y'all ever think about how D&D players are probably the most equipped to witness actual, Biblical angels and not lose their absolute shit??

Our DMs throw weird shit at us on the regular. Hell, the shitloads of monsters available, both canon and homebrewed, are enough to make any regular person quake in fear (monster fuckers are not included in this estimation).

But then you have this band of ragtag misfits who go into the most inhospitable, dangerous, threat-laden places as a JOB. Most players do their research, many have done The Math to calculate actual dimensions of these things and graph it out to show what it would be like to stand next to one.

You can't tell me D&D players wouldn't look at the multi-winged, many-eyed wheelie bois and think anything other than 'oh shit when did the Multiverse get here?'

-4 feet tall

-its mentioned that she has "rainbow robes" and ive decided to interpret that as sunset colored

And yes, Wyn IS a grave cleric still! Well...sort of. She's like a grave cleric if you made a grave cleric like a warlock. She sort of, uh. resurrected her brother by reaching out to a god (??) of death and offered up part of her own life to bring him back. (And then he came back wrong, and then he wasn't really even her brother anymore, and then he ended up dead a year later anyway, so it was not really a great deal to make in the end. WHOOPS.)

Her current iteration is in a Curse of Strahd game and my DM hasn't had much need for info about whatever entity brought her brother back, so I've been sitting on a homebrew idea for a god (??) that I'll suggest if it ever become relevant. I'm thinking they'll be the Laborer of the Kindly Death, and their tenants will probably revolve around the work it takes to ensure a good death, or at least the best death possible. I'm thinking they'll appear as a common gravekeeper, dour and unkempt but kindly, carrying a shovel coated in grave dirt. I'm thinking their symbology includes spades, mushrooms, moths - you know, a sweeping autumnal theme. And I'm thinking Wyn will subscribe heavily to this after seeing her brother waste away like he did in that last year. She doesn't blame the thing that brought him back after all, not entirely. They told her what the cost would be. They told her what it could mean. She agreed to it. Now she knows that there's work to be done to make a death good, and she's committed herself to helping other people do it so that no one makes the same mistake that she and brother did.

WHICH IS TO SAY, she's a very tragic gal, and her magic reflects that LMAO. She specializes in healing, but it tends to feel a bit draining to both her and the receiver, and feels less like a warmth and more like a numbing while she works. Which, for some things, can be a blessing! But it's not entirely comfortable. Her offensive magics are also often very chill, and tend to be more on the rot-and-ruin spectrum of things. She uses the mushrooms that grow on her horns and tail (a mark from her god) in a LOT of her casting, which her magic responds to by feeling very damp and decaying. Sad wet rat energy for sure LMAO. Except when she gets mad. Her hellish rebuke lives up to its name, because somewhere under the poise and the hard-won ideals, girl is mad as hell at a lot of things.

You wouldn't know, though. Look how sweet she looks! Totally innocent. :>

ooh ok!! so! get ready for a long post!! (my immediate response 2 seeing this ask was basically the screaming seagull meme so. i am going 2 ramble. i am going 2 ramble under a readmore actually because this is going to be a lot)

there are two parties with different players acting independently in the same city at the moment (the city is called Corner and could get an essay of its own honestly), and aside from the dm i'm the only player in both, which means i am the bearer of the curse (many juicy secrets). we're deliberately not sharing anything between the actual players so that if/when we do all someday meet, we can get some really good genuine responses to whatever it is that's shared in character. i am half looking forward to and half dreading playing two characters simultaneously because i've seen joe make players do it before and i dont think i can handle being a foppish bard and a miserable geriatric all at once. there's also a blog specifically for campaign aesthetics lmao @askh-thetics

the two parties are Calleach's Ward (lvl 11), and the Planet Raiders (lvl 6). they do not know the others exist, but the odd rumour of the ward's actions are occasionally drifting towards the raiders, because they tend to make uh. more public moves.

Raiders are probably easier to nail down characters as it's just the four pcs at the moment:

left to right are Nephythys, a tiefling witch played by @becausesecondsnotthesame, Nerve, a virian (half orc) kind-of-artificer-but-actually-a-homebrew-class-the-dm-made, Myah, an aasimar illrigger/hell knight played by @recovering-vamp, and Alistair Fonley, beloved human rogue played by @geoantennae.

all hand picked by our dragon patron Lady Vesper to explore the old worlds (ancient, abandoned, technologically advanced planets that most of the inhabitants of this world originally came from before the elves and vir bombed the whole place back to fantasy era technological capabilities) and bring back whatever they can get their nasty little hands on. morally ambiguous, in it for the cash and the exploration, having to keep the fact that they can travel to space a major secret because that is Not common technology.

Calleach's Ward on the other hand! oh boy!! bound by oath to "stand in the path of destruction" and protect the chains that hold the fragments of this planet together, the ward has been playing since september 2019 and has therefore been through a lot more pcs in that time. and yes i am going to list all of them. heads up there will be terrible old art in here.

the orignal party comp was (starting at fall w his back to us and going clockwise round the table) Fall, elf bard, Claudia, human ranger, Iovanus, virian monk, Aamali, aasimar warlock, Anyte, dwarven cleric (played by @femmemins), and Kaius, tiefling rogue. (yes i only draw full party shots in taverns, what of it.)

Iovanus was eventually replaced by Elias, human artificer and eternal victim of bullying by the rest of the party for being Vaguely Sensible. Aamali and Claudia's players left over time, and for a while Anyte and Kaius were replaced with Ranha (merfolk barbarian/pirate, @femmemins‘s new guy) and Lila (elf witch) respectively. also during this time fall (who is the only member who has stayed exclusively with the ward since joining) got alchemically petrified (by an enemy) then alchemically reanimated (by Elias), so he looks a little different nowadays, being made of stone and all

NOW however, we've moved from Kingdom to Corner; Lila and her moth gf went off in one direction, Ranha in another, Elias returned to the Virum Orcorum, and Anyte came home but as a valour bard now! Fall and Anyte travelled to Corner to rescue Kaius from whatever nonsense he had gotten himself into, and enlisted the help of Rikixio, a dragonborn beastheart / private investigator who decided that the party as it stood was interesting and chaotic enough that he wants to stick around and see what they do next. which means the "ward" at this point is these chucklefucks

Some dnd doodles and infodump! (Slightly nsfw which is why it’s under a cut, but nothing graphic, my character is wearing a bra and skirt because I was designing her tattoos)

this is tawny! she’s the first character I ever played in a long-running campaign, and we’re going to be ending it on Wednesday which is crazy to think about, since we’ve been playing since pre-covid. She’s not completely gone though! I used her for what I expected to be a one-shot when I was hanging out with my high school friends over the summer, but haaaah that campaign’s been going on 6 months now.

She’s a circle of the stars boggard druid, but when I was first playing her, I wasn’t familiar with a lot of the mechanics, so I didn’t know I could do wild shape or divination stuff, and missed out on a lot of cool things, but my dms have been great at teaching me how to take full advantage of such a really cool character. Her race is a homebrew swamp-elf basically, and they communicate using a cantrip that lets them summon little fireflies that dance in patterns to convey ideas. And she’s an astronomer, so a lot of her spells are radiant/light themed! I used guiding bolt basically like eldritch blast lmao.

I was trying to develop ideas for her magical tattoo designs here, because that’s something our dm let me control, and the neat trick is that the tattoo is actually her staff! It’s called “Continuity’s End” (because our dm heard me joking about how Laoche stands for “LAnd Of Continuity HEll” and thought that was funny), but it has the power to transform at will. It also has a really interesting backstory!

see, Tawny is the navigator of “Better Be Bouyant”, the dysfunctional pirate crew (?) (we haven’t actually done much piracy) that accidentally killed something which wasn’t actually her god and ended the world that one time. But shortly before that whole debacle, she had a dream where her veritable god spoke to her, and called itself “Consequence.” She woke up the next morning with this mysterious tattoo that stretched across her back, over her shoulder, and curled around her collarbone. The DM let me choose the design from that description, and in a later fight, I was able to transform the tattoo to its staff-form, and use it to harness the life-force of the beast, which let me turn into it with my wildshape! so I’m not limited to the normal rules of that trait :D

The tattoo design is based on Praxis (the southern mariner’s compass), the Argo Navis (Theseus’s ship), and a wave! yaaaayyy for ~symbolism~

Gotten tattoos: yep! they have two large pieces from before being arrested and negotiated into joining the alliance. they start under the jaw and both sides of the neck, going across the shoulders, along and down the arms, coming to an end on the forearms, and they shelled out for that fancy ink, that’s a little bit holographic/iridescent, where the colors would shift and glint in the light as they moved. obviously they’re gone when miranda rebuilds mercy, but they’re absolutely still around in the sports coach au

mostly there’s just better games out there, a lot of which even do the same kind of thing as dnd. i dont really have anything against most editions. i really just hate 5e. i think it’s a badly designed, boring game that sacrifices any interesting design decisions, character options, or settings in favor of a really bland & shallow ruleset thats meant to piss off as few people as possible rather than anything else and is made by a company that wants to make a million billion dollars by coasting off being the only rpg anybody knows and doing a bunch of shitty rick and morty stranger things crossovers rather than actually being a good game with fun content.

like, it’s not even about making it easier to play. you can make a game easier to play without also making it really lame and bad like 5e did. pathfinder 2e managed to streamline the hell out of what is essentially an even more bloated and fucked up version of 3.5 and it’s honestly my favorite fantasy rpg mechanically

Hi I recently started following your blog and its been a big help for gathering materials and ideas for my own campaign. I just am having trouble understanding what the Underdark is and how that is in relation to the material plane. Is it apart of it or how does it work. If you could let me know that would be fantastic! Oh and any other timps for first time DMs!

First of all, I am SO sorry this is so late like I read this early in the morning before work and then told myself i’d answer when I got home. But boom, weeks later and here we are. I am The Worst and I apologize but IM HERE NOW. Since I waited so long, i’m gonna go all out for you anon. So prepare for a long answer!

The Underdark is a complicated setting that I was first introduced to through the first few episodes of Critical Role season 1! On the wikipedia, it says:

“It is described as a vast subterranean network of interconnected caverns and tunnels, stretching beneath entire continents and forming an underworld for surface settings.”

Some consider it to be apart of the prime material plane (the normal world), and others consider it a realm in and of itself. You can see it primarily in the Forgotten Realms and World of Greyhawk campaign settings. Hell, its even in the video game, Neverwinter Nights! So we know it’s popular. But what is it?

Well that’s honestly up to much interpretation. The Underdark can be what you want it to be. But there are some shining features of the Underdark that make it what it is:

Its underground

It’s dark, it’s dank, and it’s cold

Usually inhabitted by grotesque monsters and uncommon races such as drow, illithids, aboleth, duergar, kuo-toa, ect.

Much of those who inhabit the Underdark are (in past official campaign settings at least) of neutral to evil alignments. This is optional though imo.

There’s usually an entrance or portal into the Underdark somewhere on the surface or in the prime material plane. That part is up to you to create.

In my homebrew campaign, the entrance to the Underdark is through a massive, inactive, hollowed out volcano in which the drow of my continent reside within. In the Forgotten Realms setting, there are ports to the Underdark via the Underchasm which is a huge canyon created by a spellplague. Seen here:

But you can make your port of entrance anything you want it to be! That’s the fun part.

Moving on, I like to reference the level-system used in the Forgotten Realms (because while most like to shit on it, i think it’s a very well developed campaign setting OKAY don’t hate me) to describe the Underdark’s specific chasms and their purpose and what they hold.

Upperdark

The first three miles below the surface. It was here where the surface dwellers and those in the Underdark most often met. 

Middledark

Located three to ten miles below the surface, this layer was where most of the Underdark cities were located. 

Lowerdark

Ten miles or more below the surface, the Lowerdark was where even those who knew the Underdark were loath to go.

So it’s obvious that the Underdark is more than just a dark, dank hole in the ground of someone’s campaign setting. As described above, there are settlements too! Thus, the presence of an economy as well. Typically, an Underdark economy will consist of armor, timber and weapons, as well as the darker trades such as slavery, magics, and exotic goods.

But usually, there isn’t just one massive, all hailing economy in the whole of the Underdark. The Underdark is a huge place, typically encompassing entire continents or entire planets. It is often a lawless place in most settings, so economies and rules of the land can vary from city to city, state to state, continent to continent. It is entirely up to you how you want to split up your Underdark setting or how you’d like to civilize it.

Personally, i’d love to see a unique take on the Underdark where they’re not the dark, horrific place that everyone views them to be. But instead, they’re a civilized society with some rather dark leaning practices. But that’s just me.

Just keep in mind that because the Underdark setting is usually so massive, you shouldn’t feel the need to develop the entire thing. It’s like creating an entirely new world in most cases, and I highly doubt your players who live in the prime or the surface will find the time to explore all of it. That is unless your campaign setting IS the Underdark. Then, by all means– GO NUTS!

All in all, the Underdark has a few iconic and unique characteristics that should probably be met so it’s recognized as the Underdark. But for the most part, it is still entirely up to you how you brew it up! That’s the great thing about Dungeons & Dragons, is you can rip all the pieces of something you like from different settings and paste it all together to create something new and unique, never before seen! sorry I sat on this for a long time gdkjfgh but hell yeah!! I love talking abt my ocs!! but uhhh I have A Lot of dnd ocs so i’ll just talk abt my 3 main boys. not too much tho since they are in active campaigns and ppl from those games follow me lmao

first off is Crow! he’s a tiefling rogue (arcane trickster) who grew up in the circus as an acrobat. he was Very Good at it and Very Competitive abt it, but he ended up losing his horns and tail in a Traumatic Event, which threw him way the fuck off (obviously). he kept performing for a while using masks n colourful costumes, but he left not long after. now he’s a wandering entertainer, playing the violin, pulling various schemes and scams, stealing, y’know. Whatever He Wants. but you’ll never ever ever see his face.

then there’s Finnegan who’s,,, also a tiefling rogue,, he’s the bastard son of a high class fancy human noble in waterdeep. he grew up w his dad (the fancy noble) but he kinda had to b kept secret (cant just b Openly Having Affairs And Bastards, and ppl are chill w tieflings but a first generation tief is A Bit Suspicious) so it was a weird n sheltered childhood, turned rebellious party teenage years, which led to Some Shit that took him down like 100 notches pretty fast. now he’s off adventuring and exploring to figure out how to b A Functional Person and like. care abt people I guess. chaotic neutral to chaotic good. 

and my last campaign boy,,, Miles. my son,, my human paladin adn certified Wonderful Grumpus. he had a Good Childhood and then a Very Bad Childhood and then he joined The Order Of Paladins (I just realized it has the acronym TOOP) which is like a hero organization that’s sorta military but not rly. he’s got the ability to manipulate electrical currents, and he uses it to heal/buff his allies, and sometimes for damage (its a superhero homebrew and its So So Fuckign Good). but he learns some Secrets, becomes a Rebellious Shithead, and gets booted-but-not-officially-booted from the paladins. now he’s goin to Hero School, and he hates everything about it besides hitting and helping ppl
