The Decline Of Western Civilisation

The classic LA punk doc

I feel it’s rare to have a (theatrically released) documentary that is much less well-known than its sequel. But The Decline Of Western Civilisation II: The Metal Years had famous people in it, some much-quoted funny moments and set up director Penelope Spheeris up to make the massive hit comedy Wayne’s World. The first Decline, on the other hand, is bleaker, occasionally funny in a very dark way and put Spheeris on the way to directing the grim (and fairly obscure) squatland drama Suburbia. And at the time none of these people were celebrities and even subsequently, the only person here who has nudged fame is Pat Smear, the guitar player from Germs, who was a touring member of Nirvana in their last days and is currently a Foo Fighter. 

But make no mistake, The Decline Of Western Civilisation is an extraordinary music documentary. Filmed in late 1979 and early 1980, it drops us right into the middle of punk in Los Angeles. There’s no voiceover – although we do occasionally hear Spheeris asking questions – so the description and analysis comes from bands, fans, managers, club owners, bouncers and the staff of Slash magazine.*  

In what I think was an accident of timing, Spheeris caught a pivotal moment. The early punk scene in Los Angeles had been open-minded and stylistically diverse. Here we see the codifying of hardcore punk and the amped-up aggression of bands like Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Fear and their audiences. Fear, in particular, incite their gobbing crowd with a steady stream of homophobic derision.

The contrast is with Catholic Discipline, led by Slash editor Claude Bessy (aka Kickboy Face), whose guitar player Phranc was a trilby-sporting lesbian. (And Catholic Discipline are shown playing at venue we learn had banned the hardcore bands by this point.) Their crowd looks like a relatively sophisticated bunch who have put a lot of time into their outfits. But they also, it should be said, seem a lot less into the occasion than the kids at the Circle Jerks show. 

There wasn’t (it seems) even the language to describe what was going on those crowds. Everyone refers to pogoing, but these kids aren’t jumping up and down on the spot, they are smashing into each other and creating a vortex of bodies, and clambering up onto stage and getting shoved off. It seems the terms slam dancing (moshing was an even later coinage as I remember it) and stage diving were not yet in common use. 

So how does Spheeris put us in this world? We get a lot of footage of the bands on stage, which might be hard work for some viewers. But because Spheeris and her camera crew are interested in the scene as a whole, there’s always something anthropologically interesting to note**, even if you can’t tell where one Fear song begins and the next one ends. 

And then there are the interviews. This the opposite of the uniform talking-head approach, although the great access Spheeris had helps. Interviews with kids from the scene are face-on in a stark room with a bare light bulb hanging down, shot in black & white and tinted blue. Venue owner Brendan Mullen is filmed on a cliff high above Los Angeles. Nicole, the long-suffering manager of Germs, talks in close-up with her clothes merging into the black background. 

Germs lead singer Darby Crash, by contrast, is filmed cooking eggs and bacon in a grubby kitchen – this is probably the film’s most notorious segment, as his mate blithely recounts stumbling across the body of a workman at her parents’ house. Spheeris [unseen]: “Didn’t you feel bad that the guy was dead?” Michelle: “No, not at all. Because I hate painters." During the X interview, singer John Doe is tattooing LA music scene character Top Jimmy's arm while the band’s other singer, Exene, talks through her collection of fundamentalist Christian pamphlets that she’s collected on the streets of LA.

All of which is to say that faced with my key question about movie docs – is this actually a movie? (rather than TV or – these days – YouTube content) – the answer is about as emphatic a ‘yes’ as is possible. This is a visually fascinating bit of film-making, regardless of what’s being said. But the what’s being said is interesting, too. Both the letters from readers to Slash magazine and some of the things the kids filmed under the light bulb say are (to a 2023 viewer) evidence that it wasn’t the internet that created all manner of unpleasantness – it was always there, and (in the case of the readers’ letters), people used to bother to actually write and post trolling nonsense (I was going to say and pay for postage, but I’m guessing a lot of these were kids using stamps from their mom’s desk.)

This is one of those movies I’ve known about for decades, but only finally now got a chance to see. And yet somehow it went way past my expectations – this is one of the great rock documentaries.

*OK, so maybe worth saying I know a certain amount about this stuff – for instance, I’ve read We’ve Got The Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story Of LA Punk so I had a lot of context that the more casual viewer wouldn’t. But I still think it would be an absorbing watch if you don’t know anything (you don’t have to have read a book to realise that Darby Crash was very bad news).

**For instance, at this point at least, both in terms of the bands and their audience, this was less all-white than you might imagine/despite the bile spewed by a couple of the interviewees. (Not as far as I know shown in this film, but definitely already a key figure was Spot, RIP.) THE WOMAN. SHE'S GONNA BE 31, MMK. SHE WAITED UNTIL THE FIRST NIGHT OF CONCERTS TO TRY ON HER DRESSES FROM LAST YEAR. Which over the year she's been sourly commenting on herself gaining weight. ONE WOULD THINK. WITH ONLY 40MIN TO GET READY AND BE AT THE HALL, ONE WOULD HAVE CHECKED WEEKS OR MONTHS AGO THAT HER OUTFITS STILL FIT?? Nope. gotta wait until the night of. She has amazing fashion sense too. (sarcasm) So she left with 12min left, to go to one of our local box-stores to find something to wear. I really hope she finds something. She left without her hair done, no make-up, we ordered pizza yesterday to be ready for today so she took pizza in a ziplock baggie. and running out the door with her insulin stuff because she needs to do that too. Like... this was not planned AT ALL. She was in a verbal fight with my mom over the phone. I could hear them both clear as day from my room. And I was just messaging my dad on the side like "So how was your day???" xD We have no idea what she's wearing. I really hope that someone brought extra make-up and a brush for her hair. I have a hair tie if need be. I should bring some other stuff too... Good lord.

I used to watch Jimmy so much and like mr beast gaming and Karl is how I found the DSMP and then people started crapping on him so I followed the crowd and stopped watching but was legit just thinking of getting back into his stuff for Karl,Nolan and Chris but now I find all this out… such a piece of crap

I didn’t watch it directly someone who was streaming watched it and I watched it with them but I can’t remember who it was

it's just. soulless. that's the only way i can think to describe it. like, if you wanna watch kinda surface level viral video fodder with sensationalist branding, then like ... go for it. but we're an audience that was largely curated through longer form content (using the manhunts as an example, since they tend to be around 40mins or more), so clearly many of us aren't gonna jive with the Hyper Edited Quick Cut style of content, yknow? the antarctica video might not have been so unappealing if it had been longer than TWELVE MINUTES ....... like surely there was more that could've been included, right? some HUMANITY maybe????

March 15/16thth: Mui Ne

Ok whoever travels to Vietnam, do not plan on going to Mui Ne if you dont want to have a hustle to get to the next spot. We did some research about visiting the sand dunes there and a cute fishing village. This is what happened instead:

1: troubles finding a good bus connection to Mui Ne from HCMC. Tripadvisor has 1 stars for many of the buses. We chose Futa Bus (quite comfy)

2: no local bus schedule. The dunes are like 25km away and taling a scooter was not an option for us. Local buses do exist, but people told us that the first one starts at 5am and then needs 40min to our spot and we just have to add up the time until we wanted ro get there. But as it is an estimate, there is no guarantee that the bus shows up around that time.

3: most importantly: no good connections to Hoi An. There is a train station that you can reach by local bus and then take a Grab (=Uber). That was what we did. For some reason the bus driver just fropped us off in the middle of nowhere instead of the local train station. We were the last people on the bus and usually nobody takes it further out of the city. Our alternative was taling a sleeper bus. For some reason barely any bus goes via Mui Ne. Only really shirty ones. Meaning that everybody said that tjis is not a safe option and super unvomfy. We are talking about a 19h bumpy busride.. so we decided to take the train instead. (More about the trainride in the next post) As our sleepertrain left at 2:49pm we had to get there super early and couldnt see the sand dunes. Only the fishing village.

4: it is very touristic. Basically Mui Ne consists of a very long street and beach with plenty of restaurants, resorts and beach bars. They really rely on tourism and in the areas where there are no tourists, there is so mixh plastic garbage and really bad looking houses. An intense contrast. So there was no way to get familiar with some local traditions or lifestyle.

But now the nice parts about Mui Ne:

1: Visit the fairy stream. This was right next to our hotel. You take off your shoes and walk through a "red river". The stream goes along a beautiful res canyon and has olenty of trees giving some nice protection against the sun. The first part is still full of tourists but the longer you walk through the water, the better it gets. This was a really nice contrast to the big city life in HCMC.

2: The fishing village. Only 5min away by local bus, there is a really cute spot with lots of fishing boats and some fishing "bowls"(?). These are just round little boats with one wooden steeringwheel for the fishermen. Its fascinating how fast they can steer with that. You can walk along the beach and buy some fish from the locals there. They put the fish in different bowls of water and wait for the locals and probably the restaurants to buy their products.

3: the beach.

Some parts of the beach are extremely nice to walk along and watch the sunset. We decided to go to a baf, get a pineapple juice and just sit back and relax. The water is warm enough to swim in but sadly we didnt bring our swimsuits. But it was still a beatiful sunset and to hear the waves of the sea making us think: WE CAN NOT SEND THIS TO ANYONE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE SO JEALOUS. Here it is anyway. We are not there anymore so its ok to post it.

Just one less

Friday 5th May

We just needed it to be one less mile and then we would have got to the hotel before it rained again. We just needed to eat one less meal ( see pics of lunch) and I wouldn’t have felt like a beached whale struggling to drag the excess weight up the hills and we just needed to have one less drink and I wouldn’t have felt the room spinning as I fell into bed. This last mistake was all down to Shep who insisted a trip to the Golden Lion to try their Irish Whiskey was essential.

We were down for breakfast at The Forresters before eight with Mark having la di da smoked salmon. He was booted and packed ready for the off but I still had to get my boots and wet gear on.

It was raining but lightly and we had the substantial climb up Sutton Bank in front of us. You couldn’t see the white horse because of low cloud and mist. It took us over an hour of sweaty climbing to get to the top and walk along the ridge to the cafe at the visitor centre.

We had coffee and dawdled a while to dry our kit a bit. The rain had increased so I got my over trousers on and we set off back into the heavy rain. After a few miles we met a couple who were ambling along. She was using Google maps to navigate. I asked where they were heading and the guy said I thought we might go up Roseberry Topping (known as the Yorkshire Matterhorn because of its similar looks though there is a significant height difference). I explained to him it was about 30 miles away as I was planning to go up it on Monday. I mentioned there was a cafe a couple of miles from our current location and they decided to go there instead.

In fact the cafe proved to be about 4 miles along the track and we never saw the couple again. The Paradise Farm cafe is a little bit of paradise especially when it’s chucking it down. We sat around a hot stove drying our gear out and eating huge amounts of food.

After 40mins of R&R we put the damp waterproofs on and stepped back out into the rain. We had been the only people in the cafe but as we left a large walking group arrived presumably jockeying for position around the stove.

It was easy walking but we had a big distance to cover and we were both over full of food. Thankfully there were no huge climbs to negotiate and the weather steadily improved. We had several stops to shed clothing and take a couple of pictures as the rain cleared and the fabulous view slowly unfolded. Shep changed into his high vis jacket so we now looked like a team of workmen up to do emergency repairs on the moors.

It’s a lovely walk into Osmotherly down into a valley with a lovely stream but it was a bit spoiled by the rain restarting. We couldn’t be bothered to put more gear back on so just got wet.

We arrived at the Queen Catherine Hotel only to be redirected to The Three Tuns it’s sister hotel as apparently the QC only opens when there is sufficient demand. The Tunns is ok and the food very good. Shep was raving about his pie and I’ve had a very nice burger. We’ve made a couple of forays over to the Golden Lion for beer and Whiskey and Shep insisted we had a bottle of wine with our meal. I might be nursing a headache on the trail tomorrow.

It’s been a long day with 15.8 miles covered and most of the day was wet but it’s been lots of fun. Shep is always cheerful (except maybe when he was forking out £60 for the taxi to go fetch his car) and we’ve had a brilliant day. He’s driven over 4 hours to come for the walk and has that drive back in the morning. I really appreciate it though that extra double whiskey was a bad idea.

But due to some unfixed damage to the castle, all students staying for the holidays get moved to a nearby scottish town for the winter. As the move had to happen rather quickly, some planning mistakes happened and Draco and Harry end up rooming together. In itself bad enough but when the room only has one bed it gets worse. A story with some baking, Draco and Harry avoiding their feelings, and a christmas market.

But the war had left him broken. During his last year at school Draco has to face bitterness, hate and resentment. But life may also have healing, growth and some unexpected allies and friends in store for him.

Now Harry's time is running out and he doesn't know how long he has before Draco dies as well

That's a second date question (M, 11k) (Part of HD Owlpost 2021) Somehow Harry and Draco keep ending up on dates with each other - without really planning to. At some point it has to stop being a coincidence, right? (A classic 5+1, with some confusion, hurt and still fluff)

Fucking bite me (E, 2k) For their upcoming anniversary, Draco want's nothing more than to feel Harry sink his cock/teeth (both) into him; so he gets creative.

Wolfstar:

Golden (G, 1.5k) When one touches their soulmate, the soulmate will begin to glow golden somewhere on their body. The place changes according to what one likes most about them at that moment. Or: the one where Sirius and Remus are made for each other but Sirius nearly fucks it up.

The Jumper (T, 3.7k) Remus catches Sirius wearing his jumper. Sirius never planned for Remus to know. Luckily, they still find their way to each other.

Raising Prongslet (G, 2.6k) Werewolf's, fights, chocolate, oh my! ?A slice of life fluff fic where Remus and Sirius raise Harry, instead of the Dursleys. Following the little family through the adventures of parenting, a full moon and an absolutely adorable kid.

Who better to model for her than her girlfriend Ginny Weasley and the art's department resident model Blaise Zabini. But the painting soon isn't the only reason the three of them meet up and Luna isn't mad about it in the slightest.

The shipping culture in BTS fandom (I will say only about bts cuz i dont know about other group) is seriously taking or should I say has already taken the worst shape. Day by day it is becoming problematic and toxic and also ADDICTIVE.

When I decided to get into this BTS thing , it was only my first day getting to know Bts listening their song trying to recognise each members , then on this first day itself I got recommended a jikook video by you tube. And being ignorant of the shipping thing I watched that video and two three others back to back.

Now even before I could distinct between Jungkook , taehyung and suga , I was convinced that two members named Jimin and Jungkook are in a relationship. I hadn't even listened to all of their songs but at this point I was getting more excited from their relationship thing until i found out about whole shipping culture shipping war blah blah.

Many new armies like me are getting into this shipping thing even before correctly knowing each of the members. Coz you tube immediately recommends these shipping videos. This only shows that most of the armies only watch shipping content in you tube and these shipping videos r present in too much quantity.

People r becoming shipper first then an army these days. And the amount of new army joining this Fandom is at its peak rate. And yes shipping is VERYYYY ADDICTIVE. Its very sad because we know that this shipping culture will never end , it will only grow.

The amount of time armies have spent watching those 30-40min analysis videos or romantic compilation videos if they would have spent this much time streaming BTS's song then black swan or On or other under appreciated songs wouldn't have less than 400M views.

I am very thankful that Jimin and Jungkook actually are involved with each other and jikook video got suggested to me before any other. But still in my early days as army I had spend my whole day watching only jikook content which I regret coz BTS is 7 not 2. Now I watch only ot7 content and I am not addicted to any couple. But not all armies have still came to their senses and it makes me sad.

I got too emotional I should stop writing now 😂

Genuinely thought I was going to have a good day today... It's 10am and that's already been proven false.

Due to my aunt being incapable of caring for her own daughter or providing her with a babysitter even though she makes 5x what my mother makes, baby stays with us (without my consent) for 10hrs Monday through Friday.

I'm neurodivergent AND unemployed, so due to not having a stream of income I can't move out. My mother also got a dog a year ago without even asking me about it, and my sensory issues combined with the stressed out dog pretty much send me into panic attacks and meltdowns weekly. To get around the screaming baby and insane dog + my mother's daily yelling about how useless I am, I tend to sleep all day and use headphones blasting with music to draw out the noise.

Today is Saturday though, no baby, my mother usually sleeps all morning and the dog stays with her. So I woke up early, took a nice shower, ate breakfast for the first time in weeks and... she woke up.

Baby is also coming today, she's staying from 10am to 5pm. Mother woke up screaming and was very angry at my choice of breakfast. She bursted into my room (without knocking, of course) to let me know. The last 30-40mins have been spent with her yelling at the dog to shut up and unfortunately for me I don't own noise cancelling headphones nor can I lock my door (and no amount of asking will make her respect my "privacy", as if i ever had any), so the only safe place I could have doesn't exist.

Baby is also coming tomorrow, and I can only imagine how angry she's going to be. And because I'm not allowed to leave my room when baby is here, because I need to stay with the constantly barking dog, seems like I won't be eating this weekend either.

Yeah! It would’ve been better if they said that they were her only full headlining concerts; as in a 2 hour show. But again, it’s just wording and it’s fine, a lot of people will be able to travel to see her because there won’t be ticket prices involved since the show is completely free, so it’s an amazing opportunity for fans in that area of the country. Lesson Learned

In the Key Activities segment, we learned that knowing the key resources alone is not satisfactory. We also need to acknowledge the key activities that need to be in the business for it to run smoothly and for it to be successful.

Knowing the key activities allow us to be focused on business value so that we can run the business smoothly and organized.

Also just like in other segments, the Key Activities segment must be integrated into the other segment for it to be successful and working.

That leaves us focusing on one customer segment which is “Reviewees”.

First is review facilities. It is needed to make a motivating environment for customers and a review-friendly place to study. Second is board exam topnotchers; they are the ones who will teach and motivate the customers. Lastly, the publishing house creates and disseminates the printed modules and book reviewers for the customers.

Our Distribution Channels?

Having a review facility will boost the on-site promotion because it provides a location for the customers if it is applicable to their liking. Social media and Online Chat are also needed for the tutors to be connected to their customers if they need support.

Travel Tips for Iceland

Food

Iceland has kind of a bad rep on food being expensive and not good.  Actually only the first part is true and you can work around it.  

Yes, there're $50 plate of lamb and $25 burgers, but also relatively affordable options like unlimited soup & bread for $20 or hotdogs for $5 or amazing pastries for about $5.  The food trucks are also good options, with $20 langostine rolls or fish and chips at e.g. the Jokulsarlon Lagoon.  We saw trucks at other tourist spots as well.

Top choices for eating out?  Icelandic lamb and local arctic char.  They are both tender and tasty. We had them at Restaurant Sudur Vik in Vik, and went back 2x more.  My kids are still talking about that meal. ;-)

The trick is getting an AirBnB and buy/make some food.  We ate out for lunch only, and that comes out to on average $200-250 for 10 people including 4 kids. Also, look for kids menu, where we were able to get $9 arctic char!

Also, stop by groceries stores, the big ones are Bonus and Kronan.  The prices are pretty reasonable,  8 apples for $5, etc.  We'd especially recommend

Skyr - local yogurt

Icelandic lamb - just cook yourself, 3 minutes or so either side. they are amazing.  Plus you see sheep roaming everywhere in Iceland, so you know they lived a great life.

Eggs - they just taste better here

Icelandic chocolate - made with liquorice.  I really regret not buying more. :(

Hakarl - and just for fun, the local specialty: fermented shark. Get the smallest size you can find, and dare your friends back home to try it.  I was the only one who ate more than one piece. ;-)  It's a bit like dry cod but fishier and spongier, with a faint ammonia smell.

The cashier lady at the grocery store told us that she only know 5-6 people who like it, and they eat it with a stiff drink. ;-)

We brought a lot of food that we ended up not finishing, Why fill up when there's delicious local options! ;-)

Definitely try out the bakeries, e.g. SandHolt in Reykiyavik. Everything we tried was super tasty, both pastries and sandwiches like smoked salmon and pulled pork.

We also stopped by Icelandic Brewery like Smiðjan Brugghús in Vik that has delicious offering including a unique Icelandic Ale that’s really refreshing.

Lodging

Where to stay, because we need to see the key sites in 5 days, we opted to stay for 2 nights near the Golden Circle and3 nights further East at Kirkjub., the latter so we only need to drive at most 3h 40mins a day.  My brother-in-lawneeded to get back in 5 days while we stayed on for an extra day and did some site seeing around where we stayed.

We stayed at two different AirBnBs, one near the Golden Circle.The other about 1.5 hous away from the Glacier Lake.

Yes, you’ll be driving, a lot.  Plus there are unpaved gravel roads (not on the Ring Road but e.g. near by the Golden Circe.  Be sure to get a comfortable car!  

Car rental  

We rented a 7 seater off-road SUV, that turned out to be a complete overkill, not too mention costs 50% more and a gas guzzler.  We ended up with a very stripped-down LandRover Defender that's stick shift, in which we feel very bump.  While my brother-in-law drove it a bit and thought it's fun to drive, my husband who had to drive it for 3-4 hours a day didn't find it very fun at all. :)

You're not supposed to go off-road with a rental car anyway, so in the summer, don’t get an off-road SUV unless you are into that kind of things. ;-)

Driving  

We drove 2.5h - 3.5h everyday.  It wasn't too bad as there are always nice sites to stop by to see, and the drive is beautiful with changing scenes of lava field, mountains, waterfalls, snowy peaks, and lovely streams.  

And lots of sheeps throughout.  We didn't allow screentime during the drive, and the kids did just fine.

And yes, at least one cow herd crossing the road. ;-)

Weather & Packing

Weather in Iceland can be unpredictable.  And even in late August or their end of summer/early fall,it only gets to at most 55 degrees high / 45 degrees low.   We brought plenty of layers, and either thicker waterproof jackets or the outer shell of our ski jackets, and waterproof /quick dry pants, and relatively waterproof sneakers for walking.

We've heard from friends that saw rain everyday on their trips. We did have one day of bad rain and wind, and it wasn’t pleasant.  When it got less strong, we went to see the sites.  We lucked out with mostly days with suns and clouds, and for a bit, it was warm enough to wear just a T shirt. :)
