminded me of something that really surprised me when I started to interact with fandom content.

It had never crossed my mind that that email could be seen as something bad. I mean, I expected it from the Kaidan haters who love to twist everything he says, but I have even seen it from some shenkos.

The guy starts by saying he's sorry about what he said in Horizon and then tries to explain what was going on in his mind. Yeah, he mentions seeing someone else, but he's just being honest and straight forward (as he has always been), two things that are essential in any relationship, romantic or not, specially if there's been a fight and you are trying to mend things. Plus, it's been two years for him and he never says he has found love. In fact, everything sounds pretty reluctant and casual. And even so, he then goes to say that everything turned upside down when he saw Shepard and is obvious that he wants to talk with her again and try to patch up their relationship.

Overall, I have always thought that it is an email from a very confused yet madly in love man.

Side note: I have the Spanish version and they messed up a bit with the translation and instead of Kaidan going out on a date with some doctor, they made it sound as if he was having a drinking problem and went to see a doctor for help 😅

Because of the exploding human presence in the interstellar scene, the galactic entertainment industry is all scrambling to capture their market by appealing to Earth cultures as much as possible.

In the earlier years of human expansion, this led to some hastily produced, and even more hastily researched, entertainment vids that are, by 2183, considered...quaint, if a little problematic. The holiday specials are considered classics in the same sense that the Star Wars Holiday Special is.

There's one in particular that stands out, one that is only circulated as bootleg copies as the studio that produced it folded shortly thereafter and only made a few official copies.

The whole movie is an embodiment of “a little confused, but got the spirit.” There’s Santer Klaws, played by a gruff, deep-voiced krogan in an enormously fluffy fake white beard. An asari scientist with an on-and-off relationship with Klaws who has to team up with him to save Christmas for all thhe human children. A grumpy salarian side-kick who has to be taught the meaning of Christmas. A human child who tags along for the adventure. Perry the Pyjack makes a special cameo appearance at one point.

It’s a mess, but so gleefully terrible that it ended up becoming endearing. Humans in 2183 have drinking games to play while watching it, quote the lines with the vid, and even have themed costume parties. Like a future Christmas themed Rocky Horror.

Reading about a cool post about romancing a more diverse set of aliens in the next Mass Effect (yes please), I'm realizing I'd really want more focus on different ways to get close to NPCs that don't necesserily involve smooches or sex scenes. I know that would explode the budget, but... I don't know, I see room for a relationship system that does not 100% rely on the "is romanced" boolean, where cutscenes/missions activate or do not activate depending on the specifics of the relationship you're developing with a given character (with a tag system for example).

That way, there is a conversation where you pour your heart out with a given character that is available whether or not you romance them, but that you *could* miss out on if you decide to romance them but put the focus on the more competitive aspect of your relationship instead of the vulnerability. A sort of web of possible situations that would tailor more closely to who you are as a PC and how you want to engage with the world without betraying the NPC.

That would imply uhhhh budget, and a very strong relationship design system (let me design it bioware wait actually don't I could not handle working on mass effect emotionally I think). But. Would be cool, and would allow me to RP aroace characters without feeling completely alone and adrift in the uncaring void of space. :3
