i’ve been meaning to answer this one for a while so here’s how i painted miku in today’s post (put under the read more because yeah prepare for a long post

i’d also like to preface this by saying that i never follow a set way of doing things, so in terms of what my personal process is like, these are only broad strokes of what i do! sometimes i’ll combine or skip parts entirely, depending on how i feel. also, this is not a tutorial, just how i do things, so please don’t treat it like one :’D this will read like the ‘how to draw an owl’ picture if you do

first, like every artist, i sketch. more specifically, i’m getting an idea of what i want to paint later on. this could be how a scene is set up or in this case, how a character is posed. here i’m not concerned about details or getting everything perfectly, i’m only planning how the thing will be composed. maybe a lot of canvas size changing, or adjusting what miku’s doing (note how busted miku’s right hand looks from all the transforming!) however, i still have to be concerned with how clear the sketch will be to future me, because the sketch won’t be any good if i can’t read what miku’s doing

after that, i lay down a flat gray under the sketch, mainly focusing on giving miku a clear silhouette. this is also a good time to make adjustments to the composition on the fly if i suddenly feel like something can be improved upon, like shortening miku’s left arm from the sketch!

after painting a flat silhouette, i start shading in grayscale, focusing only on lighting. i usually do it in two passes, one for the lightest and darkest tones i’ll use (not black and white) and then a second for midtones to blend them better with the base gray but i forgot to screenshot the result of the first pass 🗿 nevertheless, here is where i can start adding some amount of details. i’m not including any extra accessories yet, just focusing on the base design of the outfit and the character herself (for anyone wanting to draw characters from That Gacha Game, this is how i personally make the process more bearable for myself.) i still use the dark gray to separate where certain details (like the facial features and fingers) begin and end, mainly to make colouring more bearable later.

now here’s where i get the Good Colours. it’s a cheat lol. i put a gradient map layer over the grayscale painting so that there’s a little bit of color to start. some gradient maps can be applied as is, some need the layer settings adjusted to make it look good. this one, for example, is a (free) gradient map set from the csp assets store that needs you to set the layer opacity to 20% and to set the blending mode to color to achieve this result. in general, i tend to pick which gradient map i want to use based on vibes, or basically whether i want the work to be warmer or cooler, colour-wise. but this does do quite a bit of lifting for the colors in my stuff.

and then, finally, i add the colours. i add flat base colours in an overlay layer. at this stage, i’ve made the character silhouette clear enough that i don’t need to refer to the sketch anymore for what miku looks like. also, the gradient map layer does its magic by making the shading a bit more vibrant than it would’ve been without it. after that i paint over with a new layer to add details like the lace.

and then i put some extra shading on top. basically this is where the ‘better lighting’ happens. again, this isn’t a tutorial, so i’m not here to say what each part of the lighting is, but i’ve labeled which layers do which job. in other works where the lighting within a scene is more defined (from a window, from a small crack in the walls, etc) the glow dodge layer may be more opaque and sharper, but since this isn’t a work with that, the lighting was applied using an airbrush. the linear burn layer is also there to make the whole thing darker so the glow dodge doesn’t end up oversaturating miku. i also usually match the lights to the vibe i want, and use a complementary color for the shadows. so here you can see i have warm colors on the glow dodge layer, but light purple on both the linear burn and multiply layer.

and that’s it for the character—here’s a gif showing how each layer adds to miku! (sorry it’s so toasty)

as for the background, depending on the complexity, it may go through a similar process, or if i can settle with flat image backgrounds, i just go for that. it’s ok to use external image materials. i didn’t have a background in mind for this miku in specific, so i got some default csp materials and threw together something

and that’s about a rough overview of what my process for more finished works looks like! again, art is a fluid process so i never specifically stick to certain steps all the time, and you shouldn’t either. i can probably answer why i’d pick this colour over another in one particular work, but it’s something that kinda has to be learned on a grander scale. i think everyone can already feel what colors work with what atmosphere or what setting, even if they can’t immediately explain why. colors and composition do take some level of experimentation to find what works best!

TLDR, the smaller the canvas size, the bigger the pixels will seem. this also means there's less room for detail

this icon of Cinnamon is (SMALL) 48x48. this is a good size for portraits and objects or items

this strawberry and paw button icon is (SMALL) 32x32. this size is best for items, obejcts, and simplified portraits. i choose the specifics of the canvas size based on what i'm tasked with making. if you choose "small" and pick character art, i will make it on a 48x48 canvas by default and you dont need to choose that. it's just a guide to tell you how small/big the pixels will look in the end

this posed art of @subjectseventeen is (MEDIUM) 96x80. this size is better for character art and anything else you can think of. just like the small sized canvas, i choose the specific canvas size based on what i'm making

this gif of dolli dimples & sally sashay is 280x220. i dont offer this size right now but it's to give you a better idea of what differently sized pixel art means - as you can see, much more detail can be fit into larger canvases. the big canvas is best for all things, especially things that require a lot of detail.

i dont currently offer this size because my commissions are already on the expensive end and the amount of time/detail that goes into these big canvases is just... Too Much !

more about pixel art/artistic process below if anyone's curious

pixel art is basically so small because the devices and games which use it have very small memories. this is why i start with as small of a canvas as possible and keep the canvas small (17's canvas is horizontal.) it also saves space if the art is transferred onto anything, such as turned into a sticker or badge, there's basically no border so it wont need to be cropped. the canvas sizes used are all multiples of 16 because that's traditionally how pixel art has been made - makes moving sprites much easier for computers to understand for the game i work on. it's also a good size to make repeating patterns with for tiles in games - and it's the sizing reference my background canvas uses so it's sort of like a ruler for spacing certain things

each grey square is 16 pixels, meaning 4 squares is 32 pixels and so on

this isnt why pixel art is called "8bit/16bit/32bit" though, THOSE numbers refer to how many colours were used in the game's entire palette to, again, reduce the memory it takes up as much as possible. modern pixel artists generally dont use these words because we dont usually work in hyper-limited palettes. we do still use limited palettes (for me, usually 1 base 2 shade 1 highlight per colour) and again it's to reduce memory size of the file and it helps with keeping your art consistent :0)

it kinda sucks how much visual math goes into making pixel art because im actually so. SO. bad at math .

behold, all art of wit i have including one i havent posted here bc i never actually finished it and the wip of him being a silly giggly boy. pls know i came up with him like MAYBE a month ago. two, tops.

SO wit is actually a what-if au of another oc of mine, his name is doodle. doodle (seen below) is a very robin-hood-esque oc, honorable thief and kindhearted, swashbuckler rogue that dual wields rapiers bc hes insane. but hes insane in like a normal way. he was a horrible child but he did grow out of it and its rare to see him w his hair down so pardon me making him look absurdly pretty in that one.

as you can see there are some (but not MANY) differences between the two. kid wit does have the starry hands/peets im just forgetful dont @ me about it djdjdj

ANYWAYS so the what-if of the au that wit is, essentially, little singular things didn't happen to people in that au world. it goes like so;

wit: never met his childhood best friend when he was a freshly injured orphan. was alone from the (elf) ages of 0-16. ended up studying magic (illusion wizard) since he didn't have someone to lean on for that sort of thing.

laika (wit's mom): never truly broke out of an archfey's madness curse. stuck with a very twisted version of the spell Tasha's Hideous Laughter burned into her mind. everything is funny and if it's scary? even funnier. she died briefly. shes back now, but still madnessed.

perseverance (wit's dad): never saved his mother from a death blow in the be-all end-all fight to save his home. was held back by someone who he thought was a friend, killed that person and then ultimately spiralled so hard that he became a lich. may or may not have accidentally killed laika.

something something one decision can change your whole life, me and my friend loved playing with that concept.

okay now that you know a lil lore/history i can dive into what wit is like.

as a kid (drawn with the short megafloofy hair) he's very mischievous and bastardly, almost always smiling or grinning but it's more to lean into the uncanny valley effect his eyes cause than out of any actual joy or anything. he doesn't Blink and he knows it unnerves people because he also has a freakishly high insight (i think its like a +9 or smth??? at level 9??). he loves to come up with fucked up spells, like. for example i saw a silly post on here the other day that was very jokingly having a wizard cast a spell of "10000 bricks until you die" but then i was immediately aware wit would (1) come up with that spell, make it functional, and have it unfortunately obliterate everyone that gets hit with it, and (2) he would call it Wit's Bricks which i think is fuckin funny. he would also come up with spells of like. cause heatstroke. boil all fluid in your body. FREEZE all fluid in your body. he's a little freak with extremely low empathy for those he isn't connected to with blood ties. that said, he's kind to his family (albeit very blunt and will call them out if theyre being stupid) and inquisitive. he DID look his dad in the eye when he met him for the first time and went "are you dead?" which. again, hilarious, but BRUTALLY blunt. he then called his dad cool because yes his dad is now a lich and therefore undead. he's a little freak but he's still a kid and that is ultimately his saving grace, what small child isn't a little freak.

as an adult (long ponytail) i get a feel of him being aro and using romance as a way to manipulate people. he's definitely still not a good person and far more stoic than he was as a child. also he most definitely maintains a constant illusion to make it seem like his eyes are always closed, which lends an air of mystery to the strange elf that seems to always be standing right behind every throne in every kingdom of faerun. i say this because i like to think he would become what's called a King's Wit, which is like a combo of royal advisor, court mage, and "guy the regent has insult other nobility since insults are beneath the reigning royal". he uses all of that to his advantage, gaining the ear and trust of every single person of noble blood that is part of any royal or ruling court, and he will bend and twist their choices so subtly that they won't realise he led them to ruin until it's already too late. which is his ultimate plan. he's STILL somewhat a robin hood style of character, but he takes it a bit further and with far less kindness to the nobility. he guts their coffers completely and every hoarded coin down to the last copper inevitably will land its way conveniently into the lap of the common folk. he does take a healthy chunk for himself - did you know being a wizard was EXPENSIVE in dnd btw? i didnt until i made wit - but most of it is for the local citizens. he does this everywhere he goes if he sees that it needs to happen. fucker topples kingdoms For Fun, because he never gets caught or credited with the ruin he leaves behind himself. he's awful. he probably still comes up with fucked up spells and he manipulates his way into wherever he wants to be. i love him.

RUBY

behold! @polterpumpkin drew my (not very) little guy for me! this is part of a greater set but this is the fully coloured one and arguably my fave bc it captures the absolute batshit energy ruby brings to the table.

ruby is a tiefling that was born in a lab. voluntarily, his parents participated in a sort of study that wanted to eval why it is tieflings could be born to non-tiefling parents. (both his parents are half-orcs, interestingly!) he participated in it up to a certain point, before he got sick of being poked and prodded and Watched. that's when he demanded to be released and, when he wasn't, both his parents helped him escape, unfortunately leaving his other two tiefling-born siblings behind in the process. both parents Died helping him escape, and he was embittered as is by the whole study bs, and then to have his parents die Saving him? it left him with this sort of hole he didn't know how to feel.

so he fills that hole with every vice he finds agreeable. he drinks, he fights, and he drinks again. he's a drunken monk, and one full of unbridled rage and a death wish. he isn't my happiest oc but he isn't my worst off (that would be talisman bloodhunter). he's constantly seeking a grand and worthy cause to die for, literally. he's a wannabe martyr, because he doesn't think he has anything to live for. no lovers, no friends, no allies, MAYBE a coworker or two on the occasion he's needed (he is so not needed most of the time, because it isn't often any job needs an angry monk tief to glare around the place). he has just those two sides to himself - party animal and underground drunk brawler - because he doesn't want to think about the pain underneath them both. he's tragic in a very human way, hilariously enough, but he's not a bad person. even if he's being dragged by the tail to do a job, he's ultimately going to be helpful and he ALWAYS keeps his team alive. he'll grumble about it but he'll do it, and if you thank him he brushes it off, muttering something or other about how it's just his job, don't Thank him for that. i think having a friend would Fix him but fuck if i know what would get past his thick skin 😔

i dont get to play or write ruby really, not for any specific reason other than the dnd games im in have been going for So long, and that i havent really been super inspired to write him. but i love him! literally my car is named after him! i have so many feelings for him and i hope one day i get to play/write him so he can be more fleshed out.

I apologize for being a little late to write this but I've recently been dubbing Peppa Pig in Latin so I've been a little busy.

How engaging it is: 9/10

Personally, my attention span is like 0. I really struggle to finish shows or books, so it's honestly extremely impressive that I managed to finish this show. I did get kind of bored at the last episode, but it's a miracle I only got bored at the last episode.

Character's appearances: 7/10

I absolutely love Domina's choice of actors. Everyone looks exactly like they look in my head. Apart from one person. Augustus! He doesn't look that bad in the later episodes; the only major thing I don't like is hair color. But in the first two episodes, I could not get over his hair. what is that haircut im gonna cry

I'm sorry, that is not Octavian.

I just don't know what happened. Like, they could've gotten any random blond twink off the streets to be Octavian and I would be happy. But they really had to make Octavian look like that, huh.

But I do have two things I like about the young Octavian. Number one, his actor is actually the right age for once. The actor is in his twenties, so he's actually around Octavian's age at the time. Which is an actual miracle. Movies always use much older actors for people like Octavian and Britannicus. Number two, he's much smaller than Agrippa! Eeeeeee! I give that detail the 100% historically accurate stamp!

Which leads me to Agrippa. HJKFDKJHFSKS I love the actors they got for Agrippa. Both young Agrippa and old Agrippa, they look perfect! Words can not describe how much I love Agrippa's physical appearance in Domina.

Meanwhile, for older Augustus, I can look at him and go "Huh, I understand that this is Augustus" but I don't like his appearance.

I like how everyone else looks. Tiberius is a little too hot to be Tiberius, ngl.

Dialogue: 8/10

A lot of people complain that all the characters use the f word all the time which is anachronistic because the word "fuck" was invented after ancient Rome or some other dumb reason like that. But the fact they are speaking in English is anachronistic! I'm sure if the ancient romans had that word they would've used it all the time. Anyway, my only problem with the entire thing is that they literally don't use any other swear word. Come on, if the ancient Romans had English, I'm sure they would be more diverse in their choice of swears.

Overall, not counting their overuse of fucks, I quite like the dialogue. I'm still thinking of this part:

[Context: Augustus is really sick and was "speaking" with the dead]

Augustus: I just saw my mother.

Livia: Your mother? How is she?

Augustus: Oh, you know. Dead.

Augustus and Agrippa: 4/10

They hug a few times, I guess. And they're cute together sometimes. And occasionally they just have a moment that reminds me that they're besties. But it's not enough for me. I know I'm sounding picky or critical but you'd understand if you watch it. I'd actually like to show you some statistics.

(by the way, i was an ABOSLUTELY AWFUL data collector. there is no guarantee that this is going to be 100% correct, but it's close enough)

In the Domina fandom of AO3, there are around 3 fics where Agrippa is shipped with Octavian and around 8 fics where he is shipped with someone else.

Meanwhile, in every fic with Agrippa, excluding ones in the Domina fandom, there are around 22 fics where Agrippa is shipped with Octavian and around 5 where he is shipped with someone else.

Something is clearly wrong here.

(I'll probably make another post about these statistics and in that post I will count better so I'll know for sure what the numbers are. But for now, these are the numbers I counted but you shouldn't put too much faith in them)

Historical Accuracy: ???? I forgot but I think it wasn't bad.

Well, of course, Domina is very Livia-centric, so I shouldn't expect many good Augustus and Agrippa moments. But that's pretty much what I signed up for. I would like some more Augustus and Agrippa. I'm not even close to finishing Masters of Rome, but I quite like how they were written in it (apart from the MILLION times Colleen just had to remind the audience that augustus and agrippa were Totally Not Gay. listen, i heard you the first time) So maybe the writers of Domina should've taken inspiration from there.

But I'm not really mad though. This is just a little personal thing that I would've liked to see. But Domina can do whatever it likes. And there *are* cute Augustus and Agrippa scenes in Domina. Just not many. It's fine.

I didn't watch for the historical accuracy, so I honestly forgot if there were any big issues or not. But, it's a drama, not a documentary, so I'm a lot more lax. I'm totally fine with them adding new characters and changing up events as long as they don't make a historical mistake that makes me cry (if the characters of domina went to the colosseum, i would honestly cry) It's a drama. As long as it isn't pretending to be factual, I'm fine with them taking artistic license. But if you were watching for the SHEER accuracy of EVERY event, you might not like it.

Family friendliness: 2/10.

It's not a bad thing that it got such a low number, but I'm just saying that you shouldn't watch Domina with your mom or your kids or something. I'm pretty sure only actual porn has more sex than Domina does. If you watched HBO Rome, you'd understand. And like, there's no warning. One scene is totally normal and the next scene is gay sex.

I think I should do math about this. How many sex scenes are in each episode of Domina? (and hbo rome if i got the time) And what's the average amount of sex scenes per episode? I'm guessing 7. Reblog with which number you're guessing! (guys if you actually reblog with which number you're guessing I will actually be forced to calculate it so make sure you do)

General prettiness: 10/10

The entire show is so beautiful. I could take any screenshot and make it my phone background or something.

Overall: 8/10

I managed to finish it, and I quite enjoyed it. I love how Agrippa looks. I love how beautiful every scene looks. Storytelling-wise, I'd say it was good. My main problem is Octavian's appearance. But it isn't really a big groundbreaking problem (okay actually young octavian is an earthshattering sin. the ghost of julius caesar himself will haunt you forever if you can look at him and go "this is fine") And I'd also like more Augustus and Agrippa scenes. But overall, I'd recommend this show.

Im so fascinated with him as a character and how his brain works and ive been thinking (uh oh) that mentally peter is essentially still a child. Like theres 0 way he wasnt severly emotionally stunted as a kid and it shows (not an insult hes completely valid). But i mean he was a homless orphan in possibly the most terrifying place to be a homeless orphan ever and then all of a sudden this adult shows up and tells peter that he can teach him how to survive in that environment and obviously peter (who is literally like 10 at the time) trusts him. Now we can all agree that mags groomed peter right? And slip noticed that mags hanging around him was weird and called it out so its basically canon. But anyways peter listens to mags and trusts him and spends the next 7 years of his life training with him which, sure, it did help in some ways. Peter is an amazing theif and has learned how to put his skills to use because of mags BUT obviously he picked something up there cause people dont just usually mentally beat themselves up whenever they make a mistake. We dont know the details but id say its safe to say that there was probably some mental abuse that went on there to cause peter to be so hard on himself. And of vpurse mags lied to him about a huge part of his life and expected a child to do a world shattering mission basically on his own and it obviously didn't go well for either of them. And then there's slip. Sure we dont know most of the details yet, but we know that peters story abt him isnt a good one. Peter goes to him and its a similar cycle. Slip keeps him safe, loves him, makes him happy and then when the red flags start popping up peter looks away until he literally cant anymore. Theres literally a scene where slip comes home COVERED. IN. BLOOD. and exptected tried to hide it from peter. As far as my memory serves me, he didnt even give peter the whole story, just told him he "didn't kill anyone". I cant imagine how degrading it is to basically be looked in the eyes and be called stupid without literally being called stupid. Then, naturally, peter starts being less trusting until slip does something that resets the whole thing. He protects peters name. It was a pretty big act that could have put slips whole life in danger, and obviously when something like that happens you feel obligated to trust them. Why wouldnt peter question any negative thoughts he had abt slip? He risked his life for him. Then something else happens that we dont know about and it shatters peters trust entirly. He works completely alone for years and continues to use those abusive narratives that mags taught him. He uses a facade to look untouchable and dangerous but you can tell, even though he is very talented and smart, its a lie. And then theres him trusting Juno with his biggest secret only a day after knowing him. This has been a question that has rattled people for years. Why did he tell juno his name? And honestly i dont think its that complicated. I think peter literally just snapped. You can only hold up a perfect facade and keep all your thoughts and secrets inside for so long before you make a dumb decision and say something you didnt want to in the long run. There was probably a moment of regret we didnt get to see after he left and he just ended up being proved right by trusting juno. But i really just think he liked juno and saw him as a good trustworthy person and just acted. Anyways i think im done thanks

If someone were interested in wanting to get into the touhou series, what would you recommend they start with? :0

surprisingly this is a very difficult question to answer, since touhou is such an expansive franchise and a lot of people enjoy it for very different reasons. its also a series thats counterintuitive to follow if youre not there while each part of it is releasing, since theres a lot of plot overlap between the game series and the spinoffs on a chapter-by-chapter basis (though its not difficult to make sense of if you know that's the case in advance). there is really no easy way to get into touhou, but the flip side of this is that there isnt an incorrect way to get into it either! it just depends what you want out of it.

if youre looking to experience the story without too much hassle, start with the games in numerical order, then tackle the spinoff books and the concept records later if you feel like it. you can choose to start at the first game, or you can skip right to 6 since its the first windows title and the oldest game that's actively relevant to the plot overall (more detail on why thats the case here). dont forget to read omake.txt before beginning each game, since they contain the story prologues and character backstories that contextualize the plot before the games begin!

if youre looking for a polished gameplay experience and dont really care about following the story, then i would recommend 7, 8, or 10 as good standard shmup experiences; or 12.5, 12.8, or 18 if you want to see the franchise at its most esoteric in game design. if youre an experienced shmup player and want something that will kick your teeth in, 12, 14.3, or 15 will give you that.

if you dont care as much about the plot or the gameplay, but want to see the characters explored, the official manga are fine introductions. theyre not perfect, since they rely on you knowing the plot and cast of the games releasing concurrently with them somewhat, but you'll probably manage fine. out of these, the manga with the best balance of being self-contained while featuring a compelling plot would be touhou suzunaan ~ forbidden scrollery.

the concept albums are probably the most beginner-friendly example in this list, and theyre my favourite part of the franchise! since theyre just music cds without any skill at shmups required to get into them, plus they follow a self-contained plot from the rest of the series, you can get into them without any prior knowledge and get a complete experience!

lastly, a lot of people just start getting into touhou by browsing fanmade works, and thats valid too! some people often read a bunch of fan doujins or listen to arrange albums, notice a character in them, and go "she looks cool! which one is she from?" and branch into the official content from there. this is the option id recommend least out of these, because the tone and quality of fanworks can vary drastically and give you false impressions of the official content. however, its still perfectly okay to start this way, caveats aside!

what im trying to get at is that none of these are ideal solutions, but theyre all possible ways to start out. like i said, theres no easy way to get into touhou, but theres no wrong way either.

the only official content id advise against starting with would be any spinoff books other than the manga. despite most of these containing a lot of the best writing in the series, the more story-focused ones are often heavily tied to the plots of the games, so their highs hit highest if you have some level of experience with the series prior to reading them.

mole game 2

today is febrary fifth

rewriting this because the discard button really seemed intriguing to me like 10 minutes ago i dont know what came over me. I had gotten like so much more then i thought i would yesterday. you actually get super powers in learning when ur actively putting off a college paper.

I be recording bits and pieces of the process of putting it all together idk how much i want to describe in detail, it really takes alot of time to say it all.

I did finally open up that unity program and make a cube, hard part was makin it move

I decided i was gonna use the new unity input system module thing, idk shiny new thing obviously better, no way it isnt, then it like wouldnt be new and i wouldnt be using it.

funny thing is that i spent 30 minutes tryna optimize code and shit because i thought i messed up and was laggin my game, but the like context menu for the player input module just straight up lags the game look at this

i was usin the character controller module to setup the movement and i was tryna use the SimpleMove() function, which should've just taken raw inputs and added gravity, which should've been fine for my game since i don't need a jump and the character wouldn't need to be affected by physics. However it seems like that function is kinda awful, like it doesn't seem to work with Time.deltaTime or have a built in clock, so its all studdery and gets faster when at lower framerates, which i was able to test with my trusty player input context menu lol

yeah but then i just kinda rewrote it in the Move() function and manually just did the funny "+ Physics.gravity" and it just kinda works

so yeah this is all u need for a character controller folks i hope this helped and i hope someone bullies me for this at some point moveVector is a Vector3 and vectorBeforeTranslation is a Vector2 declared empty earlier in the class.

Now then was to make the character rotate, idk i kinda did it but not really but like hey look holy shit the cube is moving

i like couldnt figure out how make a transition so that the rotation looked clean so i kinda threw out that code

so i guess i just decided that i would work on making the character face my mouse, this was a travesty

a mixture of deciphering how to grab the mouse position from the input system garbage and deciphering how to convert it into real coordinates in the actual game

its like difficult finding any material for understanding quaternions on like a programming or unity level, like i dont actually need to know quaternions just show me where to plug the variables, it seems like the internet is deadset on giving me alternatives so that i never have to touch it so i ended up using the LookAt() function and inserted the mouse position which like semi worked

it made it look towards the ground which was goofy, but also i fixed this by just pretending like the y axis of the mouse position was the same as the character :^)

thats about all i achieved, i spent a long time tryna make a sort of transition for the rotation of the character for like some game feel or something, but idk i can do that later.

i think the next big thing is to work on terrain and how its gonna be destroyed, im lookin into like how to variably change like the vertices and stuff on a mesh, not looking to win any rewards, just dont wanna end up using blocks or somethin stupid for the rocks and shit.

I also gotta research alot into shaders for how i want the insides of the tunnels you would be creating would be.

seems like this would be the stage that would cause burnout since I'm not really sure where to go on from here but i guess ill just learn more about the engine and come back at another day.

one thing to note is that I tried to make my code like modular so i can use them again at a later date, thats probably a fairly good idea, always thought it was weird how much people online tell you to split up ur code and nonsense but dont tell you how they personally do it or like explain how ur supposed to come up with your own system on ur own projects.

hoping seeing so many nonsense libraries and doin so much damn math in my head doesn't rob me of my personality

The fact that all the fluffy scenes we saw in the beginning were of the future and not the past is still blowing my mind, that was so smart! like we thought we watching all the good times before it all came to a end when Jiwoo left but we were really seeing what they going to be when they finally got back together. Even know they’ve both had like the same amount of episodes or whatever, for some reason it just feels like We’ve gotten less of prapai and sky compared to payu and rain and it also feels more rushed, idk maybe I’m just being dumb and I’m the only one feeling like this plus I mean their not done yet but I just feel like when I was watching payu and rain at this point I feel like it felt better paced, I mean it could also be that their stories are both very very different even down to how it flows and develops which now that I’m writing this out this actually makes a lot of sense and I was being dumb cause sky and prapai are dealing with traumas and obstacles that payu and rain just didn’t have, ok so fuck everything I said before I had my revelation it doesn’t feel rushed and payu and rains was not “better paced” it’s just a completely different story and I shouldn’t even be comparing them

Also did anyone else get mad suspicious vibes from Teacher Sani, she was weird when she walking around the school and when she ran into Teacher Chadok but she was ESPECIALLY weird when she was talking to Wat asking him about Akk and the prefect group and like I feel like she is using the fact that nobody really takes interest in Wats passion of film cause shes the first person he has found that has taken a real interest and she using that to hide the fact that she's looking for some sort of information, I don't know if she suspicious because she working against or for the school but sus acting nonetheless this episode

One thing I would like to put out just because I thought it was curious detail was that Kim cleaned up before he left like Chay was kidnapped but he made sure the house was cleaned cause in the morning we see the couch bed pulled out blankets on it and stuff from them sleeping the coffee table moved if I'm not mistaken but then when Vegas and Porsche go to get Chay it's all nice and neat and I just found that interesting just imagining Kim being all scared for Chay not knowing exactly what's all happening making the call to Kinn and just going back into the house to tidy up before he goes to kill some bitches

Ok so I decided to do a favorite bl dramas of 2021 even though no ones asked lol, although looking back at everything I watched this year I really didn’t watch that many at least compared to 2020, like I really slacked on my bl watching this year like at one point I was watching 12 or 14 at one time (this included like older completed ones too as well as airing shows) now if I’m watching 5 or 6 I feel overwhelmed which is so frustrating so if I was setting a bl related resolution it would be to get back to that 12-14 territory, anyways I've watched around 20 something dramas give or take some short films and movies but just to focus on the dramas of it all for this list, although I didn’t watch that many this year I still feel like I watched some very good ones and I very very happy with every single show on this list that being said let’s get into it.

**DISCLAIMER** these are not in any specific order like best to least or anything like that cause it would absolutely break my brain and my heart to rank them

✦ oh hi Comet! it's lovely to hear from you, i honestly haven't been doing super well lately but yknow. anyway, I've been very slowly watching a playthrough of all the yakuza/like a dragon games! I've only finished 0 so far but it was such a good time!! made me wish i could actually play it for myself. yakuza 0 is a prequel game, that focused on the main character of the series (Kiryu) and the fan favourite/important secondary character (Majima), it details how they came to be who they are in the main series and a bunch of backstory for other significant characters. the main plot is pretty serious and SO emotional. oh my god the Majima storyline had me sobbing!!! and the game is full to the brim with silly and ridiculous side content and super fun minigames too!!

i have also finally played Ghost Trick! I've been meaning to for literal years, ever since i got into ace attorney basically and i got the switch port and played through the whole game in like 3 days and like. i get it now. it rly is that good. ghost trick is a puzzle game where you play as ghost trying to solve your own murder! the puzzles basically work like rube goldberg machines. it's genuinely so fun and has an absolutely amazing story and fantastic cast of characters i couldn't recommend it enough!!

other than that I've also been replaying 999! I've got the axe and sub ending so far and I'm working on knife rn. 999 is my favourite game of all time so im having a great time with that haha.

I don't think there's anything im super looking to get into rn, i wanna dive into revstar at some point bc some good friends are super into and it seems rly good and definitely like something i would enjoy! and im always open to media recs if anyone has them, it might take me a while but i do enjoy getting into new stuff!

summary-genre, style, impressions

mating is a 1992 longish romance novel. i saw it mentioned online a few times and then nyt plugged it as a trending work w younger ppl looking for a more encouraging take on love. so far its been more about a relationship than outspoken/internal love. more gestures and recollected conversations than like unspeakable feelings.

the main characterrs are white expats in botswana, presumably in the 90s. botswana is apparently entirely an alpine desert. water politics obviously play a big part in everyday life. the female narrator--unnamed im pretty sure eek--is recounting her life in africa leading up to her relationship with nelson denoon, who lives on a v isolated desert commune. snippets of conversation (childhood stories, agreements and disagreements, big theories) from their time together breaks up the linear narrative (abandoned phd>a few lovers>meeting denoon>pursuing>winning his company (its rly like that)). the book seems to be a retrosprctibe on the relationship so it seems likely that it does end.

both characters are rly smart and critical. narrator is a doctoral student, denoon was an esteemed prof at her uni at some point long ago. they are described by their opinions both of which are v thorough and educational to read. if i were to note everything i want to rmr it would be p stifling. similarly the vocabulary is more varied than most books ive read. new words almost every page.

summary-plot

narrator starts by dropping out of her thesis. her research was misguided bc of language or microcultures or something. also there are so many phd theses by white grad students that it kinda feels irrelevant. she decides to take her time returning to usa, embarks on her first aimless time of life. the expat scene caters to that. white ppl living in luxury abound in the city. her position as white attractive native language speaking persona gets her into a lot of good parties and leads to several overpaid jobs.

she has a few flings. her first is explicitly to get to victoria falls it seems? or ends up being that way. a photographer, kinda petty, reduces scenes to their photographic potential. narrator knows too much ab the culture to rly take him seriously.

second male relationship is with a spy. she massages his back a lot. he tries to give her nice stuff but shes less about that. she does try to get info from him which creates difficulties for awhile but eventually he does give out things (of various novelty), eventually leading to him describing denoon. narrator wants to meet him so they go to a party where hes slated to attend. she meets his wife first who is drunk n distraught but also drags narrator to meet her husband. their marriage has run its course. narrator is impressed w him and also makes effort to impress him. she finds out where hess staying and visits some time later w intent to learn ab his project. by this time shes also rly interested in him. his politics are correct aka he is vested in improving the community and tries not to position himsself as an outsider. he thinks outside influence often leads to ressentiment in the community. kinda forget the details on that. as well as most of the other social theory expounded bt them. they are experts. nonetheless he says no we dont accept anyone else on the commune and she leaves his home and he leaves for back to the commune.

narrator runs into ex wife in town. she runs to greet narrator and walks her along to get more drink (already v drunk) and they talk. ex wife eventually reveals location of commune. when they depart she goes back to her current partner, shady white african (boer?) businessman, w intention of leaving africa soon.

nar preps to crash the commune. sells her stuff, reduced down to a couple big bags. the trip through the desert is hard and ends w 4-5 days of walking w 2 donkeys (1 runss off w her water and supplies; its hard n she arrives in v low health). she is nursed back to health by several women. the compound has a lot of permacultural features. she hasnt met denoon yet. ofc we know him relatively well already bc of the broken narrative structure.

is this a relatable story

well i guess im an 'early' 30s lost for purpose culturally sensitive individual. but narrator does not think like me; more purposeful and analytic. denoon also doesnt really have much of me in him. i like agreeing with them and following their exchanges.

what are you retaining

idk much at all ab africa so theres a lot of context to gather.

is it that radical

the cultural analysis addresses problems of whites abroad well. the relationship is portrayed through their stories so far. she has fun with him and he values play. at the same time theyre both smart enough to rly play deeply. then again its a novel ab two characters, how could they not be interesting and well fleshed out after 150p. if its actually a romance novel then ive read a lot of those bc it feels p familiar.

what ab their relationship is special besides their dynamic convos lol

if it is indeed a retrospective then the relationship ends somewhat smoothly. mb she just decides to go home. its called mating and shes already described her real romantic impulses as somewhat based on procreation. tbf she also questions this bc who rly knows. if they do conceive then that would prrobably be the thing that pushes her back to usa.

Hey the songs I mentioned to you earlier are both by Lilli Furfaro, they're called Checks and Balances and Pain and Pleasure (bolded each one because there's lots of "and"s in there), and as it turns out they are apparently about characters from hit D&D podcast Critical Role which I found out as I was looking them up to make sure they were on YouTube while writing this ask. They slap though

Checks and Balances: Folksy! This vibes heavily. I don't give a fuck that it's a D&D character song, fuck'em. It sounds artsy enough to have a uniquely high level of deniability. Like, I guess I wouldn't know, but this feels like it has a very low number of diegetic lyrics, and I sort of wish that typical showtune and "fandom-folk" (as im going to call it) would do that more often. It always feels like they want to tell the story in solid, surface-level ideas and not gripping-but-vague, symbolically-significant details. This song does a pretty good job, though. Nothing strikes me as being cringe or on-the-nose. It's good. Well written.

Remember this thing I found a while ago? I hope you didn't listen to it when I did. You should listen to it now, because it's sort of the same vibe as this.

Pain and Pleasure: Also folksy! I think this one is a bit more on-the-nose than the other, which is still a hunch, of course, but IDK, I'm pretty confident. The ending being so abrupt is interesting to me, because it makes this track loopable. The final line being "With eyes that never close" ties really well with that design choice. The beginning doesn't really work with it though, which might imply something else, but still, edit in the first "He eats life!" chorus and the instrumental bridge, then start it back up from the first verse and you got yourself an unending song. Hell, don't even edit in the chorus, just edit in the start of the song at about 0:03 (more like 0:02.9) and that would be enough.

This would be easier to analyze if I knew literally anything about Critical Role beyond the fact that God-VA, PCMaleNorn, Matthew Mercer is the DM.

recommendation...uhhhhhh...idunno fuggin...take this i guess??

around chapter 50 im like, where has the story gone? why has every character turned into a caricature of themselves? nothing is happening at this point except drawn out, cartoonish behaviour and pure nonsensical drama. ok cool neville is here but forcing him to talk about his sex life when he's obviously uncomfortable seems extreme and wrong. is this supposed to be a display of friendship? am i the only one who thinks it's not cool.

also what started off as ok cool hermione establishing her independence and individuality, has sourly turned into hermione acting like a rabid chihuahua without a shred of self awareness. and not in a cute way. by giving the story a focal point of "situations where men displayed an undercurrent of controlling, patronising, manipulative behaviour get taught a lesson by the narrative" to "the only thing holding the narrative and it's characters together are displays of controlling, patronising, manipulative behaviour." oh btw let me just toss in an attempted sa and then never mention it again because my sidekicks have taken up an uncomfortably large portion of the story. also these cheap gimmicks will not provide anything to the story, the story doesn't exist anymore because all you're reading is what should be ooc crack one-shots that have deviated so far from the original premise, you don't even know what you're reading anymore.

but sure, fuck it let's just destroy all these characters we spent 50 chapters creating. fuck why not turn ron into a horrid, possessive, stupid, spitting and drooling caricature of a dog on a leash as a friend? i feel like on one hand ok cool you've accomplished a lot in terms of character progression... but know when to stop. i miss hermione and her loop. i miss malfoy having depth. you're really going to mention draco's love is an obsession and then show me exactly how it is and then want me to accept it as the new driving power in the narrative? like. HER LOOP ISN'T EVEN MENTIONED ANYMORE!!! you had so many opportunities.... where are they gone? theo's character is probably the only part of this im still invested in. ginny has 0 personality, blaise is taking up way too much space, the flashback was terribly written, and the prank on astoria is like 10 chapters late of me even caring about it.

to take all this extra shit out, bringing it back to basics of shit: there's a curse on hogwarts (wow malfoy blood...), astoria (get punkd sucka), hermione's plan for after hogwarts (just like hermione's pov, im just trying to get through this story one day at a time), hermione and ginny's friendship taking a back seat to their boytroubles, the aspect of boytroubles at all honestly..., hermione and draco get together and don't immediately solve all the sexual tension they both have with each other AND theo (let's be honest). this is debt of time level painstakingly boring middle material. just waiting tens of thousands of words to get to a story that could've been told better and more succintly if the author had any sense of tension, payoff, build-up, and character loyalty and didn't just fuck around in the mud.

why is everyday like bam wake up bam something happens bam something happens bam she sleeps 7 hours, girl im exhausted even reading about your day let alone wanting to imagine it in even more detail.

im going to hold out hope that maybe it turns around.... but honestly im so sick of these assholes.

at least i always have the first 25 chapters to reread that i can still enjoy. if anyone can tell me otherwise to any of the above i welcome it. i desperately wish i was wrong.

not a bad start here overall! this is recognisably intended as a brachiosaurid, and the skull shape and overall profile are pretty good (though they look a bit juvenile-ish). points off, though, for the inaccurate hands - rather than elephantine columns, they were more shaped like lima beans in cross-section. yes, really. they also only had one claw per hand (it was on the thumb). also points off for having the external fleshy nostril located on the dome of the skull; while this is the position of the bony external nostril, there is evidence that the fleshy nostril was probably located at the tip of the snout. its dead eye haunts me

score: 7/10 solid attempt

google clearly went for a cartoonier approach, and to my view it served them well. still recognisably a brachiosaur - the shape of the skull and overall proportions make it resemble Europasaurus, a type of dwarf sauropod that lived on an island in what is now eastern europe. which immediately ups its score in my book. however, it falls victim to the same issues with elephantine hands as did the apple one, and as such i can’t give it a perfect score.

score: 9/10 friendly!

this emoji cleverly avoids any scientific inaccuracies by being extremely cartoony. i like the use of single colours rather than gradients. a little too simple for my tastes though. i can’t tell what find of sauropod, if any, it was intended to be - a brachiosaur, because of the upright neck? a mamenchisaur, maybe? i have little to work with.

score: 6/10 just too vague

i don’t like her at all. clearly a brachiosaur - sensing a common theme - but something about it is just unpleasant to me. the body seems too fat, the limbs too short, the tail too noodly, the head too pointy. also messes up the hands again.

at last, an emoji that bucks the brachiosaur trend!! this is clearly not a brachiosaur. in fact, it looks like a possible Cetiosaurus-type deal. whatever it is, it’s charming. the nostrils are at the end of the snout as they should be and - is it? - can it be? - it is! the hands are anatomically correct! each clearly has one claw, located on the thumb, and though we can’t see well, they don’t appear to be elephantine. i love them a lot.

a classic. what it lacks in detail it makes up in simplicity. it has pleasant lines and an appealing silhouette. it’s extremely vague and not based off of any real genus, and the tail is far too short, but for some reason this doesn’t bother me too much.

hm. hmm. a lot of anatomical though was clearly put into this; overall the body form looks like a plausible sauropod. the proportions look a little weird, sure, but that seems to be perspective - after all, most sauropods were gigantic beings. beefy boys, if you will. its nostrils, upon close inspection, are correctly placed; however, its hands and feet are all messed up. i guess the real conundrum for me is that it seems to be a mish-mash of sauropods - remove the braciosaur-like domed skull, and it would be a great fit for an Apatosaurus.

what in the hell is joypixels? and what in the hell is this? i just...the hands and feet are plantigrade, meaning that the ankles touch the ground, when actual sauropods were digitigrade - walking on their toes. the shoulder and hip muscles aren’t there, and instead the limbs are just awkwardly connected to the body. it reminds me of a turtle, and not in a good way.

every emojidex emoji i have ever seen has just been awful. this is no different. this looks like a stereotypical loser from a meme, but as a dinosaur. the contrast between the decently moderate level of artistic detail put in and the blatant disinterest towards making it look like an animal is staggering. just awful.

excuse me? what the fuck? what the fuck is this? this is the main character from the low-budget ripoff of the good dinosaur. the head looks like a Corythosaurus  and the body looks like barney in leapfrog stance. the gradients just make me feel a little sick. it’s awful. look at the hindlimbs and tell me that any love was put into drawing this. it’s like how a dinosaur would be drawn on tom and jerry but like, the bad charmless ones made in the 90s that were trying hard to emulate the originals. the hands look like green snowboots.
