Thoughts:

Predictably my favorite character was Velma. Even so, I have to admit at the beginning of the story I struggled to sympathize with the protagonists. I didn't understand at all Velma's logic of not having any friends and I didn't get why Daphne thought she couldn't stop being mean, it's no like a coercitive force was making her do or say those cruel things. At first, I worried that I'm starting to forget what it was like to be a teenage girl, but then I realised if I was their age, I probably would've judge them way harder.

That's not to say I didn't feel for them. Velma's percieved obligation to act like a grown up due to her parents neglectfulness and Daphne's hurt by her mother's abandonment were heartbreaking.

Which leads me to my favorite part of the novel: Velma and Daphne's overdue and emotional conversations with their respective mothers. The whole reflection about migration, home, barriers, belonging and identity was great. Likewise, the discussion regarding romantic relationships was insightful and bastly appreciated.

Finally, I would have liked it if Shaggy and Scooby had more significant roles in the journey.

Maybe I will read the next book, but I'm not in a hurry.

I could have chosen ANY (or almost any) books to do my paper on and I settled on Fear of Flying by Erica Jong and Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Gilman is a much better short story writer. I did one of my other grad papers on her short stories.

I thought Jong was one of my favorite writers but after that I don't think so. Her poetry was much better than her novel but also I read her poetry when I was literally manic so I don't trust my old opinion of her. :/

#yes Gilman is the yellow wallpaper author and that is her magnum opus (and her other short stories) NOT Herland #this was just a bad choice all around #I wanted to read both those books pretty badly until I actually read them #so very bad paper topic choice but we roll any way #Jong's book just made me glad to be single because a lot of her male characters were repulsive!!! (barf) #also Isadora annoyed me- GET A GRIP GIRL #fear of flying #herland #I read both these books in December #I'm currently reading about Branwell Bronte (Anne Emily and Charlotte's unfortunate brother) #Daphne Du Maurier did a biography on him #I'm also reading Josephine Tey's Daughter of Time where a police investigator tries to solve the mystery of Richard III #both are wayyyy more interesting to me #I still like to read just not whatever they are trying to force on me at school. this new max trevelyan situation is sooooooooo. it is so. what if you were trapped in amber (stolen away to the circle) and remain a Pure & Good Soul in the eyes of your generation of the family because you weren't involved in the cutthroat succession fight they all had (because, again, you were trapped in the circle dealing with The Situation In There) and when you finally got out like half your cousins were dead and the other half were a little bit too devoted to the idea that a piece of their childhood remains Untainted in you so you kind of fell into this peacemaker role but right as you finally got everyone talking to each other again you became the center of a religious movement that clearly does not have your best interests at heart. so now those same cousins are sat around a table in a secret basement somewhere trying to decide if they can kidnap you out of it. like on one hand: bonding experience successful! on the other hand if you don't fold them into the inquisition somehow they will be crushed under the boot of it.

#all of these trevelyan cousins are willing to cause a LOT of problems in the haven era #it's a well connected family! what do you mean your trade caravans aren't arriving? how funny! #until max is like cousin varn cousin matthias cousin daphne. please stop cutting our supply lines. #it's very like 'he's supposed to be OUR ray of sunshine. don't fucking look at him.' which. they're a bit insane about it. #i don't have a tag for him yet but i DO know multiple people in the inquisition have decided his family is Too Big A Risk #the war table missions surrounding them are INSANE until they succeed in getting cousin althea placed in haven to spy directly #althea trevelyan in haven: wow this is insane. i respect literally none of you people. except for josephine. #josephine can ask me about a trade dispute in nevarra over tea and i'll tell her everything she wants to know #max 'helen of troy' trevelyan
