Through 2023, I've been sketching and conceptualizing my designs for the human cast of BATDR. Giving shape to some ideas, testing new ones, you know the deal.

And December of last year, I wanted to make some slightly more elaborate drawings ("elaborate" in comparison to the previous sketches in this case), with some of these designs. To sort of solidify these ideas better.

The result turned out quite nice, despite a few things. (why are noses so complicated from a head-on perspective) Last month I decided to bring these drawings + 3 small doodles to color. To also solidify how they look in color.

Obviously, this isn't the entire DR cast. There are only 8 designs here, it's a little less than half of the entire cast, I still have to show a lot lol. These above are what I chose to draw in recent times. For the rest of the characters, it's a matter of 1. fleshing out the designs (e.g. Angus Newman, Kitty Thompson) or 2. I still have to think of a design for them (e.g. Muncie Dunn, Telly Wester). When I have a better vision for them, I'll do something similar to what I did here. Make some more elaborate drawings for them, color them digitally and post them here eventually.

I don't know if the text I put is too big or too small, so here are the characters in each image, left to right: -Jane Todd, Kay Lee. -Grace Conway -Bill Danton, Lance Derby -Sally Newt, Hudson Doyle and Carl (one could argue that Carl might not be a real in-universe person, but I still wanted to do a design for him) There are still some details that have yet to be really set in stone, but even so, what we have above is practically the main vision for these designs solidified, so to speak,which I'm happy with.

At first I was only going to color the first three images, but I liked the other 3 mini drawings that I made at the time so I decided to put them here too. Eventually I'll make some better drawings with them, so the next time I show other BATDR designs, I'll post them together. Maybe in the future, when all the designs are finalized, I will make a digital drawing with all the designs, in one place. I tried to do something similar in the past with my BATIM designs, so it would be interesting to do something like this again with the Dark Revival cast.

The Empty House, Part 3 of 3

I mentioned how Watson must have been at least a little annoyed that Holmes told Mrs. Hudson of his non-death before telling him, but Holmes also telling Scotland Yard first must have been even more shocking.

And speaking of Scotland Yard, it's nice to see Lestrade back in a story, which he evidently volunteered for, alongside some surprising words of praise towards him. I suppose it makes sense to bring him back if you're bringing back Sherlock Holmes as well.

Moran used a kid as bait for his hunts? No wonder he eventually became a criminal. Although, if he's as good a shot as Holmes says he is, then I guess those kids would have survived unharmed, physically at least.

Someone mentioned how Baker Street was set aflame by Moriarty's goons in The Final Problem in regards to how so much of the original rooms survived. I must therefore conclude that the goons did an absolutely pitiful job at arson. And that if Moriarty hadn't died at Reichenbach they would have been fired immediately.

And so Sherlock Holmes has come back to life, back to London, back to Baker Street, with Watson by his side ready to solve many more crimes. This really is just a "more adventures await" sort of ending, but I really like it.

Chapter 1/3: That Bastard

"Molly, would you pls take care of Rosy tonight too? I am already sorry for asking." John's voice sounded so little. Almost like a whisper.

"It's okay, John. Where are you going, may I ask?" Molly, John and Greg are at the hospital cafeteria where the conversation is taking place.

"I...thought...I should check on Mrs. Hudson. She might be...she might need anything.."

Greg stares at John with doubt building up inside him. Molly's frowning too. They know very well that everything is messed up between John and Sherlock. And of course John has a mountain of negative feelings for Sherlock. He's got reasons though. But he is not him recently. He's not stable. They couldn't recognise this John who has almost killed Sherlock. And they're not even sure if it's "almost" anyway, as the doctor has given 72 hours to conclude on anything. Greg's head is hurting badly. The migraine bitch is coming back. He needs to leave now. Anderson is continuously giving him every small update about that shitface Culverton Smith.

He turns to John, "You sure? She's not doing well, completely in shock, but she's the strongest one among us. I think you should have a bit of rest tonight, John. And honestly we're not done yet. We'll have to discuss it again tomorrow."

John looks up at Greg. He looked so tiny, like the tiniest creature in this world. Molly was thinking that just within a few hours John was looking so old. Like his whole face seemed to have shrunk like a dried peach. She tried to recall a younger John's face. A face that used to light up the whole room and Sherlock's world.

"It's just all part of my job, you know, John, I understand." Greg keeps his hand on John's left shoulder, "I really do."

" Do you think he'll...." John can't complete the sentence.

"Oh come on! We all know that bastard! He's gonna be fine as fuck!" Greg tries to laugh a bit. By every hour he's getting more convinced that Sherlock's not going to survive this time. He doesn't even want to think about it right now.

"It's okay, John. If you want to go you better leave now. It's going to rain i guess. I'll pick up Rosy and don't you worry about that darling. She'll be alright." Molly's genuinely glad. She loves Rosy. John softly smiles at her. He's looking more tired every second.

"See you tomorrow, John." Greg waves a little.

"'night".

John quietly leaves.

Day 7

Free-day (Out of order and late) Alenoah as Sherlock/Moriarty.

I like it when two characters play mind games and scheming against or with each other.

I didn`t plan to create an AU, but – my rant and bits of literature/character analysis (The Vision). Also, draw concept sketch.

Noah (Detective Sherlock Holmes). I mean, they're both geniuses, introverts who don't care about social opinion and some versions depicted him as being good with dogs. In Victorian England, I totally see Noah opening a detective agency, because you either go working on a plant or you might use your geniuses’ intelligence to solve crimes, like game puzzles, and make monies to pay bills and buy new books because in 1800 many books were expensive and produced in small quantities.

Plus! I might look at this too far, but I think the Sherlock and Watson analogy was implemented in London episode when they strip team Chris just to Noah and Owen for investigation.

Owen (Dr. Watson). Basically in the original books, Watson plays the role of the guy, your typical visual novel MC, well narrator, who has character, but his whole purpose is just to be a witness to detectives doing, asking questions for the audience. This leads to usually representing Watson as either annoyed with Sherlock's antics or (usually in kids' media) naïve but with good intentions because of this simplification, to show his kindhearted nature in cartoons and caricatures he is portrayed as chubby, which is what we need! But all of them did service in the Anglo-Afghan War, even Disney version mentioned it. (Also if you want to do Nowen version of Jhonlock I don`t mind, sure go for it)

Alejandro (professor Moriarty). Do I really need to explain? Both archvillains in their stories. Professor, respected in society for his talent and achievements, wealthy, but behind all of that façade he`s "Napoleon of crime". He doesn’t usually do crimes himself but rather, schemes, orchestrates the events, or provides the plans that will lead to a successful crime, like paying money to a court so that someone can be released from prison.

Heather (Irene Adler). OK, in the original books (all books written not by Arthur Conan Doyle are basically fanfics) her character and Sherlock don`t date (But if you like, it`s fine). She was more like “I know what you are” towards him.  I want to base it more on Warner Bros Sherlock where Irene works with Moriarty, but they also try to get rid of each other. She is also famous for blackmailing royals, If it isn`t most Heather thing I don`t know what is.

Eva (Mrs. Hudson). The landlady. I think it would be funny, she yelling at them to pay their bills in time.

The Six Napoleons, Part 1 of 3

I like the evolution of Lestrade's relationship with the boys from being generally professional in the beginning to him just now hanging out some nights. And it's not all talk of crime, they make pleasant conversation too.

The fact "Hooliganism" is capitalized makes it seem like an official term for identifying crimes. Probably alongside "Shenaniganery" and "Rapscallionship" as well.

I enjoy it whenever Watson gets to shine a little, showing his medical expertise and such, and not be mere muscle nor stooge for whatever is going on.

This line suggests it wasn't the mere sinking of the parsley that aroused Holmes' notice, but the specific depth that the parsley sunk, which makes me way more intrigued as to what the case was about.

I don't remember the significance of this photograph, whether it represents the murderer or some other character. Though I will say the fact the guy is described twice like an ape is odd and hopefully there's nothing more to that.

For what I'm sure is a minor character who will never appear again, I'm glad to see Horace Harker get this characterization of a journalist who has these incredible things happen to him, but which also causes him so much stress he can't write about it. It's a real monkey's paw situation.

So, I was thinking about different fandoms and the fics that I love. What makes a good, satisfying fan fic? I realize it has 100% to do with the canon.

Take BBC Sherlock. I struggle so much with AUs where their beginnings are different. Sherlock is an astronaut, assigned to work with scientist John. (This is an example, not a dig at any specific fic). I can't. I can't. I realize BBC Sherlock is also an AU from Doyle, but BBC Sherlock and John are so fucking tied to "A Study In Pink" and John handing his phone to Sherlock that everything else seems false. Fun premise, but not the Sherlock and John I know.

A satisfying Johnlock fan fic needs to change the ending of the BBC canon. To think of these two men, who love each other so much, just continuing their parallel existences, never becoming anything more than crime-fighting buds, is just. . . it doesn't fit. It doesn't fit the show. It doesn't fit the characters Moffit and Gatiss created, even if they decided to not make it happen (as a special 'fuck you' to their fans). It's heartbreaking.

My favorite fics are fixits -- many of them deal with the aftermath of Euros and Mary, or some do "canon intercepts" and deal with Seasons 3 and 4 differently. Still, anything but John and Sherlock raising Rosie together as partners/lovers/husbands in 221B with Mrs. Hudson downstairs feels like a lie. (Some canon intercepts write out Rosie completely.)

If I had to write sequels to BBC canon, I'd pick "Drawn to Stars" by @totallysilvergirl or "Never Turn Your Back on the Sea” by @discordantwords . There's a thousand other ones, but those ring the most true to me.

"Heartstopper" fics don't have a lot of room to mess with the ending. Anything other than Charlie and Nick happily growing old together is so far out of canon and out of character that it doesn't even seem like it's worth exploring. There are a handful of ones that have one character or the other dying, but mostly, we understand right away that Charlie and Nick are endgame. We are 100% aligned with canon and creator on this.

Anything that isn't true to this ending rings as false as anything that isn't true to Sherlock's beginning. Fun to read, but not our characters.

With Nick and Charlie being so young in canon, their beginnings are so much malleable. Sherlock and John are tied to that lab. Nick and Charlie? not so much. They meet in grammar school. They meet in University. They meet after a hot hookup at a club in their 20s. They meet after broken marriages to Imogen and Ben. They meet during Nick's rugby career or as fellow teachers. They meet at gyms, at animal rescues, at psychiatric hospitals. They are single parents, University professors, rock star drummers, hot shot authors and academics. Their beginning isn't fixed. But the end always is.

I have so many favorites but I just re-read "Lavender Fields" and I think it's a perfect Nick and Charlie meeting up in their 30s fics. There's a ton of University fics too.

I haven't read nearly as many fics from other fandoms, so I don't know their quirks. I'm finding that fandoms that don't have a m/m pairing are hard to find a lot of fics for. (That's a whole 'nother post). But other m/m fandoms seem to have canon-compliant extra scenes. (Wanna see Achilles and Patroclus get freaky in a tent somewhere? Here ya go. That being said, there's one about Achilles waiting for Patroclus in the Underworld that breaks. my. damn. heart.)

Anyways, I need to do a serious look-through of other fandoms to see how this plays out.
