This is really interesting too. Important to note that demisexuality is real, where the attraction develops after the emotional attachment, and that could encompass this idea that only one guy is attractive to him.

But it's not really about what JK does and doesn't find attractive. If he's attracted to various men, we have no idea, but as ever the real problem is the absolute shutting down of an idea. Discounting a whole "genre" of man just because they'd rather sit with their fantasy is problematic, reductive and wilfully ignorant of the breadth of queer attraction. I find it so funny when people try to dissuade people from shipping same sex pairing by using the "We need more representation of close and intimate male friendship. People need to stop making everything gay" excuse. But the reality is that the friendship who is truly under representated is male/female friendship. Ask anybody if 2 guys can be friend? Of course! Ask if 2 girls can be friend? Obviously! Now ask if a a guy and a girl can be friend? "Well, hum ... not really ... the guy probably want to fuck the girl if she is pretty ... the friendship isnt real." Clearly society lacks representation of healthy male/female friendship. Tv shows, anime etc ... give the MC a whole harem of girls (girls who are supposed to be just friends and he thinks of as only friends at the beginning) pining for him or love the trope of the good guy friend who is waiting for the girl to stop dating assholes and finally notice him. Which also lead to the gay best friend trope bc its the only guy who can be the girl's friend.

Representing male/female friendship not only help against heteronormativity but also misoginy. The idea that women arent fun to be around and are boring perpetuate the thought that women are just good at being fucked, at being wifed etc, and not fun enough to just have a good time doing friends stuff ... So men end up thinking they can only return romantic or lustful feelings toward women.

All that to say that those people clearly do not care about friendships representation. They are just annoyed that people prefer same sex pairings to the holy straight pairings. I liked how the character of Amy in Gone Girl talked about the Cool Girl trope. How men wanna see women they wanna hang out with in a certain way and outwardly, it seems this is a fun girl, with a free, liberal and casual devil may care attitude yet still have their personalities revolving around the desires and fetishes of men. I also liked how again, the character of Amy in a film called Chasing Amy portrayed a similar issue, even though the film has its own problems. How men see lesbian women and even though their sexual interests don't intersect, men nevertheless feel righteous about constructing sexual fetishes around it, objectifying lesbians because women, by the simple grace of being women, simply cannot do without men, that their whole existence is nullified if men aren't in it.

A male/female relationship which is platonic and based on equal terms can do so much to give some resolution to this issue.

As for the 'feminist' fans in this fandom, it is interesting to see how Sakura or Hinata stans think cheering their faves is a holy act of feminism while understanding nothing about feminism and female representation in media. It has created such a toxic environment in this fandom, and I am sure others. To a huge extent, I blame the industry because the target group of this genre is so impressionable, it's so easy to misinterpret things, especially with how these women are written. While I get why Kishi did it with these two female characters, given they would be paired up with his two main (and clearly gay, living in a homophobic world) characters for the sake of the sequel and that he writes other female characters much better than theirs, it still is very problematic. Because they were never condemned in the actual story. They were never called out. Never made to face consequences for their actions. And this, THIS, makes their fans so insistent about the apparent goodness of them, while sweeping the rest under the carpet. While it doesn't take a genius to spot their faults, it certainly takes a certain level of understanding of narrative, visual language, themes and understanding of the world.

I can talk about narrative subversion till my lungs give out but unless one shows an inclination to learn how narratives are built, they would keep sticking to their token understanding of concepts such as representation and feminism. Which is such a sad phenomenon. It is almost hurtful how so many fans are so willingly tone deaf and blind, all because of some shallow relationship they wish they had. It's amazing to me how well fortified their delusions are. How strong their willingness to be courted by a hot popular boy. How fine they are with having their fave character revolve around some guy for the most superficial of reasons. This is what their understanding of feminism amounts to. All this nonsense for some cheap self insert.

Even Sasuke stans who are anti SNS. They prefer thinking of Sasuke as some cool, badass, revolutionary man archetype who sleeps around and struts with his massive dick out. You know sometimes I feel shipping is a strong word for what I feel for the story. Because Naruto is just a love story about two boys. If I want them to be together, is it shipping? Shipping is such a fandom term. If that's what the story has led me to, to hope for the two main characters to have a resolution that the entire narrative has painstakingly led me to, is it really shipping? I am just an ordinary reader/audience who wants a good ending to this story. The way the creator wrote it. All I did was to follow what he wanted me to see. Is it then shipping or just a natural conclusion to the story? To want them to be with each other?

As for those fans who say 'we need more representation of men being friends, stop making everything gay' are so fucking silly. Like damn, don't we have enough representation of platonic male bonding? There are entire tropes based on that dynamic. Cop buddies, bro code, band of brothers, big brother mentor, bromantic foil, bros before hoes, brother from another mother and this goes on and on and on. I can count like forty films and twenty books off the top of my head that use these male bonding tropes. Just say you are a homophobic piece of shit. Why circumvent facts? My really random fruity four beach headcanons

Swimsuits

1. Nancy- wears a one piece that’s really high cut (sort of like Karen’s in s3) and definitely has one of the flowy dresses that you were over it but takes it off as soon as they get there.

2. Robin- definitely a bikini but with a really baggy t-shirt over the top that she won’t take off unless she has to swim (usually because she’s racing against someone in the water and she doesn’t want it to “drag her down”). Nancy thinks it’s adorable and also dies a little on the inside whenever she takes the shirt off to swim.

3. Eddie- really baggy black shorts with the skulls on them and a tank top probably (some kind of shirt so that you can see his tattoos but not his scars). Steve teases him about the shorts a lot.

4. Steve- really tight swim shorts and absolutely nothing else. Eddie makes them both leave early to go… do things.

Swimming ability

1. Steve- obviously he’s really good at it and he loves to swim. But I feel like his worst stroke is breaststroke (only bc one of my friends can do BUTTERFLY like a pro but cannot do breaststroke, the EASIEST one and it confuses me constantly). Both Robin and Eddie make some gay joke about it until he gets sick of it and starts listing off all the women he’s ever gotten with until they’re both jealous.

2. Eddie- absolutely no swimming ability. I can’t remember how well anyone swam in the one episode in volume 1 but to me he cannot swim. Like he can but it’s SOOO BAD. He mostly prefers to just splash people and try to drown them. Definitely does the thing where you shake your hair out like a dog when it’s wet. Steve thinks it’s endearing. Nancy and Robin do not.

3. Robin- meh. She can kind of swim, but does like three strokes at once. Definitely does the thing where you try and see how far you can swim without coming up for air. Probably challenges Eddie to try and beat her. Her and Eddie also team up to splash people. However after the first time she splashed Nancy and then got the silent treatment for a whole week, she makes sure that her gf is protected at all times. Eddie has absolutely no such qualms about Steve.

4. Nancy- does not swim. She definitely can, fairly well, and on rare occasions will actually participate. But 90% of the time she will either be lying in the sun with some kind of tropical drink (“Nancy you look like the cover of a holiday magazine right now wtf you’re so prettyyyy”) or will be in the water but will not put her head underwater. She hates the feel of it but also she doesn’t want to ruin her makeup and hair. If anyone splashes her she will go home. She has done it before. Gets Robin to guard her so that no one splashes her and Robin does so very dramatically.

Random

1. Nancy hates the sand. She never uses her own car to go to the beach bc sand gets everywhere. She probably has one of the pool chairs that fold out that you get at fancy hotels bc even when you’re on a towel Robin sand still gets everywhere.

2. Eddie collects shells and sea glass and whatnot. Sometimes he’ll give some to Robin but mostly he keeps it. Steve thinks it’s the cutest thing ever.

3. Steve is the type of guy to reapply sunscreen at exactly the right amount of time, put it on the right amount of minutes before you actually go in the water, etc. He does like to tan but he’s also very aware of sun damage and years as captain of the swim team has drilled sun safety into him.

4. Robin forces Nancy to apply sun screen. Nancy wants to tan but Robin is very scared of sun damage and rambles on about it until Nancy lets her put it on (you know the thing in movies when the love interest gets the main character to get their back and they get all flustered? That).

5. Steve will occasionally rest but spends 99% of his time in the water (showing off for Eddie). He’s always loved swimming and it makes him feel “free” or something. Eddie thinks it’s stupid and splashes him with water a lot.

6. They very rarely bring the kids because when they do, they have to do everyone’s sunscreen (“how come Nancy doesn’t have to put any on?” “Wait Nancy wdym I told you to put some on” “wow thanks Mike”) and make sure they don’t drown (because both Dustin and Mike are the worst swimmers of all time, even though the rest of them are pretty good). It’s very tiring and after Max and El ran away to go and look at crabs meaning Steve had to spend an hour looking for them, they’ve learnt that trips to the beach are for adults only.

7. Jonathan and Argyle are often charged with looking after the kids while the fruity four goes to the beach (bc Steve gets nervous) and they are the worst babysitters ever. They let the kids do whatever they want as long as they don’t tell Steve and the kids love it.

8. One time Robin got stung by a jellyfish and Nancy immediately called an ambulance and was kinda freaking out but mostly staying calm until Robin was like “no don’t call an ambulance they’re so expensive” and Nancy (and Steve, except he was busy trying to do all the health stuff like elevate the foot bla bla bla) was immediately filled with rage at the stupidity of the American healthcare system and swore that she would cover all the expenses for it. Eddie was probably the one trying to calm Robin down but was basically doing whet Robin does when someone gets hurt which is ramble on about something and lowkey make it worse.

Wyll: I feel like he'd get on super well with Wyll, (local goodest boys meeting.) I feel like he'd want to choke Mizora the moment she shows up lol I feel like he'd definitely enjoy the whole hero persona of the sword coast thing, then when he finds out that Wyll got cast out by his father from Baldurs Gate he'd also want to fistfight Ulder lol

Astarion: Dari would not enjoy the vampire man. At first anyhow, though it's not the first time he made friends with someone who tried to murder him at their first meeting (looking at you ZEV).. but they wouldn't become incredibly close either, more just casual friends that check on each other once a year

Karlach: HIMBO BUDDIES. karlach's a himbo to me, da'revas is a certified himbo. NEED i go on. they'd be besties, he'd kill anyone who look at Karlach wrong

Shadowheart: Well. he has a thing for goths. No but they would get along, he is used to the secretive or more held back nature, he definitely enjoys having her around. Not too fond of the whole shar dogma she spews in the beginning but the second she opens up he goes full protective mode (“I will NEVER let ANYONE hurt you EVER AGAIN. I’ll kill all wolves personally” “Sweet of you but your hug is choking me, Da’revas-“)

Lae'zel: he also has a thing for women who are mean to him. He'd be interested in her culture definitely, and I just know he would love the way she speaks. definitely would be friends with her

Gale: Eh. Probably neutral on him, no strong opinions one way or the other, he'd definitely be more sympathetic towards him near the end and will have a third goddess to fistfight

my opinion, like many in the fandom, is that Buck has always been a little bi coded, and I think handling it like the way abc handled Rosa Diaz being bi, by simply having Buck drop some information he’s always known about himself but never been comfortable sharing, would be a decent way of handling it. for one thing, having both buck and eddie go through a gay panic thing would be a lot for one season, and maybe a bit repetitive, and I think it would be perfectly in character, while adding a really lovely layer to Maddie & Buck’s relationship, that Maddie has always known Buck was bisexual, and has attempted (maybe awkwardly) over the years to get Buck to be more comfortable with it. I also think it would add a really wonderful layer to Buck and Chim’s relationship (again, to make the b99 comparison bc this is a textbook “if i had a nickel for every time a beloved, diverse show involving police officers got canceled by fox and picked up by ABC bc beloved diverse shows with a really active fan base are their bread and butter i’d have two nickels” situation lol), the same way it was a natural & moving way to have the first person Rosa came out to be Charles, if Chim finds out because Buck needs to talk to Maddie about how he and Eddie had a stress induced make out on Eddie’s couch and then Eddie had a panic attack over being gay, and Chim is there trying to connect the dots of this conversation & be supportive bc Buck is anxiously mumbling while bear hugging Jee in his kitchen. And “Buck has been bisexual the entire time” leaking out to the rest of the 118 has a lot of potential; we know they’re all gossipy & nosy about each other, and Chim is terrible at keeping important secrets, so Hen & Bobby piecing it together from Buck‘s sudden interest in LA Gay Culture & Chim’s nervous stuttering, while Ravi is like “happy that you’re comfortable enough to come out to me Buck but again, i do not need to know this much detail about your personal life” all of this just seems like a very natural, easy way of getting Buck to come out.

and that leaves the Gay Panic storyline to Eddie, lmao. because whether they decide to go with the common fandom idea of “eddie is gay but due to being a really macho dude from Texas, born into a family of very typically ‘we will always love you no matter if you’re straight or choose to be gay’ esque family, has been heavy repressing it all these years” or they decide to make him bisexual, it’s clear that Eddie’s continued wild misses at dating women, panic attacks over the idea of being with a woman, and naming another man as the caretaker of his child in case he dies, that Eddie is primed to have an absolute break down if he ever comes out. Is it very similar to Carlos’ story? Yeah, obviously, but they’re incredibly different people, and more than that, the type of family they come from is incredibly common in this day and age, and whereas we’ve seen the fallout of all the shame that comes with feeling like your parents love isn’t unconditional wrt Carlos, we never saw the initial, badly handled coming out that prompted this break in the Reyes family, and we would be seeing that with Eddie and the Diaz family! not only that, but we have Hen & Toni there to help Eddie (and his parents & pepa & abuelita) through it, to help them handle what are bound to be difficult conversations on Eddie’s history of dating women his family will like that he has minimal interest in, and what happens now that Eddie is once again testing the unconditional aspect of his family’s love.

And that’s not even touching The Bobby And Athena Of It All, from Bobby once again relating to Eddie’s struggles of “what do you do when you feel like the core of who you are has shifted and everyone else is standing still” to Athena having intimate knowledge of the effect of coming out late in life, after you’ve lived a whole life as an ostensibly heterosexual man. We could get a really touching scene between Bobby & Athena and Buck, discussing how this is something he’s always known but it’s just been easier to let it go unsaid even if he knew Bobby and the rest of the 118 would be loving and supportive if he ever came out. Imagine the jokes re: Buck, Eddie, AND Hen being the messiest gays in LA while Ravi is begging them to Say Less.

I think the storyline potential of “Buck and Eddie impulsively make out after a stressful call in ep 1 and then skirt around their feelings for at least half a season” can be really rich, and also kind of in line for how abc has handled a character who got popular for being bi coded, and I’m not saying i trust them to not be cowards about it, but I am saying they shouldn’t be cowards about it.

tosh my babygirl my princess light of my life angel darling… shes so good. shes so good 🥺 i love her dearly. she’s so damn underutilized i hate how the show regulates her to a supporting role + only uses her for romantic plots. WACK shes so much more than that. i want a plotline about her cyberterrorism like hello??? i want a plotline about her warped little mind.. i want a plotline about her finally learning spanish ;-; that show did not do her justice and it did not deserve her. i often say torchwood’s characters are too good for the show; tosh is probs the best example of that. no other character gets screwed over as badly as she does by the narrative (not even ianto!) she’s so tragic and lonely i just wanna give her the biggest hug ever. 

fav moment… every time she smiles. (or smirks. hrgh. tosh call me.) also every time she geeks out about smth. im tryna think of a specific moment but idk if i have one?? i just love her overall i smile every time she’s on screen she’s my girlie. when i rewatch i might rmr one though

least favorite moment, the absolute only thing i can think of (hell, my only complaint with her as a character other than i wish she’d get over owen cuz bad taste queen pls u deserve sm better) - it’s always bothered me how she goes over to owen’s flat in aditd and just starts babbling about her own problems. she even says something like “you think everything’s about you”, and in that ep it’s like ??? why are they all acting like he’s unjustified being miserable and angry when he's fucking dead?? like they're all so unsympathetic and mean, even tosh, and out of her it's especially weird?? tbh it just strikes me as ooc (+ kind of misogynistic highkey) writing. i mean, by all means, let tosh bitch, she deserves to blow off some steam + esp deserves to be rude to owen tbh fhsdkjfsd, but the way it’s done in that particular moment feels ooc and, like, how men write women as talking too much and never listening lmao u kno what i mean (owen’s tuned out in the actual episode but you can see her full ramble in the original script, on page 23). tosh has never troubled anyone with her issues before, why would she choose now to, and when she knows owen’s struggling? yeah, on second thought, i don’t hold that against her actually, that’s ooc to me fhdkf. thts just the writer being a wiener.

my only unpopular opinions (slash hot takes) are that 1) towen fucking SUCKS get her away from him, and 2) most people like tosh but she’s highkey underappreciated, esp in fanfic, because of fandom racism + misogyny. she’s not bashed like gwen is but she’s ignored completely which is nearly as bad, and a lot of it’s cuz she happens to be in a show with two white men in a gay relationship who are overwhelmingly prioritized 💀 i will never not be petty about the way that ship dwarfs everything else in comparison. also throwing towen into the background of janto is so gross n cheap. if ppl cared abt her they'd do smth more interesting. and it's never well-done either. ugh.

i have a few hcs that are gonna end up in my owento verse (gwen and tosh are prominent characters in it bc i love them, and their relationships w owen and ianto and each other also have value lawl). tbh a lot of em are just things i think they should introduce into their lives to be happier. i want them happy ;-;

she starts coding video games recreationally!! nothing fancy but she rlly enjoys it + also gets into the swing of making little storylines n getting to express herself that way which is good for her. owen playtests shit for her

her and gwen go on spa dates sometimes. they put it on the torchwood credit card

she gets into fish tanks and fish tank care!!! esp like aquarium plants. shrimp and moss balls, that sort of thing. maybe plecos or loaches. she loves it + it’s grounding, which is good for her bc shes otherwise always got her head in her computers yanno. she’ll sit by her tank while she codes her games and the water sounds are calming. 

she also sits by it while she studies her spanish books which she does finally do. she doesn’t get around to the piano, though; doesn’t prioritize buying a keyboard. maybe one day (this is a nobody dies au btw so she will in fact eventually get around to it ;-;)

oh she’s autistic have i said that. the fish tanks absolutely become a spin. she has a few we know of from canon - math and computers, obviously, but also history (gbg) and the uk’s rivers (from gooseberry; i think it was just the uk maybe it was europe’s rivers. or the world’s! i don’t remember). she also loves trivia like she knows a fair amount about quite a lot of things + loves accumulating random info

well this is smth from my owandy verse but i think it should happen anyway. so it kind of kicks off bc gwen mixes up a blind date (it was gonna be tosh & andy and then owen & a friend of hers, but shes an adhd icon n bungles the invites <3)... tosh ends up with gwen’s friend, who’s straight, but they hit it off and she invites tosh to have drinks or maybe come to a bookclub meet or something with some friends of hers?? point is, tosh makes some casual friends. maybe meets a pretty girl there or smth 👁️ but mainly i want tosh to have girl friends like i think she grew up very lonely i want her to have some normalcy

also sometimes i like tosh x andy maybe they have a little meet cute at a torchwood crime scene or smth fshdkfd. i think they’d be cute and he’d treat her well. she'd babble abt tech stuff and he wouldnt understand a damn word but he'd listen very intently

I have never been able to figure out if yugioh is supposed to be as gay as it comes across or if it's a weird accident because it goes way past the typical shonen friendship tropes, there are two men standing here staring lovingly into each other's eyes telling each other they're the only person who has ever understood them as people, then go on to have a story line that if just one of them was a woman it would be in the romance genre instantly

I started off just thinking about Yusei for this because of Kiryu and Bruno, because he has literal date episodes with Bruno that mirror the one he had with Aki, and the backstory with him and Kiryu is identical to every dramatic breakup scene I have ever seen in my life. Then I remembered Kaiba trying to invent a way to travel to a specific afterlife so he could "play duel monsters" with his "rival" one last time because he missed him. and whatever was going on with Yugi and Atem that was so gay it was how I discovered what gay people were as a child.

But uh. then I remembered Judai and Johan in GX. there is literally no heterosexual reading of them. The fact some writers tried to write episodes of Judai showing interest in women was pointless because then he'd turn around and gently hold Johan in his arms with rainbows in the background while Sho is off to the side having a trope-filled jealousy arc on the side straight out of every slice of life romance drama I've ever watched. then another episode insisting he likes girls again

also while looking up a pic of Judai and Johan for this I found an article about how the english dub of gx made Judai straight despite him being the first queer character in yugioh because they made Yubel, an intersex genderfluid character, a cis woman in the dub. and now I'm mad at that all over again bc as a teenager I didn't understand fully why it irritated me so much but now I very much do lol

so the thing about communities of expats/immigrants/foreigners is that there are ALWAYS people coming and going but for a while here I had a really tight group of friends I met through work and we did EVERYTHING together. We’ll call them J, N, and B. All around my age. J was a guy from Canada, N an American guy, and B a South African girl.

N, bless his soul, has always been the most OBVIOUSLY gay guy but has wayyyyy too much internalized homophobia to deal with it so compensated by being wayyyy too into women, you know? But also he had a collection of 300 perfumes and reviewed them on YouTube lol so

ANYway he was in one really weird relationship with some girl we never even got to meet for a while and then he met Z, who started hanging out with all of us. She was always so great and they were so cute together.

So eventually J (the coolest guy, we always watched hockey together) moved back to Canada and N and Z left to go work for the summer on a ranch in the US. The tentative plan was for N to stay there because he’d always been very vocal about hating Taiwan but Z was gonna kind of play it by ear. I figured they were gonna get married, they’d already been together a couple years and had a very strong relationship

Anyway idk what happened but the minute N stepped back on American soil, his inner asshole started to show. He just became this horrible annoying person I didn’t really want anything to do with, so I haven’t talked to him much since.

I kept in touch with Z who was having a terrible time with him. He all of a sudden broke up with her in a REALLY shitty way and she moved back here. Then he moved to like Bolivia or something idk.

So then Z, B, and I were still here. B is always busy or super depressed (no judgment) so I hardly ever see her, so Z and I started hanging out alone.

It was a LITTLE awkward at first bc I only ever hung out with her through N?? But actually we got along so great and hang out as much as we can now

That’s cool, that’s fine, but I started feeling this attraction to her and this chemistry between us that suggested it… could? be mutual?? Like there were definitely signals, especially the time we went through the haunted house together wow

We had a couple discussions that were like “okay so I guess we’re both technically pretty pansexual” so it would hypothetically work ((I DO strongly id as gay but my attitude is anything’s possible u know?))

A while after that I invited her to an open mic I was performing at and sang girl crush about her asfjljdzhk

Then we had a discussion where she was basically like “I don’t date friends” which is super fair but also we still weren’t talking about us specifically

Anyway that was several months ago and my feelings have def toned down since then (also her work schedule sucks so we don’t see each other that often) and like. idk I’ve done this once before about having a crush on someone I got in super well with and then missing my chance (that person ended up dating our other friend and they’ve been together like 5 years now rip) but this also isn’t something I’m super active or serious about right now????

sanji is the most closeted character ever a lot of people hc him as bi which is great and awesome ofc but to me personally he reads so much like a gay man so deeply in the closet that he plays up his "straightness" and masculinity to the extreme. and im not just saying that bc of projection like it is there in the text... like the fact that he fawns over women all the time but literally as soon as a woman shows genuine interest back he is stone-faced does not care does not react. it really reads like a huge performance to demonstrate his masculinity and not actual interest in them and he doesn't know what to do when they like him bc he's not actually interested in them so he plays dumb. ESPECIALLY after growing up in not one but two households with really toxically masculine ideals, one of which he idolizes to this day. he also can seemingly just like. turn off his girl crazy behaviors like when the moment calls for it (WCI as one example) he doesn't do his whole ~ahh woman <3333 thing which further reiterates that fawning over them is not an involuntary lovestruck reaction but an active choice that he makes to play up how straight he is. and like he treats women nicely and fawns over them but never really... pursues them? there's also the fact that every single time a man compliments him or is impressed by him he immediately responds that he doesn't take compliments from men almost like he's so afraid of being perceived in a romantic light with men to the point where he's even nervous to take a simple compliment form them, something that does not bother straight men. being upset over getting a compliment from the same gender is only something that a closeted person afraid of any perceived queerness would do its not normal behavior. plus there's the fact that men get him so riled up that he cannot control his behavior (kinemon literally had him writhing around on the floor in anger lmao) and is constantly picking fights with men since in his mind that's the only way he can be closer to them or get their attention without being perceived as gay. there is soo much more, i could go on and on and on about his + sanji gender studies (okay i'll do a mini rant: he was so fucking happy wearing that dress on momoiro island and it's only when he got a newspaper about his crew that he decided he couldn't wear it anymore. almost like he found happiness as a woman in a place where he was guaranteed acceptance but then was reminded about how his crew would see him and how they would react and freaked out, again due to the toxic masculinity. also further evidence is that it took him literally ONE CONVERSATION to go from "no fucking way im not wearing a dress im not like you people" to "omfg i am a woman i have found myself." if he truly had nothing going on gender-wise it would have taken more convincing) but in conclusion sanji wants everyone to think he likes women so he plays up the simp behavior to the extreme but without any real attraction to them due to the toxic masculinity that's been entrenched in him since childhood and the need to be a "real man." i am sobbing crying throwing up over him give him some estrogen and let him date men. oh also this:

In my current Jay/silent Bob obsession I watched the 2000s Clerks Cartoon. And it sure is a cartoon with jokes. I see why it was cancelled , but if there were like five Seasons of this shit it would watch them all. It is still kinda bad, sure some of the Jokes made me laugh but the humour is very of it’s time (I think, can’t remember the early 2000s I was a young child but it’s just making jokes in the dispense of minorities often; like haha no women, Randal Turns every girl into a butch lesbian, token Black character that get’s cut off every time he’s on screen, funny disabled characters bc).

It's also out of character (what I know from the og clerks), Inside Jokes are there and alright. The last Episode definitely was the worst even though what I like About this shit show is that it doesn’t take itself serious at all and they do most of that in Episode 6. I’m more interested in the backstory of Leonardo Leonardo than Randal and Dante, I only watched this shit to see Jay and silent Bob and they mostly delivered. It’s just what the hole askewniverse (as far into it as I am) is to me: Never before was I so invested in something I despise this much at the same time!

Also is Kevin Smith an alley because he writes so much gay shit? And when did he learn the word bisexual?

I am back on my bullshit (thinking about your stranger thing fics 24/7 and getting confused that your canon is not universal) but i was wondering if you had any extra body swap AU tidbits to share!! Or some Robin and Jonathan interactions in any verse!!

Lastly, I would love to hear your thoughts about how the Duffers pick their outcasts!! Also one thing that’s always struck me about stranger things (especially s1) is how much the narrative beats strike along those of ecological disasters(a la Erin brokovitch) and how in some ways ST seemed to understand that tragedy is random but some people are less protected from tragedy/authority fails them/the knowledge something is wrong but having no recourse yet lost all sense of finesse in later seasons. Idk if others have had those thoughts especially bc in some way it’s been lampshaded with the Barb cover story.

I never thought about it that way but you're absolutely right!! Now I want somebody who has more knowledge than me to do a blow-by-blow comparing season 1 against Chernobyl or some equally prestigious piece of nuclear-disaster literature, because I'm really curious about whether that tracks, too. Just given the era and the anxieties of the era.

The ways in which it's lost all finesse, I think, are part sophomore slump (the show was a pet project in development for something like ten years before Netflix picked up season one, and then they wanted like a season a year after that? Or something along those lines?), part Franchising Is The Death Of Art, and part the Duffers just letting success go to their heads. The more I hear about the behind-the-scenes, the more sense I get that the showrunners just...don't put a lot of thought into what they make. Part of it is almost certainly time crunch, and part of it is absolutely economic pressure (the fabled Studio Meddling, and the studio is, instead of beholden to the companies who'd run ads during the show's runtime, beholden to the companies who'd buy product placement), and then there's the whole 'the US military won't let you use their infrastructure as props/sets if your film or TV show is too openly critical of the US military' thing.

But enough other showrunners work around these forces in interesting ways that it becomes really obvious how simply lazy a lot of the Duffers' choices are. They just pick something they think sounds cool and run with it. And that's a great way for every bias or anxiety or grudge they've ever had and not examined to float up to the surface to get skimmed off and shoved into their show.

I really do think that they set out with good intentions, in terms of 'outcasts' and challenging social norms. I just think that they've got a bunch of big ol' blind spots that they maybe don't even realise they have, have never examined, and now have an army of fans telling them aren't actually problems and they don't need to change anything. Honestly, it's the same problem a lot of actual 80s media has - John Hughes' whole canon is based off of this kind of 'identification with the outsider' thing, but. Well, Long Duck Dong exists.

It's the assumption that the white straight dude is the default, and everybody can relate to him, and should relate to him, and that if He is ever outcast then something is Wrong in Society - but hey, if people oppress women or gays or minorities, that's just how things work. And it's frustrating to see unironically and uncritically repeated in something that's patting itself so loudly and enthusiastically on the back about how it's All For The Freaks! (So Long As They're, You Know, Our Kind Of Freaks.)

Also it sounds like these motherfuckers keep ignoring the characterisation notes Winona Ryder is giving them and they Will one day die by my blade for disrespecting her. She's got more creative integrity, talent, and hard-earned skill in her little finger than the both of them have in their entire bodies. Put together. She made your careers you dumb fucking walnuts, do you think anybody would have cared that much about season one if it hadn't had Winona fucking Ryder in it????????

Anyway. On a less depressing note. I absolutely do have some Jonathan and Robin interactions I can share, and I'm going to pop them in a separate post because this one turned into a bummer, because I am a bummer. Expect that in a minute or two!
