Pearl - Shimmersong (AKA Shattersong)

Pygmy pegasus, she has to work really hard to fly bc her wings are so teeny, she ends up looking like a hummingbird with how fast she has to flap.

Her mother is a pegasus while her father is an earth pony, hence her small size and wings

Got her cutie mark from singing punk music in clubs, earned herself the nickname ‘Shattersong’ for how her vocals would destroy peoples glasses at bars.

Everything else still lines up w canon

Marina - Turquoisedream

Not actually a unicorn, Marina is a reformed changeling.

Octolings are changelings, before the great turf war they were colorful and kind, but their time underground caused their forms to dull to the gray colors of ‘evil’ changelings.

This has no actual bearing on their personalities, its more of a genetic shift, and much like canon mlp, their lack of love to share due to their situation led to the new appearance.

This means that when Pearl met Marina she was very gray and sad looking! After a few days she regained color.

Marina takes the form of a unicorn to use on the surface bc she was never a very good flier to begin with

uses her unicorn horn for engineering and holding things a lot, she’s very precise w it

Even after her being a changeling is revealed, she keeps the look up in public since she likes it, but drops it in private

Pearl was more upset about her not telling her she could fly with her than the fact that she was “lying”

They like to go on flights over Mt. Nantai :]

If it wouldn't be too much, I would like to know what you feel with regards to that ending lol

okay so i'm always extremely conflicted on the way they implied applejack and rainbow dash are married in the mlp finale - more the execution than the actual idea of it. obviously people who have known me since my hardcore mlp fandom days know i was obsessed with flutterdash (and, to a lesser extent, rarijack), but like, appledash is still a cute pairing! it was super popular in the early days of the fandom for a reason

the thing is, appledash kinda fell off in popularity compared to those other ships because the show started downplaying AJ and RD's dynamic after the first season. they stopped having so many episodes playing off of each other, and the writers started putting a lot more effort into exploring and deepening other relationships - like, well, the ones that i shipped. which is why those became my favorites! by the end of the series applejack and rainbow dash had barely had any episodes together in years, apart from one throwback episode about them still being competitive with each other in season 8. season 9 didn't have a single episode about the two of them - and, in fact, the last one-off episode they ever did about any of the mane six was yet another fluttershy and rainbow dash adventure. (not to mention that the equestria girls crew was busy actively implying rarity and applejack were in love by their own admission lmao)

then we get to the future scenes in the series finale and we get one line implying applejack and rainbow dash are married. it was bewildering. again, this isn't me going "how dare they not make MY ships canon." it's just... if you're gonna imply two of the mane six became a couple, something people had wanted for years, why didn't you build towards that conclusion for the characters at all? why did they barely even speak to each other in the final season? we need a whole episode about big mac getting married, but these two can't even hang out? it just feels like they picked an arbitrary ship that was popular in the early days of the fandom and added one line hinting towards it as an easter egg, rather than it being a meaningful attempt at queer representation on the show. because, i mean. that's what it is

after that and the episode about scootaloo's lesbian aunts who she lives with, which actually ended up being mostly about her mom and dad despite being heavily promoted by hasbro as a big special event for pride month, it just left a bad taste in my mouth. even in 2019 this was still the best mlp could give us

Help I know I asked for saiki k requests TWO months ago and I had a really fun idea for an illustration, but my brain is a smooth cube. so that idea stays up in the air.

For now take a really quick silly crack doodle about one of the many possibilities I think Kusuke/Makoto telling Saiki/Teruhashi would go. Spoiler alert: it’s hilariously horrible.

(Saiki thinks they’re messing with them and Teruhashi is seething. Are they pranking them? Who knows.)

And ya know what? Beneath the cut take my redesigns of these guys and my notes for them because I made several months ago ‘cause I haven’t touched them since :(

A quick note! These designs aren’t meant to say ‘fix’ the original-they’re just for fun! Even if I think elements of mine look better, clearly the original works and are well loved. Also I’m not especially fond of these anyways JAJSJANW

Saiki doesn’t change much other than his palette is a more balanced. Also I really like designing hair, and wanted the idea that Saiki really tries to sleek it down to something very generic and unassuming, but the hairpins get stuck in the way and his hair sorta moves outwards from there. Continuing the idea that his powers make him subtly less normal. It also accidentally made him look A LOT more like his parents, oops.

Also I drew a comparison from his canon hair to his redesign, because I didn’t think it was particularly clear until side by side.

Also I actually gave this one a proper illustration lol.

Teruhashi’s design was actually partly inspired by @lu-kario’s human mlp designs because they’re really good :^ She’s also pretty standard except her hair and color (which I’m not too satisfied with.)

I like the idea of the Teruhashi Siblings being a bit supernatural, so along with weird shine effects, they also get constant wind effects! Like in all the anime where they have flowing hair at just the right times even though it wasn’t windy at all before? Yeah! Except that’s more Makoto’s thing while the shine stays Kokomi’s.

Also what ethnicity are these characters now? To me they’re still Japanese, but I think people don’t ever use a range of skin tones for the same ethnicity. But really these are just fun designs I didn’t really think too hard.

Kusuke! He was the first one I did and an absolute PAIN. He was also the reason I did this, because as much as I love Saiki K and respect the author, I just got to know what is going on with his debut clothes.

Well not like I did that much better… Kusuke is stuck with four alt palettes because I can’t decide which shade of weird yellow and purple to make his head and gown (I’ve resolved to draw his hair a different shade of yellow in every drawing.) His eyes also match Saiki with purple eyes, because I think they look better lmao.

Also, that’s his Cambridge gown he’s wearing. And fun fact-they have a great amount of rules on what color does gowns get an accent of based off what subject people are taking! I decided to not think too hard on that and just gave him a better looking gown.

And I really like the hair I gave him, the original to me just lacks a bit of anime shape style. Also his headgear is shaped like a graduation hat now lol.

He also has a silly little doodle for what he’d look like with his lab coat. It’s not here, but I like to think he always puts a ponytail up!

Last and also least xp, Makoto! He’s uhh about the same with the points I said with Teruhashi. Just very angular now. I swear I tried to design a better fashion for Makoto but I just ended up with the same.

I tried to style his hair how Japanese celebrities would, but I don’t know if I succeeded. His hair as I said is constantly blowing to the left lol. Also he has a hair clip now! In my head Kusuke gives him a telepathy canceller disguised as a hairclip.

Also anyone can draw or get inspired by these designs if you wanted lol Though I don’t really like these, I still use these hairstyle for drawing them cause I think they look cool lol.

I know it's really basic but I love pasta so much in every form - my favourites are tortellini with tomato and mascarpone sauce, or just those little pasta bows (i forget what they're called). I also love anything mint flavoured, especially after eight after dinner mints OOF so good

Dysfunctional Shephard Siblings (Heavy Headcanoning)

I love them, Mitchell(HDTF), Adrian, and Alice(OC) They all kinda want to kill each other, uh- Mainly Mitchell I mean, yeah it’s really just Mitchell they want to kill.

Mitchell(He/Him): Struggles with lacking sympathy/empathy, he often can’t conceptualize the effects of his actions which leads to making quite a few stupid decisions or doing bad things and being confused when people are upset with him. He was hella homophobic when he was younger, main issue- He is gay, so actually he was just hating himself. He still hates himself to this day but for way more and bigger reasons. Nick is literally the one thing keeping him in one piece these days. I can literally never decide whether he’s younger, older, or twin of Adrian

Alice(She/They): Was the favorite child, thought her older brothers died when they never came back again. She made the choice to join Civil Protection to live slightly above bare-minimum. Unfortunately this made even her parents turn away from her and she became isolated for her actions. Eventually becoming a total shell of her former self as years went on. She was mostly guard around Nova Prospekt until Mitchell made the deal with the Combine, then ended up on his ship. And she hates it there, and she thinks Mitchell is an annoying asshole.

Adrian(He/They): Used to be pretty rambunctious as a kid, he and Mitchell liked to rough-house even though he would always kick Mitchell’s ass. (He got more chill as he got older) He started seeing the G-Man somewhere around when training for the H.E.C.U started, and let me tell you- He does NOT take being watched too well, he becomes paranoid from it and.. it just gets worse from there, the guy already had bad mental issues but now he’s just slowly going insane, and THEN the Black Mesa incident happens and uh,, Yeah he becomes sort of unhinged and a loose cannon at this point. He’s taken in by lesbian scientists tho(Gina and Colette) so that’s good. Oh yeah his gas mask basically became a comfort item to him because I said so

Apparently my idea of Adrian isn’t far off based on what I’ve heard about Marines being kind of unhinged.. And if you couldn’t tell, I yeeted Mitchell’s original “childhood story” from HDTF cuz 1. Didn’t like it, and mostly 2. I already had headcanons for Adrian’s family/homelife and I didn’t wanna change them.

Mitchell do be hella committed to things he sets his mind to no matter how long it takes which like dude,, you’ve gotta give em some credit, that’s something I could never do, how do you keep a commitment to a goal for 20 fucking years!!??

I have so many little tiny headcanons for these guys, like things that are totally meaningless and have 0 weight on ANY story But here’s a silly n cute one: When Adrian and Mitchell got bored enough in the house, they would sometimes sit down with their little sister as she watched like MLP or something. They know the MLP lore because of it lmao

Though I don't know which, cuz he's a bit too detailed for the new one, but also not really detailed enough for the manga and old anime one? Idk man, he's just a weird fungus dude obsessed with Knives. Don't ask. Actually no you can ask but I really don't know much about him lmao

The slimy guy with 6 eyes is Beryllium Djamme, or Blueberry Jam, a slime rogue I created for the Overlord universe. He used to be in an orchestra, cuz he's got this weird thing of being able to play any instrument after an hour or two of getting familiar with it, and who had a terrifyingly effective gut feeling of when bad things will happen and to who. Also a questionable feature I might remove later, but for now it stays. He likes carrying around an axe even as a rogue cuz I myself love the hand axe from DnD... Axes my beloved <3

The purple pony one is a MLP oc I made up not so long ago, a changeling who is oddly creative and can take on many forms as well as create his own appearances, as shown by the cutie mark. Don't know if that's actually possible according to MLP lore, but hey, I don't draw comics and animations, so there's no harm in just making up characters I won't ever use lol

And the last one, that blue slutty dude, he's my uh... Let's say main character. Pseudo. That is indeed also my name, and so that guy is my sort of avatar for interacting with my own creations. I don't see them as just pictures and ideas, they live rent free jn my brain and sometimes take over when I use them in roleplays with friends, so this guy is the closest to the irl artist as can be. Well, if you don't pay attention to his sluttiness, godlike powers and messed up backstory. Really the only common thing we have is hairstyle and glasses. BUT THATS NOT THE POINT.

AAHHH THANK U SM FOR ASKING !! I love talking about Love Live so much :,D!! There is so many good ones and I feel like I’m leaving some other favorites out but these are the ones that first came to mind!!!

First off THIS IDOLIZED RUBY UR… I don’t have it sadly but oh my god it’s literally soooo breath taking ;w; I love her outfit, the background, the theme. Just like everything. It all comes together so well.

Next is this Kasumi UR. I’m obsessed with this fashion style and it looks amazing on her!! I love her hair, the outfit, and the idea of using the photo she took of her eye & covering her actual one is so cool and unique :D I’m so glad I have this one.

Another Kasumi Ur :3 this one is just soooooo adorable and gives me nostalgia over g1 MLP because of the background. Honestly I think they put the most effort into that background than any other card ever. There is just so many little details in the back it’s amazing. And Kasumi of course looks cute her self !!

And… another Kasumi card ^_^;; for some reason I feel like they just put the most effort into her URs. I love this one so much and just recently got it! I love her outfit and her pose! She’s just always so stylish in her URs I’m just AAAHHH

Next isn’t Kasumi.. It’s Shioriko! This one is just soo good. I’m pretty sure this was her first UR too? And it’s her best one imo. Her outfit just fits her as a character so well if that makes sense. The art style is so nice aND AND!!!! IN GAME HER SLEEVES FLOP AROUND WHILE SHE DANCES! I LOVE THAT

Next is a Yohane UR ^_^ I like this one for the same reason I like Kasumis URs. She’s just so stylish! I love pink sooo much and I think that’s why cards where they wear pink end up being my favorites of theirs LOL. I love her dress and pink in her hair.

Same reasons for the last one. Again another card I feel they put a lot of effort into bc of the background ^_^ I would love to be in that room !!

And a Riko Card! Surprise it’s another mostly pink card mixed with ‘creepy’ dark tones.. I never got this one sadly but I want it sooo much. I love cards in idol games that are menhera/punk nurses. Riko is one of my favorite LL characters too so it sucks I don’t have this one yet :,) I love everything about this one

Accepted Seneca Animation 2021 Portfolio!!

Hello hello this year I was admitted into Seneca’s Animation program! Here are all of my pieces I included in my application :D

FIGURES

Yeah so advice is PRACTICE LOTS AND LOTS these were some of the first actually kind of okay ones I made (in like early December) and after submitting I DEFINITELY saw myself improve. Minor details. But anyway focus on capturing movement and structure; place importance on line quality and fluidity/smoothness; and of course make sure your proportions are in check. I’d recommend you also familiarize yourself with human anatomy like bones and muscles (mostly muscles) if you haven’t already! Don’t be intimidated by that, surface level will more than suffice. It’s especially helpful for like body checkpoints like the ribcage and how the pectorals transition into the deltoids etc, super super useful to have a general idea of that all in your head when you’re drawing!

HANDS

All the same as figures, you want movement and line quality and some sort of buildup/structure (not too much though, don’t wanna confuse the viewer). Also hands take TONS of practice too, I took reference photos of my own hands and went through so many different attempts. OBJECTS

I think these also kind of sucked lol; like they look fine but not as crisp and precise as some of the other ones I’ve seen. I don’t have much to say about these cause I literally just tried my best but maybe try to pick an interesting object--nothing overly simple like a book or something like that (I did a distortion pedal and Polaroid camera). The point of this section is so they can see how you work with organic and inorganic shapes and geometry. One of the professors made this really good point where a lot of seemingly complex designs like Star Wars spaceships and a bunch of sci-fi architecture are often influenced by everyday items like these—so you gotta learn how to start simple and evolve pre-existing designs into something greater!

LAYOUTS

So then you gotta do a view of a room from one position then like the place opposite to it. I just did my bedroom! Also after submitting I noticed that I drew the floorboards the wrong way in the second image khsfjhk But yeah I took two photos of what I wanted to draw, made a DIGITAL perspective ruler on my primary art program (Clip Studio love them to pieces) and drew the bones there, then I printed that out and went over it traditionally and did all the little details that way. Overall wasn’t too painful. Make sure your perspective is in check and your lines are crisp and readable—even if it’s a busy scene, you don’t wanna confuse the audience. Typically lines in the foreground will be thicker than ones in the background!

Last but not least, for personals I ended up being able to just pick from stuff I’ve already made (I made a compilation of those River Phoenix paintings I’ve made over the years if you’ve seen those, along with the fuckign MLP lineup I did for like a ‘character design’-esque thing (yes I know that counts as fanart and I was hesitant at first but technically they are original human designs minus the colour pallet and also I did not want to make something new with the time constraints) (if you’re doing fanart just make sure it’s not like instantly recognizable or a carbon copy)). I chose these deliberately because I wanted to demonstrate the range I had in my capabilities—so stylized semi-realism with my portraits, and then totally stylized TV show ready character designs to contrast! I personally only chose these two (they only provide two slots), but I know people who just made PDFs of multiple pages of their work. If you do that, I’d suggest to make sure not to bombard them with content, they’re not gonna wanna flip through ALL of it lmao. Choose your best pieces that demonstrate all your strengths! Don’t include things you hate or don’t like drawing, chances are that’ll be obvious to the people who are evaluating them and it’ll hurt your chances.

Then we also had to make a resume,,,,,, I just took my actual resume and swapped stuff out for more of the ‘creative’ activities I’ve participated in throughout my life (ie. runner-up winner for Miku Expo design contest, member of my school’s comic club, was in a musical a couple years ago, etc.).

I feel like I MIGHT have asked this before but if not lmao deja vu ig, but for panda pearl: what inspired you about the story and its characters? Also: why did you choose to make it comedic? i know that probably sounds like a weird question but i'm someone who writes a lot of original dark content so I'm just curious of the other side of the spectrum in terms of themes/genre!

tbh panda pearl is a mishmosh of many ideas. it started as a MLP au heaviyl inspired by tihngs like mirai nikki and was actually a lot darker at first. like. fucked up for edginess sake. not good. it also wasnt good the first few runs i tried to do of it bc of many...issues teenage/younger me didnt see a problem with, but those r all way way gone out of the plot now. none of that here

nori was the OG main character too, which made it darker at first bc hes so depressing, but the comedy and lighthearted bits actually came in when i made Maria the main character. shes a very bouncy character, and i felt she brought a lot of life to the story. S has also helped bring a lot of life to the story by adding characters like allen or helping with the lore a shit ton, thank you babe for that if u read this.

...although despite the comedic vibes it has, i do want readers (not just you goldie but liek. eveyroen reading it) to be aware its not actually a comedy, and contains a lot of ...depressing or even gory things, especially with the developments that will form in the chapter im working on.

... and i wont spoil a whole lot, but no character is really...as they appear. for an example that isn't too spoiler-y, Maria is...well, not as oblivious as she looks. for example you'll notice she tends to make jokes rather than directly answer people, and this isn't just for comedy, she does this on purpose.

in the end tho. the protag IS 14 so its toned down a lot from what it could be FKJDKDJFNH

I'm a rightie and always need to move my ring on the left while drawing so it doesn't bug me lol

pencil: when did you first take in interest in art?

No idea actually, I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't drawing (I'm sure my mom has some really embarrassing doodles from 5 y/o me somewhere)

watercolor: how many wips do you currently have?

....too many to count. But that's okay! We learn from wips even if they never reach completion

pastel: what colors/color palettes do you like to work with?

I have an undying love for warm colors. My go-tos are reds, pastel yellows and mossy green (which is also my fave color). I rarely use cooler tones like blues or purples

copic: what are some of your fav brands of art supplies?

Micron and Koh-i-noor for inking pens, Musa for sketchbooks, Fabel Castell for colored pencils (i have one of their cheap sets and I love it) tho I don't recommend their inking pens, and finally my watercolors are from Acquafine and I love them (slightly on the pricier side but nowhere near Winsor&Newton so if you want smt higher quality but don't wanna fully commit I recommend these). I use other mediums but don't really have specific brands i like

charcoal: what do you listen to when youre creating something?

Either music, niche internet drama (still thinking of the nugget couch), or horror stories

colored pencil: what fandom do you create the most art for?

Right now Resident Evil 8, but in the past I went through an outlast, Arcana and even mlp phase lmao. Tho aside from fanart i also draw my own ocs that i never post here.
