So here's some extra info about the Pirate Peter AU. Yang is the character to cut off James's hand, since Peter thinks of James like a big brother he takes it the hardest while he waits for him to get better for days. James doesn't really understand why Peter makes such a big deal about it, pirates lose limbs it's what happens. They betray each other.

In other words James losing his hand is the tipping point for Peter to start thinking about mortality. Peter could remain a boy forever if he wanted to, but what about everyone else? Meanwhile James has to reconsider what normal means to him. Zarina is concerned about both of them and is the one to tell James he needs to expect better for himself than backstabbing murderers.

The ever-returning nightmare of being trapped, suffocating beneath the water as her glow fades she certainly does not speak of.

Finally, he speaks again. “I am glad you are not.”

It is the closest he has ever come to apologizing for what he did to her, all those years ago.
