This will always be one of my favorite fight scenes from any movie - It is a masterful continuous shot of mayhem that had to be planned out so well, yet practiced so little to get it all done it one take.
Raw talent from Tony Jaa and this stunt team.
You better give him his god damned elephant.

The Mosley Review: Expendables 4
Tumblr media
I believe we're all familiar with the term "too little, too late" correct? Well that's especially true for this installment of a dying now dead franchise. The first film was campy fun with a healthy amount of blood, guts and a promise that was to see the action legends of the past come together in a massive film. That promise was fulfilled and then we got a sequel that doubled down. The second film improved on everything the first film did and fulfilled the dream of seeing the big 3 action stars of the 80's together on screen gunning down goons in the most explosive and violent way possible. Then the franchise went completely off the rails with its PG-13 third entry. The franchise really lost its identity by trying to pander to the younger audience by watering down the best elements of the franchise and over crowding the film with the popular stars at the time. Now comes this entry that desperately tries to get back on track with it being the hyper violent action driven vehicle it started out as. Well, it got the violence part right but after that, we are treated to one of the dumbest, lackluster and uninteresting action films I've seen in quite some time. Not only are most of the action scenes so boring, the characters themselves are tired and should have retired along time ago. The novelty this franchise used to be have was all but drained from this sequel and I was so sad watching it happen.
Tumblr media
Sylvester Stallone returns as Barney Ross and he still has the same charm as the character. He finally admits he's starting to get too old for his life style and is gone shortly after for most of the film. Jason Statham returns as his best friend Lee Christmas and he continues to be a fun character. The chemistry between them was the heart of the franchise and it continues here for the most part. Megan Fox joins the franchise as Lee's new girlfriend and CIA operator, Gina. Megan has done good work before, but this was by far her worst performance as she only is there for eye candy and delivering the worst onscreen chemistry I've ever seen between two "lovers". Randy Couture returns as Toll Road and he still does the same thing he's done since the first film. He delivers many random facts that somehow returns to him talking about his ear. Dolph Lundgren returns as Gunner Jensen and I still enjoy seeing his character go through many life changes. The character has shown real progress since his drunken days in the original and I liked that he has controlled that demon. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson joins the team as Easy Day and he does his job. There really wasn't anything special about the character and he typically just fades into the background even when he's front and center. The great Tony Jaa joins the team as a former Expendable, Decha. There was a fun story that surrounded the character even though it was nothing you haven't seen before. I still enjoyed his presence on screen and when he gets to fighting, its still a joy to watch. Jacob Scipio joins as the son of former Expendable Galgo, Galan. He tries to capture that same energy that Antonio Banderas had in the previous film and that's basically it. Andy Garcia was all over the place as CIA Agent Marsh. He delivers his trademark charm in the beginning and the swings for the fences by the end of the film. He truly was having fun with the character and you could tell. The amazing Iko Uwais was the main protagonist of the film, Suarto Rahmat and what a waste. Sure he gets to show his amazing martial arts prowess, but that’s all. He wasn't menacing or even really that much of a threat once you get to the heart of his plot. He almost felt like a F1 racer stuck in the bus lane in a school pick up area. He never really got to open up against a worthy opponent.
Tumblr media
The score by Guillaume Roussel was nothing special. It was a decent backing track to the action in the film and accents the few emotional moments in the film. The action in the film was somewhat decent, but truly lacked the joyous feel of playing with your favorite action figures the others had. It all felt cheaply made and even more so with over use of CGI for a franchise known for its practical stunts. The extreme close ups in the middle of all the fights truly showed the lack of skill in filming and design of action sequences. This film really knocked the genre back a few decades and I was sorely disappointed and bored. Honestly, if you have any curiosity in seeing this hopefully final chapter, don't waste your money and wait for streaming. This is undoubtedly one of the worst films of 2023. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Tifa Lockhart and her Fighting Style
I did say about wanting to do Tifa’s character analysis. Instead of focusing on her background or personality, I am a lot more interested with her fighting skill.
As someone who likes and is training martial art, I have my eyes on this kind of stuff. I’ve always wanted to know what kind of martial arts did the devs referred to when they were creating Tifa’s movement set. Were they from Aikido? Could be Capoeira? Or maybe Taekwondo? Some of her movement reminds me to Tony Jaa and Yuri Boyka.
Tumblr media
The devs did say Tifa uses action-packed fighting moves, with simple control orders, similar like in the fighting games. So, they must be based on something in order to create realistic movement for her. Eg- Law (Tekken) his fighting style based on Drunken Master. Chun Li (Street Fighter) from Chinese Kenpo.
Let’s take a quick look on Tifa’s background. There was no firm record about her martial art background and all I got was just her being a student of Zangan. She learned Zangan-Ryu from him. Zangan was a resident of Nibelheim when the 'Nibelheim incident' occur. He found Tifa at the Mako Reactor and took her to a safer place. Knowing Tifa was badly injured, Zangan then brought Tifa to Midgar for further medical care. After some time, Zangan left Tifa to settle his thing. (in OG) He left a note on Tifa's piano after Nibelheim got reconstructed.
Tumblr media
I watched Last Order again to reconfirm something. In that short OVA, Zangan and Tifa already knew each other. In which I quickly assume that Tifa was already his student.
Lets say, Tifa became Zangan's student at the age of 13 yrs old. The Nibelheim incident took place when Tifa was 15y/o. So, there were 2 yrs for Tifa to master the basic martial art movements. And Zangan took her under his wing at Midgar for probably a year or so before he left her alone.
Now, back to her fighting style. Previously, I thought Tifa's style was based on Muay Thai. And in second thought, perhaps it was Taekwondo, but Tifa (Remake, AC) uses her fist a lot, so Taekwondo is not her main style. Besides, Tifa is more to an ‘attacker’ type of fighter instead of “defender’.
After gone through researching, this is what I’ve found ; (Pls note that this is nothing official)
1. Sommersoult (Muay Thai)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Refocus (Muay Thai) Some may suggest it’s a Taekwondo move, but judging from Tifa’s way of jumping, I think it more to Muay Thai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Dolphin Flurry (Gymnastic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Divekick (Gymnastic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Overpower (Taekwondo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. back cartwheel (Gymnastic)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Starshower (Boxing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Refocus (Muay Thai/ Taekwondo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9.  Unbridled Strength (Boxing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Dolphin Flurry (Boxing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got super excited when I found the similarities in Tifa’s skill and the real-life fighter. I was like, “Look at my Tifa!! She’s pretty and strong. Pretty strong”. There are still some more but it’s hard to get a proper shot for Tifa’s movement. She has incredible speed.
As a conclusion, I would say that Tifa’s combat is Mixed Martial Art, with her dominant skills will be 1. Kickboxing | 2. Taekwondo | 3. Gymnastic | 4. Muay Thai. I’m glad the devs added Gymnastic to her fighting set, it gives an elegant movement to her instead of only violence
On to her background. These fighting skills take MANY-MANY-MANY YEARS to learn and yet Tifa manages to become a master of these in just a few years. Can you tell how awesome Tifa is? Unlike Cloud who got trained in military service, and his strength was enhanced with Mako infusion + Jenova Cell, Barret has a huge gun arm and Aerith being the last creature of her kind has magical abilities, Tifa on the other hand, she, as a normal people, has to work extra hard to gain these amazing skills. Even with these superior techniques, Tifa still remain calm, soft, and shy to everyone around her. This is something that I really admire about Tifa.
Well ofc, 20y/o anime character is equivalent to 30y/o experienced fighter. 3 months training is similar to 3 years training. But we’re talking about fictional character here, not a real life person. So, it is understandable.
I would have to say this, but training martial arts is not popular among girls. I’m a trainee, and I only have 1 ACTIVE FEMALE FRIEND (my only sparring buddy) in our big team. Girls dont like sweat or train their muscles. They love the title of ‘a student of martial art’ but they dont love the hard training. Tifa was one of a hundred girls that was ready to go through hell and yet still able to remain soft.
I have a theory (or more like a fandom) on why Tifa decided to learn Martial Arts. Remember the Vow under the star? Tifa asked Cloud to save her if she was in trouble, she asked her to be her ‘Hero’.
Tumblr media
Right after Cloud left the village, Tifa probably became interested to learn some fighting skills. And then, there was Zangan in her hometown. Kinda like, “Cloud will become really strong after this and I want to be strong too”. And the reason she wanted to be strong perhaps she wanted to impress Cloud by the time they meet again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Devs said Tifa wants a ‘Hero’ to save her, but they never mentioned about Tifa wanting to be a ‘Heroine’ (although in the FF7R, she’s the heroine). Even in Crisis Core, Tifa said it was every girl’s dream of having a ‘hero’ to save them. She never talked about heroine. Perhaps, being a heroine was never in her thought.
I would like to think that Tifa not only wants a Hero to save her, but she also wants to be someone her Hero can rely on. She doesnt want to be the ‘princess’ that stays behind the hero, rather she wants to be an ‘equal partner’ her hero can trust. As if her priority is to make sure the Hero is well covered, both emotionally and physically. And the hero she’s looking forward to...is Cloud Strife
Tumblr media
And that was why she worked through hell so that she could stand RIGHT NEXT to her Hero, become the HERO’S SHIELD, support his back and more importantly, able to catch the hero before he fall down.
The more I learn about Tifa, the deeper my love goes for her.

Fight for My Entertainment
Over human history, people have found entertainment in a lot of different things. Tastes have changed over time but love of music has been present since the rise of man. Games of athletic prowess have provided drama and amazement for centuries. Even dancing has been a great source of entertainment to the population in some form throughout recorded history. One other thing that seems to keep an audience’s attention is the good old fight to the death. Although there are extreme fighting sports that are popular today, actual murder is severely frowned upon to say the least. Movie audiences still like to see portrayals of the fight to the death and there have been many movies, both good and bad, that satisfy this blood lust. I just wanted to go over some of my personal favorites (and some that really suck):
Tumblr media
Ben-Hur (1959) is one of my least favorite movies, but I got to give respect to that chariot battle. I have been to Rome and seen the Circus Maximus field where the movie was filmed and where actual chariot races once took place. The horses and the outfits were great but the real interest to the audience in ancient Rome was the real chance of horrific trampling death with every turn of the race. Visually amazing with dramatic appeal. If this movie was only this, it would be a masterpiece, but there is almost 3 hours of boredom attached around it that really didn’t interest me. Great scene, though.
Tumblr media
Spartacus (1960), on the other hand, is one of my favorite movies. It is another epic film and lasts a little bit long, but there are many huge battle scenes with thousands of extras and great one on one gladiator battles. Kirk Douglas is amazing as a gladiator turned general who took on the Roman army. There are a lot of one-on-one fights in this film and, despite the age of the film, still seem pretty realistic. This film is the reverse of Ben-Hur for me, having only 15 minutes of boring material surrounded by great scenes. Fantastic movie.
Edit Note: After rewatching, there are a lot less gladiator fights than I remember. In fact, I only now remember two, maybe three. There is also a lot more preparation for battle than actual battle. The best fighting part is likely when the gladiators first attempt to escape. This movie focuses much more on the repercussions on forcing people to fight instead of actually showing the fights.
Tumblr media
Enter the Dragon (1973) has to be mentioned because it has freaking Bruce Lee. A martial arts phenomenon that passed away far too early, Bruce Lee fights in a tournament to have a chance for revenge. Unlike many fights in which the action was sped up, he is rumored to have been told to slow down so that the camera operators could keep up. This doesn’t have massive crowds but there are still fights to the death for the entertainment of others. I do want to mention that this film is kind of racist and is exploitative along the lines of stereotypes, but the skill is so amazing that I think it rises above the B movie genre and is one of my absolute favorite movies.
Tumblr media
The Running Man (1987) is a movie that is absolutely amazing but not what I would call good. The script is weak, the dialogue is corny, and the acting is laughable. However, it does have Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura in the same movie. I mean, c’mon. A bunch of guys who are serving prison terms are put in a maze with professional killers that have weapons like chainsaws, fire suits, and electric projectiles. And this is all for the pleasure of a TV audience. Very much the modern day Colosseum scenario and a lot of fun to watch.
Tumblr media
Bloodsport (1988) is not a good movie but it is the reason that Jean Claude Van Damme is a household name. The “Muscles from Brussels” really shows off his high kicking skill in a tournament that features more than one fatality in the ring. Look at how much air that guy is getting...the athleticism can’t be denied. The film has a pretty strong cult following and it is another “fun” movie to watch because it does show a lot of very interesting matchups. By the way, the murderous villain in both Enter the Dragon and Bloodsport is played by the same Hong Kong martial artist turned bodybuilder, Mr. Bolo Yeung. A great fighting filming needs both a great hero and a powerful villain and this movie does have both of those things...but that is about it.
Tumblr media
Mortal Kombat (1995) is based on the video game of the same name and boasts supernatural fighters that end their bouts with gory fatalities. It totally delivers exactly that. There are no promises of nice sets, interesting back stories, or special effects and that is good because that doesn’t happen. The one-liners are cheesy, the martial arts are very good, and the soundtrack bumps throughout the entire film. Good enough for me.
Tumblr media
Gladiator (2000) “We who are about to die salute you!” I guess that you can’t have a list of gladiator movies with putting in this one. Russell Crowe plays a disgraced Roman soldier named Maximus who loses his family and is thrown into the ring to die. He works his way through to eventually take on a Roman leader and the whole thing is epic. There are a lot of battles in the Colosseum and they are all glorious. As far as realism and quantity of fights, I think this might be the best. Directed by Ridley Scott, it really takes the viewer and thrusts them into ancient Rome. “Are you not entertained?”
Tumblr media
Battle Royale (2000) is the film that so many people cough under their breath when somebody brings up the Hunger Games. This film features a class of children that tormented their teacher so they were all shipped by bus to an island to kill each other until only one person is left. Warning, there is a whole lot of murder and suicide with sharp objects involving children. Each kid also has a choker that blows out their throat if they stop moving. Far and away more gory than its American counterpart, this film does not hold back nor are the contestants prepared for their predicament in any way. Very interesting but really makes the viewer feel that this kind of competition is wrong. Not a “fun” watch.
Tumblr media
Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior (2003) is a fantastic martial arts movie starring the great Tony Jaa as a fighter who partakes in underground street fights in an attempt to find the head of his village’s sacred statue. He takes on some crazy opponents who are much bigger than him, but he is one of the most high flying fighters I have ever seen. His flying knee attacks are just phenomenal. When this guy fights, I am entertained and I am not afraid to admit it.
Tumblr media
The Hunger Games (2012) is the story of youths in a dystopian future who fight to the death representing their district. This is all for the pleasure of the super rich who watch and give help to those players that they like. I think that the premise is so interesting but the heavy helping of teen angst amongst the child death seems weird. The desperation for companionship in the face of death was so much better in Battle Royale, but I still enjoyed this movie. The build up took too long for me, but the last half of the movie is gladiator arena glory.
Tumblr media
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) is a movie that I just thought of last minute but it does have a planet where warriors fight in an arena for the entertainment of Jeff Goldblum. There is a battle between Thor and the Hulk and that is all I really needed to know to be interested. Apparently this fight is amazing to everyone, even aliens on a trash planet. You know that audiences have a taste for carnage when they want to see two superheroes battle.
This list is by no means anywhere near complete so feel free to add on any other great gladiator films. These are just examples of how movie audiences seem to have a little bit of a blood lust and shows our tastes in entertainment have not changed as much as we might think since the days of the Roman Colosseum. I am not immune, but I am glad that my desire to see fighting can be quenched by acting without the need to see somebody actually die.

Today I’m a mother to a 16 year old. The thought of being responsible for a human being still overwhelms me.
If you knew what goes through my brain, you wouldn’t trust me with anything that breathes but God has different ideas. I guess the old man saw something that I seem to discover daily as I raise this child.
I used to change diapers as if it’s a roads planning meeting. Where is that mat, did they say the powder comes before or after the bum is wiped. It was a project and there were specifications and procedures that needed to be followed. Follow procedure Kuri and the kid will be ok, I would tell myself.
She was a calm one this one. Never said a word, sat on the car seat with hands clasped as if she’s praying - Lord, if I make it with this mother, I will dedicate my life to serving you. I think that’s the prayer because with a mother who doesn’t sit still, I see Uber receipts, lift clubs, early morning door slams as she rushes off to a prayer walk, Homecell and other church stuff she does and that confirms that she made a pray very similar to that one. I think it’s working out for her because she bursts through my bedroom door to tell me one story after the other with eyes beaming and a wide smile that only says, life’s good.
She’s a communicator this one and before you say anything, she doesn’t take it from me. She has a mouth full of words that I also don’t know where they come from so it can’t be me. I don’t know when that voice got unleashed but she has not stopped talking ever since. I have 5 set of ears to manage her. I had to borrow ears from my parents and friends because I couldn’t keep up. After a long day of fighting corporate South Africa, my head can’t always absorb everything.
She’s a bully, yes she is and before you point fingers, she doesn’t get it from me either. The only reason her brother is still alive, still in school and managing to pass, is because she’s the self appointed mother hen. I don’t escape the bullying tendencies, nooo. I get told how to discipline my own child. Mummy, if Kulani doesn’t get his act together, tell him you’ve reached your last straw and you’ll leave him at a random traffic light to find his way in life. Instead of confidently saying I’ve got this mothering thing together, I whimper and say but I try, I threaten him, I even promised to take him out but he still plays video games the whole day and doesn’t brush his teeth, what can I do. She then spins around, switches the tv off, confiscates the cellphone and we are all banned to our study desks to study and read a book.
She’s compassionate and has empathy. Recently, she came and told me maybe she’s a bit hard on her brother and I’m like really? You only figuring this out now? Didn’t say it out loud since I’m the child in this conversation. You know mummy, I must learn to encourage him more. You know he responds well when Aunty Chantel tells him he will look good if he puts a little more effort. I’m like go on...from now on mummy, I’m going to be a sister that encourages instead of threatens and I’m like heaven, you did all this on your own, I did nothing but ngiyabonga.
She loves nature, art and being herself. She mixes her own face masks, loves her natural hair and insists on speaking Tsonga. She self taught by the way because listen “I’m mixed, of color 🤪” yes Tsonga is my mother tongue - no guys my mother is Sotho, Mupulane. Why didn’t you say father tongue, it would have made sense in my brain. The confusion in my speech started right there. My mum and dad are still correcting my speech til today so jaa, I won’t take credit for her Tsonga speaking because I’m terrible but I try.
She’s full of jokes this one and that humorous side is not me at all. We get front row seats daily to some comedy show and skits she does at random. Her favorite past time is to mimic my parents - how they drive the car, speak on the phone, basically, being themselves is funny in her eyes. She takes random pictures of me and her brother and captions them with a comment that simply says we are jokes to her.
I love her. She’s quick to give a hug and say I’m sorry. Please and thank you, are her best friends and I love you is her butter on warm bread. She reminds me of birthdays and special moments. She can sit the whole day and make cards out of nothing and makes sure her brother has the costume that’s needed at school the next day. She nurses me back to health when I’m sick and my hype man when I’m low on energy.
She loves me too by the way, she said it just a couple of hours ago after I fetched her from a hackathon. Yeah, you thought she’s a teen and stopped giving me kisses. I still get them, thank you. I used to get notes on my bed and now I receive secret messages on my phone, at random times in the day and it warms my heart. It can get deep sometimes and I’m sat down on the bed to be told how amazing I am and shouldn’t lose courage. I can do all I set my mind to. You are a great role model mummy and I’m proud of you. Now those words I recognize. Last time I heard them, I was saying them - maybe I’m hearing echoes but then again it’s her voice that makes me know it’s real.
She’s my daughter guys and I wouldn’t trade her for anything. So here’s to Ndzalama becoming 16, buckle up coz the ride is going to be exhilarating!

RIP Irrfan Khan: Did you know he lied to his parents and NSD to become an actor? - bollywood
https://www.liveindiatimes.com/rip-irrfan-khan-did-you-know-he-lied-to-his-parents-and-nsd-to-become-an-actor-bollywood/
The nation woke up to the shocking news that Irrfan Khan is no more. He died at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday, after battling a long illness.
Irrfan successfully straddled a career in Bollywood and Hollywood, with films such as Haider, The Lunchbox, Paan Singh Tomar, Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi and The Amazing Spider-Man. However, his journey to the big screen was not easy.
During an earlier appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, Irrfan had said that his family did not approve of a career in showbiz. “Unke liye, cinema jo hai, usko woh neechi nazar se dekhte the. Unko lagta tha ki naachne-gaane walon ka kaam hai (My family always looked down upon cinema. They thought it is a profession for those who sing and dance),” he had said.
Irrfan, who studied acting at the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD), lied to his parents to get them on board with his decision to study there. “Ek toh meri maa ko jhooth bola. Maine kaha ki main actor banne nahi jaa raha hoon. Main acting seekhne jaa raha hoon, seekh ke main Jaipur University mein aaunga aur teacher ban jaunga (First, I lied to my mother. I told her that I am not going there to become an actor. I told her I am going there to study acting, so I can come back and teach acting at Jaipur University),” he said.

Not only his family, Irrfan also said he lied to the NSD staff. “Aur phir NSD walon ko maine jhooth bola ki maine 10 naatak kiye hai aur cinema se mera koi lena dena nahi hai. Main naatak seekhunga aur phir naatak hi karunga bas. Yeh mere jhooth the. Lekin mere liye zaroori tha (To the NSD staff, I lied that I have done 10 plays and I have no interest in films. I want to learn theatre and I will only do theatre. These were my lies but I had to do it),” he said.
Meanwhile, the NSD condoled Irrfan’s demise and said in a statement, “Not only the National School of Drama has lost one of its meritorious members, Irrfan’s demise is a big loss to the Indian art and cinema fraternity.”
Irrfan is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and sons Babil and Ayan.

10 Greatest Martial Arts Movies Of All Time
After hundreds of movies, thousands of eye-popping fight scenes and millions of punches thrown...which ones are the best? Which ones have I been missing out on my whole life? Which ones must I have in my collection in order to not bring shame upon my family name? We’ve scoured the internet. Reviews. Forums. Amazon. Postings. Bulletins. And this list is what we’ve come up with as the greatest Kung-Fu movies of all time and why you should watch each one. Pay attention to movies involving Yuen Wo-Ping as either director or action director, there's a reason why half this list is movies where he was involved! If you want to watch trailers of these movies, go to: http://www.experiencemartialarts.com/articles/movies.html (you can also get directly to these movies in http://Amazon.com from this website)
#1 - Way of the Dragon (1979)
https://youtu.be/LQ-Biwp3jPg This is the only finished film to be written and directed by Bruce Lee. (Game of Death is the other one but is unfinished) We could write a lot about the plot, characters or fight scenes...but all you really care about is watching Bruce Lee fight Chuck Norris in the final battle. Martial Artists: Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris Director: Bruce Lee
#2 - Shaolin Temple (1982)
https://youtu.be/1Ym16e77L3U Depicts the amazing history of the Shaolin Temple, the focal point for Chinese Martial Arts. Think of the Shaolin Monks as Jedi Knights (an elite group of fighters) and the rest of China as the messed-up universe that Star Wars takes place in (people who are afraid of the elite fighters and want to take them out of power). Much work to do, you have, young Jet Li. *picture Yoda’s accent on that one* Define Irony: A movie shot at the site of the Shaolin Temple, telling a story about the fall of the Shaolin Temple, sparks so much public interest that the temple was re-opened shortly after the movie released. Martial Artist: Jet Li (His debut movie) Director: Chang Hsin-Yen
#3 - Ong Bak (2003)
https://youtu.be/VUAIQU7yoQE Raw action without wires, Tony Jaa brings a new martial arts style to the big screen and does so in style. Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) is stronger and more direct than the Chinese styles you’re used to seeing with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, giving a new look to how a martial arts movie can be done. You’ll be seeing more of him...guaranteed. Martial Artist: Tony Jaa Director: Prachya Pinkaew
#4 - Iron Monkey (1993)
https://youtu.be/C_PHfCon2zQ Doctor by day, thief by night...Iron Monkey is your classic Robin-hood meets Kung Fu. It’s an action packed flick that can’t go 5 minutes without an excellent fight scene. It all comes down to a battle between Iron Monkey (ie Robin Hood) and an ex Shaolin Monk (remember, these guys are like the Jedi Knights of Chinese martial arts...they’re elite). Remember that guy Yuen Wo-Ping I mentioned? Well he's the director in this one, so you know it's good! Martial Artists: Yu Rong-Guang, Donnie Yen Director: Yuen Wo-Ping Action Directors: Yuen Cheung-yan, Yuen Shun-yi
#5 - 5 Deadly Venoms (1978)
https://youtu.be/kX6EHqcvqyo No room form "martial arts beauties" in this one, there's so much blood and action that they only cast male actors. Exit the traditional elaborate costumes and enter the muscular, skin-bearing, bloody martial arts style that would become a trademark for director Chang Cheh. Each cast member is trained in an art resembling one of 5 venemous creatures (Scorpion, Snake, Centipede, Gecko, Toad) with the 6th cast member being trained in all 5. Six main martial arts actors = LOTS O’ ACTION Martial Artists: 6 Martial Artists (yes, 6 main characters) Director: Chang Cheh
#6 - The Seven Samurai (1954)
https://youtu.be/wJ1TOratCTo One of the greatest classic kung-fu movies of all time and arguable Kurosawa’s best work. Some Samurai of the time were down on their luck (homeless) and willing to do anything for a meal. A village under attack by bandits recruits a group of seven such Samurai warriors and asks them to help defend their village. The movie is about the Samurai teaching the village how to fight and culminates in a massive battle between a village and almost 50 attacking bandits. The acting is superb, the emotions run high and Kurosawa keeps you hooked from beginning to end. Martial Artists: 7 Martial Artists (all names you won't know since this movie is so old) Director: Akira Kurosawa
#7 - Legend of Drunken Master (1994)
https://youtu.be/xlZDzx8xiwo Some will say this is the greatest martial arts movie of all time because of it’s balance between plot-line, comedy, drama and amazing kung fu sequences. Probably Jackie Chan’s best martial arts performance. You’re going to love the final scene where you learn what “Drunken Master” really means. We’re talking box-splitting, fire-spitting craziness! Martial Artist: Jackie Chan Director: Lau Kar-leung
#8 - Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000)
https://youtu.be/mClOxgyWLs8 Based on a Pentalogy (yes, that’s 5 books) written by Wang Dulu, this movie covers mostly the 4th book. Critically acclaimed to cross international borders with it’s amazing character development, intricate plot, martial arts ideals, stunning special effects and quicker-than-the-eye fighting scenes, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon set a new standard for martial arts movies. Telling Zhang Ziyi (the lead female character and an amazing martial artist) to get back in the kitchen would likely cost you 50 punches to the “bags”. Be ready for subtitles, ‘cuz turning on the English track is like watching...uh...like watching a kung fu movie in English. Main Martial Artist: Chow Yun-fat Other Martial Artists: Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, Chang Chen, Cheng Pei-pei Director: Ang Lee Action Director: Yuen Wo-Ping
#9 - Kill Bill vol. 1 (2003)
https://youtu.be/499Aiwh_If0 You’re going to want your home theatre room for this one. It’s tough to beat beautiful women beating the crap out of each other in fast-paced, action-packed, make you cringe, bloody, gory, cut-’em-up (more buzz words go here) movie jam packed with as much martial arts death as possible. Tarantino expertly uses every camera angle and a plethora of special effects to deliver a better-than-real visual experience that gives this blood-and-guts thriller an artistic feel you’ll appreciate at the end. Did I mention is has Uma Thurman in it? (“Kill bill vol. 2” brings closure to the set, but hey...we had to choose one movie. Say “Five-Point-Palm Exploding Heart Technique” 5 times fast.) Actors: Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, Vivica A. Fox Director: Quentin Tarantino Action Director: Yuen Wo-ping
#10 - Fist of Legend (1994)
https://youtu.be/Wh5ydsMZUzg A classic story of Chinese vs. Japanese martial arts, Fist of Legend is actually a remake of the original Bruce Lee movie, Fist of Fury. If Bruce Lee is like the original James Bond, Jet Li is the Pierce Brosnan. He’ll never be the original, but the modern film-making and larger budget bring the entertainment value just a hair above the original Fist of Fury. (The ghost of Bruce Lee is probably going to strike me down for writing that) The Yuen Brothers are known for amazing action choreography, and they totally deliver on this one. (Casting Jet Li may have helped them a little too.) Martial Artist: Jet Li Director: Gordon Chan Action Directors: “The Yuen Brothers”
