Aha, there be NW going a bit flaily, in completely appropriate usage and reminiscent of Ford while being distinct rather than competing. “Manic” lols

Like that little ongoing joke about Sophie not running things like Nate speechwise. And that little speed up to the scene transition? I really like it.

Parker’s performance on the shooting range? She’s come so very far as a grifter. Eliot seeing the cop car and riffing? So has he. All highlighted by Breanna racing to catch up.

Even though we don’t know these gamblers, I love this extension of the Team’s “social network.” Back in the day we had Maggie, and the “Second Team,” but in this revival they’re more integrated into a worldwide web. I think they were all actors at the fake auction, hoping to see more characters, and some blasts from the past. Archie? Maggie? Sterling is 100% going to show up at some point, I figure a quick cameo at the end of the halfseason break. It’s a nice touch that this time the gamblers are indebted to Ford, keeps the memory alive while loosening up the playing field. (Also knew the woman at least was in on something with her slightly off line read “not again”) Subtle and effective foreshadow :D

I would like to hear more about that gorilla enclosure.

Well, no. Remember way back when, Hardison had set up web crawlers to find clients? Remember one episode ago when they picked up the job based on a TikTok post from a teenager to her friends? And they already knew this was in Harry’s backlog and that he’s seeking redemption. All in all, stupid line.

O. M. G. Parker and ELIOT know Klingon! And Beanna had a lovely comeback! And Eliot did his twitchy thing! They’re becoming a family it’s so cute :D

Okay they didn’t know, but why do I know? Didn’t he talk about it with his old boss and they were listening? Didn’t they do a background search on him? This feels shoddy and unnecessary, just there to have him going rogue without... actually... having gone rogue.

Breanna brilliant. Again harkens back, this time to Parker and whatever that duck thing was. Building her own brother/sister relationship with Eliot, which makes me miss the old Parker/Eliot. I think Parker grew up along the line and their dynamic changed a little, which is natural but makes me really want a good scene between them. Which itself is odd because the Klingon thing just happened and that was adorable, but maybe it didn’t hit how I wanted because it was at heart about something between Eliot/Hardison and Parker/Hardison rather than Eliot/Parker.

I will mention here that despite preferring the Eliot/Parker dynamic in fic, in canon I love Parker/Hardison and hooking up Eliot and Parker romantically would be very wrong. But platonically speaking, I do think they’re my favourite dynamic onscreen.

Re: Harry/Sophie scene... This feel unearned, is this the intended episode order? It must be, given the platform, but I was not aware that he was not in that raw “redemption” phase anymore such that he’d be ashamed enough to hide this? I don’t feel how this was his “Big Regret,” why this case carries the emotional weight. Yes, people died, but he wasn’t there or personally know anyone affected. People died from the opiates.

It’s hard not to compare with the original run, especially because there are so many callbacks, but this feels like a vague shadow of Nate, the first that comes to mind is his emotional conversation with Maggie about not getting the experimental treatment approved. And that was earned and fundamental and an actual admission of deep trauma. Maybe more an analog to Eliot’s reveal about Damien Moreau, since that wasn’t central to the show premise either, but that was POWERFUL. For reasons we all know why. I don’t know what this is. Which makes it feel cheap. Convo with Eliot lends legitimacy, but I don’t feel it, don’t feel that Harry’s depth is the same.

Probably because they haven’t shown us that he actually knew he was on the wrong side all along but was burying it. I don’t know if Eliot’s speech is harkening to that, but even if it is, not organic.

But hell if I don’t adore the reveal that Parker was there. Because a) she knows that about Eliot so she doesn’t even need to comment and Eliot doesn’t care she hears and b) adds some dynamic to the scene and c) speaks to the comfort in their roles during a con, even if they really haven’t done them in a while. Though we know Parker and Eliot do most of the travelling, is that seperate or together?

It’s been increasingly nagging me, but they’re going after Jason, when clearly they should be going after his wife? Or was she not involved then? I’m fuzzy on that? So instead they’re triggering a dude who was being manipulated, and at least atm it appears to be about catching him rather than using him to get to his wife, who is legit our expected kind of evil? I just feel bad for this guy. All kinds of confused with this episode.

The end was satisfying I guess, but also not? But also yes? I’m used to a hammer fall at the end, stamping the bow into the thing, but in this case the ending was initially funky because they didn’t get justice, just money and such. I do like that we get the intended result in a roundabout way but there was no flashback to the workman’s comp thing to show the real ending with a wink and nod.

I just didn’t get this episode, maybe on a second viewing without pausing it’ll go better.

For Whom The Bell Tolls Part 2 // Micah x Reader (NSFT)

FO: Sorry this took me so long to get done. Been a lot going on personally, and I haven't had a whole lot of motivation to write. Especially considering I wasn't much of a writer before this blog. lol But anyway, as promised, here is Part 2 to my recent Micah x Reader story. Once again, it's a bit long, so I apologize for that as well. ^-^;; This part IS NSFT/NSFW so please read at your own discretion and enjoy~! ^w^ Also, if you haven’t already read it, you can’t find Part 1 here. =========================== After having a quick chat with the saloon owner and exchanging payment, Micah had come to retrieve you and lead you up the stairs to the room the two of you had been given for the night. He fumbled a bit with the key before finally figuring out which way it went and getting the door open. You follow him int, your eyes widening at the sight before you. Your family home wasn't the most lavish place, so seeing a room like this was actually a whole new experience. Micah looked back at you with a raised brow. "Well. You comin' in?" "O-oh! S-sorry..." You stuttered a bit when you realized you were still just standing in the doorway. You quickly stepped in and shut the door behind you. Your surprise was quickly replaced with the butterflies now filling your stomach at the realization that you were actually about to spend the night in a private room with a man you had only just met not even twenty-four hours ago. Micah removed his hat and placed it on the vanity in the corner of the room before taking off his leather jacket and draping it over the chair. He turned to you with a tipsy expression as he pulled out a cigarette and a match. He lit it up and took a long drag, blowing out the smoke and smiling at you. "So uh... Still got n'hour or so til it gets dark. Anythin' y'wanna do b'fore bed~?" You seemed to be a bit startled a bit by his voice, quickly looking to him with a shy smile. "Oh um...well... What'dja have in mind...?" You suddenly felt you were going to regret asking that question. Especially seeing as you just took notice of the fact that there was only one bed.

He seemed to be thinking a moment before moving to sit on the bed. He placed the cigarette between his lips to hold there as he opened the nightstand drawer and began looking through it. Not much was inside though. Just a copy of the King James Bible, which Micah promptly tossed aside with a grumble, a couple of matchbooks, and a deck of cards. "Well...we could play a card game, but... Ain't much we can play just the two of us." He blew out some smoke as he sighed softly. He then looked up to you with a slight smirk. You felt your heart skip a beat when he looked at you. He was hinting at something. You knew he was. He wanted something that 'just the two' of you could do together. You bit your lip a bit as you shifted your weight from foot to foot nervously. "Well... Maybe there's somethin' we could play with'em..." "You any good at Poker~?" He chuckled a lowly as he stood and made his way to the small table in the room. He sat down on one side and removed the cigarette from his mouth, letting out more smoke as he placed the cards on the table. "Well uh...not really..." You replied nervously as you took the seat across from him. "I know the basics, but...not much else." "Poker it is then~!" He seemed quite excited about this, a gleam in his eye as he removed the cards from their casing and started shuffling them after replacing his cigarette between his lips. "Got a way ta make it more interestin' too~" "I-interesting...?" You had a feeling you knew where this was going, but you did your best to push the thought out of your mind. "Every round you win, I gotta take a piece a clothin' off, but..." He looked up at you with a devious grin. "Every round I win, you gotta take somethin' off~" You felt your face heat up with blush. He was serious, wasn't he? Were you really about to...? "O-okay, s-sure~" Your voice a bit shaky, but part of you was actually becoming curious about how this man might be in bed. This thought only caused you to blush more. "Well alright then~" He sniffed with a crooked grin. He dealt the cards and the game began. Just as you stated, you weren't all that good at Poker, but you played anyway. Sadly, after only a few hands, you now sat in only your undergarments while Micah was still mostly dressed. He had only lost his boots, neckerchief and gun belt. You could feel your whole body blushing at the situation, his eyes studying you as he laid his cards down. "Looks like I win, Sugarpie~" He had become more comfortable with you now, his nerves seeming to melt away as he even used a special pet name for you. "I-I sup-pose...y-ya do...Mr. B-Bell..." You wrap your arms around yourself to try and cover your mostly bare body. "S-so...what now..." You looked away from him, pretty certain you knew what was coming next. Micah didn't say anything. He just studied you as he stood and slowly walked around the table to where you sat. He looked down at you, the corners of his mouth curling into a grin as he leaned toward you a bit. "Well...s'been a little while since I kept some special comp'ny~" Special company'. You knew what that meant. "O-oh...w-well...um..." You bit your lip nervously, but before you could say another word you found yourself being scooped up from your seat and tossed onto the bed. Micah soon followed, climbing over you to loom there on his hands and knees as he stared down and chuckled lowly. Your heart was pounding in your chest as you looked up at him. His icy blue eyes seemed to be looking right into your soul. You soon found yourself reaching up to wrap your arms around his neck. What had gotten into you? Were you really about to do this? Before you had a chance to even think about saying anything to him though, you suddenly felt his lips against yours. Your eyes widen as his mustache lightly tickles your lip, but you were able to will yourself to relax and melt into the kiss. Your eyes slowly closed as you felt him deepen it, his tongue working it's way into your mouth to taste you. Micah lingered in the kiss for a moment or two before pulling back to catch his breath. He panted softly in time with your heavy ones before chuckling. "Seems like you want this just as much as I do, don'cha darlin'~?" "Well... You made it...hard ta...resist ya..." You huff a bit as you move one of your hands to cup his cheek. "I mean...ya seemed really...disappointed...n' lonely...when I was gonna leave b'fore..." Micah huffed a bit as he slightly furrowed his brows. "I ain't lonely. Don't need much'a anyone 'round." His expression softens once more as he smirks. "I just like havin' a bit a fun now and then~" He quickly grabs both of your hands and pins them by the wrists with one of his above your head before leaning down and placing soft kisses to your neck and collarbones, causing you to gasp a bit. You couldn't help but squirm beneath him at all the physical attention. You managed to bite back a few soft moans before speaking. "W-well..I wasn't p-plannin' on doin' this, but...s-since ya make s-such a comp-pellin' argument~" You moved a knee up to gently press into his crotch. You couldn't do much where he had your hands pinned. Micah quickly put a stop to this too though. He used his other hand to push your leg back down. "Ah-ah-ah~ Don't make me have ta tie ya up, Sugarpie~" His voice was low and smooth as he spoke, sending a shiver down your spine. "M'sure I could find somethin' in here to do so~" "Well...how else d'ya expect me ta please ya then~?" You ask, narrowing your gaze at him in an attempt to look seductive. He grew quiet for a moment, seeming to be lost in thought before a sinister grin came across his lips. He let go of your hands and got off of you, moving to sit on the edge of the bed now. He looked back to you, bringing a hand up to beckon you toward him before gesturing for you to move to the floor. "On your knees, Sweetheart~" His movements and demanding tone sent chills throughout your entire body, but you did as instructed so as not to anger him. Besides, he was making ever part of this night harder and harder to resist. Once settled on your knees between his, you look up at him with a pitiful face and questioned softly. "W-what n-now...M-Mister Bell~?" Micah seemed to beam at you referring to him as 'Mister Bell'. He grinned as he looked down at you, moving a his hands to undo his pants and pull himself out. He gave his member a few strokes before reaching out to lace his fingers through your hair and push your face closer. "I think you know just what t'do, Darlin'~" He chuckled lowly. Your face was hot with blush now as you swallowed hard and looked at the object of desire. He brought a hand up to gently replace his as you stroked him a few times, enticing some soft hums from him. You took a deep breath and closed your eyes, now leaning more forward to carefully take his tip into your mouth. You swirled your tongue around it for a moment before beginning to lightly suck, humming softly to yourself as you did so. Micah closed his eyes as well, leaning his head back and letting out a quiet, breathy moan. He tightened his grip on your hair as he pushed your head further, causing you to take more of him in. As the warmth of your mouth encased him more it caused his moans to become a bit louder, but not too loud as he preferred you to be making the noise rather than himself. You gasped a bit at the tugging of your hair, but oddly enough it only aroused you further. You could feel yourself growing hot all over now, but most especially in your loins. You pushed further to take even more of his length in, now bobbing your head as you sucked and hummed around him. You did your best to run your tongue over every inch of him, making sure to hit all the places that seemed to cause him more pleasure. Micah would only allow this to continue for a few more minutes before abruptly yanking you away by your hair. This drew a slight yelp of pain from you, but he only looked down and chuckled at the hot mess you had become. "Now for the real fun~" He spoke darkly, reaching down now with both hands to pull you to your feet and strip the last of your clothing away. He then pulled you into his lap, his manhood threatening to find its way into you. You panted heavily as you tried to catch your breath, but before you had much time to you found yourself completely nude and in his lap. Eye to eye now, your heart was pounding. His eyes were the most beautiful icy blue, and you felt as though you could stare into them forever. However, your touching moment was interrupted by the sudden presence of his member abruptly entering you. You let out a loud gasp as you clung to him, the pain of your first time being a bit more than you thought it would be. Lucky for you though, the pain didn't last long as it was washed away by the immense pleasure of his throbbing extension inside of you Micah moved his hands to your hips as you wrapped your arms around his neck and clung to him. "That's right~" He cooed in your ear. The next ten or fifteen minutes continued like this. Micah talking dirty to you as he fucked you, and you just melting further into a puddle of ecstasy in his lap. Soon enough the both of you were steadily approaching your climaxes, however you would cross that line first. You felt a tightness building up inside of you that you just wanted to give release. You had begun to move your hips along with him now, and it only took a few more thrusts before you were a moaning mess in his arms. Your orgasm was intense as your inner walls clamped around him, twitching and pulsing as you rode it out. Micah did his best to last a bit longer, but it was no use. His words were like velvet to your ears. You looked up to him with a warm smile. "Well...I...mostly definitely wouldn't mind doin' it again some time, Mister Bell~" "Good ta hear, Sweetheart~" He cooed softly. "Because I was hopin' ta take ya back with me~" "Take me...back..?" You gave him a curious look as you tilted your head slightly. "Never mind that now. Get'cha some sleep. We'll talk about it in the morning." He sighed softly as he relaxed, letting his eyes slowly close. However, he didn't seem to be asleep. Maybe just resting a bit? But not fully asleep. You, on the other hand, were much too tired to fight sleep at this point. You didn't let the curiosity linger too long before returning your head to his chest and closing your eyes. It was only a matter of minutes before you drifted off to sleep, Micah's hand having found its way to your hair and running through it soothingly. This would definitely be a night to remember.

final thoughts on games today:

Tl;dr: london is going to have Issues with a capital I, paris is fine and will be better w hanbin, boston were okay and them losing just solidifies how fucking scary and well-oiled nyxl is rather than boston being terrible. Titans, like usual, have no respect for their opponents and could be even scarier /if/ they wanted to be, valiant pops off sometimes but cant do it consistently, shock looks rusty and dallas needs to pocket decay even harder than they already are to win games.

london: i see a lot of potential in them, but until they gain confidence they’re c tier for me. They seem overcoached and lost when they aren’t unable to go through with their set plays, of which they way too many for each map. When they were able to play their game, they cycled their ults well, but were easily forced out of their comfort zone. Bernar tried his best to carry, but jmac looked lost and wasn’t able to bait nicodgh’s walls at all, that might be a problem w coordination w sanguinar for speedboost tho. babel wasn’t quick enough to get his walls out in time, though they were great when he did. Glister and highly tried their best, sanguinar seems to play very individualistically which gave london chances, but fdgod just outplayed him mostly. Once teams figure out how to play vs them they’re fucked unless the coaches move away from set plays and unless the team builds more confidence. This team is going to suffer with hero pools if they don’t fix something quick. London honestly and truly has a TON of potential, but not the coordination or confidence or coaching to utilize it.

paris: they’re gonna be scary as they get more coordinated! Can’t wait til they can run at full strength w better tanks. They made good adaptations and looked good doing it. Nicodgh’s walls were sick, nosmite looked great, fdgod is a fragger, xzi clicked heads and greyy and hyp did good too. Benbest i didnt watch. I really like what i see with this team, but we haven’t seen them at full strength so i dont feel like i have much to say about them. Definitely a dark horse for me. They should thrive with hero pools.

nyxl: nyxl looks as dominant as ever. They’re coordinated, smart, aware, turn impossible situations around, and quickly shut down every win condition boston had before they could even execute it. Though whoru’s mei is def the weak link for me (his walls kinda suck. I think theyre just giving him stage experience here tbh. His genji slaps tho), him and sbb/nenne are a scary duo, everything that can be said abt jjonak and anamo has been said already (They are the best. They are the best. They are the best.), and mano and hotba are both doing excellently. I dont feel that this is their optimal meta, but nyxl has showed a lot of willingness to adapt to their opponents and make swaps, which i like. I’m not worried for them in hero pools, though they might stumble a bit. They’re solidly in S tier for me now

boston: This is gonna be controversial (and take this w a grain of salt cuz im plat.) but boston played better than i expected cuz im a pessimist and was expecting them to get completely rolled, and they at least showed some signs of life. They’ve clearly scrimmed a lot of different comps and looked at least vaguely competent in them, which is more than dallas valiant and london can say. They tried to go for a lot of clutches which never rly worked. they tried to adapt, but nyxl outmatched them and kinda drove them away. Axxiom and fusions were coordinated and i liked their dive, their double shield not so much. boston dps were holding their own, swimmer and myunbong were too, there’s not rly a carry on this team. axxiom i think is being slept on tho. They could definitely kite better and coordinate more, and make faster/smarter swaps, but they at least looked pretty synergized. They were clearly outmatched but they def looked better throughout the whole series than london did vs nyxl after the first 2 maps. Boston seems like a B- tier team to me, but they could be better and i do want to see them play more before im certain abt this. I’d call this a quality loss despite the scoreline

vancouver: Titans clearly didn’t prep much for this match and didn’t respect valiant as much as they should have. There’s no weak points on this team, just that all of them went for clutches they shouldn’t have and got punished for it bc they assumed valiant would be weaker than they were. Titans hate being methodical but are great when they are. When they subbed stitch in, they went for more dumb plays it seemed like, so i bet sms is the one keeping them chill. Fissure’s playing bumper style (taking space and dying for it) but quieter, which I like, bc it means they can pocket haksal harder and let twilight go for more plays. Good adaptations, great plays, great synergy, once titans got their feet under them and downloaded valiant it was over. Their dive was soooo clean. Nothing to be said about this roster that hasnt been said already (theyre the best). This is classic titans and im glad to see losing bumper hasnt completely stopped them from doing dumb shit, cuz even if it hurts me to watch its fun. They should be absolutely fine with hero pools, S tier.

valiant: Valiant only have one comp and theyre Very good at it, especially in the mirror, but theyre having trouble adapting to titans. They have very high highs and very low lows, they also try to clutch sometimes and fuck up. When the team pops off theyre sick, when they dont they… dont. Gig is a madlad. I do like that they prepped for the titan’s bap strat on lijiang and shut it down entirely, that was very good coaching, but they weren’t able to adapt to non-mirror matches after that. They might get fucked by hero pools bc they didn’t show anything successfully other than rein/dva variations, but we’ll see. I'm finding them fun to watch and I'm interested to see if they can consistently maintain their peak play. B tier, i think their weaknesses are more exploitable than boston’s but that boston would lose to them. Id compare them to hunters last year but if hunters played meta

shock: I didnt watch this match super close tbh. Shock looks strong as usual, but they stumbled far too much for my liking when they let doha and decay get value but otherwise incredibly dominant. Architect’s ana got sooooo much value as the series went on, beautiful sleeps beautiful nades beautiful nanos etc *chefs kiss.* i dont think shock prepped super hard for them, and they rly couldve adapted better on horizon and won that map, but it was overall dominant. They seemed pretty rusty honestly but theyre still good, but they should be pissed they got fullheld on horizon. I’m not going to draw any conclusions from this game when it comes to shock bc its one game and its their first game back. S tier, they’ll be fine with hero pools.

Dallas: Dallas looked way better than yesterday, when decay and doha were unleashed and it was less about taking space they were monsters. Tank play was better but not great, glad theyre not making note play rein anymore. Decay is a god and doha played around him really well and his walls were sick. When decay couldn’t play mccree and couldnt get support, there was nothing dallas could do. Gamsu… seemed a bit tilted and used ults he shouldnt have. There were also communication issues, it didnt seem like trill called some of his shatters which meant the team couldnt follow up. They weren’t able to adapt that well without set strats, and other teams will use that to their advantage. Once a team figures out how to shut down doha and decay the game is over. C tier, will struggle in hero pools

right now rankings for me go titans, nyxl shock in S tier, glads in A tier, toronto, paris, valiant, boston in B tier, dallas, london in C tier

To sum up, I feel like I am getting a deeper bond with Flint and Joey. They seem to be willing to talk with me most often. So, even if we do go to tribal I am safe for the most part. I just feel like I am liked in the tribe. Also, I am the one putting in the most work for the tribe, so I have that going for me. I just feel safe because of the work I have put in, but I don't want to give up just yet. If I can avoid tribal, then I will. According to both Joey and Flint, Suzy and Charlie have been very inactive. Therefore, it will be them on the chopping block come time for tribal. Joey thinks Charlie is more inactive whereas Flint thinks Suzy is more inactive. It'll just come down to what Cassie and I feel in the end. Doesn't hurt us either way since I think they are the weakest links on our tribe, especially Charlie. I don't think she put in enough effort last immunity challenge. Plus, she was totally inactive for this challenge that she auto-lost. Cassie missed this challenge too, but she at least did really well last challenge. If we go to tribal, I think I would vote for Charlie in the end since they are the person I feel least closest to. Whether I tell this to anyone on my tribe is a different matter entirely. Though they all know I have an advantage. I think I won't be seen as a threat until later on in the game. I first was talking to Brianna, and she mentioned the only people she didnt wanna vote was me, Apollo, and Bradley. So, naturally, when presented with a majority of the tribe, I suggest an alliance! Ofc she agrees hehe, so now thats in the works.

On my tribe, the most likable people and those I get along with/vibe the most with is Apollo and Zest. I approach them both and plant that seed, another alliance of just us three forms. Im SO excited to be working with them, we bounce off each other really well and I truly think we can go to the end together.

{things that helped me as a c0mputer science major}

Hi! So I wanted to make a post sharing some of the stuff that helped me improve at computer science but some of this advice can be applied to any subject you're studying. Hopefully, these tips will help you if you're beginning your journey in CS at University/College.

*I'm still learning and I'm nowhere near perfect so there may be some things in here that you disagree with but that's okay because everyone has different learning styles. A lot of this advice stems from personal experience so I don't expect these tips to work for everyone. With that being said, feel free to reblog this post with your own tips :)*

"How do I even know if I want to do CS at University?"

Well, Comp-Sci is obviously not everyone's cup of tea but chances are if you are curious to learn more about the subject (either as a hobby or career) it's a good idea to take a couple of intro/beginner courses to see how you feel about it before you major in it. It may be discouraging to hear some of your peers changing their majors from Computer Science saying that it's either "too boring" or "too hard". Most likely they either majored in CS because of only the pay or because they thought it would be easier than it turned out to be. But have no fear! As long as you're passionate about learning this totally awesome subject and are persistent through the challenging areas, you'll do great!

*note: there is nothing wrong with changing your major if you find something that you love more and would rather dedicate more time to. Just don't feel like you have to change your major if you're not confident that you will be successful as a computer scientist due to your skill level because you will get better. I promise.*

1. [stay consistent when learning programming languages]

Imagine you want to learn a foreign language like French, Arabic, or Japanese. Do you pick up a book and read it once or twice a week and expect to be fluent in a couple of months? Of course not! You need to be consistent and set aside at least an hour every day to sit down and learn/practice your language of choice. The same applies to programming languages. You have to dedicate enough time outside of class to really develop your coding skills but make sure you leave enough time for your hobbies and to relax because you don't want to burn out. Consistency is the key. Remember, if you don't use it you lose it.

2. [ask a lot of questions in class!]

You won't believe how many times students have a question during a lecture but don't ask it, instead they tell themselves that they'll "google it when I get home." But the reality is that most of the time they'll be too tired or forget to look up their question on the web. Even if they remember, the answers they get on the web won't always fit their question. You may be doing this too often but are unaware of it. It's understandable if you have anxiety from speaking in the presence of a crowd or are too afraid that your question is too basic. Please don't feel this way! Most of the students in your class are in the same position as you, some are probably even more confused. When you ask your question in class you not only help yourself understand the concept better but you also allow the professor to explain the topic further which benefits the whole class.

*note: not all professors allow for questions in the middle of a lecture so take advantage of office hours to ask them questions you wrote in your notes.*

3. [make connections with your professors]

The reason why we're in college is to find something we love and make a career out of it, right? Well logically, one of the main steps of getting a career is to make connections with your professors! Businesses and organizations work with universities all the time; whether it's for on-campus events, internships for undergrads, or scholarships. Your professors know about these opportunities probably more than anyone else because they have to sit in meetings discussing them for hours and is why you should talk to them if you're interested in any of this stuff. Like I said before, take advantage of their office hours. Let them know you want to volunteer at events, apply for any internships, or apply for merit-based scholarships. Show them that you want to do more than just be a student and that you're ready to do more work for an impressive resume. I wouldn't have been able to get a fraction of the opportunities I did if it weren't for my professor's emailing me about them or writing letters of recommendation for me (which happened because I volunteered myself to work on projects even if it meant that sacrificing other responsibilities sometimes). In short: put yourself out there and get noticed.

4. [learn how to use online resources]

There's no avoiding staying up trying to work on a project that's completely boggling your mind. If you feel like you won't get it to work no matter what you do, don't worry because the internet is your best friend. It's no surprise the number of resources available on the internet is almost endless but what might surprise you is the number of solutions to the specific question you have. Yup, there are people out there struggling with the same problem as you and plenty of people offering different solutions. It's very important to remember that you shouldn't blindly copy/paste their solutions into your code if you don't how it works. You first need to identify what you did wrong and what their solution did right. This allows you to learn from your mistakes and prevents you from running into the same problems over and over again.

5. [learn how to use GitHub]

No explanation is needed, just please learn how to use it. You are welcome.

6. [avoid procrastinating!]

You already know this is a bad habit and if you don't do it, congratulations you can skip this part or you can continue reading. Procrastinating results in projects messily put together the hour before it's due (don't lie, you've been there) and professors notice it, don't think they don't. Procrastination is something we don't want to do but I'm not gonna sit here and say "stop procrastinating" because that won't work (it surely doesn't work for me), but I have some tips to avoid procrastinating.

a. Create fake deadlines for assignments that are actually earlier than the real due date! This tricks your brain to procrastinate according to the fake deadline but you'll still have time to fix and polish your assignment before the real due date. This works for me 100% of the time.

b. Work with your classmate(s) on assignments. We often procrastinate when we're working on projects alone because we are working at our own pace, which is usually avoiding doing it all week and cramming it the night before we turn it in. When you have a partner working on it with you it's required that you work at a steady pace in order to keep up with them and finish the assignment on time. You can either meet up with your partner after class or online. This tip works like a charm, it's motivated me to work on assignments that I've been neglecting when my classmates asked me "how did you do X in our assignment?" or "let's screenshare our code and work on it together!"

7. [explore different fields in computer science]

Computer Science is a very broad study that has many specific concentrations. Someone might have zero interest in machine learning but love cybersecurity and one who has no plans on learning how to create programs might have a passion for computer hardware. You need to explore different areas you feel like you might be interested in. Visit workshops on them or take a couple of classes at a local CC and see which you love the most.

Good luck with your endeavors in computer science! Hopefully, these tips help you and remind to never give up. You can do this! I’m sure I missed a bunch of stuff so share some stuff that helps you stay on track. you are very tired and have a lot of work to do before your meeting tomorrow and have a lot of feelings. you usually have a lot of feelings on thursdays! you have extra feelings today. you need to set aside some times to deal with (”have”) those feelings, but it needs to be in the future not now.

you also need to set aside some time in the near future to have some feels about un/compensated in/visible emotional work, boundaries, values, and being honest with yourself about plans and realistic expectations and consequences. this is not gonna happen before your meeting tomorrow. this is not gonna happen before your meeting tomorrow! you have a lot of prep and the prep is more important. moral purity is a trashcan, humans are only ~60% water and cannot be brita filtered, this is the part about being honest with yourself and yes it sucks but you get to make choices and some of those choices sow future resentment and you know this. but you do need to do at least some of this before sunday. in fact! i am officially scheduling some time tomorrow, after your morning meeting and before sundown (at least a little! emotionally and physically exhausted mid afternoon bus catching is a real possibility but you can spend ten minutes acknowledging you have feelings about this, and if that’s all you can do that is fine) for this specific thing. be chrestomanci, put your finger on the timetable, send the feelings to tomorrow afternoon.

you have fourteen hours like sixteen hours now before your meeting > be victim of a change in plans - regroup and reply also, surprise! advocate for yourself about an accessibility issue/accommodation you identified last week - a take a breath and a little extra time so you feel like you have a better idea of what you’re doing tomorrow -> probably you still won’t have time to have feelings before your meeting. this is inconvenient because your meeting now starts around the time you could have reasonably expected it to be over at the latest, and now you have to reschedule feelings too. you almost certainly will not have time to fit them in before your meeting, and even if you do have time you shouldn’t because you don’t actually want to have them before the meeting. plan changes are wacky and horrid like that. in the extremely unlikely event that you find yourself with time before the meeting not devoted to meeting prep, you have lots of a) listmaking to do that is not about feelings just about the tyrannies of physics (time, space, matter, etc), b) various laundry-related tasks -> you are now the potential recipient of schrodinger’s email! it is more like a cat (good) than most emails (bad) because either it won’t come and you don’t have to deal with it or it will come and give you more information. it will not be a surprise, you are prepared either way, this is analogy is a protective cover for your furniture so the mystery box (uncertainty) doesn’t shred your soft chair (schedule) - garbage and recycle - acknowledge you have reasonable underwear options and can put the laundry off another day (without having to procrastinating about it for four hours first) (- procrastinate incomprehensibly much anyway) - teeth, pjs, meds, bed asap, try to sleep, hopefully your tired will override your feelings, if not don’t @me just try your best - get up, food, coffee, shower (hair), clothes, teeth * review communications (what info they do/n’t have, training plans, what they’ve articulated as difficulties and what would be helpful), refresh re: issues and what info have (you did this a little last night, but make some notes about what seems important) * find the docs on yr comp, make yr comp fit for public viewing * check the dropbox i don’t see blank docs, but the 2018 budget is there in docx and there’s a monthly xlsx one to use for an example (in the unlikely event of the blank docs being m.i.a. it could also be copied and reworked) * spend a brief time trying to find your training notes * refresh memory using actual docs/budget submissions (only use own monthly notes if necessary, because you only have scheduled time for the inevitable feelings after the meeting) * script, think about your goals and what you want to accomplish, what is likely to be most helpful and effective, try to troubleshoot - more coffee - pack bag - 1:30(latest) + 2:00 bus - try to be chill and enjoy yourself, you like these people, you value them as humans, you would like to support them in their feelings and experiences, you would like them to feel appreciated and respected and competent, feelings jail is a you problem

have some feelings, make some lists, try to have goals, remember priorities exist (and apparently this needs its own (v incomplete temp) bb list of things that need to be included) - bullshit re: un/healthy un/sustainable un/compensated in/visible emotional work feelings jail, see above - the future, some stuff (and especially your knowledge of it) changed this week. some of the things are potentially really exciting! you are allowed to have other feelings about it too. you have to do some planning and feasibility and goal setting around it. unfortunately, you’re probably also gonna have a lot of feelings about it too (you are allowed to feel tired and frustrated and dreamy and ambitious and scared and sad and hopeful and all sorts of things. there are lots of things! you are not allowed to self-sabotage.) - feelings jail is a strategy, not a solution, do some workbook - check in/do a social interaction each w/ M and a (you are gonna have feelings about this. you will probably need to strategize and/or plan. (nice things! human relationships! so hard!) all this is fine. if you still just wanna curl up on a couch and do repetitive things with (a) needle(s) when you get to this item on the list, tbh maybe like, consider asking if M might also want to, depending on their availability? also just. send the damn texts.) - read the brain problem flow chart post - read the march org newsletter - TRUUST/UU World - this is all seeing at the trees and looking maps of the forest, but there’s also a whole actual forest and you gotta walk in it (and maybe consider an actual walk with the dog)

Episode #3: “Like holy shit. I DID THAT!” -Birch

-Holy shit I did a thing!!! So this challenge was a little game of attack and defend. We found that an Uppercase i looks the same as a lowercase L (I vs l) sooo, I had to go cause my mom wanted the wifi off, so I sent 2 messages (which got me out) but I replaced an i with an L and why both defended themselves which got 2 people out (Timmy Z and Ali) left only Cindi, who promptly quit I think it was said that should couldn’t do the comp leading into tomorrow. So then my tribe won immunity. But like holy shit. I DID THAT!! I’m convinced my iconic shit only comes out when Lukas and Olivia host me. ILY both of them!!! I also got sent to the tree house. So now I have to chose what looks like a swap, music videos, and honestly idk what the last one is. It has to do with Alexander Graham Bell, or maybe a game of telephone?

-Soooooo, I have to exile someone. I kinda feel like going from a weird standpoint I want to exile myself cause then I am safe, and I don’t have to worry about a challenge, but on the other hand I could keep myself in just incase there is the possibility of a swap, so I can help my tribe and exile someone else who I want to keep safe. But also trust can only go so far, and I have trust issues. If I exile myself I could fuck myself over. I’m also indecisive so this is fun. I need to look at the cast and think who is best to exile. Maybe someone I want to work with in the future. Keep them safe, and pray to the gods that I stay safe.

-so... czern went without a hitch. he voted vi super randomly, so i kind of assume he was told he was going. but i truly do not care, he went home so im vibing. and then we had... that challenge. and immediately it was kind of clear we were losing JKLFDSA, it was kind of a disaster. we had an immmediate, early numbers disadvantage and that gave the Jack tribe wiggle room to try every trick in the book to psych us out. I was the first person to survive being jumped by them from my tribe (ilivedbitch.jpg), but also we tried SO much. Someone needs to call Nev, because the Annie tribe TRULY said time to catfish. We did the lowercase L thing, we tried EVERYTHING but it was a struggle. Credit to Birch for getting Me/Timmy out simultaneously, that was super impressive. But we are back at tribal AGAIN. and its starting to get dicey because... there isn't anyone i actually want to vote out on this tribe. Like I assume Dan is going to go this time, because he was gone FIRST in the challenge and is very quiet...? But then we are probably gonna swap at 16, which is scary because a) i don't want us to lose again and go into a swap with a MEGA numbers disadvantage b) who else am i gonna vote? timmy? it gets DICEY. so hopefully dan goes and we do an exile swap... because otherwise it gets tetchy. im getting sus with austin too, king is doing a lot and im gonna keep tabs on it. im also super afraid of the other tribe, that conglomerate of keegan/zach/birch is super scary to me. im gonna get bodied by a network of pre-existing connections and i am not looking forward to it

Hello hello! After a busy few days I'm finally home and I've been having more chances to really get to know my tribemates better. Cindi is an absolute queen and we've talked about cooking and our siblings and I think we really vibe. Timmy and I talked a little strategy and he seems to really like me. Both of them aren't in my alliance soooo things might have to change sooner rather than later if we have to go to a third tribal. I've been talking a lot with Ali, Collin, and Austin too! Austin actually started asking me stuff about furries tonight, which I'm happy to talk about, but it is a little weird to be a representative of all furries LOL. I think as of now the best choice for me is to vote for Dan, I haven't really connected with him at all. I've been hearing his name from some others too. So for now my strategy is to play the social game and keep positive. I AM a former winner after all, even if I don't feel my win was too impressive, people will use that against me if I try to push an agenda this early on.

I think we are all voting for Dan but I haven’t been around much today and also... my DMs are a little dry! I’m trying to catch up with everyone right now though. I don’t remember what the last confessional I made was. But we won the challenge thanks to some brilliant strategizing. And then CINDI just yeeted herself from the game. I now have an alliance with RACHAEL, ZACH and GAVIN. Which, in addition to my alliance of JESS and BIRCH, means I’m solid with 5 of the 8 other members in my tribe. Gotta love that.

Do I have any idea what is actually happening in this game. Absolutely not!! I need to pick up the pace and message more people and I know that is on me. I want to be here and play hard and will work better on doing so.

So this round, I made an official chat with Collin and Cindi. Good news is, that will help with idol hunt guessing and such. We already ruled out that dolphins is a no go, and a few other dead end paths. I also have the light advantage which I am super excited about but nervous on when to use. With the vote this round, i find out there is a 6 person alliance chat of everyone except for myself, cindi, and Dan. Unfortunately this round there is nothing we can do to turn that tide, but next round when it is 8 of us, we only need 1 person to flip over to cindi and I plus Collin (assuming we are both still here) to make that vote go through. I know Dan is voting for me this round and I will be voting for him. He is HORRIBLE in challenges. He has done the worst in all three of the challenges so far, and honestly its his time to go. He should have gone last round to be honest but for some reason the tribe wanted Czear or whatever. Hoping for the best tonight I guess.

ap top 25 list: 2k17, a month late

The AP “Audio Popularity” Poll was Ben’s way to get us all to make a list and talk about our favorite songs of the month, back when we were all living in the same house. He describes it here. I have since cut back to doing it every year, with the ever shifting goal of defining “audio popularity” and “favorite” and “best”.

This year’s list, 5 years after Ben’s death, my main goal is to identify 25 awesome tracks that I’d love to talk to Ben about. They are my favorite 25 songs of the year, a focus on new discoveries (tho a few songs from last year’s list show up), songs that I surely would’ve dubbed for Ben back in the day.

25. the rats: the rats’ revenge

60’s punk rager - an era we did not ever go deep into, but now it’s time to eat up those Back from the Grave comps.

24. fluf: stuffed animal

Not their typical noise-grunge, which Ben yeah loved (he lived Sub Pop inexplicably into the 2010s), but a Sebadoh-esque minimal gem.

23. LNZ: blondehairdown

The most quoted song of 2k17 for me. Ben was always into weird local rappers no matter where he was. Sharing this internet-destroying monstrosity with him would be a conversation for thee ages!

22. new kingdom: terror mad visionary

tom waits as MC sounds like a thing ben would love or hate (he rejected lots of undie rappers for their not slamming hard enough) but this stuff is so pirate-vocalled that i’d love to have asked him what was going on here.

21. octa#grape: dirigibles

The most soul-junk of galaxalag’s new group, spinning all sortsa weird beats into their calm noise.

20. wovenhand: golden blossom

16 hp was a shared favorite, and i’d love to go thru these new DEE albums with ben.

19. slim cessna’s auto club: commandment 3

Seeing these guys live was a total revival that was up Ben’s alley. Dwight Pentecost and his doubleneck guitar with hologram switching from Sacred Heart to Marian Immaculate Heart. Munly looking like a straight up ghoul man, gathering us into a circle, and chiding me for screaming the lyrics too loud. Slim just hamming it up preacher style. Rebecca wielding all sortsa kitchen sinks and keeping it together. They encored to “Commandment 3” in a karaoke choreograph line dance. One of the few shows I’ve seen that really produced a spectacle within a minimalist framework.

18. kleenex girl wonder: dont wait up

An alternative bee-thousand.

17. puff pieces: competition

The local DC stuff always seems to be ahead of the rest.

16. arroyo deathmatch: swimming the witch

They acoustic thrash their folk without guitars and just uke! This one sprays rap tropes and references all over the Crassy gender politics. Joyous bleakness!

15. the out_circuit: come out shooting

A wonderful sequel to our favorite Frodus “Year of the Hex.”

14. ramshackle glory: punk is the worst form of music, except for all the others

Anarcho politics and emotions, what drew me into punk.

13. a fistful of dynamite: smoke it, like a cigarette

More acoustic thrash folk with an even worse vocalist. “Write my own favorite songs/ write my own singalongs...you think this is bad? Well it just gets more rough!”. The world’s worst snare sound. Charmed!

12. shellac: riding bikes

He was an albini fan, and we would definitely have spent time jamming his new ones. And what an epic this one is.

11. bradley hathaway: the world is screaming

I could see ben finding it utterly pretentious, but bradley straddles that line of being so serious but also so reckless, so honest and so charming to me. His new album is the best, riotous blasphemy as prayer, but this one does the post rock building ben taught me to dig.

10. lou barlow: try 2 b

Our indie legend put out a great one (years olde already?), oh well, it slams lo-fi.

9. the beakers: 4 steps towards a cultural revolution

Ben downplays a lot of thee weird punk, but weird punk from his beloved Seattle scene? He’d dig! This out Ubus David Thomas. Ultra.

8. ps eliot: the cyborg

Reminds me of so much of the stuff on the ktru tapes, but this struck me very hard this year.

7. lifter puller: mission viejo

Most of their weird stuff has more to discuss, i guess, with the spoken stories and nonsense arrangements, but this is just an indie rock emotion block of thee highest order.

6. defiance, ohio: calling old friends

A classic campfire singalong.

5. henry thomas: when the train comes along

Not Thomas’ most canonical or comp’d performance, but such a stomper. Ben got me into old timey music and the last cd’s he ripped from me were the pseudo-old-timey boxset from Fonotone.

4. ballydowse: sails

An albini-produced christian-anarcho celtic folk/punk group relying prominently on tuvan throat singing. And yet it took me til 2k17 to find it. Ben used to be after a Crashdog CD at Family Bookstore, but this stuff would’ve taken it to a whole nother level. The best band you don’t know!

3. snail mail: static buzz

Woulda been a ktru darling. Local bmore rock girl makes it big - new album gonna be on Matadork.

2. mike knott: double

We always ignored the mike knott stuff, but this year has been all about rediscovering the blonde vinyl roster, and that dip goes deep. This song is an undeniable one, whether live at Cornerstone or with the *gasp* secular Aunty Bettys playing it.

This raw rock was the first new rekkerd i listened to after we found out ben had died, but a song that has only emerged more recently as a post-Pedro emotional cleansing monster. Ben loved “Every New Day” with the Reese Roper vocals, he’d love this too. & it’s the best song ever, so he’d better...

The Definition Of American Prosperity Needs An Adjustment

There’s a common joke here in the SF Bay Area.

How do you know someone went to Stanford? They’ll tell you within the first couple of sentences.

We Americans have a tremendous desire for status and prestige. When we work hard for something, it’s our second nature to tell everybody about our achievement.

You do it. I do it. We all do it. No big deal if we aren’t incessant about it.

But at a certain point, it becomes concerning when we start complaining about our struggles despite being in an extremely fortunate situation.

Let me share one public example and then my own as case studies to illustrate how unaware we truly are about our good fortune.

Being Unable To Recognize American Prosperity

Charlotte from Time magazine sent out this tweet she wrote about everybody’s favorite politician, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. It’s a good in-depth piece about how and why AOC came to power.

What is strange about her tweet is that she claims people her age (20s and 30s) have never experienced American prosperity in their adult lifetimes.

How could this be when the parents of people her age have been able to save and invest in the biggest bull market in history! If only we were able to rewind time and invest as Biff did in Back To The Future III.

Before rushing to judgment, I did what any rational person would do and tried to understand why Charlotte has had such a difficult time in her life so far.

Maybe she grew up in a poor single-parent household in a difficult neighborhood. Maybe she didn’t even go to public college because her parents couldn’t afford the tuition. Or maybe she has a disability.

Lo and behold, it was easy to understand her background because her parents have their own Wikipedia pages! I thought only rich and/or famous people have their own Wiki page? Silly me.

Here are some tidbits.

Jonathan Alter (father): A graduate of Phillips Academy (private prep school) and Harvard University. American journalist, best-selling author, documentary filmmaker and television producer who was a columnist and senior editor for Newsweek magazine from 1983 until 2011, and has written three New York Times best-selling books about American presidents

Emily Jane Lazar (mother): A graduate of Hotchkiss School (private prep school) and Harvard University. Co-executive producer of the former Comedy Central show The Colbert Report;three children: Charlotte (b. 1990), a writer for TIME Magazine, Tommy (b. 1991), a producer for HBO Sports, and Molly (b. 1993), who works in venture capital.

Then, of course, there’s Charlotte, who also went to Harvard University and is a staff writer for Time Magazine. I don’t know whether she went to an elite private prep school or not. But I assume so based on her parents’ backgrounds.

Most would agree that if you went to private grade school, private university, and have rich and accomplished parents, you’ve probably experienced some American prosperity in your life. Some might even conclude that all you’ve ever experienced is American prosperity.

Yet, I believe Charlotte and other wealthy people like her truly do not feel they have experienced American prosperity because their life is all they know. I’m sure Charlotte is a fine and nice person. She’s just a little unaware about how good folks like her truly have it.

As a parent, this lack of appreciation for prosperity is one of my worries of raising myself in a comfortable environment. He’ll have a warm home, food whenever he wants, and mostly prosperous friends. When life is so easy, you don’t end up pushing yourself to make something of your own.

The lack of struggle is one of the reasons why we considered moving back to Virginia instead of to Hawaii. Just look at how UVA turned it around in the NCAA tournament by losing in the first round last year to winning it all in 2019. Hardship creates hunger and growth! In Virginia, we could send him to a public school and let him experience more racial altercations.

Whereas in Hawaii, we would send him to likely a private school where more classmates looked like him. We’d also probably buy a nice house on or near the beach and finally start living it up in retirement.

But if you start with a Ferrari, how can you ever appreciate any other car when it’s finally time for you to buy one on your own?

If you’ve spent your entire life in a luxurious home, good luck feeling good about renting or buying a place with your own salary.

Financial Samurai Case Study

Now let’s look at my own lack of recognizing American prosperity. In the post, The Wide Implications Of The College Admissions Scandal, one of the points I write about is:

The middle class may become wealthier and happier. As college becomes less important in finding a job, there will be fewer people spending four years and borrowing tens of thousands in student loans. With more time and less financial baggage, more people will be able to aggressively save to buy a house, start a family, and save for retirement.

I thought this was a good thing. However, what I didn’t realize was that by writing the words “middle class,” based on my current position as a financially independent person, it could be construed as insulting to the “true middle-class” American.

Here is a response from a regular Financial Samurai reader,

Let me start by stating that I love your blog and your views on general and I salute you for your consistent approach. However, one area I repeatedly roll my eyes as is when you describe your upbringing as “middle class”.

Based on your posts, your parents had jobs as foreign service officers for the US Government. That is about as secure a job and lifestyle as one could expect (all living expenses comped by taxpayers). I’m not saying it is a cushy job or easy, as I respect those who do it, but it is an elite job.

Your views are warped and you seem to want to cast yourself as middle class struggle when in reality you had a huge advantage over most of the country.

Maybe not compared to your Wall Street buddies, but compared to most you had a silver spoon. This doesn’t discount any of your success, or the impact of racism that you said you faced which I agree is a challenge, but you need to get real on your upbringing and your parents jobs – not middle class.

This is fantastic feedback that shines a huge blind spot on my lack of awareness that I didn’t grow up middle class, even though I wasn’t writing about my own upbringing to begin with.

All this time, I thought I grew up in an average American household. Here are some data points from my upbringing that made me believe so. My dad verified the numbers.

Went to public high school (free) and college ($2,800/year in tuition at The College of William & Mary)

Dad went to the University of Hawaii (public), Mom went to National Taiwan University (public)

Parents drove an 8-year-old Toyota Camry (bought for $5,000)

Worked at McDonald’s, worked as a mover, and did random jobs as a temp during the summers

Lived in a ~1,700 sqft townhouse that was purchased for $190,000

Parents worked at the US State Department and my mom made between $25,000 – $55,000 and my dad made between $15,000 – $119,000 after a 30+ year career after serving in Vietnam

Here is the actual townhouse I lived in from Google street view. Ah, the fond high school memories. I had the room with the balcony.

It’s now becoming clear that I didn’t grow up middle class, but upper middle class or some would say rich. For example, while some classmates had to walk a couple miles to school, I got to ride a bike. As a result, I could get more sleep and do better in class.

During my time growing up in the Philippines, Zambia, Taiwan, and Malaysia before high school I witnessed a lot of poverty. In comparison, my family was definitely rich. Who gets to live abroad as a child while his parents get to honorably serve their country building foreign relationships? Not many.

Further, being born Asian seems to have given me a leg up in America because how could it not when elite private schools require a higher hurdle rate for admission? Surely these universities must have scientific data behind their decision. Otherwise, that would be discrimination.

For those who have been offended by my belief that the middle class will benefit from the college admissions scandal by helping level the playing field, I apologize. I really didn’t mean any harm and will try to only write about wealthy people stuff going forward.

Why We Can’t Recognize American Prosperity

Here are four reasons why I think some of us don’t recognize our prosperity.

1) Our government and think tanks arbitrarily define middle-class income and status for us nationally instead of locally. Pew Research, for example, believes that a middle-class income ranges between 67% to 200% of the median household income. While some in government, in order to raise the income tax rate at lower income levels, believe rich means earning income over $200,000, regardless of location.

2) Life’s struggles. No matter how rich and powerful you are, you will always experience some sort of hardship growing up. Common hardships include divorce, fights, bullying, rejections, mental illness, loneliness and deaths. These negatives are very real and make us feel less prosperous than we really are.

3) Our desire to always compare and want more. Even though my family drove a perfectly fine 8-year-old Toyota Camry during my upper class upbringing, I was envious of my rich friend whose family drove a new Honda Accord. I still remember that new car smell.

Even though AOC attended Boston University for $70,000 a year in today’s dollars, she might be envious of Charlotte Alter who attended higher ranked Harvard University for only $65,000 a year.

Conversely, Charlotte might be envious of AOC because AOC, with a less prestigious degree, is the second most popular politician in America. The comparisons go on and on and can make us miserable.

4) We’re simply ignorant about how the rest of the country and the world live. We need to travel more. We also should strive to learn another language to immerse ourselves in another culture. If we do, we will better appreciate how good we have things and get along with more people.

Let’s recognize our prosperity while trying to remain humble. If we can help others become more prosperous, all the better.

Always attribute most of your success to luck rather than to hard work. You can still secretly work hard behind the scenes, but never let anybody know. Saying you worked hard in today’s environment is gradually becoming an insult.

Finally, recognize the growing anger in America towards those who have more and adapt. When in doubt, be respectful towards those who denigrate your efforts. And if you feel that a respectful dialogue cannot ensue, then move on. There are so many better things to do with your time.

Remember, “talent is universal, but opportunity is not.” It is up to those of us with opportunity to help those who do not.

Big Lots Tossed In The Bargain Bin

Big Lots’ (BIG) investors must be having a rough Labor Day weekend.

The stock got hit hard on Friday, following a fiscal 2Q18 that failed to excite. Revenues of $1.22 billion landed short of consensus but only by a narrow $8 million, as the nearly immaterial YOY top-line increase driven by timid comps of 1.6% was almost entirely offset by a smaller brick-and-mortar footprint. EPS of $0.59, pressured by shrinking margins, came in eight cents below consensus and year-ago levels.

BIG is now back to trading at June 2014 levels, dividends accounted for, with the stock having severely underperformed the broad market (SPY) and peers Dollar General (DG) and Dollar Tree (DLTR).

The results of the quarter

Even though sales figures did not impress, most of Big Lots’ troubles seem to be more noticeably associated with profitability. COGS increased only slightly YOY, but at a faster pace than revenues. Gross margin suffered further from higher merchandise markdowns, never a very encouraging sign in the retail world.

Causing what I estimate to have been the most damage to earnings were operating expenses that increased nearly 3% YOY, despite a lower store count. The headwinds were likely the result of investments in the “Store of the Future” format, along with higher wages that have been eating into the company’s tax reform benefits. Despite a lower share count driven by Big Lots’ continued efforts to return cash to shareholders, net earnings per share still dipped about 12% YOY.

Taking a step back

This is the first time that I take a closer look at Big Lots. So before I draw too many conclusions about the stock based on the results of the most recent quarter and the short-term outlook (management’s full-year EPS expectations have dropped a sizable $0.12 at the mid-point of the guidance range), let me take a step back and look at the company from a fundamentals perspective.

Unlike peers Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Burlington Stores (BURL), Big Lots has been slowly shrinking, with store count having dipped by 16 in 2017 (about 1.1% of the total) and 17 in 2016. Even with the alleged strong performance of the company’s new e-commerce platform, comps do not seem robust enough to spark top-line growth beyond the low single-digits. The Store of the Future strategy is a mid-to-long term attempt at turning the tides. Yet, it is hard to think of Big Lots as anything that resembles a discount retailer with solid growth prospects.

On the balance sheet, the company looks robust from a liquidity perspective. Its net debt position as a percentage of total assets has deteriorated YOY, but Big Lots continues to be the least leveraged company within the peer group based on this specific metric (see chart above). Big Lots is also a solid generator of cash flow from operations, all of which has been diligently routed to the company’s capex, dividend and share buyback commitments.

The dividend yield has become much more enticing following the recent share price weakness, at 2.8%. But considering the revenue growth and margin challenges, I would not bet on the dividend payments continuing to grow at a 20%-plus pace, unless Big Lots (1) chooses to take on more debt to finance the cash distribution or (2) manages to improve its financial performance substantially.

On the stock

I cannot claim to be overly excited about an investment in BIG. I believe the company is struggling more than it should to create top- and bottom-line growth, despite the potential positive developments in e-commerce, store remodeling, and the new CEO announcement.

Those interested in BIG at current levels are most likely to be attracted to the stock’s rock-bottom valuations (see above). Current-year P/E of 9.6x is once again flirting with 18-month lows, even though consensus estimate suggests a healthy long-term EPS growth rate of 11% – that I happen to be skeptical about. Deal hunters, therefore, might be pleased to find this stock tossed in the bargain bin, and may choose to scoop up a few shares.
