Volantul masinii, numit popular de toti soferii "volanta", este un element al transmisiei. Fiecare automobil este dotat cu volanta, aceasta piesa avand un rol dublu. Volanta este montata in capatul vilbrochenului si are ca rol transmiterea fortei de rotatie catre cutia de viteze, dar si rol de pornire a motorului. Mai precis, electromotorul invarte volanta care, avand o greutate mare, prin inertia sa, invarte vilbrochenul si toate pistoanele. Pe volanta se regaseste kitul de ambreiaj format din placa, disc si rulment. In momentul in care soferul calca pedala de ambreiaj, discul este ridicat de pe suprafata volantei si cutia de viteze nu mai preia nicio miscare de rotatie de la motor. Cand ridicam pedala, ambreiajul se cupleaza si discul se uneste cu volanta, ajungand sa se invarta la unison. Volanta cu masa dubla se intalneste in general la automobilele diesel, care au motoare grele cu volanta mare si care au un cuplu urias chiar de la rotatia de ralanti. Fara o volanta dubla, motoarele ar strica mult mai repede discul de ambreiaj, rulmentul de presiune si placa de presiune. Deasemenea soferii ar simti la ridicarea pedalei de ambreiaj niste socuri mai puternice. In plus, pentru ca motoarele diesel produc vibratii mai mari ca cele pe benzina, datorita volantei cu masa dubla aceste trepidatii nu trec mai departe spre cutia de viteze.
