IN CONVERSATION WITH:TEFOFFLINE
Tumblr media
Tefo Kosie best known as Tefoffline is a 20-year-old rapper, producer, and upcoming mixing engineer from Kanye, Ga Maila.
With the release of his mixtape 'Tomorrow Might Be Too Late' last December, he has further solidified his place as one of the most exciting new-age rappers in Botswana.
Tumblr media
Where did you grow up?
Well, I moved around a lot when I was growing up you know. Initially born in Kanye, I lived in Gabs for a good 8 years before moving to Mahalapye for like a year or so. Then I came back to the south, living in Molepolole for 4 years before moving to where I live now which is somewhere around the city.
How did you get into music?
I think I've always had a musical inclination from a very young age, mostly because of the music my parents was bumping. I was like 4 or 5 when I used to go into their room and play Michael Jackson and Johnny Mokhali CDs. In terms of Rap and Hip-Hop records, my uncles put me on man. During school holidays I used just get dumped at their places and these dudes was playing a whole lotta rap shit at the time. You know your Lil Wayne, Nicki, Drake and Rick Ross, those are the 4 niggas who properly introduced me to this Hip-Hop stuff. In terms of my rapping, I wrote my first ever rap at 9 while living in Mahalapye. But what had urged me to write a verse was the fact that me and my friends at the time had a thing we did after school where we'd rap and just talk about Hip-Hop stuff for hours on end before we all went home. We used to do like other niggas verse's you know like the stuff that was popular at the time and really just stuff we liked until one day i decided to surprise these dudes and rap my own shit that I wrote. It went as well as expected and I been kickin it since.
Tumblr media
How did you come up with the name Tefoffline?
I went on a long ass sabbatical in like 2021 just to get off social media and get my mind right and tbh, that was most amount of work I did, music-wise and just life-wise. Basically, thats where it came from. I felt like I worked better off my phone and the internet as a whole, so I just merged that with my name. It just took me back to how I used to make music before I encountered phones and shit. Back then it was just my imagination, pen, and diary, and I was the most efficient working under those conditions. I think I was going through a name change type situation at the time and I just didn't want a regular name that everybody had or some typical white man's name like nah. I needed to bring it home as well. I like that I included my real name in there because it just added to the authenticity. Real shit.
When did you start releasing music?
I only started dropping music in 2021 and to be honest anytime I think about it I can't help but laugh. I was in the kitchen one morning at like 9am and I was like 'Yo kana I did this other joint yesterday, maybe I should drop it, and I did and it went crazy. I think that when I really decided to go all in after seeing all the good things everybody had to say about my shit.
How would you describe your style of music?
Right now I won't lie i'd say I'm making some real stoner music. Like stoner anthems fr but seriously I'd say it's like a mix of alt-rap with jazzy elements and the truth really. That's what I describe it as because it's really music about my life you know, the ins and outs, ups and downs, the weird shit, everything. I look at it more like confessions in a way.
Tumblr media
What inspires the style of music you make?
A whole bunch of things tota. I like music combinations and rhythms that aren't conventional. The regular shit is hard as well but I never really wanna limit my references. Niggas like MF DOOM, Earl, and MIKE been inspiring and continue to inspire the music I been making to this point. If you look closely, all these cats have a thing in common: they produce and rap. So that's the school I came from. Tota hela anything goes with me. I'm a big house music fan as well so I'd say that inspires my shit too.+
What inspired your recent mixtape?
Life has a funny way of showing you who the boss is. I guess I was just going through that shit and decided to document it. Like I said I see it as billy would say, Truth Rap, so for me it was an easy thing to write the records. The hard part was outgrowing the tracks. It's like you can't get that first feeling on a track you've been working on for 2 years so it took me a while to get it done but all in all it was a good experience man. I went through some stuff and if you listen to the music you'll hear it. Everything is on the music.
How was the process of creating it?
Man, it was like any project to be honest. It's like you develop a new love for creating and you're almost always excited for the first few months. But then it becomes routine and it gets mixed up with other bad routines in your life prompting you to try to escape or change that. I ain't gonna lie that shit got me off course for a good while. Just focused on living my life. Writer's block became a hassle at a point and I was nearly like 'F this' but you know, that's how it be. I really had fun man but truthfully I've been over that project for a good while.
Tumblr media
Vocal layering seems to be a common aspect in a handful of your tracks..would you consider that a part of your signature sound?
Yeah definitely. I used to make tracks without adlibs and backings cause I had a different perspective on what music should sound like. But you know, with time, you grow and learn and I just decided to incorporate all that into the records. I really love music with good backings and adlibs, not even just rap, so it was more of an 'I'm making the shit I like to hear' type of vibe. That's just how I move with my music. I know what I want in terms of the sonic direction, so I just do it myself. Even with the latest project where that kinda thing is prominent, I knew how I wanted it to sound like 2 years ago. I just had to practice and implement that knowledge.
Is there anything you're doing apart from rapping?
Yeah, I'm a student currently about to get my bag, soon. I do a little music journalism for my school magazine focusing on music, but besides school, I have a couple of business ventures I plan to implement, especially this year. I'm a business dude at heart, even though I never studied it. I've always loved the fact that you could make money from your own ideas on your own terms, so I won't dwell too much on that but yeah. I also recently started officially heading a little label imprint called 4EVAFADED, which comprises the people responsible for the success of my tape and my music in general, my niggas idyllicsoul and Rxssi on production, as well as fellow rapper NovSon who's a young MC trynna make moves as well. I'm what you call a Renaissance man in a way, I just have a little trouble with laying out all the pieces because it gets messy.
Any local acts that you find exciting?
There's tons; I wouldn't even know where to start. My favorite rappers right now would have to be Nikky Dymondz, banzai, Jesonyana, Chrysus, OneTake 267, and my boy NovSon just to name a few. In terms of singers and vocalists, I have been messing with that Magadi single (Backseat Headrush), Sebaga got some really cool-sounding projects, Fourteen'O'Six is hard af, Courtney got that one track, and how could I forget spacerover and Chubbs (Lucas Chubbs). Oh I fuck with Pablo and Xortic as well. Them niggas is crazy like I won't even say much, but I'm sure I'll be able to experience most of these artists because I was privy to meeting some more amazing acts last year. So maybe my list will change in a few. I just had to give you a few because I can't really think of some right now, but I'm a huge fan of local shit. It really is my bread and butter.
Tumblr media
Any thoughts on where the music game is going?
I really think everyone is getting to do anything they want especially sound-wise. I feel like we're not confined to doing what pleases labels or whatever so it's more of a whole group of niggas just making music they really mess with not because they have to make that stuff. So I think you know, with that kind of freedom, the landscape changes over time. I also love the fact that dudes like Saigo (saigotheeditor) have been able to do the photography stuff and shows to basically accompany the music, practically building aesthetics for the sonics, so a big shout to my guy Lerroy, that's my guy.
Do you have anything you're working on right now?
Yeah most definitely, but the stuff I'm making right now I wonder if they gon' like it, because it's some weird shit man. That's all i'm going to say for now. Oh! and I did a couple of features that I hope will be out this year with some amazing artists. Sometimes I don't even believe I did that but you know, I did.
Speaking of features, you are featured on 'The World Is Yours' by Nov Son, how was the experience of working on your first collaboration?
It was really cool. One of the easiest and laid back collabs I did. He hit me up and was like 'We need to get in the studio' and I was down fr. My nigga Idyllic was working with him as well, so it just made things easier but yeah he was recording some songs from his upcoming album and we knocked a couple out the park. Watch out for that project btw. That was also when I met my nigga Rxssi; they was moving as a unit back then so I just decided to mess with them and what they did because normally I just keep to myself and do shit on my own or with like 1 or 2 of the homies. It's a very personal thing for me. People probably think I hate collabs or something, but they're so hard to get done because of the different mindframes, schedules, and shit but I always try to make sure I work with other artists because I believe we work better together.

Haven't done a new vinyl round-up for a while and i've bought loads of new stuff lately. Some new, some used, some good and some fucking awful...
Tumblr media
Start with something good... this was just a random EP I found in a bargain bin in Psychotron. It says Jungle Vibes 2 on the back but all the rest is in french, so I got the man to play the opening bars of the first track and thought, yes, having this for seven quid!
Never heard of any of the acts on there, but French drum & bass from 1995, a time when they were also making some quality hip hop (Solar, Cam, etc.) had to be worth a go and it most definitely was. Quite liquid in it's sound on the first side and a bit more jungle on the second, and quality breaks all the way through. A really good find!
Selector presents Jungle Vibes 2
Tumblr media
I mean, there's not much to say about this is there? It's the London Philharmonic, playing music from the original Star Wars and lets be fair, you all know what that is going to sound like.
Second side has some other orchestral space stuff on, like 2001 and some other random space themes. But the opening track is full of sample friendly cuts from the opening speech to the cascading effects - perfect for scratching.
Now if i could only scratch....
Star Wars by The London Philharmonic Orchestra
Tumblr media
This was another punt that almost fully pays off. Not totally, but it's got some good beats on it...
I know if Swindle as a grime MC, which has never been my thing. As much as a i love hip hop, as i get older, i find i don't really like much past the 90's. But they play Swindle on BBC6Music a bit and he has moved from that dirty, grime sound in to a bit more jazz based stuff and looking at the artwork on the cover and the guests, i figured it might be a bit more jazzy. And to be fair, it is. Quite heavy horns riffs stabs and breaks, people like Kojey Radical, Loyle Carner, and Greentea Peng, Poppy Adjuda, Ghetts on vocals and it's actually OK. Very UK hip-hop jazz type of ting! (as the cool kids probably don't say anymore) There's a couple on there that i already knew and have dropped in a mix before, so I was chuffed that they were there. Plus it's on clear blue vinyl, so yeah, happy with this. Especially as it was only £6.
The New World by Swindle
Tumblr media
Just the original on one side, which on its own is quality. But then on the other is the full Seven Minutes of Madness Mix by Coldcut which is just a fucking banger and put Coldcut and Ninja Tune on the map.
Paid In Full by Eric B & Rakim
Tumblr media
I'm not normally a massive fan of live albums. They're often not the greatest of recordings and the live crowd puts me off. But I had a chat with the man about this and figured that Gong should really be heard live as they are that sort of band, so i gave it a go. To be honest, you can hardly tell it's recorded live, but you can almost smell the cheap weed, patchouli oil and stinky hippies through the record - which is a compliment, as i wish i was there with them. Free loving, getting high and prog grooving to the sound of Gong in a field in the seventies.... I mean, how much fun does that sound?!
Live at Sheffield 1974 by Gong
Tumblr media
So i got chatting to a guy a few months back who turned up for the vinyl night at my local. He was the same age as me, had loads of 90's metal and grunge band logos tattooed down his arm and he started telling me about his son, Lewis Watkiss, who had been accidently killed at the local snowdome as he wasn't wearing a helmet. And i'm like yeah, man, i feel it. I've been through similar shit and we're not supposed to outlive our kids and we had a pint to the memory of our boys. But to make something positive out the conversation, he tells me that Lewis was a gifted saxophonist and that his teacher and one of his heroes, Xhosa Cole, had made a track for him and it was being sold for charity. And i couldn't say no, even if i wanted to. They needed to presell a certain number to get it pressed and i bought it without even hearing it. And it's actually really good. Not my normal sort of jazz, as i'm not a big sax man, but it was his and that's what matters. Its broken it to three suites and each of them build nicely. The second side has a deep house remix from a local girl and this was one of the best £15 i have spent on a record.
Louis' Teenage Spirit by LJW Music Fusion
Tumblr media
This came on the radio a couple of days prior and i remember wondering if i had it on CD, as i used to do some work for Ninja Tune and used to get all the singles and a fair few of the albums sent to me for a couple of years. I never ended up looking for it but I did randomly find it in the bargain bin and figured i'd pick it up.
Just a 12" single, but it's jazzy, soulful a bit Nuyorican and yeah, quality.
Horizon by the Cinematic Orchestra feat. Niara Scarlett
Tumblr media
I first got in to Tom Waits about fifteen years ago and specifically, the three early 80's albums that almost make up a loose trilogy around a guy called Frank who joins the navy, sails around the world, comes home, tries to settle down, can't handle it and fucks off again. That's the simple version of what is a collection of sea shanties, drunken laments, spoken word, free jazz, heartfelt ballads and musical story telling of the finest order. And if you know it already, then i don't need to explain anymore.
I've been looking for them on vinyl for years, but no fucker is selling them. So when i got the email from Rough Trade saying they were being re-pressed, i put my order in and got all three on the day of release!
Swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits
Tumblr media
Yeah, hoped this was going to be good, but it's not. It's shit. Meh, them's the breaks.
Public Pressure by The Yellow Magic Orchestra
Tumblr media
This was ok. Kinda reminded me of the time i was in Paris with the wife and a friend of ours. We had gone to see Bjork in concert and the night before, we went out for dinner in this little side street bistro, about six foot across, all wood panels and probably about 10 covers at the most, split in two by a mezzanine floor. One chef in the tiny back kitchen, a little chinese girl serving, and a lothario of a maitre D who spent most of the night chatting to us on our table, flirting with my mate and stealing his cigarettes. We had steak with foie gras (yeah, i know, but i had to try it), a plate of frogs legs, some goats cheese thing and were introduced to chilled red wine, which considering how hot it was that evening, went down a storm. But the reason this record reminds of that night is because taking up half the floor space on the ground floor were two guys, huddled together in a corner, one on an upright piano and the other on a double bass, playing easy, simple jazz. Nothing too complex, just easy going piano and bass stuff. And that is very much what this is.
I can almost taste that chilled beaujolais and Benson golds...

The Legacy Of J. Dilla Streaming On FX & Unheard Music Released Via Kano
youtube
The Legacy of J. Dilla is making its debut on the FX network tonight. The New York Times documentary about the late hip-hop producer explores Dilla's ingenuity as a beatmaker, the history of his Conant Gardens neighborhood and the various conflicts over his estate. Dilla died in 2006 at age 32 after battling a rare blood disease. At the time he was a budding underground legend having worked with Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, D'Angelo and Common. He also founded his own group Slum Village and used his beats to elevate several local rappers from Detroit including Phat Kat, Frank-N-Dank and others.  The producer's career took a different turn after R&B veteran Amp Fiddler introduced him to Q-Tip after a fated interaction during a Lollapalooza tour. Since his passing, he's been talked about heavily among rap connoisseurs, beat junkies and producers. The general public is still unaware of his contributions and the documentary is a way to commemorate his work and introduce him to those who still don't connect the sounds to his name. DJ Jazzy Jeff is in the film deconstructing Dilla's methodology that still mystifies the most initiated beatsmiths to this day.
The James Yancy estate has made a deal with Kano, the company responsible for the STEM player to release unheard music from Dilla over the next 10 years. The 20 songs are being released alongside the film. Fans can listen to the music on the STEM player which allows the songs to be remixed and the mixes can be shared online. The STEM player costs $200 and a monthly subscription is $1.94. The Legacy of J. Dilla will debut on FX and can be watched later on Hulu.

OutKast - Stankonia
This is OutKast at their most stylistically varied. At times they hit the G-funk so hard that they sound almost exactly like P-funk, and at others they are experimenting with drum and bass instrumentals, and yet other tracks see them integrating guitar riffs. OutKast, and Andre 3000 in particular, are always balancing creativity with corniness and Stankonia has the best balance. Plus the hooks are unbelievably catchy. You will have Gasoline Dreams, Ms. Jackson, So Fresh So Clean, I'll Call Before I Come, B.O.B., or maybe We Luv Deez Hoez stuck in your head after listening to this album.
Tumblr media
Steely Dan - Aja
This is one of the most meticulously produced albums of all time. You don't even need $1k headphones to hear it. The balance is perfect, every instrument in its right place, crisp and clear. The vocals rise to the top but never overtake the piano or horns, the drums are crisp and punchy yet never overtake the mix. Even if the music sucked ass I would still praise the production. Thankfully the music is also teally good. Steely Dan have perfected their crisp and sleazy brand of lightly funky jazz rock. In typical Steely Dan fashion the songs can mostly be described as 'about some guy or girl'. There's one weird caveat that has nothing to do with Steely Dan but the song Peg is ruined for me because, as big of a Steely Dan fan as I am, I'm an even bigger De La Soul fan so Peg is forever the sample from Eye Know for me. If you don't have the same brain worms as me this shouldn't be a problem.
Tumblr media
Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction
I don't hate this album, I actually like it, but I do hate Rolling Stones' attitude towards metal. I can think of like five better metal albums from 1987 that they could shove in here, but no it is only the shit that's most palatable to dadrock audiences. Napalm Death - Scum, Laibach - Opus Dei, Mayhem - Deathcrush, Anthrax - Among The Living, Death - Scream Bloody Gore, King Diamond - Abigail. There that's six, none of them sound at all similar and they are all better than Appetite For Destruction. Sure I could do a real review for this album, but why? What could I say that hasn't been said? That Slash only jas one guitar solo in him that he reuses every song? Old news. That their whole aesthetic is corny as fuck(derogatory)? That their whole aesthetic is corny as fuck(affectionate)? Nothing I say here matters. I do like Nightrain tho. That song kinda goes.
Tumblr media
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full
The dynamic duo of 80s hip hop. Rakim was one of the best rappers of the 80s and Eric B. serves as a reminder that hip hop is more than just rapping. In fact Eric B.'s turntablism skills are more often the centerpiece than the rapping such as in Eric B. Is President or the instrumental tracks Eric B. Is On The Cut, Chinese Arithmetic, and Extended Beat. Although Rakim is no slouch and his dedication to internal rhyme schemes influenced a generation of lyrical miracles who would crash and burn trying to live up to Rakim's skill level.
Tumblr media
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
Astral Weeks is jazz pop with folk rock sensibilities. It features lengthy songs with a jazz band backing, but a lot of the instrumentals are also very folk influenced and the production feels more pastoral than jazzy. It's a hazy dreamlike mix of sounds that is fun and delightful to listen to, although I'm a little surprised at how high on the list it is. I'm confused and concerned that we have gotten two Van Morrison albums and zero Tim Buckley's.
Tumblr media
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
Throughout the 60s Stevie Wonder went from child prodigy to teen hit machine and when the 70s began is when he finally entered his 'classic era'. Talking Book was his 15th record but it spawned the biggest hit of his career, Superstition. Talking Book also sees Stevie Wonder evolving as a lyricist. You Are The Sunshine Of My Life expresses a very pure, innocent love that sits a bit outside of how Motown love songs were usually written and Big Brother is the start of Wonder's blunt, serious political songs with upbeat melodies. A landmark album in the funk and soul scene and the start of an era where no one else was allowed to win Grammys
Tumblr media
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
Oh here come the very cool tough hard rock boys singing about Tolkein again. Fucking nerds. What is that a mandolin? Lol. This album is so fucking good.
Tumblr media
The Band - s/t
Oof, I'm conflicted. On one hand this is an amazing album, on the other it isn't better than Music From The Big Pink. The Band nail a sense of Americana here, especially on The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Up On Cripple Creek, but where Big Pink is a fantastic whole album this one is just a very good collection of songs. Swap their places and I have no complaints.
Tumblr media
Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville
You have no idea how happy I am to see this album here, let alone at such a high place on the list. Exile In Guyville is one of the most perfect pieces of lo fi indie rock ever made. Liz Phair hits a unique place between the grunge and indie scenes without ever feeling like she's trying for anything other than sincerity. The sparse instrumentation makes it so every note is important and every emotion is laid bare. The rawness of emotion is essential when she's navigating the nuance of different kinds of disappointed and dispassionate. Liz Phair comes off as deeply cynical about men, but also very horny. I respect that. She roasts handsome confident men and then sings longingly about pathetic weirdos. I really couldn't relate more. This album above all others really makes me feel like I could, should make an album myself. The raw production, the simple short songs, the simple but honest lyrics. Exile In Guyville is one of the greatest indie albums of all time.

(61-75 albums etc that I’ve listened to this year, copied from twitter) (now with art. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6])
names and thoughts below cut
61/ PROGedia - Diõscuri (2023) holy shit what is this. prog hip hop? 6???? insane bangers out the gate why is this from R&S? feels like brainfeeder 💯 massive.
---
62/ Sampling Masters - Never Float (2001) this sounds a bit ahead of its time. its not just me right? does this sound like 2001 to you? 2005 maybe… this is a good thing btw
---
63/ VA - D3: Diverse Style from "B" 3rd style Normal (2001) this feels a little dated and amateurish (affectionate) it's a complete mixed bag in style and quality but an all around lovely time. "R4" maybe fav song? there's a lot of good here…
---
64/ VA - D3: Diverse Style from "B" 3rd style Versus (2001) kinda the same story as the "normal" version. maybe a bit weaker overall. the last two tracks are a really strong closer
---
65/ Autechre - AE_LIVE (2016) weird case im not rly including this thoroughly but i found fanmade CUEs and titles for the AE_LIVE releases. so obv i gotta split and organize them. relisten a bit… not to all of it. its cool to have "names" to my favs! (drunk), ceramic, c7b2 slip…
also my least favorite: (rave) get EQ'd gdi
---
66/ Autechre - AE_LIVE 2016/2018 (2020) weird case #2. turns out the newer sets are dif material. fewer beats. it is. RLY GOOD. again with the CUEs and fan IDs, some fav tracks: (flash) holty shit reflected ;_; (cyclone) (2016 ver)!!!!!! "(cosmos) - flute" i could swim in this
---
67/ Herbie Hancock - Future 2 Future (2001) i still have Herbie Hancock associated with like. the old jazz greats. a constellation fixed in the sky. so its wild to me to hear his explorations afterward. smokey jazzy sound sprinkled over breaks and even some bleepy styles. chill.
---
68/ VA - D4: Diverse Style from "B" 4th style (2001) wild variation. putting the diverse in Diverse Style i suppose. im just gonna list some standouts: "Funky Modelling [ATM Remix]" hypnotic! "WOW WOW 220" jf adventure! "manmachine plays jazz [ex.MIX]" classic beat!
---
69/ Initial Y - Dance X 2002 (2001) oh, cheese. i probably shouldve seen that coming based on the artist name. overall not a fan, but also… lol track 6. "Last Regrets -Winter Night Mix-" and (especially) the hidden track are the only ones that truly vibe with me
---
70/ VA - side-c (2001) yeah its another wild ride of genres. im having a good time! standouts: "Believe~Flirtation" sexy garage! "RG14" fun!!! "terrolist_egoist" hits a nostalgic spot "ヒッポカンパス" l u s h, ahead of its time even "雲海に棲む鳥" grasslands rpg vibes!
---
71/ Casiopea - Main Gate (2001) no words just jams
---
72/ Holly Waxwing - The New Pastoral (2023) beautiful and elegant. i feel like i need to study this to learn restraint and intent in design.
---
73/ 4 Hero - Creating Patterns (2001) (i have decided to be extra harsh on dnb albums.) …oh the dnb is stripped back. a sexy jazz fills the space. im still picky about vocals but some of them feel right to me. not quite Groove Aramda but ya. "Eight" is my fav here i think lol
---
74/ VA - Metalheadz Platinum Breakz 03 (2001) (i have decided to be extra harsh on dnb albums.) VA here means Various Alignments with my taste. im far more into the jungle jazzish portions than the darkstep(?). overall: ok. (this is me being harsh)
---
75/ The Railway Raver - You'll Never Get Anywhere By Spending All Day Playing Around With That Bloody Drum Machine (2001) i love railay raver's ear for sound design. id say "gentle synth feel" but this deviates from that a bit. acid tho.

Listen/purchase: Through The Night by Blue Thyme
Wanted to share a personal favorite for #quixotic jazz. That trombone with the slower beat and distortion just makes me feel things-- it's perfection.
"Blue Thyme started out as two piece, with Hip Hop beatmaker DasNichts, and Jazz/Soul singer Julie Karmark mixing their influences into a blend of jazzy songs and soulful Hip Hop beats." (From Bandcamp; support Blue Thyme and check out the full album here)

Here we go! Started up another French electronic music showcase of sorts and this week we’ve got a variety of dope trip hop grooves that end up clocking in at a little under an hour. Things kick off with back-to-back-to-back offerings from the great, fat-blunt-hip hop-minded DJ Cam, and then we splinter off into a little synthiness, a little bluesiness, a little jazziness, and a little post-electroness.
Only one of these artists ever really managed to transcend the underground, I think, and that was France’s dance music clown prince, Mr. Oizo, whose “Flat Beat” was an immense electro-house hit throughout Europe back in ‘99-’00. However, I went with his less known distorted bassline jam, “Sick Dog Try to Speak,” here.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible:
DJ Cam - “Mad Blunted Jazz” DJ Cam - “Gangsta Shit DJ Cam - “Life” Shazz - “Le Marais” Chaotik Ramses - “No Way Out” Bang Bang - “Bye Bye Blues” Mr. Oizo - “Sick Dog Try to Speak” Elegia - “Way Form 3 (If You Ever)” Alexkid - “U’s Song (Early Mix)” Scan X - “Infinity”
This playlist is also on YouTube and YouTube Music, with a couple more songs that aren’t on Spotify, including yet another DJ Cam joint:
DJ Cam - “Pure Pleasure” Louise Vertigo - “Ou Est La Femme”
But wait, there’s more! Want French trip hop playlists, but from a more specific region or city? Well, I’ve started making those too…

More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

Bought a load of new records the other day but unfortunately haven't really had chance to go through them properly yet. But one that I have played is this: picked up specifically for the classic 900 Number track, which is the first one on there. I remember hearing it on Pete Tong's Essential Mix in the 90s and it stuck out because it was the only time I'd heard a funky hip-hop break ttack on what was a dance music show.
So i put it on and that Marva Whitney sax riff from Unwind Yourself kicks in, that heavy break bangs over the top, and then some dodgy 80's rap comes in. Don't remember that bit... but I persevere, the rap is only a few bars and then that break just carries on and all is right with the world again...
And that sets the tone for most of the first side: heavy break, dodgy 80s rap, then it rolls on for a bit instrumentally.
The second side is just pure breaks though. And there's some crackers in there. Jazzy, breaky, funky, heavy as fuck battle breaks that a dj better than me could use to much better effect!
Makes me want to get my lino out and practise my worm... no, that's not a euphemism!

ALBUM REVIEW TIME 👹
Today we are reviewing one of my fave kpop group’s new album MAXIDENT by Stray Kids with the title track Case 143
Tumblr media
I just wanna say how I’m so proud of these dudes, they write and produce their own music and their skills get stronger with every release 🫶🏻 anyway on to the review
Case 143 - 7/10 - it’s definitely interesting. I was worried i wasn’t gonna like it all that much based on the snippet on tik tok but it’s much better within the context of the whole song. This song does what they set up in the previous release Maniac and improves upon it. Although the first section of the chorus is jarring, its a huge ear worm and im addicted to it. If Stray Kids were going to do a love song this is exactly how i expected them to do it 😭 (also give the music video a watch you won’t regret it, it’s quite funny, felix gets slapped by a cooked chicken 😀)
Chill - 8/10 - a song written and composed by our Hannie!! His songs are always so nice!! This is a cool jazzy style r&b song. It takes some similarities from lofi music too and some classic hip hop beats and overall its so good. Han’s solo written and composed songs have only improved since debut and i love it so much!!
Give me your TMI - 9/10 - This one is for all my living tombstone fans and fnaf fans!! The crunchy instrumental is everything and the drop into the chorus is so interesting. Also when Changbin starts the song with a strong rap that seems like complete nonsense, you know the songs gonna hit!! But yeah keeping up with hip hop sounds, the incorporate crunchy edm and alternative rock style sounds too and it just makes this song so funky I love it!!
SUPER BOARD - 6/10 - where do i start with this song… the intro itches my brain so hard. The “nada da shooom super board” gets stuck in your head so badly 😭 the song leans into a more rock style but instead of an electric guitar riff, you get these synth sounds and it adds that retro flare to the song. Although the repetition of nada da shoom super board can get a bit annoying and lessens the replay-ability of the song for me
3RACHA (Bangchan, Changbin, Han) - 5/10 - this is well and truly a Drill song. Like this is something straight out of the streets of south london. The raps of our producing unit are satisfying to my ears however this style of music just isn’t my personal taste and i don’t think i would listen to it often. Not a bad song tho ✨also ik chan is australian but im claiming changbin and han as honorary brits for this song
TASTE (Hyunjin, Felix, Lee Know) - 8.5/10 - when Hyunjin described this song as a cold version of red lights he wasn’t wrong. They need to keep this man in the studio his brain is amazing. 4th member of 3racha?? Perhaps. Whenever you put Danceracha (this unit) in the studio expect a hoe anthem honestly. I’m very proud of how Hyunjin and Felix’s vocals have improved. Lee Know really gets to use his more powerful vocals and that makes me so happy!! Also the drop in this song is insane. Listening to it isn’t enough i need it shot into my veins 😭
Can’t Stop (Seungmin, I.N) - 7/10 - my vocalracha 🫶🏻 this is a pop rock style song. They worked with one of day6’s producers for this track which you can tell!! But it suits them so much!! Seungmin and innie’s voices are so lovely the drums and guitars are so strong. You will absolutely catch me dancing about to this song 😭 however i will say that the mixing between the vocals and the instrumental feels a bit off. Idk how to explain it. Also they cut off Seungmin’s high note, gonna sob.
Circus (Korean version) - 8/10 - This was the title track for their lastest Japanese mini album so i’ve heard if before. Its a bop. But I will say i think the korean version flows a lot better between the english lines and the korean ones. Where as the Japanese version felt a little too sharp?? But yeah Circus would slay is every language if we’re honest
Anyways, Maxident Album of the year. Also is you ever wanna talk to me about Stray Kids pls send me an ask, I love these dudes so much 😭🫶🏻
