Natsu Harem: Fairy GET! 9/14
We're reaching the tail end of the pack~... Let's put in some hustle. (๑╹ω╹๑ )
Tumblr media
The next spotlight goes to... Yes~... The other half of the Sky Maiden Sisters~... Wendy Marvell~! \(๑╹ω╹๑ )/
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When did they meet?
This one is pretty standard... I don't have to mess around with it too much. Natsu met Wendy during the fateful mission to crush Oracion Seis. The guild that took care of her, Cait Shelter, regrettably had to pass on... They couldn't keep watching over her forever. But this left Wendy-chan open to join Fairy Tail... And they became her new family. Wendy-chan particularly drew close to Team Natsu because of their first meeting. (❋•‿•❋)
There isn't that much to elaborate on, as far as first meetings and whatnot go. Wendy saw that Fairy Tail was pretty powerful, if not prone to going overboard. A bit much for her mild-mannered self... But they proved dependable. They fought to protect Cait Shelter... And Natsu kept his promise~... (❋•‿•❋) It's little wonder she jumped at Erza's proposal to join Fairy Tail... Cait Shelter moving onto the afterlife made her sad, but Wendy resolved to carry on. And it's gratifying to find another Dragon Slayer in Natsu. (人◕ω◕)
Tumblr media
When did they get closer?
Fairly obvious, but Wendy adapted to her new guild pretty quickly. Everyone adored her for being so cute, gentle, and kind. (人◕ω◕) Wendy wasn't much of a fighter herself, though. She knew some offensive-type spells, but she was mainly a healer and an enchantment wielder, which effectively relegated her to support type in battles.
Tumblr media
... And she was pretty joined to Natsu at the hip. (人◕ω◕) I mean, why wouldn't she? They're both Dragon Slayers. Wind and Fire complement each other. Happy and Carla get along... sorta... *let's just sidestep Happy's repeated flirty attempts that Carla shot down~...* (人◕ω◕);;
Honestly? Wendy sees Natsu as a big brother figure. That defines the nature of their relationship for much of the time they're fighting Dark Guilds and kicking butt in the Grand Magic Games. She'll occasionally help alleviate his motion sickness, but repeated use of her Troia spell makes it less effective... And besides, eventually Wendy comes down with the same dumb illness. Wendy-chan really doesn't like transportation, just like Natsu-nii. (人◕ω◕)
When Fairy Tail disbanded after Tartaros, Wendy was left crestfallen, her home once more torn away from her... That brought her to Lamia Scale, to be with Chelia for a year... And then Natsu came back, even though she was pretty determined to stay with Chelia. (人◕ω◕) We know how that turned out, though~...
Tumblr media
When did friendship turn to something more?
This is the million dollar question. (人◕ω◕);;; See, up through Alvarez... Wendy was focused on this idea of Natsu being her big brother. That's why she came to love and adore him so much. (人◕ω◕)
... But as time went on, Natsu became much more... popular. Cana-san. Kagura-san. Yukino-san. Natsu-nii even won over Juvia's heart...! And not to mention former enemies like Brandish-san, Sayla-san, and... others. *spoilers* (人◕ω◕) This doesn't even cover Lisanna, who's been close to Natsu for ages - same with Erza-nee and Mira-san... It was getting harder and harder to spend time with Natsu, and Wendy couldn't quite figure out why a part of her was frustrated and... furious.
And then one day, a while after the war with Alvarez, Chelia asks Natsu out. (人◕ω◕);;;;;;;; That was definitely the proverbial final nail in the coffin. Chelia's a few years younger than Natsu, who's about the same age as Erza. He's 20, Chelia's 16. ... Wendy is 13. Wendy should be older (even if that placed Natsu-nii even older, too), but because of Fairy Sphere shenanigans... Put simply, Wendy got shafted. Hard. (人◕ω◕);;; It's bad enough she has to be around big boobs so often... But for all these well-endowed women to be eating up all of Natsu-nii's time and affection...?
Wendy thought long and hard on it. While other girls gave their vetoes to Chelia's request for a date with Natsu-nii, and her beloved Natsu-nii agreed to go out with Chelia, Wendy stewed in her corner and mulled over why she was so miffed. It's not like she didn't want Natsu-nii to be happy. Or Chelia. (人◕ω◕);;; Wendy just... She was tired of getting sidelined by all these other women that weren't even Dragon Slayers!! ... Erza-nee is debatable given her mum, but really. Every single one of these "love interests" for niisan didn't have that pedigree that Wendy thought she had.
... Carla told her she was going a bit loopy from thinking too hard, but Wendy knew she wasn't crazy. Where was her Natsu-nii time?! It's not fair!!! (人◕ω◕);;;
So Wendy came to the conclusion that, at some point, she'd fallen for Natsu. ... And she had. She just didn't want to admit it because of the... age gap between them. Seven years apart was pushing it. But can you blame the poor girl? Natsu was her most important person, besides Erza-nee and Carla. And all these hussies... *cough* All these other women eating up Natsu's time and energy... (人◕ω◕);;;
Tumblr media
But this is fine. Wendy is... fine. (人◕ω◕);;;;;;;;; While she doesn't have... much... of a problem with her petite size, the issue for Wendy-chan is closing that age gap juuust a little bit. (人◕ω◕);;;;;;; And since she specializes in Enchantments, Wendy researches long and hard... And finally invents a spell to age her up. ... But just aging up to Natsu-nii and Erza-nee's age feels like cheating. So Wendy does the "honorable" thing and makes herself on even footing with Chelia. That tramp... Er. Her bestest friend in the whole wide world. (人◕ω◕);;; Wendy ages herself up to somewhere between 16 and 17. Why? Because screw you, Wendy-chan deserves this after Fairy Sphere robbed her. That's her line, and she's sticking to it. (人◕ω◕);;;;;;;;;; Now, while she gets a little taller, she's still about Chelia's height. ... But regrettably not as well-endowed. Because of course her genes hate her. (人◕ω◕);; Her spell made her age naturally, so she had no say in how curvy she was.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Of course everyone noted what Wendy did to herself... And how she practically pounced on Natsu and showed the depths of her love for him with a passionate kiss.... (人◕ω◕);;; Wendy-chan would love to ask Natsu out, but for right now this is all the courage she possesses. She's not as brave or confident as Chelia. ... Or Erza. Or... (人◕ω◕) You get the idea. Wendy doesn't ask him out, but she stumbles over a very nervous confession to Natsu...
Tumblr media
... Which Natsu rolls with. Wendy's pretty important to him, and she looks pretty cute regardless of age. But it's certainly less weird if she's as old as Chelia. (人◕ω◕) The other members of the harem are... leery of Wendy coming forward so boldly, but it's not like she had much choice. Not with territorial Sayla, bossy Brandish, clingy Juvia, determined Kagura... Wendy might have blindsided them all, but you better believe they won't lose to her. Natsu belongs to everyone~... (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕) At least Chelia-chan is pretty accepting of Wendy's advances on Natsu. Their bond is still strong.
Although that bond of theirs does nudge other members of the harem to find tentative partners... Assuming they don't already have one. (人◕ω◕) Cuz with Wendy and Chelia teaming up to hog time with Natsu... Measures must be taken to ensure the scales stay even. ... Or else. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)

I finally got around to play Cosmo Canyon! Took me a while to get there bc family stuff and i was feeling a bit under the weather some days, but today I'll finish the protorelic quest and then do the side quests and that was it for Cosmo Canyon...
Thoughts on story: RED (or should I say Nanaki?) IS SO CUTE LEGIT A TEENAGE BOY TRYING TO PASS AS AN ADULT MAN the way I was hollering. The city is beautiful and very huge... Felt very overwhelmed when I first got there. Generally loved the focus on Red, had lots of questions about him originally. Now I wonder how old his kind can get if he's like 15 in human years but actually 48... huh. The story with his parents is pretty basic i guess? Didn't really blow me away, i could see the turning point coming from a mile away but it was very sweet nonetheless. Really enjoyed the gameplay during the trial, the Gi enemies WERE SO COOL. Also loved that we could scale walls with Red, I wish we could do that in the open world... The final boss almost kicked my ass because I'm not used to playing Barrett and Red actively, BUT THEY SLAYED. Shoutout to Titan, homeboy always comes through for me. Also couldn't help but be reminded of Genshin's Misty Dungeon event during the trial. And the mines of Moria. My weird interests meet in the most unusual of circumstances sometimes. My brain does that occasionally.
Also, the Gi Nantaak first scared the shit out of me. Then he kinda reminded me of Vision (you know, from Marvel) but that also wore off. The random sequence with Zack almost made me cry again. Whenever I see him on screen something just urges me to. Him and Biggs also looked so damn good during that entire scene I took so many screenshots 😭 I'm still so confused tho... Biggs ended up in Zack's timeline because of the Whispers/ the Wind for whatever reason? Really have no clue where they're going to take this part of the story, I just know it's going to hurt me so bad in the end.
I also let out an audible ' Hear me out' when they showed Seto... I'm not sorry.
On the exploration side of things... The flying chocobos are so confusing to me, I started the chocobo quest right as I landed in Cosmo Canyon and I immediately failed the first part because the controls as you fly are just??? Therefore everything that was placed so that you could only reach it through flying was a bit of a pain at first. I figured it out eventually, but i still haven't continued that quest... Also saw a bunch of people complain about this so at least I'm not the only one struggling lol.
Everything Else was very enjoyable tho. Go to explore team was Cloud, Aerith and Cait Sith this time and I gotta say Cait's Moogle Magic skill is busted I was so surprised when a full ass Ifrit suddenly stood on the field 😭 Bahamut Arisen was a surprisingly quick clear after I got all the Intel, Tifa just died in like the last minute. A worthy sacrifice tho. Immediately tried Bahamut while beating the Jabberwock, huge Dragon Battle was crazy insane to watch. He's busted. Put him on Cait for now.
I haven't finished the protorelic quest yet, but I didn't expect it to have this much lore right from the get go... So you're telling me Wedge is dead in Cloud's timeline???? Just like that?? The whispers killed him? MY BOY. Also Yuffie's friends (?) - the NPC's for that quest - immediately reminded me of Bella's High School friends in Twilight 😭💀 They just look like they belong in these movies idk
Now I wonder if the last two parts of the protorelic quest are gonna be as much a pain in the ass as Fort Condor was... I managed to clear the first two stages quite quickly so I hope it's gonna be okay with the AI helping me for the configuration part...
So that's that! Will definitely finish Cosmo Canyon tonight and then maybe start Chapter 11... Just a few more steps until meeting Vincent. Heard Chapter 11 was quite long so it'll probably take me the whole weekend to finish next to work and all. My goal of finising this game before easter is probably gonna be left unfulfilled... But I'd rather take my time.
Will add screenshots to this post after I get home from work!

Vi changing, revisited
Actually I think I kind of take back what I said about Vi not changing in prison.
I think it can be read in a different way.
The main thing is that she didn’t change in a way that we expect people to change in prison.
I think normally if somebody that young goes to prison that long under such bad circumstances (beatings, solitary, separated from her family, having just lost her family, no mental health support), we would expect:
- They come back rougher and hardened and cynical from the rough prison life they had to endure (”I did what I had to do to survive”)
- They come back a complete mess due to all the trauma and mistreatment
- They found comfort in a really obvious ie come out super religious
But maybe the thing about Vi is that she came out of prison even gentler than she went in?
Now Vi before she goes into prison was by no means a bad person. We see her lose her temper in the Enemy video, we see her be short with Mylo, we see her be angry at the enfocers. But of course we also see that she is somebody who is willing to listen when Vander gives her a proper heart to heart and of course we also see her be affectionate with Powder and try to properly juggle her leadership role.
At the end of Act 1, she lashes out at Powder, runs off, regrets it quickly but is then prevented from outside circumstances from reuniting with Powder and talking things through.
When she finally voices her feelings to Powder she says:
I'm sorry, Powder. I never meant to leave you.
and
I spent so many nights in that shitty prison. On the freezing floor, hungry, bloody, counting the hours. The only thing... The only thing that kept me going was the thought of getting back to you.
So she gets ripped out of her life at her greatest moment of regret and she spends years (6-7 years according to the writers!) stewing in her regret. IMO it makes sense that those conditions would cause her to single mindedly focus on Powder and reuniting with her and desperately wanting to do better/wanting to make up for things.
And while it wasn’t the prison that caused her state of regret, it sort of caged it in. I still think that if Vi hadn’t been taken and instead had to take care of Powder and fend on her own, the reality might not have been easy, to have to deal with the exent of Powder’s trauma (this time without help from Vander), but also be faced more directly with the loss they experienced.
IMO it makes sense that if prison did not create the idea that all those deaths did not matter, she still loves Powder, it most likely helped cement that conviction (a conviction that might get challenged as she sees that Powder killed a lot of people since then).
(I still maintain that this doesn’t really fit with Jinx’s complaints against her, after all, why would Jinx have a problem with Vi being more gentle and more dedicated to her than she was already)
Sidenote: thinking about Vi, stuck in her cell, stewing in her regret made me wonder about a different topic, to what extent Vi had the chance to really grieve for Vander.
Any chance that anybody would tackle that as a Vi/Cait thing? Vi opening up to Cait about who Vander was/Cait asking in a quieter moment what exactly happened between her and Jinx/what some of Jinx’s ramblings meant at the “dinner” (”He took everything from us. Right here, he stabbed Vander in the back.”)
Or where Cait’s cop mind quietly kicks into gear (imo her way of thinking is like super on display in the Council Archive thing) (also in my mind Cait’s mom would have to be okay for that to fit the characterization) and she starts questioning Vi about the dinner scene, about what the various other “people” there meant because the cop mind wants to catalogue it and understand the motives and mind of the criminal she is dealing with. (and maybe in the middle of it a worn down Vi goes “wtf? are you interogating me?” and Cait is like “what no? wait, actually, probably yes”).

Hello! I have a sad one for you. Tragic death scenes for everyone! No romance and bonus points for extra suffering. I wanna be hit in the feels as hard as you possibly can.
I’d just like to thank you for enabling me here. If you want to be punched extra hard, I suggest listening to this while you read.
Cait: “Alright, I’ve had enough o’ you! Come get some of this.”
Sole stood beside her, grinning, ball bat in hand. “You take the ones on the left, and I’ll take the ones on the right?”
She hefted her shotgun a little higher. “Agreed. Let’s fuck these guys up.”
The Gunners came forward, and Cait made sure they were introduced to the business end of her shotgun. Bodies dropped like flies, and together, her and sole laughed as the carnage splayed out around them. Blood coated her face, coated her hands, and none of it was hers. Not for a while, at least. Not until the sniper caught her calf. She collapsed, and another bullet sank into her chest, and she toppled to the side with a shriek, squeezing her eyes closed.
She was going to die. At least this was different than what she’d always imagined. At least this wasn’t a psycho overdose or a last losing battle in a ring.
“Cait!” Sole was by her side, rolling her over so she could stare at the sky. It was so blue today, not a cloud in sight.
“Well.” She laughed a little, her own blood speckling her lips. “It’s better than anything else I thought I’d get.”
“What? Cait, you’re delirious. I’m going to-”
“Nah, I’m not delirious. I’m sayin’ I never thought I’d get a blue sky and a friend in my last moments. I thought all I’d get was a boot to the face or some dingy bar, maybe a back alley if I was lucky. But this, this is nice.”
“You’re not going to die, Cait. I won’t let you.”
She waved a hand. “Too late for all o’ that. It’s over. I’m just glad that I managed to do somethin’ decent before I finally bit the bullet. Made a friend, helped some people. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, y’know.”
“Cait, please-”
“Do ya think there’s an afterlife?” She stared up at that endless blue. Calling to her. Welcoming her. “Do ya think there’s something after this?”
They didn’t answer, so she did. “There’s gotta be, right? It can’t- It can’t just end. I can’t just stop.”
“There is.” Sole’s voice was broken, a mirror dropped on a concrete floor. “There is and you’re going to get there and get everything you didn’t get in this life.”
“Do ya think my parents are there?”
“Not if you don’t want them to be.”
She shook her head. “No, I…”
“What is it?” They shook her gently. “Cait?”
Cait was no longer there.
Codsworth: “Well, I say! Such a rude bunch.”
Sole laughed, peering over their shoulder to get another look at the sentry bot that seemed to have lost track of them. “I agree. Is there no such thing as manners these days?”
He hummed in a way that was clearly displeased. “It would appear not, I’m afraid. This one seems to be the type to leave the water bottles lying about willy-nilly. No regard for any sort of decorum in the slightest.”
“Well.” Sole shot him a mischievous grin. “I think we’ll have to teach him a lesson, don’t you?”
“Right behind you, mum/sir.”
They charged out from behind the wall, screaming bloody murder, and he followed as fast as he could, flamethrower powered up and saw blade already spinning. He dove for the other robot, blade cutting into its hull. The flames left dark scorch marks in the paint, and he laughed.
“Good luck buffing that out!”
The sentry bot swiveled, and sole shouted, “Codsworth! Get to cover!”
He saw the bot’s guns start to spin, and he headed for the nearest wall, but he didn’t make it quite in time. The bullets tore through him. He fell to the ground, limp, static crackling through him as the wiring connections were lost. Only his sight remained, and he was thankful for that much, at least, because that meant he was able to watch sole obliterate the bot and then run to his side.
“Oh, Codsworth.” Their hands skimmed over his damaged body. “I don’t think I can-”
“It’s alright, mum/sir. It’s alright. I only regret that I will have to leave you here alone.”
“You can’t.” They were sobbing, ugly sobs that wracked their body and twisted their face. “You’re all I have left, Codsworth. You’re the only person I have left from before.”
“Well, that’s just not true. Young Shaun is still out there somewhere. You’ll find him, and you’ll have a family again.”
“It won’t be the same. You are a part of this family, Codsworth.”
“I’m so sorry.” His voice was quiet. “I wish I could have seen young Shaun again. You’ll take good care of him. You are a good parent.”
“Please, Codsworth.” They seemed to know it was coming time. “Please don’t.”
“I have no choice. Mum/Sir, I- I- I am dying…”
Curie: She pressed her back to the wall, not daring to peek around the corner just yet. Sole gave her a reassuring smile. “Just some raiders, Curie. Nothing to worry about.”
She nodded, the panicked feeling in her chest not abating just yet. “Yes, I am sure it will be just fine. I am just nervous, as I always am.”
“Where’d you go?” one of the raiders shouted, and sole winked at her.
“Should we inform him?”
She smiled. “I think so, yes.”
They popped around the corner together, guns already out, bullets flying through the air to cut into raider after raider after raider. Curie focused on nothing but her aim. Not sole, not any of the chaos around her, just that her bullets found the heads of her enemies. There was something strangely calming about battle. It chased away any fears she might have had, any extraneous thoughts. It was just her, her gun, and the raiders in front of her.
When the last of them had fallen, she turned to sole, who stood beside her. “A good fight, I think. We did well.”
The only response she got was, “Oh, God, Curie! Sit down, sit down. Oh, God.”
“What is wrong?” She asked, then looked down to see the blood-soaked shirt and the holes that peppered her skin. Her face blanched. “Oh, mon Dieu.”
The pain hit her suddenly, and she fell to the ground with a cry of pain, curling in on herself as if she could ease her suffering, tears streaming down her cheeks. Sole cried her name and pulled her onto their lap, and she turned to sob into their chest. It hurt. It hurt so badly she didn’t think she could stand it.
“Here,” they whispered, “please, let this work.”
There was the sharp sting of a stimpak in her arm, but Curie had been a doctor for long enough to know that there were some wounds that even they couldn’t cure. It helped the pain a little, though, and she looked into her friend’s eyes. There were tears carving their way down their cheeks. One blood-stained hand reached up to wipe them away.
“Oh, please, let us no have-” she broke off to sob. “Let us not have tears.”
“You’re dying, Curie. You’re dying.”
“I know,” she whispered. “I know, and I am not ready. I am not ready to go yet. I still have so much to see, so much to do. The projects. All of my projects. Oh, my friend, please, I do not want to leave you.”
“I don’t want you to go.” They pressed their cheek to the top of her head. “I’m not ready to say goodbye.”
“I am not, either. Oh, no, please. Please. Do not let me go.” She didn’t know who she was asking. She didn’t know that it mattered, really. It was all that felt right, and she curled herself further into her friend as the world began to fade out around her.
“It’s okay. I’m right here.”
“Please,” she whimpered, trying to hold on. “Please, do not let me… power…”
She went limp.
Danse: “Come on, Danse. Let’s head to the next settlement.”
He looked up from the turret he was working on and nodded, standing to accompany sole to wherever they needed to go next. It was a settlement day, the two of them taking care of whatever issues had been overlooked in favor of other things. Now that the Institute was gone, they had the time.
The walk to Taffington Boathouse was long, and for a while their footsteps were the only thing that filled the silence. For a while.
He caught the hum at the edges of his senses. All too familiar. He looked up just in time to see the Vertibird pass overhead, see the Knight’s shocked face as they recognized him.
“Damn,” he muttered. “Safety’s off!”
“I’ve got your back, Danse.” They took aim. “We’ll do what we have to.”
The Knights opened fire, and so did they. He took most of the minigun fire, trying to shield sole from it, since he was more armored. But the power armor could only take so much damage, and before he knew it he was in just a frame, and then he was burning with pain all through his abdomen, doubling over with a cry.
With a last shout, sole managed to take out the pilot, and the Vertibird crashed somewhere nearby to shake the earth. He pulled himself free from the frame, falling to his back. Blood dripped down his sides in thick, shining rivers, and he tried not to look.
“I-” He swallowed hard. “I don’t think a stimpak is going to do the trick this time.”
They nodded, settling themself on the ground beside him, pulling his head into their lap gently. He let himself relax.
“I’m sorry, Danse. I let this happen. I should have-”
He shook his head. “You did all you could. I just-” He paused, trying not to cry. “Do you think there’s an afterlife for synths? Do you think that it just ends?”
“There’s an afterlife for everyone, synth or not, and I’m going to see you there.”
“I’m not sure.” He looked into their eyes, into the eyes of the only friend he had left, and shaking fingers reached for the holotags around his neck. “It’s time. You need to really take these, this time.”
“No.” Their face was crumbling, and he knew his professionalism would, soon. “I can’t. I can’t.”
“You have to. You have to take these so you can pick yourself up and move on, and learn to live without me. You have to learn to let me go.”
“Please, don’t make me do this.”
His hand found theirs, and he pressed them into their palm. “Please, just… remember me as I was. A man. Not a synth, not an abomination, but a man who was trying to do the right thing. Stay with the Minutemen. Rebuild the Commonwealth. Learn-” It was harder not to cry, now. “Learn from my mistakes.”
“It’s okay, Danse. I will. I will make sure that you have a legacy.”
He closed his eyes, letting the tears slip free. “It’s so dark. I didn’t think it would be so dark.”
He was losing his breath. He was losing the feeling of their hands on him and the sound of their crying above him. He needed to say something. Something worth living by. Something that they would have to remember him.
“Ad victoriam,” he whispered, and he let himself go.
Deacon: Damn Institute coursers. They messed up everything.
“Please step away.” The courser’s voice was clear, cool, and professional, almost detached. “This is a rogue synth. It will be returned to the Institute at all costs.”
He looked at sole, then back at the courser. They’d taken one down before, right? Right. No big deal.
“I’ve got an alternative idea,” he said, casually wrapping an arm around the synth in question. “I think you’ll like it. It’s called: we don’t do that.”
The Courser leveled his gun. “I said, step away.”
Deacon grinned. “And I said no.”
He tackled the synth to the floor just as the courser started shooting. He didn’t know what the hell sole was doing, but he wasn’t having it. He grabbed his pistol and shot for the courser’s leg. He caught the enemy’s calf, the enemy caught his shoulder, it was really great fun, if great fun involved excruciating pain.
He got to his feet, pulling the synth to cover. Sole was nowhere in sight, and that was probably for the best, now that he thought about it. He wouldn’t want them to risk blowing their cover with the Institute. He should have thought about that before he started shooting, but it was a little late, now.
“You won’t escape.” The voice sent a shiver down Deacon’s spine. “That synth is coming with me.”
He turned to the scared blue eyes sitting next to him. “Listen to me. There’s a stairwell right over there that will lead you straight to the exit. You run for it, I’ll distract him. Once you’re free, head for the Old North Church, and tell the people there everything, okay?”
The synth nodded, and he nodded back. “Alright, count of three.”
They counted together, and on three he popped around the barricade, guns blazing. The courser did as he’d hoped at first, aiming for him, but his attention swiveled and one shot fired in the direction of the stairs. It and the resounding thud as the body hit the floor told Deacon everything he needed to know, but for some reason he looked anyway, and then his body was on the floor, too.
“Relaying to Institute,” the courser said, and then there was a flash of bright light and sole by his side.
“He got me good,” he coughed. “He got me real good, and the synth, too.”
Their voice shook. “I know. Just stay still, and I’ll- I don’t know, I’ll-”
He waved a hand, then brought it up to his face to take off his sunglasses. There wasn’t any point in hiding anymore. “Don’t bother, boss. It’s too late for me.”
“Bull. There’s gotta be something.”
“No, listen. I haven’t got a lot of time here, and-” he choked on his own blood. “I don’t want to waste it.”
He looked up at them, and they were fuzzy. He couldn’t tell if that was from his tears or what, but he just sighed and shook his head.
“Dez is gonna be seriously pissed with me.”
They sniffled. “And why’s that?”
He flinched as his fingers fell away from his wound. “Well, I didn’t get the synth, and then I went and got myself killed. I’m her best-” Another cough interrupted him.
“I’ll tell her you went down after destroying a hundred gen 2s. Sing your praises. You’ll be a hero.”
He shook his head, closing his eyes. “No more lies, boss. I’ve lived a life of lies, and let me tell you, it doesn’t get you anywhere. I’m damn lucky to even be able to call you my friend. I don’t tend to have a lot of friends. But promise me. They deserve the truth about this, at least.”
“Alright.”
“Thanks.” He let out a long breath. “It’ll be nice to see Barbara again. Tell her I did something decent with my life. I-” His throat was choked, suddenly, faces of the Railroad and the people he’d helped flashing before his eyes. “I’m not ready, boss.”
“I’m not, either.”
“It’s just-” He let out another long breath. “Ah, hell.”
“Deacon?” they whispered. “Deacon?”
He didn’t answer.
Dogmeat: Dogmeat was a good boy. When his human told him to do something, he did it. When they had enemies, he fought those who would hurt them. He loved his human. He loved them more than they could ever know,  and he knew that they loved him, too. They healed him when he was hurt and made sure he was fed and always gave him a nice scratch between the ears after a long night.
Dogmeat was a good boy. Being a good boy meant protecting his human from the weird-smelling creatures that were small and shambled with an intent that was clearly not friendly. He was always the first to jump in, even if it hurt, because his human needed help. His human needed protecting, at any cost.
He never whimpered until he couldn’t stand, and then his human was always at his side with one of those pointy things. They hurt, but always made him feel better eventually.
But they didn’t come this time. Not until it was too late, and they held him close and pet his head and did their best to ease his pain. He licked at their face, giving them some last kisses to remember him by, some last reminder that he loved them. They held him close and whispered that they loved him, too.
Dogmeat was a good boy. He hoped his human would find another good boy soon.
Gage: So the Overboss wanted to start shit with the Disciples. That was fine. He didn’t mind that. He did mind that they’d also decided to start shit with the Pack and the Operators. That meant they had no intent to side with anybody, and that pissed him off beyond reason.
He stalked outside the Fizztop Grille. They’d have to come by there eventually. It wasn’t like they could avoid it forever, because it was their main base of operations, and when they did he was going to put a bullet right through their thick skull for doing exactly what they shouldn’t have done.
He waited. He paced around, then he waited some more.
“Come on, Overboss,” he growled. “Just show up so that I can kill you, already.”
It turned out that they were already up there.
The bullet didn’t hit him. It hit the statue next to him, and he ducked to avoid the fire. He could just barely see them peering out the window, leaning into the scope of their gun to put him in their sights.
He shot at them, and they didn’t even flinch, opting to put a bullet in his thigh instead. His knee buckled. A hiss of pain escaped him, and he fired again. A spray of bullet holes appeared in the metal below the window, as well as their arm. Again, they didn’t flinch, and then pain exploded from his shoulder. He clutched at the wound as he toppled.
“Dammit.” He tried to apply pressure, keep the blood inside him instead of outside. “Dammit, dammit, dammit.”
“Having a little problem there, Gage?”
He looked up into the Overboss’s eyes, trying to focus around pain and blurry vision, and all he could say was, “Why?”
“Why?” Their lips curled. “Raiders are filthy, brutish, savages who enslave other people at a whim. All they do is destroy whatever they come in contact with. I wouldn’t let it slide in the Commonwealth, and I won’t let it slide here, either.”
He reached for his gun, but they put a bullet right beside it and he was forced to recoil.
“I just wanted to look you in the eyes for the last of this.” They crouched down to be level with him. “I balanced it all perfectly, just like you wanted. No more infighting. No more blood. That’s what I was supposed to do, right?”
“I’ve had it. I’m done with your shit,” he snarled, and lunged.
They sidestepped him easily, rising in one fluid motion, and then he was looking down the barrel of their gun. His eyes went wide. Their face told him they were ready to pull the trigger, ready to kill him. No glory, no dignity, just another raider bleeding and dead in the dirt.
“No,” he whispered, and suddenly he remembered what fear was. “Not like-”
The gunshot finished his sentence for him.
Hancock: Fuck it.
He snatched another inhaler of Jet, despite that he was high as hell already, despite that he couldn’t even remember why he’d decided to go in so deep tonight. He was angry, he was upset, it didn’t matter. He was high, now. Nothing hurt when he was high.
Smoke poured from his mouth and he leaned back, propping his feet on the couch where sole didn’t sit, where the image his mind had created sat. He put his feet in their lap, because fuck it, who cared what he did?
“I care, John,” they said, and he sneered.
“Bullshit. To you I’m just another strung out junkie anarchist who aims too high.”
“You know that’s not true.”
“Bullshit,” he said again, and felt his high starting to fade. He reached for the next drug. It didn’t matter which one. “That’s why you abandon me every chance you get. You don’t care. You never have. I’m just a damn replacement for whoever you can’t find at the moment.”
They didn’t have anything to say to that.
“I don’t know why I imagined you up, anyway. There’s gotta be some better company.”
“You want to see me,” not-sole said, “so here I am. It’s just not the me that you’re looking to see.”
“Exactly, and that’s why you don’t count. So get lost.”
They shook their head. “I can’t, John. You still want to see me, because you still want to know that somewhere, you’re worth something to somebody.”
“No, fuck you.” He didn’t know how many pills were in his hand. He didn’t care. “All I wanted was a goddamn friend. Somebody who really cared. I thought it was you, and now you toss me away like some sort of… I don’t even know.”
He felt sick. His own friend abandoned him, didn’t want him around. That was why. That was why everything hurt, too. He relaxed a little further into the couch.
“I do care, John.”
“Yeah?” He closed his eyes against a spike of pain. “Try proving it next time.”
When he opened them again, they were gone, and it was just his feet at the end of the couch. He rolled over to throw up and fell into the floor. That was nice. The floor was nice and cool. It was soothing on his face. Everything hurt so, so bad, and his fingers scrambled across the table, searching for a canister of something, anything to kill the pain.
Fuck it.
He took whatever he grabbed and didn’t think twice about it. He rolled onto his back, body screaming in protest. He wished the pain would just go away. Leave him to cry in peace for a while.
Every breath hurt, so he stopped taking them. Every heartbeat hurt, so it stopped beating. Every thought hurt, so John Hancock lay on the floor of the Old State House, all alone, and stopped thinking altogether. His last breath left him in three simple words and a wry smile.
“One last trip.”
MacCready: “Twelve,” sole whispered as they lined up their next shot. “How many are you at?”
“Fourteen,” he said, smug.
“Dammit.”
“Sounds like drinks are on you tonight.”
“Don’t count your chickens just yet, MacCready.” They pulled the trigger, watched a Gunner collapse. “I might still beat you.”
“Yeah, good luck.” He grinned into the scope of his gun as he took aim at lucky number fifteen, who was scrambling to try and figure out where the shots were coming from. One bullet, and that bastard didn’t have to wonder anymore.
They picked their way into the camp when all was said and done, looting the bodies for whatever they could find. Sole triumphantly plucked a stimpak and a handful of caps off a belt before turning back to one of the buildings. “Reckon there’s anything good in there?”
“Worth checking out,” he replied, already heading for the door.
He popped it open, took one step inside, and was promptly blown back out by the grenade bouquet that fell. His hands fell to his stomach, finding the shredded flesh punctuated by shrapnel, and he looked at sole in terror. They didn’t seem any more relaxed.
“I-” He looked back at the wound, then back to them. “I don’t think this looks promising.”
They fell to their knees beside him, clearly at a loss for what to do. “No, I- I don’t think it does.”
“Well, then.” He laughed a little, drily, trying his best to not look. “I guess I’ll get to see Lucy sooner than I thought.”
Lucy. Duncan. Oh, no, Duncan.
“Hey.” He grabbed the front of their suit, gripping it tight. “Duncan. My son. You’ve gotta take care of him, please, please get back to him and…” He was going to cry. He already was crying. His son. He would never see him grow up, never teach him to fire a gun, never get to be the father he wanted to be. “Please. I won’t be there for him.”
“I’ll take care of him.” Gently, they cradled him in their arms, giving him some last comfort. “I promise you that I will take care of him, just like if he were Shaun. Like he was my own.”
“God,” he whimpered, sobs beginning to take him. “I won’t be there for him. It can’t be like this. I can’t go. Not now, not when he still needs me, I- I won’t, I- No. No, no, no.”
The clouds were beginning to roll over the sun. Maybe. Maybe his vision was going dark.
“No. I can’t leave him. Please, don’t make me leave him, please…”
“It’s okay,” they whispered, rubbing his back gently. “It’s okay.”
He couldn’t feel anything. Not their arms, not the warmth of their body, not the shards of metal buried in his skin. The base was dark, and he couldn’t see sole, he couldn’t see anything, just Duncan, just his son, who would have to live an orphan’s life.
“No… please… no.”
Nick: “Are you sure we have to go in there, Nick?”
“That’s where the trail leads.” He stared up at the giant building in front of them, watching the shape of a super mutant stroll across one of the windows. “That’s where the grasshopper is, though I’m not to keen on seeing the inside, either.”
Sole nodded. “Then let’s do this. Together.”
They crept into the building, crouched low to avoid being seen. They peered through the scope on their rifle, and a super mutant collapsed with a sharp cry. They ducked back around the corner, winking at him before peeking back to take aim again.
The place was absolutely crawling with mutants, and they battled their way up the levels. They stayed mostly back-to-back, watching out for each other and only separating when necessary.
“Shit!” He heard sole shout. “That’s a hound. Cover me!”
He spun around, firing at the mutants themselves while sole took care of the mutated dog. They fired back, but he dodged their bullets easily. They weren’t too accurate at the range.
What was accurate was the butcher behind him. Before he even knew what had happened, he’d been knocked off the balcony he was standing on. He slammed into the opposite wall with a crunch before tumbling to the floor. His vision flickered in front of him, and he couldn’t move. He couldn’t even process the pain, really. Everything was broken. Everything.
“Nick!”
There was gunfire, and he caught bursts of the light from sole’s gun in the flickers of his vision. He also caught the shrieks of the dying super mutants, the sound of sole’s feet on the stairs, and then the sudden appearance of their face above him.
“Nick, no.” Their hands fluttered, setting his jaw with a crunch and trying to do something, anything to help.
“Kid, relax. I’m gonna be just fine. I’ve seen worse days.”
They sniffled. “Really? Have you really?”
He didn’t think it fitting to lie, so he didn’t answer.
“You can’t die on me, Nick. You can’t.”
“Listen to me.” He tried to move his hand to theirs, but couldn’t manage it. “I need you to do some stuff for me.”
They nodded, tears beginning to drip. “Anything. Anything you need.”
“First, take care of Ellie. The agency is hers, if she wants it, but she’ll need the support. She hasn’t got a lot in this world, so just hold her up until she can stand on her own two feet again. Second, there are still some cases in the office. Close ‘em. Those people deserve answers, if they can get them. Third-”
Something glitched, and his vision and voice went to static for a moment. With a shake of his head, it passed.
“Third, get your kid back. Find out what happened. Get your answers.”
They smiled, even through the tears. “Classic Nick. You’re dying and all you’re doing is worrying about other people.”
He allowed himself a short chuckle. “Well, sure. It’s easier than thinking about pretty much anything else.”
His vision took longer to come back this time. He was starting to slip, and starting to panic.
“Of all the ways to go, huh?”
He stared at the ceiling. The ceiling. Not the stars or the sun but the goddamned ceiling in some musty old building. He took one last look at sole, then one trembling hand pulled his hat down over his eyes. He wasn’t going to let a rotted ceiling be the last thing he saw.
“Every good crime story has a tragedy, right?” He could hear them sobbing and didn’t know how to console them, didn’t know how to make them understand he’d come to grips with death a long time ago. “You gotta spur the protagonist on to action. You gotta make a death, I just… I didn’t think it would be like this.”
There was no silence, just sole’s broken tears as they held him close. Some sort of error code splayed across his eyes as his vision went dark again.
“I didn’t think it would be like this.”
“I know you didn’t,” they whispered. “I’ll take care of Ellie and the agency and the cases and Shaun, I promise.”
He was too far gone to understand.
“Not like this.”
Old Longfellow: He stared out at the ocean. Four in the morning was too damn early to be awake, but did it really count if you’d never been to sleep? He didn’t know.
Sole hadn’t been back for a while. They’d had business in the Commonwealth and left him here, and he swallowed the bitter taste that that left in his mouth back. How many drinks had he had tonight? He couldn’t remember, and he wasn’t about to be bothered with counting up the bottles beside him. He was only just starting to drown out the nightmares of the past, so he clearly hadn’t drank enough.
He set another empty bottle to the side. The darkness seemed to pervade everything. He’d swear he could smell it in the room, but maybe that was just dust mingling with whiskey. It didn’t matter. Nothing mattered. This world was cold and cruel and took the best things and ground them into dust.
Maybe that was why sole hadn’t been back, he thought. Maybe they were dead. It’d be about damn time, because they were always cheating death. Both of them were, but they’d been at it a lot longer than he had, so it was only logical that it would get them first.
There was a scuttling at the door, and with a sigh, he heaved himself out of his chair. The world swam a little, but he could see alright. The gun sat beside him, and he cocked it loudly. The door popped open.
“It’s just me,” sole said, and he sighed. “I wanted your help clearing out some ferals. You good?”
“You keep the strangest hours,” he grumbled, but ignored how lightheaded he was and walked out with them.
In hindsight, he should have known it was a bad idea. He was too drunk to go feral hunting. He was too drunk to do anything except sit at home and mutter about the cruel world. But he went, and the ghouls raked at his skin, and he chalked the sick feeling in his stomach up to the alcohol.
The battle was short, and sole turned to him with a smile that quickly fell. “Are you okay? You look pale.”
“I’m fine,” he said, and toppled to the ground.
Everything was fuzzy, including them, and as they fussed over him he reached up to brush a tear from their cheek. They were saying something, but he couldn’t understand. The words were all jumbled and made no sense. He gripped their hand tightly, feeling himself slip, feeling the darkness come for him, smelling the dust mingling with whisky. God, he wished he had a drink.
“Bury me…” he whispered, “with a… bottle…”
Sole said something in response, but he wasn’t there to hear it.
Piper: “I’m telling you, Blue. This story is going to be the best that Publick Occurrences has ever seen, if we can just get this one bit of info.”
Sole crouched beside her, surveying the streets below them. “And you’re sure there’s going to be a deal happening?”
“Positive. I have a very reliable source, and he’s never led me astray.”
An unfamiliar voice replied behind them, “Things are different this time.”
The two of them turned to find three men, all with guns pointed at their heads. “Don’t try anything this time, Piper. You’re cornered.”
“Well, if it isn’t Alvin Resi himself.” Piper sneered. “Don’t you have kids to victimize?”
“Piper?” Sole’s voice held genuine concern and worry. “Who are these guys?”
“Chem dealers,” she spat. “I caught ‘em selling to kids, getting them hooked on Jet and whatever else so they could funnel caps out of them. They tried to sell to Nat. So, I put an article on them in the paper, and they were out of Diamond City by sunrise.”
Alvin’s face contorted into a sneer. “Yeah. You ruined my life, so I thought I’d come return the favor.”
“Killing me doesn’t get you back into Diamond City.” She tried to sound brave as the fear twisted in her gut. “It doesn’t get you anywhere but with another life on you conscience.”
“I know.” He stepped forward, pressing the gun to her forehead. “But it sure will make me feel a lot better.”
“Get away from her,” sole snarled, and he laughed.
“What, gonna try to save your damsel in distress?”
She saw the flash in Blue’s eyes, knew what they were going to do. She was powerless to stop them from launching into Alvin from the side. She could only watch as his bullet went wide before they wrestled the gun away from him. The two others opened fire, and sole put a bullet in Alvin’s skull before turning on the others. A hail of fire rained down, and sole put them both down before turning back.
“Damn, Blue,” Piper whispered, strangely breathless. “That was impressive.”
A look of concern filled their face, and they crouched beside her. She gave them a strange look. “What’s wrong?”
“You’re hit. A couple times, actually. Dammit, I shouldn’t have let those guys sneak up on us.”
She looked down, saw the blood on her coat, and then the pain rushed in. She doubled over with a shout, and sole caught her against their body. She trembled in their arms.
“Blue, oh God, it hurts. It hurts so bad.”
“I know.” Their body was shaking with sobs, and they pulled her closer. “I know it does, Piper.”
“I’m gonna die,” she whimpered.
Tears dripped into Piper’s hair. “It’s okay. It’s okay,” they whispered. “You’re okay.”
Her fingers scrabbled for sole, and she wrapped her arms around them, leaving red trails where her hands touched. “I- Nat- What are you going to tell her? What is she gonna do? Blue, you have to take care of Nat.”
“I will. I promise you that I will.”
Piper nodded into their shoulder. “The paper. She’ll write the paper, but you have to teach her how to use the press. There’s a stash of caps taped under the coffee table, it’s all hers. The terminal is hers, too. You have to tell her- You have to tell her that it’s all hers, please.”
“I will.”
She sobbed into their shoulder. “Tell her I love her. Tell her I’m sorry.”
“She knows,” they whispered soothingly. “She knows you love her, Piper. She loves you, too. So much.”
“I hope so.” She flinched again. “I didn’t think it’d hurt so bad.”
“It’s alright, Piper.”
She nodded against sole’s shoulder. The pain was starting to fade, and with it her memory, until the only thing on her mind was her sister.
“I wanted to say goodbye to her. How is she going to be without me? Who’s going to help her?”
Sole sobbed. “It’ll be alright, Piper.”
She let herself relax against them. She had to tell them. She had to get them to understand what this meant to her.
“Take… care of… Nat…”
Preston: “Damn raiders,” he whispered, creeping through the halls of Sagus Ironworks. “I don’t think I hate anything more than I hate them.”
Sole nodded at his side. “You know that I agree. Let’s just see what there is here, maybe we can get Finch’s sword, kill all the raiders, and still come home in time for dinner.”
He smiled. “Who’s cookin’?”
“I think it’s my turn tonight. How do you feel about Mirelurk Omelettes?”
“Could be worse, I guess.”
They opened the door in front of them to find the leader of the Forged, and Preston’s eyes widened at the full set of power armor he was wearing. He watched as sole talked with them, convincing Abraham Finch’s son to leave. But the Forged refused to go without a fight.
“Get ‘em!” The boss shouted, so he leveled his laser musket and started picking them off.
Sole instantly rushed the stairs to try to get to the boss. Smart move. Maybe once the boss was gone, the others would scatter. He focused on the raiders in front of him. Lasers lit the room.
His eyes glanced up to check on sole, and just in time. One of the Forged was sneaking up behind them.
“General!” he shouted. “Look-”
A knife found his back, right between his ribs, and he stumbled to the floor. Sole was still fighting, and he reached out for them, trying to call out for help, trying to make any noise besides a faint gurgle of blood. His fingers curled into the grate below him, and he tried to drag himself. The wound burned. Tears dripped down his face, but sole was in too deep with the leader of the Forged, and there were still more enemies, and they needed his help, dammit. He couldn’t let them down.
A boot crashed down onto his fingers, and that got him to scream as bones snapped. The Forged above him laughed, gun pointed at his temple. “Say goodbye, Minuteman.”
He squeezed his eyes shut. Fear coursed through him, as well as anger, because this wasn’t how this was supposed to happen. He was supposed to help people. Rebuild the Commonwealth. See the Minutemen grow to their former glory.
The bullet didn’t come. Gentle hands found his shoulders, and he was propped in someone’s lap.
“General.” Their face was blurry through his tears. “General. You made it.”
They nodded, smiling as their own grief pooled in their eyes. “We got them. We made them pay.”
“Good.” He winced against the pain, gritting his teeth.
“It’s okay, Preston.” They seemed to know it was over. It was too late. “You’re a hero.”
He reached for his musket, fingers stretching, and they reached over to place it in his hand. He pressed it to his chest.
“You’ll be a good General, right? You won’t abandon the people? We need the Minutemen. We need-”
He choked on his own blood, but they knew what he was trying to say. “I’ll carry on the legacy, Preston. You have my word.”
He nodded, closing his eyes. “I never thought-” another cough- “I never thought-”
“It’d be like this?” Their hands rested on his shoulders, and he took the comfort as he felt his fragile connection the living world fade. There was a nothingness spreading through him, and he pictured the people as he fell into oblivion. Mama Murphy. The Longs. Sturges. The Minutemen flag flying over the Castle, with the new Minutemen gathered around the radio beacon.
“No. Not like this.”
Strong: “Strong smash metal men!”
Sole laughed at his side, taking aim with their shotgun. “Get some of this, Brotherhood assholes!”
He roared, laughing with them as his club came down hard on one of their heads. There was a sickening crunch, and before they had even hit the ground he was on another, blowing through the Brotherhood soldiers like they were nothing. Sole’s shotgun punctuated the screams of their enemies, shouts of triumph filling the battlefield.
A hum echoed overhead, and he heard sole’s shout of “Shit! Strong, get out of there!”
He looked up just in time to see the Vertibird overhead, and turned just as the Knight manning the minigun took aim. He jerked, stumbling as bullets rained down on his back, a million burning wounds bringing him to his knees.
“You son of a bitch!” Sole grabbed their rifle, putting a bullet between the gunman’s eyes. Strong watched the explosion of the crashing Vertibird in the distance, then turned his attention back to the person in front of him. Why did everything hurt so badly?
“Strong, you okay buddy? You got hurt pretty bad.”
“Strong…” His hands were covered in blood. His blood. “Strong not…”
“Oh, God,” they whimpered, pacing around him to look at the damage. “Strong, I- You’re gonna be okay, just hold on.”
“Strong will die.”
“No, no, no. You’re not going to die, you’re going to-”
He shook his head. “Death comes to all things. Including Strong. Strong will die.”
“You’re my friend.” There were tears spilling down sole’s face. “I can’t just let you die here.”
“Human listen. Human is strong. Stronger than Strong is. Human live long time, help other humans.”
His arm came up to pull them toward him, one last hug for the human that had been there by his side. The smell of fear was in the air, and he couldn’t tell if it was theirs or his. It hurt to breathe, hurt to think, hurt in general.
“I’ll make those bastards pay for this,” they whispered. “I promise.”
He nodded. “Human make good on promise. Human strong. Strong believe human.”
He couldn’t feel them anymore, couldn’t feel them tucked into his arm, couldn’t feel his legs or back or anything at all. He looked up toward the sky, letting the blue welcome him, letting himself go with dignity.
His breath left him in a long hiss, and Strong was no more.
X6: God, but behemoths were disgusting. Giant, irradiated examples of everything awful about the Commonwealth. And that didn’t even mention the smell.
He fired away at it, feet planted firmly in the ground. Blue light flashed in his sunglasses again and again and again, shot after shot hitting home but not even slowing the thing down. Smoothly, he grabbed another set of fusion cells and loaded them. This creature was dying today, and he was going to make damn sure of it.
Sole was attacking it from behind while he drew its attention, letting them get surprise and strike at opportune moments. It was a good system, because he was better at evading the mutant’s swings, and they were better at finding the weaknesses. He leapt backward to avoid the fist that slammed into the pavement where he had been.
“X6!”
“Yes?” He didn’t look away from his target.
“You’re almost out of-”
He didn’t catch the end of their sentence. Something connected with the left side of his body, slamming him sidewise with a crack. His head bounced hard off the pavement. There was no air in his lungs, just pain, pain, pain in place of oxygen. A prolonged hiss escaped him, what air he had being forced out as he clutched his injured side. The world swam, too bright without his glasses.
“X6!”
The sounds of the battle were far away. Dull pops were sole’s gunshots, the static buzz the creature’s final cry. His hands skidded over his side, feeling the shattered bones turned inward through his lung and intestines.
Hands found his and pried them away to inspect the damage. They were there, worry in their eyes. There was super mutant blood on their face, and he reached up with a shaky hand to wipe it away. A smear of red replaced it.
“Just relax. You’re going to be okay. I’ve just got to get you back to the Institute.”
Their hands fluttered to their Pip-boy, but he reached out to stop them.
“Ma’am/Sir. I cannot relay in this condition. The strain it would put on my body would instantly kill me.”
They looked up at him, eyes shining. “If I don’t get you back, then you’ll die here.”
He nodded. “I know. And I-” He coughed, blood filling his mouth. “I would rather die here, with the one person I have ever been able to call my friend.”
“No.” Their voice was broken, and tears fell down their face as they gripped his hands tightly in their own. “No, I can’t let you. I can’t say goodbye, I’m not ready-”
“You have to be ready. You don’t have a choice.”
“There had to be something I can do. A stimpak, something, please…”
“Listen to me.” Breathing was becoming a difficulty. Like he was breathing blood and blood alone. “You will make a great Director. You’ll lead the Institute to the kind of success we haven’t seen in years. Please, just… Make it worth something.”
They knew. “I will, X6. I promise you, you won’t be lost in-” they sobbed. “I promise you won’t go in vain.”
He nodded, feeling the fear begin to fill him. Death. No one knew what was behind its veil. Maybe, for him, for synths, there was nothing. Was this the true end? The clouds above him were fading. There was darkness beginning to fall in front of his eyes, and he knew. It was over. Darkness. He had to tell sole he couldn’t see-
“I can’t… I can’t…”

Hey man, you still doin these react things? I've got a weird prompt for ya. How about companions reacting to finding an otherwise normal rogue G2 synth that's somehow developed childlike levels of sentience?
Part 2: Forgot to add to the react request about the g2 synth that the synth in question would be entirely non-aggressive & likely even scared of em, cause, y'know, childlike sentience
Part 3: Hey it’s me “regular gen2 synth but with the sentience and behavior of a scared small child” guy back again, because i’m just the absolute god of hyper-forgetfulness haha. This time i forgot to add that i wanted DiMA’s feelings on this strangeness too. You don’t have to lump it together with the response to the original ask, feel free to add it separately as a response to this one later if that makes things easier!
Cait: She... ugh. Usually, Cait had no problem with blasting the synth sons-of-bitches to hell- or anyone else, for that matter- but this one wasn’t really in her way. And she couldn’t help but feel like she was killing a kid, the way it was talking. Cait checked for an “off” switch, just to shut the damn thing up, but if she couldn’t find it, she just ignored it. This wasn’t a normal synth, and she wanted nothing to do with it. Sole could deal with it.
Codsworth: Codsworth always thought synths had a lot of potential to be wasted as Institute fodder, and this proved it. This synth had developed consciousness, for goodness’ sake! Codsworth assured the poor thing that he wouldn’t hurt them, bringing them back to Sanctuary. Codsworth would keep care of them- he was rather extensively trained in childcare, after all, and keeping a childish synth entertained and educated wasn’t much different.
Curie: Oh, this was quite fascinating! She had always wondered whether synths had a psychology, or were merely complex pieces of machinery. The evolution of this particular individual seemed to suggest they had the potential to break past Institute programming. The research possibilities were so promising! Curie kindly approached them, eventually gaining the synth’s trust and leading them back to Sanctuary. She’d help educate them, conducting a few tests on the way, and sharing her results with the Doctors Amari and Carrington.
Danse: Before Blind Betrayal, this synth was simply another perversion of technology, though perhaps worth closely examining after destruction for study. Once Danse knew of his true identity, the lines blurred. Gen-2s never had any sentience, only recycling threatening lines from a bare-bones AI system, but... this one clearly was no longer influenced by the Institute. It held implications about the break between programming and personality, both for gen-2s and for himself. Danse opted to leave them alone. He was too busy thinking.
Deacon: Killing gen-1s and gen-2s had always been a point of contention in the Railroad. Deacon, while convinced of gen-3 personhood, was only barely okay with killing the earlier prototypes. This synth, though, solidly changed his opinion- anything that could evolve the sapience of a human, even a young one, wasn’t just a machine. Deacon tried his best not to scare the synth, getting Sole to help him bring them back to HQ. He’d never hear the end of it from Glory, but this intel could potentially change their organization’s entire goal.
DiMA: He was quite surprised, to say the least. DiMA had always believed he and Nick were the first synths capable of advanced thought, but this new development had changed his mind. Of course, the childlike gen-2 was welcome in Acadia, but DiMA may ask them some questions about their past, their experiences, how they found their way to refuge. At least here, they’d be among their own kind, away from the judgement of the Commonwealth.
Dogmeat: Usually he attacked early-gen synths on sight (or on order from Sole), but this one... ran from him. Put their arms over their head, started rocking back and forth. This synth was scared of Dogmeat. Usually, they just shot at him. He suspiciously sniffed the robot before running to get Sole- Dogmeat wouldn’t attack something that smelled so obviously of fear, but he didn’t trust them, either.
Gage: Nah, Gage didn’t trust like that. Unless Sole explicitly told him otherwise, this thing was getting a bullet between its synth eyes. Firstly, that thing talking like a kid was pretty damn creepy. Secondly, the Institute had enough technology to swap people out with robots so good that family couldn’t tell the difference- surely they could put some funny voice in a gen-2 to gain his trust. Gage would absolutely be shooting it.
Hancock: Whoa, whoa. When he saw how terrified this gen-2 was of all the fighting, Hancock made a big show of putting his weapons away. He wouldn’t be hurting this (little?) guy. Hancock would absolutely never hurt anyone who was this terrified of him, and that included this gen-2 (at least, as long as they’d done nothing wrong). As persuasive as he was, Hancock managed to get the synth to Goodneighbor, bringing them to Amari and some other Railroad contacts.
MacCready: MacCready usually didn’t have any qualms about killing synths- they were just machines, after all- but this one seemed different. It would be like a mix between shooting Nick Valentine and murdering a little boy, which MacCready was not up for. Besides, it... kinda creeped him out. So he stepped back and let Sole take this one. However it ended up, MacCready didn’t wanna be responsible.
Nick: Suddenly, Nick regretted some earlier comments he’d made about how gen-2s were as dumb as rocks. This one clearly had the capability of intelligence, implying that some of the others would as well- the fight for synths just got a little more complicated. Nick tried his best not to scare them, speaking slowly and keeping his movements non-threatening, eventually succeeding in bringing them to Doc Amari. If she could examine them, she could figure out whether this was isolated, or whether all gen-2s could become sentient.
Piper: Once she realized how scared the gen-2 was, Piper immediately put away her gun. “Hey, it’s alright, pal,” she said, utilizing a tone of voice she used on Nat years ago. “I’m not gonna hurt you. Actually, I’ll help you out. I have a friend who'll know what to do with you.” Said friend was Nick, who unfortunately also hadn’t heard of any gen-2s that spoke like children. They investigated it together from there, and Piper started thinking of early-gen synths differently.
Preston: Preston had no idea what to do. He knew that gen-3s were people, regardless of the fact that they’d been built. But he’d never considered gen-2s (or even gen-1s?) smart enough to have a consciousness. For Preston, it was little more than taking out a Protectron. This synth made him re-evaluate that worldview, and he instantly felt guilty for all the gen-2s he’d killed over the years. How many of them were on the brink of sentience? Eventually, he brought them back to Sanctuary, maybe had Curie have a look at them.
Strong: Strong was initially confused. This was not how metal men talked. This was how small humans talked. It was strange. However, this did not change Strong’s impulse reaction, which was to smash the metal man into tiny pieces. He didn’t like metal men. Of course, if Sole told him otherwise, he listened, but not with any small amount of angry protestation. Metal men were enemies- this one talked funny, but it was still metal.
X6-88: This had... broad implications. Gen-3s had been going rogue practically since their invention, an unfortunate side effect of such advanced thinking. But gen-2s had never defected, had never shown any psychological development akin to this individual’s. X6 insisted on bringing the synth back to the Institute for study, so scientists could determine whether this was an isolated occurrence or the beginning of a pattern. If it was the latter... besides some troubling questions raised about synths, X6′s branch of the Institute would soon be expanded.

_____________________________________
Other info:
Hazel was a successful lawyer before the war. She was a well-liked member of the Nash & Hobbs Law Firm, which had liberal leanings throughout its lifetime. She was accused of being a communist multiple times in her career, and went up against obstacles most wouldn't be comfortable with, but didn't quit. She only took a break because she had a baby and want to spend a year off to take care of him, having the ability to work in an advisory capacity at that time.
Her relationship with Nuka-Cola has so much baggage. She doesn't really like the flavor or caffeine kick, but will drink Nuka-Cide when she needs a pick-me-up. During her career, she defended the company's copyright issues regarding Nuka-Quartz and Vim Quartz, which made her "Nuka-Girl" in the eyes of most who didn't know her personally.
An awkward part of her new life is finding love. See, she's attracted to both Cait and Piper, both physically and romantically. The options are choosing one or the other. Polyamory might no go over well with Piper. She's currently in a relationship with the reporter, but she's trying to broach the topic of adding to it.
The part of Hazel some are appreciative of while other despise are her chess master mentality. Everything is a game of wits to win, but that hasn't gone well. In her fight against the Institute, she was juggling everyone to get the best possible result, but made mistakes along the way. In her adventure into Fair Harbor, she tried to do what was necessary to minimize casualties while keeping the peace, but found little comfort in what she'd done. She tries to be clever, but that hasn't always paid off.

List-O-Muses
So, I have a lot, a few I cannot remember, a few I’ve never put on Tumblr... So I shall put up a list of them all... by category! Only certain muses will get an explanation and not all have blogs, the ones I remember that do will have them!
Also some blogs might have autoplay, I will label the ones I remember. Some of these blogs have not been touched in years, I apologize
Muse I’ve Had since Before Tumblr
Lexara (OC)- Originally a special agent of some kind, I made her around about 2005, when I first started to read Manga and started drawing characters. She had short hair- Like me at the time, and she was tough and rugged... because my protected catholic ass hadn’t learned the word ass or any swear word ever.
Muses I’ve had on Tumblr
Category 1- KH and FF
Leon/Squall (Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy VIII)- This blog still exists for the nostalgia. I don’t rp on it, but this was my gateway to RP in 2011 on this sight. I made it to be on an AU KH RP community, but it never happened, but I found some of my oldest and closest friends there, so yaaaay!! URL- http://transient-awoken.tumblr.com/ AUTOPLAY WARNING

B.B. Hood (Darkstalkers)
Sesshomaru (Inuyasha)
Category 5- OC Misc (same as above, but OCs)
Xurik (Kingdom Hearts)- Based off of a story I wrote for FANFICTION.NET (so ages ago) And never put up... I also have to heavily edit it, my vocabulary had found out about words such as ‘damn’, ‘shit’, and ‘fuck’ and I thought it was cool to use it a lot. I’ll take a pic of that notebook one day. it is a MESS. URL- http://ashenxheart.tumblr.com/
Kirara (Naruto)- A ninja with a demon that had an amazing voice, used songs to buff and debuff her allies and enemies.

Riboruba (Final Fantasy VIII and Kingdom Hearts)- She is the personification of Squall’s/Leon’s Gunblade! Fun Fact: Riboruba is the Japanese pronunciation of Revolver, to which that is the style of Gunblade Squall has.
Category 6- Main Characters that are heavily AU-d
AU Abridged Yami Bakura (YGOTAS and Kingdom Hearts)- Yes... a parody character, which is it’s on AU in a way, in an AU where he is a keyblade wielder................................ tada! I made this with my good friend millennium-hearts at a con, and because of this blog we are practically family. URL- http://thiefxkeybladerxbakura.tumblr.com/ Possible AUTOPLAY WARNING
AU Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)- He is basically Sephiroth, but winning, the world is pretty much dying/almost dead, so like.... Worst Case Scenario/Apocalypse AU
AU Nylocke (TOME) I’m putting this here because this is the Nylocke that is apart of the Omega Timeline. Where Nylocke had a twin brother (Nye is Colin-based on tta Nai’s name, and Martin- because Martin Billaney), who died. He is also the world’s best hacker, even better than the main villain of the blog, which was revealed once, but never by name. URL with Omega.
Hao Asakura- This was semi-based on the manga and the anime mixing. the story the blog was based off of is actually still on Fanfiction.Net i named Angel of the Devil (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6203556/1/Angel-of-the-Devil) Feel free to read it! There are 9 chapters!
Glitchy Red (Pokemon Creepy Pasta)- He was based off of many different piecemeal creepy pastas (Lost Silver, Pokemon Black, Strangled Red, Glitchy Red, small stories about the candle instead of flash, but used in a house it would burn it down, and the rope inside would make you hang yourself). This blog got me into KORN.
Category 7- Muses on Blogs that belong there, but are not the main reason people went to said blog
Xirra (TTA)- She is a re-purposed character with a whole new look to fit into TOME, and I used her on Remorse for Mistakes
Darkeyes (TTA)- Much Like Xirra, but never got onto the blog much.
Demon Eyes Kyo (Demon Eyes Kyo)- I read this manga in the 6th grade... it is fucking bloody and gory, so don’t look it up if you are weak stomached. I used him as the Guardian Spirit of Hao on his blog instead of the Fire Spirit.
Beelzemon (Digimon)- I had him on a blog I have yet to mention, but you’ll see why I haven’t yet, that blog is in a category all of its own~
Keldeo (Pokemon) He made a brief appearance on Kirb/Zetto blog... Chris named him Vic........ because voiced by Vic......
Muses I’d love to make, but I finally have self control so I won’t make them
Infinite (Sonic Forces)- Because he is my super floof boy and I must PROTECC
Qrow Branwen (RWBY)- I must protecc the birb boi too
THE LUKA-POCALYPSE I have had a lot of Luka’s in my time RPing, and I loved the name so much, I use it as my online pseudonym now... now you will learn where I get it from!
Luka Crosszeria (Uraboku)- This was the man I fell for, he is extremely loyal and protective of the one he loves through every reincarnation they have, and will do anything, even betray his own kind for love. So in a way, I can relate. I want to do the same with my friends and family and girlfriend. This is the blog Beelzemon is on.  URL- http://crosszeriaxbetrayer-blog.tumblr.com/ AUTOPLAY WARNING
Luka Crosszeria (Final Fantasy XIV)- She is my character from my favorite and most played MMO. And while she no longer has a blog, she does have an instagram! URL- https://www.instagram.com/luka_of_eorzea/
Luka Cross (OC- No other affiliation)- She is a girl with the power to summon elementals. From fire and ice spirits, to even the goddess of the moon. Her goal is to gain the power of Elder Summoning. Aldo Omega is in this AU as the guardian of the Library of Summoners, and he is an Elder Summon.
Luka (TOME)- She is the little sister of Xirra. A different kind of virus, hers is a contact epidemic virus that spreads through touch. She has her hands covered at all times, and is very shy, but is almost second to none in hand to hand combat, being at least 30 time stronger than her just 4 foot stature would lead you to believe. she is also a lolita that wears extremely tall boots, and yet she is still very short... like just under 5 foot short. Ok, ok, so companions react to finding Sole spent ALL NIGHT hanging up Christmas lights on every single house and tree in Sanctuary. (Even going so far as to build a separate generator exclusively to power said lights)
I wrote this as Sole showing companions this at night. I hope that still captures your vision when you sent this reaction! Wish I could have posted this closer to Christmas. Sorry for the wait
Cait: Sometimes when Cait drifted off to sleep in the cages, the lights would blur together as she closed her eyes. It was the only time she felt calm in those days. For those brief seconds before blissful sleep, the world was nothing but twinkling white lights, and she was safe. That was what the decorations in Sanctuary reminded her of. When Sole asked how she liked them, Cait cursed under her breath. She realized how much Sole really cared for her. When words failed, Cait gave them a hard slap on the back. “You outdone yerself, darln’. I’ve never seen anythn’ more beautiful. Besides me-self in the mirror, ya know?”
Codsworth: His metal body shook with glee, and Sole had to hold him steady. The last thing either of them wanted was for him to blow a fuse. “This is just like before the war!” Codsworth exclaimed. He could picture Sole and their spouse holding baby-Shaun as the naughtier children of the town ran up and down the street. The Rosa family would be playing Christmas music through their new record player, which would wake up half the neighborhood. Codsworth would fix Sole hot chocolate, and listen to them tell him what a great help he was.
When Sole noticed Codsworth had fallen silent, they placed their hand on his side reassuringly. “Me too, pal,” Sole said. “I see it too.”
Curie: Curie had read about this tradition back as a Miss Nanny, and it was something she assumed Sanctuary couldn’t afford. She was mostly impressed that Sole made an entire new generator. Her friend was both kind and savvy. Curie walked under the twinkling lights, and ran her fingers over the warm bulbs. She wanted to feel every sensation. She wanted to see every light.
“This is… so wonderful, Sole.” When Sole frowned, Curie tilted her head inquisitively.  Sole reached out to brush away the tears that fell down Curie’s cheeks. “Oh, not to worry, madame/monsieur. These are happy tears. You have given Sanctuary a wonderful Christmas present. All I got you was a textbook. I hope it will still suffice, yes?”
Danse: Maxon occasionally allowed soldiers to decorate the Prydwen. The festivities were usually confined to their share quarters, and consisted mostly of a small fake tree and a few fairy lights. When Danse took in the old magazine-worthy spectacle, even his stoic demeanor couldn’t hold back a beaming smile. “Outstanding, Sole,” he said. He couldn’t tear his gaze away from the lights, so he placed his hand on Sole’s shoulder to let them know they had his attention. “I can’t believe you did all of this by yourself. I’m impressed.” The handful of settlers in Sanctuary were just stepping outside to take in the view, and pride swelled in Danse’s chest. Their faces were so joyous; eyes widening and smiles tightly stretching. “So is everyone else. You seem to find a new way to make the Commonwealth a little brighter every day. Um… literally.” Sole snorted at his unintentional joke.
Deacon: Sole managed to evade Deacon’s watchful eyes long enough to give him a surprise? He didn’t believe it until he saw Sanctuary lit up in every color imaginable. He had seen what Diamond City put out on Christmas Day, and a few pre-war holiday catalogs. But a neighborhood covered in festive lights? This was uncharted territory. He was conflicted with the urge to run down the street like a little kid, or badger Sole about how they sneaked out of HQ for an entire night without him knowing.
“Okay, for once in my life, I got nothing.” Deacon’s fingers lingered hesitantly at the edge of his sunglasses. He wanted to take them off and get the full effect, but couldn’t risk someone seeing his eyes. Couldn’t risk being vulnerable. “You outdid yourself, Sole. I’m in awe of your awesomeness. Aghast at your flabberghastedness. Amazed at your ama-” Sole cut him off with a soft punch to his arm. Deacon winced, and went to reach for the tender spot. When Sole had turned their head away, he instead used his hand to grab their shoulder. “When everyone goes to bed, let’s go back out here, okay?” Deacon furrowed his brow. He seemed so serious he might actually be sad. “I wanna come out here without my shades, you dig?” Sole definitely did, and responded with a quick side-hug that Deacon actually reciprocated.
Dogmeat: The puppy absolutely lost his shit. Dogmeat barked over and over again as he ran up and down the streets. Sole gave up on trying to corral him, and let the pooch run out his energy. The twinkling lights along the houses and in the trees both confused and excited Dogmeat.  He knew it couldn’t be the work of enemies. Look at how happy Sole was. Since Sole was happy, so was Dogmeat. He tried to nip at the strings in the bushes, but Codsworth shooed him away. What a great night to be a dog.
Gage: When Sole eagerly led him in to Sanctuary, he got the same feeling when they had restored power to Nuka World. The sudden explosion of light across the park made each bulb twinkle. He hadn’t expected such a warm feeling in his chest as the rides started up and raiders explored their bases with childlike wonder. And as he watched the other settlers gaze up at the houses with amazement, he couldn’t be more impressed with Sole if he tried. “Well shit, boss. I dunno what to say. Every time I think you’ve outdone yerself you pull something like fucking… like… well, like this, I guess.” Sole noticed Gage was blushing. Their raider friend wasn’t usually flustered. The fact that he trailed off to explore the settlement reaffirmed how comfortable he felt around his Overboss. Too proud to show Sole he cared, but contented enough to flash them a smile before he walked away.
Hancock: “You did all this by yourself? Shit. All I got you were some socks.” Hancock stood in the middle of the road to get the best view of all the houses. He had tried to decorate Goodneighbor before, but the lights usually were stolen by the end of the evening. It was hard housing the kinds of ruffians he ran with; especially when they were particularly ungrateful guests. Seeing Sole smile under a soft spotlight of red and green made his chest swell. Hancock didn’t know what he did to deserve a friend as selfless as them. “I’m putting you in charge of our little Christmas party in The Third Rail. Unless…” Sole cut him off with a curt wave of their hand. They were not moving the drifters of Goodneighbor in to Sanctuary for the night. Even if it was Christmas.
MacCready: MacCready squealed like a kid on Christmas Day as he ran across the bridge to Sanctuary to look at the lights. When he did work for the Gunners, he sometimes found himself perched up high on a building. He could see Diamond City sparkling in the distance, and thought that had to be the brightest thing left on Earth. As he walked through the streets and gaped at Sole’s handiwork, MacCready knew he was wrong.
“This is amazing!” MacCready was so excited that his voice cracked at the end; his pitch so squeaky Sole thought he was having a panic attack. “God, what I would have given to see this as a kid. Can we show this to the tykes in Diamond City? I know a handful of ‘em that could really use this. Actually, just last week -” MacCready was telling Sole something important, but they had stopped listening. It was the first time Sole saw him want to give something back. They knew he had a soft spot for children, but to sacrifice their settlement just to show some strangers holiday cheer? It was the best present MacCready could have given Sole for Christmas.
Preston: Preston had wondered why Sole wanted as many Minutemen to report to Sanctuary up until the moment he saw the colorful lights. Every house and tree was decorated in holiday cheer; something only Sole could ever pull off. Since the first time they met, Sole did nothing but give and give to the people of the Commonwealth. When they asked Preston if he liked their work, he took off his hat in awe. His reaction was humble; Preston’s gaze softly fell on Sole to show tears running down his flushed cheeks.
“You’re really something, you know that?” he whispered. “I didn’t think I’d be this choked up. I just…” Sole pulled Preston in to a hug as the accompanying Minutemen left to explore the town. “Thank you, Sole. For everything.” Preston didn’t know how to make it up to his General, but he knew he would do anything to prove his loyalty.
Piper: “Jesus…” Piper didn’t know what else to say. As soon as Nat saw the bright lights, the little girl ran off to explore. Piper was left behind with Sole to express their gratitude, but for the first time in her life the wordsmith had nothing to say. Sole watched Piper spin around several times to take it all in. When she finally soaked up the gravity of just how far Sole was willing to go to spread Christmas cheer, her expression changed from stoic to elated. “This is the coolest thing ever!” Was Piper actually giggling? The reporter threw up her arms and twirled in a circle; her red coat fluttering and picking up an array of Christmas colors. “So what do you want the article to be called? Ooh! How about: Blue saves Sanctuary from a Blue Christmas. Get it? No? Okay, I’ll work on it.”
Nick: The old synth had memories of Christmases he never took part in. Not really, anyway. Pre-war Nick opened presents. He drank hot toddies and nuzzled with his wife by the fireplace. His new self usually spent Christmas alone in his office because Nick always gave Ellie the day off. When everyone went to bed, Nick walked around Diamond City to admire the lights. It was peaceful. Tranquil. Lonely.
Sole had covered his eyes to unveil their decorations. As soon as Nick caught the first sheen of light on the roof in front of him, he knew Sole had decorated for Christmas. For the first minute, Nick was utterly speechless. Sole poked at his arm and asked if everything was okay.
“I finally have my own Christmas tradition,” he said. Sole wasn’t sure if the flicker in his yellow eyes was supposed to represent a tear. “And it’s with you. My partner.” Nick snaked his arm around Sole’s waist as they watched a handful of Sanctuary children run past them. “My best friend.”
Strong: Strong didn’t know what Christmas was, even though Sole explained the tradition multiple times. They figured the best way for Strong to grasp it was to show him just how festive the holiday could be. Surprisingly, Strong’s face lit up at the colorful decorations. It was the most expression he had ever shown. Sole almost wanted to cry.
“Human cover shelter in bright lights. Easy for bad guys to find human’s home.” Before Sole could interject, Strong added: “But Strong has never seen such color. Everything is glowing. Very bright. Makes human happy. That makes Strong happy.” It was a compliment Sole was more than willing to take.
X6-88: Electricity wasn’t hard to come by in the Institute. X6 couldn’t imagine the massive amount of drifters that went without it in the Commonwealth. Every room underground had their own lighting, and every person had basic necessities like running water. It took a lot to impress him outside of combat skills. And Sole seemed to always be pushing his limits.
As Sole watched X6′s expression, they almost thought he didn’t care for the bright lights. It took a trained eye to notice his mouth slightly agape. Sole knew if he really disliked it, he would have immediately voiced his dissatisfaction. Instead, X6 stayed silent for a long time.
“It’s beautiful,” he finally said. And X6 meant it. Part of him was curious enough to venture away from Sole and take in all the decorations, but the part loyal to them wanted to stay close. “May we look at all of them? I’ve never seen Christmas decorations before.” His voice was so eager that Sole just couldn’t resist.

Companions Get Cucked
Brought to you by the legendary @saintlyguy!
Ada: Any robot would love routine check-ups of their sensitive circuitry or a hot oil bath. Ada especially enjoyed whenever Sole would mod her or give her a new coat of paint. These maintenance sessions gave her such bliss, Ada’s voice would become almost as seductive as conventional assaultrons. Sole had most recently gave her a full assaultron build and an oil rub, which gave her the opportunity to tease Sole with slim yet strong legs and claws that would pin them down while she set the mood with her head laser set on a low and non-lethal emission. Speaking of head lasers, Ada had almost fired when she saw Sole tending to their robot butler. Codsworth giggled as Sole made him into a Mr. Gutsy. Ada knew that Sole was just a friend, but it was at the robot workbench where she had found more than just a personal mechanic.
Cait: After asking Sole if they felt anything between the two, Cait had no idea that the sentence “We’re the best of friends” would cause her such distress. Just friends don’t care like Sole does for Cait. Just friends don’t check up on each other at almost any hour just to make sure the other is still there. Just friends don’t hide beneath their collar whenever Cait would tease Sole about snuggling or her ass. The mindfuck of “just friends” ran through Cait’s head as she perused through the pictures of Sole with Nate/Nora hung throughout their house. She envied how Sole’s spouse had experienced such unrelenting love. Then it hit her: “What if I was more... womanly?” Cait wondered as she saw Nora in colorful dresses and skirts. That night, Cait had a surprise for Sole as she snuck to their room in a summer dress she had “borrowed” from their attic. This would be her second chance at being with Sole, that is until she saw that reporter sway out of Sole’s room, wearing nothing but their shirt and appearing satisfied. Years of being alone and denied even a little joy made Cait snap; as Piper cleaned up in the bathroom, she was met with a calloused hand over her mouth. “Who the fuck do you think you are, taking Sole from me? What makes you, Nate/Nora, or anyone else so damn special?”
Codsworth: Memories of Sole and their family helped the butler persevere 200 years of isolation. No matter how bittersweet. Or entirely bitter. Codsworth had recalled one time where he had walked in Sole with the missus/hubby. “Shaun has been put to sleep, would you require anything- ELSE?!” “Yeah. Fuck me right in the- CODSWORTH?!” “Why I say! There shall be no such thing in me!” “No Cods! Wait babe stop, put some clothes on-“ WAAAAAAAAHHHHHH The ruckus had awoken young Shaun, which gave Codsworth a perfect excuse to leave. “Yes! Saved by the baby!”
Curie: New to almost everything human, Curie knew she had to do it all! With Sole. Not only did she want to share every discovery with Sole, she wanted to do everything with Sole. Curie wants Sole. She wanted them... to do everything to her. Curie owes Sole more than her new life; the very person who liberated her from Vault 80 and her robotic confines. She loved them, body and mind. So she made it obligatory to pass by their room every night to check on them. On a routine passby, she heard noises from their room. “Shit.” “Fuck.” “Ow.” This alarmed her, thinking someone was hurting Sole. Expecting to find them in distress, Curie had found Sole destressing. With Gage. Her heart had fell out of her chest and even deeper, as the two lovers stopped and screamed “Close the door! Get out Curie!” Slumped against the wall outside Sole’s room, little whimpers of “No...” and “Why Sole?” escaped her mouth as tears began flowing.
Danse: Power armor was the only thing that made this Paladin feel strong enough to take on the Commonwealth. Now even an X-01 suit couldn’t even hold a candle to Sole, according to Danse. Sole had shown great conviction serving in his unit; getting Rhys to be more of a team player and forming something of a dynamic duo with Haylen. Danse was thrilled to see Y/N bringing the team closer together, but he would like to see the two of them do the same at a much larger scale; he wanted the dynamic duo to be him and Sole. That ain’t happening. One night while sweeping Cambridge, Danse had heard groaning. No. Moaning coming from the old evidence room. Much to his distaste, Sole was on their knees eating out Haylen. Her hands held their head directly in front of her bare entrance. Never had Danse used his authority to undermine his fellow soldiers. That was until he had shouted “Cease this at once!” as Haylen climaxed all over Sole’s face.
Deacon: It was a prank war between best buds Deacon and Sole. Whoopie cushions, air horns, and laxatives brought the two agents closer than a raider and some jet. But this was all a front: Deacon had his shaded eyes on Sole ever since their first mission. This prank war was just so they could spend more time together in hopes that sparks would fly. But it was time for Deacon’s magnum opus: he was gonna drop the L bomb. Knowing that Sole frequents the tombs under the Old North Church, he was going to hide in one of the tombs and pop out wearing nothing but a bowtie and a gum drop bikini (courtesy of Piper). It was after this he’d get serious and start spouting some cheesy sonnets. It was go big or go home. Deacon should have stayed home. While he waited in an empty tomb, he heard to people enter. “Toot that ass Sole!” Wait, is that Glory? Then Deacon heard the two right over the tomb he was hiding in. Then came the moans and dirty talk. “Oh! Oh shit! Glory!” “You yelling Glory! Now it’s time for me to get gory!” Deacon held his hand over his mouth as Glory gave it to Sole. Right. Above. Him.
Dogmeat: You’d only hear Dogmeat growl if there’s an enemy nearby, or if shit’s about to go down. Shit definitely went down when Sole came home smelling like another dog.
Gage: Damn the new Overboss was fine. Especially when dat ass was clad in their vault suit. Gage had an eye for top notch goods. Especially the type of goods you just want to squeeze. The problem with goods like the ones on Sole is that everyone wants a piece. Gage wasn’t always top dog, but he’d need to mark his territory before anyone else could. He should have done it before Mags. Before William. Before Nisha. Before Mason. Gage had walked in on all of Nuka World’s highrollers climax all over the overboss. Everyone except him.
Hancock: Your friendly neighbohood mayor had many partners in his bed. But the one person he needed was Sole. They’re more badass and sexy than any gun that passed through Goodneighbor. He’d trade all the drugs in the world- the Commonwealth- ok in his stash just to have a shot with Sole. But perhaps he should have given more than his chems. A party at the Third Rail meant booze, singing, and dancing. Everyone was going to be there, including Sole. Throughout the party, Hancock kept his eye on the prize; making sure no one else would make a move on Sole. He even hired Fahrenheit, promising her a personal keg of beer. After like 10 bottles of every liquor on Charlie’s shelf, Hancock was off to win over Sole. Surely after traveling with them and opening up, they’d feel something right? Yep. Sole felt Fahrenheit’s hands explore their body as they grinded on her. All Hancock did was watch in disbelief and feeling betrayed, as his Right Hand was the one leaving Sole a wet mess. Leaving then satisfied while he’s kicked to the curb.
Longfellow: It was happy hour at The Last Plank, everyone was there: Sole, Valentine, Avery, Erickson, and even DiMA. As a party started, Sole got dizzy and sat on Valentine’s lap. Longfellow knew there was something up between them, and raised a bottle to them. Then some hussy came up shrieking “Ew. You have sex with that?” Pointing at Valentine. Just before Longfellow was about to throw a bottle at this bitch’s head, Sole drunkenly retorted “Oh yeah? You have sex with old people.” “Hey!” both Longfellow AND Valentine exclaimed. Now Longfellow didn’t know who to throw a bottle at.
MacCready: Yearning for your employer is never good, but for Sole? Mac could make an exception. The two of them even became friends. Sole even helped Mac with his problems with the Gunners and Duncan’s disease. I mean who wouldn’t fall for them? Even Magnolia had her eye on them. This almost made Mac pull out his entire rifle in the Third Rail. But not wanting to upset Sole, Mac only kept his hand on the grip. That was much harder especially when she was holding onto Sole’s arm while they walked her to her room. He nearly pulled his gun when she invited them into her room and sending him away. “Sole, why don’t you get the help a room so that we may... converse in private.” Mac could only comply. His mouth sewing itself shut when he could have just took Sole with him. Now he’s in the room underneath Magnolia’s. “Take that vault suit off and really make me sing.” Mac’s pillow alone couldn’t block the sounds of pleasure coming from right above him.
Maxson: The elder had a good eye for soldiers. But it was knight Sole who had stolen his gaze whenever they were on the Prydwyn. Whether it was them fixing up their power armor or bringing more technical documents, Maxson couldn’t resist dat ass. He was nearly on edge when he saw them in a Brotherhood uniform. The thought of Y/N in a jumpsuit, blue or orange lingered in his head as he went on with his day. The thought was replaced with methods of torture when he walked into Paladin Danse’s quarters only to see Sole harnessed naked onto a power armor station. “So it would seem my best soldiers need a lesson in fraternization.”
Nick: Coming home to the agency was always a pleasure since he’s welcomed by Ellie with a freshly lit cigarette. This became even better when Sole partnered up with him. Now Nick has got two friendly faces to come home to, with the occasional nuzzle with Dogmeat. But what he’d really like to come home to is Sole patiently waiting for him in bed. One night, when Nick fantasized about this treat, he walked in to Ellie bent over his desk, with Sole pounding her from behind. An awkward silence filled the air; it was if you could actually cut through it. Before any more coolant could be used to prevent him from overheating, Nick could only say this: “Ellie. You’re fired.”
Piper: Having Sole as her best friend made Piper happier than she was the day she had met them. But you know what would be better? Unlimited and exclusive access to Sole’s blue butt as opposed to being limited to brief glances while walking behind them. Being besties is great and all, but it would be better to be able to kiss Sole on the cheek (both head and rear). To have someone to warm her bed and wake up with. Since they’re not doing anything, Piper would need to make the first move, so she decided to visit them at homeplate. Much to her pleasure, Sole answered the door in only a shirt long enough to cover what’s down under. It was as if they were a present for her to unwrap. Before she could even get into why she was there, in comes Cait (although she had already came the night before, multiple times). To Piper’s horror, Cait walked by Sole naked just to slap their ass. “How’s that ass darling? I wasn’t too rough was I? What do you think Piper? Too much?” She spun Sole around so Piper could see the hickies, scratch, and spank marks that Cait had left on them from the night before. It was clear that Piper was too late. Sole now belonged to Cait. Before Sole could take notice of the tears welling up in her eyes Piper exclaimed “WELL I HOPE THE TWO OF YOU WILL BE HAPPY! GOODBYE!” After which she stormed off. Before Sole could go after her, Cait had pulled them back. “Didn’t you hear her? She’s happy for us. Now why don’t you make me even happier and come back to bed?”
Preston: “You can do this.” Preston repeated this in his head on his way to Sole with a bouquet of flowers hidden behind him. When a complete stranger not only revives the Commonwealth and becomes your best friend, how could you not have feelings for them? Sole altruism made Preston feel like he never felt before. He’d look into their eyes and the skies the limit. He feels so- so - so- helpless. Helpless as he caught a glimpse of Sole exchange tongues with Sturges. Good for them. Sturges is a good guy. He’s strong. Handy. Not me. And not a virgin. Which Preston got a first hand experience afterwards. Trying to get back to normal, he returned to his usual “Another settlement needs your help.” routine. Which was disrupted when he walked in on Sole playing with Sturges’ tool.
Strong: Fighting beside Sole almost made Strong feel as if he didn’t need the milk of human kindness. Almost. The way he felt smashing skulls with his leader gave Strong purpose and the desire to be Sole’s shadow. So other companions beware: try to avoid Strong whenever you’re with Sole or you may find a nasty surprise. Gage had found a huge turd in his pillow. Cait found a snake in her boot. Who knows what Strong will do next if he finds Sole with someone else?
X6-88: The golden rule of being a bodyguard: Never Fall in Love. At least according to an old pre-war film. Sure X6 has to provide cover fire for Sole almost everywhere they go. There was even that one time he had to carry them bridal style after they had twisted their ankle. But never had he considered that he could have fallen for them. He did grow fond of them as well as concerned for their safety. So he asked Curie, that synth doctor to always check up on Sole after missions. However he didn’t intend on her becoming competition. So it came in like a bullet when he found her undressing Sole. “Maybe it’s just a physical?” Sure. That is if physicals involved the doctor putting their mouth all over their patient. X6 only stayed out of sight so he could exit. This was no big deal. He just had to arrange Curie’s retrieval, or a much preferred extermination.
BONUS:
Shaun: Coming to the surface met Shaun with new challenges and experiences. Sole’s child was unexposed to many wasteland commodities such as radiation and the threat of monsters. Shaun was grew scared upon hearing tales of deathclaws and feral ghouls. It wasn’t surprising that his first meeting with Hancock was that of screaming. After calming down, the two got along fine. This would make it much more easier for Y/N to break the news that they’re together with Hancock. Or so they thought. Disturbed by the humming of Sanctuary’s generators, Shaun left for his parent’s room in hopes that they would cuddle him to sleep. Flipping on the switch, Shaun was met with the sight of Hancock on top of Sole. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH “MAMA/DADDY NO!”
Glory: It was a slow day at Railroad HQ. Everyone important was out helping the safehouses and everyone had a job. Everyone except Glory, who got banged up from her last job. Who knew plasma could cause a life threatening explosion? After being tended to and scolded by Carrington, Glory was left to watch the HQ. Even though she had a limp and couldn’t steady her minigun, she’s still deadly with a railway rifle. So she sat at a counter and ate a wasteland salad. While thinking about tossing a salad. Sole salad. Oh yeah. The newest agent has caught Glory’s eye, and she knows what she wants. Sole shirtless and bent over this very counter. Which is exactly what’s in front of her. “Sorry about the view, it’s hot down here.” Sole had come to resupply and take a breather, holding a cold Nuka Cola on their bare neck. “No need to apologize” Glory said through a grin. Before she could even use a pick up line, in comes Deacon. Sole’s best bud. Hooray... Baldy came in and gave Sole a pat on the butt, earning a small yelp. It should Glory’s hand on dat ass dammit! It should be her wrapping around Sole from behind- Wait. Why are they moaning? “Wait a minute. Deacon do you even have pants on? Are you two fucking? ARE YOU SERIOUS? RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY SALAD?”

Could you do a little bit, only if you want to about fem sole interacting with little kids/infants being really good/maternal and all the companions, romanced please, plus maxson reacting please? And I do have to say it's wonderful reading your work! Think I've read everything you've written here!
The feeeeels. Also, thank you so much! I’m glad you are enjoying my work xD
Cait: Cait leanedback on the wall with her arms crossed, looking around when she spotted Sole, rocking a small baby in her arms, using her fingers to gently coo the babbling bubba. She never thought she’d find herself smiling at the sight of it, because she’dnever been a child-loving person, or maybe she was, and she’d tried so hard topush the thought out of her head. Thanks to her parents.
She watched in awe as Sole leaned in and pecked the baby’shead, lingering as they took in his scent (the new baby smell). Her heart sunkinto the bottom of her chest as she remembered that Sole told her she waslooking for her own child and she really felt for her at that moment. Solewould have been a great parent to Shaun and she would help in anyway she couldto reunite them, not only for Shaun and Sole but for her younger self, wholonged for a mum who actually loved her.
Curie: Curie couldn’thelp but watch Sole with a smile plastered on her face as Sole kneeled downnext to a child, who was interested in petting Dogmeat. Sole stroked Dogmeatfirst to reassure the child, who’d probably never seen a dog before, let alonepetted one. The child giggled as Dogmeat waged his tail at the love and attentionhe was receiving, and Curie laughed from across the way. Sole looked over herway with a smile on her face as she beckoned her over.
Curie walked over, her heart fluttering when she watched thechild reach over and give Sole a hug, Sole wrapping her arms around the smallerchild. She didn’t have much experience with children being locked up in Vault81 for eighty three years but watching Sole made her realise that she wanted afamily and if she wasn’t good at being a parent, Sole could teach her how.
Danse: Sole wasbabysitting one of the settler’s toddlers as they worked, tending to the cropsin the greenhouse. The toddler was sat happily between Sole’s legs as Sole helda book in her hands. She was leaning down talking sweetly to the child as sheflicked through the pages of the book. The child looked up at Sole, repeatingher words as they pointed to the pictures on the pages.
Danse watched silently as he sat opposite Sole, drinkingfrom a bottle of Nuka Cola. Brotherhood was his life and that’s all he everthought until he met Sole, and as he watched her teach the child to read hefelt a pang in his chest. He wanted one. Not just any one, one with Sole, whowas so loving and maternal. He put his drink down and moved so he was sitting nextto Sole, he leaned over her shoulder, resting his chin on it as he listened in.He could see himself like this with his own little ones, now all he had to dowas convince Sole.
Deacon: He’dalways had a soft spot for kids since he was one himself, during his time in theUniversity Point Deathclaws. He thought his dream of having kids would havebeen fulfilled when he met Barbra, but it hadn’t. But now, as he watched Soleplaying tag with a small child, maybe he could finally have that family he’d alwaysso desperately wanted. He laughed as Sole pretended to be disappointed when thechild ‘tagged’ them, switching roles as they slowly chased the child, deliberatelyfailing to catch them.
His heart pounded in his chest at the thought of Solecarrying his baby, the thought of his child padding into his room and climbingin between himself and Sole as they found solace by sleeping between them.
Sole poked Deacon in the chest and he looked up at her in surpriseas she’d snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Tag,” she said with a laugh, running away as she waited forDeacon to chase her, which he did, he always would.
Gage: Gage saw childrenas a weakness, something your enemies could take advantage of and in some cases,he wasn’t wrong about that. But, he started to change his mind when he witnessedSole carefully wiping the blood off of a small boy’s knee. He’d fallen over andscraped his leg whilst playing and Sole had seen him do it.
“Be strong for me,” Sole said as she carefully wrapped a smallbandage around the child’s leg. The boy sniffled, wiping his nose with the backof his hand, “there all done,” Sole said with a smile, she pulled a CottonCandy Bite out of the box she kept in her cupboard, handing it to the boy. Hegiggled taking it.
“Thanks miss,” he said, running off to show his mother. Gagehad seen the whole thing and it did something to him, something he couldn’t explain.Wait, was that, feelings? Oh god.
Hancock: He’drealised many years too late that he wanted a baby, he’d only come to therealisation as he watched Sole fuss over a couple’s new baby, no, after shespoke so highly of Shaun and about being a parent. And even though her missingchild was still out there, she stayed strong, not faltering as the couple askedher to watch their child. She sat on the couch, the baby lying on her knees ashe covered her face with her hands.
“Peek-a-boo!” she said in a baby voice, beaming as the babybabbled and giggled. Hancock found himself smiling at the sight, Sole urged himto sit beside her, but he was afraid of scaring the baby with his less thanideal looks, but Sole assured him it would be fine.
He sat beside Sole and leaned over, he was afraid when thebaby stopped laughing and looked at him, tilting its curious little head.
“Uh, peek-a-boo?” he said in a husky voice. A smile wasbrought to his face when the baby burst out laughing. He may have been toolate, but there were other ways they could have kids.
MacCready:MacCready’s ears perked up when he heard the soft laughter of his son, Duncan, echo through the house. He went to investigate, finding Sole’s fingers gentlydancing at the small boy’s sides as she tickled him. A smile grew on his faceas he watched the woman he loved get on so well with his son, something he wasafraid wouldn’t happen when the two had first met.
“Daddy help!” he called playfully, erupting into another fitof laughter when Sole ticked under his arms. MacCready dived into the room, picking up Duncan and holding him up in his arms, “She’s coming to get usDaddy, runnn!” MacCready darted through the house with the smaller boy in hisarms, the two of them laughing loudly as Sole chased them, “get her daddy,” Duncancalled as MacCready put him down, his dad grabbing Sole instead.
“Nooo!” Sole whined as MacCready pinned her down, ticklingher sides.
“We’ve got you now,” Duncan said sitting on Sole’s stomach,he tickled under her neck, before giving up and laying down on her chest, “I’mtired now,” he said sleepily, closing his eyes. MacCready laid down on theground next to Sole, looking over at her. He’d never been more in love with herthan he was at this moment.
Maxson: Arthur Maxsonwas standing in front of the Signal Interceptor talking with Proctor Ingram, they were in deep discussion about their huge mission ahead and then he noticedher. A smile pinched at the cornersof his cheeks as he watched her, her head tilted back as a sweet and delicatelaugh escaped her lips as she laughed at something funny the squire had said. She was talking to one of the young squires, she wasadjusting his coat before she leant down and showed the child how to tie theirshoelaces.
Scenes of what he saw as his future life with Sole and theirchild flashed in bursts across his mind, and he found himself grinning from earto ear. He wanted Sole to find Shaun and when she did, she could come back andbe with him and they could be a family. He wanted nothing more than that.
Nick: Nick smiledsadly at Sole who was leaning over a crib with a sleeping baby inside it. She wasgently brushing her fingers over the soft baby’s cheek, lulling it with hertouch. Nick couldn’t help but feel sad for Sole as he knew their baby, Shaun, was still out there without his mother and she was without her son. He movedcloser to Sole, squeezing her shoulder with his hand.
“We’ll find him,” he said reassuringly, and Sole smiled backup at him before turning and looking back at the baby. He wondered if Sole waslike this with Shaun when he was born, he was sure that they were.
“I know,” Nick sat down next to her, leaning over the criband smiling at the sleeping baby, he’d could see how good Sole was, and he’dhelp her find Shaun, if it was the last thing he’d ever do.
Piper: “aaandwhat’s his name?” Sole pried out of Nat, who had been confiding in Sole about aboy. She would have asked Piper about it, but she didn’t want to be teased byher older sister.
“Gavin, but I don’t know if he likes me back,” Nat leanedback on the sofa as she sipped on a bottle of Nuka-Cola Cherry. Sole wrappedher arm around the younger girl’s shoulder as she listened to her spill hersecrets in confidence. Neither Nat or Sole heard or saw Piper sitting on thestairs listening to them talk. She wasn’t mad, she thought it was sweet thatNat was confident enough to trust Sole like that. Sole looked over finallyspotting Piper and she smiled at her, receiving a smile back.
She could see Sole being a great parent and that made herheart beat quicker in her chest just thinking about it. Although they couldn’t physicallyhave children together, they’d find a way, because deep down they both wantedit but that was a discussion for a later date.
Preston: Preston stoodin the doorway as Sole kneeled down on the ground in front of the girl, Erin,on the bed. She was tearful, and Sole tried to console her, telling hereverything would be alright. It didn’t take long for Preston and Sole to find Erin’scat and return him to her. She jumped up and wrapped her arms around Sole’swaist, to which Sole leaned over and loosely hugged her back, which made Prestonsmile.
“Thank you, thank you,” she repeated, “here,” the girl helda few bottlecaps in her hand and Sole shook her head as she closed the girlshand.
“you keep your caps Kid,” she ruffled the girl’s hair, “What?”Sole said as she turned and notice Preston staring at her.
“You’re so adorable, you know that?” he said with a heart-warmingsmile stretched across his face, Sole reciprocated the smile, patting Preston’schest as they passed him by. He couldn’t wait to have kids with Sole, if theywanted to of course.
(There was another reactsimilar to this, but I accidentally deleted it when I was looking at it, sorryabout that, I’m an idiot like that xD)

Tiffany Blue 1/1
A/N: Hi, my name is Kari and this is my first one-shot here. This is just something to get my feet wet. I have several stories planned. I know there are many blogs of fanfics, but one more can’t hurt to follow, right? Please excuse any errors. I have a full time job, so posting might not be often, but hopefully it’ll be good quality.
Tumblr media
“How about yellow?” I suggested to Caitlin on our way to work. I was giving her ideas for the color dresses for the bridesmaids. As Maid of Honor we had to come to a decision soon. Her wedding was going to be in a year and there so much to do.
“Gross, no,” she made a face because I knew she hated the color and I laughed. “Maybe blue?”
Our eyes met and we both said ‘Tiffany Blue!’ and then we laughed together. People gave us looks, but we ignored them. On our way, we passed Alexander Pierce. He was waiting for the rest of the World Council to arrive. Everyone knew they were coming since we all got an email to come to work immediately because Project Insight was going to be launched. Caitlin and I were part of the project, so we had to cut our brunch short to come to work.
“Have you thought about who you’re going to have as your plus one?” she elbowed me in the rib as we got into the elevator. Others joined in.
I shrugged. “This thing,” meaning Project Insight, “has been my life for years. I haven’t really had a chance to look.” A lie since I was looking at a certain person since he was defrosted, but that was never, ever going to happen.
“If you’d get over your silly crush on that old man, you’d see there’s some decent guys here. Like Rumlow. I’ve seen him check you out,” she giggled.
I shushed her embarrassed by the people hearing. “Ew, no, dude gives me the creeps. Don’t trust him.”
“You can’t judge a person without knowing them.”
I sighed. “True, but…I don’t want to know him.”
We got to our floor and already there was chaos. Caitlin and I turned to each other and sighed. This was our life, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. We met at the academy. We went through everything together. We encouraged each other. She pushed me and I pushed her. Our friendship only grew stronger with time and I trusted her with my life. We made our way to our designated area. I placed my earpiece in and cracked my fingers.
“You really shouldn’t do that,” Caitlin said in a sing-song voice, but she always warned me and I never listened.
“I like doing it. It relaxes me,” I reminded her as I logged in. She just shook her head.
We were told to get everything ready for the launch. My job was to make sure no one got through the security system. I was very, very good at my job.
“Attention all SHIELD agents,” were the words that forever changed my world. I turned to Caitlin and we both shared confused expressions. “This is Steve Rogers. You’ve heard a lot about me over the last few days,” Steve continued. Agent 13 was right behind us overlooking that everything was going smoothly. Everyone looked up from their screens and listened.
“Some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it’s time you know the truth. SHIELD is not what we thought it was. It’s been taken over by HYDRA,” there were audible gasps including mine. “Alexander Pierce is their leader,” my stomach rolled. I had met Secretary Pierce and shook his hand. I had admired him. “The STRIKE and Insight crew are HYDRA as well,” I turned to my best friend again and she had her eyebrows furrowed.
Her hand was on her gun that we were taught to use. She and I had decided that after New York it was best to always be prepared, so we were trained in combat. She did better than I did, but I still passed.
“I don’t know how many more, but I know they’re in the building. They could be standing right next you,” Steve went on. Caitlin stood up and I stood up with her slowly and looked around the room. We all started to look at each other with doubt, except for Caitlin. I’ve known her for ten years and I knew she trusted me.
“They almost have what they want. Absolute control,” my mind went to Project Insight and what it could do and it didn’t take me long to connect the pieces. It made me sick to my stomach to think I helped with the project. I had designed the firewalls and I knew they were the best of the best. It was why SHIELD recruited me. “They shot Nick Fury,” the hairs of the back of my neck stood up. I had met Director Fury and worked with him because of what I was doing for Insight. I was sad when I heard the news. He was a tough man, but I knew he was a good man at heart. “And it won’t end there. If you launch those hellcarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way. Unless we stop them. I know I’m asking a lot. But the price of freedom is high. It always has been. And it’s a price I’m willing to pay. And if I’m the only one, then so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not.”
The tension in the room grew, but no one said anything. Until we heard footsteps and it was Agent Rumlow coming towards Ben—one of the launch technicians. His cold eyes scanned the room and they landed on me. He didn’t bother to give me a second glance, not surprising. He stopped next to Ben—towered over him.
“Preempt the launch sequence. Send those ships now,” Rumlow ordered.
Ben was clearly flustered as would any good person would be. If he had been HYDRA he would have done it.
“Is there a problem?” he asked Ben and I moved my hand to my gun holster slowly.
“Um…” Ben shook his head and all attention was on him.
“Is there a problem?” Rumlow repeated but clearly out of patience.
“I’m sorry sir,” Ben’s voice trembled. He started to breathe heavily. I knew he had anxiety problems, so I was hoping he was not going to have an attack now because I had a feeling Rumlow was not going to go away easily. He made eye contact with me and I pleaded him to be strong and do not launch anything. “I’m not gonna launch those ships. Captain’s order.” I sighed in relief.
Rumlow withdrew his gun and moved behind Ben pointing it at his head. “Move away from your station,” he told him.
Agent 13 moved and reveled her own gun and pointed it to Rumlow. “Like he said,” then everyone started to draw their weapons. I took mine out and pointed it at Rumlow. “Captain’s order.”
This was the first time I had pulled out my gun to anyone, so it was shaking a little. I knew I had guns pointed at me, but there was one that caught my eye. I turned slightly to my left and saw Caitlin pointing her gun at me. My whole world shattered at the sight of her. Her eyes were no longer friendly.
“You picked the wrong side, Agent,” Rumlow said to Agent 13.
“Cait?” I whispered to her in confusion.
“Don’t make me pull the trigger,” she whispered back.
Anger bubbled in me. My best friend worked for HYDRA. All of this time she was bad. And I shared everything with her. I let her meet my family. I met her own family. Did they know? Were they a part of it? Was our friendship a lie?
“Depends on where you’re standing,” Agent 13 said to Rumlow who had pushed the end of his gun to Ben’s head. I couldn’t look away from Caitlin though. She was a sweet person. Who held doors open for other people. Who never spoke a bad word about anyone—even when I wanted to talk shit. Ten years. Had she been HYDRA all this time?
“How long?” the question barely escaped my throat.
“Since we met,” she answered coldly. “You were my mission. Get close. Gather info.”
The more she spoke the more my heart and soul broke.
“Why?” I croaked.
“I was supposed to…recruit you without you knowing,” she shrugged. In a way she succeeded since I did the dirty deed for them. I helped built Project Insight.
I wish I could have asked more, but Rumlow had dropped his weapon and then used his knife to attack Agent 13. Then all hell broke loose. Everyone started to shoot at the STRIKE team. Caitlin shot towards me, but not at me. She hit an Agent coming to my rescue. I ducked to avoid the other shots and started to run away. But it didn’t take her long to catch up with me. She caught me by my hair. I used what I learned and got out of it and in the process landed a punch. My hand hurt like hell, but at least I got away.
The corridors were completely chaos. Agents shooting other agents. A lot of familiar faces trying to shoot me down.
I needed to help, but I didn’t know how. I wasn’t that good at hand-to-hand combat. I was good with computers. I needed to slow down the bad guys. Captain America got that message out at communications, so I knew that would be the place to go. I dodged a lot of people on my way. I decided to use the stairs to get to that level and I heard someone behind me when I was a floor away. Caitlin had caught up to me. My feet pushed me faster, but again I wasn’t fast enough. She caught up to me and just as I was about to open the door, she slammed my head against it.
Everything started to spin and it wasn’t long before the pain kicked up. I noticed my gun had fallen, but she kicked it away from me and it stopped close to the door.
“Can’t let you help them,” she spoke, but her voice sounded far away. God, pain sucked.
“How could you…be doing this?” I said through my teeth. I needed to buy time. “HYDRA is evil!” I was finally regaining some of my senses.
“HYDRA is going to bring order!” she protested back. “You’ve seen the world we live in! Aliens are real. Gods are real and we are not united. Earth should be united to keep ourselves protected. HYDRA will bring us together. You could do some good with us. You are really, really good.”
“You know why I joined,” I glared at her. “You know how I feel about HYDRA. They only wish to have all the power. Power can’t belong to just one group.”
“Don’t dwell on thoughts like that. If I can’t recruit you, then you are the enemy and I will stop you,” she raised her gun to me again.
“Cait, we’ve known each other for years. You’ve met my family,” I only felt the tears after they fell. But I couldn’t wipe them. I needed to talk to her. “Please, you can’t do this.”
Her hand tightened around the gun. Her finger on the trigger. Her eyes held so much warmth once. I had considered her the sister I never had. A part of me knew she was too far gone. But a bigger part of me hoped I could change her mind.
“Your family went through the holocaust, Caitlin, and they only survived because of Captain America. You’re standing here…pointing a gun at me because he sacrificed himself to give us a world without HYDRA.”
“Cut the head and two more will take its place,” she said and it brought chills down my spine. “If you won’t come willingly, I’ll make you.” She tried to punch me, but I was able to dodge it. It seemed the training stuck to me more than I thought. Or maybe it was the adrenaline helping me fight back. I dodged and dodged and blocked. She was a natural whilst I struggled with every move.
Caitlin moved swiftly, but I could tell she was holding back. Maybe a part of her cared for me. I needed to reach that part. She could have killed me already, yet, here we were fighting. I definitely wasn’t a fighter, but I was so happy we had taken those lessons or else I wouldn’t have been able to keep up.
At one point, I was able to kick her gun away and it fell down the stairs. My own gun that was on the ground was the only one left. It was close to the door and between us. We both jumped for it. I held it in my hands as she tried to pull it away. I felt my finger on the trigger and then I squeezed it accidently.
The shot echoed in the stairwell. Caitlin stopped struggling. Her eyes widened a bit and so did mine.
“No, no, no,” I started as she fell to the floor with a gunshot to her stomach. Blood started to come out quickly. I didn’t want to pull it, but during the struggle it happened. Blood started coming out of her mouth. “Cait! Cait!” I screamed and threw the gun to the side and used my hands to cover her wound. I wasn’t sure why I did it. I knew she was going to die. “I’m so sorry,” I sobbed. My hands began to get covered in her blood.
She was struggling to breathe and it was because of me.
The door opened and I looked up to Maria Hill. Her eyes quickly assessed the situation.
Caitlin coughed so I looked down to her again. “Hail…HYDRA,” were Caitlin’s last words as I saw the life leave her eyes.
“Oh God,” I sobbed.
Maria took out her gun and pointed at me.
“Hands above your head. You one of them?” she pointed to Caitlin.
I shook my head as I looked down at my dead best friend. Just less than an hour ago we were planning her wedding. Two hours ago, we were having brunch. We had finally decided on the color to the bridesmaids dress: Tiffany Blue.
“You’re the agent who helped create Insight’s security system,” Agent Hill remembered me.
“On Nick Fury’s order,” I croaked. “I didn’t know I was doing it for HYDRA.”
“None of us knew,” she sighed. “You knew her?”
“She…I…” I thought about her question. Did I know Caitlin? I thought I did. Clearly that wasn’t the case. “I thought I did.” I hoped she knew what I meant.
“Come…we could use your help.”
I looked up to Maria Hill and stood up. My hands still covered in Caitlin’s blood. I wiped it off on my pants and followed her. Not sure what I could do, but I knew that I needed to help stop this. This was the price Steve Rogers was talking about. Freedom didn’t come without consequence. I had made my decision and so had Caitlin. Somehow I had to live with the fact that I didn’t know her, not even a little bit and that I was the reason she was gone. But somehow I was going to go on.

Companions react to a cat imprinting on them and following them around
Cait: At first she is annoyed. She doesn’t want the thing to follow her around! Tries to scare it away but the cat still stick to her. In the end she decides to ignore it. But as weeks passes she grows accustomed to it and ends up taking a liking to it. A great liking. This is her cat and if anyone hurts it she will hurt them. She enjoys the company, even though she will deny it. Cait ends up naming it Charlie, regardless of gender, and gets proud every time it brings her a mouse or a bird. That’s right, who’s her little killer? You are, you are!
Curie: Oh, she’s so happy when she realizes the cat likes her! It’s so cute after all! If it’s a male cat she names it Alan and if it’s a female it’s Fabiola. Curie makes it a large bed made out of various fabrics and makes sure the cat is as healthy as possible. She really loves the cat and pets it all the time. Would snuggle it 24/7 if she could. Brushes it every day and baths it once every week. This is the healthiest and cleanest cat in all of the Commonwealth.
Codsworth: This poor little bot is so confused, help him. He doesn’t understand why it follows him all the time, he is made out of metal after all! Nevertheless, he lets it stick around and does his best to make it comfortable. Codsworth is a bit distressed since he can’t pet it without accidentally hurting it and feels terrible for not returning its affections. The most he can do is let it rub against him and sit on his ”head”. Poor, poor bot has never wished he had hands more in his entire life. Names the cat Marvel, since it’s a marvel it chose just him.
Danse: Doesn't even notice at first that the cat is following him. When he does eventually notice he just assumes it wants food and that it will go away once it realizes it won't get any. But when the cat still follows him, into battle nonetheless, he is confused, more so than Codsworth. Why does it follow him? What should he do with it? This man is clueless. Eventually he decides to keep it. It reminds him of proctor Quinlans cat, Emmet. Probably names it after some high ranking and important Brotherhood member, that dork. Totally babies the cat and talks to it as if it is a two year old child. His two year old child to be precise. It’s both adorable and terrifying how this hunk of a man can turn into such a blubbering mess in a few seconds with this cat.
Deacon: Instantly turns the cat into the mascot of Railroad. Likes to dress the cat up with different bandanas, glasses and hats. Names it something like Oscar or Claire but demands everyone call it agent Fluffington. Oh yeah, totally makes it an honorary agent and makes it write reports (it’s just paw prints on a paper to be honest). Everytime the cat meows he responds. “Meow”. “Gasp! No way! Tell me more!”. “Meow”. “She did? That’s amazing!”. He somehow finds some cat toys for it. Also; cat puns, tons and tons of cat puns. Please stop him, Glory is about to kill him.
Dogmeat: This doggo loves its new friend! He will protect it with his life!
Hancock: Ok, this cat is the most well protected thing in Goodneighbor, seriously. Everyone knows not to mess with it since Hancock will literary cut anyone who does. He loves it so much that it’s almost scary. No, scrap that, it’s totally scary. The cat has its own personal seat in the Third Rail and in his office. When Hancock has a speech it sits on the railing on the balcony while he talks. Totally does the Bond villain thing where he turns his chair around while petting his cat when negotiating with someone in order to intimidate them. It’s surprisingly effective. There’s also this unspoken thing that if the cat does not like or trust someone, neither does Hancock. Names the cat Cookie, just because he can.
Maccready: First things first, Maccready is more of a dog person. There were many dogs in Little Lamplight and he loved them all. But just because he prefer dogs does not mean he dislike cats. It’s actually the opposite. He appreciates their independent nature and aloof personalities. So when the cat starts following him around he’s all for it. Carries it on his shoulder when walking or in his backpack. Accidentally gives it a dog name since he knows shit about what to name a cat. Probably names it so something like Buster or Buddy.
Nick: The cat is his new best friend and sidekick, he is Sherlock and it is his Watson. Totally names it something like Noir or Bobby. Nicks favorite thing to do is sit in his office and pet the cat after a long stressful day. It always helps him unwind and sort his thoughts. When traumatized clients come in seeking help he always lends them the cat in order to calm down. It always works and the cat is loved by all. Wherever it goes people gives it treats or pets it. Everyone in Diamond City refer to it as Nick Jr..
Piper: Probably found it as an injured kitten, nursed it back to health and after that it stuck with her. The cat is incredibly fond of both Piper and Nat and they love it unconditionally in return. It’s part of the family. Is named Scooter or Marble. Piper swears she doesn't spoil it but she totally does and everyone knows it. It sleeps in her bed and eats what she eats. Plus all the treats. Oh god, the treats. If the cat did not move around so much it would undoubtedly get fat. It’s extremely embarrassing to watch when Piper talks with her cat since she used the most extreme baby talk in the history of mankind. It sound like incoherent babbling and only Nat knows what Piper is saying. If Piper had a functional camera she would totally be one of those people that have hundreds of pictures of her cat.
Preston: If there’s someone that deserves a pet it’s this guy. With everything he’s been through he sometimes get depressed and when that happens he needs someone to keep him grounded and calm. This someone is his cat. Whenever he starts to panic it always snuggles up to him and starts to purr. This never fails to calm Preston down and he’s so grateful for it. When the cat first started to follow him around he hesitated to take it in, afraid that he would not be able to take care of it. He never realized it would take care of him instead. Loves his cat immensely and treats it with respect. Preston names it Sunny.
Strong: When he first meet the cat he tries to eat it. Several times. But the cat still follows him. Either it’s incredibly brave or really stupid. Maybe both. Strong thinks it’s weak and pathetic. But then he sees humans with their pets and wonder if it has anything to do with the milk of human kindness. So the next time the cat approached him Strong started to pet it. This was the start of a wonderful friendship. The cat is always sitting on Strongs shoulder, wherever he goes, and Strong constantly talks to the cat. He simply calls the cat Kitty and he’s incredibly fond of it. Anyone who even looks at it the wrong way is killed. Strong totally feeds it the flesh of his slain enemies. He is very gentle with the cat and loves how fluffy it is.
X6-88: Ok, this one is long so bear with me . Let’s say that the Institute made synth cats and let them roam around in the base. Everyone loves them and they love everyone. Except for the coursers. Whenever a courser approaches they start to hiss and claw at them. Nobody knows why. But then there’s one cat that’s different and decides to imprint upon a courser. And that courser is our dear X6.
He doesn’t know why it follows him but he decides to ignore it. This only serves to make the cat more determined. Whenever X6 sits down it jumps up on his lap and when he’s got paperwork to do it lays down on it. But X6 is stubborn and won't give in to it’s adorableness. At least that’s what he tells himself. But he just can’t help to scratch behind its ears when it rubs against him or pat its head when bored. It’s not his fault, seriously.
But really, X6 and the cat is inseparable. Everybody knows that wherever X6 are the cat is close behind. And eventually X6 grows so accustomed to its presence that he grows worried when it’s not nearby. What if something happened to i? Of course he never voices these concerns but he visibly relaxes when it returns. The Institute have already officially “named” the cat so X6 sees no use in doing to himself.

Sole Survivor Christmas Headcanons
I was inspired (as usual, LOL) by the awesome @scorpio-skies! Thanks guys, & sorry it took a while for me to get this done! (It's been crazy for me - between the holidays, things being tight at work, and being a new mom. I pretty much have no time to work on 'Shadow of Steel' right now, or any one-shots that I want to do from that universe.  :-(  )
1. What was your sole's attitude towards Christmas before and after the apocalypse? Are they religious? Nora. LOVES. Christmas. ...At least she did, before the bombs dropped. She was always like an excited little kid at Christmastime, decorating her home with Nate (when he could be there), wrapping presents, spending time with her family, and all kinds of Christmas-y activities.
Her 1st Christmas in the Commonwealth was spent with Recon Squad Gladius in the Cambridge Police Station, and - needless to say - they didn't quite celebrate the holiday as much as she used to. It was... quite sad for her (I totally want to write a past/present Christmas fanfic set in the 'Shadow of Steel' universe... that'd be awesome, lol).
Once the Prydwen arrived in the Commonwealth, Nora's Christmases did get a bit cheerier - having grown closer to Danse, made some new friends (some a bit goofier than others), and... ahem... grown closer to someone else in her life, as well.  *XD
Nora is more 'spiritual' than religious. She has good morals and values, and believes that there are things in the universe that can't/might not be able to be explained with science alone. While she's not sure what greater powers are out there in the world, she wants to believe that her husband and other loved ones are in a better place.
2. What were their childhood memories about the Christmas holidays? What did they get for presents from their family/friends? Nora was very close with her family. Some of her favorite memories growing up include going sledding, ice skating, making Christmas cookies, and wrapping presents. Her siblings (an older brother & sister, Nora was the youngest) always used to tease her about being a perfectionist with the wrapping paper, but Nora simply pointed out that they didn't seem to mind whenever she gave them their presents.  (  XD )
Her brother's favorite childhood present was a baseball signed by one of the Boston Red Sox, given to him by Nora (who'd saved up her allowance quite a bit!). Her sister's favorite present was a Jangles the Moon Monkey plush, also given to her by Nora (Nora always hated it though, saying the monkey's face kind of freaked her out. ...This, of course, let to much teasing of Nora by her sister, by leaving Jangles in miscellaneous places around their home to surprise her. To this day, Nora is not a huge fan of coming across Jangles plushes in the Commonwealth). Nora's favorite present was a Giddyup Buttercup given to her from 'Santa'.
3. What was Christmas like with their spouse/ partner and other members of their family? Presents they would give each other? Nora's favorite Christmastime memories involve spending time with her loved ones. Nate wasn't there for every Christmas (being in the army and all), but her family members made sure that she was never alone (another reason why her 1st Christmas in the Commonwealth hit her so hard). When Nate couldn't be there, she'd spend Christmas Eve & Day with her sister, brother-in-law, and niece (her brother would visit on Christmas Day). Her parents had died a few years prior (right after she got her law degree), so spending time with her small but loving family meant everything to her.
Her favorite Christmas (so far) was the one before the bombs dropped. She was at her sister's house because Nate was on duty and had told her he wouldn't be home in time for Christmas.
They were all about to sit down for some Christmas Eve dinner when there was a knock at the door. Nora's niece answered it and was delighted to be greeted by 'Santa', who actually turned out to be Nate! (Nora's niece later forgave the 'deception', since she was really excited to see her uncle). Naturally Nora was delighted to see him - so much so, in fact, that she decided to give him his Christmas present early - a framed sonogram of the baby she'd somewhat recently discovered they were having (guess who?).
.....It was a pretty good Christmas for everyone all around that year.
4. What would sole give the companions/friends for Christmas? (I'm also including some characters not featured/mentioned in my fic as of this post, lol)
Dogmeat: a new bandana, some dog toys she found in an abandoned house, and plenty of dried radstag (she loves to spoil one of her best buddies!). Also, she spruced up the doghouse for him at Home Plate (her home in Diamond City).
Danse: Fancy Lad snack cakes, & mods for his laser rifle & power armor
Alexis: a holotape game for her Pip-Boy (along with a challenge to beat Nora's high score!)
Brooks: a few cold bottles of beer, some homemade treats, and a Vault Boy bobblehead
Maxson: a copy of 'The Once and Future King' that she found at the Boston Public Library (and a kiss under the mistletoe when no one's watching!) 😘
Preston: a modified laser musket and some grilled radstag (homemade, since he loves Nora's cooking!)
Piper: a package of bubblegum, gumdrops, Nuka-Cola, Sugar Bombs, & sweet rolls
Cait: a Rockville Slugger baseball bat
Nick: a carton of cigarettes and a book of classic literature stories & poems (including 'The Raven', 'Ozymandias', & 'Hamlet')
Curie: some medical books (in pretty good condition, considering) that she found at the Boston Public Library (and Fancy Lad snack cakes!)
Codsworth: a robot repair kit - with the promise that she would help polish him up when she could - and a bowler hat
MacCready: some comic books and a new scope for his sniper rifle
Deacon: a nice new(ish) pair of sunglasses and a Stealth Boy
Hancock: Addictol (a tongue-in-cheek present, which he found hysterical) and a serrated switchblade she modified for him.
Strong: a super sledge (after which Nora made him promise to only use it on enemies - never settlers, Minutemen, or BoS)
5. What other sole do you know they would like to kiss under the mistletoe? Hmm... not sure about other Soles, but besides the obvious (a certain Elder she has her eye on, lol), she might be willing to give Danse or Brooks at least a kiss on the cheek, since they're two of her best friends. Maybe Paladin Brandis as well, since they like to tease each other.
I think most people have already done this, but if you haven’t, take this as your invite and tag me in it! I love hearing about other people’s OCs and this is a fun one!

Out in the woods, an Ice Make Wizard was pounding away at a tree with reckless abandon. If the enemy wound up finding him out here, well… At least he’d finally have something to really vent his frustrations out on. He wasn’t using any Magic, and his knuckles were beginning to bleed, but Gray Fullbuster still didn’t care. He was so pissed. He was so sick of crying, yet all he could do to take his mind off the tears and stinging in his eyes… was react in the way Natsu would. By beating the tar out of anything he could get his hands on. And since every available hand was needed for fighting the Alvarez Empire… he had to go with beating up harmless trees and rocks.
Not that it made him feel any better.
“That idiot…” The Ice Wizard seethed as his punches slowed down, and he dug his nails into his skin even deeper, drawing more blood. He threw another punch and panted as he held it against the obliterated tree trunk. “Were you even thinking? No. I bet you weren’t. Even if Zeref spelled it out for you, I bet you killed him with every intention of keeping your promise. There’s no way you died without knowing Zeref had done something to you… Stupid… stupid, stupid, stupid Flamebrain!”
Gray howled with every ounce of oxygen in his lungs. He howled in anger for the loss of an indispensable rival and friend. He howled in rage at the unfairness of the world that another loved one was taken from him too soon. Perhaps most of all… intentionally or not, he howled in fury at the scarlet knight, who kept him from going after the Pyro.
If only he hadn’t listened for once. Erza said to leave it to Natsu, to have faith in Natsu, and now that idiot was dead. Sure, he kept his “promise”, but it wasn’t worth it. It was just like when Master Ur cast Iced Shell on Deliora. Only this time, he had no inkling this would happen, even though he could have stopped this. If only he’d been ballsy like Natsu had been, going off on his own like that. Zeref remaining alive would’ve been a small price to pay.
It was too late now. Natsu was gone, and there was no bringin’ him back. There was no use piling the blame on Erza’s shoulders, either; when they’d received the news, she had been the first to bolt off from the group. She was probably grieving just as hard, if not harder than he was. It made him and Wendy decide to deal with their grief on their own for now, while everyone else was filled in via Warren’s telepathy.
Shakily, Gray fell to his hands and knees. The tears around his eyes swelled as they dripped to the ground. They were going to keep fighting because they had to, for their own sake just as much as Natsu’s, but that wouldn’t erase the pain. That wouldn’t bring Natsu back. There was gonna be a huge void in their lives from now on. Moving on was gonna be rough…
Kami. He couldn’t even stomach the thought of Fairy Tail without that infuriating Matchstick. Not now… and maybe not ever.

“Wendy…” Carla whispered soothingly. The girl hadn’t stopped crying ever since Gray took off. She’d put on a brave face when Grandeeney died, but that had largely been due to the fact she had friends that were now her family. They filled the void that Grandeeney had left behind, and now one of them, a very precious someone, had died as well.
Carla understood Wendy’s pain better than anyone. Even though saving Cait Shelter from Nirvana had been a group effort, it had been largely due to Natsu’s strength that they’d succeeded. He took down the Master of the Oracion Seis. He looked out for Wendy like she really was his little sister. And most of all, after the ordeal with Tartaros and the Guild disbanded, Natsu had come looking for her to bring Fairy Tail back. It was really little wonder that he held such a special place in the Sky Maiden’s heart.
“He’s… He’s gone…” Wendy sobbed uncontrollably, seated under a tree with her knees drawn to her chest. “Natsu wasn’t supposed to die! Nothing could keep him down!”
            Carla could only nod quietly.
“I know, child… I know.” Closing her eyes solemnly, Carla did her best to find the words that would ease Wendy’s pain, even a little. It wasn’t easy for her, either. Though Natsu had been a ruffian that got on her nerves a lot, the Pyro had grown on her, as well. Finally, Carla reopened her eyes and spoke as gently as possible. “Wendy… I won’t tell you to dry your tears. But do you think Natsu would want you to sit here, while our friends need our help? The Alvarez Empire isn’t going to leave our shores, not after Natsu killed their Emperor. We have to keep fighting.”
“B-But…” Wendy trailed off quietly. She knew Carla had a point. If she didn’t lend her strength, more people were going to die. Possibly more people that were close to her. And Natsu… of course he would encourage her to stand up, even now. But that didn’t make it easy…
“Summon… your courage.” Carla told her in a heartfelt tone. “We can’t let Alvarez win. This isn’t even about revenge… it’s… Natsu might have been a fool to the end, throwing his life away like that, but we should try and appreciate that he did it for us. He believed that we could handle the rest. We can’t let him down!”
Again, Wendy knew she was right. Painfully so. For that reason, Wendy rubbed the back of her hand over her face, drying her tears as best as she could. She still felt so sad… But for Natsu, her hero, her friend, her brother… she would pick herself back up. Because in a lot of ways, Natsu had taught her what it “really” meant to be a Dragon Slayer.
And she wasn’t going to disappoint him.

Loke let out a tired sigh as he laid Lucy against the wall, farthest from the cell that was keeping some prisoner contained. He could pick up on her distress from the Spirit World, so imagine his surprise when he popped over, and Master explained what “happened”. Loke found it difficult to believe, but also knew Makarov wouldn’t lie about something like this. Natsu was… dead. He still couldn’t wrap his mind around those three simple words. It shouldn’t have been possible for them to be in the same sentence. Not so soon, not while Natsu was still young.
The Lion Spirit had done everything he could to comfort Lucy, but she still cried her heart out, still fell asleep from exhaustion. Cana hadn’t been much better, in her corner of the room; and frankly, Loke wasn’t better off than either of them. As a proud member of Fairy Tail, as someone who likened himself as an older brother of sorts to Natsu and Gray… this hurt. Like no other.
In the end, he found himself sitting next to the slumbering Lucy and dwelling on all the happy times he’d had with the mouthy Pyro. Not long after, a concerned Capricorn also materialized in the human world, hovering over the both of them.
“Is there anything I can do that may be of assistance?”
            Loke merely shook his head.
“This one’s just going to take time to heal… Even then, there’ll still be scars.” Loke eyed Lucy for a moment. “She’ll pull through. She always does. All we can do is be there for her.”
Capricorn looked down at him solemnly, the light of the room reflecting off of his shades.
            “And what of you?”
            Loke chuckled softly.
“I might be spending a lot of time over here for the foreseeable future. Now more than ever, Fairy Tail needs to stick together. I have just as many responsibilities being one of them as I do being leader of the Zodiac.”
Capricorn smiled at the Lion Spirit’s commitment. He really was an amazing leader and friend.
“And I shall endeavor to be by Lady Lucy’s side as well.” The Sea Goat echoed his leader’s sentiments.
No other words needed to be spoken.
            ~*~
For the first time since Tartaros, Erza found herself overwhelmed by grief. She knew that she had pretty much abandoned Gray and Wendy to their own sadness, but the Requip mage couldn’t help it. She’d reacted on impulse. How else could she react? There was only so much pain that she could take before she couldn’t hide it anymore, and this time… just this once, she needed to be alone. Even moreso than when Jellal had been arrested.
Because the man that had melted the barriers she’d erected around her heart… he was gone. At least Jellal had been alive, if not in a bad spot when he’d been arrested; she might have reacted violently to anyone approaching her during that time, but she would have come to accept their comfort. But now… now she was at a complete and utter loss.
Natsu wasn’t coming back. She had stood up for him when all others wanted to run after and support him, and he… This was like a slap in the face. Everything she’d learned from him… how you lived for your friends… It felt like Natsu had spat on that. As if he’d turned his back on “finding another solution.” If Natsu’s life force was tied to Zeref, the Black Wizard would have brought that up during their confrontation, if for nothing else than to dishearten the Dragon Slayer.
… But apparently, Natsu had been too strong in his convictions, too hung up on “keeping his promise.” As if she would have been disappointed if he’d retreated! If he’d just done that, he would have made it back alive… Or if she had gone after him, to back him up… Instead, just like so many times before, she had placed her trust in him. Even for something as miraculous as killing Zeref... she believed in him.
But the thing about that trust was that there was also a silent agreement that he would make it back alive. That had always been the deal. He even said it himself, during the Battle for Fairy Tail, demanding that of her. The enemy had been very powerful this time, but she had complete faith in him. Because he was Natsu Dragneel, and Natsu Dragneel pulled off miracles as if they were nothing.
There was no miracle this time. Not… Not a true miracle. Zeref was dead, but so was Natsu. Fate must have really hated her, to deal this blow. Natsu was one of two people that she never, ever wanted to lose; Gray was the other one, and he was likely venting right now. As much as she cared about Jellal, he just wasn’t in the same league as Natsu and Gray. Erza accepted that he had to pay his debts, to atone for his sins, and so she had been able to move on from the time of his arrest.
This loss was so much worse. As if she had lost a significant part of herself in Natsu’s death. She had relied on him so much. His warmth. His spirit. His compassion… Erza was just as angry as she was sad, but it was the very thought of a Fairy Tail without Natsu Dragneel that was keeping sadness as the dominant emotion at this time. The notion itself was unfathomable, as if Natsu and Fairy Tail were one and the same.
And so Erza wept. She wept for what must have been hours. Tears were even pooling from her right eye, but Erza had stopped noticing a while ago. She knew that she had to pull herself together, for the sake of the Guild, but she just couldn’t manage it as quickly as she normally would. This time was so very different. This wasn’t just a friend being hurt or in trouble… this was Natsu, and he was dead. Never coming back.
            “Erza…”
The scarlet knight stifled a gasp. That voice… belonged to Natsu. Whether it was real or just some delusion on her part… it didn’t matter. All she wanted was to hear his voice. She needed this, so she listened very intently.
“I hate to see you cry. That’s… this isn’t you! You’re as tough as a dragon, so start actin’ like one!”
“But Natsu…!” She looked skywards and objected woefully, only to get cut off again.
“I’m gonna tell you what Igneel told me to do… ‘Cause out of everyone, you need it most of all! GET ON YOUR FEET, ERZA!
Erza didn’t know why she complied… Natsu had turned his back on the “Fairy Tail way”, and yet she found herself wobbling as she rose to her feet, leaning on the tree behind her for support. Her gaze was still focused on the blue skies above.
“I probably shared more years with you than I did with Igneel… and y’know what? You two aren’t different at all! I was always watching your back, playing catch up as we trained hard, and you’re the strongest person I know! Even stronger than Gramps or Gildarts! ‘Cause even when you stumbled, you got right back up!”
“But this time’s different, Natsu…” Erza whispered with a frown. As expected, the Dragon Slayer denied it.
“NO! Nothing’s changed! Even now, I’m alive in your heart, aren’t I?! You’re listening to me right now!” The voice went on, even as Erza was overwhelmed with emotion once again. Though this time, there was definitely a layer of happiness in there. A happiness that blossomed in her chest. “I want you to keep on growing, you got that?! If you give up now, I’m never gonna forgive ya! Hell, I’ll count this as a victory over you! You want that?!”
Erza released a deep breath that she didn’t know she’d been holding. She was still angry over his selfish sacrifice… still immensely sad… But she supposed that she shouldn’t allow herself to fail now. Not when the “old” Natsu would have kicked her ass for faltering now.
The scarlet knight couldn’t fight the grin tugging at her lips. Real or not, that was exactly what she needed to hear. She would continue to get stronger, and she’d postpone his Punishment until she joined him on the other side. She’d get strong enough to make that loveable idiot regret throwing his life away… The first step to secure the future was to defeat Alvarez… and she was very easily “fired up” for that now~.
          ~*~
Note: I just couldn't keep Erza-chan sad... She deserved some comfort, so why not have Natsu pass on what Igneel told him~... ^___^
