Please can you tell me more about your idea of Hook as prince Eric?

I don’t think this was originally my idea--I seem to remember it being discussed waaay back in season 2, before we knew Hook’s backstory and when Ariel was in talks to make an appearance on the show.

Someone had the idea of Hook’s backstory being...well, that he was Prince Eric and that he lost his true love, Ariel, due to a deal with either Rumplestiltskin or the Sea Witch. (Or both) He became a pirate out of revenge and swore to avenge his true love/find his true love.

It was such a cool fucking idea that it’s stuck with me ever since and it makes me mad because Killian’s backstory turned out to be super fucking lame and boring.

Every once in a while, I’ll see a gifset with Ariel and Hook and I’ll feel embittered all over again, because this would’ve been such a cool backstory instead of the shitty one we got.

KJ Bang Train: Stop 3

We’re now venturing over water to a beachfront stop on our route. Though this stop is small in stature, it has quite a sturdy foundation. This is also the transition stop before we get to more headcanon stations. Drumroll please!

Or, uh, shell honk? Yes, I’m talking about…

Stop 3: Hookriel

Honestly, it’s a bit sad we only have one scene to go on for this one, but what a scene it was! And, given that it happened at the very end of the season, we are left with so much more to imagine now.

There is something beautiful about the fact that, just as he had lost hope of ever reuniting with Alice again, after years and years of searching for a cure and bargaining and traveling realms, there was still someone out there with an ounce of hope left to give him. Throughout the season, we get hints of how much he and Alice both struggled to find a way to reunite, and hearing in 7x21 that there was a moment he’d truly believed he’d exhausted all options and that finding happiness with her again was a lost cause is heartbreaking.

We don’t know the full history of this Ariel. We can imagine she, too, was enamored with humans, though we don’t know how much she knew Eric and what may have happened after the curse was never cast. From her trident and the lack of a bracelet, there’s potential that Eric is not in the picture and she’s risen up to be ruler of the seas, but again that’s not guaranteed so much as implied.

There are so many options for imagining how she and Killian first met and how long they’ve known each other. I doubt this version of her is willing to deal with his bullshit any more than the other version of herself is with his Storybrooke counterpart. And, well, color me a sucker for the couples that call each other on their nonsense.

I can’t imagine the gratitude he had toward her after she set him back on the path of getting back to Alice. I can’t imagine the days they may have spent together talking about his daughter or how much time they would have just spent getting to know each other over the sound of the ocean. Regardless of what I can’t imagine, it’s plain as day how much they care for each other even after a long separation:

Just look at that darling angelfish! Look at that happy, smitten little captain.

Not only are they absolutely thrilled to lay eyes on each other again, they also immediately trust each other. The moment he shows up, she listens to him regarding someone who is a clone of their most-feared enemy, Wish Rumple, and she gives him what is potentially the strongest weapon she has to protect herself again him—the squid ink—without a second thought.

They share a look, deep and knowing. There’s not only respect of the other, but also a meaningful glance of concern and compassion.
