We see others’ holidays, achievements and other attributes of a successful life, then ask ourselves: ‘’Why can't I go to Paris like her? Why do I don’t look as good as she does?’’ We compare ourselves with others and become miserable, anxious and depressed. If we don’t check Instagram for some time, we get the F.O.M.O. (fear of missing out) syndrome, and worry all the time that we lose something important: news, events, and so on.  

The truth is, developers of Instagram, Facebook and other social media had been using the strategies of Las Vegas casinos, when they created their products. Which means, social platforms make us addicted. From the moment we open a notification, we lose consciousness. We just want to scroll and scroll the page until our dopamine needs are satisfied. Then we put our phones away, but later feel the need to check them again. All this builds in us a strong addiction, and that's the reason why we become itchy without access to our phones or the Internet.

Why do you think these platforms created likes, shares, and comments? It’s another strategy to make us addicted. Likes and shares are so-called ‘’social currency’’. When someone likes you, you feel the rise of dopamine. As a result, you endlessly check your account throughout a day in order to experience this pleasurable feeling again. Your friends, likes and comments are your social currency, and the more followers you have, the better you feel. 

However, in this way social media changes your mind and perception of yourself and others. If nobody likes your photo or writes you a comment, you feel unconfident and miserable, and sometimes even delete the ''inappropriate'' photo or post. Our identities are transformed by social media, and we are transformed into products. Your account is not just a profile anymore, it's your brand. On this people's market, if you are in high demand and have many fans, you feel satisfied. But if not, you will unconsciously fall into despair.

People make a lot of excuses for their social media addiction. ''It’s too risky, I'll lose my information and friends.'' Well, you should consider whether these people are friends if they disappear from your life after you delete your profile.

In today’s world, the ability to create rare and unique things is in demand. This means, if you have deep and needy skills which might help your clients or employers, these people will find you. Social media is just entertainment, not a business conference. If you don't have deep skills, you should focus on developing them, which means doing concentrated work without distractions. 

Others think that there is no real harm in scrolling Twitter or Instagram, ‘’and actually I don’t use it that much’’. As you already know, it causes real harm. When we are distracted on a daily basis for months and years, after some time we become unable to concentrate anymore. Our attention becomes fragmented, because we constantly interrupt ourselves. ''I just checked this mail, likes and comments.'' After all, thousands of these small ‘’checks’’ make you unable to concentrate even on easy tasks. You stop setting goals and wonder why you feel overwhelmed and exhausted. You become ineffective and completely unproductive. 

If you feel like I demonised social media in this text, I want to reassure you that I don’t. That’s just a fact that Instagram is a trap, and Twitter is a gambling automat. We should reconsider our perception of these ‘’innocent’’ platforms which steal our lives and make us unproductive, miserable and depressed zombies. Next time when you want to open your Instagram page, try to ask yourself ‘’What I want to find here? Will consuming this content change my life? How will I feel after this?’’ I hope that these questions will help you to choose a more healthy way to spend your time. And overall, delete your accounts.
