Maybe I wouldn't be so interested in the relationship between kirk and spock if the designated Woman™ for each episode stayed on-screen for longer than it took for each of them to kiss kirk and die

i, mudd might be my favorite episode now, just because of the enterprise shenangians (can you tell found family is my favorite trope?). Any episode where uhura gets to do things is a bonus i love her. Defeating the evil robots with improv is a top tier plot. chekov was also incredibly funny. i miss sulu though :(

Nichelle Nichols Vs. Yvonne Craig
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Nichelle Nichols - (Star Trek) - She speaks for herself. Legendary, iconic, at the forefront of feminism and civil rights in the 60s, she is a triple threat who did so much more. She volunteered from 1977 to promote recruitment diversity within NASA, including some of the first female and ethnic minority astronauts. Martin Luther King Jr. compared her work on Star Trek as a 'vital role model' to the civil rights marches. She refused to be dismissed, fought for visibility and shone whilst doing so. As a woman in stem, and simply a woman she means the world and stars above to me.
Yvonne Craig - (Batman, Star Trek) - 7 year old me didn't know she was a lesbian but she sure knew she liked batgirl

Additional propaganda below the cut
Nichelle Nichols:
She is the original badass babe. She was a black woman in a leading role on TV in the 60s, a trailblazer for black actresses for years to come. She is so beautiful and so awesome.
Tumblr media
she's fantastic. have you seen her? paved the way for black actresses on TV even while her lines and scenes were being cut and improvised the most iconic uhura line in the series. (sulu: "I'll save you, fair maiden!" uhura, pushing him away: "sorry, neither!") she's incredibly talented and it's a crime the show didn't give her more screen time (or make her sing more often because she also has a beautiful voice!)
Tumblr media
“Sorry, neither” in response to “fair maiden” was ad libbed by her. There’s a lot more I could say but what else do you need??
Tumblr media
A sci-fi icon!
Tumblr media
She was such a trailblazer, and Uhura was such an important character for so many people to be able to see on TV. Apparently Mae Jemison (the first African American woman to go into space) cited her as a reason she wanted to become an astronaut. She was just an absolute legend!
Tumblr media
The story of Martin Luther King telling her not to quit Star Trek gives me chills. Representation matters. “Thank you so much, Dr. King. I’m really going to miss my co-stars.” Dr. King's smile, Nichols recalled, vanished from his face. "He said, 'What are you talking about?'" the actress explained. "I told him. He said, 'You cannot,' and so help me, this man practically repeated verbatim what Gene said. He said, 'Don’t you see what this man is doing, who has written this? This is the future. He has established us as we should be seen. 300 years from now, we are here. We are marching. And this is the first step. When we see you, we see ourselves, and we see ourselves as intelligent and beautiful and proud.' He goes on and I’m looking at him and my knees are buckling. I said, 'I…, I…' And he said, 'You turn on your television and the news comes on and you see us marching and peaceful, you see the peaceful civil disobedience, and you see the dogs and see the fire hoses, and we all know they cannot destroy us because we are there in the 23rd Century.'"
Tumblr media
She shared the first interracial kiss on Star Trek, helped propel real life African American women into space-related careers, and looks divine in a mini skirt.

HOW DID UHURA WALK BACKWARDS SO FAR??? WOW!

Season 3! Episode 1! (Spock’s Brain)! Time to watch a guy lose his mind. Literally:
- Scotty’s got a new hair cut.
- I like her purple outfit (10/10 would wear myself, that and those boots)
- Nap time on the bridge, turn off the lights
Tumblr media
- He’s eepy (don’t take his brain!)
Tumblr media
- sleepy
Tumblr media
- Diagnoses you with “brain is gone”
- The camp of this episode is camping
- “Then we’ll have to take him with us.” “Take- take him where?” “In search of his brain, Doctor.” Do they realize how bizarre this is?
- I’d say there should be a game where you take a shot every time they say ‘Spock’s brain’ in this episode but that would be irresponsible
- Kirk is having a lot of interaction with the bridge crew this episode
- Uhura asking the right questions
- “If I guess wrong Mr Spock is dead. Spock will die.” He cares and is scared
- “Life form readings, Mr Spock- Mr Scott.” Damn
- “The givers of pain… and delight.” Cool song title
- This is unsettling. Like worse than most horror movies. Imagine controlling your friends body with a remote because they don’t have any brain
- They didn’t give McCoy any warning about the trap activating
- Heating up rocks with phasers
- I love how Spock is still saying fascinating even just as a brain
- When Kirk can hear Spock’s voice again he goes up to his body so he can pretend to talk to him normally
- “Captain, there is a definite pleasurable experience connected with the hearing of your voice.”
- Sleep
Tumblr media
- Sleepy
Tumblr media
- Once again they gave Kirk period pain
- Sulu on the bridge
- “I think science provides us with an answer.” “It does, captain.” “Agreed, Doctor.” *all three proceed to kick the shit out of you.*
- They’re all violent and feral in this episode
- McCoy’s boots fly up
Tumblr media
- Those buttons to control Spock are so specific, I can barely turn on a light switch if there’s more than three buttons
- McCoy is so ready to potentially die to save Spock
- Massive Migraine McCoy
- James “I’d die before I break the prime directive” Kirk breaking the prime directive
- THE OVERLAYING OF FACES AND MCCOY SWEATING WHILE KIRK NARRATES. IM DEAD. WHO DID THIS.
- This is fucked up. What the fuck is happening
- *wakes up from brain surgery and starts info dumping*
- “I should have never reconnected his mouth.” You love him and you missed him. Admit it. Awww the laugh he lets out as Spock just continues
This was… an experience…

Chapter 4 is out! Here's a fresh slice from my novel-length K/S fic!
Tumblr media
“That is not the word I would employ, but the concept is essentially correct. Your body’s thermoregulation has been impacted by your injury, and compounded further by the temperature on Aralis IV. Maintaining your body heat will be conducive to increased oxygen transport to your damaged tissues. However, there is little way to raise your core temperature beyond the sharing of body heat. I am certain you are aware of this, having taken the same survival course at the Academy that I have.” Spock does not have to remind the captain that he is the one who designed the ship's survival procedures training program. He inclines his head in the direction of Ensign May and Lieutenant Sulu, who are all but three inches from one another as they sleep. Their arms are around one another. It is logical, but Spock omits that he wishes to have his fingers on Kirk’s pulse for fear that it might just disappear sometime in the middle of the night—omission isn’t lying. “Very logical,” Kirk agrees, with an unreadable expression. “That’s the first time anyone’s used that line on me.”
As always, if you were curious about that bit, you should check out my fic "I Shall Do Neither" here at AO3! Details below:)
I Shall Do Neither (23039 words) by onwhatcaptain Chapters: 5/22 Fandom: Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: James T. When T’Pau tells Spock to live long and prosper, he knows he shall do neither. This is a story about men who love each other, and the lengths they will go to for one another. - Foolish, he thinks. I have been a fool.   How he had wanted so desperately to prove his Vulcan side. How all his life it had felt like a performance, and yet, to be finally subject to the most Vulcan thing of all destroyed him. The stripping of logic. All sense torn from him. His carefully constructed barriers had collapsed like a flimsy house of cards. To be granted his wish this way was a type of mockery. How he had wanted to be fully Vulcan. To prove that the blood which runs through his veins was not so human.   How wanting had been better than having. - This story is told in two parts across 21 chapters, and will be updated on Fridays.

I ended 2023 with Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. New year new Spock? Is that anything?
Here are my thoughts:
Overall I liked it more than TMP but much less than WoK, which is obviously the best one of the bunch! The construction of the movie seemed pretty messy especially compared to WoK but there were a lot of interesting concepts that sort of made up for that for me!
Things I liked:
💫 Bones Bones Bones. That old cranky bastard is destined to be my favorite in every movie, isn’t he?
Tumblr media
💫 I love him carrying around Spock’s katra, I love his confession that he’s missed him, I love that he looks old and tired. I love how bravely he goes to the katra transfer ritual. He’s just doing a lot in this movie!
Tumblr media
💫 I said this in my WoK post and I’ll probably say it for every movie, I just adore seeing these characters get older. I love seeing how their bodies and faces change with time. I’m in my mid 30s (which I know isn’t that old!) and I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about aging and friendship and family and death so this aspect of Trek is really resonating with me.
Tumblr media
💫 It wouldn’t be a fight scene if Kirk didn’t launch himself at his enemies like some kind of deranged cat.
Tumblr media
💫 More Sulu!!! One thing that surprised me in TOS was how little of characters like Uhura and Sulu there was. Thrilled to see them in the movies being their awesome selves.
Tumblr media
💫 and speaking of, I loved Uhura here. Her scene where she forces that little brat into the closet is perfection.
Tumblr media
💫 Folks, if you don’t like Spirk shipping this is the wrong place for you to be. I love how sad Kirk is about Spock for most of this movie, and how happy he is to get him back. Look at that smile 😭
Tumblr media
💫 They’re in love and no one can tell me otherwise. A man doesn’t blow up his beloved ship and lose his son for a coworker.
Tumblr media
💫 Uniforms were a mixed bag here, and how I felt about them went up and down quite a lot! Initially I hated the little purple blouse Kirk wears, but once he took the jacket off and I saw the sleeves + those pants? Hello, yes, great outfit. Man looks like he’s going to Halloween as a gay little pirate and I have no complaints. I can’t find a great picture of it so just extrapolate what you can from this gif.
Tumblr media
💫 I loved the mind meld scene. It felt so full of grief for them both.
Tumblr media
And honestly there isn’t really a good way to sum up what I didn’t like about it. It just wasn’t a great movie! It was fine, and as you can see I did enjoy a lot of it! But it didn’t flow well for me.
I’m looking forward to more Star Trek in 2024!
