My thoughts on Akito Sohma
In the beginning, I hated Akito Sohma. Every episode made me more and more heated; I’d honestly never felt so much hate toward anything, especially not a fictional character. But the more I watched, the more I started to understand why Akito Sohma acts the way she does.
Akito has been raised knowing that people were awaiting her presence even prior to her birth, and on top of her being the “God” of the zodiacs, she feels like everyone should listen only to her. It doesn’t help that after her father’s death, her mother was insistent on telling Akito she was to be forever worthless and unloved.
In fact, Akito acts the way she does because…
She's afraid.
Afraid that someday, everyone will leave her, and that she’ll be completely and utterly alone. Afraid that she was a mistake.
And deep down, she knows her outbursts have consequences, yet she refuses to acknowledge them.
Akito is just an emotionally and mentally unstable woman. Back then, she was just an emotionally unstable little girl with no one to guide her or correct her cruelty. And so she grew up with that same instability where people were too afraid to oppose her.
She suffered emotional and psychological abuse, and because of that, she took to emotionally and mentally scarring the people around her. She felt it was her right to treat the zodiac members as she pleased because…she was their God. She believed it was her birthright, and she had every reason to act how she did toward them all.
But that never gave her the right to treat those people the way she did. Although her trauma affected her in that way, she should never have taken it out on the people around her.
She hurt people. Not only psychologically or emotionally, but physically as well. She almost killed Rin (twice). She scarred Yuki. Hurt Kisa, Hatori, Momiji, Kyo… and the list continues on. Every zodiac was affected in a negative sense by her in some way.
But it was never entirely her fault. Even though she was the one who carried out the actions, she just didn’t know when to stop. She was the victim of abuse. She was spoiled and entitled, but only because she was told she could be. And when Kureno’s curse first broke, she got scared, realizing that the zodiacs might all someday leave her; it very literally made something within her snap. She pleaded with Kureno to not leave her, and out of pity, he stayed. He couldn’t bear to leave the crying little girl who just seemed so…lost.
Someone like Akito doesn’t know how to control their feelings. Nor do they have someone to tell their worries and woes. Even if she did have the four eldest zodiacs to talk with, it never meant she’d believe they’d always be there to listen. It never meant that she really believed her own feelings either.
She truly was lost. She didn’t have anyone to turn to, and reacted the only way she knew how. With anger and outbursts and insults.
I still dislike her as a character but that means she’s just a very well-written antagonist. I told myself I wouldn’t accept her “redemption arc,” but that’s completely untrue.
I’m about to finish watching season 3 of Fruits Basket soon, and I think I’ll be content with how it all plays out.
I very honestly want Akito to finally be free. Free from the curse, and free to live her life how she really wants to. I want her to finally feel like she can love and be loved without restriction or fear that the person she loves might leave her.
Everyone deserves to know love, regardless of actions or upbringing.
And someone born into her life deserves to know what real love truly is. x-x-x Thanks for reading!! :)

I don’t think there are any memories that are okay to forget. None. I think…. I want to live with all my memories. Even if they’re sad memories. Even if their memories that only hurt me. Even if they’re memories I’d rather forget. If I keep them and keep trying, without running away… If I keep trying, then someday…I’ll be strong enough that those memories can’t defeat me. I want to think that there’s no such thing as a memory that’s okay to forget. | requested by @haroldtea ♡

It seems like people are always saying that the main character, Tohru, is boring because she's just there for us to project ourselves onto, without any real personality of her own. But that's just not true.
Sure, she comes across as really kind and upbeat at first glance. But there's so much more to her than just being a "good girl". Her past taught her how to be resilient after going through struggles that would break most people her age. And her care for others comes from truly understanding what we all need - compassion in a world that can be so cruel.
The critics only see surface things and stereotypes instead of who Tohru really is as a person. She connects with each member of the Sohma family not by trying to save them, but by appreciating their humanity above all else. Tohru grows not through angst or ambition, but by finding her self-worth through the family she chose.
Saying she doesn't matter is like saying the heart of the story doesn't matter. These stories thrive not just on drama, but on showing us that love and acceptance can heal even the deepest wounds. Tohru shows us this by building such deep bonds and inspiring so much growth in everyone around her.
At first look she might seem plain, but Tohru offers a nuanced portrayal of finding purpose through caring for others. Her character resonates because it conveys such meaningful messages about family, forgiveness, and unconditional care for all people through kindness rather than dramatics alone.

Me: *talking about anime/manga that make you cry from feels* “And then there’s Fruit’s Basket-”
My Friend, surprised: Fruit’s Basket? Isn’t that just the one where a girl befriends some guys who turn into animals based on the Chinese, uh- what’s it- zodiac?
Me, already internally sobbing: no no you don’t understand, you DON’T UNDERSTAND. It’s not about the zodiac, it’s not about the curse, it’s not *about* those things even though they are cornerstones of the premise, it’s about the *characters* and it’s about the *people* and it’s about how people are broken and how trauma is different for everyone, how people are cruel but they are also kind. It’s about the little things in life that make you whole or break you down and how everyone around you is bleeding and laughing and living and dying just like you and even when you are alone you aren’t really, not unless you choose to be, because somewhere, someday, there is someone who will look at you and hold your shards and say “you are worth it”. It’s about how the best intentions can leave the biggest scars, and about learning to trust again or maybe even learning to trust for the first time. It’s about broken bridges and the mending of them. It’s about how selfishness and self-sacrifice each have their place, how too much of either is just as harmful as none at all.
It’s about the Cinnamon Sweet Girl who is afraid to be selfish even when giving and giving and giving of herself ends up hurting her and hurting those who love her and how they wish she would just speak up for herself even a little bit, because how will they know how to help her if she does not dare ask?
It’s about the Tsundere who fights and screams and screams and fights because maybe if he is loud enough, strong enough, good enough, people will look and see who he is rather than who he was molded to be, who rejects kindness because he mistakes it for pity and friendship for lies until it’s proven over and over and he thinks maybe this time it is safe to reach out his hand in return.
It’s about the Prince who does not know what a mother is or how to find one, who finds kindness to be something so rare and strange and yet when he sees someone hurting he is kind because kindness is a choice and he will choose to make it even when he isn’t sure how.
It’s about the Lying Man who loves something enough to realize it needs to be broken, like a limb that has healed wrong and needs to be broken and set anew even if it hurts that he has to do it and that he will be seen as evil because of it.
It’s about the Bubbly Child who actually is hurting because what parent looks on their child and hates them so much they would rather forget they exist? And so surely he must be Extra Happy And Good for the parent who remains because this parent at least bothers to love him.
It’s about the Cold Man who is cold because he cares and was punished for caring, who chose to cause hurt because at least if it is by his hand then he knows when the damage will stop and if he is not the one to do it then the one who comes after will not stop and never stops because pain is all they know.
It’s about the boy who doesn’t know how to make his own choices meeting the girl who refuses to let others make her own. It’s about secrets and lies and truths and lost things. It’s about so many characters who live on the side, except do they? Do they really? The protagonists might be the catalyst that brings them into our view, but they are themselves people with their own hurts and dreams and wants and loves and needs, and oh aren’t they all the more beautiful and make the world so much deeper because of it.
It’s about these characters who on the surface are all a recognizable Trope™ and you expect that to be all they are, because it’s a story, and they are not even the main characters, and some of them are not even alive anymore, for all they have such a deep effect on the story. Except then the writer picks them up in all their messy, beautiful glory, rotates them a few inches to the side so you can see the myriad of facets hidden under their surface and says “Look. Look at them and how much more they are and can be, look at them and tell me what parts of yourself you see.”
It’s about finding people who you can be weak around but who also make you want to be strong for them when they have their turn to break. It’s about how meeting someone doesn’t necessarily make them your other half, how love isn’t something perfect and clean. It’s messy and jagged and comes with strings trailing behind from the lives you lived apart and the hurts you gained along the way but oh isn’t it worth it, to find someone who is willing and wanting to love you anyway. Who will fight for you and with you and will work alongside you to keep this thing that grows between you even when it is hard and your hurts clash and your scars reopen and bleed.
It’s about consequences and how the hurting in turn can also hurt others, either without meaning to or very much meaning to, but how there is forgiveness in the world just as much as there are consequences. It’s about how nothing is meant to last, but isn’t it beautiful while it is here for the time that it is, and won’t it be better to remember it when it is healthy and strong than to cling to it and chain it and force it to stay alive past it’s time.
It’s about how sometimes even the largest things in this world are connected by the smallest of red strings.
It’s about how, even when you are hurting and wounded, even when life has torn you down, it’s worth moving forward, because happy endings do exist, you just have to fight for them, and find the people out there who will be willing to help you do so.

I'm currently watching Fruits Basket (2019) and I've got so much running through my head about it.
Mainly the following things:
I'm going to fight Akito in the Denny's parking lot
Shigure will catch these hands too if he ain't careful
Big sis Eclipse has said that I am like Tohru Honda and she is wrong. Tohru is a much better person than me. Girl has the patience of a saint
My brain is stuck on a Fruits Basket AU about Eggo and mine's characters for no reason other than "Ooo neat and fun hyperfixation go brrrrr"

(CLAW HANDS)
The slow reveal of the Curse in Fruits Basket is so fucking well done. I swear. It wasn’t even hidden from us, per se. Yuki and Kyo share some of their trauma pretty readily with Tohru, in V1 and V2. In V2 itself Hatoru is warning Tohru away because the family is cursed, and Momiji outright tells Tohru that Hatori didn’t blame Akio “because that is our curse”.
But we just don’t have enough context to truly understand it yet. We only understand the true depth of the curse when we are presented with specific instances of abuse over and over and over again. It builds up subtly, so at the beginning we know the characters are hurt and hurting, but it isn’t until the midway point we realize they are all, actually, severely traumatized.

Watching fruits basket for the third time and it's the first time I'm absolutely obsessed with Yuki?? Like I don't understand how I slept on him the first two times.. I think maybe the first time I was too busy shipping kyoru and hoping they would end up together and viewing Yuki as a rival in that story. the second time I was so overjoyed about Kyo and Tohru and was still focusing on them (and honestly Kyo is just my favorite character so I'm always the most invested in his storyline)
But this time I'm so sooo invested in Yuki! I'm crying so hard about his development, his past and his strong will to turn thing around 😭😭 he's honestly SUCH a good character?? I love him so much???

#when you actually look at the recipes they're not even that weird or anything I just find the names interesting#there's one just titled ''Rocks'' which I wish would have fit as another option but I used all the spaces lol#Also some of the recpies from the section 'Cookery For The Sick And Convalescent'#are just like 'apple water'' 'beef essence''#I tried to leave out most of the obvious ''weird'' ones like 'jellied shrimp' or potted pigeon or like beef livers or whatever#except for cold fish pudding which I just like because of the specifics#'fish pudding' ? eh sounds normal. 'COLD fish pudding' ? now it sounds funnier for some reason#like what else is it meant to be.. ?? lukewarm fish pudding#Also considered including 'bread queen' 'cracker queen' and 'egg balls'#the name 'baconized meat balls' is funny but also I felt it would skew the reuslts since everyone likes bacon#and would just choose that lol. I also like 'rummage pickle' and 'Creamy Eggs Basket Style'#Which again are all like. relatively totally normal recipes but the way they choose to phrase the titles can sound silly#Like ''rocks'' just seems like some sort of cookie maybe - with currants and raisins in it (not really an oatmeal cookie#but just .. idk.. ?? maybe little balls with fruit in them) but instead of being like 'Raisin & Currant Treats' or whatever#it's like ''yeah lets just call this ''rocks''. like a rock from the ground? yeah'#ANYWAY#Love old books so much.. I should do another one of these where people choose which product is the best out of#all the various weird things shown in the advertising section of the 1880s magazines I have lol#I dont remember clearly but I swear there was like 'Electric shoe!' or something strange. I dont know if I could find enough#though since most of them are just normal like.. buying furniture or things like that#aNYWAY.. hgh.. again I am not just going to post polls forever I do have other things I'm working on lol#I have low energy right now and polls are a lot easier to make than like editing 30 costume photos lol#I have a physical therapy appointment soon hopefully and maybe I can sort out some of the Constant Pains and such

Finally finished Fruits Basket and I while I may still think that the very beginning and the very end of the story were a tad underwhelming, I absolutely loved the entire show and its definitely one of my favorite anime.
I came in thinking its going to be a cliche/cheesy romance anime, so I was very surprised with how much depth and personality all the characters, even the small side characters, had and it wasn’t really a case of “they will get one episode about them then we will completely forget about them” but instead it was something that was continuously built on over the course of the show in a slow burn and I really appreciate that.
My favorite characters are Tohru, who I was very quick to label as “the boring bland protagonist whose only job is to be the audience’s self-insert” but slowly she really became interesting and I found my self really loving her character and rooting for her and Kyo, who is the best boy ever that deserves all the happiness in the world and also everyone else really need to be a little nicer to him tbh and both of their parents (Kyoko and Kazuma) were such great loving parents and I loved their relationship with their own kid and also each other kid, its such a shame that Kyoko is dead, because I just know that she would have been the best mother-in-law ever with the most entertaining dynamic with Kyo.
Uotani, Manabe and Hiro are also some of my favorite, but honestly I either like or am neutral toward the rest of the cast, the only characters that I’m kinda annoyed with were Akito and Yuki (explained more in the tags), but if the last season had more episodes focused on developing Akito’s character and gave us a more dramatic way for the curse to be broken as well as leave out or fix some of the questionable romances (ShigureXAkito + KurenoXUotani) then it might have been a 10/10 show for me.
I did hear they have a prelude movie and two spin-off manga, so I will definitely be checking those out.
