Reading your characters profile, I realize you never mentioned their date of birth.  Can you tell me the year or time period that the characters (USA, Australia, Ireland,….)  be born?
So I kind of did that on purpose because its one of those things that people have their own very specific headcanons and versions and I don't feel that strongly about it because there's multiple ways to go about things and I've changed my mind about this couple of times but generally I go with the earliest reference to a culture emerging I can find. The idea of a nation rather than the hard founding dates because there are more to these things than just when a European stepped foot somewhere. And full disclaimer, when I don't have writing to use, I'm using archaeology and artistic expression as what that idea might have been. Also I think if I were to rewrite this now, but I don't want replace a lot of existing writing I would make them born much later but fuck it, here we go. Also I had so many links to put in this but I lost them so eh, there's one lmao fuck my entire life im so tired.
Britannia/Eirian — 1500-1000 BC. I'm kind of bullshitting because geography and history are hard to do when there's like 2 pieces of Roman propaganda that survive. The National Museum of Wales says the Celts arrived about 1000 BCE so that's when she found herself rooted in the British Isles. She might be older than that.
Ireland/Brighid — 600-400 BCE. again we're working with what's in a lot of ways prehistory here so the earliest example I could find of what archaeologists identified as a distinctly Irish take on broader artistic styles. Particularly in ironwork. There's a spearhead that was found in the River Inny that is of a style recognisable in medieval Ireland but carbon dated too before 500 BCE.
Scotland/Alasdair — 600-400 BCE. The archaeology suggests a a population increase and an artistic coalescing as temperatures warmed and some new prosperity allowed new pottery styles, increased use of horses came along and allowed the very earliest brochs or stone towers mostly found on the coastlines of Scotland seem to date to this era.
Wales/Rhys — 400-300 BCE. Literally based this off one of my favourite torcs found in Wales and that's as good as I've got send help.
England/Arthur — 50BCE-100 AD. Roman Britain get jiggy with it just wanted a couple of centuries between the baby bilge rate and his siblings.
America/Alfred — 1580s. The first reference I ever saw to America being associated with new opportunities and money making and protestant havens was 1585.
Canada/Matt - 1610s. The first reference to Canadians being different from European Frenchmen was in the 1610s so Matt popped out around then. The French unlike the British or Spanish were less attentive to the claims they made on Canada but then didn't settle for nearly a century.
Australia/Jack — 1790s. Australians as a concept was the late 1790s with some of the first references made by Gaelic speaking Irish prisoners.
Aotearoa/Zee — 1810s. She's a little harder because there's a lot of escaped prisoners, whalers and other random white people living with Māori before the Brits properly showed up but I'm just rolling with it.

I have a multi part question.
First - do you think muggleborns would be encouraged to get non-owl post birds? As owning an owl in a muggle neighborhood would seem odd?(Im not sure if it would even be possible in some countries without some kind of permit.)
Second - expanding on above do you think the Ministry has lists of banned pets for certain neighborhoods? In my country there are certain neighborhoods that will ban specific dog breeds. Do you think the Ministry would do something similar for muggle neighborhoods? Like ban animals that would be too obviously magical or just deemed “exotic” by muggle standards (ie owls).
First - do you think muggleborns would be encouraged to get non-owl post birds? As owning an owl in a muggle neighborhood would seem odd?(Im not sure if it would even be possible in some countries without some kind of permit.)
Post Owls are the only kind of post birds we see in HP. While other countries may (may) use other birds, post owls are the only one we have evidence for. While some wixes may keep augureys or have a firebird as a companion, Post Owls are reliably seen. Harry was at no point given a warning regarding keeping Hedwig, and while that may have been initially in part because of his status as Boy Who Lived I don't think that's all there is to it. When his standing fell as Fudge tried to hide the rise of Voldemort he became harsher towards Harry both in the news and legally speaking. If there was any legal basis to warn off muggle-borns and those living near to muggles from keeping owls, it was at no pointed cited as a reason to sanction Harry. Therefore I think that, at least in magical Britain, there's no such rule, legal or unspoken, in place.
Now, if we're talking about elsewhere, then it's a different matter. As we know, the USian magical world is far more isolationist and wary of muggles than even Europe is and has severe laws in place regarding the keeping of magical creatures, especially in muggle-inhabited spaces. While I imagine that as times moved on from the Fantastic Beasts films era some of those laws may have been repealed, relaxed, or amended, I imagine that largely they're as they were. We hear from the Goldstein sisters (at least if I recall rightly) that their grandfather kept and bred owls even given they live (at least at present) in a muggle-populated city, which suggests that owls are still considered allowable, perhaps being grandfathered in by the early colonial government and that prior precedent carrying over during the establishment of MACUSA.
However, do I think it's likely that, say, a US muggle-born might be advised to get a less noticeable bird? Yes. The magical US is established as being much more isolationist and wary and even if laws regarding that were relaxed the historic precedent wouldn't go away quickly, least of all with magical lifespans. I suspect that the magical US has a number of magically-bred common birds. Most urban pigeon populations of course are feral, and pigeons as messengers have a long historical precedent. Corvids of various kinds would also be relatively feasible, if harder to explain - pigeons and doves one might genuinely keep, corvids are rather less likely. That said, there's a reason I have the Naberius and the Valravn and the Cornicla on this blog and there's a reason I note in... oh, one of them, I can't recall which at this point, that they're popular in certain communities. Teens will be edgy at times, and of course at least some muggle-born teens with magic would want ravens or crows for pets.
I don't think the magical US would demand permits for keeping owls in muggle neighbourhoods, but I do think they'd advise strenuously against it, and would likewise encourage purveyors of postal avians to encourage those in muggle neighbourhoods pick less noticeable birds, possibly by giving tax breaks on the sale of certain birds over others.
I think it's less "banned" and more "you will be legally accused of muggle-baiting if you aren't bloody careful about it". Certain animals obviously wouldn't be allowed in muggle neighbourhoods - dragons for example. But of creatures at that level of X-classification, they're not going to be kept by (most) people anyway - it's not legally allowable and it's not feasible either. Hagrid and Newt are notable exceptions and not the rule.
Harry generally only lets Hedwig out at night, which I suspect would be the legally advised practice with owls in muggle neighbourhoods - but at the same time, the Ministry didn't do anything about Hogwarts sending a parliament of owls to ensure Harry got his letter, which suggests they feel confident enough that it would be dismissed as an avian oddity and not some kind of supernatural.
Now, obviously magical birds, such as augureys and phoenixes? There probably would be limitations on keeping them in certain areas, but again, I think it's less of an explicit ban.
It's worth remembering that magical creatures are ranked in classification - lower ranked ones, such as crups and kneazles, can be kept as pets, as well as being easier to care for - flobberworms - or easy to deal with - gnomes, chizpurfles, etc.. Consequently I imagine that most creatures above a certain X-classification (and a few below, depending on specifics; I'll get to that in a second) require permission to keep - a licence to prove you know what you're doing, that you can keep it in a suitable habitat, that you can handle the creature properly, etc. - and that in applying for said license an individual marks down where they live (so they can be reached via floo or apparition in event of investigation) and where they mean to keep the creature (for inspection purposes). Thus, anyone trying to legally keep, say, a hippogriff in the middle of London (Sirius) is probably going to be sharply interrogated as to what they're thinking, denied the licence and told to relocate to the countryside if they want to keep large magical animals.
It's also worth noting that in creatures that look very like muggle animals - crups and kneazles - you have slightly different rules in play. Crups have to be well trained if someone plans on keeping them around muggles simply to prove that they won't attack muggles, as well as having their forked tail docked so they can safely pass as a regular Jack Russel. Kneazles can pass for an unusual breed of cat - and can safely breed with cats - but due to their independence and intelligence their owners do require a licence to keep or breed them.
I hope this helps!

im so sad to find out that flo may be racist like i don’t want to believe it but the no light no light video (that i haven’t watched) is preposterous and i would like to believe that it comes from unawareness but that video is really hard to defend
tw: blackface, racism
i want to open this dialogue by saying i’m not going to defend that video. anyone who follows me knows how much flo’s work means to me- as it does to many other people- but that doesn’t mean i’m unable to engage in criticism of that work. i also don’t think that, as a white woman, it’s my place to pass judgement or give a real answer to this issue. i can only present the information that i have in as unbiased a way i can and allow others to come to their own conclusion, but i like i opened this paragraph: i am not going to attempt to defend that video because it’s not defensible.
when that video came out i was honestly surprised and disappointed by it, and i still am. i remember in 2012 writing a paper on it for an art class and being unable to grapple with the racism in it, and as a result i stopped listening to fatm and participating in the fandom until hbhbhb came out, which i’ve heard a lot of people ended up doing as well. a lot of (other) fans will try and defend the video by saying the blackface in question is not actually blackface because the actor is actually painted green and wearing a blond wig: (continuing under the cut because quite frankly nobody needs to see this randomly on their dash) (EDIT: i tried to put this under the cut but when i tried to make an edit to this post it completely fucked up my formatting because this website is garbage)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
however, i think the green paint defence (which is disturbing prevalent among fans who ardently and aggressively try to defend this video) really blatantly ignores the obvious misuse of voodoo and the more troubling motif of pitting it as an “evil” against the extremely white, catholic “good”- to say nothing of the fact that voodoo is closely tied with catholicism anyway, and the reputation of it being some sort of “evil” is basically descending from slave owner’s propaganda.
one thing that could potentially clear this up is that the concept of the video was pitched to her by the directors, icelandic duo arni and kinski (x). the trademark of these directors is juxtaposing extremes in pseudo-campy glitterati and a kind of dark grittiness (check out the videos for of monster and men’s crystals or aurora’s i went to far for examples of this). however, that doesn’t change the fact that we can assume at any point she could have said no to the blackface or changed the voodoo motif. in delilah- a creation over which we know she exerted a lot of creative control- she seems to hone in on what i assume she was trying to achieve with no light no light by utilizing a literal devil and juxtaposing this image with the illuminated cross:
Tumblr media
but again, i don’t want that to be an excuse for what takes place in no light no light. as much as i admire flo’s artistry and writing i am also keenly aware that she is a woman of privilege- a lot of privilege, with a father who was involved in the music industry, a mother who is a professor at the university of london, and having attended several private schools*.
*(private school attendance is generally a harbinger of extreme class difference in british society, since successful brits overwhelming hail from some kind of private school. and on the subject of british culture, i would also venture to say that systemic racism in britain is still a deniable evil in british society, particularly towards visible minorities. as recently as 2018 the british government attempted to deport caribbean-born britons decades after they legally immigrated from commonwealth countries. anti-black sentiment is very much part of british culture, to say nothing of racisim towards other visible minorities.)
i’m going to be frank here and say that in 2011, racism as a systemic issue did not exist at the forefront of social consciousness the way it does today- people still said shit like “i don’t see colour!” and thought that made them civil rights activists. like any privileged person- or, really, if you want to get more specific, like any white person- i honestly do not think that it occurred to flo or anyone involved in the making of that video that it was racist, or else it was dismissed in the defence of “art”- which is not a defence, but it is a form of deep-rooted privilege. i know that when it was released someone- either flo or management on her behalf- gave some kind of statement saying they had no control over the script, but i currently can’t find a source for that.
(i debated including this because it reads like “i’m not racist, i have black friends!” but i will include it for posterity anyway with the caveat that it really doesn’t matter: the band itself is not 100% white- as of the high as hope era aku orraca-tetteh and dionne douglas are permanent members. make of that what you will. i’m not saying this because it makes up for anything else, it’s just part of the body of research i’ve come up with in the decade since no light no light came out and i started trying to make sense of it.)
people have also pointed out racism in the song royals by lorde, which i include simply as an example that racism is literally just an undeniable part of western culture. i’m a jew: i see my features parroted back me to me repeatedly as symbols of greed, deception, and evil, people have made threats against my life because i was a jew. (EDIT: i’m not comparing these experiences to something like blackface, which is obviously extremely pervasive, i’m just giving another example of how systemic racism exists and how it affects people.) racism is systemic. it is undeniable.
do i think flo is racist? honestly, no, not consciously, and if nothing else i deeply do not think it was done maliciously. do i think she was, and potentially still is, complicit of systemic racism and unable to be critical of her own compliance in it? absolutely. her later work has ended up being so different from ceremonials and from no light no light in particular, i would like to believe it was just ignorance, like you say.
i hope that i’ve handled this topic gracefully and without bias, and i also hope that the information here helps other people form their own, educated opinions. i don’t think we should ever participate blindly in something. we should always be critical of the media we consume and the people who make it, because that is how we became better people.

Anonymous asked: I always think of you as Kristin Scott Thomas’ character Fiona in Four Weddings and a Funeral as a beautiful woman who is scarily clever and classy. So with my upcoming wedding (next year!) and especially wedding music I thought of you. I really would appreciate your advice on Mendelssohn or Wagner as they seem to be the traditional choices of music to play at a traditional church wedding. My fiancé isn’t bothered what music we play but I can’t decide. Please do help as I value your unvarnished truth.
Thank you for the flattering words which while well intentioned are nevertheless entirely misplaced.
Tumblr media
Swiftly moving on, a sincere congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. I can only imagine how stressful it must be running around like a headless chicken trying to desperately organise everything. And desperate you certainly must be - perhaps even certifiably insane -  if you’re turning to me on Tumblr for advice!
I’m not married....yet ( oops! better get that caveat in before I am chastised by those who really know me)  but I am a wedding veteran - some would even say, a jaded one (thank you, mummy).
Tumblr media
Every season there is a string of wedding invitations that I can’t turn down and I feel obligated to attend. While great fun, one wedding starts to blur into another especially when the champagne starts to copiously flow. I have my own thoughts on the good, the bad, and the tacky about wedding etiquette but I don’t want to disappear down that rabbit hole. Instead let’s talk about Mendelssohn and Wagner.
Both music pieces have traditionally struck a chord (pardon the pun) and have become a staple of traditional weddings since time immemorial.
Mendelssohn's ‘Wedding March’ was originally composed in 1842. He got there first.
youtube
Wagner's ‘Bridal Chorus’ came later in 1848. The ‘Bridal Chorus’ became a popularised piece to play at weddings around Europe after it was most memorably used as the processional at the wedding of Victoria, the Princess Royal to Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. Nowadays - certainly in Britain and the US -  it is generally known as "Here Comes the Bride”.
youtube
I suppose the straight forward answer is that it doesn’t have to be Wagner vs. Mendelssohn. Why not both?  Wagner’s ‘Bridal Chorus’ can be used for the entrance processional of the bride walking down the aisle and the Mendelssohn ‘Wedding March’ for the recessional walk out of the church.
But you did say you wanted my ‘unvarnished truth’ so allow me the small luxury of an arm chair rant from the Coronavirus self-isolation of my Paris apartment.
Of the two I would definitely ditch the Wagner piece. Please don’t misunderstood me. I am a huge fan of Wagner’s music - like any true Wagnerian I have taken more than one pilgrimage to Beyreuth - but in this case playing Wagner’s music would show a frightful ignorance of the meaning behind the ‘Bridal Chorus’ piece.
I don’t know why more people haven’t picked up on this but I’ve always found it a terribly odd piece to play at a wedding especially as it originates from Wagner’s masterful opera, Lohengrin.
Wagner came upon the opera's inspiration around 1845 when he took interest in the legend of the Holy Grail through the poems of Wolfram von Eschenbach and the anonymous epic of Lohengrin. Composed by 1848, Lohengrin features "Bridal Chorus" as the prelude to a very short-lived, doomed marriage between Elsa and Lohengrin.
The famous ‘Bridal Chorus’ is lustily sung by women of the bridal party serenading Elsa to the bridal suite after the wedding in Act III. Elsa is not allowed to know her true knight’s true name and identity. But this is a romantic German opera and so of course Lohengrin is found out with dire consequences for all.  A sad Lohengrin ends up revealing that  he is in fact a knight of the Grail and son of King Parsifal, sent to protect an unjustly accused woman. The laws of the Holy Grail say that Knights of the Grail must remain anonymous. If their identity is revealed, they must return home. Lohengrin is lead back to the castle of the Holy Grail. Elsa is grief stricken at being left behind.  Poor Elsa (naturally) collapses and dies with a broken heart.
Charming.
To say it’s not the happiest of allusions of looking forward to a long life of wedded bliss would be an understatement.
However my objections against Wagner’s ‘Bridal Chorus’ goes beyond this. For one thing I find it rather too sombre - Oh dear God! Is marriage really like this?!
My main ire is that it overly used and therefore boring to listen to. And when one is bored the mind wanders.
In my case, without sounding malicious, my mind just drifts to whispering mischievous lyrics under my breath that go like, “here comes the bride, big fat and wide, here comes the groom, skinny as a broom.” Try as I might I can never get those words out of my silly mind whenever I hear the organ music playing “Here come’s the bride.” Not my finest hour.
Now Mendelssohn’s ‘Wedding March’ is different beast entirely. Beast being the operative word as we are dealing with Pagan deities.
Typically used in church wedding recessionals, the ‘Wedding March’ piece has sparked controversy due to its literary origins. The Prussian monarch Friedrich Wilhelm IV commissioned Mendelssohn to compose incidental music for many pieces that were based upon Greek mythology and tragedy in order to revive the genre of literature and performance. Among his commissions, in 1843 Mendelssohn composed a setting for William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream; the setting comprises twelve musical numbers and a finale. The plot of Shakespeare's play focuses on a pagan god and goddess and is filled with fairies, magic, and fantasy. Due to the piece's pagan, fantastic inspirations, some puritanical leaders and musicians - particularly in Roman Catholic churches - have found the piece to be inappropriate for a Christian religious ceremony. In its defence at least Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream was a comedy with a happy ending.
If you’re feeling traditional rather than puritanical then the joyous Mendelssohn ‘Wedding March’ might still be a great option either as a processional or recessional.
If you’re looking for options outside of either Wagner and Mendelssohn then it’s really a matter of exercising good taste alongside what suits the personal tone of your wedding.
Off the top of my head I keep coming back to Johann Sebastian Bach.
Bach’s many cantatas and fugues seem to tick all the boxes. In particular there is Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (derived from the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, "Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life”). There is also the Toccata and Fugue in D minor ‘Dorian’ BWV 538 and the Toccata and Fugue in F Major, BWV 540.  Arioso in A flat for solo piano from Cantata No. 156 "Ich steh`mit einem Fuss im Grabe is softly elegant. A particular favourite piece of mine is Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten, BWV 202, the ‘Wedding Cantata’. Of course many would point out that Bach’s Ave Maria would be perfect for a processional but I would think twice about that. As beautiful as the piece is it is about the Virgin Mary after all and you may invite unwanted speculation from your guests if you are (cough) chaste.
Trumpet Tune in D by Jeremiah Clarke is a little more festive. Or consider his more famous Trumpet Voluntary ‘The Prince of Denmark's March’.
Charles-Marie Widor  was a fine composer and his Toccata (from Symphony for Organ No. 5) is spiritually intense for traditional organ music.
Eugène Gigout's famous Grand Chœur Dialogué might appeal to you as well.
G.F. Handel’s Water Music Suite - Air has a graceful and calming tone. The Arrival of The Queen of Sheba (Solomon) HWV 67 is upbeat and was made for a processional.
Beethoven’s Für Elise is perfect to calm last minute panic attacks before you go up the aisle.
And how can one forget Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?
The Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, K. 525 or more commonly known as Eine kleine Nachtmusik KV. 525 - II. Romanze: Andante is a beautiful melody familiar to many and sets a soothing tone. Ave verum corpus, K.618 is profoundly spiritual and lifts your hearts up to the angels. ‘Alleluia’ from ‘Exsultate, jubilate’ is wonderful if you can get your hands on a competent soprano. If you are feeling more adventurous then the Spanish Wedding March from The Marriage of Figaro which might be to your taste.
Elgar’s Salut d'Amour, Op. 12 is soft, inviting and makes one feel you’re in some 19th Century romance novel set at court.
Elgar finished the piece in July 1888, when he was romantically involved with Caroline Alice Roberts, and he called it Liebesgruss ('Love's Greeting') because of Miss Roberts' fluency in German. When he returned home to London on 22 September from a holiday at the house of his friend Dr. Charles Buck, in Settle, he presented it to her as an engagement present. The dedication was in French: à Carice. 'Carice' was a combination of his wife's names Caroline Alice, and was the name to be given to their daughter born two years later.
Edvard Grieg’s Wedding Day at Troldhauen, Op. 65, no. 6 is magnificently playful.
Jean-Joseph Mouret’s Rondeau from Sinfonie de Fanfares is a beautiful Baroque piece. What’s a wedding without trumpets that could be heard all the way into the heavens?
Gluck’s Dance of the Blessed Spirits from his Orfeo et Euridice can be an elegant choice to do a recessional. Perfect for sensitive souls.
Gabriel Fauré’s Pavane, Op. 50 is sublime. I can never get tired of listening to it. Would make a worthy piece as a processional.
I would also throw into the mix Gaetano Donizetti’s ‘Una furtiva lagrima’ (A furtive tear) is the romanza from Act II of his delightful opera L'elisir d'amore.
It is sung by Nemorino (a tenor) when it appears that the love potion he bought to win the heart of his dream lady, Adina, works. Nemorino is in love with Adina, but she is not interested in a relationship with an innocent, rustic man. To win her heart, Nemorino buys a love potion with all the money he has in his pocket. That love potion is actually a cheap red wine sold by a traveling quack doctor, but when he sees Adina weeping, he knows that she has fallen in love with him, and he is sure that the "elixir" has worked. It may not fit your idea of a processional but I would try and use it some where in your wedding - perhaps at the reception.
I feel guilty about trashing on Wagner and Mendelssohn so I will leave you with two final thoughts. Reconsider Wagner’s opera Lohengrin. Forget the Bridal Chorus but instead listen to the chorus ‘Gesegnet soll sie schreiten’ in Act II. The various horns give this chorus a dreamlike quality and you feel like you are floating on air. Mendelssohn’s On Wings of Song is a powerful and poignant piano piece and quite suitable to play as your guests away your arrival in church.
I am sure there are other great classical music pieces that I have neglected to mention but others reading this might give their thoughts in the comments below.
If knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, then wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. So give careful and considered thought to what music you throw together into the mix as your church wedding processional and recessional.
Congratulations again and I hope it’s a special day for both of you and your families and friends.

Ah do Krishna and Bhishma in Hogwarts
this is so late i cant even say anything im so sorry but still i hope u like it!! i really enjoyed writing for it and surprisingly enjoy writing these two together more than i expected – i always make bhishma nicer and better than he is in canon but i also truly think that krishna brings out the best in him. thank you for the prompt!! please send more since i def have more time now that it is summer
1.
Bhishma does not watch the trial – like most of the Wizarding World, he listens to it broadcast on the radio, barred from the Wizengamot by his vow to pass the family seat through the blood of Satyavati. Bhishma does not watch when the boy Krishna is brought into court in chains and at the wandpoint of five aurors, does not watch when Kamsa stands from his seat at the head and accuses a child of treason, of exposing magic to muggles, of genocide secondhand – for that of course is what the Magical World apparently has to fear from their muggle counterparts.
“I disagree, Uncle.”
As one, the Wizarding World gasps. It is Him, then, this boy Krishna. The Chosen One, the fulfillment of a 20 year old prophecy that keeps Kamsa’s sister Devaki and her husband Vasudev falsely imprisoned to this day. It is Krishna who, 15 years ago, had the audacity to be born even inside the pit of human despair, whose disappearance from inside Azkaban had hastened the death of Wizarding democracy in the guise of Kamsa’s Emergency.
“You admit that you are their son?” Kamsa for once speaks for the entirety of Wizarding Britain. It is the question every person wants to ask, after years of Kamsa’s iron fist slowly strangling Magical Britain’s throat in pursuit of his predestined killer. “You admit that you want to kill me, the Minister for Magic.” Bhishma scoffs at the way Kamsa, claims democratic legitimacy even as a dictator.
There is a sigh that travels through the radio, deep and long, one that seems more suited for a man of Bhishma’s years and experience than Krishna’s sixteen. The whole of Magical Britain pauses for breath.
“I do,” Krishna says, voice calm at what every listener knows clearly to be a death sentence. “I am.”
Kamsa’s voice shifts to a register of glee. “This is treason!” No assembly could be complete without Kamsa’s favorite word. The punishment for actions against the Minister have grown more and more stringent in the last decade in wait for this moment, where Kamsa has set enough precedent to order an immediate execution. Neither Bhishma’s power nor his vows allow him to breach the doors of the Wizengamot. After all this time the Emergency will end like this, he thinks in sudden, overwhelming despair: the body of Devaki’s son cold on the ground, his death broadcast throughout Kamsa’s new kingdom.
But then, incredibly, over the radio Krishna begin to laugh – the sound grates against the tautness of Bhishma’s nerves for all that it is full of joy, of reckless abandon. It is only later that Bhishma will realize that the discomfort he felt at that moment was not discomfort at all – hope had been lost so long that he had forgotten what it felt like, swelling inside his chest, burning inside of his veins.
“You are untrained,” Bhishma hears Kamsa sneer, the last of Krishna’s laughter still echoing against the Wizengamot stone, “you are untrained, and with magic so low that you were not deemed worthy of a Hogwarts education. You cannot kill me.”
A gasp. “The chains,” someone shouts, “they’re gone!”
Members of the Wizengamot are not allowed their wands in session, and while Kamsa and his aurors are almost certainly armed, there is none amongst them that would banish the boy’s chains. Krishna has no wand, and what Kamsa said was true – a boy untrained, with so little magic that Hogwarts records did not deem him worthy of an invitation, could not have banished his chains.
And yet.
“You’re right,” Bhishma hears amidst the uproar, and then in the silence that follows he hears a slight rustle, the sound gentle enough that it could only be clothing shifting against skin.
“I am untrained,” Krishna says, tone as easy with this fact as if he were listing the color of his hair.
There is a click, and then Bhishma hears an explosion.
“And yet, Uncle,” Krishna says before the shock fades and the screams begin, “you are dead all the same.”
2.
There is a great furor in the aftermath of Kamsa’s assassination: the Wizarding World is unprepared for the death of its benign dictator, only more so when faced with its cause.
“I will take him,” Bhishma announces, blowing open the doors and standing carefully outside the Chamber. “The boy Krishna.” He blinks as members of the Wizengamot move so that Bhishma can have a clear view of the proceedings inside. Krishna, who he assumed would have been hurried out of the room instead sits cooly on the ground, hands busy with some sort of contraption. Bhishma does not speak of his brief childhood amongst Muggles, but he remembers something much larger, something that could not have been concealed under clothes.
“It is a gun,” the boy confirms, face blank as he refuses to meet the Wizengamot’s gaze. Kamsa’s bloody body cools on the ground only a few meters away. “Father purchased it after my uncle sent the Grindylows four years ago.”
Bhishma clenches his jaw. Kamsa’s obsession was renowned, but every new example of its consequences is cause for disgust– under the Emergency all dissent has been quelled as Kamsa combed both Magical and apparently Muggle Britain for those who stepped out of line, in seeming solidarity with Devaki’s mythic son.
Today’s trial had been triggered by a dementor attack on a Muggle hamlet, repelled, Kamsa claimed, without his official sanction by a sixteen-year-old boy without enough magic for a Hogwarts invitation. Or at least, that is what they had assumed.
“How did you repel them?” Bhishma hears from a member somewhere in the gaggle ahead. Whether they mean the grindylows or the dementors he does not know.
Krishna stands, neatly slipping the gun into his waistband. A moment passes where he gazes at the crowd in front of him, the most powerful of the British Wizarding population, people who together decide the present, who bend the arc of the future. Each person, later, will claim that in that moment Krishna was looking only at them, was laying bare their personal ambition, their excess, their very essence.
Bhishma standing tall behind the Wizengamot threshold feels small as he has not in more than a hundred years, suddenly a child once more clutching at his mother’s fingers inside the halls of the Kuru family home, waiting to be claimed by a father he had never known.
“He is one of you,” Ganga had told Shantanu, “so you must keep him safe.”
Bhishma locks eyes with Krishna and nods – he is not Shantanu, has no ties of blood, but the boy will be safe all the same. Krishna exhales, closes his eyes, brings his hands forward, and pulls.
The room gasps together as swirling spikes rise from the stone. Everyone is frozen at the sight, eyes glued to the floor Krishna mutates in perfectly deadly concentric circles. He has no wand.
“By Merlin,” someone whispers, the tones are familiar enough that Bhishma’s believes it to be Vyasa, court witness and the first son of Bhishma’s venerable stepmother, Lady Satyavati herself. The muttered oath is more accurate than he thinks he means. Bhishma swallows at a display of raw talent the types of which he had assumed no longer existed.
Krishna opens his eyes. As one, the Wizengamot steps back – only Bhishma tries to step forward, catching himself only at the end when his toes threaten to cross his self imposed boundary. A small, wry smile graces Krishna’s lips.
“Hogwarts it is, I suppose.”

The decision to release Vasudev and Devaki are released even before Kamsa’s body is taken away – that is an easy decision after all, taken by people racked with guilt at the plight of two individuals without even a magical core to sustain them locked in Azkaban for almost half their lifetimes. Vasudev, only son of the late Surasena whose family sat on the Wizengamot for generations, is a squib. Even worse is Devaki, half sister of the half-blood Kamsa, the first Muggle to know the eternal chill of the dementors outside her cell. That they even live should be considered extraordinary. That they managed to produce a child, that said child could grow despite it’s magicless mother’s physical malnourishment and mental torment, that the child was born and lived and left: this is what even the Magical World can only consider a miracle.
And yet, there is not a wizard alive who would consider the pair after such an ordeal fit guardians for any magical child, much less one of Krishna’s apparent abilities. Bhishma is the Headmaster of Hogwarts, and so any child of school-attending age comes under his jurisdiction. Bhishma also remains the Grand-sire of the Kurus, who now count Surasena’s daughter Pritha one of their own. His great-grand nephews may lawfully call Krishna Vaasudev “cousin,” and when Bhishma looks to the other families who might claim the same connection, Damagosha and Vridhasharman avert their eyes.
“A vow,” Vyasa calls out, shedding the guise of humble stenographer at this time of crisis. “I want you all to swear an Unbreakable Vow that you will never reveal what you just saw.” He glances at Bhishma, still standing outside of the room, and looks away, biting her lip in an now uncharacteristic show of emotion. He turns to Krishna.
Krishna shrugs, closing his eyes once more and pushes at the air above the floor. The spikes smooth, leaving the ground as it was before.
“It is May,” Bhishma says into the silence, as they all try to envision the shape of this new world. “I will take Krishna until September, when he will be enrolled as a fifth year at Hogwarts.”
The Wizengamot, unruly and contentious even at the best of times, assents.
The Kuru family home was once the pride of Wizarding Britain, teeming constantly with life and activity and culture. When Krishna, having been instructed in Floo usage, tumbles out of the Great Fireplace, it is almost like that again. The entire family, from Dhritarashtra to Kunti’s Sahadeva is gathered, voices echoing off of the famed ceiling Hogwarts’ Great Hall is said to have been based on. Bhishma clears his throat, and as one, they turn.
It has been years since Bhishma has been able to command the room like this, at least outside family feasts – but even those slowly dwindled as the children came and left Hogwarts. He would not claim enjoyment in this moment, but perhaps deep down there is something of satisfaction.
“This is Krishna,” he calls out, though from the looks on his family’s faces this is something they already know. “He will be staying with us for the summer from now on.”
“Actually,” Krishna says from behind Bhishma, “I have to go home.”
Bhishma turns on his heel. “What do you mean you need to go home?” It is a tone of voice that has quelled even Duryodhana at his most irascible, and yet Krishna only raises a brow. Bhishma presses on, ever aware of the studied stillness of his family behind, all trying to pretend that they are not in the room. “Do you even know what you have done? Kamsa had the backing of powerful men, crafted an auror force almost slavishly devoted to his every word. Do you think they won’t try to kill you if you set foot outside our door?”
Again, in the face of danger, Krishna only laughs. “My parents, Nanda and Yashoda, are Muggle. My entire village is. If I am in danger, then what are they, who have no knowledge of this world, no power to protect them from retribution.” Krishna purses his lips. “If you mean for me to live in this world can you guarantee me their safety, their well being, and their happiness until the day they die of natural causes?”
Bhishma cannot. “What will you do?”
Krishna swallows, looking uncertain, even lost for what Bhishma believes to be the first time since he set was dragged into his trial. “Mother does not understand, she never has. Everytime Kamsa sent another monster, she demanded we move, as if every place we lived in was cursed instead of it being me. I tried to tell her when they came, but she only cried and begged for me to leave it all and come home. The memories will haunt her, when I don’t.”
Bhishma, whose mother left him on Shantanu’s doorstep and told him to never look back, who still remembers her every day since, feels a wash of sympathy for what Krishna must do.
“Only them?” Bhishma does not question if Krishna knows how to erase his parents’ past – for one, memory erasure outside of Ministry authority is one of the High Crimes even in times of peace. Yet, to work with the Ministry in this case would only put those poor Muggles at risk. It is the nature of the Wizarding World, he knows, to forget inconvenient parts of people’s past: Bhishma who was once the half-blooded Devavrata now stands the venerable head of the Kuru clan. With his birth parents still alive, no one will question who raised Krishna Vaasudev. Bhishma will go to the Ministry himself and make sure the relevant documents are destroyed.
“And a girl as well,” Krishna says, lips turning of their own accord into something of a wistful, longing smile. “I asked her to come with me, but she refused.” Bhishma, whose easiest pledge was the one in which he forswore a wife, in that moment can only feel a voyeur.
His voice, when he speaks, is gruff. “You will be back in September?”
“Before that, even, if I can,” Krishna says, nodding at the silent Kauravas still gathered motionless in the Kuru Great Hall. “I look forward to meeting you all in the future.” His smile slips into something just slightly sad. “It will be nice to still have a family when I return.”
4.
For a single moment, Bhishma feels fear when Krishna is sorted into Slytherin. It is the house Kamsa had been sorted into, a half-blood almost dripping with charisma and eager to climb as high as the ladders would take him – and then to construct further rungs where they stopped. Is this to be the fate of the Wizarding World, to only exchange one tyrant for another?
It is a moment that shames him, he who is supposed to look at the four houses with only benign indifference. Yet he is not the only one who seems wary, a strained type of silence seeming to follow the boy whenever he enters the Great Hall at mealtimes, which is all Bhishma sees of his students at school. For weeks, everyone waits for the knut to drop, for Krishna to bend rooms to his will and gather supporters at his feet.
A month passes, and Krishna Vaasudev continues to eat alone. Every once in a while one of Drona’s Hufflepuffs tries to catch his eye when he enters, her face falling when she is ignored time and time again.
“Subhadra,” Drona mumbles, “Second year Muggle-born.” He frowns “No,” he says, seemingly in anticipation of Bhishma’s next question. “I don’t know why.”
Another fortnight, and Bhishma has almost convinced himself that what he saw before was an illusion, or perhaps a stroke of fate that overtook the young Krishna’s body. Perhaps the Chosen, when their prophecies are fulfilled, become one with the rest – what Bhishma recalls of Krishna’s smile, his triumphant laughter, has faded with Kamsa’s influence over Magical Britain. He thinks this, and then he stumbles upon Krishna laughing like Bhishma remembered with someone in an abandoned classroom.
“Grandsire!” Krishna’s companion rises and Bhishma is shocked to his core to recognized Arjuna, famously private, and almost notoriously sullen bounding to Bhishma with a smile Bhishma has not seen in years. Each of his great-grandchildren have made their peace with knowing that Bhishma at Hogwarts cannot be the Grandsire from their homes, but Arjuna, in particular, has always been scrupulous about maintaining the distance between student and teacher, Great-grandfather and favorite son. Bhishma in his surprise, and in something of a slight longing for affection from his favorite, allows himself an embrace.
“Arjuna,” Bhishma smiles, helpless at the sight of Arjuna’s grin, no matter the cause. “What are you doing here?” It is not a warning, or even truly a complaint – the pair is not out of bounds or our after hours, but it is curious to find Arjuna outside of his room when not in class, stranger still to see him in the company of someone not his brothers. It is almost extraordinary to know that Arjuna has been laughing.
Arjuna’s face smoothes into something that Bhishma struggles to name, until he realizes it is something like contentment, so alien to the character of his Arjuna, always taut with one anxiety or another.
“Krishna is teaching me how to cast a patronus.”
Bhishma raises an eyebrow, looking past Arjuna to the other boy who has risen but stands, ankles crossed, leaning against the wall in what must be carefully constructed insolence.
“A patronus is complex magic,” he hears himself say, and it is. But Krishna Vaasudev was brought to the Wizengamot for warding off the dementors, and he had never answered the Wizengamot’s question that first day. Krishna smiles, bypassing the question implied.
“Ask the Headmaster, I’m sure his answer will be the same as mine.”
Bhishma raises another eyebrow. “I can’t cast a corporeal patronus,” Arjuna says, his wry smile so different from his carefully controlled frustration when faced with an obstacle he cannot overcome through single-minded practice. “Krishna thinks it’s because my memory is too weak.”
Bhishma frowns. Normally, especially with children so young, he would attribute this to a lack of control over one’s magical core. But Arjuna has trained so long that he remains in school as a matter of formality, his control over his power already a thing approaching legend.
“I would agree,” Bhishma admits, “if only because I have seen you accomplish more complex spells with less training.”
Arjuna snorts, turning towards Krishna so that Bhishma, his headmaster, his beloved Grandsire can only see his back. “Like you said, I am an utterly miserable individual.”
Bhishma stiffens in anticipation: when Arjuna was only a child of prodigious talent and surprising will, his anger would fill the room. It is something that takes time and talent to decipher, but his magical aura so used to the weight of Arjuna’s iron control seems to seep into the air around him, swelling until the rooms feel like they are made of rainclouds, each on the verge of bursting. Arjuna, who is always so careful with his anger and measured with his words, has not spoken like this since he received his Hogwarts letter.
Krishna only rolls his eyes. “Is this what you’re like with all your friends? Besides, you seemed quite happy a few moments ago.”
When Bhishma concentrates, Arjuna’s aura is the same as it was before. His mind strays to Krishna’s words – does Arjuna have friends? Arjuna has brothers, cousins, and perhaps he even has Drona’s son Ashwathama. But Bhishma would call none of these a friend, and when he looks to his great-grand nephew, who looks faint at the thought, he feels a pang of regret for the training regiment he demanded of so young a child. Forced to outstrip his peers, and in the company of men so much older for so many years it is easy to see the boy’s self imposed isolation as fear, or awkwardness. Arjuna’s shoulders are newly stiff, and Bhishma can only thing that he must have been very lonely all these years, even if he never showed it.
“Oh,” Arjuna says, poleaxed. “Is that what we are?”
Bhishma slowly begins to step backward, but he is still in the room when Krishna’s face melts into something brimming with empathy. For that, Bhishma thinks, he could forgive almost anything. At the very least, he can begin to trust. “I’m certainly yours,” Krishna says, eyes locked with Arjuna, “but whether you want to be mine is up to you.”
“Yes,” Arjuna says, soft, disbelief warring desperately with hope. “I am.” It echoes to Bhishma like a vow. I am. I am. I am.
5.
Krishna Vaasudev, as told to Bhishma by his instructors, is a bright student. Eager to learn, with near perfect recall and an apparent childhood history of reading a Muggle-born neighbor’s old textbooks. The mystery of young Subhadra is thus solved: the Muggle-born sister of a Muggle-born Gryffindor graduate, Balarama, both of whom lived, until this May, in the village named on the records Bhishma destroyed. Bhishma thinks, and recalls Balarama towering at 17 followed by the sniping shadows of Bhima and Duryodhana, each desperate to learn Beating from the greatest talent Hogwarts has seen in generations.
“Krishna knows the theory,” every teacher repeats, “but it is the execution where he struggles.”
That’s only to be expected, they add, “considering the poor boy’s circumstances.”
Bhishma nods politely, and asks for an interview.
“Is there a reason,” he asks when the pleasantries have been disposed of, “that your teachers believe you to be only slightly more capable than a squib?”
Krishna, sipping at the tea he has been offered, puts down his cup to laugh. “Many, but I assume you have at least one theory that concerns you more than others.”
Bhishma grunts, taking a sip from his own cup. “I watched you transfigure the stone that makes up the foundation of one of the cores of Magical Britain with your bare hands. You should be able to change a teapot.”
Krishna hums, and it is as if somehow it is he, the sixteen-year-old, is in control of the conversation instead of Bhishma. “It is different, with a wand. I never had one before.”
It is a lie, but a very good one. There is just enough truth that it might even have worked if Bhishma himself was not one of the few capable of wandless casting.
“No,” he corrects, “the wand inherently acts as a focus. If it was difficult, your teachers would report that you were struggling with too much power, not too little.”
Krishna smiles: wide, and golden, and knowing. A test, then, instead of a mistake. “I had wondered if the rumors were true. I’m glad not to be as rare as the Wizengamot reactions made it seem.”
“I did not bring you to lie,” Bhishma says, but when he leans back in his chair he finds himself pressing his lips together to keep them from twisting up in response. Curious he thinks, that where he might have been enraged he is instead amused. He thinks of Arjuna, of how small he had sounded when he asked if he and Krishna were friends.
The patronus. “How does Arjuna know that you can cast a patronus?”
Finally, Krishna seems caught off guard. “Because it is Arjuna,” he says, voice slightly snappish, as if that were all the answer needed. And in a way, to Bhishma of all people, perhaps even to Bhishma alone, it is. “He needed my help.”
Krishna sighs, standing up. “I am not a threat, Headmaster, and if you need me to prove it I shall.” His gaze for once is hard, shoulders straight and eyes blazing. “Expecto Patronum.”
Krishna Vaasudev calls forth his guardian with the same tone someone might order a meal, and when Bhishma looks to Krishna’s hands neither is gripping a wand. His hands are slightly in front of his body, molded as if they caress the edges of something, as if they seek to shape life from an invisible lump of clay.
Where there was nothing, suddenly there is. Krishna Vaasudev’s patronus spreads its wings, taking one lap around Bhishma’s study before flying to perch on Krishna’s shoulder. Extraordinary.
“That is a phoenix,’ Bhishma says, staring at the bird with trepidation. With exultation. “Which means you lied – you are in fact the greatest threat I have ever seen.”

Plot Twist: IT IS A RACE THING
let's rip the bandaid off. it's a race thing. "oh no racism isn't an issue" shut the fuck up. seriously, im disappointed in my people so i'm going to address yall first. my melanated Kings and Queens; darlings what are yall doing? Why are we still taking this? Why are we subjecting ourselves to this kind of disrespect?
are we really just going to sit here and let history repeat itself? going to watch them shackle and kill us all again? what are you afraid of? our ancestors were scared. they were strong in their own way, we are stronger. they kept our culture alive, our roots. they sacrifice their freedom for ours, and look at this. look at us. playing into their game, letting them run the show. have we forgotten about the 1960s? when the civil rights movements picked up? yall forget Martin, Malcolm, Rosa?
if you are African American, meaning black (yes you mixed mfs are black, you can try to tread on the fence but im sorry to tell you, the day will come when you have to pick a side and what's worse is no matter what you pick the world already decided for you.) and born in america; your ancestors are slaves. you can't tell me, your blood, your heritage, your lineage doesn't deserve defending, protection.
we have a constitution. this doctrine is the "LAW OF THE LAND" (still we have individual state laws, hmm). in this document, the rights of people of color, and women were added into the admendments. people of color had to take citizenship tests, though they were never taught to read, and english wasn't even their first language. then there was the segregation. if you skin is pigmented, you are treated differently.
low income areas, "ghettos/hood" areas were designed for the communities to run like crabs in a bucket. they require dependency or rebellion. they isolated and rationed resources, discriminated and interfered with job security, then blamed the citizens of the community for their failures. provided the bare minimum (a bar they set) and do you know why the hate continued? because still we rose.
understand this : WE; ALL PEOPLE, ALL HUMAN BEINGS ARE EQUAL, HOWEVER WE ARE NOT THE SAME.
this is why the problem started. human were created in "Gods image" (any god you believe in we will indulge the religious conversation later.) layman's terms? we are all gods.
we are not the same kind of gods though. like ying and yang right? so there is light and dark. society told us we should be afraid of the dark, that bad things happen in the dark, that monsters hide there. what's funny is that life teaches us the opposite; teaches us that monsters can dress nice and wear smiles too. there's the story of Lucifer right? Lucifer is not the Devil. the Devil in my opinion is the "God" of evil. like there is good energy and there is bad energy. the universe is made up of both. so boom right? Lucifer was right hand to God and got big headed wanted to be him couldn't boom gets casted out takes a third of angels and boom hell and allat right? so let's just break it down for a second.
alright so first, B I B L E: basic instructions before leaving earth. the Bible is written in code, one, and two it is allegorical. (all melanated people truly do need to crack open a book and get to reading.) Jesus (Yahshua) is melanated, wooly hair bronze skin? come on now. so the idea they are selling is this all power white man is saving us all. truthfully, who cares what he look like if he's here to save our souls? you would think that would be the thought process, however; for some people the truth does not get them what they want so they opt against it. Good and light became associated with white. "wear all white when you feeling godly" its supposed to holy and clean right? pale faces became the face of faith. hasn't anyone realized how blinding light is? the closer you look the less you see. they guide your focus. the stars light the night sky yet we have all of this light pollution, it is simply a means of distraction. the wind talks, did you know that? the trees whisper. nature is beautiful and most of the world will never know.
they divided us by color. our skin isn't even black, however because they are pale, pasty, white; they made us their opposite. even in their classification of us they revealed the truth. you see, white is the absence of all color. it is empty. whereas, black is compromised of every color.
did you know there are two types of humans? yes seriously. homo sapiens and neanderthals. fun fact: neanderthals are structured more chimp like. homo sapiens were living in Africa albinism was prominent so there were a lot of melanated people without melanin, getting skin cancer and dying. neanderthals came about when homo sapiens migrated to Europe and Eurasia. they mated and began creating all the many races and ethnicities we have today.
melanated people are built structurally different than white people. we are naturally stronger, faster, thicker, humane, etc than they are. this is where the hate comes from.
"jealousy is just love and hate at the same time. - aubrey" pride and envy are dangerous things. when trying to compete, they were met with failure and it manifested hate instead of motivation. look at america. it is built entirely on the ideas of others, the hardwork and manual labor of others. those leading our country have done nothing for us. they simply continue taking all the credit.
white people left Britain, and called it "fleeing from religious persecution". the truth is they were fleeing from classism. they were in their element and they were minnows and not sharks. they decided to find a new pond to swim in. they did just that. the Natives were abused, and disregarded. they pretended to be civil and took damn near everything from them, all of their legacies and memories, their safety.
white people are lazy and greedy. this is why there are so many dividing markers in our life, labels, roles. there is a grave lack of family values for them. there is this morphed idea that the world is here for them, like we are all here to aid them. they reek of entitlement. like success, joy, love and prosperity are guaranteed to them just because. it is not on them all. just like melanated people can't help their environment, neither can they. the rude awakening always comes once you become unsheltered from actuality.
the cards are stacked against us from the jump. due to our enivornments, children grow up in broken homes, homeless, or jumping from home to home. single parents run themselves ragged, over stressed. children end up in the streets trying to take some of the weight off of their parents. the world just see thugs and gangsters though. menaces to society. when the real menace is society.
still we rise. still we smile. still we laugh and we love. and its so disheartening, that those are the things festering their hatred for us. no one is perfect. no one is the worst thing they have ever done either. growth is constant.
all we have to do is decide to be ourselves. decide to impact the world the best way YOU know how. white people have talents, a multitude of gifts. instead of trying to get rid of everyone else's imagination, what about losing the fear and choosing to dream yourself? and maybe asking for help, should you need it.
who you are, is who you've always been. i mean, the you, you were before the world told you who you had to be. who you are, has and will never be dependent on anything out of your control. people use the wrong things to assess the quality of a person. things like religious views, political views, music preference, sexuality. things that do not have shit to do with you. its all more division markers.
trust yourself. fuck what society says. what does society actually know? only what they are told. think about this: pyschological control is basically brainwashing. so boom. then you got your mind, your heart and your gut. that would be logic, emotion, and intuition. your emotion and your intuition are in the same section of your body. your brain however, is all isolated while being the storage container for everything you see experience etc in life. your brain is what gets conditioned. all the preconceived notions you have about things came from somewhere. where? we know what we know because they told us. how do we know its true? the thing about logic is, it makes sense. so when your mind isn't making sense yet your heart and gut in agreement, listen to yourself. they tell you think before you speak because their conditioned processor is in your head. always follow your heart.
people on both sides still to this day suggest segregation. like folks really do not believe we can cohabitate in a productive civil mutually benefical and prosperous way and that without segregation, civil war and/or genocide is in the future. here's the thing.  they had every opportunity, to ship folks back, or even kick us out. now folks could just start up and leaving, yet we don't. we tuck our tails and put up with it. why? i think its due to fear of being a foreigner in your true motherland. fear of not being accepted there either. i also think it's due to the way our ancestors were treated; how they allowed themselves to be treated.
so look: i'm a mutt. both sides of the feud, so i can formulate a well rounded argument; however i am black. when the world sees me and when i see me too. i am black and proud, in a world hell bent on making me believe my genes deem me inferior or unworthy to anyone. i say that to say, nothing will change until we stop fighting each other and start fighting for one another. they misused and abused us. chained and locked us away like animals. beat us like animals. and before they started more actively and carelessly attacking us out loud again, they got smart. gave us rights, gave us "homes" "communities" we were grateful. for this illusion of freedom. we must get uncomfortable with this false freedom. they treated us like animals, then tried to make us the villians, fearful we would retaliate, when all we ever wanted to do was live, joyously in harmony.
they cannot stop hating us, because we will never hate them. its a losing battle for them. still, if we don't stand up and fight we will lose in the end. fear and trauma also sparks compliance in them. bears are not violent creatures. but you don't poke a bear you know? melanated people are bears. currently acting like bears at the zoo. how long are we going to let them poke the bear?
melanated people need to unite. Dr. King tried peace and it worked for a little bit. it was a bandaid fix. now it's time to try Malcolm's approach.
Thanks for listening. -Almasi.

Gundam Sports Story Chapter 1
It is the year 0086 of the Universal Century. Nearly an entire century has passed since Earth began moving its burgeoning population into gigantic orbiting space colonies. A new home for mankind, where people are born and raised. And die. 5 years ago, the cluster of colonies furthest from the Earth, called Side 3, proclaimed itself the Duchy of Zeon and launched a war of independence against the Earth Federation. Initial fighting lasted over one month and saw both sides lose half their respective populations. People were horrified by the indescribable atrocities that had been committed in the name of independence. Eight months had passed since the rebellion began. They were at a stalemate. Then thanks to the brave men and women of the Earths Federation, Zeon was beaten back, their hold on the earth, and the colonies surrounding it, shrunk, and grew smaller every day. Until finally, the Archduke of Zeon, died in a surprise attack he was not aware of, leaving his own son Gihren Zabi in charge of the duchy. He too fell in battle. Within days after Gihrens death, an armistice was signed, and peace was established in the earths sphere. however. The weapons that won this war, the mobile suits, had proliferated far and wide, their powerful helium fusion engines were capable of great things, some retrofitted to power full factories, and ships that flew further and further out into the stars. However, as at the end of the last great war, when Britain and its allies had trained thousands of men to fly, there was suddenly a love of flying, now here in the universal century there too arose a love, a love of mobile suits. Thus sport leagues grew up near and far, as derelict mobile suits, and military surplus found their way onto the civilian market. Everything from racing, boxing, and even great feats of acrobatics soon found themselves being proformed by giant, metallic bodies.  One such league was the MSMMAA, the mobile suit mixed martial arts association. Every year, there is a great tournament where countries vie for glory, honor, and the right to claim that they can produce the best mobile suit pilots in the earths sphere.  This tournament is called the MSMMAA Earths Sphere Grand Prix.

A great Scramjet flies high above the clouds, a Japanese flag and the Canon logo emblazoned on its side. Inside we see a woman, her hair cut short, reddish brown in color, wearing a red sport jacket, with a Canon logo on the right chest pocket. Beside her is another woman, older, reading off statistics. “so last weeks match only netted us 76 million viewers, we can do better than that, and the sponsors are counting on us to pump those numbers up, we don’t need to worry about repair costs, Canons contract with us promises they will cover repairs, planet side transport, and basic salaries, but we are relying on gatoraid and Yamaha to pay for any hotel fees, colonial transport, and any increase in the staffs bottom line.” “okay, so what do you suggest we do Milly? We tried feigning issues with the suit and stalling for time until later in the night when more colonial viewers are watching last year, and neither tactic worked….and before you suggest it, I wont do what the EU team did to Maya last year, having her come out in some skimpy form fitting normal suit. Just embarrassing.” The woman in the Canon jacket sighed, taking a sip from a blue bottle of gatoraid as she did so.
“well whats something that makes you unique, maybe we could capitalize on it in battle, your Newtype abilities maybe? I know we usually don’t try to showcase those too much because you say it can be quite draining in combat, but perhaps?” Milly said jotting down the idea on her yellow office pad
“well…..its not the worst idea, stage some real close calls, pull out at the last second….it will be really exhausting but we only have a handful of matches left of qualifying, and then 2 weeks off before the tournament actually begins, for me to recover…Im not a huge fan of it long term, but maybe something like that could secure more viewers before then…not bad Milly” “well, Cat, that’s why you pay me the big bucks” Milly said as she folded her note pad up and walked out of that room of the Scramjet, as she walked through the door, Cats husband Ryu was just walking in. Ryu was a nice man, a bit younger than Cat, she had just turned 30 a month ago in March, and Ryu was just about to turn 27. He was well kept, a bit portly thanks to the lavish life style his wife had brought him these last few years, and soft spoken. “I just got Ohm to bed, he never wants to settle down when we’re on these things” he said as he sat beside her, grabbing her drink and taking a swig of it. “I swear to you, they change the flavoring or something to that every time we fly, it tastes so gross up here” he said handing it back to her. Cat lauged “its bitter, its just because we’re so high up and travelling so fast, the blood in our tounge isn’t where it usually is….stuff tastes different” she said taking another drink
“I bet you taste the same” Ryu joked leaning in to kiss her the world rushed by behind them
The scramjet was travelling at 95,000 feet, at nearly mach 4. They were flying home to Tonosho, a town in Kagawa Japan. Cat, short for Catalyst had emigrated to earth just after the war. She was born on Side 4’s Moore Colony, and was working as an accountant there when Zeons forces attacked. She said she didn’t remember how she survived, just that during the commotion a federation saberfish fighter jet crash landed near her, and the pilot blew the hatch before falling out of it, she doesn’t remember why but she jumped inside and sealed the hatch. She says that day is when she realized her abilities weren’t just good luck and good intuition like she had always believed. She felt someone elses movements in her head, she saw someone turning the ship back on, and piloting it out of the colony. She let the sensation take over, and she escaped the colony unscaithed. The image of the giant pink monoeye of the zakus haunted her nightmares for months after that. after piloting the ship out of side 4, she was picked up in the thunderbolt debris field by the battleship Halifax, and after they looked her over and listened to what she said happened, she was shipped back to jaburo. They did scans of her brain, and put her through days and days of psychological evaluations. They told her she was going to be conscripted into a prototype Newtype Combat Corps that the federation was putting together, along side the famous Operation V Gun Fighters who had lead the federation vanguard in so many battles during the war. Luckily for her, the week before she was to be shipped out, jaburo was attacked, and she fled in the chaos. She eventually found herself in Coqueiral, and fell in with another group of deserters, one of which was Ryu, who had been working as a data analyst for the federation, when after the siege of jaburo he was to be conscripted as a soldier as well, said they were going to put him in a Ball, and throw him at the enemy if need be. He wasn’t ready for that, and he ran, like so many others from the underground bunker.
So how did they both get here, flying on a corporate scramjet, millionaires, in a mobile suit fighting league? Well it all started in Japan in the summer of 0082
  Chapter 1 – the summer of 82
Catalyst and Ryu were able to take advantage of the chaos on earth that followed zeons surrender at A baeu qu and bribed their way onto an international flight to japan out of Peru. Some of Ryus family still lived there, those who hadn’t immigrated to Side 7 back in the 70s. His Aunt and Uncle were able to find them a small apartment in Tokyo. They gave them a tiny bit of money to get a start, but they were still deserters from the federation military, and even though the federation government had largely allowed most of the surviving countries on earth to try to rebuild by themselves if they wanted to, there still were federation military bases all over, and though the Republic of Japans government had tried its best to keep the federation out, they were still present here and there. So finding jobs was proving very difficult. Soon however, as the heat of the Japanese summer made itself known, Catalyst and Ryu found themselves pregnant, and the idea of trying to raise a child on the run, with no money, and no future, proved too much for them to bare.                Catalyst decided that she would go to the Japanese government and see if there was any way they could help them. She figured the worst they would do is threaten contact the federation and have them deported, at which point they would just start the running and hiding process again. While there they asked why she deported, the Japanese weren’t big fans of the federation, and didn’t want to give them over if there was no reason too. Handing over a pregnant woman to the federation to be executed for desertion wouldn’t sit well with any moral person. She explained she didn’t want her newtype gifts to be taken advantage of, she didn’t want to kill, she didn’t believe the zeon were totally wrong, that though their actions were vile, their goal of spacenoid independence was valiant, and that the actions of the federation were no better, though the Federation had never launched a colony at Australia like Zeon did, they did destroy dozens of side 3 colonies during the early days of the war, and during the final weeks after A beau qu, ultimately driving the Duchy out of their home on Munzo, and to a colony out by Mars known as Axial.
The man she spoke to, was a senator for the Tokyo arm of the  Social Democratic party, he had served in the 210th airborn division and fought in the battle of Newyork. He agreed with her that the actions he had seen during those days didn’t paint the federation or zeon in the best light, bombing their own people to prevent the zeon from capturing strategic targets, flooding the subways, to prevent their use as bomb shelters by the zeon, even though hundreds of thousands of people, of federation people were using them as bomb shelters when the flood waters came. He offered her an out. The Japanese government had recently signed onto the MSMMAA, and needed a pilot. The pilots who represent their countries bypass many federation laws, and cannot be persecuted by any government save their own. A rule put in place to prevent jailing a fighter to avoid the outcome of a match.  They didn’t have the financial resources of places like Brazil, the Greater European Union, China or the Kievan Federation, let alone sides that had been untouched by the war like side 1 or side 6. Japan needed a leg up, an ace up its sleeve, and a newtype with nothing left to lose seemed like just the ticket.
So she joined the Republic of Japans Mobile Suit Team. She signed on as the fighter for the Canon team, Canon, thanks to the backing of the government, were able to purchase a decent starter suit for her, a RGM-79GS GM Space Command Type. It had been used in the defense of side 6 during the tail end of the war and its right arm had been torn off by a Gelgoog. Canon was able to purchase replacement parts and have it shipped to japan for de-armament and modification per the MSMMAA regulations.
The MSMMAA had strict regulations for what could and could not compete in the tournaments, the suit had to be salvaged, or army surplus. Its VIN number must indicate it was produced before June 15th 0081 Earth Standard. The reactor in the suit, cannot exceed +200KW of the primary suits requirements for 1G standard operation thus an acguy is limited to a max of 2069kw and a 1st gen GM cannot exceed 1449kw. The primary suit is defined as a suit which makes up at least 30% of the parts of any one mobile suit, if a suit is made up of so much scrap that its parent suit cannot be determined it will be limited by the most common suit in its weight class.                All guns must be removed from the suit in such a way as to prevent them from ever functioning again, and beam weaponry must have their I field generator removed and capped.                Additionally, Minovski scrubbers must be put in place to prevent pollution of minovski particles on earth, the moon or any other body designated as a special combat location per MSMMAA guidelines.
The Gm commander arrived in Tokyo bay on july 15th of 0082 and Catalyst and Ryu were there to greet it, along with a team of 10 who in the coming months and years would become some of her best friends. There were her body guards Ballet and Fyo, former night club bouncers. Milly, Catalysts marketing liaison, Dyrik Masters, the head of mechanical engineering and fabrication, and his team of 5 Linos, Kai, Rita, Suzette and Sanchez, and lastly, Her coach Lt. Tenneth Jung, the federations Ace of Aces, who had left the force at the end of the war, and had decided to move into mobile suit combat training as it paid substantially better.  As soon as the GM was floated off its barge and onto the Samson mobile suit carrier, Dyrik and his team went to work looking over it. It turns out that who ever Canon hired out to replace the arm had done an awful job, and most of the joints were going to need replaced, and to fix any balancing issue with the other arm, they would have to replace the balancers on the other arm just to compensate, the legs were  in good shape, but the joints in them were in bad shape, hadn’t been oiled in at least a year, and the space use oils they had used hadn’t been switched out once coming earthside and were largely clogged with sand and salt, resulting on fairly heavy corrosion all around.
Upon getting the suit back to their headquarters, a mobile suit hanger that Canon had purchased, they strung the suit up to see just what all was going to need to be done. Tenneth had her and Ryu follow him to the pilot lift. And lifted all three of them right up to the cockpit of the GM.
“so tell me, Catalyst, do you have experience piloting mobile suits at all? From what I read of your record it seems like you’ve only flown saberfish and a few commercial planes here earthside.”                She nodded “it’s Cat by the way, only my parents and police call me catalyst” she leaned into the cockpit, a feeling of ice shot through her mind, as she felt hands moving around the cockpit, the pedals moving in tandem, the arms lifting and dropping, menus racing past.  “it shouldn’t matter too much, im a real quick learner, haven’t really ever had to read a manual or have someone show me how to do much of anything in life” she said as she lifted herself up over the railing to the pilot lift, and jumped into the cockpit, Ryu reaching out after her as she did so.                “ah yes, there was that in your notes too….very strong newtype abilities, rivalling that of the great Terra Stormrider the Gundam Ace and Char Aznable the red comet.” He said as he leaned across so that his upper body rested just above the main control panel “but newtype abilities can only get you so far, a lot of piloting these things is knowing what they can do, knowing when you can use the weight from one part to swing another ya know.” Cat nodded again as she flipped a few switches on the main control panel to turn the GM on, put into service mode so she could look over a few things while the mechanic team went about tearing into the GM’s guts and fixing the damage that the machine had sustained thus far in its life.                “I respect your point of view on Newtypes Mr. Jung, our abilities are hard to understand. The main abilities that I have been able to manifest are foreknowledge and a physical 6th sense, I can feel something is about to happen before it happens, and when I see something new, I can usually feel someone else moving through it, and learn how to operate it by following those sensations. I think you being here is how I can comprehend what all of this does. I probably should actually get a manual on how to operate all of this, probably isn’t going to be as easy as Book keeping.” She laughed as she slid her finger across the touch screen display on the main console, the GMs readout scrolled past, a lot of the sensors were reading null or error.                “well Cat, I’m sure we can find some old manual here for you, though I think this suit is going to end up pretty heavily tailored towards what you’re comfortable with before all said and done. This cockpit has to be modified if memory serves, padding and what not added…guess athletes need a bit more protection than some flyboy like yours truly.  Then, we needa figure out what sorta fighting style you’ll be wanting it to conform to, if youre wanting to fight with swords, axes, just the fists etc. MSMMAA doesn’t have ton of rules about what weapons can and cant be used as long as their temp doesn’t exceed 3000 degrees F, and aren’t beam or bullets….we’ll get you sorted out Cat, with your Newtype abilities, and my know how of these dang GM’s we’ll win you that championship belt.

allow me to discourse for a moment: The addition of Chevalier D'eon is actually fairly disrespectful in of itself because her whole servant-power gimmick is "She is a man dressed as a woman who passes as a woman dressed as a man, etc. etc. Gender, which is it, ooooooh!!". which, that's sums up the circumstances of her life, but ignores a really massive part of it, which is the fact that she openly embraced her gender identity as a woman for the rest of her life. And mostly the fact that her political power game was fucking INTENSE at the time since she fought during the Seven Years War. She was a spy for the French Court and went from Russia (as a woman) to France to England (sometimes as a woman?) and stayed in England a long time and was absolutely not doing her job as a spy in England (she was using military money to buy expensive wine. im ... same?). So King Louis XV at the time said "k, d'eon, you don't need to be in England anymore, you weren't really spying either...? get back here you're fired" and she said "No I like being a woman in England. Everyone treats me nice. Britain says I can be a private citizen. And also you fired me? Fuck you, test me and I'll expose your political secrets." And Louis XV was like "don't do it" and She Did It. And everyone was like "FUCK FUCK FUCK D'EON REALLY DID THAT." So then she became an INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL FIGURE and of course, people mocked her, and her gender became an international question & subject of ridicule for years. Her petition was granted, but she still had quite a few disgusting political cartoons drawn about her that you can still find today. Eventually Louis XV died and his son XVI was like "Uh, we don't need this shit going around a-about French secrets or whatever, you can come back" and she said "I want legal status as a woman. I am a woman. I want to fight as a woman and live as a woman". And eventually, that was granted, except every SINGLE time something was happening and the newly christened Lia Beaumont wanted to fight in a war or be political, everyone was like "Shut up Lia" and at one point they even locked her in a tower for 19 days on the condition that she stop asking to be a soldier and she'd be let out. Then she spent the rest of her life as a woman, insisting she was a woman, was born AFAB, and also going bankrupt because her pension ran out on account of all these damn French wars. Basically, she's one of the first trans women to have been given legal status as a woman in her country. And she had written her own philosophical writings about how gender is fluid etc. and that's huge! But! Given how we approach gender now, it's exceedingly clear that she was a transgender woman who wanted to be referred to as such and had her name changed to Lia Beaumont. She had her gender questioned for her for decades even until after she died. As a matter of fact, the autopsy genitalia drawing is literally accesible via the British Museum's online collection. I don't recommend going and looking up pictures of her junk because it's disrespectful. But is this respectful to her wishes? As a human being who actually lived through all this and was posthumously exposed? She did not spend an insignificant amount of time addressing herself, living as, and demanding respect as a woman. We already know that Nasu likes to screw around with gender in depictions of mythological characters (otherwise he wouldn't be famous) but he never specifically will state if anyone is any gender. The most we have in definitive terms is Astolfo, Enkidu, Da Vinci (which is ANOTHER can of discourse), and his interpretation of Chevaliere Lia Beaumont. To trans women today it's important to find representation when it's there. I find the treatment of Chevaliere Lia to be disrespectful to her wishes as a human being and especially posthumously. The jokes written about her gender in-game are reminders of both past and present doubts people have about transgender women and I get dysphoric-sick when I read about them. I'm nonbinary and a gender-mess but I would prefer people to respect D'eon as a trans woman specifically rather than as nonbinary because the circumstances of her life are too close to the struggles that modern trans women face in their lives than that of what I feel a lot of nonbinary experience can sum up to (a lot of it, I might add, has to do with the binary being a factor to begin with - Lia believed gender was fluid but also identified herself as a woman consistently rather than "both" or "neither"). Basically, if you wouldn't treat a trans woman in the news this way now-- why would you do it to one from the 19th century? ...aaaand that's why I only call her Chevaliére Lia/D'eon with that fun 'e' at the end to indicate her chosen gender. Out from the margins: meet the New Daughters of Africa writers
More than 25 years after her groundbreaking Daughters of Africa anthology, Margaret Busby reflects on the next generation of black women writers around the world
Time was when the perception of published writers was that all the women were white and all the blacks were men (to borrow the title of a key 1980s black feminist book). At best, there was a handful of black female writers Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou who were acknowledged by the literary establishment. This was the climate in which, more than 25 years ago, I compiled and published Daughters of Africa. It was critically acclaimed, but more significant has been the inspiration that 1992 anthology gave to a fresh generation of writers who form the core of its sequel, New Daughters of Africa.
The critic Juanita Cox told me: I received Daughters of Africa as a birthday gift from my father. Two things immediately struck me about the book. It was huge and it contained women like me. Even though Id been brought up in Nigeria, I had had very little exposure to black literature. At school the only black characters Id ever read about occupied the margins: figures like the Sedleys servant Sambo and the mixed-race heiress Miss Swartz in Thackerays Vanity Fair. Daughters of Africa introduced me to a huge number of writers Id never previously been aware of. And on a more personal level it made me realise that I was somehow valid. The anthology was peopled not just by women of pure African descent, but also women of mixed ancestry, and just like the women the book contained, I too could have a voice.
Ivorian Edwige-Rene Dro said: It was as if the daughters of Africa featured in that anthology were telling me, their daughter and grand-daughter, to bravely go forth and bridge the literary gap between francophone and anglophone Africa. Bermudian writer Angela Barry, meanwhile, spoke of her thrill at coming across a contributor whose father was from her island, allowing her to feel that I also was a daughter of Africa and that I too had something to say. Writer Phillippa Yaa de Villiers recalls: We were behind the bars of apartheid we South Africans had been cut off from the beauty and majesty of African thought traditions, and Daughters of Africa was among those works that replenished our starved minds.

New Daughters of Africa has been a truly collaborative venture: writers steered me in the direction of others whose work they admire. Altogether, more than 200 writers from more than 50 countries contributed work to the new anthology, from Margo Jefferson to Aybmi Adby, Malorie Blackman to Yrsa Daley-Ward. New Daughters of Africa begins with some important entries from the 18th and 19th centuries a reminder that later generations stand tall because of those who have gone before. Nana Asmau (17931863), a revered figure in northern Nigeria, spoke four languages and was an educated and independent Islamic woman whose life and work can be considered a precursor to modern feminism in Africa. Sarah Parker Remond (18151894), abolitionist, lecturer, suffragist, demonstrates many of the themes and serendipitous connections that characterise this anthology. Her letter of September 1866 to the London Daily News, in which she waxes eloquent on the reactionary movement against the coloured race in the United States, and castigates the social commentator Thomas Carlyle for having claims to the gratitude of all negro haters on both sides of the Atlantic, makes one wonder how she might have reacted to a tweet by Donald Trump. Elizabeth Keckley (18181907), her life bridging the 19th and the 20th centuries, describes first hand the trauma of enslavement in her autobiography Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House, published in 1868 exactly 100 years before the mould-breaking year that Delia Jarrett-Macauley refers to, when on university campuses from Paris to New York, students were protesting against the old order, against bureaucratic elites, against capitalism, sexism and racism and all forms of authoritarianism.
The year 1968 was blighted by the assassination of Martin Luther King in April. Later that month Enoch Powell gave his infamous Rivers of Blood speech, scaremongering about mass immigration to the UK. And it was in that year that Angela Cobbinah, the only black girl in her Cornish village, watched African American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raise their fists in a Black Power salute on the podium at the Mexico City Olympics. I felt an unfamiliar emotion, she writes. Call it connection or kinship, or the bubbling of a youthful rebelliousness.
Such connections, and bonds of kinship, actual as well as intuited, strengthen the links between contributors. There are the literal mother-daughter relationships, as with Josephine St Pierre Ruffin (18421924) and Florida Ruffin Ridley (18611943). It is pleasing to note the emergence as a writer of Yvonne Bailey-Smith, having raised and empowered three successful children (Zadie Smith and her brothers), to witness Attillah Springer following the path of her mother Eintou Pearl Springer, a contributor to Daughters of Africa, and to see Rebecca Walker, daughter of Alice Walker, achieve prominence in her own right.
In many ways 1992 seems much longer ago than a quarter century; yet, while much has changed, many challenges remain to the publication of work by women of African descent. Who imagined in 1992 that we would celebrate the first African American US president in 2008, and who could have predicted who would follow Barack Obama in the White House? Much more empowering to think of Michelle Obama, who in 2018 broke records with her memoir Becoming, selling 1.4m copies in its first week.
In 1992, Morrison had not yet been awarded the Nobel prize. Only the following year did she become the first black woman to win it. Many accomplishments were years away: Jackie Kay, the current Scottish makar and a contributor to the first anthology, had only just begun to receive recognition after the 1991 publication of her first book. So the authors within New Daughters of Africa that may still be unknown are as deserving of attention as the household names.
Custom, tradition, friendships, romance, sexuality, intersectional feminism, the politics of gender, race and identity all are explored, in ways that are surprising, angry, considered, joyful, heartrending. Taboo subjects are addressed head on, familiar dilemmas elicit fresh takes. How candid and engaging is Ted Hughes poetry prize-winner Jay Bernards I resist the urge to destroy my own records by reflecting on archives, how I use them, and what they have meant to me. How touching is Andaiyes recollection of her amity with Audre Lorde:
I do not remember when I wrote Audre but I did, and I remember that she answered immediately and sent me a copy of A Burst of Light with the inscription, Sister Survivor May these words be a bridge over that place where there are no words or where they are so difficult as to sound like a scream!
Unflinching stories Audre Lorde. Photograph: Robert Alexander/Getty Images
Lordes name recurs in other contributors work, including that of Edwidge Danticat, Sisonke Msimang and Panashe Chigumadzi, who writes:
It wasnt until I met the force of the unflinching stories of our mothers and grandmothers and aunts and sisters written by black women that I was compelled to find an answer to the question: what did it mean to be a black woman in my grandmothers time?
The different ways of connecting to an African heritage are an ever-present theme, as are stories of migration, and specifically Windrush stories, typified by the poignant writing of the late Andrea Levy, whose father was among those immigrants who sailed to Britain from the Caribbean on the Empire Windrush in 1948. Stories of mothers separated from offspring through transatlantic crossings, and the resultant psychological effects, inform many of the contributions.
How you find your identity in the course of growing up in Britain is a major thread, whether it is Simi Bedford describing the particular experience of being an African at boarding school in England shared by many (myself included) or Nah Dove making the journey from a childhood in West Africa.
So often London encapsulates the black British experience, with all its possibilities for racism, and much else besides. For Donu Kogbara, whose harrowing tale is of being kidnapped in her Nigerian homeland, London has become a sanctuary.
The book reveals works in progress, identities in transition, shapeshifting sensibilities, a delicious mash-up of expectations. Who knew that Nadifa Mohamed, one of Grantas best young British novelists in 2013, was also a fine poet? The chef Zoe Adjonyoh, from whom cookery writing might have been expected, delivers a memoir of her father that is indeed A Beautiful Story. Contributors are drawn to write about countries not theirs by birth: a Zimbabwean shines light on Antigua, Ghana has an impact on a writer from Trinidad.
Another link with Daughters of Africa is the image on the UK cover, by black British photographer Suzanne Roden, featuring her friend Sibusiso Nozipho Mavolwane (19582015). Busby herself exemplifies the international scope, historical trajectory and enduring female bonds represented by the 200-plus women in New Daughters of Africa. The third of five sisters, she was born in what was then Southern Rhodesia, lived in the former Gold Coast, attended boarding-school in Sussex, and from the 1980s worked in London. New Daughters of Africa pays tribute to her as well as to the many writers we have lost, most recently the talented Andrea Levy.
The aspirational mantra of inclusivity and diversity is increasingly routine, fashionable even, in todays publishing industry, but lasting change has yet to be achieved. Verna Wilkins, founder of the childrens imprint Tamarind Books, explains in her essay that she began hands-on work creating books in diverse classrooms in the belief that the process must start with children: They should see themselves as the authors, editors, designers, illustrators and publishers of the future.
New Daughters of Africa: An International Anthology of Writing by Women of African descent, edited by Margaret Busby, is published by Myriad. New Daughters of Africa is launched at Women of the World at Southbank Centre, London SE1, 8-9 March. southbankcentre.co.uk.

The IAAF are right to continue their stand for women’s sport… testosterone levels do matter
The IAAF are right to continue their position for women's sport …
By Martin Samuel – Sport for daily mail] Published: 22:31 BST, May 1, 2019 | There is no joy in Wednesday's decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Even through their own recognition there is not much justice either.
Nevertheless, it is good that testosterone levels must remain an essential determining factor in women's sport – reluctantly, yes. Are the IAAF right to continue with their position in women's sport? Yes, that too.
Ross Tucker is a sports scientist who was part of the team that Semenya had sent to represent her at CAS. She believed that her level of naturally produced testosterone could reduce Semenya's 800-meter time by seven seconds. If this is true, she would not have passed the heat at the 2016 Olympic Games, in which she was a gold medalist.

The IAAF are right to continue their position in women's sports testosterone matters
Tucker is used to make a case that robs Semenya of her natural self, is disproportionately unfair, punitive and harmful. However, that cannot be played in either way.
It may not be that testosterone is not such a dominant factor in women's athletic ability – which is also claimed in some circles – and that its reduction is the largest medium-distance competitor in the world to a comparative pleasure can make runner.
So testosterone matters. It's what you kicked when the best guys left the best girls behind on sports day. In primary school, the sexes compete right away, no problem. Then testosterone does its thing and there is divergence, of strength, endurance, speed.
One of its effects relates to muscle mass. When a man and a woman go to the gym and train equally, the testosterone level of the man allows him to build muscles that lie outside the woman. That is why women's sport needs protection.
<img id = "i-53ee5768b9494e75" src = "https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/05/01/22/12949106-0- The_28_year_old_South_African_athlete_is_a_two_time_Olympic_gold-a-12_1556744860536.jpg "height =" 421 "width =" 634 "alt =" Nobody can be extremely happy with the options that are now offered Semenya and other athletes "
90 A good teenage male club athlete would win an Olympic standard women's event. Take Woodford Green and Essex Ladies AC. It is well respected, although since 2012 it is not in the top three of the British Athletics League.
But the best times noted by boys in their age group of less than 17 years would be women's gold in the 2016 Olympic Games at 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m. If under 17 years old in 2015, Woodford & Canaan Solomon – last year's 10th best 800 meter runner in Great Britain – would have defeated Semenya's winning time in Rio with 3.26 seconds.
He would have been in for more than eight seconds. That is the importance of testosterone.
Semenya cannot compete with men, nor is her advantage the same, such as Michael Phelps & # 39; disproportionately long arms or Usain Bolts step. One is chemical, the other biomechanical. If Semenya simply had legs or lungs that had athletic performance, this would not be a problem.
Chemistry is different. Paula Radcliffe says that without injured, unscrupulous countries could start looking for Semenya's young women and lead them to a career in sport.

Her top-level career may be over unless she takes medication to lower testosterone levels
If this sounds far-fetched, consider the state-sponsored doping programs in Russia, or what the Stasi files about East Germany have been revealed. Sporting success is often used as an approval of a scheme. It is by no means inconceivable that women can be divorced in this way.
Increased testosterone is not a great athlete. Semenya has been on testosterone-reducing medicine before and won in Olympic gold. Even now, it could compete at 5,000m events without suppressors, because testosterone should not bear this benefit on the longest distances.
This is a mystery, since Semenya is in the male testosterone range – albeit at the low end – and, in Rio, Mo Farah wins 5,000m time from Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya with more than a minute and 20 seconds.
Semenya has issued a statement that she could appeal and continue the legal and scientific arguments. Sometimes we forget that in the heart of this are people who have done nothing wrong except to be born differently. But this is about maintaining the women's competition. Because if there is no benefit in testosterone, why can't athletes take it legally?

Can I get liability insurance if I do a roll over?
I'm currently financing a vehicle and I simply can't afford it anymore. I'm considering doing a trade in for a cheaper car. I would be trading in my car which has a higher value than the car. So there will still be a finance going on but it would be a rollover. Will the other technically be paid off meaning that I'd be able to get liability on it? I just need to lower my payments because it's too much to handle right now so even some ways that I can lower my payments or insurance would be nice.

Question about car insurance...?
Me and my partner are looking to buy a car. He is the only one who drives and so the insurance would be for him. We have noticed that all insurance policies ask whether you have any children under the age of 16. If the answer to this question is 'yes' it significantly increases the insurance quote. I am currently 15 weeks pregnant and so at the time we take out the policy we will not have any children. Would it be ok for us say no to the question about children as technically we wont have any? Thanks

How much will my car insurance go up?
Two weeks ago I rear ended a Ford F150. There was very little damage done to their truck, but my mazda protoge was declared totaled. No ambulance was called and the people in the truck acted just fine. The driver was a lady who I thought was just obese but it turns out from the police report that she was 9 months pregnant. I was not arrested or anything at this scene but I did get a ticket for careless driving by failing to yield. I am a 25 year old male btw and I was on my mom's insurance driving her car. We called the insurance and found out that she was monitored and the baby was ok. She was due next week, but the insurance hasn't heard about the delivery or anything. The lady, however is claiming neck and back injuries. Will my insurance go up more because of the accident AND her claims or just the accident itself? How will the insurances work out with 95 car accidents at one scene?
Just wonder because of news yesterday at California highway. I don't know about law in that state but what if it's like this in new york where I live. Ya know whoever fault will pay by their own insurance for repairs and injury for victims and a vehciles. Same for most state. How would 95 different insurance handle it? It might will have several lawsuits. With 95 cars, hard to say who started the accident and whatever if it's one person cause 95 altogther or all 95 is fault on it own. Some may not even have insurance. There would be 95 different drivers so it will be 95 different verison or story of what happening.""

What is the proper way to repaint a brand new car? Insurance question...?

There are divets in the paint in a lot of spots, which is better than the metal that was showing before, but not how I want it. My question is, shouldn't they have completely sanded down the areas of the car that needed to be repainted instead of just painting over the paint nicks? Please don't include comparison websites such as confused.com, because they don't really help. So far I've found co-operative car insurance company really good with a really good deal for young drivers. Thanks everyone in advance!""
When do I need to get insurance when purchasing a car?
I'm going shopping this weekend for a new(used) car. I have current insurance on my car right now. If I end up getting a car this weekend can I wait until Monday to get insurance, or do I have to do it that day? I'm in California by the way. I asked the loan officer and she said something about me having 10 days to get it, but I've been reading otherwise. Thanks!""

Okay my son is now 1 year old. He is on my parents insurance, we live with them, and my parents pretty much support him.(pay for all expenses).. Now my sons father wants to put him on his taxes. I know he just wants to get money to get him a new car. he also says he will get me a car too. but idk about that. Here is my thing i told him that he is automatically on my parents taxes, because he is on there insurance, so that would mean i would have to take aiden off of their insurance(Which means he wouldnt be on any insurance)he started yelling how stupid i am and just to sign paper, my question is is it true that because my parents have him on their insurance, he is on their taxes. What happens when fail to pay Car Insurance premium? Details Inside.?
Hello Friends, I know that failure to pay car insurance will lead to termination. What I basically want is to cancel the insurance, because I plan not to drive that car for few months to save on Insurance premium. My first question is do they allow termination for such reasons? and in case they don't allow that what would happen if I simply stop paying premium? But remember that I plan not to drive it for few months, so why I need insurance after all. What is the immediate consequence and what is the effect when I would like to drive that car again and want an insurance then? If it is of any relevance, my car is of New York. Please answer me. Final Host Country Report
Elizabeth Oriade
4/20/17
 Host Country: THAILAND
LOCATION & POPULATION:
It is no surprise that Thailand is one of the most visited countries in the World. Visits at high-quality hotels can be dirt cheap, the nightlife is unlike any other in the world, the white sand beaches offer crystal blue water, and the strikingly beautiful country is rich with culture. As you begin your sojourn, here are facts that will be useful to you on your journey.  Thailand is located in the continent of Asia, more specifically south-east Asia. Thailand is the 51st largest country in the world as it covers 510,890 square kilometers of land and 2.230 square kilometers of water. Thailand shares borders with four other countries: Burma, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Its neighboring countries are Laos (located to the north), Cambodia ( located to the south), and Myanmar ( located North-West).http://www.worldatlas.com/as/th/where-is-thailand.html
The country's current population is 68,268,763 composed of nearly 70 different ethnic groups. http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/thailand-population/
Thai is the official language spoken amongst the natives. However, there are 74 languages of Thai including the different dialects, ethnic specific groups, and various Chinese, If you fly into Thailand’s most famously visited cities such as Bangkok (capital) or Chiang Mai, natives who work there speak relatively good English. 94% speak Tai-Kadai languages with Thai form, 2% speak Austronesian language, another 2% speak an Austro-Asiatic language, 1% speak Tibeto-Burman languages, and finally 0.2% speak Hmong Meing. Standard Thai is based off of the dialect spoken in the Chao Phraya valley. The official currency of Thailand is Baht.

 THE ROYAL FAMILY
There is a monarchy in Thailand and the Chakri Dynasty is the current family that is seated on the throne. The former King of Thailand (King Bhumibol Adulyadej) passed away on the 13th of October, 2016. He played a crucial part in uniting Thailand. His people loved and respected him. His son (King Vajiralongkorn) took the throne after him, but is failing to follow in his father’s footsteps.
GOVERNMENT
Thailand is a constitutional monarchy to which the King serves the people of Thailand as the “HEAD OF STATE.” The successor of the king does not necessarily have to be a prince, she can be a princess; whoever is the first born gets to be next in line for the throne. Thailand recently adopted a new constitution in 1997 which is now in full effect. In order for bills to become laws, they have to be passed through the senate and the House of Representatives and then be approved by the king. The king has the right to approve/ reject bills. The executive branch of government is headed by the prime minister who is Prayut Chan-o-cha since 2014.

CULTURE/RELIGION/TRADITIONS:
It’s important to note that because Thailand shares its borders with Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia its culture is influenced by the Chinese, Indian traditions. However the country has customs that are solely from Thailand. The country is separated into four different regions, each region has its own unique culture. Norther Thailand is home to the Thai Highlands which is its natural mountainous regions and many natural forests/valleys. Northern Thailand shares its borders with Laos and Myanmar and its culture is influenced by the Burmese culture. Southern Thailand ( On the Malay peninsula) is home to the beautiful white sand beaches, it is the most popular region for tourists to visit. It’s tropical climate makes it home to fishermen and their communities. Northeastern Thailand is isolated by a vast mountain range. This is a Lao speaking region and because of its mountains it has an agricultural economy. Central Thailand is the main event, here you can find prominent cities such as Bangkok (capital). Central Thailand is the source of economic commerce and where Thailand produces all of its rice. .http://www.reachtoteachrecruiting.com/guides/thailand/culture-in-thailand/
Thailand’s culture is greatly influenced by the religion Buddhism. Roughly 93.6% of the population is Buddhist, making it the largest Buddhist population in the world. You will see Wats (Buddhist temples) everywhere you go, monks will also be walking around the streets. Even though the vast population of Thai people are Buddhist, religious tolerance is protected by the constitution in Thailand. This law guarantees religious freedom to all Thai people.

 VALUES/FAMILY/GENDER ROLES
In terms of values Thai people strive to uphold and maintain a respectful, non-confrontational, and overall positive attitude. Losing face and showing negative emotions in public is looked down upon, and telling a lie brings shame in Thai culture. This is why it’s called the “City Of Smiles” it is important for Thai people to smile no matter how upset they are. “Men pai rai” means all is well, a common saying in Thailand. The country takes a very neutral approach to communication because the only emotion you are expected to show is happiness. Thailand is a high- context culture because it is very reliant on communal and social harmony, building relationships is Thailand’s number one priority. Showing respect to your elders is a crucial value in Thailand. You always want to bow lower than the elder. Family is extremely important to Thai people. It is common that when a son or daughter gets married the extended family goes to live with the couple. Family owned businesses are huge in Thailand and remain an important part of the culture. As far as gender roles go Thailand has been typically dominated by males, however women are highly respected and there are more opportunities opening up for them to take part in the government, politics, medicine, and business.  If you want to greet a stranger the types of greeting can vary depending on the level of respect you are showing that individual. Saying “Wai” is the universal greeting. For instance a monk requires the highest level of respect. Put your hands together, relax your arms and bow so that your head reaches your thumbs. If you want to greet someone older than you such as your parents you will do the same thing but this time your thumbs will touch your nose. Finally if someone is at the same level (stage of life) as you, your thumb will touch your chin.

 SOCIAL CLASS:
Like many other avian cultures social hierarchy goes with age, occupation, and wealth. Elders and monks are considered the highest on the social ladder as well as older male or females with money. Children and farmers are considered to be the bottom of the social heap. The culture also has an obsession with fairer skin. The lighter your skin is they believe that you have a good job that does not involve you being in the sun. If you have darker skin they believe that you are a farmer, or a beggar. They do not pay a lot of attention to people with darker skin. It is said that skin whitening products can be found everywhere in Thailand. Class and status is also determined by family.

 THAI CUISINES :
While you’re in Thailand be sure to try out some of its amazing food. Thai cuisines are some of the best in the world and Thailand is home to several floating and street markets that sell ingredients to make these dishes. Tom Yum Goong is Thailand’s number 1 dish. It translates to spicy shrimp soup. It is made of many herbs and spices that give it its herbal kick. Seasoned shrimp are added to the soup. Som Tum is a spicy papaya salad that comes from Northeastern Thailand. It is a mixture of garlic, chili, green beans, cherry tomatoes, shredded papayas, and spices that locals cannot get enough of. Like any Asian culture rice is the most important meal. A typical Thai meal includes four seasonings: Sweet, sour, spicy, and salty which usually satisfies all your senses.  In families it is important to share meals together. Going out to eat with friends and family is seen as a critical aspect of your social life. Thai people are eager to share food and believe that eating alone is bad luck.

 RADIO/FILM/NEWSPAPER
Are you looking for thai movies to watch while abroad? Not to worry! Thailand has a major film industry called “the Cinema of Thailand!” It dates back to the early days of filmmaking, not long after it caught an interest with the royal family and businessmen who bought filmmaking equipment to Thailand. Since then Thailand’s new wave of movies have been a hit with great directors such as  Nonzee Nimibutr, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. A plethora of radio stations can also be found in Thailand as well. Thailand’s radio stations can range from Japanese style anime, to alternative rock, to pop, and country. It’s good to know that there is a country out there that doesn’t only rely on their cell phones for news. Thailand has many newspapers that will give you the inside scoop as to what is going on. The most commonly read amongst all is the Bangkok Post. This newspaper gives you the scoop on World business news, political news, prophecy watching, current events, and live radio online.

 DRESS CODE
When traveling to Thailand please be aware of your attire. Thailand is indeed hot, sunny, and humid but there are just some basic things you shouldn’t wear out on the streets. Here are some do’s and don’ts:
DO: Bring sun clothes. For females make sure they cover your shoulders, and are flowy, summer dresses, and fitted tops. For men simple T-shirts or polo’s that cover your shoulders and shorts will do fine.
DON’T: Wear revealing clothing, cut up clothing, sleeveless muscle shirts, or spaghetti strap shirts. DO NOT SHOW CLEAVAGE.
DON’T: Wear your bathing suit around. Thai people only reserve bathing suits for the beach and they think it’s tasteless when they see people walking around in Bikini’s.
DO: Wear whatever you want on your feet.
DON’T: Walk around barefoot.
Below is an expat's couple guide for what to wear to Thailand.
