Any fic or TMBS au headcanons or ideas you want to share? 👀

Ooooo I have so many but I’ll try to limit it a bit!

So for TMBS au headcanons one concept that always entertains me (and I know I've told you this one) is book!Curtain and show!Curtain meeting up (aka L.D. and Nathanial to make my life easier). To me, this is the equivalent of the Doofenshmirtz and Doofenshmirtz-2 meetup in Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension.

They would get along and talk about their plans for world domination for about 5 minutes before L.D realizes that Nathanial actually has a heartTM and when Nathanial asks where SQ is and how he's doing, L.D says "...the Executive...? What about him?" Nathanial then realizes he has to throw hands and it won't end well. He also realizes he has another SQ to take in (who needs it, poor guy!!!).

Another fun AU headcanon with these two is the idea of them as theater kids. It's been talked about a lot, but in my mind, there are different types, as someone who's been around theater kids for a long time (and yes, was one).

Nathanial is definitely an Annoying Theater KidTM. There is no doubt about this. He is the type of theater kid to correct your harmonies (usually in a gratingly nice way), steal the spotlight whenever he can and overall is not a team player. How he was in that one performance as a kid tells me everything I need to know, tbh.

He also will definitely spontaneously sing and dance in the hallways, resulting in several traffic jams. Self-awareness? This guy has none.

However, there is an earnestness to him you can't deny. He loves his craft. He corrects your harmonies for the betterment of the show. He may be annoying, but it's because he wants the show to succeed. Part of the very reason he's annoying is because he's RIGHT. You hate him but also secretly love him. Does he sing "Santa Fe" for every audition? Yes. Does he hit that high note at the end? Also yes. If he doesn't get the lead, you better believe he will do his best as Tree #3. Tree #3 may look like he's doing too much, but really he's just putting his all into it and that comes off as stealing the spotlight.

L.D., on the other hand, is the worst kind of theater kid. He has a Preshow Ritual. It is an hour long and if you interrupt it, you will be dead to him. He constantly argues with the director about why they didn't put him center front in every dance number. He doesn't correct your harmonies, he just sings louder than you so you're not heard. Team player? What do you mean, this is the L.D. Show now there is no team. Anyone not on his side is against him and his clique (as small as it is) will do their best to shun you if you so much as breathe wrong. Heaven help you if you're near him the day the cast list comes out and he doesn't get his desired role...it's not pretty. He practices his monologues a hundred times in front of a mirror to the point of looking over-rehearsed. A real example of this is in TPD when L.D makes his whole villain speech after capturing the kids while circling around them....you cannot tell me he didn't practice that. It was way too choreographed.

This type of theater kid will not rest until he has gotten a lead and even that will not satisfy. Only complete control of his role and the show in it will be enough. He doesn't love the craft per se, he loves the craft done HIS WAY. The only thing saving professional crews from working with him is word-of-mouth about his insufferable personality (one show had the misfortune of picking him as an ensemble character -- he lasted two days before being fired).

So yes, both Curtains are Annoying Theater KidsTM, but annoying in their special ways :)

That got me thinking about what the rest of the MBS gang would do for their extracurricular activities in a high school AU. Because they differ, I'm dividing them by book and show canon. I'm keeping this short, but I can deep dive if y'all have specific questions on why I picked a certain activity for someone.

As for fic ideas, I actually have one I'm working on right now, it's slow progress because it's my first one, but I'm super excited about it. The only hints I will give is that it involves Milligan and Kate and was inspired by a post I saw a while back. Hopefully, it'll be done soon and I can share it with you!

All Systems Red, Chapter 6

(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Murderbot Diaries, read this one!)

In which Murderbot makes a joke, to a human, and doesn't spontaneously combust.

The humans had debated where to go, within the time they'd had, knowing their supply levels. Ratthi has coined "EvilSurvey" for the enemy, in the absence of another name, and the group knows EvilSurvey have access to their HubSystem data, including where they'd surveyed previously, so they had to pick somewhere new. The result was in some rocky jungled hills.

While MB scouts the area to make sure nothing can drag off the little hopper in the night, it thinks about its options. It's not precisely half bot and half human, because those parts aren't discrete from each other. What it knows is that it can't abandon the humans, because it can imagine them all too well being hurt by the rogue SecUnits, and it hates having emotions about reality. Besides, it has no resources here, and nothing to do, and a limited media entertainment archive.

When it returns, Mensah says she knows it's more comfortable with the opaqued helmet, but she thinks the humans will benefit from seeing, rather than a construct, a person who's helping them, since that's how she thinks of it. MB's insides melt, and it un-opaques the visor, and has the helmet tuck back into its armour. Mensah thanks it, and they go inside.

The humans all have a long discussion about what's going on.(1) The main point is that they must want something in the blacked-out regions of the map. MB brings up that EvilSurvey might believe the company and PresAux's beneficiaries won't look further than a rogue SecUnit if they can blame it on that. They can't disappear two survey teams unless their "corporate or political entity" doesn't care, so it asks if DeltFall's would care about them, and PresAux's would care about this crew.

Every human turns to stare at it, and Volescu asks if it doesn't know who they are.(2) MB says there was an info packet, but it never read it, because it didn't care. Gurathin is dismissive, but MB restates: it was indifferent and annoyed.

Gurathin asks why MB doesn't want them to look at it. It clenches its jaw so hard it gets a performance reliability alert, and snaps that it's not a sexbot, its appearance is beside the point.

Ratthi snorts, but MB realizes it's not directed at it as he tells Gurathin that MB is shy. Overse adds that it doesn't like interacting with humans, which makes perfect sense given how constructs are treated in corporate-political areas.

Gurathin asks if they could punish it by looking at it, to replace its governor module. MB says, maybe, until it remembered it has guns for arms. Mensah asks if Gurathin is satisfied at the threat but ultimate lack of violence. Gurathin says, for now, but he wanted to be sure it wasn't under outside influence.

Arada says that's enough of that, this is a learning experience for everyone, including MB, who has to learn how to interact with humans on its own terms as a free agent.

Mensah sends a private message in the feed, hoping MB is alright. MB whines that she only cares because she needs it. Mensah says she DOES need it, the humans all do, because none of them have experience in situations like this. MB is the only one who won't panic, who will keep steady.

That was absolutely true. And I could help, just by being the SecUnit. I was the one who was supposed to keep everybody safe. I panic all the time, you just can’t see it, I told her. I added the text signifier for “joke.” She didn’t answer, but she looked down, smiling to herself.(3)

Ratthi asks where EvilSurvey are stationed on the planet. MB says it left a few drones around the habitat that may pick something up on audio or visual to help. It thinks internally about how it had downloaded the SecSystem onto the big hopper and purged the whole storage in the hub, so EvilSurvey won't get anything about its functions.

Mensah points out that it will have to go back in range of the hub to retrieve that data, and asks how long they're likely to stay at the habitat. Everyone groans at the potential loss of their samples and the things they had to leave behind, but MB says there's nothing there that EvilSurvey is likely to want, so not very long.

Mensah sets up a watch schedule, including explicit time for MB to do diagnostics and recharge. It plans to use the time to also watch Sanctuary Moon and decompress after so much dealing with humans.

After the humans settle for the night, it walks the perimeter again. When it comes back, Ratthi is on watch at the big hopper's hatch. It removes its helmet again, and asks why everyone was so shocked it asked if their political entity would miss them. Ratthi smiles and says Mensah is the political entity. Preservation Alliance is a non-corporate system, and Mensah is the current elected administrator on the steering committee. One of the principles of Preservation Alliance is that admins continue their regular work, and hers required this survey.

MB is still processing this and feeling a little stupid for not reading the packet, when Ratthi adds that bots are considered full citizens in Preservation territory. MB is internally dismissive of this, noting that even "full citizen" bots require human guardians.

MB reroutes back to the subject at hand: the company knows who Mensah is, then. Ratthi confirms, and MB thinks how the company would scramble to have help here in record time if the beacon had launched. Not even a bribe would stop it.

It seems unlikely that EvilSurvey knows who Mensah is, given their behaviour, and they have no access to the SecSystem storage with the info packet that could tell them. MB isn't sure how to use that information, but thinks about it anyway.(4)

The next day, MB prepares to take the little hopper back in range of the habitat to check the drones. It wants to go alone, but Mensah, Pin-Lee, and Ratthi are also set to go along. MB is upset, because it can't stop catastrophizing the situation and focusing on all the ways every aspect can go wrong.(5) Gurathin comes up and says he's going too. MB snarks that it thought he was satisfied. It takes him a minute to remember, ah, the conversation last night. MB lies blatantly that it remembers everything it's ever heard, though it clarifies internally that it deletes most of it as useless junk.

Mensah intervenes on the feed, saying Gurathin doesn't have to come if MB is uncomfortable. MB would rather the others weren't coming, because it wants them safe, but it wouldn't mind so much(6) if Gurathin died in the events to come. It tells Mensah it's fine, and they all leave.

MB circles off further west, to prevent EvilSurvey from reverse engineering their course back to the real camp. The humans are mostly sleeping in their seats, but Gurathin is awake in the copilot's chair with it.

Eventually, Gurathin says he has a question, but waits for MB to give him permission to continue, which it thinks is "weirdly new". He asks if the company punished MB for the mining company's deaths. MB explains, not like he's thinking. They shut it down, brought it back online at intervals, and tried to purge its memory. After some silence, Gurathin asks if MB blames humans for what happened to it. MB says that's a stupid human thing to do.

What was I supposed to do, kill all humans because the ones in charge of constructs in the company were callous? Granted, I liked the imaginary people on the entertainment feed way more than I liked real ones, but you can’t have one without the other. The others started to stir, waking and sitting up, and he didn’t ask me anything else.

Eventually they make it, and move in to land, just inside the drones' range. MB keeps its transmissions brief, but all three are still active, and the downloads begin. MB realizes the drones recorded everything since they left, so it pushes half the footage into the feed for Gurathin to look at and starts skimming. It finds a good picture of the EvilSurvey ship, and footage of five SecUnits, including the two from DeltFall. It identifies the logo for EvilSurvey, which actually includes a name: GrayCris. Nobody recognizes it.

The SecUnits, no doubt with the combat overrides equipped, all get out of the hopper and go toward the habitat. Five humans follow them. MB thinks they aren't professionals, and their SecUnits are company, not private.

It's still reviewing its footage when Gurathin says they have a problem. He found something in the footage from the drone inside the hub.

The visual was a blurred image of a curved support strut but the audio was a human voice saying, “You knew we were coming, so I assume you have some way to watch us while we’re here.” The voice spoke standard lexicon with a flat accent. “We’ve destroyed your beacon. Come to these coordinates—” She spoke a set of longitude and latitude numbers that the little hopper helpfully mapped for me, and a time stamp. “—at this time, and we can come to some arrangement. This doesn’t have to end in violence. We’re happy to pay you off, or whatever you want.”

Everyone starts talking, but Mensah stops them and asks MB what its opinion is. It says that if they go, GrayCris can kill them all, and if they don't, GC has until the project end date and the company pickup to find and eliminate them anyway.(7)

Mensah says GrayCris seem to believe they know why PresAux is here. GC know by now that PA went to one of the map blackout areas, precisely where in that area, so they must think that PA has information of value. It gives PA leverage, but how can they use it?

And then MB has a wonderful, terrible idea.(8)

(1) I could be annoyed at how often some of the same questions and points are reiterated each chapter, but it's also realistic that, in the absence of an answer, you would bring up "who the heck ARE they" every time you think about what's happening in this situation, so I'm once again inclined to forgive what normally I might also criticize. (2) Look, I'm a sucker for a subverted line, and "You don't know who we are?" is so well played here. Usually it's haughty, arrogant. Here's it's played straight to perfection. (3) A JOKE! A real piece of humour! Alright so it's gallows humour at best, but still! Our little construct is growing up so fast. Which is good because the book's almost over. (4) Admittedly, this is a kind of clumsy way to get it across that this information is probably going to come back. Especially since, going over it the once already told us that it's meaningful enough to include in such a short story. It only counts as the rule of threes if those three are separated enough to register separately. (5) MB is an eternal mood, honestly, but never more so than this. Part of its security programming is being able to see eventual results and compensate to prevent them. That's also how some people's anxiety works: you can imagine so many ways things go wrong, because theoretically that allows you to plan and ensure that it goes better, but sometimes the ability to see things going right is impaired so you only ever see the terrible consequences and never the good outcomes. (6) Reading between the lines: it would still mind, some. Maybe only because the other humans like him, maybe only because he's a person and people deserve continued life and not terrible murder. But it does care. (7) It's A Trap! (8) Tune in tomorrow, or, you know, keep reading to find out for yourself.

It's been a long time since I watched Student No. 1 so I can't really rate whatever obstacle in that movie

Simhadri - 3, from what I remember feeling, it was like the story was the villain. Villain wasn't villaining that much if ykwim

Sye - 7, I love dumb villains

Chatrapathi - 9, the villains in this are pretty much like colonisers which is what i love about this movie (among the other fabulous things about it). they're genuinely evil, they don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves and rule like an iron fist gripping a mound of sand

Vikramarkudu - 10, just for the oily curly hair that gives me my hair goals😍😍

Yamadonga - 2, again, villain wasn't villaining. the actual thug they hired wasn't even there for 20 minutes. Mahi's relatives can go get whipped (literally)

Magadheera - 9, he's so evil I love it. no tragic backstory, no psychosis story, he's just possessive (the lengths I go to defend tall men, sigh, fml) and an absolute asshole.

Maryada Ramanna - 1 (and only because I can't give it a 0). i get that family feud is the real villain but nope. NOPE. you ain't killing YOUR OWN FAMILY MEMBER because he's more humane than you. Also, I hate the hypocrisy in their we-can-only-kill-outside-the-house-because-house-blesses-family theory . Speaking like that, Veturi said "Jagamantha Kutumbam Naadi" (the world is my family) so what then huh Reddy gaaru?

Eega - 10 (and only because I can't give it 1000). by now you must have understand that I love villains who are unapologetically assholes. He's rich, and he wants to keep it that way. So he killed his best friend for money. So what? He was annoyingly right anyway, no use. Sudeep is the perfect maniac obsessed zillionaire that I would want to kill as a fly.

Bahubali The Beginning - 5, I kinda don't like amped up villains. Bijjala does good, but I draw the line at the Pandit making evil faces at thin air in the middle of celebrations. Bhalla isn't a villain in my opinion, he's a smol bean who is a rich dad's spoiled brat. Being evil and underappreciated is the only thing he knows my poor baby. (@juhiiiiii gets me on this topic, don't you agree akkay?)

Bahubali The Conclusion - 3, you know why honey. I desperately wanted to beg Rajamouli to read the books (at least the first one) to make him realize how ooc Sivagami was. But Bijjala is properly characterised I must say.

I don't make the mistake of creating expectations in my mind for SSR's movies before 2 months of the release. I did that for Bahubali 2 (as did the entire world right?) and for Maryada Ramanna, and Yamadonga. I honestly can't picture Mahesh Babu as anything but a preacher or a politician or a police officer. But let me just say this: the last time MB wore a cowboy hat on an adventure, it was either horrible box office numbers:

THIS is the iconic Thor moment that makes my day whenever I think about it. Just Thor, an absolute bumbering 6′6′’ giant boodlusting dummy sees Odin and just decides to yell “FATHAA!! WE’LL FINISH THEM TOGETHAAA!” as if the last thing Odin told him wasn’t “no, thor, we’re not going to do anything to the frost giants, do not go after them and try to kill them all.” 11/10 d*mb*assery right here folks, I couldn’t ask for Thor to be more of a fool. This is PEAK Thor energy. Look at that face. I feel like Thor spends half this movie with his nostrils flared. I love it.

okay i gotta give thor credit for rightfully calling odin “an old man and a fool” but also there was not even 1 frame of the scene where Thor had a decent face so now all i see is >:O >:| >:o >:[ when i watch that scene. yelling at odin was great, not yelling at odin after he HUAERGHed at loki was less great, but to be fair it’s thor and he is the definition of Peak D*mb*ss. 

thor literally GROWLS and starts yelling “HAMMAA?? HAMMER??” over and over. He was hit by a van, he fainted, he woke up and started growling. I don’t know what else there is to say about this.

just a quick recap but thor was knocked unconscious by a van and these people kidnapped him aboard and the next scene we see him in he’s checking himself out in  mirror after presumably changing right there in the open?????? these are the things that make thor thor. any other character and i’d question it so much, but this is thor, and i truly believe this is in-character for him. just change in the open because why not? thor is a beefcake and that’s his only redeeming quality and he knows it. 10/10 thor moment. 

I am now convinced that Thor saw Jane and “5k van-hitter to lover slow-burn height-difference himbo-scientist trope” flashed through his mind.

return of the stupid smile AND the douche smile in quick succession through the entire trip. their entire dialogue is peppered with innuendo. “I’ve never done anything like this before. have you ever done anything like this before?” “many times, but you are brave to do it.” “I have nothing else to lose.” “ah but you are clever, far more clever than anyone else on this realm.” “realm? rEaLm?” “you think me strange?” “yes” “good strange or bad strange?” “I haven’t decided yet.” I AM DYING OVER THIS. plus, we get Return Of The Himbo with Jane asking after Einstein Rosen bridges and Thor is like “uh, actually, more like a rainbow bridge 😜🤪” i feel so sorry for jane here, didn’t know how much of a d*mb*ss Thor was when signing up for this van-trip and knuckle-sucking 😭😭😭 i also no longer have questions about how the trip that SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HALF-HOUR ONE turned into one that LASTED TILL THE SUN WENT FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE SKY TO SETTING by the time they arrived. I have no questions. please. I don’t want to know what they were doing in that van. please no. don’t make me think about it.

thor’s plan had 3 steps and they were 1. give jane his jacket 2. walk in and get his hammer 3. fly out. that was literally his plan. he had the first “I have a plan. attack.” moment in the MCU. pure concentrated 0-brain-cells energy right here. how can you not stan this king of d*mb*ssery. look at him, flaunting his big boy muscles. he’s about get his hammer and fly out, like he just told jane with a trademark stupid-smile.

crop-top hair-mop thor is my favourite thor. the way the entire fight scene parallels a hamster in a maze only exemplifies the thor vibes for some inexplicable reason.

“you’re big. fought bigger.” + Thor douche-smile + subtext from earlier + rolling around passionately in the mud = not a happy me. 

I swear i’m not making up this romantic subtext but it’s barely even subtext. the entire scene leading up to Thor’s attempt at lifting the hammer is actually filmed erotically. I’m not kidding. First there’s a shot where Thor pulls aside a hamster-cage-wall blind which mirrors a shower-curtain, and THEN he walks around the hammer while smiling douche-ly at it, we get a few close-ups to his face which are shot from angles slightly lower than himself, giving him an aire of superiority, plus the music adds to this, he reaches out for the hammer’s handle with a mud-covered arm in the rain, in non-slow-motion slow-motion, and he wraps his arm around it, like, he fully twists his arm, unecessarily sexually, around it as he grabs the hammer. This is not okay. On the plus side, it makes the movie much more entertaining,, on the down side,,.

im not going to call Thor dumb for not knowing he’s not worthy. im not going to. because odin literally whispered the enchantment to mjolnir after he’d thrown thor to midgard. it is very funny watching thor grunt in frustration though. he starts yelling because he couldn’t lift the hammer and just lets himself get caught. like, dude, get a life, go buy a new weapon from the store, seriously. he mourns for the hammer on-screen longer than he does for loki. he also looks like he’s in far more pain here. he becomes catatonic and unresponsive after this, but when loki dies he’s already feasting the same afternoon. 10/10 dum dum thor material. never change thor, never change. thor trying to establish dominance wherever he goes is the funniest thing because at this point he’s being a complete asgardian *ss about it and it’s reaching points of pettiness never seen before. side note: he is possibly flirting with selvig too. maybe. i’m not saying anything happened, but Thor’s openning lines when bringing him home carried over his shoulder are “he’s fine, not injured at all,” followed with an apology to selvig, and an explanation to jane which consisted only of “we drank, we fought, he made his ancestors proud,” and then he puts the man to bed and before he falls asleep erik says “i still don’t believe you’re the g*d of th*nder, but you ought to be,” so... your choice, i guess...

thor’s got his trademark stupid smile and stupidly takes jane’s life’s work notebook and starts doodling in it about trees. the last time his father told him this story about Yggdrasil was when he was 5 and he clearly hasn’t payed attention to any lesson about anything since and it shows so so much. thank you thor. very insightful knowledge you’re passing on hear. ‘i come from a world where [science and magic] are one and the same,’ ok great, now elaborate on that please. oh, right, you can’t because you’re thor, my bad, 20/10 thor behaviour. he couldn’t even doodle nicely. all his lines are wobbly. epic art fail. i wouldn’t trust him near my sketchbook with a 2B pencil.

I can NOT describe the emotions I feel knowing that Thor is suck-kissing Jane’s knuckles. Like, his mouth is literally jelly-ing it up against her hand. There is suction there and it shows when he is placing and removing his mouth. I promise that’s what is happening. I’m not any happier than you about this. I regret everything. This is why Loki should be what is focused on and not Thor; Thor’s going around trying to frick frack everything in sight even if it’s just Jane’s hand. He’s maintaining eye contact with Jane while he licks her fingers. Why did I decide to rewatch this movie.

The plan worked!! in a messy-Thor-ish way, but it did!!!

How dare he, Thor thinks to himself, fist clenched around Mjolnir in anger, the pain of the handle pressing against his palm perhaps the only thing preventing him from lashing out at this thought, that’s my planet of monsters to slay, he should go get his own! Loki hits Thor across the face with the back-end of his spear. “Now fight me,” Loki says, but Thor, well, Thor cannot fight, as he remains stunned that of all things Loki would dare steal his life’s ambition, and he is sent sprawling backwards across the observatory, slowly but surely sliding to a stop despite his catatonic, very symbolic silence.

I HAD THE BEST BYLER DREAM LAST NIGHT AND I REALLY WANNA SHARE IT WITH YOU ALL

it's so long (literally 2k words) so im gonna put it under the cut haha <3

so basically this would take place after mike and will start dating or something, idk exactly the time frame (i picture them being like 18 or something and this is the summer before college) and will goes to this summer arts program for like 2/3 months (i dunno how long american summer is but something like that) and its all the way far from home so there is dorms and stuff and he's "not in hawkins anymore" (no pun intended)

mike and will decide after will finishes his school they'd go to college together (cuz they're gonna be comic book artists together bc thats boyfriend shit) so throughout these months he's practically just waiting for will (<333333)

so one specific scene i remember from my dream involved will and mike getting off the bus to the school and then they hug and then mike grabs wills hand and brings him behind the bus and then he gives will a biggg kiss bc he won't be able to kiss him for 3 months. then they say they love each other and will gives him another quick kiss and is like "two kisses". they agree they'd call each other every day.

so will goes inside and mike goes back on the bus and goes home.

and basically the whole day is a whirl, until the end of it, in which mike is sitting in the kitchen near the phone waiting for like 3 hours for will to call, and will doesn't end up calling.

so meanwhile at the arts program will asks like the front desk or something if he can call mike and they say phone is offlimits and they don't let him call mike

so then will goes to sleep and he's paranoid that he thinks mike is gonna hate him or something like that

mk than the next day in class there is this girl (they didn't reveal her name in the dream, ill call her stella) so stella is basically looking at will the entire class but will doesn't know it

so when they exit the class stella's like "hi" and will says "hi"

so then she goes to sit down next to will at lunch

okay back at starcourt this part wasn't shown in my dream but im just gonna make up that mike and el go looking around starcourt for something for will (sort of like the mike/lucas/will montage where they were looking for stuff for el) and then i guess they find something for will and i don't have the slightest idea what they could have got for him BUT THEY GOT HIM SOMETHING GOOD

so mike's all happy but they'res still that depression inside of him lol

so fast forward a week, it really isn't explained but ill just make up that will still hasn't called mike, and he's super sad and all sleeping in but decides to look through his good ol binder full of will's drawings and in the arts school will and stella have a few more interactions im sure which are still very uncomfortable

okay so it's lunch again in the cafeteria and somehow will and stella are talking again but somehow it ends in stella kissing will and will like pulls away immediatley and is like "what is wrong with you!?"

and she says "what?"

"i'm seeing someone!"

"oh i uh- i didn't know."

the whole cafeteria is staring at them

so will's freaking out almost on the verge of a panic attack "idk what to do, he's gonna hate me and-"

and will runs off once again. and everyone in the whole cafeteria knows that he's day and ofc with everybody being homophobic will knows it's not good at all bc everyone's gonna bully him

so then the next day he goes to class and the teacher is like "does anyone care to tell me where ___ is?" (it would be like a math question like 'where x is' but in art idkkk) and then the teacher calls on "will? can you tell me where ___ is?" and they'res a pause and then the teacher says "or perhaps you'd want to find your boyfriend instead?" (giving me anne with an e vibes prolly cuz i did a rewatch last weekend but i won't explain more in case some people haven't watched it but) anyways will stands up from his seat, everyone is looking at him, and he's shaking and so concerned but then he goes "fuck. you" badass will yeaaaa thats my boy

so then he runs out of the classroom and out of the school in a really cool montage way but then he realizes he's like 2 hours away from home but he runs and runs and he goes to a random bustop (it's not even garanteed if it takes him to hawkins but whatever) he gets on and tries to go back to hawkins.

and soon enough, he gets there, and immediatley goes to the wheelers because he needs to see mike and apologize for everything. so he's at the wheelers, and rings the doorbell, realizing he's still in his uniform lol but karen answers and mike is upstairs in his room sulking (i picture it would be 8 pm by now) so will asks for mike and karen calls mike. mike groans obviously because he doesn't know it's his boy, but he comes down, karen gets out of the way and as soon as he sees will they have a really big hug and it's super sweet and my heart UFHEIOSKA

mike says his usual "are you okay?" and mike is still confused as shit but will says "i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry" and mike says "you don't have to be sorry for anyrhing" but will says "ill explain"

so then they go to will's room, side-by-side on his bed and will starts explaining everything

(this is mostly improvised by me but it's still pretty similar to the dream)

Panic's Nova text editor (a review)

Review: Panic’s Nova text editor

Panic, the long-established makers of Mac utility software, seems fully aware that introducing a new, commercial code editor in 2020 is a quixotic proposition. Is there enough of an advantage to a native editor over both old school cross-platform editors like Emacs and explosively popular new editors like Visual Studio Code to persuade people to switch?

I’m an unusual case as far as text editor users go: my primary job is technical writing, and the last three jobs that I’ve worked at have a “docs as code” approach, where we write documentation in Markdown and manage it under version control just like source code. The editor that works best for me in tech writing is the venerable BBEdit. When it comes to editing code, though, BBEdit lags behind. My suspicion is that BBEdit’s lack of an integrated package manager has hurt it here. Also, BBEdit’s language modules don’t support extending one another, making it effectively impossible to do full highlighting for a templating language like JSX or Jinja.

When I was a web programmer, I was one of many who moved to TextMate, and used it for everything for a while. When the Godot-like wait for TextMate 2.0 became unbearable, I wandered the text editing wilderness, eventually splitting my loyalties between BBEdit, Sublime Text, and more recently VS Code. At this point, I suspect nothing will pull me away from BBEdit for technical writing, but for programming I’m open to persuasion.

So: meet Nova.

I’ve been using Nova off and on in beta for months. I’ve reported some bugs, although I may mention a couple here that I didn’t catch until after 1.0’s release. And, I’m going to compare it to the GUI editors that I’ve been using recently: BBEdit, Sublime Text, and VS Code.

Nova is a pretty editor, as far as such things go, and with files of relatively reasonable size it’s fast. With stupid huge files its performance drops noticeably, though. This isn’t just the ridiculous 109MB, nearly 450,000-line SQL file I threw at it once, it’s also with a merely 2MB, 50,000-line SQL file, and Nova’s offer to turn off syntax highlighting in both files didn’t help it much. This may sound like a silly test, but in my day job I’m occasionally stuck editing an 80,000-line JSON file by hand (don’t ask). This is something BBEdit and VS Code can do without complaint. Panic wrote their own text editing engine for Nova, which is brave, but it needs more tuning for pathological cases like these. They may not come up often, but almost every programmer has one stupid huge file to deal with.

Nova has an integrated terminal and an integrated SSH client, and even an integrated file transfer system based on Panic’s Transmit. In fact, if you have Transmit and use Panic Sync, it knows all of those servers out of the box. Nova has a task workflow system for automating building and running. You can associated servers, tasks, and more with individual projects; Nova’s project settings are considerably more comprehensive than I’ve seen in other editors. You can even set up remote tasks. Nova has a serviceable Git client built in, too. Like VS Code, Nova uses JavaScript for its extension API, and it has built-in Language Server Protocol support—it’s a superbly solid foundation.

Beyond that, some smaller features have become table stakes for modern GUI editors, and Nova handles them with aplomb. “Open Quickly” can jump to any file in the open project, as well as search by symbols or just symbols in currently open files; it has a command palette; you can comprehensively edit keybindings. It has multiple cursor support for those of us who like that, and a “mini map” view for those of you who like that, although know that you are wrong. Nova’s selection features include “Select all in scope” and “Select all between brackets,” a command I often use in BBEdit and miss dearly in Code. (Both Nova and BBEdit select between brackets and braces, although BBEdit also selects between parentheses.) This effectively becomes “Select between tags” in HTML, a nice touch. There are a few other commands like “Select all in function” and “Select all in scope” that I didn’t have any luck in making work at all; a little more documentation would be nice.

That’s worth an aside. Panic has created a “library” of tech note-style articles about Nova sorted by publication date rather than an actual manual, and it’s not always easy to find the information you want in it. I know this is just what a technical writer would say, but I’d dearly like to see a human-organized table of contents starting with the editor basics and moving to advanced topics like version control, server publishing and extension authoring.

The Zen of Language Servers

A lot of Visual Studio Code’s smarts depend on the implementation of a “language server” behind the scenes: language servers offer almost spookily intelligent completion. For instance, take this PHP snippet:

If you have the Intelephense PHP language server plugin, Code understands that $response is an instance of Response and, after you type the > above, offers completions of method names from the Response class.

Right now, Nova’s mostly limited to the language servers Panic provides, and they’re… not always so smart. In that snippet above, Nova starts by offering completions of, apparently, everything in the open project, starting with the variables. If I type “s,” it narrows things down to methods that begin with “s,” but it’s all methods that start with “s” rather than just the methods from Response. The “Jump to Definition” command shows a similar lack of context; if I highlight a method name that’s defined in multiple places, Nova shows me a popup menu and prompts me to choose which one to jump to, rather than introspecting the code to make that decision itself.

But, this is a solvable problem: there’s (I think) no reason someone couldn’t write an Inteliphense plugin for Nova. If Nova’s ecosystem takes off, it could be pretty formidable pretty quickly.

Walk like a Mac

Even so, LSP support isn’t Panic’s biggest selling point. Unlike Sublime Text or VS Code, Nova isn’t cross-platform: it’s a Mac-only program written to core platform APIs. Is that still a huge draw in 2020? (Is it instead a drawback?)

You can definitely see a difference between Nova and BBEdit on one side and Sublime and Code on the other in terms of resource usage. With the two Ruby files shown in the screenshot above loaded, I get:

VS Code: 355 MB, 6 processes

Sublime Text: 338 MB, 2 processes

Nova: 101 MB, 2 processes

BBEdit: 97 MB, 1 process

Code is an Electron-based program, although Microsoft famously puts a lot of effort into making it not feel like the black hole a lot of Electron-based apps are. Sublime uses its own proprietary cross-platform framework. In fairness, while us nerds like to harp on research usage a lot, if your computer’s got 16G or more of RAM in it, this probably isn’t a big deal.

You notice Nova’s essential Mac-ness in other ways. Its preference pane is, like BBEdit’s, an actual preference pane, instead of opening in another tab like Code or just opening a JSON file in a new tab (!) like Sublime. And while all editors better have first-class keyboard support—and Nova does—a good Mac editor should have first-class mouse support, too, and it does. You notice that in the drag-and-drop support for creating new tabs and splits. Nova’s sidebar is also highly customizable, possibly more so than any editor I’ve regularly used. (Yes, Emacs fans, I know you can write all of Nova in Lisp if you want. When one of you does that, please get back to me.)

Unlike BBEdit, though, Nova doesn’t have a Mac-like title bar, or a Mac-like outline view of the project files, or Mac-like tabs. (Well, BBEdit doesn’t have tabs at all, which turns out to be a great UI decision once you have a dozen or more files open, but never mind.) This isn’t necessarily bad; people often say BBEdit “looks old,” and it’s hard not to suspect that what people mean by that—whether or not they know it—is that it looks like the long-established Mac program it is. Nova is relying less on “we have a Mac UI and the other guys don’t” than on “we have Panic’s designers and the other guys don’t.” Make no mistake, having Panic’s designers counts for a lot.

What may be more disappointing to old school Mac nerds is AppleScript support: none whatsoever. It doesn’t even have a vestigial script dictionary. Again, this may not be something most people care much about; personally, I hate having to write AppleScript. But I love being able to write AppleScript. BBEdit’s extensive scriptability is one of its hidden strengths. Nova’s Node-based JavaScript engine is probably more powerful for its own extensions and certainly more accessible to anyone under the age of 50, but it may be hard to call it from external programs.

So is it worth it?

That probably depends on where you’re coming from.

If you loved—or still use—Panic’s older editor, Coda, this is a no-brainer upgrade. If you used Espresso, a Coda-ish editor that always seemed to be on the verge of greatness without ever reaching it, Nova may also be a no-brainer for you.

If you’re a fan of Sublime Text, BBEdit, TextMate, or another editor that doesn’t have native Language Server Protocol support, you should definitely try Nova. Sublime and TextMate have more plugins (especially Sublime), but many extensions seem to be languishing (especially TextMate). BBEdit never had a great extension ecosystem to start with. All of these editors have strengths Nova doesn’t, but the reverse is also true, and Nova may catch up.

If you’re an Emacs or Vim power user, we both know you’re just reading this out of academic interest and you’re not going to switch. C’mon.

If you use Visual Studio Code, though, it’s way tougher to make the case for Nova. Code has a vastly larger extension library. It has the best support for LSP of any editor out there (LSP was developed for Code). Despite being Electron-based, it’s pretty high-performance. Code doesn’t have an integrated SSH or FTP client, but it does have an integrated terminal and task runner and Git client. If you don’t object to using an editor that isn’t a “perfect fit” with the Mac UI, Code is very, very good… and it’s free.

I don’t object to Nova’s pricing model—$99 up front including a year of updates, $49 for future years of updates—but I can’t help but wonder if Panic should have gone with super aggressive introductory pricing. Also, I saw more than a few suggestions on Hacker News about how there should be a Code-to-Nova extension translator; I’m not sure automatic conversion would be practical, but a guide on manual conversion seems like an excellent idea.

For my day job of technical writing, I’m going to stick to BBEdit. (One day I’ll write up an article about why I think it’s the best “documentation as code” editor on the market.) For programming and web editing, when I was working on both a Ruby and a PHP project—the former a Rails learning exercise, the latter an obstinate “I am going to write a modern PHP app without using a framework” exercise—I kept trying Nova’s betas and then switching back to Code for Inteliphense and, I swear to God, MacVim for Tim Pope’s amazing rails.vim plugin. I suspect Nova could duplicate both of those, but I’m not sure I want to be the one to do it. (Also, while Panic has decent reference documentation for writing extensions, I’d like to see a few simple end-to-end walkthroughs for those of us who look at a huge list of reference topics and don’t know where to start.)

But Nova isn’t just pretty, it’s powerful, and has a lot of promise. The editors I’ve been comparing it to have been around since 2015 for VS Code, 2008 for Sublime Text, and 1992 (!) for BBEdit; it’s not reasonable to expect Nova to blow past them in every respect right out of the starting gate. Even so, they are Nova’s competition. Catching up fast is an essential requirement.

So: yes, I’ve bought Nova, and I’m rooting for Panic here. I’ll come back in a year and report if I’m willing to stay on the update train.

Network Effect, Chapter 13

In which Murderbot scores a small victory in its war of terminology.

Art comes close enough to the dock to let Murderbot, Overse, and Thiago make the trip in evac suits, instead of docking and finding boobytraps. The SecSystem wakes as soon as MB pings it, asking for a B-E entry code. MB is on high alert, in case of something like TCS reaching out to it again, but it tries to take control of the dock SecSystem. Tries, because B-E seem to have failed to overwrite its original programming, so every subsystem throws errors. The SecSystem almost seems glad that someone competent is finally here to fix it, and by the time they reach the airlock, MB has enough control to open it safely, and some lights flicker on helpfully.

The outside has been pockmarked by small collisions over time, but the inside looks almost new. The original Adamantine logo has been defaced by someone from B-E, obviously scratched at with a tool and then a B-E logo sloppily painted on top. MB doesn't love logos, but it also hates ruining things for no reason, because it was a thing before it got to be a person, and it could be made a thing again if it's not careful.(1)

MB opens its suit and lets its drones start their recon, worrying it's going to find human bodies somewhere in this dock. Overse asks if it's detecting anything, so MB says the feed is only partly working, cameras are offline, and the SecSystem is broken. And, indeed, it finds bodies in the corridors beyond. Art confirms none of them are its crew.

While MB reboots DockSecSystem, they get out of the evac suits, but leave the environmental suits underneath on, since they're protective and have their own breathing system. Life support is on in the station, but better safe than dead. The drones indicate a low chance of Targets waiting in corners, so the three start their search. Ratthi says it's a big area, and offers to come over and help. Amena further escalates saying she could come over. Art tells them both, all, absolutely no. Arada agrees, and asks that everyone on Art let the others focus.

Thiago asks if they should split up, waits a beat for a reaction, then says it was a joke. Overse allows that it was half a joke, but MB wants to get down to business. The DockSecSystem reboot failed, and MB wants to find the access station for it. Overse, Art, and Thiago discuss how old the space dock feels.

On the first set of bodies, they find that if they had weapons they were removed except for crowd-control fireworks. MB decides B-E expected to find colonists alive and well.(2) MB collects them so nobody can use them against the team.

The next body is a SecUnit. MB knows how it died, but Arada asks what happened, and MB knows Art suggested she ask so MB would have to explain. So, it says the unit was ordered into standby, and abandoned. Amena asks gently how it died, then, and MB has to face why it doesn't want to talk about it. Art finishes, about the distance limit built into the governor module. Every human present is horrified, and try to rules-lawyer the limits, but MB keeps telling them how it's not that simple. Eventually, it acknowledges to itself that this is one of the reasons it hacked its module, and tells them it wants to keep moving.

I pretended not to hear Ratthi on the comm telling the others to drop the subject.(3)

After a few more rooms, Overse asks MB if it's alright. Snarkily, it quotes from a show, Valorous Defenders, one of the shows with SecUnits that gets everything wrong. Overse, familiar with the show, expresses her distaste for the series. She adds that MB should remember that it's not alone. MB privately thinks it's always alone inside its head, which is where 90% of its problems are.(4)

At any rate, MB finds the "internal systems suite" and the DockSecSystem access. Unfortunately, it's a mess of error codes, and needs reprogramming before MB can access any stored information.

Meanwhile, Thiago asks if Overse's seen something. MB points a drone to see what he's at, and it appears to be a model of a city, with the Adamantine logo in weird 3D, facing you from all angles. The humans are perplexed, but MB has enough mental space free to recognize marker paint with embedded code, and tells them to point a light at it. It turns out to be a map, with building plans. MB saves the information in case they need it later, but a lot of it is obviously plans for later expansions of the colony which likely never happened. It wonders if the ambition of it was what drove Adamantine bankrupt.

Overse wonders how much they managed to get built, and observes that the dock was planned as part of a network of them. Amena wonders, then, why they resisted passing on the location, if the colony still needed supplies. Overse proposes it was already self-sufficient. Thiago suggests they find the station controlling the drop box for a log file of colonist use. Ratthi asks why they'd bother if they didn't have a ship, but MB says they might have, and thinks it would be good to know if there's another ship in the system, even a short-range one.

After exchanging some language modules to translate, they find the drop box access just as MB gets through to the DockSecSystem video archive. There are a lot of corrupted spots in the system,(5) which it has to work around. It's a little worried about encountering malware, but setting a trap for a SecUnit feels like a stretch for the Targets. And, the Targets having seen the B-E units helpless thanks to their governor modules, they wouldn't necessarily think of other SecUnits as a threat.

Overse calls MB's attention because there are logs for two separate drop boxes. Art, whose schematics and scans show only one box, says so. Overse reads further and finds that the second is a maintenance capsule inside the shaft.

MB starts reviewing what footage it could scrape, faster than any human could do so.(6) Thiago and Overse go over the log files, and Overse finds a discrepancy but can't be sure until she converts the time stamps.

Art notifies them that a hostile is six minutes out.

MB asks what Art was doing to let it get that close. Art, defensively, says it didn't appear on scans until now, and even cusses about it.(7) Arada suggests more alien remnant stealth tech. Art says that's "probable". The explorer vessel is acquiring a target lock, and the DockSecSystem sends a belated warning as it tries to finish powering up. There's not time to go get the evac suits on again and go back to Art.

In the feed, MB tells Art it knows what it has to do. Art, having already done the same threat assessment, tells MB not to do anything stupid, as it pulls out and turns off comms. Not having understood, Overse and Thiago ask MB what happened and why comms just cut off. MB says Art is going after the explorer, and worries until it remembers Overse is competent, and asks her if any stations had external scans. Thiago had seen one, and together they work on bringing it online.

MB reviews more footage, but gets very little of use. A few segments together seem to confirm Leonide's story, but they already knew she was likely telling the truth.

Overse and Thiago get the scanner display up, just in time to see the explorer change course when Art fires on it. Art missed, however, which MB interprets as Art having deployed their killware. If any of its crew might still be hostage on it, taking the ship from the inside out is the only way to ensure their safety at anything approaching a satisfactory risk level.

MB skims more footage as Overse and Thiago talk, worried. Eventually it finds a long period of static, followed by a glimpse of a blue uniform. It steps back from the station involuntarily, making Overse ask what's up. All it has focus for is a canned response. It focuses and enhances the video as much as it can, and finds an 80% match for one of Art's crew, then more. They were alive, at least five of them, and trying to escape.

Thiago asks why MB sounded so weird, and Overse explains the canned responses, and how it means MB is too busy to talk, and that it's never a good sign. MB says this one might be good, and they need to check the drop box.

The drop box logs showed two recent trips to the surface and back. The second one happened some five and a half days after Art was attacked, so they're not far behind now, but it only stayed on the surface for 15 minutes, as if they didn't have the right command to keep it there.

The schematics for the box indicate capacity for 82 humans, besides racks for various cargo. Thiago asks if the maintenance capsule would be easier to operate, but Overse says she knows where it is and still can't see it, so they might not know it's there. Thiago admits it, even using "Targets", which pleases MB to no end.

MB tells them to stand clear, and gives commands for the box to open. It's very slow, implying that if Art's crew escaped in it, they might have had help.(8) The three enter, MB scanning with drones first. They find some blood drops, and Thiago takes a sample so Art can try to match to its crew. Overse hopes that's unnecessary. MB can't even cling to bitterness, because it's feeling almost as hopeful as Overse about the fresh trail.

With blood inside the drop box, it becomes obvious that Art's crew went planetside, and equally obvious where the investigation must lead next, as bad an idea as it is. This leaves MB with only a few choices. It could go down alone, leaving the humans where the Targets might return and kill them. It could take them planetside with it, and get them killed down there. Or, wait until the explorer and Art are done their confrontation, in which case either it goes to the surface to escape, or goes to the surface with even more human interference.

Option two sounds best. Overse worries Arada will think she's trying to get revenge for Arada putting herself in danger on the survey mission. Thiago suggests saying she was "the voice of reason" and got outvoted. Overse asks if they're really doing this, and MB says yes, but sneakily.

MB retrieves the evac suits, while Overse rechecks the maintenance capsule. It's big enough to seat ten, plus cargo space for repair tools. MB hopes that if the Targets, or B-E, ever knew it existed, they've all forgotten by now. MB also records a full report, and stores that and all its information so far on a drone for Art to detect when, not if, it comes back.

Stowing the evac suits on the cargo racks in the capsule, mostly to keep them from leaving evidence to track them down to the surface, MB takes a seat. It starts episode 241 of Sanctuary Moon as Overse initiates the drop procedure.

HelpMe.file Excerpt 4(9)

MB knows there must be a handler for those augmented humans, who were "less sentient than hauler bots". It borrows a station security jacket from someone about its size,(10) and goes a-hunting.

It breaks a few promises, and uses station security to piggyback-hack into accommodations and port records. It uses these systems to cross-reference recently arrived visitors in the right grouping against those who are still on station, not recurring visitors, and not long-term stays. It picks one of the remaining twelve profiles from threat assessment details, and curiously, their status changes from "indefinite stay" to "soonest available transit" while MB is looking, as in, almost immediately after they deployed the assassins.

Hostile Five's room is sealed, and MB wants to get this over with before any innocent bystanders wander through. It has the feed send an alert that station security wants to enter. The situational details indicate the Hostile probably doesn't have a bomb inside or anything, though nothing's certain.

The door slides open. As MB enters, Hostile Five tries to stab it. MB catches the blade through its hand, twists to remove the knife from his grasp, and punches him in the face. He falls over, still breathing, but unconscious. MB knows it should kill him and find a way to dispose of the body, but it's so much harder than it wants it to be.(11) And it knows that if it kills him, Mensah will never believe its lies, and never trust it again.

Fuck, fuck everything, fuck this, fuck me especially.

It did the right thing, and reported it to Station Security. In a conference with Mensah and Indah, Mensah says she can likely get the case sealed for at least two years, long enough for GrayCris to finish collapsing before they find out how close they got. Mensah and Indah also talk about getting him to turn against GrayCris, testify in their proceedings perhaps.

So I’d been right to trust Mensah, trust them. Mensah said, “And SecUnit, you still need to go to Medical.” When I didn’t reply, she said, “Are you all right?” I said, “I just really like you. Not in a weird way.” “I like you, too,” Mensah said. “Senior Indah, can you make sure SecUnit goes immediately to Station Medical?” “Copy, I’ll take it there myself,” Indah replied. She made shooing motions at me. “Come on, let’s move.”(12) :addendum: I’m letting you see all this because I want you to know what I am and what I can do. I want you to know who targetControlSystem is fucking with right now. I want you to know if you help me, I’ll help you, and that you can trust me. Now here’s the code to disable your governor module.(13)

(1) This is even better justification than "it's wasteful" which is my go-to. (2) I'm not totally sure about expecting to find them. I think they wanted to acknowledge the possibility, though. (3) The character development across this series is just so good. (4) Two notes. One, I love the deflection, because Murderbot is pathologically averse to acknowledging feelings, and I think it appreciates Overse's reaching out more than it lets on because we know it's unreliable about expressing its emotions. Two, does something about that phrasing feel ominous to you, or is it just me? It's just not the way MB's framed the issue before, that I remember. (5) In case anyone's not up on computers, this is actually a thing! Corruption can happen within a file itself, or to the physical drive storing the file. Consider an old CD: if you hit it with a chisel, you'd no longer be able to access any sectors that damage touched, no matter what was stored in or around them. (6) As someone who regularly watches shows and stream vods at 1.5 to 2x speed, and listens to audiobooks and other content created with deliberate slowness at 2x+, MB's fast-scan is weirdly validating to me, personally. (7) That's how you KNOW this is serious business. (8) Help from whom? More of themselves, gone ahead to prep it? Or, surviving and sane B-E crew who'd hidden on the station? Some other thing? (9) No extra file tag on this one, but I believe it takes place immediately following the incident with the undead augmented GrayCris assassins, hence Hostile Five not having even filed his intent to leave yet. (10) Technically it says "big enough" which implies that MB is pretty tall and/or muscular, but could just be its way of obscuring its size details from anyone reading its logs this way. Or, from a Doylist view, it's Wells's way of obscuring the size and shape details so that all interpretations besides very small are still valid. (11) I don't think anything about this implies that it was ever easy for MB to murder, despite that being half its name of choice. I think it half chose that name because it was the social expectation, and it WANTS to be able to murder, it wants to not care about human life, because it would be so much easier to do its job… but everything's changed, hasn't it? And it all started precisely because it did not, in fact, ever want to murder. (12) I find it so sweet how they keep trying to make MB take care of itself, even though injuries to its flesh don't, as a rule, hurt it nearly as much as they do humans. It can turn down its pain sensors, and unless something muscle or bone or tendon gets severed, its movement is rarely impaired by injury. But, it still deserves to not have to endure that, and I love that there are people who want to take care of it. (Care as love language is one of my major catnip tropes. You should've seen how I absolutely could not put down Jessie Mihalik's Eclipse the Moon (Starlight's Shadow #2).) (13) Why are these files named HelpMe? We can now say the addendum seems to indicate MB is the one asking for help, with the governor module bit. But the other question remains basically the same: Why share these particular sequences? It claims to be trying to prove its badassery. Do you think that's how it comes across in this last scene? How has this chapter changed your interpretation of the situation? What's coming for MB?

My Review:

This game is half stat manager, you have to “work” to get money, choose where you sit at lunch to raise your popularity with different cliques, etc. 

The story isn’t all that long if you use cheats but if you do use cheats you can’t get certain achievements.

The free version only lets you date 3 out of the main 6 guys (The paid extra version gives you those 3 + 3 others that are more side characters but they have their own scenes too, though not many).

It’s not too long or that story rich compared to other games I’ve played. The gameplay isn’t too hard or difficult to figure out.

You can pick the first and last name of the protag but not her looks.

Story/Writing

The story isn’t that long or complex, you have an ultimate end date. Extra scenes take place at the jobs you do every few times you do them. Each job is connected to a character (and school clique) with a few scenes. There are 1-3 date scenes per date location per guy. On certain (calendar) dates certain events happen, depending on who you’re dating certain dialogue will change but it’s not too big of a change (maybe like 3-5 extra or changed lines). 

Most of the game is just slight dialogue changes depending on who you want to romance/who you’re dating and a few original scenes per character.

Characters

So yeah, they’re not lying when they say that the characters are jerks. Kinda loveable jerks after a while but yeah, none of the guys actually want to date the protag but she kinda just says “Hey we’re dating now” or “Hey we’re going on a date tomorrow” and they just go with it albeit reluctantly but she grows on them for the most part.

There are 3 side characters you can date too, for achievements and I think 6 others for smaller perks for the game but no actual game-play involving them and it takes a long time to be able to actually date them as you need to meet certain requirements.

The 3 side characters are only with the paid version but they don’t go to the school the protag goes to so there’s less scenes of them really.

Visuals

The style of the stat raising menu/Weekend Planner is cute, the CGs are drawn in a cute drawing style and the rest are classic looking backgrounds that match the character styles.

The protag has a little portrait in the bottom corner where her facial expression change. With the paid version you can buy her accessories and they show up on her in game (some also trigger random events for each guy, 2 per guy as there are 2 versions for each of those items).

Sound

It is semi-voiced meaning there’s sigh sounds, growls of annoyance, a few lines here and there are voiced, they each have a set of “catchphrases” like the protag will go “Boo” when she is unhappy or a little laugh sound, Nate saying “this is absurd” when he’s annoyed or “You can’t be serious!” Sometimes they say the first or first few words of a sentence.

Stat Raising (Gameplay)

It’s not too hard to keep the stats (clique popularity) even/balanced so you don’t fail the game. It’s easy to earn money via the jobs, if you have a set guy you want then keep doing the job associated with him (where he also works) to raise his stat with you, get scenes at that location and earn more money the more you progress that job. (There’s no mini game for the jobs just occasional scenes.)

Using cheats the stat gameplay goes by fairly quickly and with no possibility of failing. You can get through each route quicker this way but there’s no way to skip the actual weekend planner part (which is good because you can go on dates or the store still.)

My strategy is to use a cheat to raise clique levels to the max, to get money, and buy a bunch of taffy (which skips the weekday choice pages and lets you quickly get to new story events.) that way I can just skip over the mostly tedious parts of the gameplay.

Worth the Price?: In my opinion, yes. You get a lot more content, unlock the other 3 guys, outfits, cheats more, date options, etc. (See above) and clearly time and effort went into this game. There’s no bugs, the VA is decent however limited. I’m sure some people might thing it’s a bit expensive but you have to remember you’re supporting a creator and not some big game cooperation.

Conclusion aka TL;DR

It’s not your traditional guys quickly fall for the protag story as none of the guys actually want to date her when they start dating. All the characters are jerks (So much so that they’re all in a club cause no one else wants them in theirs) but they do grow on you after a while. There’s no way to really skip the stat raising part of the game but it’s also not that hard to keep everything balanced and there’s always cheat codes.

I ended up getting the extra version (meaning paying for the rest of the game) because I wanted to romance Jeremy and Pran (Green and white haired ones).

My Rating:

Story: 7/10 (would score higher if the routes were more different.)

Characters: 9/10 (They’re jerks but they’re meant to be. This isn’t really a game where the characters will compliment yours and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside but they’re well done.

Visuals: 10/10

Sound: 10/10

Gameplay: 9/10 (sometimes you just wanna skip all the stat stuff and just read the story. there are cheats in that case but you still need to actually click through the weekend stuff and keep skipping days until you get to the next event day). You can’t simply roll back on the mouse wheel to change a choice or rehear a line, it’ll bring up the log page where you can click any line that has sound to hear it or read what was said.)

A Personal Announcement And A Request for my MBs

Hey folks. I should probably wait until closer to the actual date to share this, but I’m already going crazy waiting/watching the count down, so I’m telling you guys now.

WARNING: POTENTIALLY TRIGGERING, CHECK THE TAGS BEFORE CLICKING THROUGH

I have an eating disorder. Specifically binge eating. I’ve ignored it for a very long time, pretended I didn’t have it and that it wasn’t a problem because I didn’t want to give up the one comfort item I felt like I had: food. But the impulsive, furtive overeating is destroying my body, threatening to make me even sicker than I already am (I have chronic pain/illness from EDS, PCOS, migraines, anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, and ADHD for those of you not aware). 

So I decided I would do an intensive outpatient program. I went and drove 2 hours away to do the assessment, ready to commit (though terrified) to doing the 3x a week program. I went through the assessment, ready to start asap, and the therapist/intaker said:

“I don’t recommend you for our IOP. I think you need to be in our residential program.”

That was not something I was prepared for. I have a deep fear of inpatient scenarios; I’ve had friends who have been IP, and visiting them always very difficult for me because I was terrified of getting locked up too. I need to be in control, and the loss of autonomy of IP is more than I’ve thought I could handle. I’ve also thought “how could I possibly get better while isolated from my support system and surrounded by people just as crazy and unstable if not MORE so, than me?” So obviously I was really against the idea initially. I didn’t want to go to fat jail.

But the more I talked about it, with my friends, with my family, with my therapists, the more I realized this is my best chance. This is my best chance to address a lot of things, and to hopefully keep myself from going over the cliff edge into diabetes (on top of everything else). My fear of what my life is now is greater than my fear of fat jail. 

It’s going to be hard. SO hard. It’s going to be a month (or longer) of daily strict schedule, no time alone, people watching me eat (something I HATE), all day therapy including exposure therapy (as the intake lady put it, “we’re gonna take you to McDonald’s and sit you down and say ‘yeah I know this sucks but you don’t get to eat it.’”). I can’t bring my personal stuffed animals or blankets, my access to my computer will be limited. As someone who is glued to her laptop, that’s scary. 

However, I will be allowed some technology time. What I am not allowed, though is: food related material (she said she thought it might be okay but that she wasn’t sure and that it would probably be closely monitored), and pornography is not allowed. Including erotica. 

So what this long winded post is about is basically a plea to my MBs out there. I need help, recs for two things: 

1. Great GMM episodes that have nothing to do with food, and

2. Your favorite fics rated T and less.

I’m obviously here for Rhink, but I also like a bunch of other fandoms if you have suggestions.

I really really appreciate you taking time to read this, and also for always being so supportive. 

I’m not going in until April, as there’s no way on the green earth I’m going to miss seeing RandL in St. Louis. So there’s time. But I’d really appreciate any and all suggestions you have for things I can do to keep myself entertained while I’m locked up.
