A long time ago... I sent the talented http://jenquest.tumblr.com/ an Olympus XA2 with A11 Flash. In return he sent me some of his beautiful photographs, which captured some incredibly poignant moments. I was meant to document these properly - making a photographic note on my phone (as above).
Instead of trying to show these photographs - I would recommend going to see his Tumblr feed instead!

REVIEW | "Arcadia Fallen" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
Supporting a crowdfunded video game is always a gamble. For every Undertale and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, there are dozens of flops like Mighty Number 9 and Godus. Too many campaigns overpromise, underdeliver, or collapse before getting off the ground - even those made with the best intentions at heart. Making a video game is hard, and not everyone is cut out for it.
Thankfully, Arcadia Fallen defies expectations; despite being the debut project of an untested indie studio fully funded by Kickstarter, it delivers on all its promises with a polished package that’s set to satisfy both its backers and the general gaming public - even if its current pricing is a little steep compared to its contemporaries in the genre.
Galdra Studios, a three person development team operating out of Denmark, pitched Arcadia Fallen as a “visual novel roleplaying experience that combines gorgeous Japanese-inspired anime aesthetics with enchanting Scandinavian storytelling” during their Kickstarter campaign back in July of 2020. Anticipation for its release grew as it secured a cast of accomplished English voice actors, teased inclusive dating sim elements, and promised a branching-path narrative where your choices mattered. I’ve been following its development this past year, and downloaded it immediately upon release, eager to see if the team managed to pull off something great - and they did! In fact, my biggest gripe with the game is that I wish there was more of it.
Tumblr media
Arcadia Fallen quite literally left me wanting for more. Just as its story began to pick up steam, it ended, leaving me a bit sad and frustrated - but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. What, exactly, is the game about?
Players control Morgan, an alchemist's apprentice of vague young age and experience, in the sleepy town of Anemone Valley. After a particularly trying day of work, they stumble across a strange girl being attacked in a dark alley, and step in to help… only to get fatally stabbed for their troubles. Thankfully, the girl they saved is actually a friendly nature spirit, and brings them back from the dead - with a few unfortunate side effects. Now illegally bound to the spirit in a world that fears magic, Morgan needs to find a way to separate them, but uncovers more than they bargained for when their search for a solution uncovers a sprawling conspiracy right beneath their feet.
Their journey for answers leads them to form a ragtag group of interested parties all conveniently in town - the spirit, Mime, her handler and government soldier, Veronica, a traveling scholar, Ann, a vagabond “illegal” magic user, Michael, and a strange outlander from deep in the far-off mountains, Kaidan. Together, they investigate a sudden rash of demon attacks on the townspeople connected to Morgan’s assault, in a series of small, interconnected adventures I found reminiscent of low-level D&D modules. There are stakeouts, heists, ancient treasures to be found, and sealed-away evils to be destroyed.

Tuesday Plugs No. 005 - jenquest
This week, I'll be featuring for the first time a British photographer, anonymously known as Jenquest.  I know when I started this, I intended on focusing on photographers who don't have big followings, but Jenq is of the many that deserve the extra recognition in spite of having a large following.  Last week's feature on Ruzz would be another example of this. Jenquest may be based in London, but many of my favourites of his actually come from Saudi Arabia, namely Mecca.  His beautiful street photos from inside the iconic pilgrimage site show us a glimpse into a world we rarely see in the West.  Mecca, for those unfamiliar, is often off limits to us Westerners. That being said, his work in the UK and Continental Europe are also fantastic.  Jenquest routinely shows the ordinary life on the British high street in great quantity and quality. His works from London, Barcelona, and Paris contrast starkly from his photos of Saudi Arabia.  It shows the clash of the West and the East.  One photo may see Muslims in traditional attire while the next may show a vibrantly modern world in the West.  Business suits next to hijabs.  On top of all this, Jenquest is a nice person who always shares his gratitude for others work. What more could you ask for?  Check out Jenquest, if you haven't already, right here.
------
Next week, there won't be a Tuesday Plug.  I need to take a break to maintain focus, so I invite you guys to look at today's plug and the other previous plugs I've done in case you missed 'em:

REVIEW | "Skip and Loafer" - Vol. 1 | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
The word “wholesome” gets thrown around a lot these days, but I can’t think of a better way to describe Misaki Takamatsu’s Skip and Loafer.
Three years following its initial serialization in Japan, the critically acclaimed romantic comedy series has finally made its way to English audiences courtesy of Seven Seas Entertainment, and I couldn’t be happier. Unlike many of its contemporaries in the genre, Skip and Loafer forgoes over-the-top characters and wacky slapstick. Instead, its a grounded coming of age story more interested in situational humor and realistic slice of life drama - the perfect thing to cozy up with this Fall.
Readers follow Mitsumi, an earnest yet awkward country girl leaving home to start high school in Tokyo. She has her whole life planned out: everything from joining the student council, to graduating top of her class, working comfortably for the government into her middle age, and retiring peacefully sometime in her sixties - all predicated on making the perfect first impression during her open ceremonies speech.
Too bad she gets lost and misses her train.
Tumblr media
Enter: Shima Sousuke, her complete opposite.
Laidback, handsome, and a natural extrovert, he’s running late, too - and far less concerned about it than Mitsumi. Still, the two hit it off from the word go - and manage to make it to school together just before they’re missed. Their strange connection surprises their classmates, but Souske’s charms turn out to be just what Mitsumi needs to bridge the social gap between her and her new peers.
What follows are the daily misadventures of the unlikely duo as they forge new friendships and navigate the often rocky, sometimes hilarious, and occasionally touching trials of high school life.
Skip and Loafer is a low stakes story, but by no means is it boring one. Its characters elevate otherwise mundane situations into engaging scenes due entirely to their chemistry with one another, and their nuanced personalities. When you boil it down, the entire volume is just teenagers hanging out (seeing a movie, singing karaoke, having lunch together) - but the characters are so well-written that’s all it needs to be. Couple that with Takamatsu’s simple yet expressive art style, and you know you have something special in your hands.

REVIEW | "Corpse Party (2021)" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
Ever since the Switch replaced my main means of handheld gaming back in 2017, I’ve been asking: “When’s Corpse Party coming out on this thing?” Having already released on the PSP, PS Vita, and 3DS (yes really), I knew it was only a matter of time until the horror classic graced Nintendo’s hybrid console.
It seemed inevitable, given the sudden appearance of the Corpse Party: Blood Drive on the eShop around October of 2019. It being the final installment in the series main trilogy, I expected the first (Corpse Party) and second titles (Corpse Party: Book of Shadows) to follow shortly after. Cut to two years and one pandemic later, and I've finally gotten (half) my wish! Corpse Party (2021) is here at long last courtesy of XSEED Games, and the question on everyone’s mind is: was it worth the wait?
In my humble opinion? Yes. Absolutely.
Returning fans and newcomers alike owe it to themselves to traverse the terrifying halls of Heavenly Host Elementary once more, in this, the most definitive version of the RPG Maker classic - complete with all the bells and whistles that have been added over the years, and more! At a steal of only $20, you can’t beat this game’s bang for your buck. So grab your best pair of headphones and turn down the lights, because this is one worth settling in for.
Tumblr media
For the uninitiated, the story of Corpse Party follows the unfortunate fate of a group of teenagers from Kisaragi Academy: three boys and four girls, their teacher, and a tag-along little sister. On the eve of one of their own’s departure to another school, the group decides to perform a friendship ritual called “Sachiko Ever After.” But something goes wrong; what’s meant to be a harmless bit of fun inexplicably separates and teleports them all to a haunted other dimension!
This otherworldly space takes the form of Heavenly Host, an elementary school that closed down decades before following a rash of serial kidnappings and murders. Now the souls of those victims roam its dilapidated halls, brutally killing all who become trapped within. Your goal as the player is to survive and escape, solving puzzles and running for your life as you piece together the truth behind Heavenly Host’s dark past.
Before getting any more into it, it needs be remarked that Corpse Party is a very mature game; gore, fanservice, and fan(dis)service flow aplenty. Nobody is safe from the horror, and a majority of characters are teens and young children. If that bothers you, then this is not the game for you.
