SaL anon here bestie wishing you a happy start to the weekend. Sorry I've been scarce, I'm finishing up my 95th illness this year and desperately missing mask mandates, but I really wanted to yell about the gloriousness of Boston (the episode, though the city's pretty great too). I really couldn't tell you about the accuracy of the city's depiction since it was hard to see through all the tears, I was more or less on a constant state of sobbing during the episode. And i've really, really TBC
been wanting to do a song, but I've been so stuck on which one to do. My criteria of "it should be about healing and moving forward" and "should involve water imagery" hasn't been especially helpful in narrowing things down, but I will get there!! Fortunately (not really) I have time since we have over a week till next episode. Aside from that I've been enjoying all the salt throw KR and LD's way while trying not to think too hard about having to put up with that character all season. I think you already said it, but as a fellow RNM veteran you know keeping expectations low doesn't always work, some showrunners have a knack for managing to sink even lower. I do find it interesting all the promo has been focused on the dispatch fire which isn't happening for a few episodes. Wonder why they don't want to show us all the cool fire rescues that are surely happening in the intervening episodes 🙄. At least we have time to prep for Eddie's breakdown.
Hello my friend! I meant to answer this on Friday but my mental state about the show has been Not Great Actually sooooo that's been fun 🙃 I'm so sorry you've been sick again though 🥺 I wish I could help with a song choice, but if I have to think too hard about Madney I want to cry and wrap them both in blankets until they're smiling and happy again 😭😭😭
As for keeping expectations low, yeah it's SO HARD, because we know there is good stuff coming up with Eddie in therapy and Buck being In The Room, and Eddie possibly coming back to work, BUT then there is all the interviews and stuff and knowing what the person in charge (for the most part) thinks about Buck and Eddie, and getting teased with Eddie maybe coming back in 5x16/5x17 but LD still being there filming for the finale and knowing that KR wrote and directed the finale....there's just a lot there to make you lose hope, ya know? I know everyone is on the "vow renewal "oh" moment for Buddie" train, but unless Tim steps in and writes that scene like he did for The Will and The Scene With Chris, then we are likely going to end more on the "massive amounts of tay-kay being shoved into scenes she didn't belong in and trying to pretend that this is a cute couple moment when all anyone sees is a deeply traumatized Buck being taken advantage of" side of things like we did with 4x14. (Unpopular opinion, but 4x13 is a better episode by far because that shooting scene is a cinematic masterpiece, that KR undercut at every turn in 4x14 from having tay-kay being the ONLY one to see Buck in the aftermath, to being there at the "party" instead of ANYONE in the firefam, to Bobby's weird behavior towards Buck when everyone expected him to be more understanding. The three saving grace scenes were the immediate aftermath of the shooting, The Chris Scene, and The Will Scene, two of which we know KR didn't think were important and that Tim put in because he said they needed to be there.)
ANYWAY, I'm hoping after 5x13 we'll have a better idea of how much LD we are going to have to put up with and what her and Buck's dynamic will look like, in comparison to what the interviews touted. Because even the GA are pissed about her and her taking up screen time and NO ONE wants to see her being "flirty" with Buck, especially while he still has a gf. Them using those interviews to prop up this new "best pals with sexual tension" idea instead of "Buck is in a dark place and making bad choices because of it" really, really killed this arc before it ever started. Fandom has made far more excuses for Buck's behavior than those interviews did, playing it off like it's a fun thing that makes Buck feel alive again and brings joy back into his dreary existence because his gf was making him miserable and that....that has left a really sour taste behind for everyone. So here's hoping they will lean more into the idea that Buck is actually spiraling out and cut as much of their interactions as they can. Given the immediate and deeply negative response to her character, I'm doubtful there's anything they can do to salvage her now, the only question is will they be able to adapt enough with this 3 week break to salvage Buck's character, and salvage their ratings and reviews.
Because right now things are....pretty abysmal as seen by the fact that it's nearly impossible to spot LD in any official clips or posts or synopsis so they can keep from getting negative comments on them. But if she's not promoted as being in the episode and then is heavily featured, especially if she's flirting and being buddy-buddy with Buck, the backlash will be even louder afterwards, just like it was with Tay-Kay. And maybe more so, because 5a was when casual viewers really started getting tired of the show not focusing on the main characters, especially with two of them missing, meaning we should have been able to focus better on them since there was more time with less characters to split it between. But KR chose to use that time for a character people already didn't like (and knowing how much stuff got cut to wedge her into episodes I can't fully buy the "oh we needed more filler footage and she was cheap" excuse. They're already paying the mains for every episode, why not use them? Or use Ravi who the GA is actually fond of and wanted to know more about and is also already getting paid instead of having to pay someone new to be in an episode, and cut already filmed and edited scenes to put her in? Sounds like passing the blame to me). And then those interviews came out and made it sound like LD is a new main character who isn't leaving any time soon and just fits in SO well with the team and everyone loves her, and she's SO cool and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Now viewers who have just been waiting for our mains to have storylines again are doubly pissed, so I think they will be even harder on her than tay-kay especially with the cheating plot making everything a thousand times more awkward and cringy.
I also enjoy reading the salt and people's reactions and the backlash, but unfortunately, all the salt in the world (though it feels good in the moment) doesn't change the fact that we're still stuck with what we're going to have to see on screen. And we're stuck with it because someone in charge refuses to follow through on the narrative that's been set up by 4 other seasons of this show. By writing, and acting, and directing, and lighting, and consuming, and editing, and music choices. It's deeply frustrating to watch a narrative be betrayed like that, as any RNM veteran knows (or anyone who has watched a show with a "true soulmates" structure that inexplicably went with "lets watch them both happily date and fall in love with at least 3 other people before we let them get together in the final season). It's frustrating that they would rather tank a beloved character's creditability to push him with these awful women he never should be going after just to create some pointless teen-show drama, than allow this love story to finish unfolding in a natural way. We are on the precipice of it going on too long to logically explain why it didn't happen sooner and after that point anything well begin to feel more like a bone being thrown because "it's the last season who cares if we lose viewers now".
And who knows! We might get an "oh" moment for Eddie or a third party confession this season (though at this point I kinda hope not because KR doesn't deserve ANY of the praise or credit for it, and this season doesn't deserve that honor) or beginning of the next, but that doesn't mean that this whole thing with LD was needed, or if she's barely there that it wasn't as "bad" as we thought it would be, it simply means that they had to majorly course correct after bleeding viewers and getting trashed online for this juvenile cheating plot in a show that's usually above such cheap drama. Everyone has been saying since season 4 that things felt different and that season 5 has been messy, inconsistent, and definitely not the show people fell in love with. Here's hoping that's enough to bring about some changes before there's no magic left to save.

ghost!tommy au masterpost #2
ghost tommy au masterpost part one
I made another one. w hhh
au summary: tommy loses his final canon life during the explosion right after the pogtopia vs. manberg war
Nobody really knew where he’d gone either - Tommy had allegedly gone “missing” after the festival. In L’manberg, everyone figured that while it was odd, since tommy would usually be running down the Prime path shouting, or just being generally loud and annoying... he was just... missing. Nobody had seen him all week, but everyone had thought they were the singular individual who hadn’t seen him lately. Eventually when one of them asked where he’d been, everyone came to the consensus that they weren’t the only ones who hadn’t seen him. At first, they thought he was just grieving, since he spent the most time with wilbur. But then ghostbur shows up, which, while was a pretty sad/happy moment, it raised some sort of unease....
.... and then, ghost tommy shows up.
I put more details under the cut!!! enjoy pain yall
feel free to send asks about... well, anything! if you found something interesting here, share it! if you’ve got a completely unrelated idea, share it! i like to read your asks. I promise i’ll answer... eventually... (the five asks in my inbox @ me: 👀)

.... a revival? phil no -
1. Ghost!Tommy’s Appearance
(should... should I be calling him ghostinnit now? yall use that term a whole lot...)
before he meets anyone (excluding ghostbur and maybe philza. some others might’ve seen him lingering around certain places, faintly), he looked simultaneously exactly as he did before he died, overlaid by his prior deaths (an sword/axe(?) to the back when trying to escape dream during eret’s betrayal, an arrow wound that goes in deep, and currently, visible blast marks and the wither effect). He hadn’t figured out what he looked like yet, other than the noticeable vision problems, but when he did, he did his best to change his form (it’s my current theory that ghosts look like what they want to look like - ie. ghostbur’s nice yellow sweater being a choice on his end). It’s an effort, to look “okay”, and when he goes off the rails, there are hints to what he looks like.
it’s mostly because... Tommy remembers his death vicariously.  All of them. This is not a good thing.
when he does meet people, his form is slightly transparent, but he looks almost normal. there’s that new hairstyle, which really isn’t a stylistic choice on my end ;’] ... there is a lot of sooty(?) grey patches on his sleeves, and a large black mark smack dab in the middle his shirt. The wither markings on his hands aren’t clear, but that they are there is visible. He hates the wither effects the most - no matter what he does, how hard he concentrates, they. don’t. go. away.
He’s got hair over his eye, like wilbur. Gets uncomfortable when it’s joked about, because that’s a part of his face that’s.... yknow.... and he can’t hide it otherwise
Since ghost!tommy is more emotionally gripped than ghostbur is, unable to let go of the past and all the memories + emotions from it (while ghostbur lets go of it Very Easily), his form shifts a lot. Not only to his “death form” (all of his canon deaths on one ‘current’ form), but to that of the different arcs - dirty long sleeves for pogtopia (it’s cold in the ravines, and he don’t got a coat), ripped revolutionary outfit (eret’s betrayal and the arrow both happened here)... and during his more mellower moments, a green bandana that goes around the neck. He’s constantly changing in clarity, too. It’s hard to focus on him at times.
2. Relationships with the SBI found family gang: pain
did you really think we could have nice things in this au? if so... ouch
Phil
tommy did see him sort of as a dad/some sort of older figure to come to for help. but phil has a history of not exactly being a Dad. sure, he basically adopted techno, and wilbur definitely saw him as a dad, but for tommy, it’s an unspoken relationship that they should be like that, that phil should have his back, that tommy can ask phil for help. yet, they don’t. Phil showed up way too late in the game to make an effort on all of the impacts the wars and pogtopia and wilbur have created, and maybe tommy resents him a little, for leaving him and his brothers alone on the server. maybe tommy saw wilbur die by philza’s hands, moments before he did the same point is, tommy was never a “difficult child” persay, he made all of his complaints loud and clear. philza didn’t expect to do any “underneath the underneath” with him... and didn’t feel like tommy needed the attention all that much, since he could basically occupy himself.
Think of it like this, at least in my au, that phil was never meant to be a dad. He just chose to be some sort of strong figure in the boys’ lives (found family!!!!) - but he was a survivor first and foremost, and sometimes it shows. His habits rubbed off on his boys, and that shows too - him avoiding talking about Big Things with ghost tommy is reminiscent of how ghostbur dances around questions, and being pressured into doing things is reminiscent of techno.
Tommy, on the other hand, felt as if phil always favored techno, and if not techno, then wilbur, over him. it’s okay though! he doesn’t need phil, he’s a Big Man™! Look at him... dealing with... a war... exile... funky brother problems... more war... okay maybe if phil showed up sooner things would’ve been better but he didn’t so tommy had to be the bigger man! that’s... that’s okay...? hmm. okay maybe he’s mad at phil a little bit,,,,
techno
ahh, complicated relationships *rubs hands*.
tommy was proud of his brother, at first, the way only little brothers can be, bragging about their cooler bigger bro - that, and tommy lowkey thought there’d be someone to help him with wilbur’s decline. haha NOPE. techno don’t do emotional. thanks,,,,,
on the other hand, all ghost tommy can remember is techno being the unspoken favorite, the favorite child, the favorite brother, teasing and feelings of inadequacy (techno wasn’t a bad brother, though... just... better). And then…he remembers techno showing up well into wilbur’s long decline, techno’s silence when he could’ve used someone to speak up for him, techno’s passiveness towards the paranoia, techno’s stoicism when all tommy wanted was someone to be strong, someone else to be the better man. instead, the job was left to him. why was it always left to him? he wasn’t supposed to do all of this, right?
Techno doesn’t feel all too bad about it, before tommy’s death is discovered. He thinks that the impact of the statement was made through humiliation and violence enough (tommy being pinned down, the hero speech, the ruined victory, etc). What did tommy expect, using the Blade like that? honestly, techno’s a little offended, that tommy thought he could use his brother that easily, like some weapon made of more skill than any of them know what to do with. Techno had made his opinions very clear on government, and then they go on to appoint another one? (even though, it was sort of clear that the goal was to “go back” to the old lmanberg, government and all) so tommy kinda had it coming. besides, he’d respawn and they’d go back to normal.
but then wilbur dies, permanently, and techno has to watch his brother come undone into something else barely reminiscent of what he was momnents ago... ghostbur barely even resembles the wilbur techno used to remember. death matters, on this server, which is two blows in themselves that techno will have to deal with. and then... tommy doesn’t respawn.
techno was sure he’d seen tommy around lmanberg. albeit, like, kinda quiet, but maybe the kid was going through rough times since wilbur died. it wasn’t like techno was going to talk to him about it or anything, since his presence probably wouldn’t be welcomed anyway. tommy was kind of immature, in that regard - he’d be really annoying and yell, like he always did when something didn’t go his way. that, and he wasn’t exactly welcome in lmanberg anymore...
besides, if tommy had a problem, he’d make it clear himself, right?
wilbur/ghostbur
There’s a lot tommy isn’t willing to talk, about wilbur. What could he even say? more than half of the things he did, challenges he stepped up to, were to make Wilbur proud (as he remembered him). He hated losing, because he liked winning more, sure, but also because he wanted to make wilbur proud of him. See: the bow duel, giving up his disc for freedom.
but pogtopia wilbur, well... things only got worse. sometimes, things looked a little better, but over time, tommy learned to expect what came after. even with techno there, tommy was always left to be the “bigger man” - in the aftermath of the festival, the pit, the final pet war - no matter how much he lost, it was always him having to move forward from that point. nobody really helped. it was just tommy and wilbur, and the sound of silence in the ravine.
tommy saw the final explosion of lmanberg as both the ultimate betrayal (the worst thing wilbur could’ve done, couldn’t he have waited, phil was here, surely phil couldve done what tommy spent months trying to do, what techno wouldn’t do, why couldn’t wilbur have this?) but at the same time, he... figured wilbur would pull sometime like this. at this point, the victory might’ve lightened his spirits a whole lot, but he spent months with wilbur alone and in the course of the preparatory week, wilbur didn’t miraculously get better. tommy wishes he did, and he can wish all he wants, but deep down, he knows that he didn’t. the others might’ve not noticed, since they weren’t there for that long.
as for ghostbur, it’s... awkward.
With ghostbur, he’s stuck between wanting to reach out to his big brother and stay away due to alivebur’s memory living in constant loop in his head. Sad as it is to say, he was sort of… relieved, when ghostbur revealed the extent of his memory loss. after that point..  if ghostbur remembers all the happy bits of their time on the server, surely he could help fill in the gaps?
Ghostbur was kind of the first person he saw when he resurfaced, and ghostbur then couldn’t really understand the gravity of the situation, nor who tommy was because of how he acted and looked before. tommy didn’t approach him either, mostly out of fear and anticipation. (he couldn’t imagine this of all things, being stuck with wilbur for all of his undying days, hadn’t he had enough?)
At first, it’s awkward. He doesn’t know what to say, or when to say things, and he’s a lot quieter than in life, so it’s noticeable. He meets Ghostbur, who greets him with joy, until he realizes that Tommy is dead. Memories of the manberg v pogtopia war arise, and he flees. He does not come back, because looking at Tommy hurts. tommy doesn’t get it, really... but.....
and every moment after that, the way ghostbur looks at him, with the guilt in his eyes, the way that he looks away, unable to bear looking anymore… well, tommy is starting to think ghostbur remembers a lot more than what he’s willing to let on (he’s afraid he is). If wilbur doesn’t like him, that’s not… that’s nothing new, anyway. it’s probably one of the few things that didn’t change.
3. Ghost Tommy’s Memories
Going by the HC that they’re caused by how you feel when you die. ie. Wilbur dies happy because he is relieved by Phil stabbing him. That he can rest, while Tommy gets the opposite. Wanting to live but having it so cruelly taken by a loved one that you trusted, only feeling pain and betrayal and the feelings when they had while dying is the reason why they only hold certain memories.
Basically: like Wilbur, only remembers memories associated with a type of feeling. However, unlike Wilbur, Tommy only remembers the bad things.
Ghostbur suggested to phil, who in turn, suggested to tommy that he recorded his memories in a book, like he did! thus, tommy’s “What I remember” book: which is full of stuff he just wants to remember
Dream Good Times (this is just a lie, haha... but refers to the time (read: blank space) before the first disk war)
jokes! (when you make fun of someone, even in good jest, it’s possible they won’t take it that way themselves.)
My home (because it’s been griefed and destroyed so many times at this point)
The disks (not what they sound like though, just that they were apparently important, that he fought for them. he can’t remember what they sound like)
My pets (pet wars. can’t remember whose pet was whose. he remembers mars, though. he talked to mars a lot, on days that pogtopia was quiet... empty...)
the duel
Winning the war (trading the disks for freedom)
L’manberg (manberg)
… Tubbo (? ...dying at the festival.)
Techno & Wilbur  (and phil, and what they did to him, and what they didn’t do.)
pogtopia hanging out with friends (there was nothing good about pogtopia, so he crossed it off and wrote the most blandest happy thing he could replace it with. he wishes pogtopia was just that)
the pit
winning the war (the victory, the explosion his death. if you ask why he wrote it twice, he just.. hesitates. “we won, right?” you might nod along, assuming his memory was just being faulty, that all he could remember were the two victories, that like wilbur, nothing beyond the election/exile registered... but you could also note that neither of those “victories” really felt like winning, in the end. consider the cost...)
i have a secret second list for his “actual memories”. i call it “the list of grievances”. i am so clever haha
4. other ghost tommy stuff
since ghostbur had to go and add some stuff to ghost Lore™, i guess ghost tommy now melts in the rain and snow. not that he really... cares...
other things! these are ideas, idk...
1. presence
maybe whenever he gets near someone, the temperature drops and people feel overwhelmingly negative emotions (ie. sadness, pain, anger, guilt, etc). the intensity of the sadness effect depends on the person or if the person is near - the more that person had done, the more they felt.
Wilbur just feels like melancholy. nobody really notices, since it’s .... well.
2. connections to things?
maybe he’ll be found at certain locations, like his house/jukebox, the election podium, pogtopia, etc, etc... just, ghosting...
4. maybe he’s not actually dead
3. have some blue .... or yellow
either:
a) ghostbur gives tommy some blue to hand out, trying to be nicer to him anyway, like “give people this, it makes people happier if you give them something to drain the sadness”!! but when tommy tries to hand it out, it’s already fully blue. If asked if it was supposed to be transparent, or why it’s already blue, or etc, he responds with “no it's always been blue for me!” because when he’s given it, it turns blue instantly. maybe he seems little sad it doesn’t work on him, but it must be because he’s a ghost, right?
or
b) maybe he makes yellow that gives people happiness (it turns transparent as it’s used), but when he holds it it stays yellow.... because really all it does is draw up previous feelings of contentment, but... can't feel happy if you've never felt it before :’]
4. his body discovery
his body can be found where it was last... left. since he didn’t respawn.
They find him while cleaning up the rest of the rubble. and it's evident how he died, because there are wither marks, explosion burns, and... a final injury that must’ve been the killing blow, since there’s no way he would’ve survived that. it's evident he suffered, but not from the killing blow. his face has that... expression. he looks as miserable as his ghost does, at times (contrary to wilbur's exact opposite). maybe techno is there. they're not sure if tommy just got caught in the crossfire. they think he did, because he was buried under all of this. who would have ... intentionally done this to him...? while he was trapped?
maybe techno approaches to see what everyone looks so wicked out by. and he sees his brother or more like, what was left of his brother. oof.
5. Pranks: completely out of chronological order i guess... BUT I WANTED TO INCLUDE IT AAA
tommy isn’t... peaceful. he’s not at peace. he’s surrounded by the people who he can remember taunting him, hurting him, betraying him, all he can remember feeling is anger, grief and resentment - how long do you think he’ll play nice for? even though he wants things to go back to normal, either he feels like he’s much too dead for anything to ever be the same, and/or everyone ... moved on pretty quick, huh.
tommy begins to prank the server, like he used to. but there’s a pattern to it, and it quickly devolves from seemingly light-hearted to borderline malicious and definitely inconveniencing/annoying.
ghost tommy filling dream's current base/go-to-residency (since this man canonically homeless) with clay... and then, later, other blocks, like tnt, obsidian...
he sets up multiple jukeboxes when dream goes to sleep and have them all play cat/melohi at different intervals at once, kind of like. "you wanted this so bad, now eat it”.
misplace sapnap's current pets (if he has any). fill sapnap's house with horses, cows all named "h" names, and eventually turn it into an elaborate aquarium filled with tropical fish.
George’s house gets scrambled: like the blocks all get swapped and stuff, or replaced with lime wool/clay. maybe fill his house with alarm clocks or something? idk
He's hesitant about techno... so one of his earlier steps is: collaborate with sam with the horse maze (who sees it as a bonding activity! fun for the whole family!), but in the books, on the last page of all the books, he writes notes like "you know what you did" and stuff idk, i gotta come up with 8 of those. at the end, skeppy brings back the books and the hornse and techno's like haha i didn't write those books! and skeppy says, that makes sense! why would your write this... (he assumes the first few are threats, but then they reference techno in diff ways, so he gets confused), and then techno's like: wait what
maybe he probably releases all the horses n cows and other things techno’s got. or relocates them (cause he still cares about animals, he doesn't want to hurt them... he's not sapnap after all)
at first it's funny, normal. then it's annoying. and then it becomes worrying. it elevates in destructive tendencies, and also escalates in amount so people start going "tommy this is so annoying"-> exactly the reaction he wants, so he continues -> "this isn't funny anymore, tommy!" well, it never was supposed to be :)
....and they realize suddenly that none of it was meant to be a "prank" or a joke, tommy genuinely was trying to make their lives as hard as they did him.
ALSO EDIT: i bring you: dreamon hunters! part two! tubbo n fundy fight over what to do with ghost tommy, as tubbo doesn't think there's anything wrong with tommy (it’s his best friend, of course nothing’s wrong!), while fundy thinks he's a malicious poltergeist (with all the pranks.... that’s... that’s not tommy. tommy isn’t that spiteful... is he? )

Monday
I wrote the following brief scenes a while ago as part of a potential story that refused to coalesce. It may yet, someday, but for now this is merely a scrap of unfruited AU narrative; I’m posting only to prove to myself that I’m not completely incapable of doing writing-related things, even if it’s just tidying up generic, trope-y bits of dialogue. I intended Christina, about age seven, to be an important story lever in this, with this Myka and this single-mom Helena as coworkers of some sort (I was thinking insurance, possibly, because risk management has been on my mind). Such fuzziness was part of why the story as such never took off... in any event, it doesn’t matter. Here is what does matter: if you are a U.S. citizen who is able to vote, do it; choose Biden/Harris and every down-ballot Democrat. This HAS TO BE a landslide repudiation of that horrific, corrupt individual and the party that enables him.
Monday
Turning points arrive in their own time.
Myka and Helena were eating lunch together. That in itself was of course not unusual, for they were colleagues and friends. And as colleague-friends, they tended to eat lunch together.
“You seem upset,” Myka noted. Helena was picking at a salad, but differently than she usually picked at her salads. Usually she picked because she was picky and would eat only the most pleasing elements; today she was merely moving salad components from one region of the plate to another.
“I’m not upset.”
“But you seem upset.”
“Well... I have to break an engagement. It’s impolite.”
Being forced into incivility was indeed the kind of thing that would drive Helena to stab, lift, and re-place arugula. “Why do you have to break an engagement?”
“You know Mrs. Carter, the neighbor who usually sits with Christina. She was called out of town. An ill relative. This morning—but I had plans tonight.”
“Could your plans happen at your house instead? Without sitting?”
Helena wrinkled her brow. “It’s a first date. Far too soon to bring a new person into Christina’s life like that.”
A first date. The words punched Myka hard, leaving a queasy burning in their wake. Her analytical side leapt to make sense of this extreme response: It’s the first time you’ve heard Helena say anything about such a thing, so it surprised you. You’ve never liked surprises; ergo, you’re just reacting poorly to being surprised. Because of course Helena would go on a first date, because of course she would want to find someone, someone to be with, and Myka didn’t know why that hadn’t occurred to her before, but she and Helena hadn’t really talked much about relationships, so maybe Helena went on a lot of first and other dates that she hadn’t bothered mentioning to Myka, and maybe that meant their friendship wasn’t as close as Myka had thought, because maybe they really were more colleagues than friends, and... Okay, just stop. Whatever this is, stop. She breathed her way through the aftermath of the punch and said, “I’ll do it, then. Babysit.”
“You will?”
“You were planning to go out. You should go out.”
“You haven’t asked me with whom.”
“That’s probably not my business,” Myka said, because it wasn’t, despite her unexpected, inappropriate impulse to claim it as entirely her business. Just stop.
“Claudia’s new manager in platform development. Claudia described her to me as, and I quote, ‘absolute fire.’ Which I presume is good.”
“So you asked her out.”
“No, she asked me. And I said yes, because... well, is there a reason I shouldn’t?”
Was that intended as bait? But it couldn’t have been. Logicking it out again: Myka had never felt such a weird surge (no, a twitch, it was only a twitch) of possessiveness before; thus Helena couldn’t have identified it so quickly, and with such precision, that she would immediately challenge Myka on the point. Could she? “Of course not,” Myka said. “What time do you want me to show up?”
*
That evening, Myka kept her still-reeling gut at bay by concentrating on Christina, who was delighted to have Myka all to herself. “You and Mom talk about boring things,” she pronounced as soon as her mother left. “Tonight you don’t have to do that!”
No... all Myka had to do was imagine what sorts of non-boring things Helena was talking about with her date who was absolute fire. But she managed not to do too much of that imagining, at least while Christina was awake, while they were building with Legos and renaming her plastic and puffy animals and manipulating slime. This latter was a fad that had, according to Christina, faded some time ago, but she found the texture soothing; she asked Myka, very seriously—as if Myka’s verdict would be the final word on the subject—whether that meant it was okay not to give it up. Myka said that in her experience, truly calming things were few and far between, so she thought it was more than okay. Christina enjoyed the phrase “few and far between.”
Myka was tempted to let Christina stay up late, late and later, but she supposed it wasn’t fair to deprive a child of sleep just to rescue herself from herself.
She fell asleep on the sofa, and that was a blessing; she didn’t have to hear Absolute Fire’s car, didn’t have to think about anything that might be happening in that car. She awoke just as Helena was stepping inside and taking off her coat. Helena turned around and smiled, and Myka struggled to sit up and look alert, saying a sleep-hoarse “sorry” as she did.
“What for? Being asleep at ten at night? That seems reasonable. Ideally I’d have been asleep by now, if I’d been home.”
“It’s only ten?”
“Dinner was short. The fire may be absolute as far as Claudia is concerned, but there were no sparks that I could see. Or feel.”
Thank god, Myka thought, too fervently. Then, Just stop. Aloud, she tried for indifference: “Maybe Claudia should go out with her instead.”
“Maybe she should. Did my own small bit of fire behave herself?”
“She was great. I’m never going to fully appreciate the appeal of slime... but I can report that bath, story, and bed were peaceful. No conflagration.” This news would make Helena happy: meltdowns at bedtime were common. Christina was often fearful of some unspecified something that would happen overnight, and she was never clear on whether it would be a good something or a bad something, just something, of which she would be unaware.
Helena did, in fact, smile her relieved “Christina is fine for tonight” smile. “Did she wear you out completely? Or might you stay for a glass of wine?”
“Weird way for you to end your date. A drink with the babysitter?” Trying to sound normal. Like the friend she was.
“Better than the date. No, that’s too callous. It was fine. But it wasn’t anything.”
Myka had the drink. Just the one, slowly, as they sat and talked about what Christina would have deemed “boring things”... but Helena had two. And a half. She was eyeing the bottle like she might be inclined to head for it again, so Myka said, “I really should go.”
Helena said, “Should you?” Myka wanted (wanted so much) to make of that what she was pretending she didn’t want to make of it, but she determined instead to make nothing of it. No one should make anything of what anyone said when they’d had a couple of drinks at the end of a long week. And at the end of a failed date, she reminded herself, then cringed at the pleasure she took in knowing that it had failed. Whatever this is, stop.
Standing by the front door, Helena gave her a vaguely unsteady half-hug, a clasp of her left arm around Myka’s shoulders. Myka didn’t want to not reciprocate—trying now to act normal, like the friend she was—so she let herself move her own left arm fully around Helena’s waist, allowed herself to rest her hand for just the press of a second on Helena’s hip.
For that press of a second, Myka leaned close and inhaled against the sharp sweet angle of Helena’s cheekbone. For that press of a second, a slide to a kiss was a warm looming certainty; then the second passed, and it was a receding dream. Myka released Helena’s body and said, “I’ll see you Monday.”

NOTE: I’d say “TBC,” but since I don’t know whether this will ever function as part of a larger piece, I’ll leave it as a little misfit story-island. You know B&W will find their way to each other; they’re just not quite connecting, in that “this friendship means everything to me and I can’t stand the idea of blowing it” way, on both sides. Anyway I’m not sure who these characters really are, other than coworkers and friends (who clearly need to be something more); plus there’s a gaping hole where a plot should be. Why are these people here? What are they doing? Should any reader care? I have no idea. Again, here is what matters: vote vote vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and Democratic Senate, House, and local candidates.

Sitting ramrod straight with her fingers tightly interwoven in her lap, Moira waited to be called into Agent Fury’s office.
The walk back into the building she had so unceremoniously left only three days before was nerve-racking enough. Waiting for an interview, which should have started several minutes ago, with one of the highest-ranking officials in the CIA was enough to make her heart attempt to escape the confines of her rib cage.
The man who had approached her in the parking lot – Nick Fury, as she now knew – wanted to recruit her for an organisation she had never heard of, worked in a part of the building she had never known existed, and was permanently tailed by a small team of staff who seemed capable of glaring the fur off a monkey. Today was no exception, as he approached his office with several people in tow, two of whom looked ready to march into battle rather than walk the halls at Langley.
“MacTaggert.” He said calmly, his staff dissipating as he spoke her name. “With me.”
Following him into his sparsely decorated office, Moira dropped into the seat he waved her towards while he shrugged off his coat. Glancing out the window, Fury seemed interested in something happening downstairs and looked there thoughtfully for a moment before giving her his attention.
“Why did you resign from the agency?” Fury asked bluntly, although Moira had a sense he already knew everything that had happened.
“I think resign is a very nice way to put it.” Moira experimented, and when Fury’s lip twitched infinitesimally she was confident he at least knew she had called McCone an ass. “I didn’t feel that I could make any more progress within the organisation, sir.”
“You don’t work here anymore, MacTaggert. You don’t have to call me sir.” He said, leaning against the windowsill. “And I agree with you. The CIA is meant to deal with all external threats to the country. But if anything, these recent events seem to have proven that the CIA is perhaps not the organisation best equipped to deal with these... shall we call them unexplainable events?”
“I don’t think I’m the right person to comment on that.”
“On the contrary. At this moment in time, I think you are one of the few people who can. Given your recent history and your interactions with Mr Xavier. I’m quite interested to hear your judgement on the situation – about how the CIA handled it.”
“You know what happened to me?”
“I dare say at this point I know more than you do.”
“That’s not exactly an accomplishment.” Moira scoffed, shifting in her seat uncomfortably. “Look, I don’t understand why I’m here. I know you said you work with a group called S.H.I.E.L.D, yet no one I know seems to have heard of it.”
“You’re not friends with anyone who has that level of clearance.” Fury said, finally moving to sit at his desk after he gave up looking for... whatever he had been looking for outside. “I work for S.H.I.E.L.D and act as a liaison with this agency. And others. I’m not usually based here but I have eyes in this building. And I’ve worked in this capacity long enough to recognise you as a potential asset.”
Moira slowly shook her head and glanced around the room. There was none of the usual CIA insignia that was in her supervisor’s offices. Then again there was no other symbol, nothing to give her any indication of what S.H.I.E.L.D was and certainly not what it did.
“S.H.I.E.L.D was established after the Second World War and is a subsidiary of the United Nations.” Fury said, watching her carefully. “The name stands for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division.”
“That’s quite the mouthful.”
“Hence the acronym.” Fury deadpanned. Moira bit back a smile. “S.H.I.E.L.D came about in the wake of what was called the Super Soldiers Initiative, which was run during the war. An experimental programme launched to create an army of advanced humans who could fight the war for us. You ever heard of Captain America?”
“The comic book character?” She asked, frowning as she struggled to recall the covers of the comics her Dad had collected and the one story he had told her about the stage show he had seen while stationed in Europe. There was a vague memory of a radio show about him too. “He’s fictional.”
“Aren’t we all.” He said coolly. “I know a lot of people who doubt your story MacTaggert. After your experiences, after what you’ve seen, are you still so quick to dismiss something as fantastical just because you haven’t seen it with your own eyes?”
Fury paused, watching as his words sunk in before continuing. “S.H.I.E.L.D is the world’s answer to dealing with the unexplainable. The types of events and people that organisations such as the CIA have proven themselves incapable of dealing with in an appropriate manner.”
“Like mutants?”
“Exactly.”
“If you think the CIA is so incapable, why do you want me?” She asked, still confused about why she had been approached. “I was part of the Mutants Division. Apparently. And from what I’ve been told, we nearly started World War Three.”
“Regardless of how things ended, your work impressed us. Your ability to keep a level head, even when seeing something no one else would think possible. Being able to differentiate between those who wanted to use their abilities for good instead of presuming that anything different is something to be feared. How you were able to gain the trust of individuals who had lived their entire lives working to keep their abilities secret...”
Moira cut him off. “I don’t even remember doing any of that. I don’t even know if I did that.”
Fury leaned back in his chair and for the first time since they’d started talking, Moira felt like his full concentration was on her. The power of his stare almost made her want to squirm in her seat but she met his gaze head on. “You’re referring to Xavier’s powers. Mind control?”
“Yes.”
She felt like elaborating. Trying to explain how it feels to wonder if you have control of your mind, your body. To wonder what actions were your own and what was someone else’s. Without the memory of who Xavier was, Moira had no idea what he was like. Of what kind of person he was. It seemed like he had worked against Lehnsherr in Cuba, that he had tried to stop whatever plan had been underway. But was that because he was a good person or because he was working to keep the mutant’s existence a secret? Or because he had some other plan, another ulterior motive? Levene seemed certain that he wanted to help them, that he was kind. But Levene had never had his mind irrevocably tampered with.
In the end, she bit down on the words. She had barely been able to explain it to Levene and he knew he better than most.
“You sought out Xavier after going to the Hellfire Club, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You witnessed mutants demonstrating their powers for the first time. Tell me. What was your initial reaction when you saw them? To threaten them? To call for back up or maybe even kill them? Or, to go to the top-most expert you could find and attempt to learn more about them?”
“Sir...”
“You’re exactly what S.H.I.E.L.D needs.” He stated. “We want you to join us.”
“As an agent?”
Fury nodded in the affirmative.
Moira hesitated. She needed a job but still, “If you’ll forgive me for saying so, sir, I think I’ve had enough of working for nefarious organisations to last me a lifetime.”
“S.H.I.E.L.D is very different from the CIA MacTaggert. Trust me on that.” He assured.
“Why should I?”
His attention fell away from her again as he glanced at his watch. Standing, he headed back over to his coat and pulled it on while Moira remained seated, unsure how to proceed.
“Some people are waiting for us that I would like you to meet.”
Frowning, Moira stubbornly stayed in her chair and repeated her question. “Why should I work for you?
“Because I can help you.” Fury replied, nonplussed by her attitude.
“Help me? Help me how?” She asked, a wave of annoyance threatening to break through her professionalism.
“Help you to get your memories back.”
Fury opened the door for her.
“You can do that?” She was eventually able to say, squeezing her eyes shut for a moment as she processed the idea that she could finally get some answers. That she could finally trust her own mind again.
“Let’s just say we have access to a lot of unusual resources that the CIA doesn’t.” Fury replied, motioning for her to go through the door. “So, MacTaggert. Do we have a deal?”
*          *          *
Glancing back at Fury as he closed the door behind her, Moira was ushered into the dark panelled, windowless conference room where several people were talking amongst themselves. A woman, British if her accent was genuine, was the first to greet her as she moved into the room.
Fury moved to sit at the head of the table and wasted no time in making introductions while everyone moved to organise themselves, depositing and sorting through the folders and files before them, a few of them finishing hushed conversations before they turned to new business.
“Moira MacTaggert, formerly of the CIA. This is Agent Carter, Mr Stark, Colonel Phillips, Dr Samberly and Dr Wilkes.” Fury said, gesturing towards each of them in turn. “Where’s Stoner?” He asked Carter.
Moira briefly felt as though she were on trial as all heads turned to face her as she took a seat, quickly assessing her before turning back to their work.
“Mr Stark? Of Stark Industries?” Moira asked over the shuffling of papers, the name well known to her. Howard Stark was one of the most famous inventors and businessmen in the country.
“Urgent business,” Carter told Fury, explaining Director Stoner’s absence.
Stark gave Moira a roguish grin and shook her hand before taking the seat opposite her. “The one and only.”
What kind of organisation was this, Moira wondered as she took in the faces of those surrounding her. A highly decorated WWII officer, one of the world’s renowned entrepreneurs, two scientists, a female agent – something which particularly intrigued Moira after all her struggles at the CIA – and Agent Fury, one of the youngest people in the room and yet, from what she had seen so far, one who commanded huge respect.
“Agent Carter, Colonel Phillips and Mr Stark founded S.H.I.E.L.D in the late 40s,” Fury started to explain, motioning at the unlikely trio. “S.H.I.E.L.D absorbed their previous organisation.”
“The Strategic Scientific Reserve. S.S.R. for short.” Carter clarified. “We, along with Drs Samberly and Wilkes, worked in the organisation both during and after the war. The organisation was highly classified,” she added, “as is S.H.I.E.L.D. So I expect you understand that anything we discuss with you in this meeting is also classified.”
“Of course.” Moira murmured.
Carter flipped open her CIA personnel file. “Agent Fury has recommended you as a field operative, a position I see you more than qualify for. I don’t know how much he has told you about S.H.I.E.L.D, but you ought to know that working for this organisation will involve a great deal of personal sacrifice. It’s not an easy job and the demands will often be high.”
“Miss MacTaggert.” Dr Samberly nervously asked. “We’ve reviewed files from the Mutants Division...”
“You have those files?” Moira sharply interrupted, watching as his hand unconsciously crept to rest on the papers in front of him.
The mysterious man who had apparently headed the Mutants Division, the man whose facility they had stayed in, was unknown to Moira – though she suspected McCone knew him. Still, the CIA had either been unable or unwilling to request the files which could explain what the division had done during her missing months. Files which Moira was sure would give her more details about her time with Xavier and his team of mutants. Files that could give her some answers.
“They’ll be shared with you should you agree to work with us. You’ll need clearance first, however.” Fury explained.
Thankfully working with the CIA had prepared her well for this level of bureaucratic bullshit, and her face remained impassive despite mentally raving at the idea that she needed clearance to read about her own life.
Samberly continued.
“Yes, well. The files detail your involvement in the Division and the work you contributed to its successes. And needless to say, we are... intrigued,” his eyes jumped around as if looking for confirmation that that was the correct term to use, “by Mr Xavier’s abilities. And those of the other mutants detailed in these files. There are reports of a shapeshifter – which is substantiated by footage – someone capable of manipulating and generating electromagnetic fields, and teleportation. While we have seen...” again his eyes jumped, this time to Dr Wilkes who nodded in encouragement, “people with, frankly unbelievable abilities, they were often unsustainable. Barring the odd case. To see people who have had powers since birth and have relative control over them is something we haven’t seen in large numbers before.”
“And from what we’ve learned they’re not only a growing community but now they’re coming together and forming their own sides.” The Colonel concluded. “Charles Xavier and,” he consulted the papers before him, “Erik Lehnsherr, appear to have opposing views on how mutants should engage with humans. According to these files, Lehnsherr seems to believe in mutant superiority and is opposed to any form of coexistence.”
“At one time he apparently referred to mutants as homo superior. That’s according to the division heads personal notes,” Wilkes interjected.
“Which causes us some concern, although we’ve seen no activity from him since the beach in Cuba. Xavier, on the other hand, seems to believe coexistence is possible.” Colonel Phillips went on. “And that’s certainly an outcome we would like to see as well.”
“So, you want to reach out to them. To Xavier and his... friends.” Moira asked slowly.
She knew that her role in the Mutants Division was the main reason she was being recruited, however, it had failed to occur to her that S.H.I.E.L.D could want her to resume her previous work. To establish communication with the mutants.
If they would let her in without wiping her mind again.
“And of course we want to monitor Lehnsherr, to see if he will develop into a greater threat.”
Moira resisted the urge to touch her neck at Phillips remark, and the faded mark from where Lehnsherr had tried to kill her with her own dog tags. “So you help me get my memories back and in return, I tell you everything I know about Xavier and Lehnsherr?”
“We want more than intelligence,” Carter answered. “You have a unique experience. Not only are you the only, potential, member of our organisation to meet mutants, you were also present to see them come together. You worked alongside Xavier and Lehnsherr as they recruited for the Mutants Division. We don’t know how much information your memories will even reveal. But we do know that you have a prior relationship with many of the people we will be reaching out to. That will go a long way in earning their trust and establishing a relationship between Xavier’s side of this faction and S.H.I.E.L.D.”
Thinking carefully for a moment, Moira looked at the three founders who sat beside each other.
“What do you want from the mutants? Once you make contact.” She asked, unable to explain her sudden wave of... protectiveness? “I don’t even know what S.H.I.E.L.D does – except what you told me before, that you deal with the unexplainable. What does ‘deal with’ even mean, that you want to study them? Use them as agents to fight your battles? Like the Mutant Division did?”
The way Phillips’ eyebrow quirked suggested he wanted exactly that, though apparently he was outvoted on the matter.
“The S.S.R only ever had a handful of operatives in its ranks who possessed inhuman abilities,” Carter said evenly. “S.H.I.E.L.D is the same. Our main purpose – our founding principle – is to protect. Whether that is to protect one man from another or to protect the entire planet against a hostile force. S.H.I.E.L.D maintains global security but that doesn’t mean we just protect humans. We also protect enhanced individuals. We don’t want to experiment on mutants or harm them if they pose no threat to us. And, from what we have learned about Xavier, he seems to pose little threat to the general populace.”
“Barring wiping the occasional person’s memory.” Moira rebutted.
“Without your knowledge, we have no reason to know why he did this,” Carter said. “But we do know he faces potential hostility from Lehnsherr and from hostile members of our species; people who don’t understand what mutants are and who may fear them because of that ignorance. It certainly gives mutants a reason to try and stay hidden. S.H.I.E.L.D can provide support if required and if not, we will leave them in peace.”
“So long as they don’t threaten anyone else’s safety,” Phillips added darkly.
Moira nodded, glancing at the six faces that were watching her intently. They seemed eager to establish a connection with the mutants: they had to be to assemble such a committee to talk to one potential recruit. But she still wasn’t confident that was their only motive.
“How do you plan to get my memories back?” She asked curiously.
Stark leaned forward slightly, taking the lead. “We need to run some tests first. Scans, blood samples,” he waved his hand, “those will determine whether there was any damage to the brain tissue, which has caused your memories to be permanently lost. We’ll also do some psychological assessments to see if there is a natural key to restoring your memories. They could have been blocked or his powers could have removed them completely.”
“So there is a chance it’s permanent?” Moira asked, her stomach dropping with dread. That was what she had feared. That her mind was damaged, perhaps beyond repair.
“Nothing is gone forever. If his powers are purely mental, I doubt he could permanently destroy the synapses. It’s more likely that he’s blocked them somehow.” Stark replied. “And even if the tests do reveal the worst, I think you’ll find we possess some unique technology that could be of use.”
Wilkes spoke up. “We have our labs set up if you would be willing to sit some tests today? I understand it’s getting late and you will want to get home...”
“Tonight will be fine,” Moira said, straightening in her chair. “What do you need?”
The three scientists opened their mouths, looking eager to start, but Phillips hastily interrupted. “Dr Wilkes, why don’t you go with Stark and Samberly to the lab and get everything you need set up. Carter will show MacTaggert the way in just a moment.”
“Of course,” Wilkes said, the three of them hastily collecting their files before half marching out the door. At least someone was looking forward to these tests.
Wilkes cast Carter a look at before shutting the door, although she didn’t appear to notice.
Phillips flipped open one of his files and slid some papers across the desk to Moira.
“What are these, release forms?”
“No. Though I’m sure the eggheads will have plenty of those for you to sign when you go downstairs.” He said, his voice rumbling good-naturedly.
Pulling the files toward her, Moira started flipping through the contracts – unbelievably they were more complicated than the ones the CIA had made her sign when she first became an agent.
“The labs contain some highly classified materials, which you need clearance to see.”
“And to get clearance I need to be an agent.” Moira concluded, scanning the documents before her. At the same time, her mind raced. Did she really want to join S.H.I.E.L.D?
There was a knock at the door and they all fell silent as a tall woman walked in to deliver a message to Phillips.
“We need to get to the next meeting.” He told Agent Fury, standing up. “Carter, would you finish up with MacTaggert?”
“Of course.”
“Ma’am,” Phillips said as he took his leave, Fury barely nodding as he passed her by.
Carter moved into the seat that had been occupied by Mr Stark, so they were opposite from one another.
“Read through the files carefully. I suspect you will be familiar with some of them from your time in the CIA, and I imagine when you joined the Mutants Division you would have signed most of these.”
“I’m not going to have them suing me if I tell you anything about the Division, am I?” Moira grouched as she finished reading the first sheet.
“No, they won’t.”
With a sigh, Moira leant back in her chair. She felt a little more comfortable airing her doubts now there weren’t so many people around. And she had plenty she wanted to discuss before she signed anything. “Did the Mutants Division fall under S.H.I.E.L.D’s remit?”
“No. We had no part in the Mutants Division’s creation or operations. We do have a strong global network however, and, barring the Soviets, most intelligence agencies work in cooperation with us in such circumstances. If they’d followed protocol, this agency should have been made known to us.” Carter studied Moira’s face before giving her a small smile. “You know, when I was first recruited into the intelligence agencies I was very reluctant to join. But I was eventually persuaded that it was the best place for me to be.”
“Why is that?” Moira asked cautiously.
“It was somewhere I could be myself,” Carter replied. “Like me, you possess a specific skill set. However, even having the intelligence, the strength and the determination, it is difficult for us to progress in the world, let alone in organisations like the CIA. The S.S.R was much the same. I was a highly distinguished intelligence operative during the war, only to spend the next few years taking lunch orders for my co-workers. I still fought, and when I got the opportunity to run S.H.I.E.L.D, to reshape the S.S.R. I couldn’t pass it up. I wanted to create an organisation that had no prejudices, that worked to serve the greater good.”
Moira repressed a snort. “Intelligence agencies protect citizens, but I would hardly say they do it for the greater good.”
Carter’s smile widened. “I know. I was very cynical too until I met a man who was so unbelievably idealistic about the world. He was a good man. Someone who would work beside me. I worked to create an organisation he could believe in. And where agents like you could thrive. If you join S.H.I.E.L.D we will work to get your memories back. You can leave afterwards, we wouldn’t stop you. But if you work for it I think you could carve out a real place for yourself here. It won’t be easy, but you’re used to that.” Carter finished, pushing a pen across the desk. “So. Do you just want your past back, or do you want to make yourself a new future?”
Pulling the papers forward, Moira began to reread them again. “And I can leave whenever I want?”
“Yes.”
Moira kept her face impassive as she started to sign the contract. She didn’t trust S.H.I.E.L.D not to lie to her, but then again she didn’t think she was capable of trusting anyone anymore. What she was sure of was that once she had her memories back, they would help her to decide her next move.
Besides, she needed a job.

The Hero (Part One)
Okay, you’ve read the first tiny bit of this, but I’ve gutted the rest and am rewriting it with much more focus. Sorry about the tiny bit of duplication, I hope you enjoy it anyway.
Today I am at work with my Saturday six hour on my feets desk shift, so any entertainment in the form of fic prompts, ideas, screenshots, simple hellos is welcome. My response will be muted, but, trust me, I’ll love every second of it ::hugs you all::
Warnings: Violence...I’ve upped the magnifying factor of my writing focus, so much more detail to behold. Planned to be entirely Gordon POV, something I don’t think I’ve done in the past, so yay for new stuff living inside the Fish’s brain :D Looking at during the incident, but leading into the aftermath...all the off screen stuff from The Joker.
-o-o-o-
A glass of ice and amber liquid landed in front of him with a solid thunk on the woodwork. His eldest brother followed it, his tall figure sliding around the table and taking a seat beside him.
Another glass of alcohol sat in his hand.
Scott didn’t say anything at first, apparently quite happy to nurse the drink against his chest.
Breath whistled through his teeth. “So, what happened?”
Gordon arched an eyebrow before picking up his glass and sipping the whisky. Oooh, Scott’s expensive bottle. Nice.
He took a moment to revel in its warmth before venturing into the bitterness of his report.
“He did well, you know. Put up one hell of a fight. A couple of those guys won’t be getting up any time soon.”
Blue eyes peered at him over the rim of his glass. “Virgil?”
“Kayo taught him well.” A swallow of scorching liquid, smooth as the glass holding it. “There were just too many of them.”
-o-o-o-
A ramshackle pile of a building on an abandoned farm with interference peppering the sensors. It was ironic that Virgil had accompanied him for security. AKA big brother hadn’t wanted him to go into an unknown situation without backup.
Whether the outcome would have changed in accordance with that decision, they would never know, but it led to Gordon taking lead and Virgil following. Consequently, it was Gordon who was nabbed first entering the second dusty room of the building and Virgil who had to exercise his self defence skills.
The hands that grabbed the aquanaut were rough and for a moment the whole room went sideways. He struck out automatically, but was anticipated, his arm wrenched around his back, his knees kicked out under him, and a cold barrel shoved into the base of his skull put a very abrupt end to his defences.
“V-!”
The kick to his ribs silenced him, but his aim had been achieved.
The brother entering the room, froze for just a split second as he processed the situation. Shadows leapt from the darkness, intending on taking him down, but that second, and reflexes drilled into Virgil by his sister, gave him the power to respond.
Virgil’s massive arm swiped away the hands grabbing at him as he spun out of reach. Another shadow leapt out only to encounter an equally massive fist to its face. Virgil’s uniform did its job and protected him from impact, a hard traction boot landing solidly in one man’s guts. A padded elbow hit teeth and those huge gloved hands, usually so gentle, made knuckles as solid as steel - Gordon knew that, one slip on his part in one too many spar sessions had ended in bruises Virgil had apologised for weeks afterwards.
But there were too many, up to half a dozen assailants emerging from the shadows not including those holding Gordon.
The cold ring of metal at the base of his skull dug in deeper as he struggled to free himself and stop the inevitable.
No amount of padding could deflect the flicker of steel in the dark that impacted on his brother’s ribs.
Gordon heard the snap.
Oh god.
Virgil gasped and staggered.
His assailants moved in.
But no, the stubborn bastard didn’t give up. His fist impacted the side of a head and a man ended up in the dust at Virgil’s feet.
But there were too many.
Too many.
“Virgil, no!” They must be getting some pleasure out of this, because there were guns a plenty, but only one deployed. Gordon didn’t know if his brother had even seen them. “Virgil!”
That steel bar flickered in the poor light again and the second time it impacted on his brother, the dull thud was skull bone.
His big brother dropped without a sound.
Dust hung in the air.
“Well, so much for that.” The hot breath on the back of his neck almost overrode the chill of seeing a gun trained on Virgil’s bleeding skull. “Now, time is of the essence. I need access to your ship now, or we will finish him permanently.”
-o-o-o-
“They got me first. Virg was behind me and had that extra second to react. It was unexpected.” It had been well planned. “They...neutralised him.”
He took a swig of his drink and it caught part way down, burning a hole in his throat. “You would have been so proud of him.” It was whispered.
“I am. Of both of you.” A simple statement that said so much.
Gordon rolled his shoulders in an attempt to shake off the echoes of the incident so he could report clearly.
He was only moderately successful.
“They used Virg to get me to do what they wanted.” The words stuck in his throat and he forced steel into his spine, straightening in the chair. The image of his brother discarded and bleeding on Two’s checker-plate decking, a gun pointed at his head.
The soft crack as a boot impacted on his already damaged ribcage.
Gordon didn’t flinch. He was too experienced for that. But it didn’t hurt any less.
Another throat full of burning alcohol attempted to wash the chill away. Maybe he was just out of practise.
“We need to find a way to stop that from happening again.” His voice was parched and he found himself staring off into the distance.
“Kayo’s on it.” The tumbler was lifted from his hand. The clink of glass, the glug of pouring liquid and it reappeared full again.
Gordon took it, an eye flick, his only thank you.
“I flew her to the warehouse they directed me to. Virgil remained unconscious for the entire flight.” Gordon was almost thankful. “I had hoped you would be able to track us.”
It was Scott’s turn to sigh. “John was...upset.”
That snapped him out of his daze. “What?” His eyes narrowed. “What did Johnny do?”
Scott shifted where he sat. “When he lost Thunderbird Two and both your signals, he and Eos went to some lengths to find you.”
Gordon sat up straighter, eyes boring into his brother. “What did he do?”

Hello it’s been a while so here are my thoughts on VEIL OF SHADOWS
Ok I’m gonna get this out of the way:
I’m loving The Broken Code
I think it’s really well written and it’s been one of my favorite arcs
Like I’d say that the first three (or really the second and third) books of AVoS are my favorite arc, then the original series, and then TBC
Now here come the spoilers
Be warned
First of all, I honestly think that Shadowsight should’ve died in the prologue
I think it would’ve been a really interesting twist to have him as a spirit for the rest of the arc
My favorite chapters were Shadowsight’s ghost chapters (ESPECIALLY the one where he talks to the imposter)
Like having Shadowsight in the world of the dead, Bristlefrost in the land of the living, and Rootspring bridging the gap would’ve been so amazing
Alas
HarperCollins are cowards
That said, I did like Shadowsight a lot in this book
Tigerheartstar is an amazing dad even if I don’t like him that much
Shadowsight’s connection to Spiresight was sweet but Spiresight was acting a little sus tbh
Telling Shadowsight that being a ghost is better
Maybe he was just lonely but idk it seemed a little
Shady
To me
(I’m sorry)
ANYWAYS MOVING ON
We have to talk about that scene
You know the one
Okay in all seriousness, I really think that the fandom blew the suicide scene way out of proportion
Like I was expecting it to be Stemleaf or one of the Rebels jumping off a cliff or slitting their throat in defiance of Fakestar but nope
It was just Shadowsight eating some berries with no real intention of dying
Was it insentitive to people with suicidal tendencies? Yes.
Was it poorly handled? Absolutely.
But Shadowsight wasn’t actually in any danger. He was in the medicine den with Puddleshine right next to him and, as a medicine cat, he likely knew that they had a full stock of yarrow
Obviously the Erins and HarperCollins treating suicide like an easily reversible decision was incredibly disrespectful
But I’ve seen a lot of people saying that there were other ways for Shadowsight to reach the Dark Forest and I completely disagree. The Moonpool was broken and StarClan/the DF were completely cut off. No one could reach them
The only evidence we’d actually seen of them at this point were Shadowsight’s visions, and those are involuntary
Now, I don’t think that it should have been necessary at all for Shadowsight to reach the Dark Forest. I honestly think it would have been better to keep the reason that StarClan is cut off a mystery
Something to keep driving the books forward
And I think that the explanation of DF cats cutting them off by making a barrier around their connection with the living kind of ruins the lore and mystery surrounding StarClan
Well, what was left of the lore and mystery anyways
Idk how I felt about the imposter trapping Bramblestar in the DF
Like I think it would’ve been a lot cooler if he’d actually faded so much that the living couldn’t see him anymore
REGARDLESS
My point is, I don’t think Shadowsight’s attempted suicide should have been in the book at all and I don’t think that the entire DF sequence should’ve been there either
But if the DF sequence existed
Then Shadowsight’s attempted suicide would have to exist as well
Moving on
I’d like to talk about Bristlefrost (can we talk about Bristlefrost, please? I’ve been dying to talk about Bristlefrost)
Overall, I think Bristlefrost had the strongest narration in this book
I loved seeing her relationship with the Rebels AND with Fakestar
I loved seeing her spy
And I loved seeing her build a relationship with Squirrelflight
It was sad to see her Clanmates hating her, but it felt natural and completely realistic for someone in her situation
Her scenes of seeing Fakestar complaining to Alderheart about pain, seeing his weakness, and seeing him talking to a ghost (whom Bristlefrost couldn’t see) were some of my favorite scenes in the book
They drove home that the Imposter isn’t invincible and that he’s weakening
And I loved how those scenes contrasted to seeing him fight off the Rebels and actually manage to kill THREE GROWN WARRIORS on his own
He’s completely unpredictable and has unchecked power and that makes him a great villain
Seeing his paranoia (which resulted in Berrynose’s exile) was really interesting
Bristlefrost got some nice development in this book
I liked seeing her struggle as deputy and I liked that she was relieved to step down at the end
The only thing I didn’t really like about Bristlefrost in this book was that she admitted that she had feelings for Rootspring
That felt completely out of left field
Like all of her narration felt like she saw him more as a friend or even a little brother
She never really showed any interest in him romantically
So I hated that
I feel like it’s only there to drive the plot forward and sacrificing character growth for the sake of plot is not! good! writing!
It’s kind of funny though — I think that each protagonist has had their own book to shine
Like I think that Shadowsight was the best protagonist in Lost Stars, Rootspring was the best in The Silent Thaw, and Bristlefrost was the best in Veil of Shadows
Wow and those were the cats on the covers of their respective books
Hadn’t noticed that
Anyways onto Rootspring
Oh Rootspring
Out of the three protagonists, I think Rootspring has shown the most character growth
He started out as a whiny apprentice in Lost Stars and grew into a complex, likable, but still flawed character
I loved seeing his relationship with his family in this book, especially his growing acceptance of Tree (more on that when I talk about Tree’s Roots)
Seeing Rootspring’s growing friendship with Shadowsight was great
I feel like, unlike in all the other arcs, the protagonists of this arc are pretty detached from one another
Like Bristlefrost and Rootpaw are friends, and now Rootpaw is starting to become friends with Shadowsight
But Bristlefrost and Shadowsight have no relationship (I don’t think they’ve interacted even once? Correct me if I’m wrong) and that’s strange because they’re actually kin
Rootspring’s relationship with Dewspring was also nice
I liked seeing Dewspring grow to respect his apprentice
I honestly thought that Rootspring’s little stint as a medicine cat apprentice was unnecessary
I was glad that he got to choose to be a warrior in the end (unlike other forced medicine cats), but I was frustrated that those chapters could’ve been filled with something else (and probably something more interesting)
Unfortunately, I didn’t think Rootspring’s chapters were very interesting without Brambleghost
The only chapters of his that I really enjoyed were his chapters with Shadowsight (especially when he rescued Shadowsight)
Rootspring is a likable character but that didn’t make his chapters any less boring
Here are some other notes:
The battle at the end was good but it felt a little rushed (especially since Bristlefrost didn’t actually fight)
I’m pretty upset that Rosepetal died bc I really liked her and I thought she had great character potential
Every scene in the rebel camp was great
I loved seeing these cats being forced to cooperate with each other
Like Bristlefrost said, I’d love to know more about Jayfeather and Mothwing’s relationship
Seeing Lionblaze and Crowfeather begrudgingly cooperating was fun
I think the real star of this book was Squirrelflight
She was a fantastic leader in the rebel camp (despite Crowfeather also being a deputy)
The scene where Squirrelflight and Mothwing faked Squirrelflight’s death was very clever and I completely understand why Jayfeather wouldn’t want to risk severely wounding his mother
I just wish we’d actually gotten to witness the actual wounding and not just the aftermath
I don’t think it’ll happen, but I really hope we get Squirrelstar by the end of this arc
I don’t like that she chose Lionblaze as a deputy though
Not just because he’s boring, but because he’s only trained one apprentice (and that apprentice broke the Code and switched Clans), and he’s never really shown any leadership potential
He’s always been more of a follower
Also i will always adore seeing Lionblaze and Jayfeather interacting with Squirrelflight
Some other standout characters in this book (there were a lot):
Alderheart:
Seeing him standing up to the Imposter was fantastic
My boy finally grew a spine
I just wish he hadn’t left Flipclaw and ThunderClan all alone
Flipclaw:
This poor boy
He was really fucked over in this book
But it was nice to see a side character getting some development and actual characterization (especially since he’s Bristlefrost’s littermate)
Berrynose:
It was nice to see that he actually thought that Bramblestar was a good cat (just misguided)
He was a good deputy (surprisingly)
In the end, I felt bad for him
He was completely taken advantage of and taken for granted
I never liked Berrynose but I was sad about his death
The way that Tawnypelt killed him was brutal (but great), and I hope that he’s at peace with his siblings and Honeyfern in StarClan
(Even though I know he’s not)
Mothwing:
Seeing her reject Mistystar’s invitation back into RiverClan was great and it felt completely in-character for her
I’ve seen a lot of people saying that Mistystar acted OOC in this book, but I disagree
We know from Mistystar’s Omen AND from her actions in AVoS that Mistystar is a proud cat and that she has great pride in both RiverClan and StarClan
I fully believe that she’d do whatever it takes to bring StarClan back, including exiling Mothwing (a named codebreaker)
Especially given that she’s forced Mothwing to step down once before
I also think that her old age might have made her even more proud and harsh (for example, exiling Icewing and Harelight due to codebreaking and burying Dappletuft without honors)
Back to Mothwing
It was nice to see her standing up for herself (especially after reading Mothwing’s Secret) and I liked that she was willing to do what was necessary to help Squirrelflight
Sparkpelt also had a great moment in this book
As did Graystripe
Stemleaf and Spotfur were also great and I was sad to see Stemleaf go
Their friendship with Bristlefrost was really nice
I’m actually kind of excited for Spotfur’s novellas
I hope we get to see her interacting with Lionblaze more
He’s her father and they were together in the rebel camp
I hope to see more from Ivypool, Twigbranch, and Violetshine in the coming books (ESPECIALLY Ivypool)
Another standout: Leafstar
She continues to be the smartest leader
And finally
The Imposter
We all know who it is at this point
It’s Ashfur
But he was fantastic in this book
His conversation with Shadowsight was so fun to read and his last words in the book were chilling
I still think he has an accomplice but we shall see
Overall I liked this book
It had its weaknesses, but I think it’s strengths greatly outweighed them
Warriors is never gonna be perfect but the books can still be pretty damn good
And this was one of the better ones

⁚ ⁛  oh my god ! you can’t believe who i just saw. it was  kang yuna !  they really resemble  seo soojin , don’t they ?  i heard they started their career about  one year ago  as the  main dancer + lead rapper + vocalist  in  v-nyx , but it sure seems longer, doesn’t it ?  they always seem so  optimistic ,  elegant  +  selfless  in interviews and to their fans, but their latest scandal made them sound like  timid ,  sensitive  + cautious … oh well, must’ve been the bad lighting. did you know they came all the way from  seoul ,  south korea  to new york city ?  it was really brave of them to sacrifice so much. you think they’re survive the spotlight ? 「+ seo soojin 」
god so i’m sleep deprived and idk what i’m abt to write so let’s see how many tws i can avoid adding. apparently , sleep deprived me is good at avoiding tws so that’s cool.
 —   𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒐.
on march 9th, 1998, kang yuna was born and raised in seongbuk-dong, seoul.
if the neighborhood wasn’t enough to tip one off, the kangs were well-off; her father having been the ceo of the family business in and around medical equipment while her mother was off signing paperbacks for her avid readers.
— quite a happy  little  family, which she pointed out time and time again to her parents soon after she learned how to walk and talk. and sing and dance, as they soon realized.
and who were they to ignore their precious little girl’s requests ?
(  ... ok, so they already planned on having another child but it made her much happier to think that she convinced her parents for a sibling  )
but by the time she was on her way to english preschool, she doted on her younger sister; it seemed endearing to those outside of the household, but beyond the surface, was an unfortunate side effect of two hard-working people that were too busy to come home and have dinner with their children.
only when she turned nine did she realize  why  she saw less and less of her parents.
as it turned out, her mother had an affair with one of her publishers and she’d taken advantage of yuna’s pleas for a sibling as a cover around the time.
her father found out, over the years, due to how much their youngest  didn’t  look like him — and more like that one publisher.
long story short, the teen lost her mother and sister as she got back home from school, leaving bare rooms and sour memories, their belongings all gone.
the news was publicized almost immediately and she and her father had to deal with the aftermath. bright flashes, handheld mics, and condescending tones became their norm for a little while.
from then, she saw her father even less... those early morning flights, late night meetings, or long business lunches really holding him captive. other than the times he’d try to show her the ropes of running the company, she saw the man maybe twice a week if she was lucky.
she quickly learned how to take care of herself without the help of their staff.
doing a lot of the house chores by her lonesome, it offered her some peace of mind. for whatever reason, her father took that as a sign that she was preparing to be a housewife.
arranged to be engaged to a business partner’s son by the age of sixteen, yuna tried her hardest to get out of it.
the most rebellious and impulsive thing she did was sneaking out to go to an open audition after being cast by a company scout at a talent show.
her father refused to let her become a trainee for two years, for obvious reasons, but yuna was adamant and in the end, he let her go.
(  suddeN i know i’m sorry i didn’t know how to get here without taking another 3pg essay to explain as;dlkf  )
she trained hard as a main dancer for a couple of years before she found her girls.
though she was very shy in meeting and training with them, she immediately found a safe place in their group. in their little family.
tbc.
    —   𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚.
vvvvvv timid, even though she was raised to be a businesswoman
performing on the stage and in front of the cameras is a bit of a different story
but incredibly shy
will try to get a smile on your face, nonetheless
wears her heart on her sleeve tbh, she can’t tell a lie without her eyes getting glassy
the Mom Friend™
she’s used to taking care of the others honestly
no matter how much of a mess they make
probs cuts up apples and orange and peels grapes for snacks
and makes sure they eat something for breakfast
also packs the girls’ lunches when they have indv schedules
a pure bean

Well, I figure I had better introduce myself by retelling the story of the first time I told somebody about my thing for tickling, and the aftermath of it.
It was the summer after my 2nd year in college. A girl who I had known in high school and throughout my childhood had asked me to meet up with her to catch up from both of our years away at school.  I always suspected she was interested in me, but she never voiced that. The spot was an outdoor coffee place, and on this particular day, nobody was around, likely because of the heat. Like I said, this girl and I had known each other for quite some time, so our conversation started naturally enough. It was the end of summer, and the only time we had seen each other prior was 2 months ago when we both went swimming and weren’t so much focused on updating each other with our lives but enjoying each other’s company.
We began by asking each other how classes were, what we were most looking forward to going back to school, and the like. While she was always somebody who stood out in classes, I didn’t realize that she still had a 4.0 after 4 semesters as a biology major.
When we had talked for about an hour and finished our food and drink, she asked if I wanted to get out of the heat but keep talking in her car, and I obliged. Instead of just running the AC, she decided to drive around. At some point, the talk turned to relationships.
“So, were you seeing anyone in school?”
“For a little bit,” I fibbed. I didn’t want to admit that it had been quite a while since I had dated someone.
She didn’t push the issue, but shyly mentioned that she had as well.
“What was he like?” I asked.
“Oh my gosh, he was so good looking!” The fact that this was the first thing she mentioned suggested to me that she hadn’t been so fond of the guy.
“Yeah, but like what did you guys like to do?” I probed. Her white cheeks blushed dark red immediately as her smile widened a quarter-inch.
“To be honest, he just liked to have sex,” she practically whispered after a prolonged pause. She did her very best to avoid even the slightest catch of my now wide-with-surprise eyes.
“Oh,” I said surprisingly.
“Well not even that,” she shyly continued, “we never even went that far.”
“What about you and your person?” She asked, eager to put the spotlight back on me. This is where I got a mischievous idea. “We never did either,” I said.
“Well how far did you go?” she continued.
I stammered through the next bit, embarrassed myself about the story I was weaving. “Uhh, third base. She was always too satisfied to keep going further.”
Before I got a chance to explain, she surprised me like I’ve never been surprise before. “I still haven’t even had an orgasm.” She confided. “What? You’re 20 years old, how could he not make you?” I asked, ignoring my better instincts.
Finally, she met my eyes, if only at a glance. “Not just him, anyone… I can’t even do it by myself.” At this point, she was shining red from embarrassment, but it almost seemed like sharing such personal information was making her excited. “Wow.” I said, not knowing what else to say.
Silence loomed in the air for a minute or two. She broke the silence by saying, “what did you do to…you know… make her?” I could tell she was very uncomfortable asking, but also really curious about my sexual exploits. I thought of trying to laugh it off and give a generic answer, but she kept talking. “You can tell me, we can be like each other’s secret diary on all things usually off-limits.”
I couldn’t believe I was going to say this, so I put the emphasis on my fake partner. “Haha, okay, but I better not be the only one sharing!” I said. “Okay, well, actually she was into some, like, really weird stuff, but she, uh, she realllly enjoyed herself.”
“Well, what kind of weird stuff?” She asked. “Uhh, you know, just like, weird stuff.” I said, not even having to fake my shyness and hesitancy. “You’re gonna have to spell it out for me” she laughed. I couldn’t believe that she was forcing me to put it into words.
“Uhm, well, she really liked when I…tickled her.” I admitted falsely.
“Tickling!” She exclaimed as she turned to finally look me in the eye. “Oh my gosh, I could never even imagine.” Now I was the one refusing to meet her stare.
“Like, how?” she inquired. “Well, uhm, she loved when, like, if we were cuddling, and I had my arms around her, if I would like tickle her belly. She would get wet just from me slowly tickling her and not letting her go when she squirmed and giggled. By the time I started playing with her, she was already drenched.”
“Oh, wow, I could never even imagine.” She said, shifting uncomfortably in her seat. Something about the way she said this made me think that she could more than imagine the scenario.
My suspicion was confirmed when she again broke the silence. “Was that it, or did you do other things with it?” It was clear I had caught her interest, even if she was trying to downplay it.“I guess I’m more of a fuzzy handcuffs girl myself” she continued super shyly before I had a chance to answer.
“Well yeah, actually that was part of it!” I said, estatic with my luck.
“No way, how?”
TBC….. if I get enough interest

**
Things settled down fairly quickly in the aftermath of the final battle.  Most people in town seemed appalled by their own actions, while others retreated into denial, pretending nothing had happened.
Still, some good was coming from the new normal.
Derek, Braden and Cora decided to stay in Beacon Hills and, given the gutting of his department, Sheriff Stilinski offered them jobs.  Braeden, already happy with her job, turned him down, but the Hales accepted.  Chris Argent agreed to a part time position with the department as well.  Stiles had advocated for a job of his own, but his father wanted him to return to Quantico to finish training there.
Agent McCall put the kibosh on that idea.  Apparently, the training co-ordinators were not pleased with Stiles’s mysterious mid-raid disappearing act.  Though Derek’s name had since been cleared, Stiles was no longer welcome in the program.
The French Hunters dispersed quickly, though Isaac and Danny remained., as did Jackson and Ethan.
The McCall pack was bigger than Liam had ever seen, not that this was a bad thing.
At home, Liam’s parents were a little surprised by the sudden appearance of Theo, but they rolled with it when they found out he didn’t have anywhere else to go.  Plus, he was a really good houseguest.  He helped with the dishes, kept his room clean and was quiet and respectful.
Basically, Liam’s folks adored him.
Liam liked having Theo around too…maybe more than he would like to admit.  The Chimera was smart, funny, a worthy video game opponent…but wow, was he ever distracting.
The first night Liam brought Theo home, he’d almost been amused by how happy the other boy was to take a hot shower.  The Chimera spent a good 30 minutes in the bathroom and when he finally finished, Liam was waiting to tease him, but the comment died on his lips.
Steam billows out of the bathroom as Theo emerged, damp chest glistening, wet hair tousled.  He wore a towel sling low around his hips and Liam choked a bit, eyes darting from the heat flushed cheeks, down to a droplet of water rolling along the curve of one pec, down solid abs until it was finally absorbed in the towel…right near the cut V of his pelvis.
Liam stared long and hard before shaking himself and practically leaping to his feet, muttering about food.
Every day since, he’d managed to bump into Theo in a similar state of undress and Liam’s nerves were starting to fray.  He wondered if anyone noticed, but he thought he was keeping s kid on things pretty well.  After all, as a teenage boy, he was used to unexpected, unexplainable trips to bonerville.
The softer moments though, those were what Liam knew would be his undoing.  Seeing Theo sitting on his bed, reading, quiet and content.  The soft brush of Theo’s hair against his hand.  Hearing Theo singing along to some silly song on the radio with Liam’s mom while he helped her with dinner…Each little moment made Liam smile and his heart skip.
Nights were harder though.
At night, he often heard soft whimpers and cries from Theo’s room and he couldn’t help but investigate.  The other boy seemed to know he was there and quieted, comforted by Liam’s presence.
Tonight, the nightmares seemed to be worse than usual.  Without thinking, Liam stroked Theo’s fluffy hair back from his face and the other boy immediately jerked away, skittering back, curling against the wall and hugging his knees to his chest, eyes panicked.
“Hey, it’s just me,” Liam said, not wanting to further spook Theo.
Slowly, the older boy relaxed, still tee and curled in on himself.  “Sorry, I….”
“Had a nightmare,” Liam concluded, settling down on the bed.  “C’mon.  You’ll sleep better if you’re not alone.”
That was how they ended up sleeping together on a fairly regular basis.  Among the pack, a few eyebrows were raised and it was Jackson who pointed out, “You two are all over each other, scent wise.”
Liam was pretty sure it was Lydia who smuggled pamphlets about safe sex into his back pack…or maybe Ms. McCall.
The pamphlets going into detail about how 2 guys have sex, those could only have come from Stiles.  His giggles were a sure give away in retrospect and Liam wished he’d had the forethought to check his bag as they left the pack meeting.
Instead, he’d just dumped his bag out onto the bed during a search for a pen.  Theo was in the room of course to see the pamphlets that landed atop the pile of books, all bold text and bright, non-threatening drawings.
‘Why Lube is your new best friend!’
‘So you want to find your prostate (or someone else’s)!’
‘The ins and outs of going in an out!’
Wide eyed, Liam snatched up the damn pamphlets, going red in the face.  “Damn it, Stiles!” he muttered, trying to shove them in a drawer, out of sight.  “I swear, I’m gonna start putting a padlock on my bag….”
His voice trailed off when he saw Theo’s face, a moment before the other boy began to laugh.
“Oh, it’s good to know I’m not the only one,” Theo wheezed, opening his bag and displaying an array of pamphlets.  One in particular made Liam gulp.
‘Bottoming for Beginners!’
Licking his lips, Liam cast a look at Theo and asked, “You don’t seem freaked out that they think…you know….”
“I’m not,” Theo replied, stepping closer.  “Are you?”
“No!” Liam almost yelped, then took a breath, steadying himself.  “No, I just wish…they wouldn’t try to be helpful.  It’s kind of horrifying.”
The slow smile that crept across Theo’s face made Liam’s stomach flip in a very pleasant way.  “Oh, I don’t know…I read some of the literature.  It was far less traumatic than when I Googled ‘How to have gay sex’.”
Liam’s eyes grew wide at the idea of Theo looking into that on Google.  “Oh my God!” he exclaimed, unable to hold back his laughter.  “I…I bet that was….”
“So much porn,” Theo agreed solemnly before his composure broke and his laughter joined Liam’s.  “So much truly disturbing porn.”
For several minutes, all they could do was laugh, nearly doubled over, clinging to each other in order to keep upright. Each time Liam felt like he was getting a hold of himself, he would meet Theo’s gaze and think of what kind of results that Google search had produced…and he would lose it again.
“Oh man,” Theo wheezed, head falling forward to rest on Liam’s shoulder.  His hair brushed Liam’s neck, achingly soft and smelling of Liam’s own shampoo.  The contact sent shivers through Liam, sobering him and her brought up a hand, cupping the back of Theo’s neck, thumb brushing along the other boy’s jaw.
In a matter of moments both boys quieted, the only sounds in the room their quiet breathing.  Theo raised his head, looking searching into Liam’s eyes.  He was so close, the skin under Liam’s fingers so warm and vital….
Later, neither could say who moved first, their lips coming together in a surprisingly tender kiss.  Liam’s fingers slid up, burying themselves in Theo’s hair as the taller boy’s hands fell to Liam’s hips, one wrapping around to press at the small of his back, pulling him closer.
As far as first kisses went, it was pretty epic…or would have been, had Liam’s mom not interrupted them, shouting up the stairs to let them know dinner was ready.
Still, it was a hell of a kiss…and held the promise of far more to come.
TBC…….maybe?  IDK, is this a good place to end it?

Can four pictures really sum up my week? Well, if I’m being honest they come pretty close. Reading, paperwork, sunny skies and traffic jams. That’s what I’ve been up to. The sunny skies makes a nice change. Well … not a change exactly, it’s becoming quite repetitive now, but hey – we mustn’t complain.
So how has your week been? Good? Good. I had a pretty awesome one by all accounts. Monday, despite being at work (boo hiss) I had a pretty fabulous day as I was Netgalley approved for one of THE books I have been most anticipating all year, the first in James Oswald’s brand new Constance Fairchild series, No Time To Cry. Now I was in Dublin training on Monday so I started reading it in my lunch break. Carried on reading it in the airport where I was only disturbed by a small false fire alarm, boarding the plane and driving home. I know! Annoying right? Carried on reading when I got home, finished around two a.am. I am completely gutted now as reading it so quickly means I have ages to wait for the next book in either series but by ‘eck. It was good. Sooooooo good. This was my only Netgalley this week, but that’s no bad thing lol. And as I arrived home to a signed copy of The Reckoning by Yrsa Sigurdardottir courtesy of Goldsboro Books too, the day was pretty good all in all.
Tuesday was a work day (boo hiss) but I crammed in some reading in the evening, even though I was absolutely shattered from my early morning book binge. Wednesday was a little more exciting as I drove down to London for an early morning (six a.m.) appointment the following day, Whilst there it felt only polite to head along to the London launch for Louise Voss’ The Old You and Doug Johnstone’s Fault Lines. The sacrifices one makes for blogging huh?
A fabulous evening in the gallery of Collyer Bristow on Beford Row in some wonderful company. So nice to catch up with old friends, Vicki Goldman, Joy Kluver, Jacob Collins, Anne Cater, Karen Cole, Mary Picken, Barry Forshaw and Marina Sofia. I met Daniel Pembrey who is lovely, and of course it was a chance to say hi to the lovely Karen Sullivan again and also the effervescent Meggy who was in her element and perhaps more than a little high on chocolate cake ;), One of the biggest surprises of the night was seeing Thomas Enger there – totally not expecting that but just shows what a fab team the Orenda guys are as he flew in all the way from Norway to give his support to the launch.
Book wise I picked up a signed copy of Fault Lines (I already had The Old You from earlier in the year at the Orenda Roadshow in Warwick) and an arc of Good Samaritans by Will Carver, an arc I have been rather jealous of having seen arriving with all my blogging compadres.
Driving home from Tottenham on Thursday was pure hell. Hell I tell you! Left at three and, with a series of delays, accidents and general nonsense to contend with, plus a very late breakfast stop at four thirty p.m., I finally arrived home just before eight. You’d think I’d be unhappy about that right? Well normally I would be but I managed to finish an audio book and then, when you arrive home to a massive parcel with your TBC auction wins in it, well you can’t stay in a bad mood for long can you? Such a wonderful sight to see.
What was in it? Well … Random, Snapshot, Cold Grave, Witness The Dead, In Place of Death, Murderabilia and The Photographer by Craig Robertson and The Unseen, The Price, The Harrowing and The Book of Shadows by Alexandra Sokoloff. Oh, plus some Ferrero Rocher and a Bloody Scotland t-shirt. Tidy.
Friday it was back to work and some rather dull but essential meetings and a lot more spreadsheet work. You’d think I’d be flagging by this point, and normally you’d be right, but an email from the lovely Karen Sullivan put a big smile on my face and not even talking coffee pods, cost centre reports or proof of delivery capture could get me down. More on that later in the week 😉
Saturday and Sunday … well a little walking and more reading plus a whole lot of review writing. I’m a little behind. Unlike my actual behind which is currently anything other than little hence my need for all the walking, even in this heat… saw some cygnets down a the local canal basin though so that was nice. And the books I have been reading are awesome which is also nice 🙂
Book purchase wise I was quite good really. For me. No new audible, just the one Netgalley above and only three book purchased, two pre-orders and one free short story. They were The Night She Died by Jenny Blackhurst; Death’s Door by Paul Finch and No Further Questions by Gillian McAllister.
Books I have read
No Time To Cry – James Oswald
Undercover ops are always dangerous, but DC Constance Fairchild never expected things to go this wrong.
Returning to their base of operations, an anonymous office in a shabby neighbourhood, she finds the bloodied body of her boss, and friend, DI Pete Copperthwaite. He’s been executed – a single shot to the head.
In the aftermath, it seems someone in the Met is determined to make sure that blame for the wrecked operation falls squarely on Con’s shoulders. She is cut loose and cast out, angry and alone with her grief… right until the moment someone also tries to put a bullet through her head.
There’s no place to hide, and no time to cry.
Oh my life how I loved this book. Constance ‘Con’ Fairchild is a brilliant new protagonist who I am looking forward to getting to know. Very different in tone and style from the Inspector McLean series, it still bears James Oswald’s natural style of a twisted and complex story, with just a hint of something … supernatural, captivating characters and feisty determination. He may give his leads a very privileged start in life but he never quite lets them get comfortable. Loved it. And if you’ve not read any books by Mr Oswald yet, this is a great place to start. I’ll be reviewing later in the year, may do a taster review later in the month (ebook publication is late July) and you can preorder your own copy here. Do it. you know you want to.
The Killing Habit – Mark Billingham
How do you catch a killer who is yet to kill? We all know the signs. Cruelty, lack of empathy, the killing of animals. Now, pets on suburban London streets are being stalked by a shadow, and it could just be the start.
DI Tom Thorne knows the psychological profile of such offenders all too well, so when he is tasked with catching a notorious killer of domestic cats, he sees the chance to stop a series of homicides before they happen.
Others are less convinced, so once more, Thorne relies on DI Nicola Tanner to help him solve the case, before the culprit starts hunting people. It’s a journey that brings them face to face with a killer who will tear their lives apart.
Mark Billingham has a real knack for taking real life cases and spinning them into an occasionally gruesome, always compelling, what if kind of scenario. The book starts in an almost surreal way with Thorne tasked with capturing a cat killer of all people, and ends in a way no-one could have foreseen, Gripping, action laden and with the wonderful pairing of Thorne with his exact opposite, Nicola Tanner once more, this is irresistably good. I’ll be reviewing soon but you can get your own copy here.
A Patient Fury – Sarah Ward
When Detective Constable Connie Childs is dragged from her bed to the fire-wrecked property on Cross Farm Lane she knows as she steps from the car that this house contains death.
Three bodies discovered – a family obliterated – their deaths all seem to point to one conclusion: One mother, one murderer.
But D.C. Childs, determined as ever to discover the truth behind the tragedy, realises it is the fourth body – the one they cannot find – that holds the key to the mystery at Cross Farm Lane.
What Connie Childs fails to spot is that her determination to unmask the real murderer might cost her more than her health – this time she could lose the thing she cares about most: her career.
This was my first Connie Childs book, although I have the others on my kindle waiting patiently. I know I’veprobably missed quite a bit in Connie’s first outings but I have to say i really liked her, a determined officer, stubborn even, who is not willing to let things go just because she is ordered to do so and who has great instincts which she knows to trust. A harrowing case involving the death of a child puts the whole team on edge. Clever plotting, excellent writing and a guarantee I’ll be back for more. I\ll be reviewing as part of the tour later in the month but you can buy a copy here.
Dancing on the Grave – Zoe Sharp
In one of the most beautiful corners of England, Something very ugly is about to take place…
A sniper with a mission… a young cop with nothing to lose… a CSI with everything to prove… a teenage girl with a terrifying obsession…
There’s a killer on the loose in the Lake District, and the calm of an English summer is shattered.
For newly qualified crime-scene investigator, Grace McColl, it’s both the start of a nightmare and the chance to prove herself after a mistake that cost a life.
For Detective Constable Nick Weston, recently transferred from London, it’s an opportunity to recover his nerve after a disastrous undercover operation that left him for dead.
And for a lonely, loveless teenage girl, Edith, it’s the start of a twisted fantasy—one she never dreamed might come true.
A standalone CSI led thriller this involves a high profile murder, a killer on the loose with a very unstable young woman at his side. High tension, high action and with brilliantly drawn characters this is another top class read from author Zoe Sharp and highly recommended. I’ll be reviewing on the tour later in the month but do yourself a favour and bag a copy here.
Four books – not too shabby all things considered. It’s been a busy week. Less so on the blog but I am meant to be slowing down…
The Note by Andrew Barrett
A Meditation on Murder by Robert Thorogood
Death on Dartmoor by Bernie Steadman
After He’s Gone by Jane Isaac
Guest Post: Robert Dugoni – Author of A Steep Price
The week ahead is pretty full on. I’ve a few blog tours starting tomorrow with The Death of Mrs Westaway by Rith Ware and A Summer Scandal by Kat French; How Far We Fall by Jane Shemilt and Gone To Ground by Rachel Amphlett.
I’ll also be taking part in an exclusive cover reveal on Wednesday so do stop by. I promise you that you really want to see this. Love it.
My week will otherwise be made up of work, reading, reviewing and – wait for it – actual writing. Yes, you read that right. No more messing about. I will be writing. Eek. No pressure.
Have a fabulous and hopefully sunny and book filled week all. See you on the other side.
Jen

SaL anon here bestie *deep sigh*. I take back my comment yesterday about wanting promo person who chooses the final clip fired, if anything they are the only one on the promo team waving red flags at viewers and shouting "This shit is what you'll actually be watching!!!". I'm not saying there wasn't good stuff last night but it's sadly overshadowed , in many ways by all the BS. Eddie's breakdown was incredible (thank you Ryan Guzman) but we should have had sooo much more of it instead of it TBC
being awkwardly shoved in (and probably some beautiful scenes cut) at the end. Loved all the reunions, hated that they seemed like an afterthought and were barely given time to happen while entire conversations we should have seen were just mentioned. And then there is Buck's entire storyline which I 1000% hate. They were actually going to have BL flirting on the job while BT was still happening before the backlash??!! Who the actually fuck thought THAT was a good idea? Also if that is the "toned down" Lucy content we're going to be getting it's going to be a long 6 episodes, really don't need to watch another show where they shove a behated character who is just the bestest thing to ever happen to everyone ever down my throat at every turn. Anyway, sorry this is just bitter and salty, I'll find us a song to honor Eddie's meltdown soon, after I've had a day or two to get over it. Hope your hanging in there better than I am!!
Oh bestie I am....not doing well 🙃🙃🙃 I'm just....GOD I'm so fucking baffled at what we are watching right now. The reunion stuff I kinda got, it was a quick way to show Maddie and Chim connecting with their loved ones while also getting the scoop (and reminding the audience since it's been nearly a month since 5x11) of everything they missed. And I'm glad Buck and Maddie were just happy to see each other and they DID have some good talks but...I don't know it just felt like something was still missing in all of that. She left for six months and yeah Buck got some updates but they haven't really talked and maybe I thought it would be more emotional? I don't know. I did notice Chim saying things with Buck were fine but Buck clearly doesn't think so, so despite what KR said, I'm going to hold a tiny sliver of hope that we might get a little talk between them or a hug-it-out moment.
But not getting to see the Eddie/Bobby apology, especially after what Eddie said? That one frustrates me a lot. And we might get an even better reconciliation scene later (I'm thinking maybe May Day) but if they have plans to do a big reconciliation scene later, then we don't need to be told and not shown now that Eddie apologized, but it just feels like big things are missing. Same with the Madney breakup happening off screen! We had "I got out of the ocean for you" and then they decide to just totally call it quits off screen?! After Chim sat in front of that hospital for months waiting for her and refused to go home without her?! Again, I get that they needed time and I'm not worried about them getting a good reconciliation, but we could have had another "we just need a minute" moment where they decide that they still need space and to adjust to being back in LA for now, and they will work on the rest as it comes instead of a full "we're just too different now" breakup coming out of nowhere, on the heels of such a beautiful episode for them!
As for the Eddie breakdown, yes we got a LOT of good stuff out of that, but it absolutely should have been longer. I hate that my fear about the Eddie breakdown was true which is that they would show Buck getting there and seeing Eddie, and then cut to him being calmed down and talking to Buck. And I know we are going to get more of the aftermath in the next episode(s) but it was so weird the way it looks like they cut it off in the middle of the scene?! What was that? We had time for a billion scenes with girlboss and firebarbie but not for the actual main character that we want to see?? Oliver, Gavin, and especially Ryan were phenomenal and I wanted more! We could have actually seen Eddie in the room breaking stuff! We could have seen Buck comforting him, or even seen him pulling back because he doesn't believe he deserves comfort right now, and telling Buck he's okay and to go check on Chris and give him a minute. I was so hoping we would get enough material to excite us and have a good song choice but I'm left feeling a bit deflated at the moment. The scene was amazing, and what we got delivered, but the emotional weight it could have had is constantly undercut by all the other nonsense going on. WHY is KR so allergic to letting the main characters BE main characters?! We spent so much time on the set up for the spider call than on Eddie breaking down?! Whyyyy?!?!?!
As for girlboss and firebarbie I just....HOW IN THE FUCK did we get both a season 2 m*ria AND a season 3 m*ria at the same time?! And it's going to drag out for the rest of the goddamn season?!?! Hard fucking pass. What was even the point of that talk with Maddie and Buck admitting he did a dumb thing, a thing he wouldn't have done had he been given the slightest indication that he could have Maddie there instead, and admitting he was clinging for the wrong reasons, only for it to lead nowhere?! For him to double fucking down and say no he wants her there and wants to make it work?! How can they keep dragging down one of their best and purest cinnamon roll characters into this mess that no one wants to see?! Also, tay "the truth is everything" kay suddenly doesn't care about cheating or if Buck tells her or not?! Although considering she only has him around because she likes having someone to boss around (the couch scene was SO gross) who she knows won't leave because he has abandonment issues (sound familiar? Hello season 2 m*ria it's not nice to see you again), it shouldn't be too surprising. And as for L...what is the fucking point?! Every single thing she did on that call? That was Buck's job on the calls, to be the one with the out-of-the-box thinking and random knowledge. And instead, he's now reduced to fumbling around in the background so she can be Super Cool And Take Charge. Again, why is KR allergic to letting the characters do the things we fell in love with them doing?! We could be seeing Buck doing what he does best after spending SO much of his time this whole season languishing away in that loft with his dead relationship that they refuse to put in the ground and instead keep dressing up the corpse like we can't all smell that it's rotten. L is so utterly superfluous, and her taking shots at CHIM of all people?! What the fuck? (again, familiar? Season 3 m*ria making her appearance being useless and putting other people down for no reason. For real it is ON SIGHT for her making snide remarks about Howard fucking Han, the heart of the 118. She needs to GTFO)
I said 5x13 would give us an idea of how much we were going to have to see her and in what capacity compared to them cutting her out of the promo, and I guess we have our answer. And they might have shifted the narrative after the backlash to her and Buck having "sweet" moments together where they learn from each other (but I thought she already knew everything?) and trying to play it off as a friendship now, but a) they already kissed, it's going to taint every single future interaction for the audience even if they brush it off in the show, and b) if it's not important then why the fuck did it need to happen in the first place when Buck already has a million reasons he's unhappy with his gf? Either they teased it as something it wasn't ever meant to be and put in the kiss for "shock value" (because watching a fan favorite cheat and lie is so much fun 🙄) or they are focusing on the angles that make it look like more of a friendship maybe? but they clearly aren't cutting her screen time down, and her and tay kay are definitely going to meet which just makes me feel sick. No matter if L ends up only being a "friend" all here scenes with Buck will still be gross because of that kiss, and more importantly she is not needed. It's not enjoyable to watch her take scenes from other characters like Buck who we desperately want to see back to doing those things like he used to instead of just being mired in this triangle drama.
Sorry, this got long and ranty but I'm trying to get the bad feelings out so I can enjoy the good stuff. Some people are rant first, enjoy after, some are enjoy first, rant after and I'm just a metronome swinging wildly between elation and despair. BUT if you have a song, bestie I will have an answer and we can get through this together! We survived RNM, THAT episode and seasons 2 and 3 m*ria, we can survive this too!
