Yooooo, 10,000 hits on the fake dating fic that's WILD!! I'm super flattered and thrilled that so many people have checked it out <3
It's also inching its way to 500 kudos, and if / when it gets there, I really want to release a version of the chapter three kiss written from Robin's POV as a special way of saying thank you for all the support. That being said, I'm not sure if it would make sense to post it on ao3 or just to upload it here and on twitter? I don't really want it to be part of the fic itself, since it's important to me that it stays limited to Chrom's POV, but I guess I could make it part of a collection or mark it as a work inspired by the fic??? Idk, but I've got some time to figure it out I guess LOL.
I'm also chugging along with progress on the next chapter! The holidays were more busy than expected but things have settled down now and I'm definitely making progress. My hope is to have it done by the end of the month or, more ambitiously, before my classes start on the 25th, but it will probably depend on how deeply mired in the revision process I get.

The Stein family's names (given and surname) were all selected quite deliberately (and in some cases, very unsubtly). Let's talk about it!
Stein: The surname of the family. This was selected less so for its common meaning ("stone" or "rock") and moreso for the way it ties into some of the least subtle Frankenstein naming references in the universe, with Franziska Stein and Victor Stein being direct puns of the man (and by extension, the monster) of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein--though her father's name references Dr. Frankenstein slightly more directly, the roles of monster and creator between the two may be designated interchangeably depending on personal interpretation.
Franziska: The German form of Francisca, meaning "from France" but also "free"-only the latter meaning is significant here, in relating to Fran's current freedom (or lackthereof)--specifically, personal freedom and physical freedom. In terms of personal freedom, Fran is considerably impeded; as someone who joined Passione in order to protect her father from more brutal treatment within the prison system, his safety hinges on Fran's compliance and caution within the organization--she must perform what is demanded of her, and needs to approach her words and actions with caution so as not to endanger this safety. However, Fran is much more physically free than her incarcerated father even with these limitations in mind, capable of moving fairly freely in her downtime.
Victor: Latin in origin, meaning "winner" or "conqueror"--one who defeats an opponent. In the case of Fran's father and the Stein family at large, the victory this name beckons is of the Pyrrhic sort. In the strictest sense of the word, Victor (with the assistance of his daughter) successfully enacted his desired vengeance on the man who permanently emotionally and physically scarred his daughter and murdered his wife. However, the cost of this revenge was his incarceration and as an extension of this, his daughter's enlistment in Passione to protect him.
Yua: Japanese in origin, written with the kanji for "tie, bind" (結) and "love, affection" (愛). As the name implies, Fran's mother is the heart of the family--the person who binds them together. In her absence, Fran and Victor are undone, so lost in their grief that the path they so desperately take in her name actively goes against what she would have wished of them as someone whose medical profession centred around the care and mending of the hurt.
Sakai: The maiden name of Fran's mother. Japanese in origin, written using the kanji for "boundary, border" (境). The loss of Yua incites the crossing of a moral boundary that cannot be walked back.

Miscellaneous Infinity Train Fan Cars
@lakesbian You said you were interested in these, so here goes - the full set of Infinity Train fan cars I made. I made these nineteen cars for five different passengers in all, mixed in with canon cars and a fan car a friend made.
The Alphabetized Car is a car with a wide assortment of miscellaneous items that are all tagged and neatly sorted in alphabetical order. Featureless denizens occasionally manifest to maintain the car's organizational system, and to tag and add inexplicable new shipments of junk. If you come across them, you can help them with their work, but there is a continuous hazard of being identified as an item that belongs in the car and tagged. If this happens to you, you can wait for them to leave and then escape, but the tag does not come off.
The Murder Mystery Dinner Car is exactly what it says it is; it's a fancy dining room where a fair play whodunnit murder mystery plays out and you need to solve it to leave. The murders aren't 100% real; everything has a very staged feel to it, like it's self-consciously a show being put on for the benefit of the passengers. A relatively common source of companion denizens.
The Back On Earth Car briefly makes it seem like you have escaped from the train and are, in fact, back on Earth. You quickly realize that you're like a ghost and can't be perceived or interact with anything, though. The visions this car gives you of Earth aren't perfectly reliable, although it isn't just making them up out of whole cloth, so it can be kind of hard to disentangle. The car generally directs you towards scenes of people worrying about you, missing you, and assuming you're probably dead.
The Conspiracy Car is a windy void that manifests your thoughts in real time as scraps of paper with images and text, hanging and connected by red strings; more relevant thoughts manifest come closer to you and less relevant thoughts pull away. As you play around with it, it begins to subtly insinuate itself into this process to alter your thinking, first by improving it and generating useful insights that you wouldn't have thought of yourself, and then by making you paranoid and despondent. If you get caught up in this and stay put for too long, the car will ensnare you in this web and consume you.
The Maid's Car is a room featuring a two-foot-tall denizen with a jellybean for a head, wearing a maid outfit; when met, she is usually cleaning up a pile of spilled jellybeans from some unspecified incident. She is a very frequent companion denizen, and is extremely experienced as such; she's something of a foil to Lake, being very comfortable in her assigned role. Even as it's grown routine over the years, even with its ups and downs, she thinks of acting as a companion for passengers as her purpose, and the idea of casting off the denizen role and leaving the train is unthinkable.
The Biplane Car requires you to fly a biplane from the entrance to the exit. It's set up so that you'll have an argument with your companion that will distract you from flying the plane.
The Henry Car introduces you to Henry, a psychic, shapeshifting denizen who appears human, and will try to follow you on your journey, much like Perry. You will remember that Henry has been accompanying you throughout much of the train, but this will be false. You will remember knowing and liking Henry on Earth, but this will be false. Henry is basically malevolent in nature, and will be a burden on you at best; the sooner you realize something's up and dispel him, the better. (Worth The Candle didn't invent this general concept, but the name Henry is a reference to its use of it.)
The Apocalypse Car is kind of a counterpart to the Back On Earth Car. It takes you through a distorted, fake version of Earth where something is horribly wrong, and all the people are missing or dead. It's unclear exactly what happened, but you get the sickening feeling that it's a plausible future somehow.
The D&D Car is just a fun cute little car with a group of denizens who want you to join their TTRPG campaign, which the car helps produce dramatic visual aids for. It's very easy to spend too long there, if you're the type to go for that and you aren't too concerned with making forward progress through the train.
The Airport Car is arguably a utility car, which denizens can use to return to their home car. (Passengers can technically also use it in the same way, but you can't control where it sends you and it only sends you elsewhere on the train, so it'll actually just send you to a random car.) Its real purpose is to divest you of a companion - it shows up when your companion is getting tired of being your companion and you need a teary-eyed airport goodbye where you try to convince them to stay.
The Motel Car is a seedy motel where you need to do a chain of fetch quests for assorted primate denizens to get the key for the exit. A very tedious car even if done exactly correctly.
The Marathon Car is a car designed to exhaust you. The path through it is very clearly marked; it's simply a very long way from the entrance to the exit. It has a racing theme to it, but thankfully no actual time limit; you'll definitely need to pace yourself. Expect to spend at least a day here.
The Vivisection Car is a hospital ward with a large and horrifying betentacled denizen who, driven by curiosity, will attempt to surgically take apart any living thing it encounters.
The City Of Cards Car is a city made of cards, inhabited by little card people. The whole city is extremely delicate and will collapse if not treated with great care, at which point you have pissed off all the local denizens, who will need to rebuild it.
The Nuclear Test Site Car is a little '50s Americana town, eerily devoid of life. There is a heavily-armored observational building near the exit, where a passenger poking around is likely to set off a nuclear bomb that destroys the town.
The Folsom Prison Blues Car is a car that is a prison, inhabited by both guard denizens and prisoner denizens. Passengers will generally be identified as a prisoner, and the guards will refuse to allow them to leave the car - even treating a passenger's number falling as an escape attempt to be punished.
The Survivor Car features a mid-sized group of denizens (one or two dozen) who are collectively quite unpleasant. When a passenger arrives, the group will begin voting at regular intervals as to who should be kicked out. The Survivor Car's denizens treat this fate as especially unpleasant, like they're being sent to their deaths; however, they're just playing it up as part of the game, and getting voted out is in fact the only way for a passenger to leave the Survivor Car. The longer you manage to politically maneuver yourself into staying on the Survivor Car, the likelier you are to wind up stuck on it as its newest permanent denizen.
The Elephant Car has a society of mouse-like denizens milling about chatting with one another, totally ignoring a large elephant standing in the middle of the car. It's a bit of a Rorschach test, and if the passenger acknowledges the elephant, the results are a coinflip - sometimes the elephant is a grave taboo that the passenger will be chased out of the car for violating, and sometimes the passenger will be lauded for bravely speaking up where no one else would, making the elephant feel welcome, etc.
The Grand Theft Auto Car is set in a stereotypically/unrealistically crime-ridden modern city; passengers must navigate, Scylla-and-Charybdis-style, a complex gang war between several factions to get through.

I am a setting a new system for those who break my boundaries. I know this sounds harsh but at this point it is starting to hinder my ability to engage in the non/alterhuman communities and I can't take much of it.
Firstly, I am going to start blocking individuals who repeatedly break my boundaries and make no effort to correct themselves. I am tired of having to assert my boundaries seemingly every day and it is draining me.
Secondly, if I don't know an individual and they break a boundary that is detrimental to this blog (i.e. reblogging my fictionkin posts with fandom tags) they will not get any warnings and instead be blocked on sight. That boundary is set in place to ensure my safety because of how notoriously toxic the MH fandom is. My boundaries page will be revamped to show which boundaries are a higher priority.
I am sorry if this upsets anyone but I also need to ensure my own safety and comfort especially if this boundary breaking is hindering me now.
Edit to clarify: I fucking know how fandom tags via reblog work and I don't care. If you feel the need to still put a fandom tag on my post when reblogging even for organizational purposes, then just don't reblog.

How do tags work? I'm newish to Tumblr and I don't really get the tags. Do I need to tag everything?
hello and welcome! tags serve four major purposes:
to let other people find your content: this is only applicable if you are the creator of the post, not if you reblog it. for example: if you make a post about dean you might want to add the tags "dean winchester" and "supernatural" or even "spn" so that other people who are interested in content about dean can see the post when they're searching for content on tumblr (if you want to find content and you're using desktop, you can search tumblr.com/tagged/supernatural [or whatever it is you're looking for] and you'll be able to see original posts that people tagged as "supernatural." if you're on mobile, frog speed, my friend.) also, friendly reminder not to over-tag things. if you tag a post that is just about dean with "sam winchester" "castiel" "john winchester" etc people are more likely to block you. spam tagging is really annoying.
organization on your own blog: adding tags to your posts lets you find them on your own blog later (again, this is really only useful on desktop, not mobile) and this goes for original posts and reblogged posts. for example: you may have noticed that i tag all of my posts about dean with "dw." that's the organizational tag i use for my own blog. i also have tags that probably don't mean anything to anyone else but that help me to organize certain ~genres of posts on my blog (like "hashtag family"). if you want to search your own blog or someone else's for all of the posts you/they have in a specific tag you can do that on desktop by going to blog.tumblr.com/tagged/tag. so for example if you wanted to search my blog for the dean content you would go to queermania.tumblr.com/tagged/dw
giving other people the ability to block/filter content: this is relevant for both original posts and reblogged posts. for example: someone might have followed you for doctor who content but they are not interested in seeing supernatural content. you tagging your supernatural posts with a "supernatural" tag lets them filter or blacklist it so they don't have to see it. this is also relevant for certain types of content like nsfw, body horror, etc. you may see tags like "tw body horror" or "body horror tw" or "body horror cw" or even "body horror for ts" (that one's an old relic from a time long ago when we had to use an extension called tumblr savior to filter content). content/trigger warnings are subjective. not everybody uses them. not everybody is willing to use them. it's not uncommon to ask people (politely!) to tag for something that might be upsetting to you, with the caveat that they might say no and then it's up to you to decide if you want to continue following them or not. (for example if you asked me to tag for alcohol, i would politely decline, simply because i do not think i would realistically remember to do it and i don't want to promise something i can't deliver and risk harming you.)
commentary that doesn't need to be a part of the post: you may have noticed that a lot of us put our thoughts on any given post in the tags. this is a way to leave commentary without muddying up the post. not all thoughts need to be on the post permanently. in fact, most don't haha. sometimes if you leave commentary in the tags, someone will copy and paste or screenshot them into the body of the post because they think your thoughts deserved permanent status and that other people should see them too. we like to call this getting peer reviewed because we are nothing if not a website full of nerds.
so those are the ways we use tags on this website. you can choose not to use tags at all, use them religiously, or use them only when you want. it's really up to you. you create your own experience. however, if you do opt out of tagging anything at all, people might be less likely to interact with you because it makes it harder for them to curate their own experience. but again, it's really up to you!

2023 writing roundup :D
hi all! thank you to @hgejfmw-hgejhsf @rockyroadkylers @songliili @littlemisskittentoes for the tags on this! I loved getting to go back through all of the works you guys have shared with us this year (and hearing about some of your upcoming projects as well!)
I realized that I did do a year in review post, but that was mostly stats, so I figured I'd participate in this one as well since it'd be nice to have all of my fics linked in one place for organizational purposes!
thank you guys for everything this year, I can't wait for all that's coming in the next one! <3

Sure As The Stars in the Sky | E | 20k
It shouldn't matter that Alex has been present for each and every one of Henry's most important life milestones, sometimes the singular catalyst for them. It shouldn't be important that he's grown to be more familiar to Henry than even some of his own family members, that part of him is burrowed so deeply into Henry's subconscious that he can taste it sometimes, that even when Alex crashes in, spirited and passionate, it feels like an easy exhale; like coming home. It shouldn't matter, but it does.
Tumblr media
praying our bridges don't make waves | E | 82k
When June gets sick, Alex knows he'll do whatever it takes to make sure she gets the care that she needs. Even if that means convincing his nemesis/sexuality-crisis-inducing/clandestine hook-up partner/somewhat of an actual friend to pretend to be his soulmate in order to pull it off. It's both more and less complicated than it sounds.
kiss me like you've got nowhere to be | M | 3k
In the three years they’ve lived together, he thinks it’s safe to say that he and Alex have gotten… close. The kind of close that other people like to point out sometimes when they’re in public, and not just their overinvolved older sisters and overly suggestive friends. A few of Alex’s colleagues have made comments when Henry shows up at the holiday parties or after a stressful work day to make sure Alex is eating and staying hydrated, just the same as Henry’s clients each know little bits of odd Alex-facts that he lets slip sometimes in his sessions. Regardless, it’s all terribly domestic, and the twinge of satisfaction Henry gets when Alex’s dates don’t go well is most definitely not appropriate, even if they are kind of in a weird, probably mostly platonic, very codependent relationship. If he’s not careful, Henry’s going to get himself so, so hurt one of these days.
I feel the beating of your heart, I see the shadows on your face | M | 18k
It’s certainly not what Alex would have predicted a few days prior. If someone had told him he’d be tenderly embracing his self-imposed enemy after switching bodies with him for seventy-two hours and embarking on an unintentional journey of self discovery and then finally finding their way back to each other to ask for a True Love’s Kiss that may or may not break the curse that flipped their lives upside down - Well, Alex would have told them to fuck off.
but I can count on you to tell me the truth when (I've) been drinking and you're wearing a mask | M | 8k
The room goes quiet again, Alex too focused on the sound of his own breathing. He’s already started, he figures, and the person still hasn’t left. But this next bit is a little more personal, and Alex isn’t positive what the parameters are for one-sidedly conversing with a masked stranger about your best kept secrets at a halloween party when you’re so drunk that the floor is beginning to look like it may open up and swallow you whole. Isn’t sure if that might be better anyway.
who ya gonna call? | M | 7k
Henry is a ghostwriter. Alex is a little confused on what exactly that means.
Tumblr media
I'll bet it all on me and you, I'll bet it all you're bulletproof | M | 11k
“Let’s do this,” he says. “Let’s,” Alex agrees, pushing down on the handle until the door swings open. “After you, boyfriend.” This is most definitely not his finest idea. Henry usually practices much better self preservation skills. Much better common senseskills. He steps over the threshold of Alex’s room and it feels like sealing his fate. They’re doing this for Alex to win over their bosses in a lighthearted game with a harmless lie, but Henry can’t fight off the bitter knowledge that, regardless of how tonight goes, Alex will be fine, but Henry has so much to lose.
(+ listen to the podfic here!)
but if you could see us from a distance you'd know I've always been so close to you | E | 10k
Objectively, standing half-soaked from rainwater with a stitch in his side and an uncomfortable, raging hard-on outside his worst enemy’s door is not Henry’s finest moment. It’s not even on the list. [or, henry is afflicted with a curse-gone-wrong that stipulates that only his sworn enemy, alex claremont-diaz, can touch him.]
you make it look so easy, I know it's not | T+ | 8k
Bea’s to his left, speaking frantically on the phone with who Henry hopes is the fire brigade or someone else trained to deal with these— situations. In front of him, Pez is fumbling frustratedly with the water hose, showcasing his colorful vocabulary with a flourish of jerky hand movements and chaotic pacing. On either side of the fence, his neighbors are peaking over the sides to ask if everything’s okay, and Henry feels the resolution to make a good first impression crumbling and slipping rapidly out of his grasp. Even David watches on from inside the house, his sage eyes and patriotic bowtie appraising the scene and looking back to Henry as if to say I told you so. And the fryer — the fryer itself is up in flames, thick gray smoke swirling up into the air and soaring high above the tree line now. In the distance, the echo of sirens. Henry may faint right here, in the middle of his backyard at his new home before he's even unpacked, with all the neighbors and his family and friends watching on, on his first official American Thanksgiving. It is, by all means, not what he’d envisioned for the day.
Tumblr media
somehow I'd get by (part one) | E | 13k
Henry should have known, probably, that accepting a job offer from Pez would have its nuances. It’s his own fault that he hadn’t asked more questions, that he hadn’t regarded it as a red flag when he’d had to sign several very thick NDA’s at the onboarding, when Pez had smiled so big and so secretively when they went out to celebrate afterward that Henry had to physically look away from it. Though he’s new to the city, he’d thought that working as an accountant wouldn’t offer all that many opportunities for any sort of overly odd, eclectic jobs. So he’d shown up on his first day at the provided address, a big, nondescript brick building in front of him with a duffel bag full of his sign-on papers, his computer, and a framed photo of his dog, David, ready to take up its rightful place on yet another boring, blank desk. He’d made it all of two steps inside the door before realizing that he’d just accepted a contract working for some kind of sex club. He’d stood his ground despite the burning flush that bloomed on his cheeks and then, miraculously, he’d stayed.
take my hand if you can take me as I am | E | 14k
It would hurt less, Alex guesses, if he wasn’t head over heels for the guy he’s supposed to be fucking through an ancient one-sided sex curse with that was partially — a lot, actually — his own fault. But. It’s not like there’s a fucking handbook. Alex has looked.
if you take a life, do you know what you'll give? | M | 9k
It would have been one thing had Alexander’s job description been simply to stay in his hotel room and operate the funds covertly, an exceedingly safe distance away from Henry and any of Le Chiffre’s men. As it is, they’d instructed Alex to play the part of Henry’s date for the night, subsequently granting him the access he’d need to the private cardroom within the casino in order to report back to headquarters the funds needed in the precise moment Henry would need them. It's too dangerous, and he knows it. Henry's had a lot of blood on his hands in this life, but he refuses to have Alex's as well.
miles to go, but we're almost home | M | 5k
Texas is a bit of a last minute decision. As in, at the actual last minute, Henry had begged them at the station for whatever ticket they had left to get out of the city, shoved his credit card at them expeditiously, and promptly boarded the vessel just as the doors slid closed behind him. Turns out it’s the best decision he’s ever made.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING HERE TO WITNESS ME SCREAM INTO THE VOID! this space has meant so much to me since I first read the book when it came out, but even more so once I started writing again these last few months. 2022/2023 was a very long, very lonely time in my life and I just didn't have words for a while. when the movie came out, I remembered how much I loved the book and finally opened a blank page again! I needed an outlet, and I found so much more than that <3

Whumpuary FAQs
(Making a post for this bc i think it's easier to access than the browser page. this post is linked in the blog description)
Q: What is whump?
A: Whump is a fandom term and describes fictional characters getting hurt in any way. Can be physical, emotional or psychological and overlaps with Hurt/Comfort and Angst. It’s used in fanfiction but also original fiction, movies/TV shows where a character gets hurt (and gifs/video clips of those scenes), fanart/original art and more. Check this link for more discussion and definitions of the term.
Q: Is Whumpuary an event for January or February?
A: Whumpuary takes place in January. For February go check out Febuwhump
Q: Is there an AO3 collection?
A: Yes, it’s right here! (It is closed now, but will open on January 1st 2024!) The 2023 collection is here and the parent collection where you can find some more fics is here.
Q: How do I add my works to the AO3 collection?
A: You can either go to the collection and post to it directly (link above) or when posting/editing your work you need to type in Whumpuary2024 in the collection field. If it shows up in the dropdown just click it, and if it doesn’t show up press enter and you’re fine.
(There is a collection just called Whumpuary, that’s the parent collection I made for organizational purposes. It is closed and it is supposed to be closed. The collection to put your works in is called Whumpuary2024)
Q: Is it allowed to combine Whumpuary prompts with other events (such as Bad Things Happen Bingo, …)?
A: Yes, as long as the other event(s) allow it, go ahead!
Q: Can I use the prompts after the event is over?
A: Yes! Use any prompts any time you want. The AO3 collections stay open so you can use those too. Your creations just won’t be reblogged to this blog.
Q: Do the Alt Prompts have to be done in order?
A: When replacing a main prompt with an alt prompt, you can use any you want. The numbers don’t have to correspond and you can use a random order.
Q: What are the rules to be a completionist?
A: To be a completionist you have to use at least one prompt from all 15 numbers. It’s up to you if you want to make 15 standalone pieces, one big work that includes 15 (or more) prompts or a combination.
Q: Is noncon, nsfwhump/sexual whump, gore, etc. allowed?
A: Yes, any type of content is allowed. Just make sure to tag it correctly.
Q: Is AI generated content allowed?
A: Any AI generated images or text aren’t allowed in this event (e.g a story “written” by ChatGPT or an image generated with Dall-e/Midjourney). This excludes things like Grammarly/Autocorrect/Predictive text or Autoselect/Autofill.
If you have any other questions or if anything is unclear, the askbox is open :)

Inklings Challenge 2023 FAQ
(Things that People Have Already Asked or Things I Imagine They Might Ask)
What is the Inklings Challenge?
The Inklings Challenge is an invitation for Christian science fiction and fantasy writers to create stories that fit the Christian worldview. The event runs from October 1st to October 21st, 2021. Participants are divided into three separate groups and challenged to write a story that fits the assigned topic.
Team Lewis
Portal Fantasy: Stories where someone from the real world explores a new world
Space Travel: Stories about traveling through space or exploring other planets
Team Tolkien
Secondary World Fantasy: Stories that takes place in an imaginary realm that’s completely separate from our world
Time Travel: Stories exploring travel through time
Team Chesterton
Intrusive Fantasy: Stories where the fantastical elements intrude into the real world
Adventure: Stories where characters (usually in our world) travel to exciting locations, face dangers, undertake a mission or quest, etc.
These teams will be assigned at random on October 1st, 2023. Writers are then encouraged to write a story before the deadline on October 21st.
Stories should also use at least one of seven provided Christian themes to inspire some element of their story. This year's themes all explore traditional acts of charity and mercy which Christians are called to do for others in need.
The seven themes writers may choose from are:
Feed the hungry
Give drink to the thirsty
Clothe the naked
Shelter the homeless
Visit the sick
Visit the imprisoned
Bury the dead
Finished stories can be posted to a tumblr blog. The post should also be tagged #inklingschallenge, and tagged with the name of your particular team: #team lewis, #team tolkien, or #team chesterton, so they can be shared on the main Inklings Challenge blog.
For organizational purposes, stories should also be tagged with:
The genre the story falls under: #genre: portal fantasy, #genre: space travel, #genre: secondary world, #genre: time travel, #genre: intrusive fantasy, #genre: adventure
Any themes that were used within the story: #theme: food, #theme: drink, #theme: clothing, #theme: shelter, #theme: visiting the sick, #theme: visiting the imprisoned, #theme: burial
The completion status of the story: #story: complete or #story: unfinished
How do I sign up for the Inklings Challenge?
Message this blog via ask box or private message before October 1st, 2023, and you'll be added to the list of participants.
What if I don’t finish by the deadline?
Post it anyway! In the original version of this challenge, Tolkien never finished his story! The idea is to create whatever you can, and we welcome unfinished stories. Show us what you’ve accomplished. If you like, you can also post the finished version at a later date, and I’ll make an effort to share it on the main blog.
What if I finish early?
Post it! I’ll share it to the main blog, and it’ll provide inspiration for other writers. If you’re feeling ambitious, create more stories within your assigned topics.
What if my story isn’t any good? Do I have to post?
No one’s judging this. This is a fun challenge, not a contest, and I hope that it will inspire people to push past that voice of criticism and just share whatever they come up with. If you really don’t want to post what you’ve created, no one’s going to force you to, but I hope you’ll join in the fun.
If you just plain don’t have enough to post–say, if the month gets away from you and you wind up with half a sentence–you’re always welcome to keep working on it and post something more substantial at a later date.
Can I use characters or settings from my other stories?
Absolutely! This can be a great way to expand your story world. As long as the story fits your assigned topic, you’re welcome to use any settings or characters you might have created for other works. However, it’d be nice if the story you write can stand alone, so readers can understand it without any knowledge of other works in the world.
What if I don’t like my team’s assigned topics?
I encourage everyone to at least try to come up with a story that fits one of their assigned topics. That’s the challenge portion of The Inklings Challenge–it’ll stretch your imagination and get you to work outside of your comfort zone. The categories are broad, and you should be able to come up with an angle that interests you.
However, if there’s a particular topic that calls to you in another team’s options, you can stretch the definitions to make it fit your own topic. What’s to say the portal in the portal fantasy can’t lead to a different time period? Explore a secondary world of elves in space if you want to. Be creative!
Does [a certain type of story] fit into this Inklings Challenge genre?
Writers are allowed to define the limits of the genre themselves, and can define it as narrowly or widely as they prefer.
I have never read anything by and/or don't like the author my team is named after. Do I have to write something in their style?
The team names have absolutely nothing to do with the style of stories we expect from the writers. They’re only named after the authors because:
The Inklings Challenge was inspired by a similar writing challenge between Tolkien and Lewis, who happen to have written genres that provide good categories for the challenge teams
Chesterton is another prominent Christian writer whose work dealt with fantastical themes that provided good categories for a third team (which allowed me to include the third major type of fantasy).
Naming the teams after the authors is much more fun than naming them Team A, B, and C or whatever.
That’s not to say that you can’t be inspired by the authors or their works if you like them, but please do not worry at all if you don’t.
Do I have to write an allegory or include religion?
You are welcome to write an allegory or to explicitly explore religion if you want to, but you’re certainly not required to. The goal is merely to write stories that fit within the Christian worldview, not to preach.
What if I can’t think of an idea?
Over the course of September, writing prompts will be posted to this blog for anyone who wants a little extra inspiration. The Inklings Challenge directory also has quite a few writing prompt posts from past challenges, most of which would still fit this year’s Challenge.
Do I have to put my story into a tumblr post?
If you prefer to post your story in another format–such as on another blogging site or on AO3–you are welcome to do so, but to submit the story for the Challenge, you’ll need to make a tumblr post that provides the link to the story and tag with all the required tags, so it can be archived on the main Challenge blog.
Do I have to post my story in a single post or can I post it in multiple parts?
You may post your story in as many parts as you desire. As long as they are all tagged appropriately and it’s clear which order they’re supposed to go in, I should be able to find them, reblog them to the Challenge website, and put them in the archive.
My friend doesn’t have a tumblr. Can they still participate in the Challenge?
This is a tumblr-centered Challenge, so for organizational purposes, the writers should have access to tumblr, so they can be notified of team assignments, post their stories, etc.
However, it would be possible for writers without a tumblr account to participate if these conditions are fulfilled:
The non-tumblr writer provides some name that I can use to list them on a Team and that can be used as an author name for their story.
The non-tumblr writer can check the Inklings Challenge blog and find out which team they are assigned to.
The non-tumblr writer has a friend who is on tumblr who can either post the story on their tumblr blog (with proper credit toward the writer) or create a post with the link to wherever the non-tumblr writer has posted the story.
It’s after October 1st and I just found out about the Challenge. Can I still participate?
This year, because of the extreme glitches in tumblr's notification system that puts me in danger of missing someone's message, I'm going to say that, yes, you can. People who sign up after the deadline will be randomly assigned to one of three teams in a way that balances the number of participants on each team.
Can I write fanfiction for the Challenge?
The Inklings Challenge is meant to provide new science fiction and fantasy stories from a Christian worldview, so this challenge is focused on original fiction.
Are there other ways to engage with the Inklings Challenge Community?
There are several ways to interact with the community!
On this blog, discussion posts, labeled "The Eagle and Child", will be posted roughly once a week that provide an opportunity for writers to discuss their story ideas and their writing progress.
@inklings-sprint, run by @allisonreader, provides several opportunities for writers to come together for writing and brainstorming sprints.
The Inklings Challenge Discord provides extra support for people who want to participate on that platform. The Discord is run by @secret--psalms--saturn, and @enjoliquej, so anyone who wants to participate should message one of them for the link.
Is there merchandise for the Inklings Challenge?
Every year, @ellakas creates beautiful stickers related to each of the three teams of the Inklings Challenge. The link to purchase this year's stickers is in this post.

Is tumblr an ok-ish place to just like, info dump about my world and it’s lore, or is there a better place I could do it?
Tex: You can put anything on tumblr so long as you don’t violate the Terms of Service - I’ve seen moodboards, essays, sketches, stories, bullet point lists, gif sets, audio clip compilations, and pretty much anything that the various posting formats can support.
It’s not necessarily something like a catch-all or one-size-fits-all, but I think it helps to think of various websites as boxes with different utilities, much in the same theme as scrapbooking parts. For example, tumblr supports images well, Archive of Our Own (AO3) supports text well, and have the shared similarity of ability to tag posts or works for organizational purposes.
The internet is one, very useful, format to worldbuild, because it has the ability to utilize tools such as hyperlinking and digital archiving. In a previous post, there is a detail about how to organize a digital file structure for one’s worldbuilding to keep track of things, available here. One practice I have noticed among some worldbuilders is the blend of digital and physical spaces; or rather, online and offline.
Offline digital worldbuilding is such things as word documents, saved images, and programs that perform the function of notebooks that don’t require internet access and/or an internet browser. This is frequently supplemented by personal archiving habits, such as a dedicated peripheral drive like a USB, and regularly copying over digital files onto that device whenever significant changes are made or else on a schedule. This is useful for happenstance events like computer failure, websites going defunct, or related issues.
Offline physical worldbuilding is such things as notebooks, drawings or paintings, boxes of ephemera, scrapbooks, and physical copies of the canon media (if the worldbuilding has its roots in fandom). This can include CDs, DVDs, photos, and craft items such as textiles or sculptures. For people that have had difficulties in maintaining digital records in particular, physical copies are often a good method of maintaining linearity of thought - i.e. printing out a Google Doc and putting that into a folder.
Because there’s so many different medias and platforms you can use for worldbuilding, it’s more a matter of which suits you best and for which purpose. Tumblr is a useful component of a worldbuilding methodology portfolio because of its capability to create dedicated posts that can be mixed media, tagged, and archived if one wishes it. As of this time of posting, users cannot currently download an individual post, but it’s impossible to predict a website’s roadmap as it adapts to the changing needs of digital spaces.
One thing I would note is that tumblr need not be engagement driven, in the same way other online spaces tend to be (e.g. twitter). You can make a blog, add restrictions in the form of locking viewing to only logged-in users or adding a password to view the blog, and with the recent update (as of this posting), users can also toggle preferences on how public a post is and also ability for others to reblog a post.
If you’re looking for engagement, this is fuelled by reblogs, which generally depends on the blogs that you follow and interact with, usually by reblogging their posts and also by talking to them. That is, however, a subject of micro-cultures and subcultures therein, which becomes a little bit off-subject to your question and not really within our domain.
