Through 2023, I've been sketching and conceptualizing my designs for the human cast of BATDR. Giving shape to some ideas, testing new ones, you know the deal.

And December of last year, I wanted to make some slightly more elaborate drawings ("elaborate" in comparison to the previous sketches in this case), with some of these designs. To sort of solidify these ideas better.

The result turned out quite nice, despite a few things. (why are noses so complicated from a head-on perspective) Last month I decided to bring these drawings + 3 small doodles to color. To also solidify how they look in color.

Obviously, this isn't the entire DR cast. There are only 8 designs here, it's a little less than half of the entire cast, I still have to show a lot lol. These above are what I chose to draw in recent times. For the rest of the characters, it's a matter of 1. fleshing out the designs (e.g. Angus Newman, Kitty Thompson) or 2. I still have to think of a design for them (e.g. Muncie Dunn, Telly Wester). When I have a better vision for them, I'll do something similar to what I did here. Make some more elaborate drawings for them, color them digitally and post them here eventually.

I don't know if the text I put is too big or too small, so here are the characters in each image, left to right: -Jane Todd, Kay Lee. -Grace Conway -Bill Danton, Lance Derby -Sally Newt, Hudson Doyle and Carl (one could argue that Carl might not be a real in-universe person, but I still wanted to do a design for him) There are still some details that have yet to be really set in stone, but even so, what we have above is practically the main vision for these designs solidified, so to speak,which I'm happy with.

At first I was only going to color the first three images, but I liked the other 3 mini drawings that I made at the time so I decided to put them here too. Eventually I'll make some better drawings with them, so the next time I show other BATDR designs, I'll post them together. Maybe in the future, when all the designs are finalized, I will make a digital drawing with all the designs, in one place. I tried to do something similar in the past with my BATIM designs, so it would be interesting to do something like this again with the Dark Revival cast.

Percy praying to his human mother because she is the only one he truly believes in even after realizing great forces exist in the world....... something about Sally Jackson representing humanity, and Percy, despite being offered greatness and divinity and having all the cool powers and glory to his name, choosing to stay mortal– not only that, he takes pride in his humanness, in the fact that he is his mother's son....... yeah.

While we’re on the subject of names, is there an explanation for how traditional nicknames came about that are seemingly unrelated to, or have little in common with, the original name?

ie- John/Jack, Richard/Dick, Henry/Harry/Hank, Charles/Chuck, Margaret/Peggy/Daisy, Sarah/Sally, Mary/Molly, Anne/Nan, etc

I am actually over a week into researching a huge follow-up post (probably more than one if I’m being honest) about the history of nickname usage, so I will be going into this in much, much more detail at a hopefully not-so-later date - if I have not lost my mind. (Two days ago I spent three hours chasing down a source lead that turned out to be a typographical error from 1727 that was then quoted in source after source for the next 150 years.)

As a preview though, here’s some info about the names you mentioned:

The origins of a good portion of common English nicknames come down to the simple fact that people really, really like rhyming things. Will 🠞Bill, Rob🠞Bob, Rick🠞Dick, Meg🠞Peg.

It may seem like a weird reason, but how many of you have known an Anna/Hannah-Banana? I exclusively refer to my Mom’s cat as Toes even though her name is Moe (Moesie-Toesies 🠞 Toesies 🠞 Toes).

Jack likely evolved from the use of the Middle English diminutive suffix “-chen” - pronounced (and often spelled) “-kyn” or “kin”. The use of -chen as a diminutive suffix still endures in modern German - as in “liebchen” = sweetheart (lieb “love” + -chen).

John (Jan) 🠞 Jankin 🠞 Jackin 🠞 Jack.

Hank was also originally a nickname for John from the same source. I and J were not distinct letters in English until the 17th Century. “Iankin” would have been nearly indistinguishable in pronunciation from “Hankin” due to H-dropping. It’s believed to have switched over to being a nickname for Henry in early Colonial America due to the English being exposed to the Dutch nickname for Henrik - “Henk”.

Harry is thought to be a remnant of how Henry was pronounced up until the early modern era. The name was introduced to England during the Norman conquest as the French Henri (On-REE). The already muted nasal n was dropped in the English pronunciation. With a lack of standardized spelling, the two names were used interchangeably in records throughout the middle ages. So all the early English King Henrys would have written their name Henry and pronounced it Harry.

Sally and Molly likely developed simply because little kids can’t say R’s or L’s. Mary 🠞 Mawy 🠞 Molly. Sary 🠞 Sawy 🠞 Sally.

Daisy became a nickname for Margaret because in French garden daisies are called marguerites.

Nan for Anne is an example of a very cool linguistic process called rebracketing, where two words that are often said/written together transfer letters/morphemes over time. The English use of “an” instead of “a” before words beginning with vowels is a common cause of rebracketing. For example: the Middle English “an eute” became “a newt”, and “a napron” became “an apron”. In the case of nicknames the use of the archaic possessive “mine” is often the culprit. “Mine Anne” over time became “My Nan” as “mine” fell out of use. Ned and Nell have the same origin.

Oddly enough the word “nickname” is itself a result of rebracketing, from the Middle English “an eke (meaning additional) name”.

I realized earlier this week that my cat (Toe’s sister) also has a rebracketing nickname. Her name is Mina, but I call her Nom Nom - formed by me being very annoying and saying her name a bunch of time in a row - miNAMiNAMiNAM.

Chuck is a very modern (20th century) nickname which I’ll have to get back to you on as I started my research in the 16th century and am only up to the 1810s so far lol.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre Game lore Deep Dive!

I wanted to do a lore deep dive since I've been hyperfixated on this game for the past fortnight, so here we are. Also I have an Evil Dead the Game one coming out soon, but that's for later. Before we start, please note this game is a prequel to the first film, so Sally and her friends haven't met the Slaughter Family yet.

Essentially the main story of TCM (the Game) is that these group of friends go searching for Maria Flores, Ana's sister who has been missing for the past month. Since other crimes are happening throughout Texas, Maria's disappearance gets drowned out and the police are unable to help. Ana gets her close friends together, this being (so far) Connie Taylor, Leland McKinney, Sonny Williams and Julie Crawford, and she tries to find out what happened.

In their search, the group come across the Slaughter Family, and all of them are kidnapped and either held captive in the family house, the slaughterhouse, the gas station or Nancy's house. Through gameplay the player chooses their fates, and so far there is no canonical ending so it's unknown who exactly was kidnapped, where they were kept or who, if any, survived. (Update: There is now a canonical fate for each character, check the end.) During an opening cutscene, one of the 5 victims tries to escape but gets killed by Leatherface before everybody else even wakes up.

In gameplay only 3 members of the Slaughter Family actually appear, though Leatherface is mandatory and canonically is one of the killers hunting these group of friends. (Update: Leatherface is no longer mandatory to start a game, but considering the game was made with the intent of him being mandatory I'm still saying he's canonically one of the killers, it just makes sense.)

So what exactly happened to Maria? Well we have the prequel game "Petals" to answer us. Essentially, Maria had gone on a roadtrip where she stopped to take photos of random things that interested her, and every so often sent a postcard to her family to let them know she was safe. At some point, a man began to follow her around and she felt like he was stalking her every move even if she couldn't see him. In Newt, Muerto County, Texas, Maria's car broke down and she decided to kill time by taking photos. What she did not know was that Johnny was following her at this point, being the guy who had been stalking her. As she takes pictures, he follows her around before unlocking the front gate to the family house, leading to Maria entering out of curiosity. As Maria took her last photo, Johnny finally revealed himself and stole her camera. This caused Maria to realise who he was and flee towards the closest house, begging for help. Unfortunately for Maria, this was the home of the Slaughter Family and Sissy answered the door, and she and Johnny held Maria down as Leatherface killed the poor girl. After this, her body was taken to Black Nancy's house, where it's possible her friends found her (if that is where they spawned.) Since she had told her family about the man stalking her, and she'd stopped sending letters, her sister instantly became worried and began to search for answers, becoming paranoid after her car was found abandoned.

Whilst this is the main story, there are other behind the scenes lore related to the characters, mainly the killers. Since Leatherface, Cook and Hitchhiker are already well known I'll only talk about the new characters.

First, Sissy. Sissy is one of the original characters introduced for this game, however she was actually a scrapped concept from the original film that Kim Henkel removed, likely because the film was too crowded. (It should also be noted there is a member of the family named Sissy in the 2013 film.) Sissy is sister to the Cook, Hitchhiker and Leatherface, however at some point during her adolescence she ran away from home, and went around the country joining various different cults, most notably joining the Manson Cult where she learned the songs she sings in game. It's implied she wasn't always insane but became so after joining the Manson’s. During her time in the Manson Cult, she learnt how to make poisons from flowers and she used this on her victims as her MO. It's implied she was part of the cult during the murder of Sharon Tate, meaning she’s been in the cult for at least 4 years. Only recently she returned home to the Slaughter Family, where she quickly became a favourite of grandpa and a useful member of the team due to her innocent and sweet appearance. Sissy is seemingly the most beloved member of the family (aside from Grandpa) as Leatherface, Hitchhiker and Grandpa are on good terms with her, or at least as good as you’re getting in this family, with only Johnny and Nancy seeming to dislike her. As to why she isn't in the films, it's likely after the game she left the family again to either go off on her own or to join a new cult.

Next is Johnny, being based on real life serial killers who used their good looks to attract victims, especially women. Like Sissy, he was a scrapped concept that was reused for the game. He is not directly related to the Slaughter Family, as he is actually adopted and is only cousins to the main siblings. As a toddler, Johnny's real mother was murdered by Black Nancy, who for whatever reason, took Johnny in and raised him as her own, lying to him and saying she was his Aunt. Growing up he became sadistic and enjoyed using his charms and handsome face to attract his victims and kill them. Despite being good at killing, and excellent at drawing prey in, he is rather disliked by most of the family who find him too hard to control. Whilst the family are murderers, Johnny is a serial killer and causes trouble for the family by murdering girls all the time and drawing attention to them as reflected by the voice lines said in game. He got a scar on his left shoulder, from the "Pflugerville Incident" where he'd stabbed a girl to death, but her roommates woke up and fought back. Opposite to Sissy, majority of the family doesn't like Johnny, as Sissy, Hitchhiker, Cook and Leatherface all seem annoyed by him. Johnny is the one who inadvertantly starts the game, as it is he who stalks and eventually kills Maria, leading to Ana and her friends going after them, and this is one of the reasons the other family members are so mad at him, especially Cook who states he doesn't take pleasure in killing like the others do. It's likely he isn't in the films because he wasn't with the family, but rather with Nancy or off on his own.

Black Nancy is a black widow killer, using her meek and innocent apperance to draw in men, who she eventually married before they "mysteriously" disappeared. Unlike the other characters with an outside life, Nancy has a bad reputation giving her the nickname "Black Nancy" although nobody can prove she killed her husbands. In her backstory it's stated she didn't really kill her husbands for money, but rather because they couldn't fill the void in her heart, yet raising Johnny did. It's unknown what relation she has to the main family, but seeing as Johnny is considered a cousin to Sissy, Hitchhiker and Leatherface, it's likely she is their Aunt making her the sister to whoever their parents are (which might be Grandpa, idk lore's very weird.) Since she isn't part of their direct family, she isn't as close to the rest of them, however she is very much obsessive over her "son" in an odd juxtaposition as she is very motherly to Johnny, whilst also being sadistic and cannibalistic. It's likely she keeps Maria's body in her house to protect Johnny specifically. Since she isn't as close to the family and doesn't live with them, it's likely she didn't appear in the films because she was doing her own thing away from the rest of the family. She also seems to have a connection to Cook, but nothing has been confirmed. Some think she might be his partner, but considering she's a black widow, it would be weird. That and he could be her nephew so I'd hold off on shipping them.

Ana Flores is the unofficial protagonist of the game, being the one who gets all her friends together to go searching for her missing sister when the police were unable to do anything. Despite being a regular girl, she has the best endurance and takes hits easier, likely being due to her willpower. She is so determined to find her sister she literally tanks hits from a chainsaw, just to discover the truth. Likely following where her sisters car was found, she comes across the Slaughter Family along with 3 of her close friends, and they end up being kidnapped and hunted down in one of the four maps. It's unknown whether Ana or any of her friends survive, but considering the original film shows no signs the family were close to being caught, it's possible the victims were all killed, or Ana was unable to convince the cops of anything. It should be noted that Ana’s character is referred to as “The Final Girl” implying she might’ve survived. (Update: She doesn’t survive, check the end of this post.)

Finally there is Danny Gaines, Maria's boyfriend who went looking for her. He didn't go with Ana or her friends, he instead went off on his own and came to Black Nancy's house to find answers. Nancy knew what happened with Maria, and to protect her son she decided to try and kill Danny, which might've led to him being taken to the Family House which is right next to Nancy's house, being kidnapped alongside the others. Since his fate is not mentioned alongside the other survivors, it seems to be canon that he was killed by Nancy.

Some other small tidbits is that the Hitchhiker's camera is actually stolen from Maria, and is the same one he uses in the first TCM film. Majority if not all of the radio broadcasts are related to the Slaughter Family, such as a person getting poisoned by Sissy, the "Terror of 1-40", and Johnny's Pflugerville murder case.

Regarding canonicity, this game works with the original writers and actors, and nothing contradicts anything in the original 2 films, so I consider this canon to the franchise, as does the creators. If a new character comes out that is somebody like Sally Hardesty, that definitely won't be canon, but it is an online asymmetrical game, so not everything will be 100% canon.

These are really fun, but after Evil Dead the Game I don't think I'll do another since Friday the 13th didn't really have lore and Dead by Daylight has way too much lore for me to cover. *SECOND UPDATE!! The Devs have revealed the canon fates of each character. Unfortunately every survivor dies in the game. First to die is Leland, then Sonny, Connie and Ana. Julie does escape the house but bleeds out and dies on the road. Personally IMO I think it’s odd they characterised Ana as the “Final Girl” just to have her not only die but not even be the last one standing? Like just say Julie is the final girl or make Ana the one who dies on the road… Since Danny is also dead, this means so far, nobody has canonically survived the Slaughter Family. I should mention, the opening cutscene where a victim is killed by Leatherface appears to canonically be Leland, since he's the first to die.

Maze runner chapter thirteen

“Alice.

Barry.

Walt.

Edgar.

Samantha.” Janson called out more names.

“I wanna know what's through that door.” Thomas whispered to you.

“Aaron.”

“Now, we've been over this. You said they were covered up, so you don't know what you saw.” Newt replied

“Dennis.”

“It could've been anything under there.”

“I know exactly what I saw. They were bodies.” Thomas explained again.

“Sally.”

“Aris said they bring in a new batch every night.”

“Who the hell is Aris?” Minho asked.

“Henry.

Tim.”

Thomas pointed to a boy sitting alone at a table not to far away. You all turn to look at him.

“Well, I'm sold.” Minho joked.

“And last but not least, David. Thank you for your attention. Enjoy the rest of your evening.” Janson lowered his clipboard as the chosen teens walked over to him. Newt leaned past you to speak,

“Okay, until we know anything for certain,

we should just keep our heads down and try not to draw any attention to ourselves, all right?”

Thomas nods, his eyes firmly on the doors. He got up and rushed forward.

“What is he doing?” You ask.

“I think he's drawing attention to himself.” Frypan stated the obvious and you all slowly got up.

“Hang on. You weren't called.” The guard stopped Thomas from walking out.

“I know, I'm just gonna be a second.” Thomas said, trying once more to get through the doors.

“This is a restricted area, kid.” The guard told him.

“I just wanna see my friend. Can you let me through?”

“Get your ass back in that chair.” The guard poked his finger on Thomas's chest.

Thomas turned and took a few steps before twisting quickly and rushing the guard. There is a tangle of limbs and Thomas is pushed back into you.

“Control your friend!” the guard shouted angrily. Janson broke through the guards.

“What's happening here? Thomas?I thought we could trust each other. You know we're all on the same team here.” He stopped shouting but his tone was anything but nice.

“Are we?” Thomas heaved his words through heavy breaths.

“Get them to their bunks.” The older man demanded.

“What the hell was that about?” you growled once the bunk door was shut and locked.

“You didn't really think they were just gonna let you through?” Newt folded his arms.

“Nah, of course I didn't.” Thomas pulled out the key card he had swiped, “I'm gonna find out what's on the other side of that door.” he said triumphantly.

“Right.”

“Newt, they're hiding something. Okay? These people are not who they say they are.”

“No, Thomas, you don't know that! The only thing that we do know is that they helped rescue us from WICKED. They gave us new clothes. They gave us food. They gave us a proper bed. Some of us haven't had that in a long time.” There was venom in Newt's next words, “Some of us a lot longer than others.”

The vent cover from under Thomas's bed flicked across the floor

“Hey, Thomas.” The Aris kid poked his head through, “You got it, didn't you?”

“Yeah. Let's go.” Thomas rushed forward.

“All right, look, maybe you guys are right. Maybe I'm just being paranoid but I got to find out for sure. Just cover for me. I'll be back as soon as I can.” He said before slipping through the grate. You watched him, then looked back at the others. Curiosity took over you and dove to the floor, crawling into the vents and following Thomas.

The three of you dropped down into the corridor and Thomas used the key card. Inside the room you were first faced with strange creatures in tanks.

“What the hell?”

“Are they Grievers?” You ask.

In the next part of the room kids were strung up in rows. All of them unconscious as a blue liquid is extracted from them. You feel Thomas rush past you to a girl.

“Teresa?” He uses back her hair,

“It's Rachel. They took her the first night. I told her it was going to be okay.” Aris informed you both.

“You sure this can't wait?” Janson’s voice echoed from the doorway. All three of you jumped and ran to hide. Two men walked through the room with one of them clicking on a screen that Janson stood in front of.

“She was very specific, sir. She wanted to speak with you personally.” The man said.

“As if I don't have enough to deal with.” Janson groaned.

You chance pearing round and you see Ava Paige spring onto the screen.

“Good evening, Doctor Paige. Lovely to see you again. Although I admit… I wasn't expecting to hear from you quite so soon.” There was that false niceness from Janson again.

“Change of plans, Janson. I'll be arriving a little sooner than expected. First thing tomorrow.” The blonde woman spoke. Your heart raced, not even two days ago you had stood over her dead body.

“We'll be delighted to have you. I think you'll be pleased with the progress we've made. As you can see, early results have been extremely promising. Whatever it is you've been doing to them in there, it's working.” He said.

“Not well enough. I just received board approval. I want all the remaining subjects sedated and prepped for harvest by the time I arrive.” you flick your eyes to Thomas who is looking at you, panic in his eyes.

“Doctor Paige, we are going as fast as we can. We are still running tests…”

“Try something faster. Until I can guarantee their security, this is the best plan.”

“Ma'am, security is my job. We're on twenty four hour lockdown here.” Janson tried to reassure her. “I am assuring you...the assets are secure.”

“Have you found the Right Arm?”

“Not yet. We tracked them as far as the mountains.” you could tell he was getting frustrated.

“ So they're still out there. And they've already hit two of our installations. They want these kids as badly as we do. And I cannot, I cannot afford another loss. Not now, when I am so close to a cure. If you are not up to the task, I will find someone who is.” Ava growled through the screen.

“That won't be necessary. Might I suggest we start with the most recent arrivals.”

“Those four are our best hope, Just get it done. Janson. I don't want them to feel any pain.”

“They won't feel a thing.” The screen went blank and the two men marched themselves out of the room.

The three of you all rush back to the vent and climb up.

“Thomas! Y/n!” Newt said as you rushed into the room.

“We gotta go.” You wanted as you helped Aris out from under the bed.

“We gotta go right now.” Thomas repeated your words as he grabbed a sheet from a bed and tied it around the bunk door.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Minho shouted.

“What do you mean, "We gotta go?" Newt asked.

“They're coming. Come on. We gotta go.” Thomas was panicking and rushing around.

“They're coming for us. Paige. She's still alive.” You say grabbing Newt's hand.

“What happened in there?” Frypan asked.

“Aris, what happened?” Winston grabbed him. You were trying to pull a bunk in front of the doors.

“Thomas, y/n, can you just calm down and talk to us.”

“She's still alive.” Thomas finally stood still.

“Who's she? Teresa?”

“Ava.”

“Ava?” Thomas started grabbing things again,

“Will you just turn around and talk to us?”

“It's WICKED! It's still WICKED. It's always been WICKED.” You bellow at them.

“What did you see?” Newt asked you, trying to hold on to your shoulders and stop you from rushing around. Thomas put a mattress against the door, covering the window.

“Come on, come on. We don't have time.” You say pushing the boys to the vents. You all emerge into a corridor that's lined with pipes all painted white. Thomas looked around himself.

“Okay, let's go.”

“You guys go ahead. There's something I gotta do.” Aris said.

“What are you talking about?” You ask him.

“Trust me, it's important. You guys wanna get outta here, right? With everyone? Just go.”

“I'll go with him.”

“Okay, Winston, go! Go!” Thomas agreed.

“You sure we can trust this kid?” Minho asks as you all run towards a door.

“You don't want to know where we'd be without him.”

As your turned the corner you all ran into a female doctor.

“What are you kids doing out?” As you scrambled for something to say the alarm lights began spinning. The doctor gasped as Minho grabbed her and spun her round.

“Take us to Teresa” Thomas demanded. The doctor didn't have much choice; she led you all back through the facility toward the medical bay.

“Freeze, stay where you are!” You hear the voice behind you. Minho wastes no time. He runs full pelt at the guard, using the flat of his shin to drive the guard into the wall and knocking him out. You were all impressed by his strength and quick thinking. He grabbed the guard's gun.

Finally in the medbay you pushed doctor Crawford down amongst the other doctors and Minho used bandages to bind their hands. Thomas finds Teresa on a bed behind a curtain. He gently wakes her up. She was confused but compliant.

“Thomas we gotta go now!” You call out. Thomas scans the room and grabs a stool he slams it against the window but it bounces off.

“Newt!” The blonde boy grabs another and they work together slamming at the same time and glass scatters around the room. Thomas jumps through the window and helps Teresa over, Newt was next and he grabbed you into his arm to bring you over the glass. Minho wasast to hop over, holding the gun pointed at the door.

You run like you've never run before until you reach another corridor. A grey door at the end. This was the one you had first come.in through and you knew freedom was close by. Thomas tried the key card in the door but it continued to flash red.

“Thomas!” Jason stood behind two.guards on their knees.

“Open this door, Janson!” Thomas demanded.

“You really don't want me to.” Janson said.

“Open the damn door!”

“Listen to me! I'm trying to save your life. The maze is one thing, but you kids wouldn't last one day, out in the Scorch. If the elements don't kill you, the Cranks will. Thomas, you have to believe me. I only want what's best for you.” You took the card from him and tried it again.

“Yeah, let me guess. WICKED is good?”

“You're not getting through that door, Thomas.” Janson growled.

In that exact moment the doors opened and you heard a familiar growl.

“Mai Mai!” You rush through the door and wrap yourself around the Tiger. Winston and Aris stood beside her.

“Hey, guys.” Aris smiled.

“You didn't think we'd leave her behind did you?” Winston laughed

“Come on!” You turn to see what Newt is shouting at and see the doors closing. Thomas was running as fast as he could.

“Thomas! Come on! Let's go!” The boys were all shouting together. You room a moment too. Look around yourself and see two backpacks. Quickly glancing in them you see a medpack and other equipment so you grab one and throw the other at Minho. Thomas slides through the door just as it was closing and you all sigh in relief. There isn't time to waste and you all run across the open room to the large doors. To your surprise it only needed a small twist of a red handle to open them.

Sand blew instantly making you all close your eyes for a moment. You felt a hand slide into yours and Newt pulled you along with him. Mai Mai by your side.
