There are just not enough words to describe how proud I am of Hippo Campus. This band has been a part of my life since 2015 and I still can’t believe that I, alongside some great friends, were a part of witnessing them headlining at Red Rocks for the first time.

I’ve seen Hippo live before (in 2018 before my birthday) but the experience of seeing one of my favorite bands perform an amazing set at such a beautiful and iconic venue, there’s just no words. This band of friends from Minnesota did that, without radio but with love from their fans💜

(Also, shoutout to Charly Bliss and Gus Dapperton for also putting on a fun set last night as well😌✨)

Another really fun but extremely unexpected thing to happen was that I casually ran into Whistler and Zach from Hippo at the grocery store the night before the show. Thank you both (and also thank you to Demi and Gianna) for your kindness and patience with me😌✨

Last thing: I finally got to hear Poems live. It’s been one of my favorite Hippo songs since it was released in 2017 and hearing it live at such a wonderful place, surrounded by so many people was magical and amazing.

(I guess all of those tweets and telling Whistler and Zach directly to play it actually worked😌)

Overall, I’m so grateful, thankful and blessed from this whole experience. I’m so thankful for Hippo Campus for using the power of music to bring myself and so many others joy and to bring us all together. I got to meet some of my Internet besties because of them and made some amazing memories😌✨

Bambi by Hippo Campus is one of THE songs of all time for me. It's kind of my depression song but also it's just. Me. "I swear to god I wasn't born to fight. Maybe just a little bit. Enough to make me sick of it." Chefs kiss.

Slide by Calvin Harris ft. Migos and Frank Ocean is another one, and it's just me but not depressed. Even if it's still a little more chill and lowkey for a summer bop. I don't care, it schmoves man. It's a groovy iconic piece of history, fight me. "I might. Empty my bank account. And buy that Boy With A Pipe." Bitch me too! The Fuck! I don't even love Picasso that bad and I'd still lose all my millions to buying art. I'd be buying "A New York Blizzard" though.

This is tough because memory is Indelible, ever shifting, ephemera. I could not tell you this is the first song anymore than I can tell you my first fruit. My first love, my first fight.

I will pick a rabbit out of a hat though and say it's "Son of a Gun" by Janet Jackson ft. Carly Simon. I remember LOVING that song when I got All For You on CD for my birthday (if you couldn't tell I was gay. Uh. idk what to tell you man)

migraine - twenty one pilots (i know top meaning a lot to someone is cringe, but they were super important to me during a time when i was mentally not great lol and this was their first song that i knew all the lyrics to. hearing how i was screaming the lyrics in concert videos from last year she's uhhhh left her mark), monsoon - hippo campus (bit heavy but one of my school friends killed himself a year and a bit ago and this song helped me through that alot), tempt you (evocatio) - nothing but thieves (ok so when i was like 17/18 i had a massive crush on this girl who was really into fob, top, p!atd that kind of stuff and i kind of just absorbed her music taste to try and have something to talk about with her. nothing but thieves were one of the first bands i listened to after that period, so for me they kind of signify the start of me developing my own independent music taste if that makes sense? like before then i'd just listen to the radio or what my parents listened to or whatever instead of finding my own music. i know i talk about bastille a LOT but nbt are very much 'my' band, y'know and this is the first song i heard from them)

Have y’all ever heard the song “GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE” by the narcissist cookbook? Because that song is so important to me

Basically it’s a story told from the perspective of a friend of someone who’s struggling from (presumably) depression. The speaker is guiding the friend in a kinda aggressive way, and the friend audibly (and implicitly) protests again and again. The speaker later on speaks directly to that fact that he’s helping his friend, even if his friend doesn’t know it/isn’t happy about it. The lyrics go like this:

“And listen/ I know, okay? / I know it feels like I've just got you lugging heavy rocks around all day / For no reason/ With no reward/ But please trust me, I can see what you're not able to see yet/ This is not just a pile of stones / Okay? / We are building a castle together / And we are gonna to build it brick by heavy fucking brick / And I'm going to be here with you, every moment / Talking you through it/ All you need to do is look at the ground in front of you / And put one foot in front of the other / And one day soon, I think / I hope/ You are going to look up and you are gonna see what we've been working on all this time/ You are going to see how far you've come/Rather than how far there is still left to go/And eventually/You won't need me around so much anymore”

And that particular verse hit me so hard, because the whole song is about this guy who knows what it’s like to be in the same position as his friend is. And he’s going to help because he loves his friend, and the guy doesn’t have to be happy about it but god damnit if he’s not gonna be subjected to the speakers persistence.

And I was thinking about it, because I have a very old playlist called “it gets better, it has to.” This playlist was originally titled something sardonic and defeatist, because when I made it I didn’t think I was gonna live to graduate. The first half of the playlist, from when it was made, is full of songs like that. It starts with songs I used to cry to, because that’s all I could do. Songs that reflected my bitterness towards the world and myself. Lots of twenty one pilots, liability by lorde, hollow by icon for hire, smaller than this by Sara kays, sick of losing soulmates and since I saw Vienna.

And then I started healing, and I renamed the playlist. Near the end are songs like streaks by anima!, one more time with feeling by Regina spektor, city of angels by 24kgold, change your mind from Steven universe, ribs by lorde, to build a home, lucky people, another night on mars, the mask by Matt maeson, buttercup by hippo campus. And to finish, the last two songs: dancing in the dawn by Jake Scott, and good morning sunshine, by the narcissist cookbook
