May I have sun-drown-patrol Ashfur facts?!?
And what would Bramble be going through with his sis missing, and Cloud and Fern freaking out with their little brother gone? (Honestly would not want to be in Thunderclan the morning those two realize Ashfur is gone, tbh. Like Cloud realizes first then barges into the nursery and asks Fern if she's seen him?)
Ok, here goes my pitch for Sundrown Patrol Ashfur AU:
The Lineup!
As I said yesterday, a fully developed 6-character dynamic with its 15 unique two-way relationships is a tall order for most writers. However, with Ashfur here to go through a very specific arc about taking life at his own pace there is more thematic reason to have both Squirrelpaw the feisty young child that follows Ashfur wherever he goes and Crowpaw the almost warrior who by virtue of his rank is still not afforded quite the status of peer by the others. Stormfur may have to be the one to go instead, but he's hard to write out without also taking out his story. But really would it be that big of a loss to shed the baggage of the Tribe?
However, a point in favor of keeping him around: I want Feathertail to be a meddie. Stormfur's protectiveness of her may be more understandable in this situation, as she would presumably be worse equipped for combat and very important for the Clan to keep safe.
It is honestly a glaring omission that StarClan didn't send a doctor alongside them and the fact Leafpaw and Squirrelpaw just so happened to have twin telepathy for the one incident where they needed medical attention is such a transparent author convenience. Plus, I dig the idea that this similarity between Leafpaw and Feathertail could've fueled the later fiasco with Crowfeather.
I'll have to think more on it. Regardless Tawnypelt still goes in ShadowClan's name.
The dynamic!
I see Ashfur having trouble opening up to Feathertail and Tawnypelt but also desperately wanting to because his only other option is hanging out with the apprentices. I see him being intimidated by them, their reputation and rank preceding them. The struggle here will be in realizing they're regular cats like him, dealing with matters of young adulthood like love or learning to be autonomous or feeling aimless much like him. But it will also be a bond rooted in how the times they grew up in affected them in a similar way, a way the cats coming of age now like Crowpaw or Squirrelpaw struggle to wrap their head around with emotionally.
With Squirrelpaw and Crowpaw I see him growing from annoyance and a desire to distance himself from them to relating strongly to the awkwardness and liminality of their experience. It is something he hasn't quite left behind himself and which much as he wants to shed by force he has to come to accept and dwell on in order to move beyond it. While I don't see him becoming quite as close friends with this pair as with the previous, it is not for it less important to his self-actualization.
Back home!
I think you may be misremembering or mixing up AUs by calling Ashfur Cloudtail and Ferncloud's little brother. He's Ferncloud's twin and Cloudtail isn't that much older than them that I'd count him not part of the litter at least emotionally. I don't think the freakout would be that severe, at least until Ash has been gone for a good part of the day.
But anyway, the Brambleclaw of it all! I think the best route to take him if he's being left behind is to build him up for the back half of the arc. You could have him with an apprentice and have him be an ally of Firestar in this tumultuous time to better justify his rise to deputyship. You could use his worry over Tawnypelt's disappearance to build up his turn towards Hawkfrost and his other Tigerkin family. You could even show in the ways in which he acts as he grows in importance within this Clan the early signs of who he'd become.
My implementation of this idea would have Bramble getting his own Side B kind of super edition à la Hawkwing's Journey while the first three volumes of the arc focus on the journey and migration squarely from the Sundrown Patrol's perspective. This way we free up page count in the main arc and really give Bramble's side the space to breathe and to really develop him as a solid antagonist.

Rain Draws Squirrelflight, Leafpool & Bramblestar a Few Times
Since these three won my poll on which protagonists I should draw, here they are!
They don't get as much art per character as Ashfur did, because that was one character and this is three. Trust me, this was faster and more do-able
So anyways, first up is the Squirrel herself!
Tumblr media
I draw Squirrelpaw generally softer & bouncier looking than I draw Squirrelflight, because at this point in time she's just a kid. She has not yet witnessed the Horrors(tm)
Even when I was reading The New Prophecy for the first time as a kid, I always imagined Squirrelpaw/Squirrelflight as having little round ears. Maybe it was just the "Squirrel" prefix, but that trait has always stuck with me and I've always drawn her with small ears.
This isn't a trait unique to Squirrelflight with my designs though! In her family alone, Cloudtail, Alderheart, Lionblaze and Nutmeg also have small, rounded ears (Princess might also have them, but I haven't decided yet. I also haven't decided if any of Cloudtail or Lionblaze's kits have the rounded ears, but at least one probably does)
I wish that she had kept her telepathy thing with her sister, I honestly thought it was interesting. It's a shame that the Erins quickly ran out of uses for it and decided to pretend it never existed. This may or may not be why in my rewrite of Warriors that exists in my head (like many others in this fandom), the telepathy thing didn't stop existing as soon as it wasn't super useful the plot anymore.
Admittedly, she's always been my favorite of the cats who journeyed to the sun-drown place (though tbf, most of them didn't really get any proper development, and the other one was Brambleclaw. I do have a soft spot for Stormfur and Tawnypelt, though).
Also I... forgot to color Squirrelkit's mouth. Whoops
Tumblr media
The lady with a somehow worse taste in men than her sister, Squirrelflight!
Please Squirrelflight, you could've done so much better than Bramblestar. You deserve so much better than Bramblestar.
That aside, Squirrelflight has been one of my favorites for a long time. I just think she's a fun and interesting character
I think I said basically all of the things I was going to say when I was talking about Squirrelpaw, tbh. Also, much like a lot of the fandom for some reason, I don't really remember much of what happened during OotS? I don't think Squilf was particularly relevant during that arc, but it's possible she was and I just genuinely do not remember.
Why is Omen of the Stars basically just a void in everyone's memory. What's going on there.
Anyways, those aren't the final designs for Lionkit, Hollykit & Jaykit in that little doodle. Those are just kind of rough concept designs for them, and when I eventually draw them they'll probably look different. Also this is tortie Hollyleaf propaganda
If Lionblaze can be golden (though I typically draw him as cream) when both of his parents are functionally black (brown = black when it comes to cats. Also Leafpool shouldn't be a brown tabby anyways, because her dad is red and her mom is cream, which is a dilute version of red. I should stop talking now, before I get too deep into rambling about cat genetics), then Hollyleaf can be a tortie. (Jayfeather's fine btw. Gray is a dilute version of black, and both of his parents carry dilute. Crowfeather from Ashfoot & Leafpool from Sandstorm)
Okay, I'll finally shut up about cat genetics now
Tumblr media
If Squirrelstar doesn't happen, I will eat my hat. I will eat several hats.
I actually don't even know how old Squirrelflight is currently in the books. It doesn't help that the Erins are weird with ages and don't seem to know how cats work.
For my purposes, I choose to believe that the Clans have been at the lake for at least a decade, making Squilf at least 10 1/2 - 11 years old, depending on how old she was when the Clans left the forest territories. And putting her around that age would, in fact, make her a senior (for a house cat, at least. Real feral cats don't typically live that long, but tbf the clans have medicine and stuff, so their life expectancy might be longer than regular feral cats. But cats are considered seniors once they hit 10 years old)
Also all things considered, she's probably been stressed as hell for a while and experiencing the Horrors(tm). So she gets some gray on her muzzle from a combination of age and stress.
Honestly she deserves to go on a nice, relaxing vacation where she doesn't have to deal with the Erin's less than good writing choices and shitty treatment of female characters.
Anyways Squirrelstar's leader mark is her nose spot becoming star shaped, because I love it when leaders are depicted with some sort of star shaped marking. I eat it up every time.
I'll talk more about leader marks and how I do them at a later time, though.
Tumblr media
Leafpaw! My sweet baby Leafpaw!
My version of Leafpool is big and very fluffy, and you can't stop me from drawing her that way
Right off the bat, you'll probably notice that her design has changed a bit from the original concept design that I posted, as she's now a tortie instead of a regular brown tabby. Admittedly, a big part of why she's a tortie now is that I just love torties & calicos haha
If anything, her name makes even more sense now, because the combination of brown and orange makes her look more like leaves during fall! :)
Why's Leaf a tortie but Squirrel isn't? Maybe Squirrelflight is a secret tortie, or maybe she's trans, who knows? (The actual answer is that I had already finished all the Squilf art when I randomly decided to have Leaf be a tortie, but I didn't want to go back and change Squilf's design because I love it)
Tumblr media
I hope it's obvious that I love Leafpool a whole lot
Once again, Holly, Lion & Jay's designs in this are not their final designs and when I eventually get around to actually drawing them, they'll definitely have at least a few design changes.
Also it's really hard to draw tiny little newborn kittens on a small scale like this.
Anyways I've never actually read Leafpool's Wish, so I don't know if it proves or disproves what I'm about to say, but I think that with how much Leafpool loved her kits, I believe that she would've raised them herself if she had the ability to.
I also personally believe that if Squirrelflight hadn't decided to take in the kits, or if Leafpool had decided that she wanted to raise her kits instead of her sister doing it, Thunderclan wouldn't have done shit about it. I mean, she definitely wouldn't be as trusted as she was before, but I don't think she'd lose her job (at least at first) or be exiled. She was their only medicine cat, they literally couldn't do shit about it. Additionally, she's Firestar's daughter and also related to Sandstorm and Squirrelflight, who are both individually forces to be reckoned with.
She'd probably have to train an apprentice as soon as possible and then have to step down from her role as medicine cat, but I definitely don't think she'd be exiled or anything.
Tumblr media
Leafpool but she sparkles
For anyone who didn't see my Ashfur post, some of the rules I have for Starclan designs is that Starclan cats are lighter in color and have sharper & more star shaped markings compared to when they were alive. They also have their appearances change over time in a way connected to their names, which is why Leafpool is starting to grow leaves out of her neck fluff.
Additionally, Starclan cats will typically have a sharper shape, to go with their sharper markings. You'll notice that while she has the sharper markings, Leafpool's fur is still soft and rounded.
I feel like Leafpool's whole thing with her trial would affect her Starclan appearance, but that's not really something that results from a trial, so her not becoming sharper in shape is the exception rather than the rule.
I didn't design a Dark Forest Leafpool, but I imagine that the changes she'd get there (because my DF cats have their appearances change based on their crimes) would be that she would still grow leaves out of her body, but she'd also grow feathers and would have particularly long and sharp claws that she wouldn't be able to sheath. Each of these things is representative of the "crime" that she was sentenced for (even though Spottedleaf, a Starclan cat, literally encouraged her to do that)
The leaves would specifically be holly leaves (representing, well... Hollyleaf), the feathers would be a mix of jay and crow (representing Jayfeather & Crowfeather) and the claws would represent Lionblaze (though for this one I went with something meant to represent his power instead of his name. With Leafpool being a medicine cat, I think it fits)
If Leafpool doesn't give Squirrelstar a life we riot
Tumblr media
The bramble man
Honestly even as a kid Brambleclaw wasn't exactly my favorite character. I wasn't really old enough to really process how he sucks, honestly I just kind of remember thinking that he was boring. Maybe that's just the fact that I've always liked Squirrelflight & Leafpool way more than him, but I just didn't really care for his POV chapters during The New Prophecy
I did love the Hawkfrost scene, though. Because I wasn't on any warrior cats forums or anything as a kid, I didn't get spoiled about stuff like Hawkfrost's death or the Fire Scene (along with many other important scenes), so I think those scenes hit way harder for me.
When I was a kid reading Po3 for the first time, I genuinely didn't even suspect that Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw weren't Hollyleaf, Lionblaze & Jayfeather's biological parents. So you can probably imagine how shocked little elementary school me was
But anyways, yeah. While I didn't hate Brambleclaw as a kid, I just didn't really care about him.
On another note, my Brambleclaw/star design is pretty similar in shape to my Lionheart design (just with extra toes and not as big of a mane). Since Lionheart was Goldenflower's brother, I thought it would be interesting if while everyone else just saw Tigerclawstar in Bramble's appearance, Goldenflower didn't.
My Tawnypelt design has a more similar shape to Tigerclawstar, though.
Tumblr media
Bramblestar!
Leader marks are usually an already existing marking that becomes star shaped (like how I made Squirrelstar's nose spot star shaped), but sometimes a new marking entirely will appear as the leader mark.
While I easily could've made one of the spots on the backs of his ears into a star shaped for his leader mark, I have plans relating to Bramblefake/The Imposter and Bramblestar's mark.
You'll see said plans in a moment, but what I will mention about it is that my Ashfur design has a broken heart shaped marking on his chest.
On an unrelated note, Bramblestar should have someone else name warriors for him because great Starclan is he bad at names.
Tumblr media
There's totally nothing wrong with Bramblestar, what possibly could've made you think that
Anyways, a combination of the whole being possessed thing & Ashfur's broken heart marking have caused Bramblestar's leader mark to "break". It actually doesn't get fixed after he's no longer possessed, his leader mark stays that way.
The Imposter's fur is darker and droopier than regular Brambkestar. I don't have a real reason for the darker color (other than that it looks cool), but the fur is Ashfur's doing.
Another thing that is Ashfur's doing is the blue pupils. Bramblestar is supposed to have red pupils (due to him training in the Dark Forest in TNP), but being possessed kind of overrides that and so The Imposter's pupils are blue. They do turn red again after Bramblestar is no longer possessed, though.
Honestly, I still kind of wish that the theory that Bramblestar had rabies was canon. The possession was interesting, but I don't think rabies has even been mentioned in the series. Which is a bit surprising considering that it's basically a soap opera with cats, but then again the Erins sure do love taking the opportunity to ignore possible interesting new plots. Why do anything interesting when we could instead have a billion more badly written romances
But I will admit, it was interesting to have Ashfur come back to be awful again. I'm still mad that he got let into Starclan after trying to kill at least 4 people because he "loved too much" and that gave him more of an opportunity to pull this shit. They absolutely butchered Yellowfang after she died. Not really even recognizable as the same character as her living self.
I'm not doing more art for this post. I'm tired and I'm going to go get some sleep. Tomorrow I will get back to work on hypokit requests, but for now it is time to put away my art supplies and lay in bed.

Also I'm just going to say it:
Nightheart should've been mentored by Bramblestar and THAT is THAT.
If anyone in the ThunderClan knows what it's like to be trapped in your kin's shadow, it's Bramblestar. The exploration of Nightheart as a character can go so much deeper and be so much better if he starts getting closer with Bramblestar. Honestly I wouldn't even mind an arc where he leaves ThunderClan entirely and seeks our Tawnypelt for the same experience.
And I also think it's kinda stupid that we never actually see Bramblestar mentor literally anyone??? Like yeah he was told he could mentor Berrynose but we never actually SAW any of it. Did the authors just forget that the leader mentoring someone is an option?
Plus, I always read the books as Firestar thinking of Bramblestar as a surrogate son. Sure, at first their relationship was rocky because of OG Tigerstar, but you cannot deny that Firestar grew to love Bramblestar, he would never have made him deputy if he didn't. So it would make sense that Firestar would ask Bramblestar to teach and guide his great-grandson when he sees Nightheart struggling under the burden of his family's legacy.
Firestar and his family have always been linked to themes of needing to prove themselves, almost every member of the family needed to do it, it's a rite of passage for his line. Nightheart struggling isn't a new thing; it's just framed in a different way because members of Firestar's family have never been explicitly held to his specific standards. Even Lionblaze wasn't.
We were robbed of fantastic character development of both Nightheart and Bramblestar by forgetting (or ignoring) the fact that Bramblestar has suffered under the scrutiny of his whole Clan and would absolutely be able to give Nightheart the advice he needs to hear.
I hope Bramblestar deciding to change his name is the beginning of a relationship like this because I think it'll be wonderful.

Brambleclaw - This boy was fun to design! I wanted him to have VERY similar features to Tigerstar (as he is always compared to looking strinkingly similar to his father) but with some softer and more saturated colors (like his mother). His eyes are a bit more golden in honor of his mother. Honestly, I really WISH his Warrior name had been Brambleflower or something much more soft? Brambleberry, Brambleheart- something other than BrambleCLAW like TigerCLAW. Yes, way to remind the child of his FATHER. Anyways, I loved his character until Hawkfrost got involved- and then in my opinion, he just went downhill from there Squirrelflight - I LOVE HER! A good girl! Didn't deserve ANY of the shit she's been put through, at all. Small ears like her mother! A bit more of a yellow-ginger when in direct comparison to my Firestar design. I just love her. I love how she was such a good mother to the three. I haven't read any books since the end of Omen of the Stars so I don't really know how she is now, other than she was dragged into cat hell by the imposter. I wish she would have been made leader. OH! I also read Squirrelflight's Hope, and although I didn't know a lot of the characters, how DARE StarClan put her on trial? She was RIGHT that entire book and Bramblestar was just a jerk the entire time. She deserves so much better. Tawnypelt - Ear tufts just seem to run in this family and I love it! I headcannon her to be a BIG GORL. BIG LADY. I really tried to pull from Tigerstar and Goldenflower's designs, having her have patches of gold and brown, like a perfect blend of her parents. I just feel so heartbroken that she left ThunderClan to go to ShadowClan where she thought she'd be accepted more- and it looks like she is happy there  She found a seemingly wonderful mate and had beautiful kits. She is good. I want TAWNYSTAR! Crowfeather - Angry boy, I love him. I could go into a big discourse on his character but I just, he's well-written, I believe. He's flawed and I can get behind that- his choices were never the best and he was kind of a shit dad, but I liked that in writing? It was a breath of fresh air compared to how some characters are written and I can get behind that. I think he really redeemed himself quite a bit in Crowfeather's Trial and really like how he and Nightcloud ended it as friends.   Feathertail - Some aspects get gets from her father, but I would say a majority of looks come from her mother. I really love how gentle and patient she was with Crowpaw and how he fell in love with her. I am not sure if I headcannon that she loves him back romantically or more-so platonically, like a little sibling or something that she felt she must care for and protect, kind of how she felt towards Mothwing and Hawkfrost as kits. She was also incredibly brave when facing down the sharptooth and a true warrior to the end. Stormfur - Same head stripe as Graystripe, as well as mane! He almost looks a bit too blue in this picture, but I was aiming for one of those really dark stormclouds! Blue-ish like his mother, dark-ish like his father! I LOVE STORMFUR AND BROOK. Stormfur and Squirrelflight would have been ok, but BROOK. YES. I loved how he chose to stay with her in the mountains and is happy living there. I also kind of headcannon him to be bi- totally having a crush on Brambleclaw.

(Reedwhisker anon)
If the Erin's do confirm that Reedwhisker was in the same litter as Prim, Pike, and Perch, the only way I can figure out why he went through two years of apprenticeship hell is, well, a Serious Head Injury. Maybe Tigerstar sets up something to make himself look better. Reedpaw is only 1/4 Thunderclan, so maybe a 'show,' to make it look like he's going to have Reedpaw killed, and he talks to Darkstripe about it. Darkstripe accidentally messess up, maybe or maybe Reed hits his head on a rock during the whole thing before Tigerstar can do his whole generosity thing and spare him, and well. Everyone is confused when Reed doesn't get up, and then maybe he has a seizure or something? Idk Canon isn't my mess to fix.
Misty AU, I can actually see Mistyfoot just...physically pulling Reed close to her after Tigerstar is killed, and that's when Shadowclan realizes that oh. Reed is related to her. It's kinda even funnier if he looks like her, but they just didn't place it.
Leopard AU...if Misty is with Thunderclan's battle party when Bloodclan is introduced and Tigerstar dies, and Reed is with Riverclan's cats after Shadowclan flees, I can also see her just...walking over and lifting him up by his scruff and walking back to Thunderclan's party and Firestar is like...wat.
Stormpaw: "That's Reedpaw! He's Mistyfoot's kit." *he tells the fire pelted leader, before butting his head against Reedpaw as Stonefur attempts to get Misty to set Reed down, but it's not going to well.
As for the whole Tigerheart name thing....this boy personally voices his opinion to Twany next time he sees her too. He tells her directly to her face that she is a shitty queen, and a hypocrite.
But for The Kin and Darktail thing...in Canon, if he's from a second litter, I feel horrible for Misty. She's lost her first litter, Stone, Storm, and Feather, and now her son...is prisoner to Darktail. In Misty AU and Leopard AU...I cannot not see her going absolutely feral. Feather trying to keep her calm but Feather's regressed a bit, terror for her brother shining in her eyes, and Storm's pacing back and forth in Thunderclan camp, tail lashing. Stone probably wants to pull a rescue (if he's still alive) but Misty can't put Thunderclan or Riverclan in danger anymore then it is. Hawk, Moth, and Frog all uneasy and unhappy and twitching. They just don't know what to do. Maybe those three with Alder, Violet, and Twig stage a rescue and get everyone out. Or he's stuck as a prisoner to the Kin until Darktail is dead. Either way, big family cuddle pile every night for a moon or two. Maybe longer with Misty and Feather.
(Tried breaking this up with spaces, hope it works.)
yes thank you...greatly appreciated.
ooo that head injury idea is good! i like that a lot. yes. very good. i'm unlikely, like. i don't really care about reedwhisker as a character so shrug, i'll probably never do anything with him and the weird age stuff, but i like this as a solution! yes. very good.
dfjkldas yeah ohmygod. reedwhisker and mistyfoot walking to a gathering together and russetfur is like "oh my god we're all fucking idiots."
heh yeah. she probably would be! her and stormpaw. and she sees reedpaw and is like. "THAT'S MY FUCKING SON" and is very happy to see him. thunderclan comes home with more cats than it left with. but everyone is so happy to see him again. he's so happy to see everyone again. good reunion times.
mistyfoot is Not letting reedpaw out of her sight for like. at least three days. probably longer but at least three days. reedpaw is fine with that. he's very excited to see everyone. stonefur. god. yes. good family reunion times.
and yes -- god. i love. okay one of like. my fav things about tawnypelt (in the misty au) is this disbalance in their experiences. because -- to be clear, tawnypelt is also traumatized by tigerclan. but her experience is so fundamentally different like -- hm. it's not even.
excerpt time yes. some stuff from tnp i'm many whiles away from publishing.
so feathertail like actually doesn't remember very much of tigerclan. not in any specifics. it's all a very hazy mess with some key moments.
Feathertail wants to make her name them all, but Feathertail doesn't think she knows what they are. "What are you apologizing for, Tawnypelt?"
to face the burning heat
but tawnypelt does
"I—" remember how you screamed, Tawnypelt's mind supplies. I remember when I didn't understand. I remember everything, Feathertail. "I'm sure. I'm sorry for that, and every other time."
trying not to face what i've done
and yet. it's a hugely formative thing for feathertail, in a way that like -- tawnypelt doesn't get.
"No, we can't, can we?" Feathertail says. Her posture has changed, her ears folded back, and Tawnypelt shrinks.
trying not to face what i've done
like tawnypelt recognizes what's going on but she doesn't realize how deep she's cut
Brambleclaw is watching them. He has stepped back, Feathertail realizes, there is nothing between Tawnypelt and herself. She could — she could leap. Feathertail is frozen, her hindlegs refuse to move, she can't — she can't do this.
to face the burning heat
and yeah. so what's my point?
well, it'd be the same thing here, wouldn't it? because again, tawnypelt is one of tigerstar's victims. everything else aside, he's not like. he's emotionally abusive to her. he ties her self worth to his approval and he's not afraid to twist that thread to keep her under his thumb.
"Stop fucking whining," he snaps and she flinches.
let me write my own line
so to her like -- yeah. her whole decision kind of makes sense. because tawnypelt is -- not intentionally, but she's a very selfish character.
"What are you apologizing for, Tawnypelt?" Feathertail says this like it is a question, like they are not both staring at the result of everything Tawnypelt has done. Brambleclaw is watching in silence. I'm sorry, brother, she thinks. "Say it," Feathertail spits. "Tell me what you're sorry for."
trying not to face what i've done
like she's --- she's worried about her perception, here. it's complicated because she does apologize, she does let it come out, but she's also very concerned with her own image.
and that happens again when she names her son tigerkit. because she's thinking -- i am reclaiming this. but to everyone else, she's naming her son after a monster, she's openly invoking that comparison, like. i already think tigerheart has a very very complex to negative relationship with his name.
(especially once he becomes leader.)
so with that in mind -- yeah. first of all rip tigerheart for the comparison but second.
reedwhisker is Not having it. 0%. what the Fuck are you Doing tawnypelt.
i think -- honestly, i think mistyfoot would be angry with him for going as far as calling her a bad queen. right like, i don't -- i think that would be a step too far for her. but everyone in riverclan and shadowclan and all of the clans are supportive of reedwhisker.
(i saw a think about tigerkit being golden and goldenkit and -- my heart. feels things. goldenheart. i love it. hm. i literally have it saved in my au ideas folder. "oots except tigerheart is named goldenheart. that's it. that's the only difference.")
and yeah oh man the fucking kin like man. god -- i'm actually working on something about that? about how like -- it triggers mistystar's ptsd? anyway.
but yeah -- for Minimal Angst (and canon coherence) i think reedwhisker would be the only kit in her litter but i imagine like -- mistystar is very protective of him because of course she is, very reasonable. and so for him to be taken from her is just. unthinkably cruel.
and yeahh -- she would be really, really, really angry. this is what...like 8 years later? and still -- oh first of all.
just. the angst of -- because stormheart and stonefur were not there for the worst of it. and even though they saw the aftermath, you know, okay actually.
shadepelt would be probably like. very upset about the bodies. because the whole reason she almost died was that she tried to bury bodies. and stormheart like -- he hasn't really seen shadepelt like this. not really, not in a long time. hnng. good.
but feathertail is -- yeah. she's Retreating to Safety. even after this much time she's still very close with mistystar, and i don't think -- after reedwhisker is held hostage, i don't think she'd want to separate from her.
and everyone is so angry and frustrated and done because -- this isn't fair.
i think hawk, moth, and frog would definitely attempt a rescue. (i mean if i wanted maximum angst one of them would be held hostage as well. just for the record.) and --
oh i've talked about like. the angst of seeing your parent like. hurt. and this hurts them Again.
like it's hard, right? and even if they're adults feathertail is still their mom but she's scared and ohh. good stuff.
but yeah, rescue attempts. oh. maybe in the rescue attempt one of them gets captured. maybe like. hm. idk. maybe frog and alder. idk. but they get themselves captured and -- because alder is kind of like a dad to violet and twig and now there's So Much damn family angst.
but when it's all over -- mistystar is going to have a Lot of cats in her den for a while.
i'm not sure if/when mistyfoot and feathertail stop sleeping together? like maybe at some point but yeah. feathertail is like. "hi mistystar this is Our Den now."
(mistystar is fine with this. she's somewhat less fine with the fact that stonefur, stormheart, and reedwhisker are following suit because her den is like. big enough for maybe three or four cats to sleep comfortably, and hawkfrost, mothwing, and frogheart keep sneaking in, and she needs to be able to get out of her own den she is the leader oh my god, but only a little because really she just loves them a lot.)

warriors rewrite
so like i’ve said a million times i’m bitter about the writing and plot in warriors.
i might reread the new prophecy to refresh my memory but here’s the gist of my idea from what i remember of the books lol
so the big thing for the new prophecy is gonna be a code rewrite and the clans changing to permanent allies. if you’ve seen moonkiti’s video on the clans joining it would be something along those lines.
the new prophecy would be the perfect place to start. for the rewrite Brambleclaw, Tawnypelt, Feathertail, and Stormfur act as older siblings to squilf and Crowpaw. Feathertail is no longer Crow’s mate/crush. instead she’s a big support to him. she’d honestly act much the same as she did in the book ngl.
Storm and feather as half clan cats already find the clan system to be a bit oppressive. i mean hell, they were almost killed for being half clan. Bramble and Tawny are similar in that regard as they’re close but separated.
for this rewrite Crow and squirrel end up together. that along with the groups mutual friendship is where the frustration with the clans begins. the group itself is much closer here, slowly forgetting borders n stuff.
feather’s death has an even greater impact. squirrel and Crow get together after that since they become big supports to each other. Storm is especially affected. he sees cats from other clans grieving for his clanmate too. it really strikes him that they’re honestly no different from each other.
on the journey home he starts to talk to them about the clans becoming sort of permanent allies. after all that’s happened, they’re not that opposed to the idea. Storm is the big driving force for a lot of this. he feels it’s what his sister wanted. Crow, who was also very close to her, is the same. Crow gets a character arc a bit bigger than the others. he really has to unlearn clan prejudice.
the lake journey only emphasizes the need to join together. this time other cats start to see that as well.once they get there, Squirrel and Crow have secret meetings almost off the bat. in fact, the original journey cats meet up as well. (separate to the squirrel and crow one.)ash still asks Squilf out and she still turns him down. she also still has a falling out with Bramble about Hawkfrost. she knows a little about how shitty he is from Leafpool.
Bramble ends up telling Hawk about the gangs’ ideas of the clans joining. i mean hell, he’s got three siblings in other clans. Bramble actually befriends Mothwing in this rewrite. i always found it ridiculous he only acknowledges his brother and not his sister.
Moth loves the idea. as a med cat the clan rules are a bit different so she was already more open to the idea.Hawk uses the multiclan idea as part of trying to convince Bramble to kill firestar. in the rewrite tho, Moth confesses about how shitty Hawk’s been to her and storm. Bramble pretty much cuts contact with him and Tigerstar. the firestar trap scene does still happen tho.
in this rewrite squilf ends up pregnant and asks Bramble to pretend to be the father. they’ve patched up their relationship by now and he agrees. squilf tells leaf about it first. Leaf knew about them being mates and had been jealous.
not of squirrel, but their relationship. i mean her main friend in the new prophecy started to drift away cause of a relationship too. she agrees to help Squirrel however she can tho. she connects more with Moth cause of her jealousy.
a lot comes together with the original journey cats, Leafpool, Mothwing and Graystripe. the big climax is them at a gathering trying to convince the clans to join together. Squilf reveals she’s having Crow’s kits there. Bramble and his siblings stand united. (hawk’s been killed by now)
Storm points out how they all had to work together with the badgers and that the clans do better working together then apart.
Leafpool makes a big selling point. the clans are together in starclan, why can’t they do that now? how many half clan relationships reconnect there? starclan can’t find it THAT bad if it’s allowed there.
the cats mostly argue that the clans should stay individual, but together. allowing for halfclan relationships and working together through hardships.
the clans agree at the end of the arc.
Po3 is mostly buildup to the dark forest. the three are working through their odd relationship with their father. breezepaw doesn’t exist. the tensions with the clans joining are also high. cats like Dustpelt or Spiderleg don’t like it at all.
everyone’s a little snippy with each other. gatherings are still a thing to help maintain relationships. there’s always a lot of bickering here though.
Jay still becomes a warrior. he, Crow, and Squirrel talk to firestar about him being treated better and how they can help him out. Holly still becomes a med cat. she’s not great with herbs and she’s better at fighting but she wants to be higher in the clan. she says leaders are seen as highest but she belives med cats are more important.
Leaf loves her to bits.
the fire scene also happens. Squirrel pushes Ash into the fire. she ends up permanently disabled cause of it tho. (in the book Ash had to help her move the log as she was still recovering from a major injury. i wanted to use that for the rewrite. pushing him in messes up the injury and messes her up real bad.)
omen of the stars is mostly more darkforest buildup. the dark forest cats try to isolate the clans again and turn them against each other. a lot pf the plot is about the three trying to keep everyone together. hollyleaf is the third cat in this au.
might have Dove as the mysterious 4th cat or somthing. maybe i’ll have her move to shadowclan and Ivy feels bitter and like she was abandoned.
anyways, the clans really get tested in the battle. it’s much longer in the rewrite. i felt like the battle was too short in the original. Holly is still killed. Ivy kills Hawk.
Storm, Bramble, Leaf, Moth, Cinderheart, Mothwing, Willowshine, Tawny, Crow, Squirrel, Fire, Ivy, Jay, Lion, they all mourn her. cats actually have and retain friendships in this rewrite. for instance, Lion and Heather get to stay friends.
everyone expects them to become mates but they never do. they’re just good friends.
anyways, i always thought Bramble was a dick in the books. maybe not abusive per se but he was just a jerk. he’s stern but kind in the rewrite. he had so much of his character be about not becoming Tigerstar n stuff. idk i feel like he should have stayed consistently nice. squirrel still becomes his deputy, not as a sign of forgiveness like the books, he just genuinly trusts her.
also we get Tawnystar cause that’s what she deserves.
that’s what i’ve go so far! sorry if u had to read all that lmao! this is just somthing i’ve had in the back of my head, feel free to suggest stuff for it as it’s not too complete.

Laurel: If you could write the books, what changes would you make?
okay it’d be a Lot of them.... i haven’t particularly thought it through too much but i think anyone could right the books better than the erins
okay first series additions.... make princess have a larger role. she does nothing but have babies and is there sometimes & i like her so she is a cool supportive big sister now. joining the clans would be lame but she could be the Voice of Reason w all the stupid clan rules and give her brother advice
umm make redtail b alive longer so his death isn’t just a random plot device. introduce rusty to the clans and have everything be peachy for even like a day before his murder where he gets a taste of the danger that all of them r constantly in. more impact
this is going to sound crazy but hear me out okay. i want sandstorm to take the role of graystripe and be fire’s pal from day one. she could still have the ‘lol ur weak lmao <3’ thing but whitestorm is a good mentor and she warms up to him quicker. make More conflict with gray and darkstripe being half brothers and have him be friends with dustpaw instead. he uses jokes to mask his own feelings but internal,y he is conflicted over wanting to be friends with firestar or disappointing his clique of clanmates
okay okay hear me out but silverstream & sandstorm. they r dating !! sandstorm doesn’t have any canonical parents here so she leaves for riverclan with her and they have a litter with the help of some guy idk. silverstream still dies in childbirth and sandstorm, wracked with grief eventually leaves the clans with her kits when tensions with thunderclan start to get high. stay with me here but she eventually joins bloodclan w her kits because that would make feather and storm a Lot more interesting
uhh back at home bluestar should have a closer bond with tigerstar. remember her taking in whitekit n stuff? do That with bluestar and just have her like kits a lot. would make more cents with the oak heart stuff idk!! they are pals but he is evil so on and so forth
i like ravenpaw for the most part but he should be the main one who pulls graystripe from his clique bc fire is kinda out of touch when it comes to serious emotion. he leaves afterward and the two bond <3 i don’t really have any idea of who fire should be mates with here to be honest but either sand Or gray is cool. wait a second if sandstorm graystripe can she be mates with millie?? never thought of that before it’s cute. she can still be the surrogate mother of leaf & squirrel too
OH scourge. to be honest i never really found the appeal of having the brother revelation not being known by either fire or him sooo. up the tensions a little here!! scourge should live ofc by idk maybe princess stops fire from killing him?? something like That and here’s my great idea guys instead of having poor barley be alive at the end of graystripes vow make it scourge. just some crusty old man telling warriors cats roleplayers stories of old and really wishing he were a ghost rn
neeew prophecy uhh . uhhhhhh feather and storm move back to riverclan and have Cool backstory now yahoo!! squirrelflight lesbian i like her and tawnypelt together <3 nightleaf cannon make her sad cause she has stupid crowfeather as a mate and run away w leafpool. she has the kits (we r going to Ignore the fact that they would all be black furred because of reincarnation bullshit) and so on. um i don’t know how to fix the mess that is brambleclaw but honestly i think he should keep his characterization from the first book and just be Some Guy like brackenfur or whatever. squirrelflight is like his sister in law so his later descent into Bad territory still has the weird power balance nepotism thing + he can still be alder and sparks dad
assfur?? keep him the same ig people seem to like the fire scene but make him a lot more of a loser. cinderholly cannon umm lionblaze has a more interesting character arc where he struggles with his powers leaving him a possible danger to others. make jayfeather hate him and other disabled warriors less dear god and have him decide to be a med on his own after training under brightheart for a while. night and leaf can have a messy breakup and get back together in starclan (as a treat ❤️) and breezepelt has parent drama because neither of his parents truly love one another and are still caught up on lovers from the past. make him regret his actions more and give him a proper redemption arc pwease thank youuu
my brain is pretty fried rn but that’s like.., all i’ve got for ideas atm so there u go!! uh last additions rootshadow real have briss look more like hawkfrost to tie into brambles trust in her and you know what give that bitch rabies and then have him be possessed. good night

Thoughts on ‘Veil of Shadows’
My post about The Silent Thaw seemed to gain some attention, so I’m doing that again.
Warning: Spoilers and some swearing bc we be shook.
The allegiances already had me weeping, bastard man as deputy??? No thanks
Then the prologue came along and I was shooken bc that’s my bOY
Jayfeather recognising Bramblestar’s voice sent me, that’s his dad!!
Bristlefrost continues to be an espionage queen, I loved her so much in this book, like damn look at that character development.
Speaking of development, hello Rootspring
Bitch really went from being an edgy little emo child to a confident king, we stan
Violetshine talking about Darktail also had me crying, why don’t we ever talk about how much this girl went through?
Bramblefake really made Flipclaw a medicine cat just because ‘birds live in the sky!!!!! And they had sparkling eyes!!!!! Like stars!!!!!!!!!’ I was screaming
Bramblefake just exiling cats left and right was peak comedy
Honestly kinda mad that Rootbristle is probably gonna be a thing, like him having a crush is adorable, but please stop there
Shadowsight in his spirit form confronting the imposter gave me c h i l l s, I was literally shaking
Also, the imposter has blue eyes. It’s Ashfur isn’t it?
Tigerheartstar is kinda growing on me just because he’s such a good dad.
Greystripe standing up to Bramblefake was iconic, yes bitch we love you.
Leafstar gets better with every page
The suicide scene was.....questionable
But also, Starclan is trapped by a fucking...bramble bush....guys
The battle scene was pretty good, love how Tawnypelt literally yeeted Berrynose, what a queen
Also ROSEPETAL IS DEAD IM SO MAD
When I tell you I cried, I mean I genuinely sobbed, I love Rose so much
All the clans being like ‘hol up’ when Harestar died and everyone turning on Bramblefake was 👌
‘I came back for you.’ It’s totally Ashfur
Bristlefrost being relieved when Squirrelflight didn’t keep her as deputy, honestly same girl
Mistystar how dare you exile my girl Mothwing, I am mad
Not to mention the fact that Mistystar is still alive??
And finally, another cliffhanger?? Bitch really??
Final thoughts: I think this book is probably an 8/10 (really good, but not as good as The Silent Thaw), and the imposter is 100% Ashfur

Feel like breaking down the leaders as well so...
Bramblestar
How I feel about this character
In canon, I’m not a huge fan of him, especially after Squirrelflight’s Hope. I like douche characters, but not when we’re supposed to like them and not see them like that. Thankfully in this AU, that gets fixed
All the people I ship romantically with this character
In terms of this AU, Squirrelflight and Jessy. In canon, them but also Sorreltail kinda. And Stormfur. Definitely Stormfur. Probably Feathertail too
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Him and Tawnypelt/star, as well as him and Hawkfrost. I also love the idea of him and Swiftpaw since that’s his older half brother
My unpopular opinion about this character
Honestly with how he treated her, Bramblestar would’ve been better off not with Squirrelflight (probably with Jessy). God I hate canon
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
So many things. Mostly him not being a douche to Squirrelflight so much
Tawnystar
How I feel about this character
She deserved better. I fully believe she should’ve become ShadowClan’s leader instead of Tigerheartstar
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Her and Rowanclaw/star and Feathertail. Both in this AU and in canon
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Her and Bramblestar, Mothwing, and her children and grandchildren (especially Shadowsight and Strikestone)
My unpopular opinion about this character
I don’t know if I have one? She’s definitely a pale tortoiseshell and not like what her art shows
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEADER
Sedgestar
How I feel about this character
Deserves more acknowledgement
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Emberfoot, maybe Dovewing
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Definitely Sedgestar and Gorsetail. She’s Gorsetail’s only surviving kit, and they’re very close to each other as a result
My unpopular opinion about this character
Also not sure if I have one. Definitely a better deputy choice than Crowfeather though
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
That she would actually get more attention
Minnowstar
How I feel about this character
Another character who deserves more attention
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Mousewhisker. That’s about it really
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Her and the other Dark Forest trainees
My unpopular opinion about this character
I like to believe she was actually a spy in the Dark Forest for RiverClan. Either that or she was manipulated into it by being told she could be with Mousewhisker since the Clans wouldn’t like that
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Again, that she would get more attention. She’s at least got it better than Sedgestar in canon though.
Leafstar
How I feel about this character
In canon, she’s probably the only leader with any fucking brain cells
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Echosong and Billystorm
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Her, Firestar, and Sandstorm
My unpopular opinion about this character
I’m actually kinda wishing she dies in The Broken Code (in canon). She’s had such a long life, she’s probably not much younger than Mistystar is in canon, let them rest please
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
That her kits lived longer (except for Harrybrook/Echobrook, I like that he’s still alive)
I might go ahead and do this for the deputies/medicine cats as well

Hello it’s been a while so here are my thoughts on VEIL OF SHADOWS
Ok I’m gonna get this out of the way:
I’m loving The Broken Code
I think it’s really well written and it’s been one of my favorite arcs
Like I’d say that the first three (or really the second and third) books of AVoS are my favorite arc, then the original series, and then TBC
Now here come the spoilers
Be warned
First of all, I honestly think that Shadowsight should’ve died in the prologue
I think it would’ve been a really interesting twist to have him as a spirit for the rest of the arc
My favorite chapters were Shadowsight’s ghost chapters (ESPECIALLY the one where he talks to the imposter)
Like having Shadowsight in the world of the dead, Bristlefrost in the land of the living, and Rootspring bridging the gap would’ve been so amazing
Alas
HarperCollins are cowards
That said, I did like Shadowsight a lot in this book
Tigerheartstar is an amazing dad even if I don’t like him that much
Shadowsight’s connection to Spiresight was sweet but Spiresight was acting a little sus tbh
Telling Shadowsight that being a ghost is better
Maybe he was just lonely but idk it seemed a little
Shady
To me
(I’m sorry)
ANYWAYS MOVING ON
We have to talk about that scene
You know the one
Okay in all seriousness, I really think that the fandom blew the suicide scene way out of proportion
Like I was expecting it to be Stemleaf or one of the Rebels jumping off a cliff or slitting their throat in defiance of Fakestar but nope
It was just Shadowsight eating some berries with no real intention of dying
Was it insentitive to people with suicidal tendencies? Yes.
Was it poorly handled? Absolutely.
But Shadowsight wasn’t actually in any danger. He was in the medicine den with Puddleshine right next to him and, as a medicine cat, he likely knew that they had a full stock of yarrow
Obviously the Erins and HarperCollins treating suicide like an easily reversible decision was incredibly disrespectful
But I’ve seen a lot of people saying that there were other ways for Shadowsight to reach the Dark Forest and I completely disagree. The Moonpool was broken and StarClan/the DF were completely cut off. No one could reach them
The only evidence we’d actually seen of them at this point were Shadowsight’s visions, and those are involuntary
Now, I don’t think that it should have been necessary at all for Shadowsight to reach the Dark Forest. I honestly think it would have been better to keep the reason that StarClan is cut off a mystery
Something to keep driving the books forward
And I think that the explanation of DF cats cutting them off by making a barrier around their connection with the living kind of ruins the lore and mystery surrounding StarClan
Well, what was left of the lore and mystery anyways
Idk how I felt about the imposter trapping Bramblestar in the DF
Like I think it would’ve been a lot cooler if he’d actually faded so much that the living couldn’t see him anymore
REGARDLESS
My point is, I don’t think Shadowsight’s attempted suicide should have been in the book at all and I don’t think that the entire DF sequence should’ve been there either
But if the DF sequence existed
Then Shadowsight’s attempted suicide would have to exist as well
Moving on
I’d like to talk about Bristlefrost (can we talk about Bristlefrost, please? I’ve been dying to talk about Bristlefrost)
Overall, I think Bristlefrost had the strongest narration in this book
I loved seeing her relationship with the Rebels AND with Fakestar
I loved seeing her spy
And I loved seeing her build a relationship with Squirrelflight
It was sad to see her Clanmates hating her, but it felt natural and completely realistic for someone in her situation
Her scenes of seeing Fakestar complaining to Alderheart about pain, seeing his weakness, and seeing him talking to a ghost (whom Bristlefrost couldn’t see) were some of my favorite scenes in the book
They drove home that the Imposter isn’t invincible and that he’s weakening
And I loved how those scenes contrasted to seeing him fight off the Rebels and actually manage to kill THREE GROWN WARRIORS on his own
He’s completely unpredictable and has unchecked power and that makes him a great villain
Seeing his paranoia (which resulted in Berrynose’s exile) was really interesting
Bristlefrost got some nice development in this book
I liked seeing her struggle as deputy and I liked that she was relieved to step down at the end
The only thing I didn’t really like about Bristlefrost in this book was that she admitted that she had feelings for Rootspring
That felt completely out of left field
Like all of her narration felt like she saw him more as a friend or even a little brother
She never really showed any interest in him romantically
So I hated that
I feel like it’s only there to drive the plot forward and sacrificing character growth for the sake of plot is not! good! writing!
It’s kind of funny though — I think that each protagonist has had their own book to shine
Like I think that Shadowsight was the best protagonist in Lost Stars, Rootspring was the best in The Silent Thaw, and Bristlefrost was the best in Veil of Shadows
Wow and those were the cats on the covers of their respective books
Hadn’t noticed that
Anyways onto Rootspring
Oh Rootspring
Out of the three protagonists, I think Rootspring has shown the most character growth
He started out as a whiny apprentice in Lost Stars and grew into a complex, likable, but still flawed character
I loved seeing his relationship with his family in this book, especially his growing acceptance of Tree (more on that when I talk about Tree’s Roots)
Seeing Rootspring’s growing friendship with Shadowsight was great
I feel like, unlike in all the other arcs, the protagonists of this arc are pretty detached from one another
Like Bristlefrost and Rootpaw are friends, and now Rootpaw is starting to become friends with Shadowsight
But Bristlefrost and Shadowsight have no relationship (I don’t think they’ve interacted even once? Correct me if I’m wrong) and that’s strange because they’re actually kin
Rootspring’s relationship with Dewspring was also nice
I liked seeing Dewspring grow to respect his apprentice
I honestly thought that Rootspring’s little stint as a medicine cat apprentice was unnecessary
I was glad that he got to choose to be a warrior in the end (unlike other forced medicine cats), but I was frustrated that those chapters could’ve been filled with something else (and probably something more interesting)
Unfortunately, I didn’t think Rootspring’s chapters were very interesting without Brambleghost
The only chapters of his that I really enjoyed were his chapters with Shadowsight (especially when he rescued Shadowsight)
Rootspring is a likable character but that didn’t make his chapters any less boring
Here are some other notes:
The battle at the end was good but it felt a little rushed (especially since Bristlefrost didn’t actually fight)
I’m pretty upset that Rosepetal died bc I really liked her and I thought she had great character potential
Every scene in the rebel camp was great
I loved seeing these cats being forced to cooperate with each other
Like Bristlefrost said, I’d love to know more about Jayfeather and Mothwing’s relationship
Seeing Lionblaze and Crowfeather begrudgingly cooperating was fun
I think the real star of this book was Squirrelflight
She was a fantastic leader in the rebel camp (despite Crowfeather also being a deputy)
The scene where Squirrelflight and Mothwing faked Squirrelflight’s death was very clever and I completely understand why Jayfeather wouldn’t want to risk severely wounding his mother
I just wish we’d actually gotten to witness the actual wounding and not just the aftermath
I don’t think it’ll happen, but I really hope we get Squirrelstar by the end of this arc
I don’t like that she chose Lionblaze as a deputy though
Not just because he’s boring, but because he’s only trained one apprentice (and that apprentice broke the Code and switched Clans), and he’s never really shown any leadership potential
He’s always been more of a follower
Also i will always adore seeing Lionblaze and Jayfeather interacting with Squirrelflight
Some other standout characters in this book (there were a lot):
Alderheart:
Seeing him standing up to the Imposter was fantastic
My boy finally grew a spine
I just wish he hadn’t left Flipclaw and ThunderClan all alone
Flipclaw:
This poor boy
He was really fucked over in this book
But it was nice to see a side character getting some development and actual characterization (especially since he’s Bristlefrost’s littermate)
Berrynose:
It was nice to see that he actually thought that Bramblestar was a good cat (just misguided)
He was a good deputy (surprisingly)
In the end, I felt bad for him
He was completely taken advantage of and taken for granted
I never liked Berrynose but I was sad about his death
The way that Tawnypelt killed him was brutal (but great), and I hope that he’s at peace with his siblings and Honeyfern in StarClan
(Even though I know he’s not)
Mothwing:
Seeing her reject Mistystar’s invitation back into RiverClan was great and it felt completely in-character for her
I’ve seen a lot of people saying that Mistystar acted OOC in this book, but I disagree
We know from Mistystar’s Omen AND from her actions in AVoS that Mistystar is a proud cat and that she has great pride in both RiverClan and StarClan
I fully believe that she’d do whatever it takes to bring StarClan back, including exiling Mothwing (a named codebreaker)
Especially given that she’s forced Mothwing to step down once before
I also think that her old age might have made her even more proud and harsh (for example, exiling Icewing and Harelight due to codebreaking and burying Dappletuft without honors)
Back to Mothwing
It was nice to see her standing up for herself (especially after reading Mothwing’s Secret) and I liked that she was willing to do what was necessary to help Squirrelflight
Sparkpelt also had a great moment in this book
As did Graystripe
Stemleaf and Spotfur were also great and I was sad to see Stemleaf go
Their friendship with Bristlefrost was really nice
I’m actually kind of excited for Spotfur’s novellas
I hope we get to see her interacting with Lionblaze more
He’s her father and they were together in the rebel camp
I hope to see more from Ivypool, Twigbranch, and Violetshine in the coming books (ESPECIALLY Ivypool)
Another standout: Leafstar
She continues to be the smartest leader
And finally
The Imposter
We all know who it is at this point
It’s Ashfur
But he was fantastic in this book
His conversation with Shadowsight was so fun to read and his last words in the book were chilling
I still think he has an accomplice but we shall see
Overall I liked this book
It had its weaknesses, but I think it’s strengths greatly outweighed them
Warriors is never gonna be perfect but the books can still be pretty damn good
And this was one of the better ones

For the character ask: Tawnypelt?
First impression
My first impression was I honestly didn’t think much of her. The first book I read was Moonrise and she spends most of that one in the background injured and making snarky comments/
Impression now
One of my favorites and I adore her.
Favorite moment
When she tells Brambleclaw not to train Tigerstar because he’s a great warrior without him.
Idea for a story
Based on my AU but Tawnypelt, Snowbird and Ratscar as apprentices together. [Tigerclaw’s Fury do not interact.]
Unpopular opinion
Tawnypelt deserved so much better than Rowanclaw. He spends all of series two making snide comments about her relationship to ThunderClan and Brambleclaw and then the Erins “give him a mate to make up for forgetting his gender” which is frankly kind of gross. I would’ve rather she ended up with Ratscar or Cedarheart, which could’ve been interesting given her mate would’ve been retired due to an injury.
Favorite relationship
Probably her and Brambleclaw. Sucker for sibling relationships.
Favorite headcanon
That Tawnypelt looks the most like Tigerstar out of all his children in terms of facial structure and build, Brambleclaw just inherited his fur color.

Lost Stars Commentary - Part 2
Alright continuing with my boy Rootpaw
Rootpaw and Shadowpaw sharing a common problem and bonding over it is the stuff I like to see. I can’t wait to see how their friendship develops, and if it’ll become the new AlderPuddle.
The voice talking to Shadowpaw is a tom and has a problem with the three and Squirrelflight, which makes me think Ashfur. But then he also mentions Twigbranch and Tree so I’m curious what’s up with that. If it really is Ashfur, would he also want to harm Alderheart and Sparkpelt since those are Squirrelflight’s children?
I could also see it being Tigerstar or Hawkfrost, but then I question how that works because their spirits were killed? Can they come back, cause if so then Spottedleaf can come back too.
If this spirit is telling Shadowpaw to kill Bramblestar when he gets sick so he comes out good as new, that would be so morally unethical.
I love Bristlefrost confiding in her mentor. I love Rosepetal still showing concern for her even after she’s no longer a mentor. Thank you for fixing mentor-apprentice relationships.
Calling it now, Rosepetal liked Bumblestripe and he had been chasing after Dovewing the whole time.
“You always has a soft spot for weak cats” Oh no. Yeah, Bramblestar would never say that to Squirrelflight. That’s a hard jab at her. I would not be surprised if it’s Ashfur.
So Bramblestar is sick now, but the real Bramblestar seems to be present. The way he talked to Alderheart so lovingly, saying how he’s glad he was honest, but then looks at Jayfeather and basically makes a jab about lying... Is this cat mad about the whole secret?
The description of Bramblestar spasming and opening his jaw to the heavens in a silent wail is one of the most terrifying scenes I’ve read. Seriously, reread that scene and visualize it.
Rootpaw’s crush on Bristlefrost is cute and innocent, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
“The Moonpool is a special place touched only by medicine cats” I can think of multiple occasions where that has been contradicted, but ok Jayfeather.
Breezepelt: “Hooray!” What a blessing.
Moonpool is still frozen, and it’s likely solid the whole way through. That is truly terrifying actually.
Squirrelflight yelling at her sons to fix Bramblestar is heartbreaking. Based on what I can gather for Squirrelflight’s Hope, it really strengthened her and Bramblestar’s current relationship.
Lionblaze is protective of his dad, aw that’s cute.
“So I know these instructions aren’t coming from StarClan” THANK YOU JAYFEATHER! Finally, he says something that is logical and admits that what Shadowpaw is experiencing doesn’t add up. The voice Shadowpaw is hearing already sounds suspicious, and with the medicine cats not being able to talk to StarClan, it is entirely possible Shadowpaw is talking to someone else, and we don’t know if that’s a good thing.
“Why would StarClan seek out a ShadowClan medicine cat, and not one from ThunderClan or one of the other clans?” I can’t believe they’re becoming self-aware that ThunderClan is special and that ShadowClan is the “evil clan”. Poor ShadowClan.
Tigerheartstar is a good dad and that’s the only good thing about him.
“Delusional little flea-pelt” Jayfeather what the heck is wrong with you. Shadowpaw is a child. Can you please leave him alone?!
“I believe Shadowpaw means well. He truly thinks he is helping. But in my opinion, none of his visions have ever sounded as if they come from StarClan” Then why are you so mean to him Jayfeather? You’re being so unnecessarily mean to this child, while you could just, I don’t know, express these concerns to Puddleshine??
Bristlefrost just fell in the lake but Spotfur saved her. I wish they gave us a little bit more here to show some of the other aspects of Spotfur. The patrol could’ve talked more about their concerns to give us more interactions.
Alderheart has grown so much. The fear for his father is totally understandable and I love seeing him use his authority and trying to talk to his mother about what to do.
I agree with Tawnypelt. You have to tell your clan what is going on. Good for you Tawnypelt, you tell Tigerheartstar how it is!
So Shadowpaw just got another vision with a fiery forest and it’s the same thing as what Rootpaw saw way earlier. What I noticed the most is that there’s a focus on the ash that falls on Rootpaw and the ash that Shadowpaw swallows. Shadowpaw could be consuming the ash in his vision because Ashfur is consuming his thoughts? Just... the focus on ash makes me think Ashfur.
Poor Dovewing wants to warn the other clans about Shadowpaw’s vision. She’s thinking about her family in ThunderClan and all the other friends she’s made. Dovewing is a great character because her loyalty never lied with one clan, but rather with everyone. I think she’d be a great mediator for ShadowClan since she has everyone’s best interests at heart.
"An apprentice is a real medicine cat, thank you very much. And it’s not for us to tell StarClan where to send their messages” Thank you Jayfeather! Now you’re coming around. Support your fellow medicine cats.
I like how he further affirms that he doesn’t think Shadowpaw is making it up. Now Jayfeather is actually expressing what he’s thinking. Good.
I imagine Rootpaw’s reaction when Tree speaks up at the gathering like: “Ugh, dad whyyyyy” But that’s just Rootpaw 24/7
So Shadowpaw is going to ThunderClan and Tigerheartstar, Puddleshine, AND Dovewing are all coming with... Do you ever wonder if Pouncestep and Lightleap feel left out? Because their dad spends every waking moment with his mate and son, there’s no room for them. Poor side-siblings.
Ok so this scene with Shadowpaw, Dovewing, Tigerheartstar, Jayfeather, Alderheart, and Puddleshine all sitting around Bramblestar’s body is BEGGING for some interaction. I want more than just “it’s our duty as a medicine cat”, and “Oh I used to be in ThunderClan”. It’s generic. Give me Dovewing asking Jayfeather how he’s and everyone else has been. Give me anxiety filled Alderheart starting to breathe erratically and Puddleshine goes and comforts him. Give me Tigerheartstar’s troubled eyes as he wonders what he’s going to tell Tawnypelt. ANY of that would’ve made this scene so much better.
HE KILLED HIM! I mean I knew Bramblestar would lose a life so yeah he’d die, but gosh knowing him now, poor Shadowpaw has so much crap coming his way ;-;
Tigerheartstar’s panic as he ushers Dovewing, Puddleshine, and Shadowpaw out is really great. Like yeah, your son just killed ThunderClan’s leader, you have to start running. Dovewing wants to talk to Squirrelflight and her mate is like NOPE.
This funeral is great, in a heartbreaking sense. It’s emotional and knowing these characters and what they say just makes it hurt that much more. Squirrelfight talking about the journey and how she fell in love with Bramblestar. Lionblaze calling Bramblestar his father, and a great one at that. I’m tearing up just reading it.
Jayfeather can’t even finish speaking and is consumed by anger and grief. It’s just how his character would grieve and I totally understand him yelling at Squirrelflight. It hurts, he’s hurting, it’s awful.
I’m sorry, I laughed when they used the word “rippled” because all I could think of was the rippling muscles of all dark brown tabby toms.
“Greetings. It’s good to be with you again.” NOPE. NOPE. That’s not Bramblestar. ‘Greetings’ is a cursed word from him. I don’t like that Squirrelflight is super affectionate to him too right away. And that choice of words. “Be with you again”? Ew, if this is Ashfur I’m literally disgusted.
Oh no and Shadowpaw. His clanmates all hate him because he killed a beloved leader. Tawnypelt is devastated because she had already lost most of her family last series, and now here goes her brother.
Awww Lionblaze is part of the group sent to thank Shadowpaw. That’s cute.
Shadowpaw is right. Tigerheartstar telling him how special he is and putting all that pressure on him is super uncomfortable.
After writing Kestrelpaw in Power of Twelve, and always reading Kestrelflight in the books as a curious but kind cat who always wants the best for others, it’s so weird hearing Kestrelflight have a prejudice against ShadowClan and being hostile.
Not-Bramblestar is framing the situation that Shadowpaw is the ONLY connection to StarClan and ONLY he can be trusted. That sounds like it’ll be used against Jayfeather later. All of the codebreakers for that matter.
Mosspelt jabbing at current day warriors oh my gosh. Mosspelt you nursed two half-clan kits, don’t even!!
Shadowpaw should be more concerned because his visions of codebreakers are really inconsistent. For example, he sees Twigbranch in his dream, but not Violetshine, who left ShadowClan to join SkyClan. He sees Dovewing in the dream, but not Tawnypelt who also left her clan for another. He doesn’t see Crowfeather, who took a medicine cat mate. He sees Lionblaze, who is the product of a half-clan relationship but has done nothing else, but he doesn’t see Pouncestep or Lightleap who are the same. The codebreaker vision is flawed, and Shadowpaw should soon see that.
I’m surprised Violetshine never told her kits about Needletail. It’s a painful memory though so makes sense.
Tree is absolutely right about Darktail and this situation and I commend him for making that connection.
Rootpaw was absolutely willing to break the code to be mates with Bristlefrost and that’s honestly like... wow.
Wait. Bramblestar. WAIT. WAIT. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT

Ok this is super late but Path of a Warrior Reviews (cause they're short and I’m not ready to read the new series yet)
Overall these were all better than I expected them to be???
Sure there’s definitely some clunky parts in each of them, but I was expecting far worse. None of them were Bad
Redtail’s Debt
- Redpaw was super cute!! I really liked how he admired Tigerclaw so much, but it was easy to see how Tigerclaw had already started on his dark path even while Sunstar was leader.
- I do wish Tigerclaw wasn’t so overly evil while still a young warrior (he looks like a masochist in this book, when really this would have been a good opportunity to show off Tigerclaw’s other characteristics than being bloodthirsty and violent)
- I like how Redtail goes from being a timid apprentice to a wise warrior and deputy, he was obviously a great choice for the position
- I wish we saw Whitestorm and Lionheart more in this book, they seemed to strike me as cats who would be close friends
- I don’t even want to talk about the crazy inconsistency with Redtail killing Oakheart. Now there are three different tellings of that battle at Sunningrocks! Which one is the truth?????
- I honestly don’t really mind the 180 in Ravenpaw’s character because witnessing your role model murdering your own clanmate and deputy is a traumatic thing to witness. Ravenpaw was also barely out of the nursery, so it makes sense that this would change him. My only worry about it is that the other characters in Into The Wild acted as if his behavior was normal and that he was always jumpy and nervous.
- I rate it a 5/10
Tawnypelt’s Clan
- I complained about Tawnypelt’s character in her novella but honestly it wasn’t a bad story and there were lots of good parts.
- I wish there was some mention of Feathertail and the sacrifice she made for the Tribe... seeing as she visits the tribe. I wish she went to like see Feathertail’s grave or something. Just, as like a character moment.
- I wish she and Stormfur talked more in the novella, I know they have a conversation but... I just felt like it wasn’t enough since they went on a literal life changing journey together as young adults
- I felt like the novella wasn’t really long enough to tell the whole story, I feel like there were so many more character moments that could have been shared between Tawnypelt and Dovewing (like the shared “I have a sibling in ThunderClan”, which is implied but they never make that connection outright with each other)
- I wish Tawnypelt saw her children Dawnpelt and Flametail in addition to Rowanclaw in her dream/vision
- I don’t really get why she steps down from being deputy, I mean I’m not gonna flip out over it because I know Tawnystar will never be a thing at this point, but her Clan needs her experience????
- I wish Tigerstar the first was mentioned more, especially since her son is literally also named Tigerstar...
- I find it ironic that this novella is called Tawnypelt’s Clan but the whole thing is spent talking about the Tribe
- Shadowkit is freakin adorable
- I rate it a 6/10
Shadowstar’s Life
- Ok I know lots of people didn’t like this one BUT THIS ONE WAS MY FAVORITE
- I barely remember any of the DOTC characters but I felt like this novella focused on the characters that were important and showed off their personalities well
- I like how we know all of Shadowstar’s deaths, I don’t think we know all of them for any of the leaders in the series besides her
- I was worried that they would do a 180 on Shadowstar’s character to fit the description of her death in one of the field guides (where they say she lost her last life first in a battle she started) but they ACTUALLY found a way to comply with canon but also not make her a completely different character!!!!
- The above makes you wonder how in the hell the Redtail disaster got through editing
- I will admit the villain was weak, but also again this is a ten chapter novella so I think it’s just the length that hurts the story. These novellas should really be like 15 chapters (Or change in length depending on what is needed for the story!!!!)
- (((OR maybe this should have been a super edition I would’ve read the hell out of that)))
- Windstar was a boss ass bitch in this one, if I was more into the DOTC characters I’d be a huge Windstar/Shadowstar shipper
- Clear Sky is always just fucking strange as usual like he constantly yo-yos and goes back on his previous character development
- Thunderstar is a goddamn idiot but I love him still
- The ending where Shadowstar and Quick Water die at the same time was kind of a lame cop out BUT I LIKED THE PART WHERE SHADOWSTAR FORGAVE HER OKAY IM wEAK IM SORRY
- The ending-ending with gray wing made me cry okay like fUCKKKKKKK
- I rate this novella an 8/10 I genuinely enjoyed this one

My Opinion of Redtail’s Debt
I’m writing these out while reading the book so I don’t forget anything! This is just a way to motivate me to read. This is really long sorry. WARNING SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT
Chapter One
I liked it! Not much to say here it was kind of a boring chapter, not much happened. I kind of like how Redpaw seems admire Tigerclaw but can also tell he’s just too ready to fight. I don’t have much to say cause I read it a couple days ago and can’t remember much lol.
Chapter Two
- Wasn’t White-eye born with one blind eye? Am I just dumb?
- I like how Red is a little awkward around Sparrow and White. Like they’re being all lovey-dovey and he’s just like “I’ll . . Just be over there I guess … ”
- “[Redpaw] couldn’t help the warm curl of admiration that ran through him. He’s so brave.” Redpaw do you have a little crush? Honestly though … The way Red is talking about Tiger gives me little crush feels. I don’t ship it of course it’s just kind of cute. THIS IS FUTURE DASH SORRY I JUST REALIZED THEY’RE RELATED! I will say that I enjoy Red’s admiration of Tigerclaw though ;w; Please disregard any crush things you see in the future, I did not realize they were related I’m so sorry. in my au they’re not related so I hope you can forgive me cause I forgot that my AU isn’t canon eheheh sorry
- I wish Spottedpaw and Redpaw had more of an interaction than just “Here’s your herbs stay safe”. I like Willowpaw so far honestly?
- I miss the forest territories :(!
- I’ll kick that hawk’s ass how dare he hurt my son
Chapter Three
- “‘Don’t leave me,” [Redpaw] whimpered.“ DON’T LEAVE THE POOR BOY PLEASE.
- I like Sparrow’s interactions with Redpaw, especially when he thinks he might be hurt. He really seems to care for his apprentice.
- I really love Willowpaw. Scared for her brother :(!
- "If there’s anything I can ever do for you, T-Tigerclaw, just name it,” … “I owe you everything.” That seems like it’s gonna come and bite Red in the ass :/
- Tigerclaw obviously is just trying to get on Redpaw’s good side and I love it
- “You owe me more than one,” [Tigerclaw] purred cheerfully, “you owe me your life!” Please don’t turn that on him I know your evil but my poor son doesn’t deserve this!
Chapter Four
- Adderfang is a good dad! Supportive of his son! I love him!
- Runningkit and Mousekit I adore them.
- I know 100% that RunningRed is not going to be canon cause the editors suck, but honestly? I just wanna take this time to say that I absolutely adore them.
- Tigerclaw is scaring me lol
- AWW SWIFTBREEZE! I love Red, Willow’s, and Spotted’s good parents ;w;!
- I forgot the Clan thought Misty, Stone, and Moss were Blue’s and Thrush’s for a sec. I wish Thrushpelt could have seen them grow up :(
- Bluefur is so strong I adore her
- Tigerclaw’s taking Redtail out hunting and I’m nervous …
- Aw I love Sorrelpaw!!
- Don’t make fun of my son Tigerbitch
-
Tumblr media
SORRELPAW
- YOU TELL HIM STAGLEAP! NO ONE HURTS SORRELPAW
- Please don’t hurt Stagleap ;w;
- Hhhh oh no Red and Tiger’s relationship seems really abusive and I hope it doesn’t turn out like SH ;n;
Chapter Five
- Runningkit I love you
- My poor Redson
- Sunstar don’t be too harsh please
- BCJAJXJX TIGERCLAW SHUT THE HELL YOUR FACE SORRELPAW DID IT ON ACCIDENT
- Red speak up please! Poor boy.
- Noooo my little red boy stop. You don’t owe Tigerclaw anything
- I’m glad Sunstar was reasonable enough to talk to Heaterstar
- Talltail! My boy!!
- Tigerclaw and Thistleclaw are little bitches I hate them
- Sunstaaar just listen to what Heather has to say
- Crookedstar and Cedarstar don’t want anything to do with Wind and Thunder’s drama
- I love Stagleap. He seems really level-headed but firm. I can’t remember him much from Tallstar’s Revenge heck
- I honestly like that Redtail sees Tigerclaw as a good cat so he can’t bring himself to say that he was wrong. It’s … Hard sometimes. I understand.
- Stagleap is a good, reasonable boy <3
- “I owe him everything … But does that mean i have to follow him, no matter what?” HHH that hits a little too close to home honestly
- Lol why wouldn’t Sunstar believe Redtail? He was there, plus he knows that Tigerclaw is too aggressive for his own good. Redtail just talk to him.
- Sunstar I love you but you’re a bit of a dummy :/
- Ooohh I honestly love Tigerclaw in this book so far. He’s pretty chilling. But uh LEAVE MY POOR SON ALONE
Chapter Six
- I like Brindleface and Frostfur’s relationship
- Poor Red boy :(
- YES REDDY CALL TIGERCLAW OUT FOR HIS BULLSHIT
- YESSSS GASLIGHTING Sorry I just like abused characters. But it seems like Redtail is gonna be treated the exact same as Spotted so :/? That’s real disappointing. Remember, if someone is abusing you please seek help! You aren’t obligated to stay with them if they’re hurting you, physically or emotionally!
- Don’t hurt the elders and queens please :(
- Honestly with Bluefur’s past and the death of her mother, I’m surprised she’d want to go through with this? Come on Erins she’s probably traumatized by WindClan’s camp.
- Only … Only six cats? This is a whole camp you’re barging into guys
- I really hope Tigerclaw and Thistleclaw don’t kill anyone
- I love WindClan’s camp honestly I love WindClan
- Aren’t Red and Patch brothers? I kind of wish they had more of a brotherly relationship :/
- I lied they’re cute
- HXJSXJ “WE’RE NOT GOING TO HURT YOUR KITS” THRUSHPELT SAYS AS HIS CLAN ATTACKS WINDCLAN CAMP
- Poor Ryestalk!!
- :( I feel bad for the kits. Poor things are losing their den
- Barkboy <333
- Bluefur learned her lesson about the med den
- Redtail it’s not your fault!
- BEAT TIGER’S ASS STAGLEAP
- Poor Plumclaw and Ryestalk. I hope they come out okay
- I LOVE YOU REDTAIL YOU’RE SO BRAVE
- Fuck yeah I Redtail stare him down
- YOU TELL HIM REDSON! <3333
Chapter Seven
- Idk if they’ve said this before but “They haven’t changed a whisker” is my favorite phrase from Warriors idk why
- You go Redtail don’t let Tigerclaw scare you
- Yeah I hate the fact that Sand isn’t Redtail’s daughter anymore :/ It might have been because now Squirrel and Bramble aren’t related anymore (which I’m sure they are somehow) But I wanted to see a cute relationship between Sand and Red!
- Darkstripe has a thorn in his tail because he is a thorn in the tail.
- :( Redtail don’ gooo
Chapter Eight
- I wish we could have seen some more Dust and Red interactions. Maybe see how Dustpaw was before Darktail got his dirty paws on him?
- Ehhh Ravenpaw’s OOC? But I can excuse it cause he hasn’t been traumatized yet
- I wish we saw that Ravenpaw and Redtail were closer maybe? Just cause I always liked the idea that Ravenpaw really looked up to Redtail and wished he could ask Bluestar if she could have him and Dustpaw swap mentors
Chapter Nine
- nooooo Ravenpaw would never say that ugh
- Tigerclaw leave Ravenpaw alone! He may not be the Ravenpaw i know but FUCK OFF
- What?? What happened to Oakheart was killed by falling rocks? didn’t everyone in RiverClan agree to that? Was their pride hurt so they lied???? What happened to “It would be immoral for a deputy to kill another deputy”?????? Ugh okay now I’m angry
Chapter Ten
- Ooo I love the murder scene though. It’s almost exactly how I imagined it
- NOOOOO YOU CAN’T DO THE UNFULFILLED PROMISES TO ME DUSTPAW WAS WAITING FOR HIM ;n:!!!!
- I love the scene where he’s being guided to StarClan by Sunstar omg . I’ve been waiting for a POV character in StarClan and even if this is the closest we’ll get, I’m happy
- OOH THAT last scene was good. Firepaw! I love him.
OKAY SO last thoughts:
Someone said that she-cats were brutalized so Redtail could seem like a good guy and I didn’t see it? Who were the she-cats??
Also, I think some people hated the fact that Redpaw admired Tigerclaw but. I liked that part. It was interesting. And it made sense! Tigerclaw was a strong, brave warrior who hadn’t shown his true intentions yet so. It makes sense that Redpaw admired him
Overall it was . . . good? Better than everyone said it’d be. I didn’t love it I didn’t hate it. It was just eh. I’d read it again. Redtail was a good cat who genuinely seemed loyal and brave, just like we wanted.
I’ll do Tawnypelt’s Clan next!!

Warriors Novella Rankings
because im bored lmao
obviously this is all my own opinion so please take that into consideration
Surprisingly Good: Pinestar’s Choice, Ravenpaw’s Farewell
I didn’t think much of Pinestar’s Choice up until a re-read. Despite a small continuity error with Goosefeather’s age and Pinestar’s... ew... relationship with Leopardpaw... it’s actually the best of the pre-Prophecies Begin novellas imo. Pinestar might be the first leader to really crack under the pressures of leadership and that’s just something we don’t ever see, plus it’s one of the few books that doesn’t demonize kittypets for being kittypets
Ravenpaw’s Farewell, even though I knew how it would end just from the title, didn’t fail to tear out my heartstrings. Ravenpaw’s relationship with Barley was so sweet, and his journey to bring Bella and Riley to SkyClan was heartwarming, right down to his death. He may have lived as a loner, but he died a warrior.
Good: Dovewing’s Silence, Tawnypelt’s Clan, Mapleshade’s Vengeance, Shadowstar’s Life
Dovewing’s novella is one I didn’t expect to be good - I was neutral on Dovewing until this one. I enjoy her struggle and how she feels alone in losing her power, and seeing the Clans struggle with their grief and anger after the Great Battle. I lovewing Dovewing~
Tawnypelt’s Clan is kept out of the Surprisingly Good tier for me mostly because I don’t know too many of the new ShadowClan cast and I haven’t read AVoS yet. I enjoyed her journey and banter with Dovewing and Shadowpaw and Tawnypelt’s unabashed roasting of her son.
Mapleshade’s Vengeance is a good novella. Maybe a little overrated, but I still really enjoy it. Whether you believe it was all Mapleshade’s fault or not, it’s a tragic story right up to the end.
Shadowstar’s Life was a murder mystery guys. A Murder Mystery. It was so fun to read Shadowstar’s growing paranoia as she began to suspect nearly everyone in all the Clans. The worst thing about this novella was the end - StarClan’s revelation of knowing everything that’s going to happen to the Clans contradicts literally every other book lmao but okay.
Decent: Leafpool’s Wish, Thunderstar’s Echo,  Goosefeather’s Curse
Leafpool’s Wish is a good explanation of how the Three were born and frankly it’s not a bad novella - what pulls it down for me is how it really highlights the inconsistencies in StarClan, and it really butchers Yellowfang’s character.
Thunderstar’s novella wasn’t bad but it wasn’t super good for me either. I didn’t hate Thunderstar in DotC but he wasn’t a favorite - he just doesn’t have a lot of stand-out character traits. However the novella does delve well into his grief at losing his long-time friend, so that’s a plus that keeps this one from being just Meh.
Goosefeather’s Curse, while not a super necessary novella, is a fairly good delve into Goosefeather’s tumultuous and upsetting life. Honestly, despite it being a good story, I didn’t see it as a truly necessary one - there are so many novellas that take place around the pre-Prophecies Begin times that Goosefeather’s Curse can feel like its telling a story we already know.
Meh: Cloudstar’s Journey, Hollyleaf’s Story
These aren’t bad novellas - they’re just... Meh. Granted, they were some of the first to come out and the Erins/WP were just finding their feet... but they’re not novella’s I think about rereading once in a while.
Hollyleaf’s Story is somewhat boring but a decent exploration into the titular character’s emotions. Cloudstar’s Journey wasn’t exactly a necessary story to tell but I’m not mad it exists - we could always use more SkyClan.
Unmemorable: Tigerclaw’s Fury, Mistystar’s Omen
One novella suffers from continuity errors and is just somewhat dull despite being about Tigerclaw, and the other really should have been Mothwing’s show, not Mistystar’s.
Bad: Redtail’s Debt
Redtail’s Debt feels poorly planned, right down to the end. From focusing too much on Redtail’s apprenticeship to botching the climax with a massive continuity error to a comically evil Tigerclaw that No One Suspects for some reason, this novella probably should have gone through another editing pass and focused more on Redtail as a warrior.
Worst of the Worst: Spottedleaf’s Heart
Honestly the one thing that makes this particular novella the Worst is how poorly handled the themes of CSA are. The lesson it imparts is basically “run away from the adult who is grooming you and hope they go away” instead of any other better option. No other cat questions Thistleclaw’s interest in Spottedpaw. Spottedpaw tells no one about Thistleclaw’s promises and threats despite mentioning the disparity in their age herself. There are so many ways WP could have taken the story but they just didn’t.
It’s unfortunate that these themes were so poorly handled - Spottedleaf’s Heart is a really good, proper prequel to The Prophecies Begin and goes very well alongside Bluestar’s Prophecy... if you ignore the terrible, terrible themes.
