hahaha meet the nerd (affectionate) but also nerd (derogatory)
I know it’s been three weeks, I’m sorry. Kind of. Not really.
Name – Okazaki Risa (岡崎 梨紗) (the kanji in her last name mean “hill”, “peninsula”, and the kanji in her first name mean “pear”, “silk gauze”)
Age - 16
Gender – Female

Occupation – High school student (first year)
Personality - She’s a bit childish, asking for foods like hot dogs and spaghetti. Although she clearly expects luxury conditions, she’s surprisingly accepting of the fact that she’s not allowed them, and is adapting very well to it.
She has a habit of tugging her own braids whenever she feels like she’s made a mistake. In fact, she’s quite anxious in general, but regarding her crime, she has a very strong conviction that she did the right thing.
She’s rather lighthearted about the whole “prisoner” deal, and doesn’t think that anyone will actually get hurt or that she’s in any danger. Her concerns are more with the others liking or not liking her than anything else.

MV – Dollhouse
Her background music would have a music box-like feel, with several short loops, as well as a bit of guitar. The lyrics are all about listening and being obedient.
The MV starts with Risa playing with dolls: a typical Barbie that’s smaller than the other two, a ragdoll, and something that looks more like an action figure.
It’s intercut with scenes of her singing inside a dollhouse, which has more spring-like colours than the rest of the MV, which is in autumn shades.
She has a tea party with the dolls, but accidentally spills something orange in front of the ragdoll. She then knocks over the action figure, right on top of the ragdoll. She picks up the Barbie and walks away.
She plays cashier with the Barbie, where the ragdoll is one of the items to be checked out.
She uses a toy hairbrush to brush her own hair and braid it, until something falls to the floor behind her, and she turns around hurriedly, leaving the Barbie behind. The lights in the room are still warm and yellow, but the window behind her is light blue, and it’s snowing heavily.
The background music begins to get faster and faster, and the lyrics get more forceful. She begins tossing various doll clothes and toys to the side, where they land around the now-empty dollhouse set.
Risa walks through a set of fancy hallways, until she spots the ragdoll and action figure on an end table. She tosses the ragdoll aside, but knocks over the action figure in the process. The background music glitches out. She then looks around nervously and puts the figure back up.
Risa throws the dollhouse down a set of stairs, and it breaks apart in a dark place that looks like a basement. The guitar music disappears. She clutches her empty hands together.
Trivia
Fuyushi and Risa have the theme “influence.”
Murder is her only crime, and she only has one victim.

My BIL pulled out a gun after family dinner but I’m the one exiled from my sister and her unborn baby’s lives.
Forewarning - a bit of a long read
TW- gun violence
The day before my little sister’s (22) baby shower the family gathered for pizza and beer at my grandfathers homestead, where myself (28), husband (31), & my father temporary reside, as my grandfather just lost his wife of 60 years and is struggling with being alone and the upkeep of the homestead. My sister also begged me to leave my travel job where I was a few states away and to come back home to help with her being pregnant and the baby, as she didn’t have a relationship anymore with our mother. The second ex-wife of my father & her daughter (15) were also there from out of town as they had asked to stay with my grandfather for the baby shower weekend as they couldn’t afford a hotel.
My brother-in-law (21) arrived late to the “party” finishing off a 24 oz Twisted Tea as he walked thru the door. He was already clearly buzzed & continued to drink but none of us were concerned as his pregnant sober wife could just drive him home.
My husband went to get pizza for us, as well as my brother-in-law, & dad’s ex-wife’s daughter went along for the ride too. Once they got back my husband immediately pulled me aside and told me that BIL & the daughter were flirting intensely the whole ride, including words, touching, daughter taking his clothing items and refusing to give back, etc. to the point where my husband told them to knock it off multiple times (anyone who knows my husband, knows he’s a EXTREMELY tolerant man, but holds his morals high, especially when it comes to infidelity & family). & then BIL proceeded to give the daughter (15) a Twisted Tea to which my husband objected & the daughter proceeds to chug the whole thing before he can take it, as he’s the one who’s driving. After being informed by my husband of this I asked if I should tell my sister now and he said no just wait until the week when you can talk to her one on one and the ex-wife & daughter will be back in their home state hours away.
We proceed with dinner & BIL & the daughter kept leaving the shop where we all were, to go outside in the 30 degree weather in no coats for 5-10 mins at a time, each time coming back more clumsy, giggly, and just plain “up to no good” written all over their faces. I was suspicious of their behavior which made it awkward so I called it a night first and my husband followed suit shortly after.
& that’s when it all happened…
We were both laying in bed watching tv, just sparked a joint, and I hear a truck start up, nbd I figured it was my sister and BIL leaving. I could hear the vehicle getting closer and closer to our camper we stay in on the property, which with the U driveway there wouldn’t be a reason for anyone to drive close to us. Wondering what was up I opened the blinds and begin watching the truck out the window, just in time to watch it smash into the front brush guard on our new 3500 & then back up. I yell to my husband “omg they just hit our truck!!!” and run out the door in my pjs. My husband follows suit, him only in his boxers.
I get out there and I find the daughter and BIL standing in front of my truck staring at it, with the other truck still on, headlights pointing directly at the damage. I asked “what the f*** happened” and BIL said “idk”, to which I replied “I just watched you hit my truck!” BIL: “No I didn’t!!!” Me: “I watched someone hit my truck thru the window! Who was it!?!” At this point I’m yelling because they’re not giving me answers. I specially ask each of them if they hit it & both blankly stare. I continue to ask/yell what happened and BIL begins yelling at me to “calm down” and “stfu” and walks closer and gets right in my face continuing to scream. At this point my husband steps up and states “you don’t talk to my wife like that” and then grabs him by the hoodie. BIL continues to yell into my husbands face to which my husband continued to restrain him and put him on the ground. My husband continued to ask him what happened to the truck, BIL continued not to answer and only talked more s*** to which my husband slapped him across the face & told him to calm down. After this he seemed to have calmed and my husband let him up. After he was up, BIL started to run his mouth again as my dad was walking up to the situation. Husband and dad were telling him to go home and got about 20 feet away from the trucks when BIL suddenly reaches into his front left waistband, pulls out his grandfathers old pistol, points it directly at my husband with my father standing to the right of my husband and myself standing to his left. My dad told him “put that f****** thing away” followed by my husband “ya better know how to use it”. He then puts it behind him in his waistband and we’re all screaming at him to leave. My sister finally comes out from the sidelines watching it all happen (which I understand to a point because she is pregnant) and gets in her vehicle & leaves, then BIL peels out in the driveway & leaves in his own vehicle.
We didn’t call the cops because we don’t like to get police involved especially in family matters as one bad night can ruin a young kids life, especially the father of the future first grand baby to the family, but now I’m wondering if we should have.
Once it was said and done, the daughter finally admitted to her mom she was the one driving but didn’t admit to drinking although you could visibly see she was tipsy at the least. Her moms truck was much more damaged than mine. Dad, husband, and I weren’t upset about the truck being hit, more so that they lied, acted shady, got in my face aggressively, and then after everything was done proceeded to brandish his pistol.
Thankfully my grandfather was inside the house and didn’t have his hearing aids in so he didn’t hear a thing.
The baby shower was the most awkward and terrible one I feel I’ll ever attend. As my sister didn’t talk to me and barely talked to my father, like we were the ones who did something wrong. Literally no one apologized for anything that happened that night except for my husband & I the night of for our parts played in the scenario. The mother or daughter never apologized for her actions and the damage to our vehicle and the mother even refused to give me her insurance information so I could file a claim.
Monday I messaged my sister asking to get the items back that I leant her for the party and for her to leave them outside in her barn where most of them were anyways so I could grab them the next morning while everyone was at work (I’m a housewife now). I then receive a three page message, formatted to mimick a legal document with full names, addresses, and times; stating I will only be allowed on their property two nights this week between the hours of 6:30-8:30 pm, when they are both home. She also specifically states that no firearms are allowed to be brought on her property during these visits to which I have to comply. She also states that if my husband steps foot on her property they will call the cops for trespassing.
So that leaves me with the option of going without my protection weapon, to the house of someone who pulled a weapon on me days before while intoxicated, with a good chance of him being intoxicated again while I’m there. Awesome.
Reading the last part of her message completely broke my heart. She wrote that after I receive my stuff I will have 0 contact with my sister and her soon-to—be born baby indefinitely.
The BIL has since only allowed my sister to talk to my father when he his home, assuming so he can hear and control the conversation, which my father denied until he can talk to her while she’s alone. This behavior isn’t abnormal for him as he’s had other incidents that we have seen where he has been overcome by his anger and have heard stories where he has pulled his gun on others. At this point his anger and immaturity in regards to gun ownership have me concerned for my sister and her her baby’s safety. I reached out to their local sheriffs office to make them aware of his gun ownership and his irrational behavior as well as having a pregnant wife at home.
My sister and BIL act as though my husband beat the living pulp out of my BIL; which is far from what happened. My husband is a 6’3” 200 lbs lumberjack type man whereas my BIL is a 6’ 150 lbs string bean. If my husband wanted to truly hurt him he would have, that’s why he slapped him instead of punching him. My husband left a few scratches and they act like he broke his arm. They also claim that it was self defense as to why my BIL had to pull out the gun after the altercation was over & he was over 20 feet away from the initial altercation.
Prior to this my sister and I were close and both so excited for the baby. I’d been doing her shopping, bringing her lunch, going to her appointments, and I planned on babysitting her baby once she went back to work.
I’m trying to stay hopeful that it won’t last, especially once the baby’s here and reality sets in for her; but this is also the same sister who stopped talking to our own mother for almost a decade for reasons even less significant than this.
Yes, we all know that violence is not the answer, but unfortunately sometimes it does come down to it. In my family we all hold CPLs and none of us were armed at the time except my BIL, which none of us were aware of at the time except for possibly my sister, as we all know it’s a violation and simply not smart to have your weapon on you while drinking. As well as we’re home with family, why should we need a weapon on us?
So here I ask: Is this really what I deserve to never have a relationship with my future niece and sister again?
Do you think it’s the age/generation/maturity difference between my sister and I that makes us see this situation so differently?
Or do you think she’s just doing & believing whatever my BIL tells her? Somewhat of a domestic/Stockholm situation?

May Photo Challenge!!
Our next photo challenge, #Daisies and Daffodolls, will begin on May 1st! It’s a creative, for fun, non-competitive daily challenge for you to share pictures of your doll(s). There will be a new prompt each day, listed below to give you a month to prepare, and you can participate in as many or as few days as you’re interested in. There is no judgement whatsoever, so please share regardless of how complex your props are, and don’t worry about posting a prompt late.
First of all, thank you so much to @desertdollranch for helping with the prompts, especially those surrounding AG birthdays and holidays, and for getting this whole photo challenge thing started back in September! And a huge thank you to @lesbianelizabethcole for designing all 5 banners!
The ground rules are the same as in October and December, but I’ll reiterate them for anyone that might be new. Tag all of your prompt posts with #daisies and daffodolls - all three words, complete with spaces. This will allow us to better find and share each other’s posts. You can organize your own posts however you want, but I recommend including the day’s prompt somewhere for context. Also feel free to post on other social medias if you want.
This is not a competition, and there are no prizes, but it should be a lot of fun. Feel free to use any size and brand of doll that you have! American Girl is very popular on doll tumblr, but all other types are welcome as well, including both established (historical or modern) characters and OCs. This could range from 18-inch dolls to Barbies to handmade dolls or porcelain dolls or even paper dolls.
I’ll reblog this post weekly until the beginning of May, and then begin each week of May with the prompt list for that week. Please find a list of all prompts below the cut.
5/1: The first day of each photo challenge is traditionally for seasonal fashion. Does your doll have a favorite spring outfit? Is it cool and light, or are they still bundled in a sweater for the chilly mornings?
5/2: Spring is all about new beginnings. Is your doll learning a new skill or trying a new activity this spring? Or maybe they just met a new person who became important in their life?
5/3: Today is National Textiles Day. Kirsten’s friends gave her a quilt they made after she missed school to help her family. Does your doll have any clothes or other items that are handmade? If not, do they make any textile items themselves? This could be something sewn, knitted, crocheted, or quilted.

5/7: Happy birthday, Maryellen! Maryellen often feels overlooked in her large family, and she works hard to stand out and show her unique personality. What makes your doll special and unique?

5/9: Happy Mother’s Day! Addy and her mother escaped to freedom together, Caroline’s mother ran a shipyard, and Kirsten’s mother encouraged her not to lose heart. If they don’t have a mother or don’t have a good relationship with her, consider today a free space to show us something you really want to but that isn’t included in these prompts.
5/10: Bugs are everywhere! We might avoid some of them, but others are welcomed. Lightning bugs, ladybugs, bumble bees, and dragonflies are a few happy spring bugs. Show your doll doing something bug-themed. They might take a net out to catch bugs or draw a picture of a bug or hold a ladybug they found. Be creative!
5/11: Parties are always fun! Is your doll going to any birthday parties or sleepovers this spring? Maybe they’re attending a wedding or some other celebration? What are their favorite party activities?
5/12: Spring weather can be a relief after the cold and darkness of winter. What is the weather like where your doll is? Foggy? Rainy? Bright and sunny? Show your doll interacting with their local spring weather.
5/13: Everyone needs mentors and heroes. Who does your doll look up to? What have they learned from them or how do they honor them?
5/14: It’s the last day of the school year. What’s your doll’s favorite extracurricular activity or aspect of school that they’ll miss until next fall?
5/15: Happy birthday, Luciana! Luciana loves learning about space and wants to be an astronaut and go to Mars one day. Getting to space involves studying many different things, particularly various fields of science. Show your doll doing something related to space or science.

5/21: Spring is full of baby animals. Show your doll interacting with some sort of baby animal. (Safely! Please don’t grab a real squirrel or bunny!)
5/22: In December we celebrated Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day. I’d like to reprise that, but with a twist: this time, we’re headed into the future! The amount of time and what your doll finds in the future is completely up to you. What do they do while there?
5/23: Cakes and pies and ice cream, oh my! What is your doll’s favorite dessert?
5/24: There may be fewer holidays in spring than in December, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to celebrate! Does your doll celebrate Passover or Easter? Or maybe they prefer a more obscure spring holiday to liven things up? Show them participating in whatever celebration you like.
5/25: Yellow is the color of flowers and sunny days and ducklings. Show your doll wearing or using something yellow.
5/26: Happy birthday, Samantha! After her birthday party, Samantha hears Aunt Cornelia speak at a suffragette meeting in New York City. What is a cause that is important to your doll? Show them with a sign supporting or protesting something close to their heart. As an added challenge, use a cause unrelated to the current events prompt.
5/27: It’s summer vacation! What are some of your doll’s favorite activities now that they’re free from school? Alternatively, what are some of their favorite hobbies to do anytime?

4. When they can’t sleep, what do they do?
When she’s still living at Kuchiki Manor, Rukia likes to walk around the gardens in her pajamas in the middle of the night and talk to the koi. Byakuya does this, too, and they have passed many an insomnia night together. Once she’s married, if she can’t sleep, Rukia will get up and go do something-- make a cup of tea or draw or catch up on paperwork, and she’ll almost always wonder if Byakuya’s out talking to the fishes.
Prior to their marriage, when Renji can’t sleep, he likes to stare at the ceiling and stew in his past failures. Once they’re together, he almost never has trouble sleeping, but if he does, he’ll just snuggle Rukia until he drifts off again.
9. Who accidentally pushes a door instead of pulling?
Rukia has never, in her entire existence, pushed a door that said “PULL” on it. How could you even think this? How dare you think this.
Renji pushed on a pull-door one time 45 years ago and Rukia has never let him live it down for even a second.
22. Who texts more often?
They text each other in roughly equal measures, but Renji texts more, overall.
Renji is friends with a good 90%+ of the Seireitei, and even though he’s not really a gossip, he is sort of a nexus of gossip. He is on 16 different group chats and his DMs are the true forbidden archives of everything that happens in Soul Society. Aizen may have tracked the growth of Ichigo’s potential for 15 years, but he doesn’t know the full details of the time Shinji may or may not have caught Yoruichi hooking up with Soi Fon at one of Byakuya’s flower-viewing parties (an incident which had to be pieced together in postmortem by at least seven different lieutenants)
Also, Renji tries to use some semblance of grammar when he texts, but Rukia is absolutely feral in terms of sending things like “y u do this 2 me?”
Both of them are embarrassingly heavy emoji users.
31. Who has bigger cravings? What are they?
They both grew up in food insecurity, but have sort of come out of it with opposite outlooks. Renji eats on opportunity. He doesn’t really get cravings for particular things, but he’ll eat almost anything, including horrifying combinations of things. If a diner has a menu item called Garbage (anything), he will order it immediately. He is absolutely a pineapple on pizza guy. He thinks Orihime is a culinary genius. He’s somewhat thrifty by nature when it comes to eating--he’ll go out to be social, but he’s more likely to eat in, or get in a good meal at the mess hall. Over the years, he has spent a lot of time at other people’s family gatherings, and grandmothers instinctively love to feed him things.
Rukia also has a very generous palate, but there are particular things she really loves, and the one nice thing about being a Kuchiki is that she’s not shy about Treating Herself when she wants something. She loves to eat out, and since Byakuya is very Judgy about food choices, she especially loves going out for greasy junk food with Renji. The primary thing she craves is atomically spicy stuff. Poor Renji doesn’t handle spice very well, but he’s always good to come along to hype her up and take pictures of her conquests and to help her get home when she overdoes it and has tears and snot running out of her face. She will also declare that she needs dessert sometimes, and they’ll go get ice cream or some other extremely indulgent sweet, which Renji loves, even if he would never do it just for himself.
35. What do they smell when they smell amortentia?
I had to look up what this was, and apparently, it’s the love potion in Harry Potter, which smells like whatever you find most attractive, according to the HP wiki.
To Renji, it would smell like the promise of snow on a winter day, pine, wintergreen, and a jasmine perfume Rukia wore exactly once to a fancy party. It smells like a Kuchiki Rukia moodboard, and absolutely nothing like the actual Kuchiki Rukia, who smells mostly like soap, pickles, Captain Ukitake’s eucalyptus cough medicine, and cherry-flavored Chappy-brand chapstick.
To Rukia, it smells like a not-as-bad-as-it-sounds blend of gym sweat, hair tonic, soy sauce, ink, and camellias. It smells exactly like Renji actually smells.
44. What are their nicknames for each other?
A long-standing feature of my fanfic is that Renji calls Rukia “Ru”, but only when it’s just the two of them, and he’s feeling particularly mushy toward her. It was something he started doing in their latter days in Inuzuri as his way of telling her he loved her. Astute readers may have noticed that I have had her called him “Ren” exactly once, in one of the later chapters of Between Tides.
Everyone knows this already, but their texting handles for each other are 🐒🐍🕶️ and ❄️🐰

Boggart Form: Her inner demons are her downfall. Her Riddikulus form makes the entire room dark, leaving her in the spotlight, standing in front of the glowing column of a Cursed Vault, while shadows of her past begin to echo her worst thoughts. Most of them pertained Jacob’s permanent disappearance, or her older sister abandoning her for good. She just cannot stand the thought of standing there, helpless while her family suffered.
Riddikulus Form: Her Riddikulus form is of the demons popping like soap bubbles all around her, the voices warbled with every bubble that rose. The prevailing darkness will fade as well. The Cursed Vault will become a giant teddy bear.
Amortentia: (What do they smell like?) Freshly ground mint, cinnamon, freshly baked fudge, and tomato juice.
Amortentia: (What do they smell?) She smells fresh linens, nutmeg, smoke from a fire, and...wait, is that honey lemon tea?
Patronus: If she can produce a Patronus, it would be of a black swan. A little strange when compared to Jacob’s falcon and Clara’s unicorn, but her grace and poise is not to be underestimated.
Patronus Memory: the day the tension from the Cursed Vaults finally subsided and she saw the light return to her siblings’ eyes.
Mirror of Erised: She sees herself with her older siblings, both of them genuinely smiling in happiness. Her family has completely reconciled, and she feels at peace.
Specialized/Favourite Spells: Before Em goes to Hogwarts, she knew already of the Herbivicus Charm, which her father taught her to speed up the growth of flowers. This was very useful for her whenever people requested her to make flower crowns at the arts and crafts club she heads along with her friend Dawn. Unbeknownst to several of her classmates, she could also perform a good shield charm thanks to training with her siblings in her first year.

Pre Hogwarts:
Em was around 5 or 6 when Jacob disappeared. Since then, all she had known was broken bonds and tears.
Her sister drifted away from her as well in her first 5 years at Hogwarts. She had to learn in this time to stand alone in the worst of the storm.
1st Year:
Em was Sorted into Hufflepuff on the first day at school
The statue curse prevailed during little Em’s first year at Hogwarts
Following the Halloween Feast, Em created the Arts and Crafts club at her friend Dawn’s suggestion--where members create many wonderful things out of everyday items
She and Clara take up Bill’s offer to go to the Burrow for Christmas.
After Rowan Khanna’s death, Em was roped into the Circle of Khanna by Diego Caplan who insisted the group needed her duelling skills
While Clara was preparing the Polyjuice Potion to infiltrate R, Em got to see all the Vaults firsthand that have been broken
Prior to Clara’s trip to the Black Lake with Ben, Merula, and Jacob, Em comes around and gives Clara a flower crown to present to the merqueen

Em returns to Hogwarts without her siblings for the first time. However, it was then when she met the Boy Who Lived--Harry Potter.

When the Chamber of Secrets was opened, little Em was one of the first to ensure that all the younger Hufflepuff students remained calm in this time
She already knew firsthand that Gilderoy Lockhart was suspicious, and so she wrote her mother when he was outed (and his memory was permanently wiped)

Em becomes a Hufflepuff Prefect for her fifth year along with Cedric Diggory
The year that Sirius Black escaped has been a tough one for her. Imagine Percy constantly on high alert, especially since he’s Head Boy--she’s adapted his high alertness once more, fearing for the entire student body once more
Despite all this, little Em came out successful in her OWLs, obtaining an impressive eight OWLs while only failing History of Magic (she dropped Muggle Studies after her 4th year)
6th Year:
Enter: The Goblet of Fire, and the Triwizard Tournament!
Em was too young to participate, so she ended up sitting by the sidelines cheering both her friend Cedric Diggory and Harry Potter on
She did not develop a crush on any of the boys in her year (mostly because she can’t be bothered right now with romance, maybe), but she did go to the ball with another Ravenclaw boy in her year
The loss of Cedric Diggory at the end of her 6th year had put her in another mute grief. First, she sat through Rowan Khanna’s memorial--she didn’t expect to sit through another one five years later, and one for one of her closest friends too.
7th Year:
Prior to starting her 7th year, her older sister Clara left for China
Em becomes one of the Head Girls in her 7th year, but the arrival of Dolores Umbridge and the way she instilled all these regulations made her secretly pissed off
She wholeheartedly supported Fred and George in testing their joke products so that they could make a profit out of their talents
When they left Hogwarts on their broomsticks after a while, she too was one of the few who wished she could leave the school but could not
Order of the Phoenix / 2nd Wizarding War:
Em was roped into the Order of the Phoenix along with her brother, Jacob, by none other than Professor Dumbledore immediately following graduation
While her sister was in China holding back the Japanese forces, the times they had to talk were far and few in between--however, they were able to talk when they could, and Em relayed everything that happened to her through encrypted letters sent to her grandmother
Em was the one who alerted Clara of the upcoming Battle of Hogwarts--while the siege went underway, she stuck close to Diego
Em survives the battle--she mourned for Fred and the many lives that were lost
Post-War:
Em ends up becoming a Healer at St Mungo’s, helping those who have undergone traumatic experiences during Voldemort’s rise

PERSONALITY
Though she comes off as a shy soul, little Em is not completely fragile. Behind her kind eyes laid years of suffering from her family’s arguments and broken bonds--yet she pushes forward, and her persistence does not go unnoticed
Em is always willing to offer a helping hand, even though she’s the one who needs it most.
She cares deeply for those who she ends up befriending and trusting. This also includes most of Clara’s friends at Hogwarts.
Though soft-spoken and easy to knock over, her spells could pack a serious punch.
MISC
Em’s love of Herbology came from her father, whom she loved helping in the family gardens long before Jacob’s disappearance.
She doesn’t play many instruments like her sister, but she has a decent singing voice good enough to join the Frog Choir. However, the thought of that made Em shake her head--she really only sings for fun, after all.
Em’s love for crafts came from the time Jacob gifted her a Hippogriff ornament at her first Christmas that he made himself.

31 Days of Wayhaven, Day 26

Note: This is the most self-indulgent little fic I’ve written this month, purely because Cam’s faceclaim is the same as a character that I killed off, then later decided to resurrect as a bigger role, then ultimately set aside on a shelf and I had a mighty need to bring him back as a cameo here. This, of course, meant that I needed to bring my small witchy Marle in as a cameo, seeing as she is the Thelma to Fiona’s (courtesy of @asaucyginger ) Louise (or is that the other way around?)
For the @31daysofwayhaven event.
Wayhaven, Cam discovered, was a quaint little seaside town that had charmed him the moment he stepped out of the car and looked over the docks. Closing his eyes, he felt the pull of the sea, the feeling still gentle and welcoming yet with an industrious air to it as if the waves had many things to do and very little time to do them in.
He and Penny walked hand in hand to the nearby historical home turned Bed & Breakfast where they were planning on staying the weekend, Penny pointing out a few shops she wanted to check out while they were there from her phone. Apparently the Mayor of the town was trying to make this a tourist destination and had revamped the single webpage from what looked to be self-taught HTML into a more appealing site since the last time Cam had curiously checked it out.
He paused on the front porch, Penny already entering to check them in. As much as he enjoyed an opportunity to be alone with Penny, Wayhaven was Unit Bravo’s home turf now, and it felt like stepping on their toes to be in town for Agency work. As part of their demotion to Unit Delta, Cam’s team had been given administrative fieldwork detail that was usually done by new recruits or lower level clearance units. Nicky had been insulted, muttering all manner of foul things under his breath as he took over the more clerical type jobs, and Penny had been irked at being given menial tasks that wouldn’t even challenge green field agents, but Cam had accepted their fate with more grace.
For example, this job that had brought them into Bravo’s new backyard. There was a green witch who had newly decided to not only make her home in town, but to open up shop. This wasn’t unusual for her, if her file was anything to go by. She followed Agency protocols for business owners to the letter and had a superior rating in every inspection her shop underwent. By all means, Marle Starling was a model supernatural citizen and this initial inspection of her new shop would be a formality. The only negative mark on her record was the fact that she was close friends with Agent Fiona, which only proved to Cam that even the straightest laced and professional people had need of a little chaos every now and again.
Turning to the front door, Cam joined Penny in getting their things situated into their room before heading out. The town was small and the weather pleasant enough that they both decided to walk to the shop.
Penny had gotten distracted at the sight of a cute little flower shop, so Cam opened the door to Tea and Tarot by himself, the gentle chime of bells above the door welcoming him in. The shop was small, but decorated in a way that made it seem cozy instead of cramped. There was enough room for several tables for patrons to enjoy their tea and Cam’s eyes flicked over to the till where there were advertisements for various teas ranging from High Tea to Afternoon Tea and even a birthday party tea. The counter featured a display case with a few baked items, signs advertising that many had come from Haley’s Bakery downtown, but there were a few scones and other treats that were made in-house. The lemon bars in particular proudly displayed a House Specialty! sign next to them. Even the large chalkboard with the various teas available written on them was pleasant to the eye, said teas charmingly organized in large glass canisters both behind the counter and on top of it for easy viewing.
Greenery from plants hanging at the ceiling crept along the white painted brick walls, and there was a back alcove with a Tarot Readings Here sign hanging over heavy green velvet drapes that when closed, would give both the reader and the person asking for a reading privacy. All in all, it was a peaceful, charming little shop.
“Hello! I’ll be with you in a moment!” Cam waited as a petite woman with dark brown hair done up in a Dutch braid emerged from a back storeroom, wiping her hands on a towel. She wore a cheery looking mustard colored dress with bees and flowers printed on it and looked exactly the way he imagined an owner of such an establishment would look. “Good afternoon, sorry for the wait. How may I…” Cam watched as she looked up at him, all the blood draining from her face and the towel falling from limp fingers.
“Are you alright?” he asked in concern, stepping forward and holding out a hand when he saw her sway forward, her own hand shooting out to catch herself on the countertop next to her. “You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.”
She blinked and cleared her throat. “Sorry,” she said, putting a shaking hand to her throat. “For a moment there, you reminded me of someone I knew.”
“Do you need to sit down?” Cam pulled out a chair and offered it to her.
She laughed. “No, I’m fine. Thank you for your concern though.” She tilted her head. “Well, seeing as you’re not the person I thought you were, I haven’t seen you in these parts. Marle Starling, proprietor.”
Seeing that the shop was empty, Cam decided to forgo the usual pretend to be a normal human niceties. “Commanding Agent Cameron Buchanan.”
Her brow arched. “Ah. I was wondering when the Agency was going to send an inspector. Yet I wasn’t expecting them to send one of their unit leaders to do a clerk’s job.”
He shrugged. “Long story. May I have a look around?” He held up his phone, showing her the inspection document he had pulled up.
“Please, be my guest. Would you like a cup of tea while you work?” Marle moved behind the counter and flicked on an electric tea kettle.
“No thank you.” Cam began his report, watching out of the corner of his eye as Marle pulled a small French press out from behind the counter and filled it with one of the blends she had in stock. “So, green witch? Have you done any work in town?”
“Not directly.” She added a large dollop of honey into a ceramic mug shaped like a honeycomb, complete with a cheerful looking bee sitting on top of the handle. “I carry teas to soothe colds, unstuff sinuses, and help people fall asleep, but selling such remedies isn’t outlawed. My beeswax balms for chapped hands and lips are made from the same formulas that you would find anywhere else, even if the herbs and flowers used in the making are of better quality.” The kettle gave a beep as it reached temperature and she poured the contents into the French press, Cameron watching as the tea swirled to life inside the glass, tinting the water with a faint yellowish red color.
“You stock your own honey?” He pitched his voice to be heard as he wandered into the back stockroom Marle had come out of, making note of the local Health Department approved sink and kitchen area. Something had just finished baking in the industrial oven and the smell made Cam’s stomach rumble.
“Harvested fresh from my bees in my backyard.”
He came out in time to see Marle sitting at one of the tables, her face in her hands as she tried to catch her breath. He hung back long enough until she was composed before making enough noise to let her know that he was back in the front. “And your readings?”
“Standard tarot readings, nothing magical about them. I also do rune readings, though I haven’t gotten much interest in them. People tend to stick with ways of divination that they’re familiar with.”
“Well,” Cam finished the incredibly brief inspection report. “I can confidently say that your establishment passes all Agency requirements. Unless you have any questions, I think I’m done here.”
Marle’s eyes grew large. “Wait! Are you sure you can’t stay for a cup of tea? Perhaps something to eat?”
He smiled as he shook his head. “I’m afraid not. I’m meeting up with my fiancée and I don’t want to keep her waiting.” He winked. “Besides, I wouldn’t think that you’d want to spend more time with a person that looks like someone that clearly upset you.”
Marle opened her mouth, color rising to her cheeks. “No, I wasn’t upset.” She clasped her hands together, her thumb rubbing against her fingers. “You caught me by surprise is all. I haven’t seen the man you look like in a long time.” Her eyes went down to the table’s surface. “A very long time.”
Both of them turned towards the front door when the chimes signaled another patron. “Pour us a cup, Mar,” the woman said, unwrapping a scarf from her hair, the bright red curls bouncing around her shoulders once they were free. “And add some extra sugar in. Du Pain in My Ass Mortain fucked up my ribs something awful just now and it irks me that we ended in a draw this round.”
Marle rose from her seat and went behind the counter again. “Fiona, we have a guest.”
The woman, who was slightly shorter than Marle, smirked. “No you don’t. Agent Buchanan.”
He nodded. “Agent Fiona.”
Fiona, uncharacteristically narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you done with Agency business, selkie man?”
The hard tone of her voice was one he’d never heard before, especially since the handful of times they’d interacted had been light and flirty. “I am.”
“Then get out.” She flashed him a smile that was too full of pointed teeth. “Please.”
The protective way that Fiona rounded the table until she put herself between Marle and himself made him wonder what was going on. “Have a good evening. It was nice meeting you, Marle.”
“Likewise.”
Cam left the shop feeling oddly out of sorts from the strange encounter, but his spirits lifted when he saw Penny sitting at a nearby bench. He was about to make his way towards her when he heard Marle call out to him. “I’m sorry about Fiona,” she said in a rush, holding a white waxed paper bag out. “She’s a little prickly when she comes back from a -”
“An unofficial brawl with Agent Adam du Mortain?” He held up a hand. “Trust me, those fights aren’t as secret as the two of them would like to think. And don’t worry, I don’t take offence.”
She let out a breath. “Good. Here, for you and your fiancée.” She pressed the bag into his hands. “Lemon bars. They’re my signature treat.”
There was a strange prickle of magic as their fingers brushed together. Cam frowned as the hopeful look in her eye faded and her mouth turned sadly downward. “I thought you said you didn’t practice on people,” he murmured.
“Sorry, I sensed you had a headache and I didn’t say a word about practicing on Agents,” she countered. Her eyes flicked to a point behind his shoulder. “I take it that she’s your wife to-be?”
Cam didn’t need to look behind him to know that Penny was making her way towards them. After so long together, he could easily sense her presence. “She is.”
Marle looked up at him. “And you’re happy?”
There was zero hesitation. “I am. Happier than I’ve been in a long time.”
She closed her eyes and smiled, her lips trembling the faintest bit. “Good.” She opened her eyes and Cam was surprised to see a sheen of tears when she looked up at him next. “I wish the two of you many more years of happiness to come.” Just as Penny walked up to them, Marle backed away, slowly turning and entering her shop again.
“That was...odd,” Cam said, watching as the Open sign on the door slowly turned to Closed.
“Did you get the inspection done?” Penny asked.
“I did.” Shaking his head, which he only then realized that the faint ache that had lingered for most of the afternoon was magically gone, he held up the bag in his hand. “Hungry? I heard these lemon bars are a house special.”

Marle stood at the door to her shop and watched the couple walk away, the blonde woman threading her arm through Cam’s and resting her head on his shoulder as they went. She couldn’t help the shuddering breath that escaped her as she locked the door and turned off the lights, leaving the main area dark save for the soft glow of white fairy lights strung around the perimeter of the room.
“Here,” Fiona said, handing Marle her mug.
“There’s bourbon in this,” Marle told her, taking a sniff. “Way more than a shot too.”
“I figured you needed it.” Fiona gently put her hand on her friend’s shoulder. “That wasn’t him.”
“I know it wasn’t.” Marle made her way back to one of the tables and sat down. “Though, gods, at first I thought it was.”
“He does bear a striking resemblance.” Fiona puttered behind the counter and made herself a cup of tea, adding a liberal amount of booze from the flask in her pocket. Before joining Marle at the table, she slid open the bakery display and grabbed the plate of triple chocolate brownies that were still warm from the oven. “But he isn’t Bjorn.”
Marle twisted her fingers together. “I thought, maybe, that there may have been a chance…”
“Oh, honey, you didn’t.”
“I was smart enough to whisk his headache away so he didn’t know I was reading him for any other enchantment, maybe something that had caused memory loss.”
The plate of brownies and mug went down on the table with a clatter before Fiona pulled her chair close to Marle’s and took her hands in her own. “Your husband has been dead for over eighty years. His ship capsized in a storm and there were no survivors.”
“They never recovered a body.”
Fiona’s fingers squeezed. “And the two of us never recovered one either. I thought that you’d…”
Marle pulled her hands away. “What? Accepted my husband’s death?” She closed her eyes and took a breath. “I had. It’s just...when I saw Cameron walk into my shop, wearing the same types of sweater that my husband liked to wear and looking just like him…” She stopped to wipe at her cheek. “I had this hope that maybe, just maybe the impossible had happened.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m not.” She sniffled and scrubbed at her eyes. “He’s been gone for eighty years, but I miss him. I miss him every day. Today was exceptionally hard, but to have even the briefest of moments where my Bjorn was brought back to me…”
She didn’t fight it when Fiona’s arms wrapped around her. “I’d hoped that you never had a reason to meet him,” she said, smoothing her friend’s hair as she cried. “He’s a good man, clever and polite when it comes to dealing with the fey, but I wanted to spare you the heartache when I realized he was the spitting image.” She pressed a brief kiss against the crown of Marle’s head. “I’m sorry, m’dear. Even if you’re not.”
“Thanks, Fee.” Marle moved away and used the towel Fiona had thought to bring with her to wipe at her eyes. Looking up at the ceiling, she let out a heavy sigh. “The only thing I’m sorry is that you decided to be friends with a woman prone to weeping.”
Fiona looked at her for a moment. People processed grief differently, and for someone who was for all intents immortal unless burned at the stake for being a witch - a practice that Fiona was glad to see fall out of favor, by the way - Marle had a great deal of time to carry the weight of her grief until she decided it was time to let it and her departed husband rest. She herself was no stranger to grief, she’d gained and lost a number of loves in her long lifetime and wagered that she would gain and lose a handful more before she was done having fun in this world.
“Please. You’re the one who thought it would be wise to befriend me.” Reaching over, she pulled the plate of brownies closer to them. “But I know what will lift your spirits?”
Marle looked at her friend. “Does it involve eating that entire platter of brownies and getting wasted on whatever you have in that flask of yours?”
“You know me too well.” She picked one of the brownies up and took a bite, closing her eyes at the flavor. If it was ever determined that she had one, Fiona would gladly sell her soul for a lifetime supply of these brownies. They were better than anything else she had ever eaten. They were better than anything else she had ever attempted to make herself. They were better than sex.
Okay, so that was up for review. It depended on the partner. The fact of the matter was that Marle’s brownies were damn good and she sold them at a shockingly cheap price to people who had better appreciate what they were eating.
“So what do you say? Let’s get shitfaced and sugar buzzed?” She hoped that it would be distraction enough to keep Marle from being upset all evening.
Marle picked up her mug and lifted it towards Fiona, who picked up her own mug and carefully touched it with a clink of ceramic. “Best idea of the day.”
“Hey now, you haven’t even heard my idea to use the fairy door I’ve got stashed somewhere to head to the all-male sauna in Finland. The locals know me by name.”
That made Marle snort into her tea. “Why doesn’t that surprise me?”
“Hey, a girl knows how to have a good time.”
“That you do.” She reached out and squeezed Fiona’s hand. “Thanks, Fee.”
She squeezed back. “Any time.”

1. Do you prefer writing with black or blue pen?
I like both, it depends though. Probably black.
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or city?
I’ve lived in the city my whole life, there are pros and cons to both options but I can picture myself living in a city when I have my own house
3. If you could learn a new skill what would it be?
Probably to speak fluent Spanish or Italian seeing as that’s the language my family speaks mostly. Or drums or saxophone !!!!!!
4. Do you drink your coffee/tea with sugar?
I don’t really like coffee so I seldom drink it, but I have a tea nearly every day with creamed honey
5. What was your favourite book as a child?
Hmm. This is sort of hard because I’ve always liked reading but only seriously started reading when I was 12 or so and I skipped YA novels and dove straight into like “adult” books. I re-read a book by a Canadian author, Raziel Ried, When everything feels like the movies maybe 3 or 4 times. I also love(d) diary of a wimpy kid.
6. Do you prefer baths or showers?
I shower every night and honestly I don’t care for baths much, I would like to, and I would like to take baths with lush products but idk I am hesitant
7. If you could be a mythical creature, which one would it be?
I would say a mermaid, dragon or maybe even a fairy or something that can fly!

Paper all the way
9. What is your favourite item of clothing?
Hard to say. I like this huge shirt I have from the mountain that has cats on it, I also like “dad” shirts a lot and fun seasonal grandma sweaters. Also shoes.

I hated it as a little girl but I love it now, ans I like that I am named partly after my grandmother who has passed

I would say maybe my aunt, Courtney love or princess Caroline 🤡

Probably an actress, musician or something like that

Sometimes but I have a lot of trouble sleeping anyways

Walking down the hospital corridor holding my grandmas hand and holding a cream stuffed elephant and balloon in the other going to meet my newborn sister and my mom who I hadn’t seen for a few days because she was busy giving birth, peeing my pants at marine land, making “food” with flour salt and other things at home, playing coffee break with my mom where she’d give me the teeniest amount of coffee and we would pretend to be construction workers my dad worked alongside with, having cookies and milk in red plastic bowls as a bedtime snack in the kitchen

i was tagged by @jlf23tumble, and since i’m bored and have recently gained a few new followers thins might be the perfect time to answer some questions.

1. Do you prefer writing with a black pen or blue pen? blue, but i generally prefer pencil.
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or city? city, but mid-sized? i want to know the streets and the people, but still be able to disappear sometimes (also i need to be around art and museums of some kind)
3. If you could learn a new skill what would it be? knitting, or better at sewing. i’d like to be more creative over all.
4. Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar? never, and none of those syrups with weird flavours either.
5. What was your favourite book as a child? at what age - but probably “Vem kan trösta knyttet?” melancholy by Tove Jansson ftw.
6. Do you prefer baths or showers? i took a bath every night for about a month this spring, to sooth different pains. it changed me.
7. If you could be a mythical creature, which one would it be? a sphinx

11. Who is a mentor to you? not mentor but i’ve learnt a lot from my family, my mum, dad, and sisters, and i continue to do so. i like to think they learn things from me as well.

Tell us about an early childhood memory. sitting on the sofa in my parents’ house, waiting for dad to finish in the bathroom so we can leave for daycare. everyday i’d get to listen to a tape or vinyl, and one of the records had a board game on the inside, when you opened it up. i listened to that specific record again when i was about 20/21 and realised that it had shaped a lot of my political views - swedish 70s progg, a socialist, anti capitalist, childrens album. these days i put it on on the 1st of may.
19. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? i’ll try most things once, as long as it’s vegetarian.
20. What are you most thankful for? health, and the good health of the people i love.
21. Do you like spicy food? i do, but i have some issues with dyspepsia so sometimes i have to eat the blandest stuff.
22. Have you ever met someone famous? famous swedes yes, international? eh, not really. (went to a fancy party during fashion/design week in ldn once, i guess i did mingle with them there)

35. Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean? ocean! salt water in the hair, on the body, sand... i love it.
36. What would you do if you found £50 on the ground? pick it up, buy drinks for any friend who could show up within the hour.

38. What is the one thing you would want to teach your children? to be open and understanding, the base for the rest.
39. If you had to have a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it? "space is a practised place” on the back of my right arm, just above the elbow (or the inside, i can never decide)

1. Do you prefer writing with a black pen or blue pen? black in my lab notebook at work and blue on loose paper, and in college I always had a rainbow of colored pens to take notes with
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or city? It changes all the time. I want to live close to the city for concerts and restaurants, but I also want a little farmhouse with wildflowers all over the yard.
3. If you could learn a new skill what would it be? I want to be fluent in so many languages.
4. Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar? yes I prefer sweet drinks
5. What was your favourite book as a child? I loved the Amelia’s Notebooks series by Marissa Moss so much when I was little. They were written like diaries and looked like composition notebooks. I loved the idea of keeping a diary with doodles all over and a bunch of keepsakes taped to the pages.
6. Do you prefer baths or showers? Showers
7. If you could be a mythical creature, which one would it be? Werewolf
8. Paper or electronic books? ebooks! I used to always carry a book with me, so it’s great to be able to carry hundreds in my phone where ever I go

10. Do you like your name or would you like to change it? I have a love/hate relationship with my name
11. Who is a mentor to you? I never thought I would have a mentor, but one of my colleagues has become one and it is really helpful to have someone with so much STEM industry experience to help me in the early stages of my career.

18. Tell us about an early childhood memory. When I was around 5 years old, I wanted to be a radio DJ on the local country radio station when I grew up, because I could think of nothing better than to spend your whole day at work listening to music. That dream was short-lived because I hate public speaking and hearing my own voice on recordings.
19. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? It’s not weird to me because I grew up with it, but in theory it sounds like a strange food, so I will say pickled fish
20. What are you most thankful for? Family
21. Do you like spicy food? No
22. Have you ever met someone famous? Other than when I’ve gone to meet-and-greets for bands, I once met Halsey at a Catfish and the Bottlemen concert. It was a super awkward encounter 😬
23. Do you keep a diary or journal? I’ve never been able to keep a journal despite numerous attempts, but I do keep a monthly planner where I track habits and goals with stickers. Right now I have some holographic dinosaur and glittery flower stickers!
24. Do you prefer to use a pen or a pencil? For most things, pencil. At work pencil is not an option, so I tend to be really particular about how smooth a pen writes.

35. Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean? When I was little I spent so many days at the pool that it wore out its appeal. I’ve only seen the ocean once and it wasn’t somewhere I could swim, so I don’t know if I would like swimming in the ocean

37. Have you ever seen a shooting star? yes, one summer my friend had a birthday party sleepover where we slept in a tent outside during a meteor shower
38. What is the one thing you would want to teach your children? To be willing to try new things
39. If you could get a tattoo, what would it be and where would you get it? I already have a snail and a hummingbird. I want a set of three triangles on my wrist next.
40. What can you hear now? The 40 year old air conditioner unit in my apartment (why can’t it just stop working already so I can get a quieter, more energy efficient one 😩)

46. What do you regret the most? Believing the person that told me there would be available parking in the lot at the radio station for the meet and greet I won at a radio station. I am usually very anxious about parking in the cities, but they said there was plenty of space, so I didn’t plan for any extra time. My friend and I ended up parking nine blocks away and missed half of the event and I’m still pissed about it. And now I’m even more anxious about parking any time I go into the cities.
47. Last movie you saw? Titanic was playing on tv, but I only saw the second half after the ship had already hit the iceberg so I missed all the good romantic bits 😢 and the last one in theaters was Spies in Disguise
48. Last tv show you watched? I started watching Golden Girls this winter and I’m on season 4.
49. Invent a word and it’s meaning. Coronastalgia - the longing for events that were cancelled because of the pandemic 😩 rip to my 4+ concerts I was looking forward to
