Whumptober day 16:
"Would you lie with me, and just forget the world?"
Gurney | flatline | "Don't go where I can't follow."
Fandom: Ducktales
Prompts used: all
So didnt think this was gonna go where it went but uh, it did. Based heavily on a tumblr post/story that did it way better than me, but some angst none the less. However as with most all my stories, the whole… clone thing? Yeah… nah. April May and June are their own birds and typically based off of the Legend of the 3 cabs show versions of them. So 🫶🏻
TW for temporary character death, near death experiences, implied child abuse, and children in dangerous situations.
It's dark.
Quiet, the world was full of noise at all times, but this, this was the absence of everything.
A glimmer of golden moon light, he looks towards it, a familiar scene plays out before his eyes.
Donald, maybe 6 years old, is wandering around Grandma Ducks farm, looking for something- no someone. He's still wearing the stiff material his parents like to put him in, which means he'd- no they'd- just been dropped off. He finds Della lying on the roof of the barn, skirt already covered in hay and dirt, hair pulled down from whatever hair do their mother had insisted on.
"You know Gramma doesn't like us up here." Donald's voice is hoarse from disuse, but his sister has always been able to understand him best.
"I needed to be somewhere high. Above their reach." Della responds, and older Donald remembers this. Remembers how angry his sister had been that day, how their parents had been insufferable. Tufts of hair and feathers had been pulled as they were made 'presentable'. "Would you lie with me, and just forget the world?" She finally asks, hand reached out to him.
He doesn't hesitate, taking her hand and laying beside her. They stare at the sky, matching bruised wrists pressed together, and forget.
Donald thinks about the couple years after that, before they moved in with Uncle Scrooge, and how many times they felt lost until they could look up at the sky together and simply be.
The golden glow takes on the slightest hue of red, like a sunrise over a pile of treasure, and Donald really has no other options in this black nothingness, than to watch.
He's older, maybe 12, and they're on an adventure. It's a rare one, Gladstone and Fethry allowed to join, and Donald can see his younger selves anxiety as the threes antics play out. Uncle Scrooge, for his part, is trying to figure out a riddle of some kind to get the entrance open.
Fethry is the one to actually figure it out, giggling with glee when the rock slides away to reveal the entrance. Scrooge is mildly impressed- though he wouldn't show it of course- and Donald ruffles the boy's hat/head in his place, Della whooping and Gladstone groaning out a 'finally' even as he grins at Fethry.
They head inside, following the old man's lead as he makes his way carefully, torch held high- because why use a flashlight?- and open book in hand. Some legend or other, some treasure he had to have, on an adventure he had to prove he could do. Donald didn't mind it, really it could be fun and he loved learning new stuff- Fethry and Della are messing around, a foot steps where it shouldn't, Donald is in front of them before he really thinks about it.
Something always went wrong.
Seeing it from the outside is strange, watching his younger self get punctured by several arrows. At the time he hadnt been able to take in his families reactions, and the aftermath had been lectures and the likes, but seeing it now… seeing Uncle Scrooges terror as he rushes back, Della and Fethrys screams he hadnt heard over his own falll, Gladstones paralyzed form as terror wide eyes stared at Donalds fallen form. He gets to watch the panic and fear and tears, from the temple all the way to the nearest hospital, how they all try to follow the gurney and are held back.
Donald hadn't realized they'd cared that much… Was it like that everytime? Or… just in the beginning, when they didnt use these things to their advantage? Donald knows it's gotten better- after so much worse happened first- but he wonders… right now, are they worried like this, or are they there at all?
Della had always assumed their times would come together. Even when she was on the moon, she figured she'd live and miraculously drop dead as Donald did on Earth and they'd reunite in the beyond and yell and hug and-
Or… as a kid, she worried it would end in a hospital before his time. He'd be injured because of her or another family member, and they'd all be gathered- or so many missing, why did they always leave when Donald needed them most?- around a too still form as a heart rate monitor flat lines in a high final tone.
Her heart has yet to calm, she's staring blankly before her, at a machine meant to destroy all adventure- meant to destroy her family- and yet… the only one missing is her brother, the duck ready to sacrifice himself for his loved ones at any given moment. The one who was dropped into an angry red ball of lightning, even after Scrooge signed that damned contract.
The machine was shut down moments after, moments too late, and the rage that had overtaken Della in that moment… figures she’d understand Donald after he was…
The ensuing battle was a mess, Della had seen red for most of it, Donalds bandmates had shown up to save Scrooge from a direct blast from the sword of swanstentine, and Louie and Huey had found a hole in the contract, and the family had won-
"Where's Uncle Donald??" Dewey is the first to ask, his brothers look around,
"He was on the platform with you guys wasnt he mom?" Huey looks imploringly at the adults before him, and Della falls to her knees.
"Mom!?"
Scrooge places a heavy hand on her shoulder, eyes teary as he tries to look at the children slowly gathering before them.
"Yer Uncle… well he-"
"No. Nonono, don't finish that sentence." Louie cuts him off, eyes wet and lower beak wobbling, "It's Uncle Donald. It's ridiculous how much he can go through and still come back. We need him so he has to be… he's fine!" Huey and Dewey are on either side of him, Webby has his hoodie squeezed in her fist, Violet and Lena are behind her, Gosolyn and Boyd inching closer to Dewey and Huey respectively.
Everyone else is closing in behind them, those who understand looking lost and shocked, and looking back at the machine like he'd just… waltz out of it.
Della sobs, something deep and bitter and broken, a wail so loud her ancestors must feel her pain. The clouds had dispersed with their victory, the sun mocks her as tragedy shakes the unshakable family.
"Della? Whats wrong?" The crackly voice is unmistakable, Della fears she is hearing things, that she'll find his ghost when she lowers her eyes, but Scrooges gasp,
"Donald Duck."
"Uncle Scrooge. What's everyone doing? Did we lose?"
Donald is being supported by José and Panchito on either side- Della hadn't seen them leave, just as she hadn't seen them arrive- he looks drained, a gray tinge to his form and darkness beneath his eyes. He'd only been gone a few moments but he looks like he went through hell to get back- and well maybe he did.
Della stumbles towards him at full speed, sure the others are right behind her, and tackles him to the ground. He wheezes, feeling too thin beneath her arms, but hugs back just as tight,
"I swear Donald, never do that again! Don't go where I can't follow. I… can't do this without you." She whispers it, a moment for them alone, voice trembling as she buries her teary face in his shoulder.
"I'm sorry. I'm here now." He runs a hand through her hair, one more long moment before she moves and a pile of children replace her.
"Uncle Donald!" The chorus is music to his ears, he'd thought he'd never hear it again.
He thought he'd drift in a black void, his thoughts his only company, forever. He felt weakened with every memory, sucked dry and hopeless as he realized his many mistakes and had his trauma bared before him. Seeing José's glowing green eyes had startled him into a squawk he hadn't realized he could release in the silence. His shadow form was practically invisible with no light to define him, but his hand had led Donald home. What had felt like a lifetime, had been mere minutes, but he was glad he didn't miss too much. He wanted to see the- his- kids grow up.
And give this whole family thing another shot.

WIP Wednesday #6
The only thing I've worked on this week is Where's My Mind? so here's a few snippets from that...
I'm able to squeeze one more important plot point out of Fenton's hair (the first was the thing with the hairpin), so in this scene Mads talks Fenton into letting him cut his hair for him (I promise this is relevant to the story).
"Alright, so how do you want it?”
“Hmm… Just back to how it was.” Fenton told him, looking at himself in the bathroom mirror. “Maybe a little shorter, so we don’t have to do this again for a while.”
“Aw, so you don’t want the sides shaved or anything?” Mads asked, combing Fenton’s hair. They’d found hair supplies in one of the other bathrooms. “We could dye it pink, too. Or I think I left some purple dye at your house, we could do that. Your hair is darker though so it might not show up-”
Fenton sighed. “Just back to how it was, please.”
Mads snorted. “Alright, if you want to be lame…”
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Archimede failed in hiding a giggle behind his hand. He was sitting on the bathroom counter, his back against the mirror as he watched Mads work.
AND Mads and Della finally get a talk.
Della said, letting out a breath. “We just… we fight over you. Gyro-”
“Oh, really? I’m flattered! I’d choose Gyro though, sorry Dels.”
Other than throwing him a murderous glare, Della decided to ignore that comment. “Because Gyro defends you and says he knows you better or something, and I want you put somewhere you’ll never escape. So every time you’re brought up we argue, and because of that we’ve just agreed not to talk about you, or about anything related to you. Which includes the mental connection.”
The Mad Ducktor hesitated. “Gyro… defends me?”
Della gave him a snide grin. “He did, but I don’t think he will now.”
It was a direct dig at him, but he barely seemed to notice. “What… What does he say about me? H-how does he defend me?”
Della waved a hand, pretending not to care. “Oh, just saying that you’re wildly misunderstood or something, I can’t remember anymore, I was too busy arguing with him to pay attention.” In reality she wondered why the Mad Ducktor cared so much. Gyro would passionately defend him and what he’d done- though Della knew part of that was due to Gyro’s stubbornness- so why wouldn’t the Mad Ducktor know Gyro would do that for him?
“Hm,” the Mad Ducktor dropped his head back down, yawning again. “Well good night, Dels.”
She scowled at the name. “Why do you call me that?” She asked. “You know I’m not your friend.”
“Exactly,” he said, his eyes closing. “It’s just to annoy you.”
“Thanks,” she grumbled.
“You’re welcome!” He said cheerily, eyes still closed as Blacklight finally relaxed next to him.
Della shook her head. “Good night, Mads.”
“Call me that again and I really will kill you,” he threatened in the same cheerful tone, not opening his eyes.
Here's the last one- Turns out Lil' Bulb has been reprogrammed and is working with Gyro, he gets into a fight with Blacklight.
The Mad Ducktor finished with his shoes, straightening up and walking over to where Blacklight and Lil’ Bulb were still fighting. Blacklight’s crack looked bigger, and Lil’ Bulb’s entire right arm was missing. Both of their lightbulbs looked badly scratched in several places.
Mads bent down, picking up Blacklight. “Hey, I’m okay!” He assured them as they fought back, not knowing who had just lifted them into the air.
Blacklight twisted around, their angry look turning to one of joy before they jumped out of Mads’ hand, landing on his shoulder and hugging the side of his face. Mads chuckled, before looking down at Lil’ Bulb. “What should we do with you?” He asked.
Lil’ Bulb blinked a few things that Archimede couldn’t translate, and the Mad Ducktor’s eyebrows raised. “I don’t think those are the greatest things to say to someone who has you hostage.”
The little robot moved to scurry away, but Mads saw it coming and made a swipe at him before he did. He just managed to catch him, quickly lifting him up and switching him off before he could fight back. He stuffed the robot in his pocket before twisting on his heel to face all of them.

What would be a good semi-obscure occultist for a character to name-drop to show they're into occultism that would read as authentic and impressive to a reader who is themselves an expert? (One of my pet peeves is characters who are supposed to be experts in something but only reference the most 101-level version of it that the author picked up doing research on Wikipedia.)
Now THIS I can answer.
Lodovico Lazzarelli. Weirdo Italian poet magician preacher. First Renaissance westerner to self identify as a Hermetic. He's pretty obscure because his work still hasn't been translated into English. Though that would imply your character can read Latin.
OH OH OH
Yohannan Alemanno. He was one of Pico Della Mirandola's hebrew teachers. Dude was a rabbi, a kabbalist, an alchemist, and a straight up full-throated unabashed astral magician, in Italy in the 1480s, which takes some brass fuckin balls. Dude was an odd duck. He wrote largely in Hebrew, and some in Latin.

Propaganda below!
Luther Hargreeves
He is a weird huge monkey man with daddy issues. What’s not to love
Spaceboy!
Della Duck
just look at her shes badass she amputated her own leg and made a prosthetic out of spare rocket parts shes not perfect but shes trying her goddamn best to be a good mother okay she is The character ever
greatest character of all time!
dear tournament runner i am so so sorry for the essay i'm about to write but i am not normal about my girl della
della duck is donald duck's twin sister and huey dewey and louie's mother
the whole history behind her is so interesting bc she unintentionally became the greatest mystery of the disney duck comic verse
one of disney's many weird rules is that their main 6 characters are not allowed to have children or parents. this rule is kinda wobbly in the sense that on one hand, it does get broken (goofy has a son in some canons & donalds mother is shown in some comics (though only in scrooge's flashbacks, she's never allowed to interact with donald)), on the other hand, it also tends to sometimes get applied to characters who are not part of the main 6 but still main characters. this rule meant, that when they wanted their main characters to interact with kids, they invented nieces and nephews. which had the added bonus that when they wanted to stories without them, they didn't have to explain the kids' absence (like for example mickey's nephews, which barely ever appear and, fun fact, were actually invented before huey dewey and louie). so, in one newspaper comic strip, huey dewey and louie were introduced and with them, della was mentioned for the first time, in a letter asking donald to take care care of the boys while their father is in a hospital from a prank they pulled. (said father was never mentioned again btw.)
after that, della didn't appear again for a while, and several shorts and comics revealed that donald has legally adopted the kids. different comics implied that donald has been taking care of the triplets their entire life, instead of just since recently like in their first appearance.
later comics actually showed della for the first time - however, only in flashbacks to donald's childhood. these comics also made her donald's twin. the only piece of media that showed her as an adult was her portrait in the duck family tree.
that is, until 2014 the first comic showing adult della and her fate was released - a dutch comic that was only reprinted in brazil, germany and the netherlands, and even in those countries, anything containing this story is pretty hard to get. it was never officially translated to english (thank god for fantranslations, tho). this comic showed della as a pilot, who tested a rocket and got lost in space when huey dewey and louie were babies. this is where her association with space and a lot of her ducktales 2017 characterisation originates from.
so, let's get into her biggest ever appearence - the ducktales reboot!
from the very beginning of this show, she's set up as the big overarching mystery - a little bit like the author from gravity falls. the pilot ends with dewey discovering a painting of her. it's a very shocking moment and for most viewers the first time they've ever seen della.
so like in the comic, she's a pilot, and she's been going on adventures with donald and scrooge for years. scrooge builds a rocket for her as a surprise gift for when her children hatch but she finds out about it and decides to take it for a test ride, during which she crashes it on the moon. so, she's stuck there, but nothing can stop della duck! she spends the entire 10 years fixing the rocket until she finally manages to get back to earth to her kids.
della is funny, strong, determined and just one of the best characters in the entire show. and she tries so hard to be a good mom to her kids after being absent for a decade even though she struggles so much to adjust back to life on earth.
i just love della so so much

Duck Musings - Why kill off Hortense?
An interesting question popped into my mind recently. It was revealed not too long ago that in the DuckTales 2017 verse, Donald’s and Della’s parents, Hortense McDuck and Quackmore Duck, were actually still alive, even though it has been commonly accepted amongst comic fans that it was safe to assume that the two were dead. Which does beg the question, if Hortense is the youngest of the McDuck children, and both Scrooge and Matilda are alive in the comics, why do we kill off Hortense?
Well the easy answer is that A) it explains why she’s never seen and why it appears that Donald was raised by Grandma Duck and B) fits in with the whole dead Disney Moms cliché. Of course we never get much confirmation that Donald’s parents are dead, but the idea fits in.
However, I think that’s only the surface answer, and by God, if I can overthink something about the Duck Comics, I’m going to overthink it.
Something I find a lot of Duck fans really enjoy, is the tragedy of the characters. I touched upon this when I talked about Gladstone Gander, but his tragedy falls along the lines of “it is lonely at the top”. A lot of writers and fans will explore the tragedy of Gladstone’s complicated relationship with Magica De Spell, Scrooge’s past and his love of wealth, it even slips into fans of the 2017 series, with people making headcanons of fanfictions of Fethry’s isolation in the abandoned sea lab. Why do these characters invite us taking such a tragic look at them? Why is it we want Gladstone and Magica to never get together? Why is it we want Fethry to get some retribution for his time in the Sea Lab? Why is it we want the characters to lose their loving parents?
However, it is this tragedy that can bring the characters together. Fans of DuckTales 2017 have noticed that Gladstone, Fethry and Della have spent most, if not all of the ten years Donald spent mad at Scrooge in isolation, noting that they all share that tragedy, albeit in separate ways, Gladstone being stuck in a casino that feeds off his luck, Fethry being stuck in a dilapidating sea lab, Della being stuck on the moon, and her only way home destroyed by a giant bug. It’s also easy to assume that Scrooge as well, was in some form of isolation. When we first see him, interacting with his money, he isn’t diving into it like we normally associate the character doing, he looks down almost depressingly at the vault as he drops a few coins in. It’s easy to believe that the only people Scrooge interacted with before Donald came back into his life, were his business partners, and Beakley and Webby.
This makes you wonder if the characters share other traumas and depressions, something they can all bond over. Something like, the death of their parents. It is common knowledge that Gladstone Gander’s parents, Daphne Duck and Gustave Gander, met an unfortunate fate on Daphne’s birthday, where they received a free picnic, and overate, or more realistically, choked on something. The tragedy of it is, Daphne shared the same birthday with her only son, Gladstone. Duck fan-comic writer Sarah Jolley, otherwise known as ModMad, did a fantastic take on this story in their comic The White Balloon, which adds even more tragedy to the story by tying it up with Gladstone’s insane bad luck on his Birthday, and also implying that Gladstone himself had something to do with it.
Canonically, Donald and Fethry do not share this tragedy with Gladstone, as there has never been confirmation of either of their parents dying, at least to my knowledge. But it is often headcanoned that Hortense and Quackmore died, leaving Donald to be raised by Grandma Duck, and it’s often been thought, though not by everyone, that Fethry’s parents, Eider Duck and Lullabelle Loon, also died. In a way, it brings the three cousins together, and it does tie into how they see family. In Ducktales 17, we know a big reason that Donald is overprotective of his nephews is because of Della’s mishap in space, that he fears losing someone else so close to him, especially Della’s kids. It isn’t hard to see that Donald feels similar about Gladstone and Fethry, that the loss of his parents, and his aunts and uncles, is a large reason that despite everything, he still loves his cousins. It can also tie in to readers who believe that Della died in space or on the moon, that this is some kind of curse for the Duck Family, Donald’s mother died, and when his sister became a mother, she died too.
One of my all time favourite Alternate Universes for the Duckverse is Solbabydraws’ “Teenage Cousin Shenanigans” which explores the universe where Donald, Della, Gladstone and Fethry grew up on Grandma Ducks farm, and it does not shy away from the fact that their parents are all dead. It even gives them character traits that might have stemmed from the trauma of having lost their parents at such young ages. Gladstone’s parents died from something food related so he has an eating disorder, Donald’s parents died in a car accident, so he takes road safety super seriously, Fehtry’s parents died unexpectedly and his brother, Abner (Sort of comics canon) was sent away, so he is kind of clingy. It doesn’t just look at how their tragedy effected them on a surface level, it does add some depth to it.
I looked at the possibility of how a tragedy effected Donald in this post here, where I talk about how Donald might not just be jealous of Gladstone’s luck, but also resent it, tying it to the loss of Della. And in another post, I talk about how Gladstone’s life of ease and luxury could simply just be a coping mechanism for him, toping it off with this post where I call Gladstone “Disney’s greatest Tragic Figure”. So, in some ways it is interesting to think about how these different tragedies have affected the characters, from Gladstone having an eating disorder, to Donald having PTSD from his time in the military.
Circling back to the original question, if it is unconfirmed that Donald’s parents are dead, then why do assume they are? Well, the basic answer, I believe is because at the end of the day, we do like exploring this tragic side of these characters. One of the greatest Duck comics ever written was a Topolino story called “The Solitude of the Four-Leaf Clover”, which asks the question, “What if Gladstone felt his luck was a bad thing?”. In some ways, this tragedy can help make the characters more relatable, easier to empathize with, and in some ways understandable. In the end, Hortense and Quackmore are not casualties or the vicious off-screen disease, but simply because their demises, make for a more interesting character study.
...
...
But, why does it? Why do we want these characters to go through hardships, misery and trauma? For that, I have theories, but nothing more.

Wait, What for fanfic bingo please
Tumblr media
I am very proud of Wait, What? One of my biggest pet peeves about the show was that it was never acknowledged that Gyro's gum- dispute the horrible taste of black licorice- saved Della's life and was the main reason she was able to get back to her family; all Della's grit and determination wouldn't have amounted to anything without that gum, and it ticked me off he never got any credit for that. The Ducks owed Gyro big-time! I can understand Della's grudge to a point, but I thought she was really ungrateful.
In all the "Della-and-Gyro-talk-after-she-returns" stories I've ever read, none of them really feature her telling Gyro how grateful she is for the gum. So, I wanted to do it. Justice for Gyro!
I'm quite proud of how I balanced the humor of Della's outrage over the black licorice with her earnest gratitude.
And even tho it's not canon, I love the headcanon that Gyro always blamed himself for what happened to Della, which is another reason I think the hate he got from Della in the series was a bit much. And I while I don't directly address that guilt in my story, I do imply it, which explains his reaction in the very end.
I also felt that this story is quite underrated, which is sad because I worked so hard on it.

1. Currently my favourite fic of yours is "I Think We're Alone Now." It's funny, everyone feels in character, and I'm excited to see what happens next!
12. I've reread "The Three Caballeros (And Della)!" and some chapters of Indiquack.
2. Speaking of Indiquack, my favourite chapter so far would be "Ground Control to Della Duck." So many great things about it. If I remember correctly, Webby, Lena, and Violet end up in like a Jumanji type board game and appear out of it in the middle of Della smoking weed. pretty funny. and then when the boys catch her. yeah, its a good chapter and I think this was the first thing I ever read by you.
1. Thank you so much!! I really love writing that one. I just love writing the adult characters be able to do adult things when the kids aren’t around. Someone like Della should be able to let loose and have fun with her friends every now and then. And always happen to add more Fendra stuff cause frankly Gandra deserves more love! As for what happens next; gonna have some more DuckTales characters make their cameos and this:
Tumblr media
12. You don’t know how badly I wanna write the next chapter of The Three Caballeros (and Della)! If it’s the next thing I post that’d be great. The plot hasn’t even truly begun in that one!
Also happy to hear that some chapters of Indi-Quack! are being re-read! First DuckTales fic so it’ll always be near and dear to my heart.
2. And Ground Control to Della Duck! is your favorite!? Thank you! I’m still proud of that one because I really think it does a great job starting off Indi-Quack! and showing what I wanted to do with that series
One of my favorite tropes ever is when an adventure is going on and/or happens off-screen and DuckTales did that a lot so I wanted to do that! And yes! Their adventure was indeed inspired by Jumanji (except it’s called Quack-A-Rooney!) I did that little bit of meta humor where Della recalls an adventure she and Donald had when they were kids was similar to Webby’s cause DuckTales is a reboot and Jumanji had its reboot! Also! I really wanted to imply that Della and Donald’s adventures were like the 80s cartoon and Webby saying “A baby elephant” was a reference to my first ever DuckTales media I ever watched, the DuckTales Movie. I just thought that line was so funny as a kid
And funny enough, the boys catching Della smoking weed was the inspiration for the entire story. I was joking around with my bro while we’re getting high of course saying that the boys catching Della getting high
I think we originally joked that Dewey and Louie would be like “Oh boy that means we’re allowed to get high too!” while Huey would be like “Oh you must’ve heard about the legalization of marijuana” and then Della would respond with “Weed’s legal now, huh? Cool.”

Hi! may i please get a comedy/angst one shot of a gn, possibly adhd, young adult reader getting caught up in a duck-mcduck adventure (donald, scrooge, the triplets, della, &/or webby) and just. Being so tired(depressed but in denial abt it) & having no regard for their own life (they fall like 10 feet and go "ow." in a deadpan voice, "lol too bad that didn't kill met, etc)? But they're fully willing to sacrifice their life for others? If too dark, just same reader being comforted on a bad day?
10 Feet Down
Scrooge McDuck & GN!Reader
Word Count: 1K+
Warnings: Implied suicide attempt/no interest in being alive sort of thing. Honestly I just thought Scrooge was such a bad comfort character, but I was wrong, although Donald is the best comfort character and cannot be used for a comedic hurt/comfort with low quality comedy lmao. for real tho, this is not my best work, but it's all i got

[Y/N] yawned and tiredly recounted the days they have been couped up in the McDuck manor—76 days with the exception of yesterday and that “disaster of an adventure” Donald had called it. It wasn’t because they were being held hostage at the manor or anything of that sort, it was more of [Y/N] not being a fan of going outside and getting a taste of the harsh Calisota sun and breathing in the ocean air. They stared at the humming machine in front of them as it slowly brewed another pot of coffee. They were obsessed with the heavily caffeinated beverage regardless of the off-putting taste when they drank it plain. The homeowner loathed the bitter caffeinated drink but continued to buy the cute little machine capsules for [Y/N]. Despite Scrooge’s generosity, he constantly pushed for [Y/N] to try to drink something healthier, like tea. But to no avail. They refused time and time again. His tea didn’t have enough caffeine for them to make it through the long and boring days, it wasn’t sugaring enough to please their tastebuds, it just wasn’t a good drink.
They sighed and grabbed their favorite Irish pot’o’gold themed mug out of the designated mug cabinet (little joys in life consisted of collecting unnecessary objects that reminded them of their father-figure, but in a “I’m making fun of you, this isn’t meant to be affectionate” sort of way). They placed the mug down by the whirring machine and paced the kitchen, waiting for the slow machine to brew a full pot.
“Good morning [Y]—.” Bentina froze in the kitchen entry way. She watched the young adult pace back and forth in front of the machine. “[Y/N], you shouldn’t be up and about just yet. What are you doing up?” She asked.
[Y/N] stopped in their tracks and glanced over at the housekeeper. “I never went to bed.”
“Oh…” Bentina’s voice trailed. “Dear, that’s not good.” She started.
“I don’t want a lecture about what’s good for me. I know what’s good for me and what’s not, Mrs. B. There is only so much I can control.” [Y/N] snapped. They watched Bentina closely. “Sorry.”
Bentina shook her head. “It’s quite alright, you’re exhausted/. Exhaustion causes irritation.”
“I suppose…” Their voice trailed.
“Mr. McDuck wanted to speak with you today, he’s in his study if you want to talk with him now.” Bentina walked past [Y/N] and continued with her house keeping duties. “And try not to drink your coffee in front of him.”
They smirked. “I’ll drink the whole pot in front of him.”
Bentina sighed and nodded. “I know you will.”
[Y/N] quickly grabbed the finished pot and with a newfound and mischievous energy. They made their way to Scrooge’s study, walking faster than their legs have been moving. They slunk past a groggy Donald, who barely managed a “good morning” as he passed them. [Y/N] nodded in response. They almost felt bad for Donald, but they remembered that he’s only tired because chose to join the McDuck family on their adventure, much like [Y/N] and virtually everyone else. The adventure was something… [Y/N] stopped in their tracks and shifted their thoughts from the events from yesterday to the pot of coffee in their hands. They quickly lifted the pot to their bill and chugged what felt like half of the pot (but in reality, it was probably only two large gulps worth of liquid). They continued their journey toward Scrooge’s favorite hiding place in the manor.
It was strange to [Y/N], being part of the McDuck family without actually being related to anyone within the manor. How it came about was nothing but a blur to the young adult because it literally happened in a blur. They stopped at the door to Scrooge’s study and knocked.
“Come in.” Scrooge bellowed from behind the cracked door.
[Y/N] pushed the door open and flashed their father-figure a tired and lopsided grin. “Mornin’.”
“Do I smell that disgusting drink?” He didn’t look up from his desk. “Close the door behind ya.”
“Mhm.” [Y/N] pushed the door closed behind them and walked toward his desk. They sat down on one of the two chairs in front of the desk. “Mrs. B said you wanted to see me this morning?” They asked.
Scrooge nodded, still not looking up from his desk. “Yes, but I wasn’t expecting ya this early!” He peered up at the young adult. “You’re still full’a surprises.”
“I don’t know what you mean.” They deadpanned.
Scrooge nodded disappointedly. “I know you don’t.”
The silence grew between them as Scrooge had begun to forget [Y/N]’s presence in his study in favor of finishing his work before the day had really begun. His bill was buried deep in financials for the Money Bin and requests and suggestions from the Board and complaints and other papers from his employees and papers upon papers for other things concerning the Money Bin. His desk was full of business things that [Y/N] refused to understand because it looked too tedious and time consuming, they would much rather do anything but business—adventuring, directing, teaching, dance, acting, retail, food service, anything but owning a business! Well, none of those things actually seemed like things [Y/N] would like, but sometimes they did like those things. From their own rising boredom of the world around them, they begun to suspect that Scrooge was going to drill them about their future again. He only did that because he cared about them and wanted nothing more than for [Y/N] to have a future (unlike Donald who became a freeloader and unlike Della who has a list of mistakes that matches the length of her lists of successes). [Y/N] wasn’t the only one Scrooge cared for, the children ought to have futures better than Donald and Della as well; he wanted the future, the new generation to be as successful as he is, if not more so.
“I don’t want another lecture about my future.” [Y/N] spoke up and pulled their father-figure out of his work.
Scrooge looked up at the duck and raised his eyebrows. “What made ya think we were going to discuss that?”
They shrugged their shoulders. “Honestly, it seems to be the only conversation we have anymore. I miss when I could tell you about why the sky is blue or why a car engine works.”
“But you don’t know how a car engine works.” Scrooge knitted his eyebrows together.
“That’s beside the point, Scrooge.” They sighed.
Scrooge leaned back in his chair. “Scrooge?”
“That’s your name and I ought to use it, right?” [Y/N] said.
He blinked. “You’re family.”
[Y/N] inhaled deeply. “Am I?”
“What do you mean?” Scrooge asked.
“I don’t really feel like family, I never have.” [Y/N] said. “And I don’t actually want to talk about that either. I don’t really want to talk to you about anything personal.”
Scrooge swallowed. “I wanted to talk to you about what I witnessed yesterday.”
“I don’t understand.” They said.
“We could’ve lost you. That was a nasty fall. You could’ve died.” Scrooge said firmly. “That was more than a 10-foot drop, [Y/N]. I’m surprised you walked away with scratches.”
[Y/N] inhaled sharply. “I’m fine.”
Scrooge shook his head. “No, I don’t think you are. Honestly, I was beginning to think you were going through a phase that was similar to Donald’s—you know, the one he doesn’t talk about. I thought you were just avoiding the family, being rebellious, and learning who you are. But I was wrong. You willingly let that happened and you laughed about it. You laughed and wished it had killed you.”
“I don’t know what you mean.” They played dumb.
Scrooge sighed. “You’re not well, whether you want to admit it or not. None of us are daft, it’s not like we haven’t seen it before. Sure, at first, we missed the obvious signs, but we all know better now and we’re all very worried about you. [Y/N], family is the greatest adventure of all, and it would be a shame if you weren’t part of that adventure. I don’t want to see a repeat of yesterday.” He said.
“You can’t stop how I feel.” [Y/N] deadpanned.
Scrooge shook his head. “No, but I can get you some help. I have friends who know people, Donald knows people. There are people out there who help people like you for a living.”
[Y/N] looked down. “Are you going to get rid of me?”
“That’s not what I said at all. We’re getting you some help.” Scrooge repeated himself.
“I don’t want—.”
“Instead of getting help, you decide to try to throw your life away?” He asked as he leaned forward on his desk.
“No—yes—I mean…” [Y/N] stuttered. “I don’t think I thought you cared about me. You’re not the greatest at… parenting. But I was never your child to begin with, I was just another problem you picked up along the way.
Scrooge looked down at his hands. “A problem, yes, but you’re my problem, [Y/N]. Whether you like it or not, you’re a part of my family and I will do everything for my family. I will spare no expense on keeping my family alive and well.”
“I still don’t want help.” [Y/N] said.
“I will raise your allowance if you take the help.” Scrooge said. “And I won’t complain about your coffee habit.”
[Y/N] thought for a moment. “Don’t tell the children either. I don’t want them asking me questions the way they do with Donald’s anger management.”
“Deal.”
“And I want to use karate as a cover up since that’s something I did in my youth and the children don’t know about it. Easy lie.” [Y/N] smiled sadly.
Scrooge furrowed his eyebrows. “You took karate?”
“I wanted to take ballet, but the karate studio was the only place that would take an orphan.” [Y/N] chuckled.
“That explains so much about you.” Scrooge chuckled along. “No more adding anything to our deal.”
“Fine.”
Scrooge smiled. “That’s the first time you’ve laughed in months.” “Don’t ruin it.” [Y/N] smiled. “Thanks, dad.”

Whumptober day 25: Silence is Golden
Fandom: Ducktales
Prompts;
Lost voice
Duct tape
"You better start talking."
I mean really, how could I not torture (it came out more implied than anything…) Donald? Also; sorry in advance for anyone who likes good parents Hortense and Quackmore…. And sorry its kinda short! These things keep loosing length, where did it all go??
The family tree was all over the place, to say the least, but one thing thats pretty common, is the tempers. You'd think they'd stop having kids eventually, a recipe for disaster for anyone you asked.
When the McDucks joined the family, it was a surprise to everyone. Hortense and Quackmore were at eachothers throats as much as they were head over heels. And when she got pregnant? Lets just say you didnt want to see her angry.
They didnt know what to expect, for the parents or children, but the other generations so far had done their jobs, they were sure the kids would be fine. They may fight, but they loved eachother, and they'd love the children too.
Itd be fine.
Donald and Della are turning 6, and Grandma Duck is throwing them a party. She hasn't seen much of her grandkids, holidays maybe, in pictures sure, so she wanted this to be the best birthday.
Shes more than ready when her son pulls up. He takes a moment to leave the car, talking to the twins before helping them from the back seats. She bends down with open arms, but it takes a nudge from Quackmore for the two to come in for a- stiff- hug.
"I'm sorry Ma, but I have to go. Hortense and I have a thing, thanks for taking care of them today though!"
"Oh, uh of course dear. You know im always delighted to see family."
"Thanks, you two be good."
She watches her son leave with a frown, before looking down at two of her grandchildren,
"Well then birthday kiddos, lets go have some fun yeah?"
Donald hasnt said a word. And Elvira knows he can, she might not have seen them often, but she remembers the few times she had. Shes thankful at least, that he seems to get along with his cousins, though hes rare to leave Dellas side.
Fethry finally pulls him away, and Elvira is quick to sweep down and smile at the birthday girl.
"Having fun Della?"
"Yes grandma. Thank you." She stands stiffly, hands fidgeting with her skirt.
"Of course dear, can I ask you something sweetheart?"
"...sure." She answers hesitantly.
"Why… why isnt your brother speaking dear?"
"Oh… Donalds lost his voice grandma. I've been tryin ta find it, but daddy- father says, that we should forget." She admits quietly.
"Lost… I see. Well, lets look together then, shall we?"
"Oh really??" Her eyes light up, "you'll help us look Grandma?"
"Yes, I'm sure the cousins could help too, lets go find that voice of his."
Later that year, Hortense and Quackmore die in a car accident. And Elvira takes the two in for a while, Scrooge had been in the will, but she wonders if he'll be up to the task. She'll be around either way, and she would find Donalds voice.
Donald wakes with duct tape around his bill. Its not a new occurance, he lives a life of adventure- whether he liked it or not. It seemed people really thought keeping him quiet scared him or something. He could understand if his voice annoyed them, but they always taunted the fact he couldnt communicate anymore like he didnt know at least 2 other ways to do so.
The villian of the week is monologuing, Della is sitting across from him, looking bored out of her mind. Donald makes a couple of eye and shoulder movements- twitches at best- that she responds with in a simular fashion.
"Hey! What are you two doing?!" He cuts off mid sentence to yell the question, as if they could answer with any more than a raised brow.
"You're not talking your way out of this. You'll be stuck in silence for the rest of your short lives, and I'll be living rich somewhere!"
Donald rolls his eyes, even as the guy kicks him for it. He was weak to say the least, though crafty enough to nab them. It was a chore more than anything though, Scrooge would come bursting in any minute, treasure in hand and ready to gloat and taunt for hours to come.
Two more minutes of angry ranting, Della mocking him everytime his back is turned, and Scrooge finally arrives.
"Get yer grimy hands off me wards!"
"McDuck! Er, no! I win this time! I have the upper hand!"
"Ye got nothing of the sort, these two trouble makers could have escaped ages ago." Their Uncle is wrong of course, Dellas pocket knife cut through her bindings a while ago. And Donald had gotten the knot undone a couple minutes after he woke.
Della shows off her free limbs cheekily, Donald rolling his eyes once more as he stands and stretches, gauging his injuries as he does so.
Scrooge does his whole thing, takes the guy down and turns to them with a lesson or lecture on his tongue, when he stops and gives them his equivlent of a worried look.
"Is the tape stuck?" He asks carefully.
Donald frowns, feeling the pull on his bill, and realizes he'd completely forgotten, and so it appears did Della.
The 12 year olds carefully pull the tape from eachothers bills, working their mouths to rid the ache. Apparently Donald was more used to it than he thought…
"You better start talking!"
Well thats a first. Donald could only remember a handful of people who wanted him to talk. There was far more times where people wanted him to shut up, and this guy wanted him to talk…
He looks to the kids behind him, six of them, all relying on him right now. He looks back to the villian with a glare,
"Let the kids go and I'll tell you." He says it slower than usual, over pronouncing to try and be understood.
"You're in no place to make demands Duck. Scrooge isnt coming this time, you start talking, or the kids start walking." He motions to the plank with a twisted smile, uncaring who he has to hurt for his gain. Gosh, this wasnt even an adventure this time. It was a reward trip for the kids, a vacation to help them relax and have fun like children. Scrooge wasnt coming, this was up to Donald, and he wouldnt let anything happen to them.
"The maps in the stars."
He gives instructions, piece by piece, keeping the kids behind him at all times. His hands stay behind his back, forming signs and shapes and tapping patterns. Donald is forced ashore with most of the crew, in hunt of the treasure, but he leaves the kids with clear instructions. He trusts them to complete them, while he handles the rest. After all, this treasure was still here for a reason.
The cave is shaped like a toothy mouth, gaping, dark and dank. Things move in the dark at the opening, but the further in they go, the less life there is. Statues in varying states line their path, Donald determinedly doesnt look at them, but he knows the crew is getting spooked.
"Its right through there." He says finally.
The captain swipes his blade and Donald goes down with a shout, arms pressed tightly to the slash across his body.
"Shut him up. Im tired of that voice. We have treasure to collect."
One of the men ties rope across his bill, and pulls his hands behind his back, aiming a kick to his wounded front, before the whole lot enters the last chamber of the cave.
Donald huffs and heaves, rope rubbing painfully at his bill and every breath pulling at his cut. Blood dripping from his collar bone to his hip in steady lines, he needs to get out of here and make sure the kids are okay. He hears shouts from within, cut off almost immediately after they start, and forces himself to roll onto his knees.
He stumbles his way from the cave, each statue a stablilizer as he goes. Horror and pain stricken faces on each, adventures and innocents long lost to the curse of this place. Even Glomgold had been wise enough to leave this one be, most saw the statues and wisely turned back. Scrooge had tried to go in, almost getting Della turned to stone in the process, before turning back.
One of the statues has a fallen sword by it, old and broken, but the jagged end still does the job of freeing his wrists. He presses his arms to his front once more as he hurried towards the ship. The kids are jumping off it as he arrives, running towards him. He drops down and catches the boys, the girls not far behind them, toppling them all over.
"Unca Donald! Youre hurt!" Louie is the first to notice, and Donald feels bad for the blood on their clothes.
His fingers move quickly as he tries to assure them hes fine. He feels the ropes slide off his bill and blinks a bit, Lenas hand stops glowing and Donald gives her a grateful smile. To prove he'll be fine, he stands, and motions towards the ship, he could get them going and find a first aid kit hes sure.
Donald had found his voice long ago, it had been taken from him often enough that he learned to communicate without it. And those that cared, had done the same. But they also took the time to learn his voice, luring it out of hiding and encouraging it. So that a lost voice would always find its way home.

Accidentally sent this before instead of saving a draft, but this is Beakley for the character meme from anon. I’m assuming they meant her 2017 counterpart.
First impression: “I actually kind of vaguely remember Beakley from the old show, and I don’t remember really liking her, but I guess I’ll give this one a sho-Oh my goodness, I love her so much. I can already tell she’s going to be a good mix of a reasonable authority figure and comically serious, and I wish those tropes got mixed together more. Also, good on her for being willing to call Scrooge out on not only treating her like a secretary, but also on him attempting to basically ignore his great-nephews.”
Impression now: “I’m so happy that she finally was able to tell the truth about her connection to Webby and now it seems like she’s just going to be more comfortable around her friends and everyone else because she doesn’t need to keep telling a lie to protect Webby from FOWL. I also love how she still clearly loves Webby like family and has complete and total faith in her abilities. Her pulling the life-jacket off as soon as Scrooge glanced away was seriously hilarious to me. Also, Beakley looks amazing with her hair down.”
Favorite moment: The whole flashback of her finding and adopting Webby. Just the idea of seeing this person who was so dedicated to her job as a spy giving all that up because she found this innocent child that honestly had nothing to do with her, but she knew she couldn’t let grow up in a place like FOWL, that she gave up her old life in order to focus on, really, being a parent. It doesn’t hurt that Beakley’s line about “finding a new mission” reminded me of the “You are my quest” line from Kubo and the Two Strings, which is one of my favorite love declarations ever.
Idea for a story: Just Beakley and Launchpad going to a convention together. I mean, you can’t have Beakley become a Darkwing Duck fan because of Launchpad and not have her get into the fandom at all, and I feel like it’d be so amusing to see her interact with other fans. Also, she’d need to properly meet and interact with Drake and Gosalyn.
Unpopular opinion: Not entirely sure how unpopular this is, but it always kind of bugged me how she came across like she was trying to tell Della how to be a parent in “Timephoon!” Though, that was admittedly more of an issue with the episode itself, since while Della was never shown to be perfect, she hadn’t come across as having quite as much of a “let them have fun at the expense of safety” since her first episode back with the family. But it did still bother me that it really did feel like Beakley was being kind of condescending to Della at times during that episode.
Favorite relationship: Her and Scrooge’s friendship honestly gives me so much happiness, especially with the reveal that after she found baby Webby and left SHUSH, she apparently trusted him so much that he was the first person she came to for help, and even though it’s implied he was still grieving the loss of Della, Donald, and the triplets, he still welcomed them into his home without any question.
Favorite headcanon: I actually made a post about this a while ago, but I don’t think Beakley was lying about the people in the photo Webby had being her daughter and son in law. In fact, I actually headcanon that, while they never had any children before they died, Beakley named Webby the name that her daughter and son in law had mentioned liking for a girl.

Propaganda below!
Princess Yue
She was blessed by the moon spirits than turned into the moon herself. No one can compete with that.
The Sokka & Zuko "Well, my first girlfriend turned into the moon." / "That's rough, buddy." meme is referencing Yue - that's the girlfriend that turned into the moon!
THE moon character of all time like c'mon. she turned into the moon. will her sacrifice be for naught??? she's yue from avatar the last airbender c'mon guys
She sacrificed herself to save her people even though she had just found someone who loved her as a person and not a princess. She's all about sacrificing her own wants for duty, and right when she starts to realize maybe that's a little unfair she has to become the moon spirit and leave behind all the people she loves.
And she's pretty.
How many characters are the literal moon. How many.
Bro. She's the moon. She IS the moon.
Vote Yue for Sokka's same
She's very much and selfless, becoming the moon spirit to save the world from permanent imbalance.
She IS the moon
That's rough, buddy
You know the meme "my girlfriend turned into the moon" "that's rough buddy". This is that girlfriend. This is that moon.
She literally is the moon.
She played a major role for a one-off character
Victim of forced marriage
Her interactions with Sokka were really funny
She has white hair, what's not to love
Legitimately I love her, underappreciated in the fandom for how great she is.
"My first girlfriend turned into the moon."
"That's rough buddy."
"My first girlfriend turned into the moon."
"That's rough buddy."
She died in a main character's arms & it fucked him up SO bad. It affects him thru to the end of the show & keeps coming up. LOVE it when main characters get traumatized!!
Della Duck
just look at her shes badass she amputated her own leg and made a prosthetic out of spare rocket parts shes not perfect but shes trying her goddamn best to be a good mother okay she is The character ever
greatest character of all time!
dear tournament runner i am so so sorry for the essay i'm about to write but i am not normal about my girl della
della duck is donald duck's twin sister and huey dewey and louie's mother
the whole history behind her is so interesting bc she unintentionally became the greatest mystery of the disney duck comic verse
one of disney's many weird rules is that their main 6 characters are not allowed to have children or parents. this rule is kinda wobbly in the sense that on one hand, it does get broken (goofy has a son in some canons & donalds mother is shown in some comics (though only in scrooge's flashbacks, she's never allowed to interact with donald)), on the other hand, it also tends to sometimes get applied to characters who are not part of the main 6 but still main characters. this rule meant, that when they wanted their main characters to interact with kids, they invented nieces and nephews. which had the added bonus that when they wanted to stories without them, they didn't have to explain the kids' absence (like for example mickey's nephews, which barely ever appear and, fun fact, were actually invented before huey dewey and louie). so, in one newspaper comic strip, huey dewey and louie were introduced and with them, della was mentioned for the first time, in a letter asking donald to take care care of the boys while their father is in a hospital from a prank they pulled.
