so hot you're hurting my feelings - h.m.
a/n: this was a request from a lovely anon :) i had a lot of fun writing it so i hope you all love it! i'm still pretty new to writing explicit content so bear with me!! (i'm also obsessed with naming my fics after songs, this one is by caroline polachek and i feel like it fits the bill)
pairing: hope mikaelson x fem!heretic! reader
warnings: smut (18+), dirty talk, lots of praise including use of "good girl"
Tumblr media
"how the fuck did you do that?," y/n asks, exasperated. her girlfriend, hope, had just performed the most intricate spell she had ever seen.
"here, i'll teach you," hope responds, going through the spell again, step by step, explaining thoroughly to y/n.
"you're so cute when you get into explaining something, but i'm still so confused."
"come on, you're a tough girl. i'll go through it again. you do it with me this time."
so hope performed the spell again, slowly so y/n could follow suit.
the first few times y/n attempted the spell, she just couldn't get it quite right.
it was frustrating, sure, but hope was right. y/n was tough. she wasn't one to show much emotion outwardly.
but hope could read her well. they hadn't been dating long, but hope had put effort into learning her girlfriend's mannerisms.
"hey, it's okay. you're doing so good."
y/n can't help the warmth that starts in her stomach and only moves downwards at hope's words. hope's naturally sensual voice never helps.
"let's try one more time. ready?"
and they do. hope leads the way, performing the spell slowly at first but gaining speed at the final steps. y/n continues mirroring hope's actions, and it's clear that she's gotten the hang of it.
"lecutio," they both chant, as sparks generate in both of their hands.
"look at you go, y/n! i'm so proud of you. you did such a good job," hope praises, taking y/n's hand in her own.
the feeling in y/n's body returns stronger this time, and she can't help the furious blush that comes across her face. she finds herself hoping that her girlfriend couldn't tell how her words were affecting her.
y/n's favorite part of her week was the "history of magic" class she shared with hope. the pair would always sit side by side, both dilligently taking notes on the course content while also slyly exchanging looks of admiration once in a while.
"does anyone remember the year "icaeus" became officially recognized as a spell?," the instructor speaks, scanning the room for willing students prepared to answer his question.
y/n raises her hand, much to hope's enjoyment. she admires her girlfriend's academic confidence, especially because many people see her as guarded and overly intimidating.
"around 3000 B.C.," y/n answers, not even referencing her notes.
"that's correct, y/n. someone's been paying attention," the instructor says through a smile.
hope leans closer to y/n until she's just inches away from her face. "damn, my girlfriend is smart. great job, beautiful," she says, smiling mischievously.
y/n has to physically stifle a sinful noise, although she manages to play it off with a playful eyeroll directed at hope. confident that hope didn't notice her initial reaction, she continues listening to the lecture of the day.
a wickery match was in full swing, an even mix of witches, werewolves, and vampires all happily participating, including hope and y/n.
not only is y/n tough, but she is also quite strong. nobody else in the game could throw the ball quite as far as she could.
after being passed the ball by kaleb, y/n realized she only had one possible move; throw it all the way across the field to a completely unguarded mg.
she knows it's not going to be easy, but doesn't hesitate to use every muscle in her arm to get it as far as she can.
to everyone's shock, the ball reaches mg seemingly effortlessly.
"holy shit! y/l/n, that was amazing!," lizzie shouts, her enthusiasm for the game obvious.
embracing the attention, y/n graciously recieves high-fives from the fellow players.
hope wraps her arms around her from behind, squeezing her girlfriend in an affectionate hug.
"you did so good today, y/n. i'm so proud of you."
this time, y/n whines. she hopes its quiet enough that hope doesn't hear it, but with her werewolf hearing, she's sure she must have.
y/n lays in her bed, several pages deep in a new novel when she hears a knock at her door.
"come in!," she shouts, almost certain she won't be surprised by who is standing in the doorway.
"hey honey, whatcha reading?"
it's hope, closing the door behind her and plopping into bed alongside her girlfriend.
"just this new fantasy novel. you know, like castles and shit."
"sounds like fun, but i think i'm more interesting."
nodding in agreement, y/n puts a bookmark in her novel and puts it on her nightstand. she lays next to hope, gently putting her head on her chest.
"can i ask you a question?," hope speaks after a few seconds of silence.
"anything," y/n responds.
"is there anything i say that... you know, has a particular effect on you?"
"effect on me?"
"yeah, you know ... something i do that.. you like?"
"i don't know what you're talking about."
y/n is lying through her teeth, and they both know it.
"i just happened to notice, you know, a pattern of behavior."
"what kind of behavior?"
"just, you know, some blushing. extra blushing. maybe even some interesting noises."
"fuck, you heard that?"
"oh, so you do know what i'm talking about."
"no!"
hope knew y/n wouldn't stop denying her desire for praise, and she knew exactly how to force the truth out of her.
"here, let me try something," hope says, looking y/n directly in the eyes.
"okay?" y/n looks directly back, although she is confused by hope's response.
"you are such a good girl, y/n," hope slurs, her voice sultry.
before hope can even register what is happening, y/n's lips are on hers, passionately moving against them.
"so i guess i was right then, huh?," hope teases when the pair finally separates to breathe.
"shut up, mikaelson."
"lay down," hope responds, y/n happy to oblige.
"such a good girl you are, listening to me," hope teases, running her finger down y/n's still clothed torso.
"jesus hope, just take my clothes off already," y/n responds, growing impatient.
and hope does, stripping y/n naked in what feels like a matter of seconds.
"so beautiful, baby," hope coos, before pulling herself on top of y/n, straddling her.
hope's hands start to gently wander, grabbing hold of y/n anywhere she could.
"hope, please just touch me."
"i am touching you."
"you know what i mean."
"i really don't," hope continues to tease. "if you want something, you're gonna have to tell me, otherwise i'll just never know..."
"please just put your fingers inside me," y/n interrupts, her skin growing hot with desperation.
"ah, that's my good girl," hope responds, only adding to the pooling between y/n's legs.
hope lays between y/n's legs, admiring her naked form.
running a finger over y/n's inner thigh, hope studies the way her body responds, with gentle twitches and heavy breathing.
finally, hope gently pushes two fingers into y/n, still focusing on the way she responds.
y/n can't help but let out an obscene moan, finally receiving the feeling she'd been craving for so long.
hope adjusts to a steady pace, curling her fingers each time they're fully inside y/n's aching core.
"such a good girl, taking my fingers like this," hope praises, her voice raspy.
"fuck, hope. f-feels so good," y/n manages to respond, feeling the pleasure build in her stomach.
hope uses her thumb to rub tight circles on y/n's clit, enjoying the way her whines and moans only get louder.
she feels y/n start to squeeze around her fingers, knowing she's close.
"gonna cum for me, aren't you? so good baby," she coos, encouraging y/n to let go.
"god, hope...," y/n almost screams, giving up on holding back as her orgasm crashes over her in multiple waves.
hope talks her through her orgasm with gentle whispers of "that's it, beautiful. you did such a good job for me."
when y/n finally comes down from her high and catches her breath, hope pulls her back onto her chest to relax.
"so, a praise kink, huh?," hope jests, earning a gentle push from y/n.
a/n: it's 7am as i'm posting this 😭 it's already horny on this blog this early
(also why is the formatting on this so weird like some of it is double spaced and some not? how do i fix this help)

hi locky!!!♡ this might be really personal, but have you thought about SR reader being comforted by her boys after or during an anxiety stage? if you feel fine with it, of course🥺💕 it's just that your SR story is a comfort to me🌸
Tumblr media
HI HI i have seen you in my notifs enjoying SR and it's brought me lots of much joy!!!! i consider it a comfort series too, so i'm happy whenever i see it fulfills a similar role for others. coincidentally, i've thought about how anxiety might play a role in SR reader's life. she has a lot to be anxious about tbh hjrktme she doesn't want to take the time to process things and would much rather distract/keep herself busy... it's an element of her characterization i haven't explored enough!
[Scarlet Ribbons index]
Warning: Depiction of anxiety/panic attacks.
Tumblr media
Giorno
Giorno is checking you all over for injuries that aren't present, given the attack's psychological nature. Once he confirms there's nothing physically wrong, his mind goes back to the long nights he spent without his mother as a child. That level of visceral panic mimics what he's witnessing here. He does what he wishes he had a parent around to do for him — speaks to you in a low voice, reassures you that he's not going anywhere, that it's going to be okay. He'll gently remind you to breathe. Considering he's improvising on the spot, he does a good job. He'd have a lot of questions, ranging from how frequently this happens to if there's any way to circumvent it, but he'll hold his tongue until things settle down. His initial panic further reveals to him just how much he cares for you and your wellbeing.
Bruno
Bruno never loses his cool, but seeing you succumb to this paroxysm out of (seemingly) nowhere almost has him spiraling. He's known you the longest out of all the others, so he mentally derides himself for not catching onto this earlier. The cheeriness you exude masks anything you don't want others to see. He wants you to feel comfortable enough to tell him anything. Due to his protectiveness over you, he might insist on going to the hospital, so long as you aren't vehemently opposed. The powerlessness he feels watching you battle your anxiety is the worst part, he wants nothing more than to make it stop. He might be a bit pushy about getting you to explain what just happened if you aren't volunteering the information. It comes from a well-intentioned place, though.
Fugo
Fugo does surprisingly well considering how delicate the situation is. He excelled at academics, which naturally encompasses psychology as well. He probably understands what's happening here best. This knowledge doesn't translate seamlessly into reality — due to the tension in the air, his words come out more clipped than he intended — though he's still able to lead you through some steps to calm down. It's a touch clinical but it works. Afterward, he's digging through scientific journals and learning everything there is to learn about anxiety. He's especially interested in what may have caused it, so that you can avoid it repeating in the future. He's practically a licensed psychiatrist by the end of the week. Obtaining knowledge helps him feel more in control of an otherwise chaotic situation, so this is his way of making sense of things to help you better.
Mista
Mista snaps into a more serious version of himself immediately. He has excellent interpersonal skills, from your body language alone, he could tell something was wrong before the panic attack actually occurred. It helps that he also knows you like the back of his hand. If this is the first time he's been around for this, he'll use his intuition to infer the best way to help. Should you seem receptive to it, he'll talk to you in a low voice, serving as a grounding figure amidst the tumult. He has this infectious optimism that you can't help but be soothed by. When you're feeling up to it, he'll ask if you wouldn't mind telling him what that's about. He definitely doesn't want you to have to go through it again.
Narancia
Narancia, bless his heart, initially makes it kinda worse. He isn't exactly a mental health aficionado. Since he doesn't see any clear cause and effect, he'll mistake it for a Stand attack. He'll summon Aerosmith and promise to take care of whoever is behind this. When you insist it isn't a Stand attack, he'll start fussing over you, asking how he's supposed to help. He's horrified by the thought of anything happening to you, his best friend whom he loves dearly. Until you're feeling up to explaining what anxiety is, he sticks to your side like glue. If this happens again, he'll do a lot better. It's just the first time where he's at a loss on what to do.
Abbacchio
Abbacchio is at an absolute loss but manages to maintain a composed façade. He might not understand the specifics of what's happening, but he knows he should take you to a private area. It's rather jarring to see you go from your jovial disposition to being overwhelmed by some force he can't make sense of. It twists his heart and churns his stomach. He'll wonder if you've silently been dealing with this all along. He isn't the best at waxing poetic, but he'll be there until it subsides. He quietly apologizes for not being of much help in the moment. When you tell him that just having him present was all you could've asked for, he honestly feels somewhat emotional. He will sit there for hours and listen to you talk about it, if that's what you want.

In my own writing I struggle with giving each character their own voice (speech patterns, phrases they use) and in Dialtown each character is super specific. Are there certain things you had to remember for each character, other than Oliver using his fucked up slang lmao.
When I write my characters, I can usually hear them in my head to some extent. Like, I can picture how it would feel to talk to them, or if I tuned out while one of my characters was chattering away about something, I can kinda hear the unintelligible static.
If you want me to write a lil essay pointing out differences in how the characters in the main cast are written, alright, I'll bite:
Verbal ticks help differentiate characters for me. We all know about Randy's stuttering, but there's more than just that in how the characters' sentence structures affect how we see their speech.
Karen's sentences tend to end in periods, if they aren't questions or if her voice isn't raised. Almost all of Randy's sentences, meanwhile, end with ellipses (…) or hyphens to indicate he trailed off/stuttered his way through the ending. Oliver does occasionally end sentences with ellipses or hyphens, but defaults to periods and often exclamation marks, as he's pretty excitable. This alone shows the difference in tone/confidence that the main 3 have without changing any words.
The characters all use slightly different terminology when they speak. Oliver's fucked up slang is only a part of it, he also uses theatrical language, often framing sentences creatively and in a way that absurdly beefs up the word count of his dialogue. He uses fairly atypical adjectives, surrealist language. He refers to himself in the third person sometimes. He uses imperfect tenses in order to make his sentences longer/less uniform. I'll give an example, from when Gingi asks Oliver if film reel movie projection is magic:
"I consider myself a sorcerer of FILTH, perhaps (an apt conjurer of muck/grime), but this artform isn't QUITE witchcraft NOR warlockery, I'm 'fraid."
Okay, putting aside the bizarre content of the sentence itself, one curious thing to note is that the whole sentence is full of words that don't convey any additional information. Conjurer is a synonym of sorcerer and he uses two synonyms for dirty AFTER already using filth. Guy loves theatrical language and will structure his sentence to make sentences much longer, so he can fit more of it in. But, then ends the sentence by taking a whole syllable away from the word 'afraid' and abbreviation it, like speaking with an accent. Oliver's sentence pacing is completely different to other people because of the volume of odd language he uses. In the context of the game, he's also drawing the player in by creating a pause, as the next line is:
"No, the actual "beaming" work comes from our dear old movie projector, and possibly my greatest love: Big Bertha!"
He likes Big Bertha and enjoys talking about her, and he tries to draw Gingi in and get Gingi invested in this thing by drawing out the introduction and forcing Gingi to wait for him to introduce Bertha in suspense. Randy volunteers info as if he thinks you're gonna hit him, unable to stand silence and hence, the sound of his own thoughts.
To contrast, Karen uses direct language, mainly. I wouldn't call her speech robotic, as most of the time she can retract language, she does (I am->I'm, I would->I'd, etc) but usually she uses direct tenses, and takes fewer words to say what she needs to compared to, say, Oliver. Generally, the words she uses tonally matches what she says. Weirder, less usual words come out when Karen is reacting to something she finds weird/illogical.
Norm's speech could be described as someone with a heavy accent who's well read, but is slightly insecure about being well-read. He uses words like 'y'all', 'ain't', 'reckon', retracts words like 'to' as 't'', but if you pay attention, he occasionally uses technical, academic language that doesn't match the aesthetics of the rest of his language. You can take the boy away from book learnin', but ya can't take the book learning outta the boy.
Billy is aggressive and generally, his language is designed to make the player feel bad in some way. Generally speaking, he's either insulting you, mocking your knowledge of the world, pointing out something you said as stupid, or is using words like 'lmayo'. Billy doesn't care much about the player, but is interested enough to talk to the player as a means to offend/demean them until you run out of things to say or leave, frustrated, which is Billy's goal. If you view what he says in this lens, you'll see this accurately describes how he speaks to you.
Billy uses surrealist language occasionally to seem more hellish and inhuman, but often, uses fewer words than other main characters. Subconsciously, it's to convey that Billy doesn't respect you enough to use more words. When Billy DOES use big words, it's exclusively on purpose and exclusively to subconsciously belittle Gingi, like when he refers to Gingi as a 'amphibian moron'.
God, similar to Billy, tends to use fewer words than most other characters. He often gives formulaic dialogue responses. There's no psychological play here, God just genuinely doesn't care how Gingi or anyone else sees him or if his tone/phrasing is improper because he knows how little respect people in Dialtown have for him anyway and embraces it.
Sometimes though, he does use uncommon synonyms for words, a byproduct of having lived so long through other times/eras. The references he makes are much the same. Fucker occasionally references ancient Greek figures and expects the references to land, as if everyone present somehow would've once somehow met these ancient fellows.
Mingus uses formal, impersonal language, and tends to use uncommon synonyms for words. The purpose of this is to subconsciously belittle the person she's speaking to and affirm her social class.
While she'll skirt past a commonly used word for a rare synonym in order to make her speech sound more dignified, she rarely leaves out pronouns in sentences. The reason for this is because most of her speech has an indignant tone. She's complaining about some shoddily done action or what she feels is a lack of service. So, the last thing she'd want to do is miss the opportunity to rant directly about her grievances in direct terms. Creative phrasing isn't used to replace pronouns but used to more elaborately phrase the error someone has committed to further emphasize her dismay. EG:
"You created the entire universe, and yet, the ability to perform a simple CARTWHEEL eludes you?"
Instead of saying "can", she says "the ability", instead of 'can't do', it's 'elude'. Hell, instead of 'do', it's 'perform'. But, both at the beginning and end of the sentence, she doesn't think to phrase the sentence in a way to avoid repeating the word 'you'. Like I said, the flourishes are just to drive the point home that she sees herself as above the person she's speaking to and to reaffirm how absurd she sees the limitations of others.
How Jerry talks is basically the conflict within a well educated but defeated man whose brain is decaying from years of substandard life. His speech, like his brain, is in conflict. His job dictates that he should always use terms of respect, like sir/ma'am, but he curses too. When he raises his voice, his sentences are often short and abrupt, but the words he uses tend to be elaborate and rarely used. Jerry is educated, has opinions on stuff. His mind is wasted at his job, and even through his defeated cynicism, you can subtly see that Jerry wants a better life through the words he uses.
Jerry's speech patterns are actually quite close to the narrator, and this is intentional, actually. The two characters share a few things in common that affect how they speak. Namely: Having to deal with Gingi's antics. There's almost a tired parental tone to both.
I could ramble for hours (please don't let me do this), but those are some examples of core character writing differences, namely in how I try to use language. Incorporating subtleties into the dialogue is good for separating characters and when you plan these out so that these placed differences are specific to traits that the characters have, your work'll feel more alive and be more satisfying to analyze later. Overthink. Overthink overthink overthink. It works, at least for me.

I'm having a lot of feelings tonight about the ways in which I was very explicitly raised in (radfem-y) feminist spaces and told "you can be whatever you want to be"... until I was a man. Until I saw beauty in masculinity. Until I thought being hairy and sweaty and having a low voice was something wonderful and desirable not just in a partner but in myself. Until I changed my pronouns and became a gender traitor despite nothing else about who I am as a person changing.
There's a weird kind of hurt growing up in a "progressive" home where it feels like your mother is gunning for you to be a lesbian like your butch cousin before you came out as a gender traitor but the second your sister comes out and says she's a dyke there's a problem because having two queer children can't be possible.
There's an awful kind of hurt continuing to pursue activism because I grew up on protest music I don't think my parents ever actually internalized. I think it's an autism thing for myself, really. Because it's something that feels hypocritical to me in a way I feel boils down to the way I conceptualize justice and morality, which I view very autistically. It lead me to wanting to pursue academic studies in sociology, to learn how systems of oppression work, to learn the language used to help people describe their experiences in the world and in turn learn about them. And then? I was shoved out. Because a gender traitor can't understand and if "he" does then she's really just doing this all for attention and she should really just admit she's actually still a young woman. She's just one of the girls and she should accept that. If "he" wants to be a "real man" why does "he" care so much? That's so... predatory. That's so unsafe to be around.
It's just. Sad. And I'm sad. My body didn't go away when I came out. My history didn't go away when I came out. I know that some people experience gender in a very separated way but fuck. I was a girl, and I was a man, and now they live together inside of me and I am both my past and my present. I know how I am most comfortable but my bones hold years of mistreatment based on the ways others forcibly gendered me on the basis of my physical sex. I am not cis passing in any capacity and I hold the ways I am still harmed by the forcible gendering of my body close to my chest. And I don't expect everyone else to feel that way about their own identity, that's just how I feel about my own sense of self. And I know some other people do feel similarly. And I just. Want To Have The Words For It.
I just want to have language that's been denied to me and others like myself. That's why I care about the term transandrophobia. Only those who seek to harm marginalized groups benefit from those groups not being able to speak for themselves by having a lack of language for their experiences.

Being bullied for knowing another language is a real thing. Think of all the animosity people feel towards the Bachelor for saying, what, 3-4 phrases in Latin.
Storytime.
Every Russian feminist remembers how Nixelpixel was bullied and I presume is still being bullied. It really was Russian gamer gate and Nixelpixel is Russian Anita Sarkeesian. Both were tormented for being feminists, that's the base of it. But Anita was also a target of antisemitism and anti Armenian rhetoric. Nixelpixel is a skinny white Russian, very little to add on top. So she was bullied for speaking English.
She is bilingual and as many of us bilinguals do, she mixed languages in her speech in the way that I do and feels natural to me and all my friends.
The Russian Internet was not having it, not even a little bit. Unanimous consensus was that she is doing it only to appear smarter.
For English speaking people in the first world it maybe hard to comprehend. English is just the default language. But remember how conservatives react when some nonbinary teenager makes a video about cultural appropriation or any other academic topic and suddenly they all feel like they don't know certain words?! And they have to google words to understand someone's complex speech?! This is unheard of! And what right does this "beneath me in social hierarchy" have to know something that I don't?!! Outrageous!
The core of this emotion is envy. Knowing English good enough so you become legitimately bilingual is a privilege in Russia. Knowing a lot of stuff about society and understanding complex topics is a privilege. You have time and money for education. Or you got lucky and had educated parents. Envy becomes even more venomous when the person you envy is supposed to be beneath you.
Like, I don't really get it. But that's how I make sense of other people hating me all my life for being... eloquent. As if they anticipate me being hostile because they are less eloquent than me and attack me preventively.
This is made worse by me being autistic and forgetting all the time that you must make all humble song and dance around your every achievement so not to trigger neurotypical rage. I genuinely forget which words are too smart and which are fine. The idea that I'm trying to sound smarter on purpose is so laughable to me.
Returning to the Bachelor. He's a doctor, he studied at university. Do you hate him when he uses medical jargon? What's the deal with Latin then? They study Latin in med school. It is a mandatory course. For me this trait of his always meant to signify that he took his education very seriously and knows everything that he studied very well.
When people just assume that someone, a character or a person, does anything just to look smart I'm a little triggered. I know I'm not safe in that company.
And I know that all of it is incredibly whiny. Knowledge is a privilege, as I said. Dankovsky is a privileged man. I'm not blaming those who feel uncomfortable around learned people. I'm not blaming those who are not into such characters.
But Dankovsky is not gatekeeping knowledge though! He looks like a man who would nerd out about Latin to you, if you only asked. He gives his degree away for free! It's not the same as rich people hoarding wealth. He's eager to share his knowledge! But now he is a coloniser imposing his western ideas onto indigenous society.
Oh well, damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Maybe it's not envy then? Maybe they want a smart sounding person but the one who would agree with them all the time? Like, Peterson uses a lot of long words and they love him. Hm...

;R1999 MATILDA - Relationship Headcanons
Tumblr media
Compilation of headcanons about Matilda in a romantic relationship.
Tumblr media
(through the most robotic, crunchy voiceover ever) got it, please come right up to the window for your order
sorry this post was shorter than usual! i have so many thoughts about matilda but they're mostly for just character analysis rather than HCs
Tumblr media
Matilda is very young, so relationships are a brand new experience for her, lacking all the seriousness and weight of a proper relationship, while being full of wonder and excitement.
One only needs to look at the way she interacts with Sonetto to figure out how she'd act with any other crush of hers. Matilda, whose medium is "competitiveness", sees crushes and love as a game - whoever admits their feelings first, loses. And she's the great Matilda, she can't possibly lose to something so trivial!
I'd argue that there's some depth about this aspect of her, outside of her arcanum and her medium. Her 01 Story gives insight into her competitive nature: from young age, she understood that she had to earn her parents' affection through academic achievements or any other worthwhile merits. And in the main story, we see how she willingly joins the Foundation, how most of her voicelines are about becoming the best at whatever role she sets her sights to, etc.
So with this in mind, whenever Matilda speaks about making Sonetto her assistant, she's truly talking about earning a position of authority and power through her hard work, all to justify receiving affection and adoration from those she cares for. Because this is the only way she knows how to be loved.
I think this would continue to happen, regardless of who she's crushing on, and the game already gives so much info as to how she'd act while crushing on someone, so I'll focus on other headcanons instead!
It takes her a long time to stop acting so flustered.
Because of how confident and one-track minded Matilda is, I genuinely don't know if she's aware of how she tends to come across whenever she trails after the object of her affections like a lost puppy, unconsciously glaring at you from afar because she's trying so hard to prove herself in front of you and what not.
So she would need a lot of time to get over that initial wave of emotions and nervousness, until she can confront you without stuttering, fumbling over her words or just running away.
Once she does, Matilda will become bolder and directly challenge you - her one and only rival! - to all these little things. I imagine it's a very healthy and wholesome rivalry, one that allows the two of you to be kids and stop worrying about the "Storm" for a few hours at least.
I like to think that this rivalry would also help in making Matilda grow used to the idea of losing, since there's no horrible repercussions for doing so.
If she loses to you whenever you two race to see who can reach the library first, to see who can finish a book faster, who can recite the most complex incantation and so on and so forth, well... She can just try again! There's always a next time! There are no downsides to losing, because even though she's lost time and time again, you're still there smiling and laughing along with her. Competitiveness will still remain a big part of who she is, but it loses that edge from before - she's not fighting to be worthy of people's attention.
Eventually, as she grows more comfortable around you, she'll promote you from assistant and/or rival to her closest friend and partner in crime. Matilda starts to include you in her plans for world domination, treating you as her equal.
Matilda is extremely supportive. She loves to be helpful when she's not being competitive.
I'm 100% certain that Matilda's first and foremost love language is acts of service - just take a look at her voicelines. Even though her words are coated with this air of superiority and that slightly condescending and gloating filter, Matilda has many, many quotes that are all about her offering help. Both of her "Morning" quotes, the "Hat and Hair" one, her "Praise" and "Intimacy" quotes... Take a moment to listen to them, really.
Matilda is at her best when she's able to help others, and the fact that her skills in divination and foresight are her biggest pride also hint towards that. It's a skill that's usually associated with easing people's anxieties about the future or the unknown.
The one moment in the main story that sold me on this portrayal of Matilda is her divination scene with Sonetto - once Matilda sees that her friend is in serious need of help and guidance, she pushes her feelings aside just to help on the spot. This is the most serious she's been, and she's gentle and calm, nothing like the Matilda we've seen whenever Sonetto was involved.
When it comes to you, it's no different. While she might've gotten over her initial flustered feelings and whatnot, Matilda would continue to consult her divination orb - if only to know that you'll be okay. And you can always, always come to her if you need a little peek into your future. You might be the only person in the world with that luxury, actually.
This aspect of Matilda also extends to smaller things, of course! If you ever struggle with anything, especially when it comes to academics, she'll step in right away - more than often, she'll do it without even knowing what she signed up for, so forgive her if she suddenly realizes she has no idea what subject you're even talking about. Still, the great Matilda is no quitter, and will research in her free time just so she can help you during study sessions.
People tend to assume Matilda is a horrible listener just because of that pompous and confident attitude she carries herself with - but this is far from the truth! Again, her skill relies in divination, a type of arcanum that relies entirely on seeing what's already there, on being perceptive to one's surroundings and the person seeking her help.
Whenever you need to vent or ramble to her about whatever might've been bothering you, Matilda always sits there, holding your hands, listening intently to every word. It's the same look she has during exams, only softer.
And once you're done, she always gives the most sound and solid advice - should you want it! She always makes sure to ask first! If there's one thing she hates is unsolicited advice! And even if she cannot help you in finding a solution for your troubles, she can still offer her support by loudly complaining with you!
On the subject of Matilda and romance.
To loop back to the very beginning of this post, romance as a whole is still very new to Matilda. Whether you've been her partner in crime for a handful of months or many years, I think any displays of affection will render her speechless, red as a tomato and flustered to the moon and back.
It doesn't matter if all you did was hold her hand, pat her head or give her a surprise hug - Matilda always, always reacts the same way. She squeaks and complains, but never pulls away.
As clingy as she is, following you around and insisting on being seated together all the time, etc etc, Matilda struggles with being on the receiving end of physical affection - at least whenever they're done in a romantic context. She has no problem dragging you around, arms linked together and all, but the second she notices the romantic context of the situation, she'll go back to being a flustered mess. It's yet another thing that will take her some time to get used to.
Make sure not to tease her or make it obvious that you've noticed whenever she tries to hold your hand while walking! That's the one thign that will absolutely get her to retreat right away! She's doing her very best and gather the courage to show you she cares for you!
That aside, I do think Matilda loves being complimented just as much - appealing to her ego is extremely easy, after all. And considering you're the one complimenting her, whatever you say will inevitably get to her head.

Jealousy pt.1- Miyuki x gn!Reader
Return to File
Recovery date: February 14th, 2022
Description: I really loved your hcs for Miyuki and Chris! Could I request an angsty thing (hc or scenario, whichever you’re comfortable with) about Miyuki getting jealous for whatever reason and distancing himself from his s/o? Maybe a bit of fluff at the end so it doesn’t hurt too much 🥲🥲🥲
Notes: Recovered in conjunction with research @curlyzensei, we thank them for their contribution. The second entry is available here.
Word count: 1 175

Seidou was a little far from home for Miyuki, but distance meant nothing to him if it meant he could play baseball. Besides, it wasn’t like there was any reason for him to stay nearby. He didn’t have friends. That was what he’d told himself when Rei approached him while she was scouting Chris.
They had a strong reputation and it was a chance to play on the same team as Chris, to go head to head for the catcher position, it sounded perfect. It was an all around challenge against people who loved the sport just as much as him.
“You're late,” Y/N huffed, swinging their legs from the porch of Miyuki’s house.
Miyuki had one friend, he realized as he stood at the bottom of the stairs, and he was going to leave them.
“Sorry, I was busy being scouted by Seidou,” he smirked.
“Seidou? The school in Kokubunji?”
Miyuki opened the door and let the two of them in.
“Yup.”
“Maaaan,” Y/N whined, “that’s so far!”
“It really isn’t, you’re just a baby,” he shrugged, pulling things out to make dinner. “What does it matter how far it is anyways?”
“It means I can’t see you all the time! Who’s gonna stop you from getting into a fight? Or apologize when you talk back to upperclassmen? If you go to Seidou you have to promise you won’t keep getting into fights!” They scowled, leaning over the counter.
“Hey! I don’t always get into fights… And who said I was going to Seidou anyways?”
It was a rhetorical question, they both knew he was going.
“I mean if you don’t take the offer I’ll never speak to you again.”
“Aww, you really care about me don’t you?”
“Shut up,” they sighed.
---
“It’s cold, hmph,” Y/N ducked their head further into their scarf. “Why couldn’t he pick a warmer day to come back.”
“Because he’s insufferable and any other day would be too nice,” Mei shrugged, handing them a warm drink.
“Thanks, and it’s not nice to call people insufferable.”
“Wa?! But you call me insufferable all the time!”
“No, I say you’re being insufferable, there’s a difference.”
“Y/N how could you?” Came an over dramatic gasp from the other side of the platform.
The two looked up to find Miyuki posing in mock offense as he watched Mei and Y/N bicker.
Y/N giggled, waving at him, and yelled, “Welcome back Kazu-chan!”
“You’ve replaced me?” He called as he approached them, “And with Mei no less.”
“Ha, you should have joined us at Inashiro. See what you’re missing,” Mei slung his arm around Y/N’s shoulder, “your two favorite people.”
“Mh, calling you one of my favorite people is like saying Sawamura’s not an idiot.”
“Wa-hey! Y/N-chan telling him to stop bullying me!”
“Sawamura… Sawamura… Ah! Seidou’s southpaw!”
The three began to leave the station, heading towards a small restaurant for lunch.
“Aw, you’ve been watching my games,” Miyuki cooed, knocking into Y/N.
“No, not really.” They shrugged. “I just heard about him from the team, apparently he nearly spilled all your secrets to Mei."
Miyuki's smirk dropped slightly, "You haven't been watching my games? But you've never missed one of my games!" He whined.
"They've been watching my games because I'm their favorite!" Mei cheered, pulling them closer and leaning his head on there's.
As they approached the restaurant and Y/N filled him in on their academic news, Miyuki found himself growing increasingly annoyed as Mei filled in the blanks to stories he'd yet to hear.
“Kazuya?” Y/N called, waving their hand in front of his face once they sat down. “Kazuya are you alright?”
“Mh? Oh, ya… I was just thinking about how busy you sound, makes sense why you haven’t come to visit me.”
Y/N frowned.
Miyuki looked to the empty space beside them so he didn’t have to see, and noticed Mei was gone.
“Where’d Mei go?”
“The bathroom, but don’t change the subject. Is something wrong? It’s not like I’ve been avoiding you or anything, you just don’t get out of practice until late. Nothings stopping you from calling me.”
They watched him intently as he continued to avoid eye contact.
“It’s nothing, you're right…”
---
“Your girlfriend break up with you or something?” Kuramochi asked, leaning against the wall next to Miyuki. Miyuki shot him a quick glare and swung his bat a little harder than necessary. “Boyfriend? Partner? Significant other whose contact you make googly eyes at- ya, I see that. We all see that,” Kuramochi said, not moving even when Miyuki leveled him with a glare and dropped his bat.
“What makes you think something bad happened?” Miyuki scowled, ignoring the last half of Kuramochi’s comment.
“Because when you came back from last winter break you were scarily happy and… nice,” Kuramochi shuddered. “And now you’re all sulky and it’s in the team's best interest that you get out of this as soon as possible. We don’t want a repeat of the fall.”
Kuramochi pushed off the wall and turned to leave when Miyuki called out to him.
“Hypothetically-”
“If you want my help cut the crap you damn four eyes.”
“Fine,” Miyuki slumped against the wall and Kuramochi joined him. “I have this… friend, they go to Inashiro and I haven’t been able to keep in touch with them because I’ve been busy with practice and school.”
“So you’re being a shitty friend and you're sulking because they aren’t putting up with it?”
“I’m not being a shitty friend! Would you let me finish?”
“Alright, alright.”
“Anyways, they were telling me about what they’ve been doing and- for our whole lives I’ve always known everything that happened to them- and for the first time Mei, Narumiya Mei, was filling in bits and pieces for them.”
“So you’ve been a shitty friend, your friend went and made a new friend in the guy you hate most, and now you're jealous.”
“...”
“I don’t know what you want me to say man, send them an email? Become pen pals? Kill Mei so they don’t have any more friends?”
“Well,” Miyuki looked considerate of the last point.
“No. Look, I know I give you a lot of shit… but if your friend’s been trying to stay in touch and you haven’t, you’re the only one at fault here.” Kuramochi sighed as he stood back up. “Well, that’s all I got. But hey, if things don’t work out between you two would you give me their number?” He snickered.
“Kuramochi i swear to god-”
“Goodnight Miyuki!”
With a deep sigh, Miyuki dropped his head into his arms.
Kuramochi had a point. The only person to blame for how out of touch they were was him.
Taking a deep breath, he froze as his phone began to buzz. Y/N’s contact popping up on the screen.
Not the person he wanted to talk to right now.
“Maybe later,” he sighed, letting out the breath he was holding and declining the call.

I'm planning on making a much more in depth post about Eggman and Gerald in the future because I have WAY more to say but I just wanna compile the instances of this certain funny fact about it that I absolutely love.
Even though Gerald was Eggman's idol and he was inspired by him and he had all these great things to say about him, he can't ever mention/praise him without praising himself/flexing that he's related to him in at least some way.
He calls Gerald the greatest scientific genius in the HISTORY of the world, and adds "that's my grandpa" like "not everyone gets to say that, how cool am I for that haha." Love how you can hear the pride in the tone of his voice too.
youtube
But he also calls himself the greatest scientific genius of the world as the opening for every journal entry and says he'll mark his own place in history as the ULTIMATE genius.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because Gerald had his time with the title and status when he was alive but it's his time now.
He also literally says this word for word on the subject of Gerald again in Shadow 2005 btw, as a way to say he had his turn and now it's time for him to do whatever he wants with what he left behind as he pleases. Another selfish move.
Tumblr media
Pointing at himself with the Egg Dealer's limb for emphasis lol
He also refers to Gerald as "one of the greatest scientific minds", the specification makes me think it's in a like “but don’t forget about meee, I am too~” kind of way lol
Tumblr media
And with the proud "and my grandfather" again added on right after the fact, it's like he's like "AND he’s also the grandfather of the best person and greatest scientific genius in the fucking universe and that’s even cooler baby!!!" ahfjhkafhsfgh he’s so funny 🥰
And then in TailsTube, he couldn't mention Shadow being created by Gerald without bragging about being related to him again, as a way to praise himself for his genius by being related to him so it's like it runs in the family. Anything to give himself some of that praise.
youtube
(Also damn, the way he scoffs and says his grandfather's creation is the "SO CALLED ultimate life form" like that. 💀 Mans still thinks he can do better!)
It's literally just like Eggman with Sage. LITERALLY just like it. It's super funny how the way he talks about both further proves that he can't value/respect/praise anyone without making it about himself as the massive fucking egotist he is, it's 100% never genuine and selfless and I believe he's incapable of that.
That's why I headcanon that another part of why Eggman was inspired so much by Gerald is that being related to him also helped with his hope to accomplish his own dreams and always fed his ego to take pride in even back as a child. Because judging by the jealousy and selfish egotistical entitlement he says he's always had in the Egg Memos, nothing has changed.
Along with how it seems he only praises him from an academic perspective in genius and science instead, as his good deeds never factored in the reasons. I think a huge part of his admiration for Gerald was always about seeing himself in him for his genius and science and the pride he felt and it's why he felt so entitled to attention and power.
Eggman's narcissism, egotism, selfishness, and pride always factors into literally everything he does. He is the epitome of self-centered. I love how it shows in everything he does. Even with the closest he gets to admiring and valuing anyone like Sage or even Gerald in any way, it's for the pride he can have in being related to them in any way and the ways he can benefit.
This also goes back to how I said it's different when it comes to Maria because not only did he not create her like Sage, he also can't relate to her like he could with Gerald to any degree, so he couldn't take pride in her for the same way. And that's why he hates the attention she got- because he can't have a piece of that pie.
Also speaking of Eggman feeling entitled to attention, power, and anything else he wants, he uses his relation to Gerald to say that he's entitled to doing whatever he pleases with any of Gerald's creations as his grandson, including Shadow himself, which he uses as a way to demand him to obey him. This level of entitlement and selfishness isn't very respecting of his idol's memory, huh?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bring this up in this post because along with the entitlement and selfishness, there's actually also some pride in there with the "it was MY grandfather who created you"
I'm gonna get into this part and more about how Eggman talks about Gerald much deeper in a bigger analysis post in the future though because I have WAY more to say.
But yeah god I just want you to know how much I love this asset of it for now, how he can't genuinely praise anyone selflessly and always has to use it to praise himself, even when it comes to Gerald and Sage.
But in Generations even when he has the power to travel through time and fuck with the past it's just like "fuck Gerald the only person as smart as me is myself" jhsdjkdjkghfdbskfj
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nobody will ever be as great as he is or matter as much to him as he does to himself! XD 💜💕

Hi, asking because I recently got some feedback on my writing that I'm not sure how to process:
So I read a group a snippet from my manuscript in beta, and one person gave me some light criticism about the narrator. The book is close first person from the POV of a college-aged bookworm, though that scene doesn't really focus on her book reading or education. This person told me that my use of words like "verdant" or "penultimate" didn't fit with her dialogue in the moment. I got a bit defensive and clarified that she is established as well-read, so he let it go. (He also questioned why characters in 1945 were drinking Champagne out of coupes and not flutes, granted.) But that did send me on a bit of an anxiety spiral, so I have to ask... When is fancy language too much?
I genuinely don't know. I use words like "perchance" and "superfluous" and "ergo" in my daily conversations; I'm just naturally wordy. And people have told me as a kid to tone with the language because it makes me sound pretentious. It might just be me being autistic and not understanding conversational mores, but it does make one worry.
How do you tone down fancy language when it comes naturally to you? Or am I just needlessly worrying?
I know that this isn't exactly the question that you're asking, but it seems to me that there are two issues here: is using "fancy" language something that must be toned down in writing and if so how, and did the language the character was using match the context in which they were speaking?
To answer the first one, which seems to be your question, language like that isn't inherently bad if it's the language that the character would use. You are allowed to make specific linguistic choices for your character, and it seems like you're doing that here. But if you feel like you want/need to, I would look at other dialogue and listen to poeple speak. What words are they using in place of words like perchance or ergo? How are they phrasing things instead?
You probably need to do this anyway--unless all of your characters have the same background/education/etc (and honestly even then), they won't all be speaking the same way, so you should be varying your dialogue.
But now for the other part: from your description (and obviously you know better than I do), it seems like the comment isn't necessarily "I don't know if this character would ever use these words" as "there feels like a mismatch between this specific word choice and the broader dialogue in this scene."
And that is absolutely an idea worth looking into. You may ultimately decide that you disagree, but I wouldn't dismiss off-hand the idea that the reader is feeling cognitive dissonance when reading dialogue. That's the sort of thing that will jar a reader out of your story, which you generally want to avoid.
What is it that makes the reader feel like there's a mismatch? Is the dialogue otherwise crude or rough? Is everyone else using very different linguistic patterns? Is the character having an emotional outpouring that may feel academic to the reader because of the longer/more "well-educated" word choice?
These are all points that are valid and worth looking into.
I also just want to say--I wouldn't extrapolate a beta reader getting a historical fact about champagne consumption wrong out to them not having any worthy comments. I totally understand getting defensive about your work (I think ever writer does) but dismissing them out of hand because of a random factual error does you no favors.

OC Mannerism
thank you @the-raging-tempest for the template! it's hard for me to visualize these sort of things but i hope the general vibe gets across at least!
Tumblr media
BASICS :
NO. OF SPOKEN LANGUAGES >> Taldane, Skald, academic Draconic, basic Varisian, rudimentary Kelish
TONE OF VOICE >> Melodic is the best way to describe it. Her voice almost sounds as if she is always somewhat singing. I'd put her around on a higher end of average, with a very soothing cadence. A Mezzo-Soprano.
ACCENT >> Though subtle due to how much moving around she's done as a child and later on in life after running away, Layla has a brevic accent. The irl equivalent for her would be a balkan accent, thank you Taylor for the inspiration😌. Those who aren't from Brevoy wouldn't likely be able to pinpoint where it's from, but those who are would if they were perceptive.
DEMEANOR > Approachable! Very approachable, friendly, and confident. Her confidence is not in a way of being prideful, but of being comfortable in her own skin.
POSTURE >> From the template Cas made that I'm still filling out: Layla carries herself with an easy elegance and the proper poise of one who spent many years among the nobility. Some who watch her say her movement has an almost unnatural grace and assume it’s due to her moroi heritage.
HABITS :
-Layla is always moving in public in some way, swaying back and forth, playing with her hair or clothes. Her favorite is her amulet, and when she becomes more introspective she holds onto it to center herself. She's not incapable of standing still, she just prefers not to.
-Despite, or perhaps because of, her bad vision she is constantly watching her surroundings and looking over her shoulder at the slightest noise. She does her best to disguise this as part of her constant movement, instead of the surveillance it is.
-She is almost always humming to herself, to the point she frequently doesn't realize it.
COMPLEXITY :
VOCABULARY >> ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️ Only held back by own limited vocabulary, as Layla is very well read. Depending on who she is talking to, she can range from speaking casually to speaking as if she is for an Jane Austen novel. It is notable however that the more poetic she is in a conversation, the more likely it is she doesn't like someone. Of course she could just also excited and is getting carried away.
EMOTION >> ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚪️ Layla wears her feelings on her sleeve with no shame. Whether it joy or grief, you will likely know what she is feeling. Over the years she has tried to catch herself, and with help of people she trust she can at least be brought down from where her emotions take her.
SENTENCE STRUCTURE >> ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚪ Once again held back by my own limits. Again she is very well read, and had a very proper noblewoman's education, so it bleeds into how she talks.
PROFANITY: She doesn't cuss much, not because it makes her uncomfortable, but because she just doesn't feel like it. Her cussing can be surprising to those who don't expect it.
FREQUENCY >> ⚫️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️
CREATIVITY (in regards to profanity) >> ⚫️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ BOLD THAT APPLY
arse / ass / asshole / bastard / bitch / bloody / bugger / bollocks / chicken shit / crap / cunt / dick / frick / fuck / horseshit / motherfucker / piss / prick / pussy / screw / shit / shitass / son of a bitch / twat / wanker
THIS OR THAT:
straightforward or cryptic?
finding the right word or using the first word that comes to mind?
masculinity, neutrality, or femininity?
formalities or with abrasiveness?
praise or equivocation? (both, depends on the situation)
frankness or flattery (she does both, depends on the situation)
excessive or minimal hand gestures (idk if excessive is the right word, but she isn't 🧍‍♀️ the whole time either so lol)
name-calling or magnanimity? (this very much depends on who she's talking to and if she has control of her emotions at the moment)
friendly or blunt
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS
DO PEOPLE HAVE A HARD TIME HEARING OR UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHARACTER? Never, she is able to adjust very easily to the needs of who she's talking to. If they can't hear her, it's because of something out of her control or because she didn't want to be heard.
DOES YOUR CHARACTER’S POINT COME ACROSS EASILY WHEN THEY SPEAK? Depends on if she wants it to! But she is in general very articulate, so she has no difficulty sharing her point of view when she wants.
WOULD YOUR CHARACTER INITIATE CONVERSATIONS? Yes! She is the type of person to find someone who is in the corner and talk to them to put them at ease at a party, and try to get them to enjoy their time. She enjoys talking to as many people as she can because she enjoys hearing other people's perceptions.
WOULD YOUR CHARACTER BE THE ONE TO END CONVERSATIONS? Rarely. She will keep a conversation going as long as the other person is comfortable with it! It's only in conversations where she is angered does she cut it short, either to leave, or kill them lol.
WOULD YOUR CHARACTER USE ‘WHOM’ IN A SENTENCE?
Yes, both ironically and not lmao. noble ass but also mischievous ass.
YOUR CHARACTER WANTS TO MAKE A COUNTERPOINT. WHAT WORD DO THEY USE?
but / though / although / however / perhaps / maybe
all of them lmao, it depends on the context.
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER END CONVERSATIONS?
If the conversation is ended by her and it's not on a bad foot, she will smile and usually give a thanks for talking to her, say it was nice talking to them, and give a goodbye, though not necessarily all of them at once. If she's close to them she might hug them, or perhaps even kiss them on the cheek. It usually won't be in a formal manner, and she'd try not to overstay her welcome.
WHAT SOCIAL CLASS WOULD OTHERS ASSUME YOUR CHARACTER BELONGS TO, HEARING THEM SPEAK?
Just on voice? Probably they would assume she's from upper middle class, and probably assume she was raised by a wealthy merchant or something similar, or more accurately as a noblewoman. She can change it to better suit who she's talking to, so if she wants to come across a certain way, she likely can and will.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES THE WAY YOUR CHARACTER SPEAK STAND OUT TO OTHERS?
She can put most people who listen to her to ease, whether they notice it or not. She speaks clearly, and is genuinely polite but not to the point of sounding archaic. Most conversations with her leave her conversation partner in a better mood than they entered it with.
Anything that wasn’t touched on? -Despite me pointing out her habit of humming, she is heard laughing even more often. I think she'd have a very cute laugh, one that bubbles up and is infectious.
-Layla is an arabic name meaning 'night' or 'dark', given to her by her mother shortly before her mother's passing. Many believe, including Layla, it to be a purposely on the nose name for her child who was born in the middle of the night as a dhampir. It's pronounced 'lay-luh' as one would expect.
-If she feels threatened, Layla will be more likely to try and manipulate the person into not seeing her as a threat, before ultimately running away when they aren't paying attention. Ie. the fact that she'll mirror who's talking to.

Gravity Falls School-Related Headcanons
Both Dipper and Mabel are good students, although Mabel does occasionally get in trouble for getting distracted/not sitting still/talking in class, however, they're both generally considered to be good kids.
Dipper generally excels in all of his academic subjects, however his favourite subjects are biology and ancient history. He's usually pretty quiet in class, except every now and again he says either the most unhinged or most badass thing ever and everyone is freshly reminded that yes, Dipper Pines is, in fact, in this class (this is heavily inspired by my best friend who is exactly like that). Dipper doesn't hate PhysEd as much as he used to pre-Gravity Falls, however he's still not a huge fan of it.
Mabel's best subjects are the artistic ones, and she is instantly beloved by all the art teachers. She does a ton of extracurriculars, partially because she has a bunch of interests, and also because she has a tendency to join clubs and such because her friends/guys she's interested in are in them, and she has participated to some degree in every school musical she's had the chance to take part in. The only class she really struggles with a lot is maths, because it's 'too boring and logic-y' for her to stay focused on, particularly if Dipper isn't there to help her. She's also a cheerleader, because of course she is.
Friendgroup wise, Mabel has a lot of friendgroups. She has friends from all of her various classes and extracurriculars, friends she knows from elementary school (I had a long mindblank whereupon I forgot the word for 'primary school' in the USA, just thought I should let you know), and of course, she has extrovert-adopted Dipper and his friends. Despite this whole army of friends, she doesn't have any particularly close friends in Piedmont, and if she's asked who her best friend is, she'll respond with Candy and Grenda, who remain the only people who can quite match her energy.
Dipper, meanwhile, has pretty much had the same one best friend, named Ethan DiMarcos, forever. The two of them have very similar interests (although Ethan can't quite match Dipper's enthusiasm for all things paranormal), and tend to keep to themselves much of the time, and have pretty much had each other's back. While I'm not a huge fan of the idea that Dipper has been relentlessly bullied his entire school career and has no friends, it is canon that he has been victim of some bullying, and he's certainly not popular. Post-Gravity Falls, I think he's actually able to stand up to the bullies a little better, and generally he and Ethan have each other's backs. They do have a third friend, Paige Li, who they only met at the beginning of high school, because she was trying to find other DD&MD fans. Paige has had a crush on Dipper for ages, but despite Ethan and Mabel trying to pull strings, nothing is likely ever to come from it. Speaking of Ethan and Mabel, they did date for about a month in ninth grade, which horrified Dipper, especially since he was put in the middle of it when they broke up, thankfully amicably.
Now, I have said plenty about the Pineses, let's talk about what the other characters are like in school:
Candy's best subjects are chemistry, physics and music, and manages to be an impressively good student, despite reading fanfiction in class.
Grenda isn't necessarily the greatest student in most classes, however, she's BRILLIANT at English. For all she lacks in verbally diplomatic skills, she's incredibly smooth on paper. Grenda also, unsurprisingly, is also very good at PhysEd.
Pacifica's best subject is mathematics, and unsurprisingly she excels particularly at any finance-related maths. She's also the star of the school's debate team, because she has the power to crush people in the grip of logic. She also refuses point-blank to join the cheer team, even though they really want her.
Gideon's true calling is the stage, so drama class is his best class, although he's a brilliant student at most subjects.
Wendy and her friends are decidedly not good students, as they're all more interested in having fun and causing trouble than doing work (except Thompson, of course). This results in them being decidedly not the teacher's favourites.
I think that's all I got for now, thanks for reading!

Headphones in her ears, Musa walks through the halls with Stella. Her friend woke her up that Sunday morning, telling her that Silva wanted to see them in headmistress Dowling's office. They have no idea why, on this last day of the weekend, Silva summoned them. It's Stella who walks through the office door first as Musa takes off her headphones and puts them in her bag. She goes in the office too. Her gaze falls on one of the people seated around the desk. Her blood freezes and she feels her throat tighten. Sam. No, she can't do that, be in the same room as him. Just that, brings tears to the eyes of the fairy. She turns to leave and right then she bumps into someone's chest. She feels herself falling backwards and a hand lands on her waist to hold her against them. "Here...here." She will recognize this voice among all. The way it rises slightly in the treble when he laughs. His slight chuckles when he makes a joke. Riven.
"What's the matter?" He asks.
Musa gestures to Sam sitting behind her and Riven's smile disappears immediately.
"Riven, Musa, sit down" Dowling orders them.
The boy feels the panic passing through the eyes of the fairy. He comes to take her hand delicately. "I'm here, I'll be fine."
Stella comes to sit next to Sam and Riven sits next to her, in order to put more distance between Sam and their precious Musa.
Silva's amused eyes land on Musa and Riven's intertwined hands. The boy glares at him which Silva pretends not to notice. He finally opens his mouth to speak. "Well kids, you are probably wondering why you are here. Every year, on this day, the open days of Soloria take place and four students from each school are sent to the city of Limphea to present their study's place to bring new students into the schools, like open doors"
Stella crosses her legs and leans forward: "What does it have to do with us?"
"You have to go Stella because you're the princess, Sam because he's the son of one of our best teachers, and Riven and Musa because they're two of our best students." Talks back Silva
Riven leans slightly towards Musa and whispers to her: "In fact we are not enemies to lovers but academic rivals to lovers." The fairy holds back a smile.
"And besides, Riven we contacted your friends from Lymphea, they will accommodate you for the night and you will return Monday morning."
It was at the professor's word that Musa's heart started beating fast. A whole day and a trip with Sam makes her want to vomit. Everyone looks at her: "I...I can't do that."
She gets up and takes her bag to run out of the room.
"I'm going to see her" Say Riven following her.
He knows where Musa is going. He knows where she goes when the world gets too loud because he has the exact same favorite spot. He hurries out of school to go to the forest. He takes the small muddy path and pushes the branches in front of his head to end up seeing someone sitting on a rock. Musa. He approaches quickly and sees her completely curled up on herself.
"Muse?"
She raises tear filled eyes to him. She chokes on her own sobs. Riven comes to kneel in front of her. "Slowly Love, gently...Breathe with me."
She tries, she really tries but her heart races too much. And the feeling of suffocation continues.
"You can do it..., there..." He takes her hand and puts it on his chest, where his heart is. "Concentrate on my breathing, on me."
She tries to focus on Riven's calm, reassuring heart. She looks him straight in the eye, the light green of his eyes piercing her and slowly, slowly, her breathing calms as Riven encourages her, telling her how well she's doing.
"What happened, Pixie?"
She takes a deep breath.
"Sam...I can't stand...this trip and then spending a day with him."
He puts a hand on her leg, trying to give her comfort with that simple touch. "Explain to me."
"I'm scared, I'm scared that I can't make it. I'm scared because I can't stand staying with Sam. You know, the others don't know why we left each other. They just know that it broke me because I spent whole weeks crying."
Tears return to her eyes and Riven presses the fairy's hand to his heart a little more.
"I know that going inside his head to amplify his positive emotions, not to modify them eh, was not a good thing. But the words he said to me, that was immoral and it makes me sick."
The more he listens to Musa talk, the more Riven feels the urge to hug the fairy so that she will never be attacked by anyone.
"But...I can do it...I can face it." She stands up, with an assurance he had never seen. "And there will be you and Stella."
She takes her bag and the boy's hand to take the path out of the forest.
"Pixie?"
"Yes?"
"He's silly, if you were in my head to make me a little happier for at least a few minutes, I think I would have kissed you and then asked you to go in my head all you want."
Musa burst out laughing. "Oh yes?"
Riven sees the little star that twinkles in the fairy's eyes.
"Yes of course."
"Of course, at this point?"
As he speaks, the boy's hands land on Musa's waist. She laughs softly as she feels the boy's hands tickle her. He hears her laugh and he wants to hear that sound again so he tickles her again. She moves in his arms, chuckling as he continues his gentle torture. In one of her movements, she turns, facing him. And without doing it on purpose, at the same time laughing, Musa comes closer to him to lean against the boy's shoulder. "Let's go mind fairy, we have to pack clothes to go."
They are all getting on the train. Riven helps the girls put their bags under their seats and then sit down opposite Musa. Stella comes to sit next to her so that Sam isn't next to her.
"So Musa, you moved on quickly didn't you?" Sam asks her sarcastically.
The fairy feels her hands tremble. Stella looks at it with concern, as if ready to scoop her up with a teaspoon. Riven sees it very well. "Samuel, come let's talk."
The specialist grabs the boy's arm and pulls him out of their cabin.
"What do you want Riven?"
"I want you to shut the fuck up."
Sam glares at him.
"What?!"
"You are so disrespectful, you think you are better than her? You are not. Yes, this is true what she has done is not good but what you told her, it's not normal. It's stupid and evil."
Sam's face goes red of anger: "She went into my head!"
"She is a mind fairy Sam, what did you expect ?! It's her thing to read mind. She does it with everyone, you are not special."
Sam is about to leave but Riven blocks his way.
"Leave her alone, you don't even want to be with her, you're just jealous that she's happy with someone other than you. And that this someone is me. So leave her alone. And if I catch you again disrespect Musa or any other woman in front of me, I swear it's gonna be bad for you."
Riven exits the room and returns to the cabin with the girls. Sam doesn't dare go back there.
"Where's Sam?" Stella asks.
"Gone for a walk."
Musa looks at him gratefully.

Arrived at Lymphea, a car brings them to the conference room. In front of the door a boy is waiting for them. When Riven gets out of the car and sees the boy, his smile widens. They come forward and jump into each other's arms.
"Riven!"
"Nabu!"
"What are you doing there mate?"
"Ha you know, we have to talk about our school."
Abu shakes his head smiling and looks behind him.
"Who are these people?"
Stella steps forward and holds out her hand towards him: "I am Stella, he is Sam and behind is Musa."
Abu's smile widened even more. "Musa? The Musa? Riv told me a lot about you."
The fairy's face filled with curiosity. "What?"
Filled with a certain shame, Riven casts an icy stare at Nabu. "Nothing nothing, let's go we'll be late."

Is it possible for you to have a dialogue with this person please? She appears to be a real Egyptologist and not intentionally transphobic, but denies you can call any ancient Egyptians trans and calls that western and basically seems (to me) to imply it’s racist. She also cited things making it seem like that is the main academic view.
https://rudjedet.tumblr.com/faq
Honey, I don't know how to tell you this, but none of what you've said is factually accurate and I can say that having known @rudjedet personally for over a decade.
a) She is a real Egyptologist. She has been the entire time I've known her.
b) She does not deny that trans people have always existed. She specifically says we cannot use modern western terminology and apply it to an ancient poc civilisation. They didn't have or use these terms. The Ancient Egyptians specifically didn't use any terms, which means using terms outside 'possible queer/gnc/wlw/mlm person' simply doesn't work within the cultural framework to use them. We can't even use cis because they don't know what that is either! It *is* racist to insist that we should shove a white western framework onto a decidedly non white ancient civilisation. You're basically telling ancient poc you know more about their lived experience than they do. Can you see how that's racist? Because it's pretty damn racist.
c) this does not mean that gnc people did not exist, and your extrapolation of that from her posts is incorrect. She does not deny they exist, she simply states that within the cultural framework for Ancient Egyptian understanding of gender the Pharaoh Hatshepsut is very clearly the Ancient Egyptian understanding of female. To our modern eyes, there appears to be gnc stuff, but to the Egyptians this is completely within cultural norms and Hatshepsut isn't even the only female King to do these things. She wasn't even the first or even the second! In fact every female ruler of Ancient Egypt does this, so we can in fact identify this as working within Ancient Egyptian ideas of gender: male when they express their kingship, female literally every other time they speak about themselves.
d) Rudjedet firmly admits that some of the older posts on this were not always worded in the best manner, and has addressed and apologised for this on multiple occasions. Her later additions, and I'm absolutely certain you're coming here from Controversial Truths because we're endlessly dealing with people who only see something from 2018, and assume the worst without reading the newer and better explained additions. She even edited earlier posts so they were worded better, but left them up so it can be seen how she's grown and developed better language for talking about this.
e) I had a 'dialogue' with her privately, wherein I showed her what you sent me and what you accused her of. In doing so, I saw your anons to her where you outright accuse her of being a transphobe, one of which was from a post that she never even added to that was posted, by someone who's agender (and you can take your problem with that post up with the agender person who posted it), so you can come here all 'she's not intentionally transphobic' all you like, but I know what you sent to her where you just directly accused her of being transphobic and you weren't as polite to her as you have been with me. In fact you didn't even attempt to ask her to clarify any of her points and went straight onto the attack, yet you want me personally to engage in 'dialogue' on your behalf when you behave like this? No.
Finally, just anonymously asking someone to 'go have a word' with someone else who they may or may not know is incredibly passive aggressive. You're the person with the problem here, so if you want to talk to her and discuss the issue like adults, then you can go over there and have that conversation. Do not seek to involve me in your disputes.

The Sumeru Akademiya, Astrology, and Mona's mysterious origins
(Originally posted on my Twitter on August 27 and 28, 2022.)
Sumeru is exciting for a multitude of reasons, but a major point for me is learning more about astrology from astrologist characters other than our beloved Mona Megistus!
One of the six Darshans of the Akademiya is Rtawahist, a department dedicated to Illuminationism, the study of the stars that includes astronomy and astrology.
Tumblr media
The ex-Grand Sage of the Akademiya was the sage of Rtawahist, Azar. This means that an astrologist was leading the school. You would think this means astrology is a well-respected subject in not just the Akademiya, but Sumeru as a whole. However, it seems that isn't the case.
Tumblr media
The elderly researcher (who refers to himself as an astrologist) implies that they are not being funded well, but that may be a recent thing. There's lots of talk of a secret project (that we now know was the Fatui working with the sages to make a god out of Scaramouche) diverting much attention and money away from other research projects.
Notably, Qushji mentions Hydromancy, the art of divining fate from the stars' reflection in water, which was developed by none other than Mona's master herself! In the 3.x Archon Quests thus far there's been no mention of Mona's master or Mona.
Tumblr media
To my current in game knowledge, it's unclear how much, if at all, Mona and her master are affiliated with the Akademiya and astrologists in Rtawahist.
The newly released character, Layla, an Akademiya student from the Rtawahist Darshan and specializing in theoretical astrology, has this to say about Mona:
Mona Megistus, the Astrologist... Her astrology column in The Steambird is well-known among Rtawahist scholars. Her articles always cover super specialized topics, but can still be appreciated by non-academics. That's no easy feat... Huh? Her name seems to just roll off my tongue? Uh, that's just because... I have a lot of respect for... amazing people.
This seems to imply that Mona (and by extension her master) are independent of Rtawahist and the Akademiya.
Another researcher, Ashk, has a very interesting conversation with the Traveler. He implies that due to human ignorance and therefore error, the truth divined from the stars may be incorrect or misleading. When he asks the Traveler what they think, you receive a reward for choosing the second dialogue option, "Things might not be as they seem..."
Tumblr media
What stuck out to me is the talk of ignorance in the nation of wisdom. Mona's cinematic from her mirage in Summer Fantasia described the crystal bird as, "born in wisdom, but trapped in ignorance".
Tumblr media
Given that this event directly preceded Sumeru, I don't believe the choice in words is a coincidence.
The same researcher goes on to speak about research into constellation. It seems that in order to study those, one must have a Vision. It's still a bit unclear whether only Allogenes have constellations, or everyone does regardless.
Mona's line about constellations implies the former. This exchange is important because it plants the idea that destiny - the past in this instance - can be altered if someone is the one deciding it in the first place.
Tumblr media
This is a reoccurring theme in the game - rewriting fate, challenging destiny. I'm very curious to see if Mona will make an appearance in the Sumeru storyline at some point, and if we'll finally learn more about her master and Hexenzirkel in turn. The set-up is there!
At the beginning of the Sumeru Archon Quest, Haypasia gives us our first introduction to the Rtawahist Darshan. She describes its goals as studing astrology, astronomy and the stars’ link to destiny, who then also try to connect with Irminsul to deepen their knowledge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That sounds a lot like Hexenzirkel.
Tumblr media
I've speculated about Mona's master and/or Hexenzirkel possibly being affiliated with the Akademiya. If her master were to have that connection, I wonder why Mona doesn't? We know next to nothing about Mona's origins or past.
We don't even know why she's studying astrology, how she met her master, and how Mona came to study under her. Mona is steeped in mystery, and that's how she's meant to be. Her character introduction on the Genshin Impact website describes her as "a mysterious astrologist".
Tumblr media
Many people assume Mona is from Fontaine because she writes the column "All Things Astrological" for its famed newspaper, The Steambird, but we have no indication of where she came from. Is it Sumeru? Is that where she met her master and studied astrology?
Time will tell!

Spirited Away
It feels unusual to look at a childhood film with academic eyes but here goes nothing.
The way this film handles identity is really interesting to me! For Chihiro and Kohaku, this takes the form of names. By having your name forcibly taken from you or forgotten, you lose your sense of self and become vulnerable to other people. Not only do you lose yourself but you lose your home as well. Although signing the contract is essential for her to continue existing in the spirit world and find her parents, it also means giving away her name and sense of self. She now needs to keep safe her identity and keep a hold of herself as much as she can. To me, this also manifests as the need to be confident in one's self. Kohaku tells Chihiro she needs to keep asking for work and Chihiro does persist even when Yubaba is in her face. In other words, Chihiro must learn how to look confident, stand her ground, and remain dedicated to her goals. And she does the whole film through! Kohaku does much the same especially when he takes hold of himself again after the bug controlling him is squashed, revealing to Yubaba the disappearance of her precious baby. About the being unable to go home part, I'm not sure what to make of it but only that losing your name cuts your connections to your previous life. I guess in that sense you no longer remember home or where it is.
No Face is another example of identity too. Without a face, do you have an identity? Not only for us humans but the creatures of the film are each unique in some way. If not by face, then by personality but how do you express personality? Generally it is by speaking. No Face has no mask and constantly struggles to speak unless he's stolen someone else's voice (like the frog's). In that sense, No Face is unable to express his identity and therefore has no identity at all. Chihiro must interpret by his actions, by his few words, and by her own sense of kindness. The scene where she notices No Face following her to the bus, she asks him if he is and he doesn't really reply. But she is happy to use one of her tickets for him. I think that's why he gets along with Zaniba at the end of the film. She is also kind and gives him a home and good work to do.
Identity is also sort of tied to form at least in other people perceive someone's identity. Yubaba and Zaniba share an appearance so that Bo and Chihiro are caught off guard by Zaniba's appearance and actions. However, the two are so obviously different from each other. Chihiro must stand up to Yubaba but she is grateful and hugs Zaniba. Bo is spoiled by his mother but then stands up to her. He is at first bullied and taught a lesson by Zaniba but it is because of Zaniba that he learns to stand by himself and enjoy moving on his own four (two?) feet. Identity doesn't have to be set by one's form but it is dictated by one's name and one's actions.
Oh! And also one doesn't need to secure one's self alone. Throughout the film, Chihiro is always relying and being helped by people in order to get along in life. I do think that this film is part of Chihiro's coming-of-age journey but she does not become self-sufficient or independent and confident through her own efforts alone. She is grateful to Kohaku for all her help. It is he who tells her to remember her own name and he also remembers it for her too. And it is Chihiro, helping him in many ways in return, who remembers his name for him.
Tumblr media
There is also an environmental message in the film. The most obvious example is Kohaku losing his name because his river was forced underground by humans. There is also a shot of the bathhouse too. From a side shot, we see that the front of the bathhouse is colorful, luxurious and bright. However, the back of it is dark and full of crude machinery. This should be just the same side that Chihiro had to make multiple dangerous trips through to get her job, go see Kohaku, and also return the seal to Zaniba. In other words, people try so hard to make things look pretty and structured but are just hiding ugliness behind it. Comparing Yubaba's beautiful, ostentatious palace to Zaniba's peaceful country home reveals how much more greedy and materialistic Yubaba is. Although… I mean Yubaba's hut is actually pretty luxurious going by country standards? Lots of space, cabinets, beautiful furniture… but it's a bit unfair to judge because how "frugal" or "minimalistic" should one be in order to not look greedy, huh?
