anyways it is important that steph grew up in the suburbs. it is important to her story as an outsider of not just the batfam but gotham city itself. her relative isolation in the suburbs means something.
similarly, tim's childhood spent in flux & boarding schools, but his home base being gotham city itself (through his parents' various apartments throughout the city) is also important to his story. gotham city is the epicenter of security for him. he may have to leave sometimes, but it is the place where he returns home, where he has any semblance of 'this is home' (until they move out to bristol ofc, and that becomes home). he grew up in the city, many different parts of it. that's important!!

Rough art, but wanted to show Dr Daria's colour scheme! (From here). Heavily based on her canon colours lol
For context, this is a New Yoke version of Maria who didn't have a version of Shadow at all and survived to adulthood. She's in her late 40s and thinks her relatives (the Chaos Council) are stupid and very much stands against them

Jason is 100% like ‘fuck you and fuck all of your spoiled brats, old man’ until he finds out that Stephanie and Duke are both from the Narrows and then he’s like ‘.....fuck you and fuck some of your spoiled brats. old man.’
They form a club. The Street Rats Society. dick is an honorary member.
they complain about the upper class. they bully bruce for not knowing how much a banana costs. they unionize and cause mayhem whenever someone forgets to tip at a coffee shop. every time someone mentions off hand how expensive something is (designer clothes, aged liqueurs, cars, etc) they go ‘it costs HOW much?!? .... you could buy so many 4for4s from wendys with that,,,’
one time Tim goes, ‘I was middle class once. does that count for anything?’ and duke flies at him with a knife.

as i'm workin on my Ancient stuff- i've got to say that it is really interesting and neat (read: nasty) that there's a good chance most of the Ancient population probably didn't actually wear masks. but We think they did cuz the only really solid evidence of what they looked like at all all comes from places of the higher social circles. and those strived for religious... superiority, i guess. brownie points, not actual dedication to the religion for the sake of its teachings but either because it made them look good, put them higher in the social hierarchy or whatever manipulation have you (or the flawed look upon the religion aka "we gotta get out of this cycle no matter what")
all we are left with are the bastards. the simple people and their cultures that were left to weather the Iterators' rains were simply washed away. nobody cared for their way of life- as long as it served the higher circles well and they stayed submissive (enough so that at the end everyone would take a dip in the void), nobody had to give a singular shit
just how much do we not know about the Ancients' *everything* because of this disregard? how much do we think we are right about, when such is true only for the small but privileged piece of the species?

Michael Gira was living below the poverty line and working in a grueling factory job at the time he formed Swans. Power and greed and the ways both dictate the notion of freedom and pleasure found in those being oppressed were fresh in his mind. The harsh sounds in factories that littered NYC 40+ years ago were replicated in Swans' music.
Another tidbit: Michael Gira spent time in an Israeli prison as a teenager and the songs on Cop likely reflect the brutality he and others experienced while incarcerated.
