Still she gets up and does her due diligence as a good daughter and goes to check if her dad is home. She goes to the kitchen first making her own breakfast then to her father’s bedroom and finally goes to the living room having found no signs of him and sits on their couch checking the clock that hangs above the tv, 5:34 which she clinches her jaw at in anger and stares at the clock with contempt hoping to burn a hole through it with sheer willpower alone. She’s not upset about the presence or lack there of her father- well she is but that isn’t the issue the problem is that to day is Saturday.
And while her dad usually isn’t here on weekdays his job a very demanding one and his passion in exposing the paranormal is coming to be a tireless and all encompassing pursuit, she at least has solace knowing that the weekends are hers.
That every Saturday she has the pleasure of waking up in the radio in the kitchen singing ‘La bamba’ and hear her father humming along while he makes her pancakes, knowing that the rest of the day will most likely be the two of them lounging around on the couch watching reruns of mysterious mysteries. Knowing that she gets to have a day where her father’s attention is all hers.
And sure she knows he’s been going on more monster hunting trips lately and that he’s been taking more cases for the swollen eyeball but he told her that it wouldn’t cut into their time together. He promised that they’d still have time for their weekend together that it didn’t matter how busy he was he’d always have time for her. today was supposed to be their time it was supposed to be their day and it’s more important today than any other Saturday because it was her birthday. And He promised to be home by 7:00 so that they had time to celebrate he even said he’d bring a cake.
So she sits on their old beat up couch a bowl of cereal in her lap she poured her self when she woke up practically untouched staring at the clock as the hour and minute hands tick down. She wonders if he’ll actually have remembered the icing she wanted on her cake or if he’ll have remembered the cake at all.
…she hopes it’s chocolate
———
It’s 6:53 an hour has passed and the minutes continue to go by. She’s starting to get hungry but she still doesn’t pick up her spoon to eat simply continuing to staring down the clock. Her stomach growls in protest begging her to eat, finally she relents and starts to eat her now soggy cereal she’s finally stopped staring daggers at the clock. Dib is still not home but she knows he’ll make it in time… she knows he wouldn’t miss her birthday.
she chances a glance at the time again it 6:54. She scowls a bit but shakes her head and goes back to eating. “He’ll be here” she says out into the silent room, “Please be here” she pleads. A few more seconds goes by…
‘knock knock’
Mitzi’s head snaps to the door her eye wide, she hears the sound of keys jiggling and the door knob unlocking. She stands up and quickly put her bowl on the table ready to run into her father’s arms and berate him for almost being late. The door opens and just as Mitzi makes a dash for the door she sees who’s behind it… and her heart sinks.
It’s auntie Gaz.
“hey kid, what’re you- woah you look worse than normal” Gaz raises an eyebrow at the disheveled child in front of her. Mitzi looks Down at herself realizing she’s still wearing her night clothes, a blue shirt that has saturn on it and in big font says science under it and hot pink shorts “huh, guess so looks like I just got out of bed, still better than the time dad made me wear a dress though.”
She gives an awkward smile, gaz opens one of her eyes in a deadpan stare unamused. Mitzi smile drops and she looks away trying to find something else to talk about. Gaz takes pity on her and shows her the bag she has, and takes out a game slave 4.
“so, kid how do feel about video games.” Mitzi’s eyes fill with excitement and a bit of competitiveness, and she gives gaz a sharp grin back and says “i don’t know how do you feel about losing.” With a smug attitude
“oh you are so going down”
“please like a grandma could beat me”
“You’re gonna regret those words.”
The next two and half hours were spent with both girls on the couch playing ‘pig hunter: battle for the bacon’ which distracted them from even noticing the clock on the wall ticking away.
As time passed the two got into a debate about which game slave console was the best which lead to another debate on which piggy hunter game was the best, and which one had the best graphics or better story telling and so on and so forth.
“Okay but you have to admit ‘piggy hunter in space’ was such an interesting concept”
”more like a money grab with no discernible plot, and the controls were even worse!”
“Oh c’mon you just don’t like it cause it had aliens in it”
”the aliens come out of nowhere what even was the purpose for them being there?”
“You just don’t know good-‘growl.” Mitzi goes quiet as her face grows red as her stomach grumbles, the realization that she barely ate one bowl of cereal now dawning on her. Gaz looks up from the game slave with a raised eyebrow but face still neutral. “Ahem what I was trying to say was—‘growl’ mitzi looks even redder than before. Gaz sighs and gets up
”c’mon let find you something to eat other than cereal”
mitzi follows her to the kitchen silently still embarrassed by her inability to take care of herself. she sits at the table quietly while Gaz rummages through their fridge for anything to make. Gaz hums as she look’s through the fridge as it’s almost empty except for a jar of pickles, half a gallon of milk, some mayonnaise and left over pizza “you’re dad needs to go grocery shopping, so I guess we’re having leftover pizza.” She looks back towards Mitzi who’s staring at the table in thought.
”that good with you kid” she speaks a little louder the she meant to which makes mitzi startling a bit then nod. “Uh yeah that’s fine” she mumbles before turning back to the table. Gaz looks at for a while before turning back and her a plate and brings it to the table. The two sit in silence for a while Mitzi picking at her food refusing to look up until Gaz speaks up.
“Listen I know you’re upset about dib missing your birthday, and honestly you deserve to be.” Mitzi looks at gaz confused, but gaz just looks at her and continues
“you don’t deserve to be forced to be okay with him missing important events in your life just because you know it’d make him feel bad. I know first hand what it feels like to be left alone and pretend it’s okay and the fact that he knows what it feels like makes this whole situation worse.” For the first time since she met her, she looks at her niece really looks her eyes tired but full of hurt and resignation, and her body tense with anger. And for the first time looking at her niece she doesn’t see her brother, she sees her self a scared little girl angry at the world and at a father who couldn’t be bothered to care.
She takes a deep breath before she continues “you deserve a father who recognizes you and you don’t need to placate him to earn that recognition.”
She takes her niece’s small hand much like the first time she saw her a little bundle in her brothers arms and says “you’re dad loves you a whole lot but he sucks at showing it.” She looks at mitzi and small smile tugging at her lips. “So if he’s not doing a good job of showing it come to to me and I’ll set him straight”
mitzi let’s out small giggle “is that code for I’ll kick his ass”
gaz grins and slides a slice of pizza over to Mitzi they both grin and finish eating.

🛸Hazelville PART 1🛸
(( Warnings: Course language, Vomit in this part, like a hot flash thingy))
Dib was driving past a large field with tall grass, Gaz was sitting in the backseat playing a game on a handheld console. Zim is sleeping in the passenger seat and Tak is listening to music. Dibs car jerks and stops, Tak looks up, confused and scared. " what was that?.." she asks nervously, " damn, we ran out of gas. " Dib groaned, he gets everyone out of the car and started looking around. They see a small town in the distance so they start wandering to it, Zim keeps looking back , he looks nervous. " calm down, you twink." Gaz says, annoyed with everyone. Tak felt weird about going into this weird town, when they got there her stomach started growling loudly " dib..I don't feel good." She whispered, clutching onto Dib's shirt tightly. He looked at her with concern and held her close. It seemed like it was happening every time she had been away from home for a while. A sudden wave of nausea hit her and she doubled over and fell to the ground. "shit!" Dib exclaimed and knelt down beside her , Tak is panting heavily " my tallest..look at Tak being dramatic again." Zim says with an exasperated sigh, Gaz glares at him " should we get her something to drink?..I saw a gas station." Gaz says quietly, Tak nods and Gaz holds Tak. She walks her into the empty gas station and gets her a blueberry slushie, helping her drink it slowly. When she was done with it, she went straight to throwing up into the toilet. Zim watched her from outside " HA! Look at her, so pathetic!" he shouts, " shut the fuck up, you little twerp! " Tak said through gritted teeth. She stood up and vomited into the bin. Dib helped hold her steady until she could breathe again. She smiled weakly at him." urgh.. thanks." she stood up, grabbing a bottle of water on the way out. Gaz kept her close to her, they kept walking.

currently working again on an old fic, not sure if i will ever post it but i would love to start drawing and sharing bits of it
It’s called Rise of Defects, i am not the most consistent person so i don’t really trust myself to post and regularly update it
I might release it to ao3 as a way to archive

Lab visit
Zes turned on her Pak flashlight as they finally arrived at the place. As expected the entire place was covered with dust, but otherwise the place still had a bit of power to it. A part of her kept thinking she should have waited before trying this.
That or telling people this is more than a scavenging run. Probably just some fucked up things and that's it.
“Let’s get this pointless endeavor over with.”
Zes almost glared at Tak’s commentary. Though, if she had to have anyone tag along this was the better option. Before she would have just gone alone.
She sighed. "You know why if you read those same papers. Well, maybe we'll get lucky and find something to take back. Maybe make the trip worth it."
I would be surprised if she didn't read all that with how much time she was in the escape pod. Still have no idea how I'm gonna tell dad about this. Especially since things might be happening soon.
She pushed the thought of Dre's concerning message out of her head and pushed forward. The entire place smelled rotten. The sludge in some of the containers said enough about where it came from. Even the tools they came across had various shades of blood.
“The question remains as to how you discovered a place like this?" Tak looked at her for a moment before keeping her usual watch. She was taking much more seriously than Zes expected.
At least I don’t have to listen to the complaining. Though I probably would have left well enough alone if Miyuki didn’t have the reaction she did.
Zes shrugged. "I just followed the data lines from when I first found that old research data. This was just the closest location."
Some of the old equipment still had some decent crystals that could be used as conduits so she took those for her bag. Though, these were mostly used for laser equipment. Didn't take a genius to figure out how that was used here.
Still don't know how I should take that I was technically made by someone like this. Though I suppose that matters little. I already did the biggest fuck you to whoever this was by lasting this long.
“Get out of your thoughts, time to move on.” Tak was waiting patiently, almost like she could tell where her thoughts were going with all of this.
Zes glared. “The whole point of the exploration is to look things over. You were taking watch anyway.”
Tak looked almost shocked at what Zes implied but returned to her normal expression. After all the fights they have had, Zes did trust her to watch things as she looked over what she found in this old lab. Though she had a point about how long they were lingering.
"You are the one overly excited to not miss meeting that parental unit you were waiting on. I'm following your rules here."
Yet you still wanted me to buy you takeout. Yeah, I do want to meet dad, but this place doesn't feel right. Even without a schedule, I wouldn't stay here for long anyway.
00000
The next room had various pods lined up. The usual equipment was there, but the main focus was the center of the room. It looked like an operating table. This was one room she had no interest in taking anything that looked useful.
Though her interest peaked as she spotted a terminal by the desk. There should be enough power left in the area to at least extract any data she could find.
"Ok, after I get what's on here I say we're done. Just keep an eye out for any giant bugs." That was the joke she made when she was talking to knelt before. Though, it was true that normally there are just really big bugs in places she explores.
Just got to be a bit careful with this. No telling what crazy did to protect their things. Though, I’m better.
She put her clone flash drive in and started copying each file as she typed the countermeasures. She doubted the owner was still around, but there was no harm in covering her tracks. Meanwhile, Tak was taking to examining the pods.
While Zes was busy with the computer, Tak saw each individual that was in there. Some looked mummified. While others just looked horribly mutated. She tensed as she turned back to keep watch for anything else.
“Hurry it up, some of these pods have live occupants.”
Guess Dre might be right on the whole doing stupid things. Though, I am never gonna tell him that. Just a little bit longer and I’ll have what I need to leave.
Just as Zes finished the data extraction, one of the pods started to break. Something sprayed on Tak's face before she stepped back. Various forms of mutant creations were released and started going toward the two fresh faces.
Tak glared as Zes went over to join her. “I thought you said you were going to be careful.”
Right, of course, the terminal would have had a fail-safe against unauthorized users. Whoever this science lady was, she's that good. Fuck.
"Yeah, well I can't get it right all the time." She tossed one of her bombs at the head of the one that was approaching her. She had to quickly get another one out as it was still moving.
Tak quickly hopped over her shoulder and stabbed what was hidden on the mutant's back. Now that Zes saw it, she noticed it on all the escapees.
"They are just corpse puppets. You can take them out quicker." Tak looked like she was struggling with something but she put that out of her mind and focused on what was in front of her.
The only reason these things survived was they had Irken Paks strapped on them. She glared as she knew where to aim some of her bombs.
She better not think I don’t notice the smoking that is coming from her Pak. Well, been a bit since I had to take a fight seriously.
The teen ducked and bounced around with a speed that would keep the creatures just out of reach. All while keeping their attention on her. Tak was still holding her own with a few well-placed knife attacks to take out a few.
She glared at Zes as they were finally nearby. "Are you finished jumping around yet?" The irritation in her voice was apparent.
Yeah, that didn’t sound right. I thought she would notice. Well, close range never really was my style.
Zes pulled out a trigger. Normally, when she uses her bombs, she combines a button with timing so they go off right where she aims to throw them. Though that doesn't mean she never had a regular trigger handy.
While she was hopping around, she tucked a bomb near each one of the mutants Paks. The only reason she could do that without splitting her focus was that Tak was still doing good with her group of enemies.
With a push of the button, each explosion took out what was left of the room. Though that didn’t mean they could relax just yet. The entire time they were fighting, what was left of an alarm was going off. They had to go before discovering what else might be left alive in here.
“Come on, time to get going before we get locked in.”
Tak nodded as they both ran towards where Zes parked the ship. Though as they ran out of the room, an Irken with yellow eyes appeared on the screen for just that moment before vanishing.
She was right as the place was trying to go into lockdown. They got to the ship just in time before the final door closed. Tak looked exhausted but Zes put that out of her mind to start the take-off sequence. Lucky for them, the docking doors were broken a long time ago.
Nice try, but I’m still better. Though probably omit this part of the story if someone asks.
Zes sighed in relief as they finally entered deep space on the route back to Earth. There was one last thing she had to do before she could fully relax. She approached Tak before looking at her Pak. It was still smoking.
“Let me take a look.”
Tak glared as she backed away. “I said it was fine. I can handle it.”
Bullshit, you got sprayed by something right before it happened.
"If it spreads, then it can damage more than just what broke. I know basic Pak repair. Don't be dumb Tak." Zes's eyes narrowed as she waited. The last thing she wanted was to help with major repairs because the girl was being stubborn.
Tak sighed before turning around and opening her port. Zes wasn't oblivious as to how much trust that would take. It's handling your very being with someone. As much as Tak gets on her nerves, she wouldn't put down what she was trying to do.
As she looked careful, Zes spotted the offending part. It was the emotional inhibitor. With how much it fried, the removal was simple. Though that could explain a lot in those last few moments they were in there.
Well, it’s my fault it happened so I’ll point her in the right direction if she asks.
She just handed Tak her broken inhibitor before closing up her Pak. “Do I have to ask?”
Tak just glared before pushing Zes off the chair. "It was barely working, to begin with. An easy adjustment and it will change nothing going forward."
Is she trying to convince me or herself? Well, that might also explain something from the past week or so. Guess I'll just take her word on it.
Zes just got up and dusted her skirt. “Fine, have it your way. I’ll keep an eye on our course.”
At this point, the sooner they were back on Earth, the better. That was the only benefit of the location being close by.
Should be back by tomorrow night if we skip the food run.

He wanted Dib to beg for his life.
Dib has become his life.
Ficlet under the cut.
“Fuck, Zim!” Dib reaches up to gingerly press his fingers to his nose and feels the thick blood pooling down past his mouth. “I swear to god, you fucking bug, if you’ve gone and broken my nose again I’ll-“
“-Shut up!” Zim shrieks, pak legs unfurling and clanking onto the concrete. He rises above Dib and encroaches slowly, legs clacking with each step. “You.. you worm! Do you have any idea what you could have done?”
“Dude, it was just some papers. I didn’t even read them for christ’s sake. They’re in Irken, you of all people should know I’m slow at translating that chicken scratch of yours.” Dib looks forlornly at the stack of crumpled papers a few feet away, scattered and likely marked with a spray of Dib’s blood. He turns back to look up at Zim when he snarls, reaching out a gloved claw to shove Dib back hard.
“They’re not for you, they’re Zim’s private papers!” Zim leans further over Dib, tongue curling and spitting flecks of saliva onto Dib’s face. Dib scrubs at his face, remembering how disrespectful spitting is considered in Irken culture. It burns a little.
“I don’t give a shit what they are. I didn’t even mean to touch them! I just wanted to put my crap down.” He meets Zim’s eyes. They’re a deep red and set in a foul expression. “I’m not interested in your secrets. You can keep those. It’s not like I don’t know everything anyway.”
Zim stiffens and Dib’s expression softens despite himself. He runs a tired hand through his hair and steels his gaze.
“You don’t really think I’m that big of an idiot, do you? You’ve just been quietly shoving your fat green head into my life over the last year and suddenly you save my life. I don’t know man, a guy spends his entire life trying to kill you and then just stops you from bleeding out some random Tuesday? That was weird.“ Dib shrugs, looking away briefly.
“That does not mean anything, Dib-worm. You were bleeding all over my base, it was disgusting. Zim had to stop it somehow.”
Dib shakes his head.
“It’s okay, Zim. I know we’re friends. I don’t know why, and I don’t care to know - but I know you’re lost and don’t know where to go. I know, and it’s okay. I’m lost too. We can be lost together. Your leaders, the Tallest -“.
“Don’t.” Zim grits out, quiet in a way Dib has never heard, didn’t know was possible. Physically, he begins trying to reach one hand out to soothe, to touch, to reassure. Mentally, he begs his sister to come collect his corpse once she realises what most likely happened to him. Damn it, he hopes she realises.
He isn’t that surprised when Zim lunges at him, but he wishes he’d had more time to brace before an Irken claw punches into his chest to grab at the material of his shirt. He wheezes a little.
“You do not know what you speak of, you pathetic slime! Do not mistake your loneliness for Zim’s. Zim doesn’t need you, Zim doesn’t need this dust bowl of a planet. One more fucking word and I’ll finish what that disgusting cryptid creature started last year.”
The human swear word sounds weird coming out of the alien’s mouth, but it’s not the first time. He’d only ever heard Zim swear once before - specifically when he got shredded by a cryptid in the woods and, in a blood-loss haze, made his way to Zim’s base to start bleeding out on his frenemies floor. He knows how hard it is to admit how miserable you are on the inside, especially to the people that matter most.
Well, he had made it this far.
“I know you Zim, and it’s okay.”
Zim’s quiet for a moment before he speaks, clenching his jaw.
“Beg.”
“What?”
“Zim told you, one more word. Now you beg for your pathetic life, you insolent worm.”
“I’m not going to - Zim, stop it. You know I’m right. I care about you too! It’s fine!”
Zim snarls, fist clenched, pak legs raising him to his full height. Dib’s heart drops when he sees one leg glint as it lifts itself behind Zim, preparing to strike.
Fuck, fuck, fuck. He might actually die today. Shit.
“Beg!”
“No!”
“Beg!”
Shit. The leg is calibrating.
“I’m all you have! Kill me and you’ll have nothing. You know it too!”
Zim stops. The leg pauses. His eyes are wide, frightened, conflicted. He chokes out a pained sound, continuing to clench and unclench his fist. He yanks Dib closer by the shirt still tangled in his fist. Dib breathes heavily.
“Beg Zim not to kill you.” His voice is raw, tired. His eyes roam over Dib’s face, carefully categorising and assessing. The stilted pak leg drops back to the ground.
Dib’s whole body un-tenses despite the proximity. The alien’s face turns slowly into a somewhat unreadable resignation.
Dib swallows the lump.
“Please.” He whispers quietly. Swaying, pressing forward.
“You fool.”

Catching Flies (Revised) Ch. 16
Chapter 16: Reality is Subjective
Overall rating: Teen
Summary: You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. That’s what they say anyway.
Teacher!Reader makes the mistake of trying to help the two most troubled kids in your class. This leads to forming a science club, learning some childhood psychology, adopting an alien older than you, and somehow catching Professor Membrane’s interest.
Afab Non-binary Reader;
The reader does have a last name: Nemo– which means no-name.
Chapter One |Master post |Ao3
**Several minutes earlier**
"Are we going to talk about the fact you called my dad and Mx. Nemo 'my tallest?'" Dib asked, an impish grin on his face as he followed Zim, who had long let go of his hand.
"No!" Zim hissed. "As far as I'm concerned, it never happened!"
"But you did."
"I did not!"
"I was right there, Zim. You totally called them your Tallest."
"The mighty Zim makes no mistakes!" Zim suddenly stopped and spun to face Dib, his eyes narrowed at Dib's delighted expression. "Foolish Dib-stink! You think I, the mighty Zim, would lower himself to call those two meat-bags my Tallest? That I would find them intelligent and honorable enough to think of them that highly?!"
Dib didn't even waiver for a second. "You must, because that is definitely what you called them."
Zim snarled, and Dib quickly realized he might have pushed the alien a little too far. Before he could act, Zim pounced at him, tackling the boy to the ground.
"Zim! No! Get off!"
"Not until you admit defeat, Dib-stink!"
"I'm not saying it's a bad thing!" Dib defended, both verbally and physically as they wrestled each other, completely ignorant of the looks they were drawing. "My dad is the smartest human on Earth right now! And Mx Nemo's the first adult to treat us like actual people!"
"Your paternal unit doesn't even acknowledge that alien life exists, and Mx Nemo can hardly understand your primitive computer system!"
"I'm not saying they're perfect! I'm just saying I can understand why you see them as higher authorities! They treat you a lot better than your old Tallest did!"
Zim went still, sliding off of Dib and sitting despondently on the ground. Dib took the opportunity to sit up, brushing the dust off his black coat as he warily watched Zim for a few moments.
"I-I don't really mean to make fun of it," Dib admitted after a moment. "I mean, I have nothing but respect for both of them, obviously. And I guess I'm kind of…happy? Excited? That you feel the same. Because it means we aren't enemies anymore. We're friends now, right?"
"Irkens don't have friends," Zim responded, more out of reflex than anything. The despondency in expression faded, replaced with something akin to embarrassment. "But…we are partners. Allies."
Dib figured it was as close as he was going to get, and a lot more than he ever believed possible. Hell, if someone told him he was going to be friends with Zim just a few months ago, he would have called them crazy.
"Ah ha, you two must be the students from inter-city middle skool!"
Zim and Dib looked up at a…person. Both Zim and Dib narrowed their eyes at the man that looked like something far too large stuffed inside a suit made to look vaguely humanesque.
"I think that's actually worse than your human suit on peace day."
"Hey, cut me some slack! I had less than twelve of your earth hours to plan that!"
***
No. No no no. You couldn't be stuck.
"Mx Nemo?" You could hear the professor, but couldn't respond. Not as the anxiety and panic gripped at you. You weren't usually claustrophobic but the bright blinding whiteness and cramped space as you tucked in closely to Professor Membrane's large frame, and your fears jumped at the chance to consume you.
"Mx Nemo." Large, firm hands gripped your shoulders, grounding you somewhat. You stared up at him, able to see his eyes clearly through his goggles, dark eyebrows knitted in concern. "I am sincerely sorry, I realize now that was a very bad joke."
Joke. It was a joke. You slumped against him in relief, not thinking as you punched him half heartedly in the chest--his shoulder too far for your to reach. "You had me for a moment there," you admitted.
His hands still gripped your shoulder, though not quite as tightly. "Humor is not exactly one of my stronger skills," he explained rathwr weakly, which was odd coming from him.
"I'm going to get you a book of dad jokes," you joked weakly in return, still leaning against him as your heart slowly returning to normal. "Or-or science jokes. Something."
"I really am sorry."
You shook your head, looking up at him. "It's okay. But let's focus on finding the boys."
He tightened his grip for a moment before letting go. He turned, focusing on the blank wall, confusing you as he held his hand against the wall, but looking intently at his phone's display. But instead of asking, you kept silent and watched as he moved his hand along the seamless wall slowly.
Did he have some kind of tech in his glove? Considering who he was, your guess was that it was far more advanced than the shoulder-length rubber glove it looked like. It probably was able to scan all sorts of things.
"There's too much interference," Professor Membrane growled to himself, stuffing his phone away. You despaired for a moment, maybe he hadn't been joking after all, when he pulled the glove off his arm.
Oh. Oh.
Your silence becamed stunned at his prosthetic arm. The intricate finger joints moved silently and fluidly as he searched the panel. There was a small blip of green light against the white, and the panels slid apart the reveal an electrical panel.
"Well aren't you a beauty. Look at this work, Mx Nemo. Someone put a lot of time and care into wiring this. But…" The Professor's tone shifted for awe into dubious. "These flux capacitors are overkill for a simple elevator. The energy transmitting through these rival that of Membrane Labs. Why would a convention center need this kind of energy?"
"What did our boys get into this time?" You swore softly. This was not what you had imagined when you realized the pair had wandered off. Unfortunately, it was right up their alley nevertheless.
You missed Professor Membrane's glance at your (unintentional) choice of words. "They'll be fine," he tried to assure. "Between their intelligence and tenacity, I estimate that the chances of them being grievously harmed is less than twenty-five percent."
Those were good odds, right? You tried to convince yourself it was, but that fear and worry continued to gnaw at your stomach.
Thankfully, before you could worry to much, the doors opened, revealing another long hallway, the same bright white walls lining the hallway. Professor Membrane led the way, his phone still blinking with Dib's location.
The place was a maze, with the hallways twisting and turning, each one looking the same. You would have been lost a thousand times over.
After a few twists and turns, you could hear someone speaking in a forign language, only for Zim's unmistakable laughter to abruptly interrupt.
"You idiots! You dare try to intimidate the mighty Zim?! Ha! I'm Irken's greatest invader! Bow and tremble in fear! Tremble!"
There was more chattering as you and Professor Membrane tried to hurry. He was quickly outpacing you with those long legs of his, virtually forcing you into a run.
Whatever you expected, it wasn't Professor Membrane suddenly stopping and subsequently crashing into his back. "Well, that is...quite unexpected."
You peeked around him and paled at the aight.
Were those...koalas? Six feet tall, fuzzy grey and white with large eyes that stared directly back at you. You numbly noted the futuristic armour protecting their chest and limbs as they briefly raised on their back legs and bared their teeth in a snarl.
Koalas...did not have sharp spiky teeth.  Nor were they as tall as you were.  Or decked out with weapons.
"Dad! Mx. Nemo!" Dib's voice cut through your astonishment. Relief swept briefly through you as you affrimed that both boys seemed unharmed.
Then the not-koalas roared something that sounded like a foreign language towards Dib and Zim. The not-Koalas pointed weapons at both the children as well as you and Professor Membrane.
"You dare call the might Zim a liar?!" Zim spat back while Dib paled slightly. Mechanical spider-like appendages unfolded from Zim's backpack, two supporting the boy into the air while the points of the other two sizzled with red electricity. "You dare threaten the mighty Zim's Tallest?!"
"Boys!" You shouted, moving towards them only to have the Professor shove you behind him, his gloves virtually disintegrating, revealing both arms were robotic prosthetics, and vibrating with white energy.
"Children, get behind me." Membrane commanded firmly.
Zim hissed, "Invaders do not hide! We destroy those before us!"
"You're not an invader anymore!" Dib argued. "You're one of us now!" Zim's response was just a sibilant hiss.
"I am so confused," you admitted from behind Membrane, peering behind him. Space Koalas. Robotic arms and spider limbs.
"I think we must be having a relapsing hallucination from memebraclets." Membrane admitted, though he sounded really doubtful.
"Yeah, I still doubt that was the real story," you said distractedly. "I never had one or was around it, and I still remember everything too clearly."
"Well, with the only other explanation would be that were actually intelligent life, and we went through multiple wormholes and possibly even a blackhole. Which is scientifically impossible."
"Aliens are real, dad!" Dib interjected loudly, gesturing to the non-koalas. "This is real! Not a crazy dream! They are here to abduct the smartest, most imaginative children to use as computers!"
"Their disgusting habits are known through the galaxy," Zim spat. "They deserve to be obliterated from exsistance."
"We were trying to convince them to leave peacefully." Dib stressed.
You were so confused. You had started looking for them expecting they had wandered off exploring or getting into trouble.
But. Aliens. So absolutely alien. The implications that this summer was real. The red sky with planets hanging heavy in the sky. The alien ships. The endless void of a black hole.
Feeling like you were being ripped apart atom by atom and compressed into an infinitely small point at the same time.
"It was real?" You whispered.
"No. No, it couldn't be real," Professor Membrane stated firmly, shaking his head. "This can't be real. It's scientifically impossible. We would have seen signs, discovered radio signals, something." There was a desperate denial in his tone as Membrane clenched his fists.
The alien-koalas made a noise that sounded like a laugh, interspersed with guttural clicks and growls. Zim snickered while Dib protested. "What?! Are you serious? All of that was a joke? You've been purposely avoiding humans?!"
"Well, to the intelligent beings of this quadrant, you aren't exactly that sharp. Playing with lesser beings is quite amusing," Zim chimed with a snicker, only adding to the confusion.
Dib had accused him at first of being an alien… but surelt not. Surely not. "No. No way." You hadn't befriended and taught an alien for that several months.
Yet it was making so much sense. The advanced knowledge, being abandoned. The technology. Dib was the son of the world's most intelligent man, but Zim…
Or was this actually a dream and that's why it was making sense? It felt so real, but didn't all dreams? You were so confused and torn, and you had the feeling Membrane next to you was just as lost judging by his stiff posture and heavy silence.
Just...just focus on what was important, and leave all those questions for later. Whether it was a dream or not, you had to focus on the here and now and worry about the implications afterwards.
"Leave them alone," you commanded with more bravery than you felt as you stepped forward, away from the protective form of Professor Membrane. You heard him whisper your name, quiet enough you were sure that it was an unintentional slip. You squared your shoulders and glared with as much authority as you could muster. "You leave those boys alone and leave this planet."
The alien-koalas growled, clicking their teeth.
"You dare threaten my Tallest!" Zim hissed, the energy at the end of his mech-spider legs flaring and threatening to fire. "You dare threaten the mighty Mx. Nemo?"
"Hallucination or not, I cannot allow harm to come to my son, his friend, or Mx. Nemo."
There was something encouraging about being flanked by a tall, broad-shouldered scientist with two mechanical arms whirring as they powered up, and a possible alien with lasers. Dib seemed to feel the same as he stepped between you and his father, looking rather stern faced as well.
Except, instead of being threatened, the alien-koalas just chittered, a mocking kind of chittering that set your nerves on edge.
The place erupted into laser fire. There was no time to think, only react. You grabbed Dib and pulled him behind the sturdy frame of his father, protecting him as best as you could. Sparks and fires erupted as energy blasts landed all around the control room.
"Get out of here!" Professor Membrane shouted. The way you came was clear, so you dragged Dib with you towards the corridor.
"Zim! Come on!" You and Dib shouted once you reached to safety of the corridor.
"Invaders don't run away!" He snarled back, zapping the control panel which burst with a shower of sparks.
"You're not an Invader, you're my student!"
That made Zim pause, and it was all the Professor needed. He fired a shot rather reminiscent of an anime character before grabbing one of Zim's robotic legs and yanked the boy off balance and towards the corridor. He tumbled, the legs retreating into his pak, and before he recovered, you plucked him off the ground, holding him as if he was half his (assumed???) age as you ran down the hall, barely aware of where you were going. All you cared about was getting away from the cacophony of explosions and making sure Dib was keeping up beside you.
Shortly, however, he too was scooped up as Professor Membrane caught up with you. "This way!" He commanded, turning a corner. "Their systems are more volatile than anticipated."
"It's possible we may have activated the self-destruct," Zim said, holding on to you while looking behind. "Or that they did, realizing they had been defeated by the mighty Zim!"
"Not sure we won this one," Dib chimed. You were inclined to agree with him, but it was taking all you have to keep with the Professor's pace while carrying Zim. Your legs and lungs burned, but you kept pushing yourself harder.
Thankfully, there was another corner and the elevator appeared. Or at least an elevator. You all but collapsed against the wall while Membrane jammed the call button.
Except the doors opened to reveal a void instead of the blinding white elevator from before. "Where's the elevator?"
"Not above us," was Professor's answer as he peered into the darkness. "And neither can I detect it below us. I'm not sure if I possess enough power to carry all of us out…"
"Get the boys out," was your automatic response. Especially as you could both hear and feel explosions and fire creeping closer. You tried not to think of what was going to happen to you, and focused on the students safety. The innocent people above.  "Just--get them out. Evacuate the building."
Professor Membrane looked back at you, managing to convey his concern. "I find myself wanting to reject that idea despite the fact it's logical."
"We are not leaving you," Dib agreed with his father.
"You humans are disgustingly stupid sometimes," Zim growled as he extended his spiderlegs once more and grabbed Dib. "I trust you can at least carry Mx. Nemo?"
"I-I'm not sure about this," Dib panicked, but Zim neither gave him nor Professor Membrane time to say anything before jumping into the void, the spindly robotic legs quivering as they caught both his and Dib's weight before skittering upwards like a true spider.
"This hallucination is stranger than the last."
"God, I hope this is a crazy dream," you agreed before another explosion drew closer. This felt so real that you didn't have the courage to test out that theory.
Yet, at the same time, you weren't sure what Professor Membrane's plan was, and you were too nervous to ask.
"Right  dream or not," Professor turned towards you, arms open. "Shall we?"
"Er…" was your very eloquent response as you stepped closer.
"I haven't carried anyone besides my children, so I do apologize in advance," was his response before suddenly lifting you up, one hand bracing your back and the other beneath your knees as he held you close.
Your squeak turned into a scream as he stepped into the elevator shaft, dropping sharply. There was a click and suddenly you were shooting upwards. All you could do was clutch to Professor Membrane's neck and bury your head into his shoulder, barely aware of him gripping you a little tighter in response.
After what felt like forever, the ascent slowed. You looked up and saw the faint light shining from the elevator doors that had been forcibly pried open. Emergency lights strobed, the sirens overwhelmed as by yelling and screaming in the Expo building as people hurried for the exits.
Professor Membrane set you down, though his hand quickly grasped yours as you both made your way towards where the boys were. They were hard to miss, considering Zim’s mad cackle and the Rover drove circles around them, fire erupting from one of his robotic arms.
“Really?” you panted as you reached the pair, gasping for breath. Rover stopped, the fire cutting off quickly. You weren’t even sure who your exclamation was pointed at, but Dib only gave a half hearted shrug as patted the Rover on its head.
“We didn’t know how else to evacuate everyone. They were all standing around even after we pulled the fire alarm.”
“Now they run in fear of the mighty Zim! And Dib!” Zim was quick to tack on as soon as the other boy glanced at him.
“I think this conversation would best be continued outside,” Professor Membrane interrupted before Dib could respond. The phone that had tracked Dib was now emitting a shrill alarm of its own. “This structure is highly likely to collapse from the impending seismic activity.”
The ground rumbled beneath your feet, faint at first but quickly growing until you were having to hold on to Professor Membrange to keep from falling over.
“Run!”
Dust and debris rained down as you tried to navigate your way out of the expo center, through the maze of long abandoned science projects. IF it wasn;t for the fact Professor hadn’t let go of your hand as he more or less dragged you behind him, you were sure you would have gotten lost. Though, you could faintly make out the light flashing off Zim’s robotic spider legs as he raced over the displays, and the Rover, carrying Dib, weaving through the tables like it was nothing.
The doors opened to a sunny afternoon, yet the chaos had spread outside. People were scattering everywhere, panicked screams and crying  filling the air.  The tremors were becoming noticible further and further away from the building, to the points cracks were forming in the pavement under your feet.
A large one in particular formed that Professor Membrane just easily strided over with his long legs, but instinct quickly stopped you in your tracks as it screamed you wouldn't make it. Your hand slipped from his and you slid to a stop, harshly landing on you butt.
The crack just kept growing larger and larger, steam, or maybe it was smoke, escaping with a hiss.
"Mx. Nemo!" All three boys called out, having quickly noted your absence. They were moments away from taking the leap themselves. That was all the encouragement you needed. You backed up a few steps before rushing forward and jumping over the gap.
And, as you feared, you didn't make it. You felt yourself fall before you could reach the other edge, just shy of brushing the jagged rock. Below you could feel heat rise from whatever was exploding below to cause the mock-earthquake.
Several somethings grabbed you from mid air, yanking you up and slamming you against the concrete on the other side before you could scream.
You blinked as Zim's spider legs retreated  and the three looked down at you. "Ow."

You know, I think there was a real moment of clarity achieved here with the revelation that he's the thing most likely to get in his own way. That's like, the most self-awareness he's shown over the entire course of IZ canon, I'm almost proud. It's too bad about the brain damage, but,

Zes sat down on the couch next to Miyuki as soon as Zim went to go collect Gir. Moments like this have happened since the day they were stuck with each other.
"So, what's up?"
Miyuki sighed as she looked at Zes. "I'm not exactly parent material am I?"
There is a big question. How should I know?
"Probably not like how humans would be. Even I only went with mom, because that was easier." She knows it was just Miyuki's way of being honest.
That was why she still respected her a lot.
Miyuki sighed. "You do know the truth. The way you are requires more than I can normally give."
That your emotional regulator still works sometimes. That's why I still have to go to that dumb school.
"I say I learned well from this parent. Kinda why I'm staying on the network." It's what the teen decided. Especially since last night.
The woman looked relieved she was still called a parent. "I prepared you as much as I could. I still will. Just don't handle it all."
Like you don't. You already check a million things and still do more. Still hiding something though.
"Fine, but I'm not taking back my purpose on it."
Miyuki smiled. "I wouldn't expect less. Your brother is a brat, but he's still willing to follow you anywhere."
Yeah, I know Zim can handle himself. A little chaos never hurt anyone.
