In Death Note, you know the part where the L placed spy cams everywhere within Yagami’s house?
What if Light and his girlfriend start doing the deeds to look like normal hormones teens?
YES OMG i’ve actually thought of this before so i’m so glad someone requested it LMFAO
> warnings: swearing, smut, degradation, sir kink, kind of exhibition??
Light tossed his backpack onto his bed, loosening his red tie before collapsing onto the bed himself, letting his exhaustion express itself in the most natural way he thought possible. It’s hard to act natural when you’re being watched; you almost forget every aspect of your daily routine, putting excessive thought into typically mindless tasks like walking around your house or laying on your bed to the point of obviousness.
“Light, wanna play video games?” Ryuk asked, standing before the boy.
Light fell back onto his bed, placing his hands behind his shoulders with a deep sigh. Closing his eyes, he prepared for the performance he’d have to put on. How could he ignore Ryuk without giving off reactions to the shinigami’s words, tilts of the head or instinctive hums of agreement that could incriminate himself in a matter of seconds.
“You listening? Hello?”
Light only ignored him, grabbing a long beige coat from the closet before heading outside, Ryuk following close behind.
“Hey, Light, what’s with the brushing off? I’m starting to get annoyed.”
He popped his collar and rolled up his sleeves, checking meticulously for any bits of wire or chips of plastic that could be audio bugging him.
“Light! Hey!” Ryuk wined.
“There might be secret hidden cameras around the house,” The brunette broke the silence, his voice in a slightly raspy lowered tone, almost a whisper, “Or microphones, probably both.” He explained, going on to detail his clever methods of finding out if someone had been in his room- or if someone had opened his door, at least.
“Let’s go on a camera hunt! You got a plan after that?” Ryuk asks.
“Simple, make it seem like I have no idea the cameras are even there, and that I’m just a normal teenager. I’ll probably need some excuse for why I have that paper and lead in my door, they’ll want to know why I don’t want anyone in my room, what I’m hiding, and if the footage reveals I’m hiding absolutely nothing, that’ll look even more suspicious. Every teenager has secrets.”
“So what’ll you do?”
“You’ll see.”
                               _______________________________
“This feels objectifying, Yagami.”
You walk down the street leading to your boyfriend’s house, accompanied by the man himself as he explains his, quite frankly, pervy plan.
“Objectifying? We have sex all the time, Y/N.”
“Yeah, but nobody plans out when they’re gonna fuck. It’s just weird.”
“Hey,” Light stops walking, facing towards you as he gently lifts your chin with his thumb and index finger. The feeling made you melt, and he knew that very well. The way Light held your face and looked at you like you were the only thing on earth felt exhilarating, he could tell you anything in that position and you’d believe it. And that’s just what he does, constantly. “This is not an option, this isn’t personal business. This is about Kira. This is going to throw suspicion off me, okay? Do it. For me.”
You sighed deeply. He had you the moment he held your chin like that. “And there won’t be any explicit footage of us? There won’t be a camera like, right there?”
“I don’t know where all the cameras are, but there aren’t many like that in my room at all, we’ll be safe.” He lied, a practice that came so easily to him he no longer viewed it as morally wrong. It was just something he did, like going to school and eating dinner or doing homework, he also lied.
“Okay.” You agreed with a smile, prompting him to release his grasp on you and continue the walk home.
“I didn’t realize he went through such great lengths...might there be something in his room that he doesn’t want anyone to see?” Soichiro Yagami remarked, watching Light fiddle with the thin strip of paper in the doorway and the piece of lead in the hinges as you stood patiently behind him.
“Well, considering he’s 17, it isn’t all that unusual. I’ve done it myself, for no reason at all.” L responds, “I am a bit curious, though, as to what he’s hiding so admently.”
You enter Light’s bedroom with him, shutting the door behind you as you watch him toss his bag down besides his bed.
“Y/N, are you scared of me?” He turns to face you.
“Hm? Why would I be.”
“L, the best detective in the world, thinks I’m Kira when I’m not.”
Oh, Light.
“He makes me out to be some kind of monster,” He continues, “I’m worried you’ll start to believe him.”
“I’m not scared.”
“Maybe you should be.”
“Huh?”
Before you could register his comment, Light lunges for you, tossing you onto his bed before tickling your stomach and sides.
‘L-Light! St-stop! Please!” You cried between giggles.
“Make me.”
Understanding, you connect your lips to his, causing his hands to rub up and down where he previously tickled you. You moaned into the kiss as Light pushed harder into it, his desperation showing. You wished he would take his time, but you knew the real reason you were here. His hands slid down to your lower half, pushing his hand inside your pants and rubbing your clit through your panties. You gasped, hand reaching up to grab his wrist reflexively. He let out a chuckle.
Impatiently, he stood up straight, unbuttoning your pants before slipping them completely off along with your panties, leaving you in only your t-shirt on his bed.
“I figured,” L sighed, “You can close your eyes if you’d like, Yagami-san, but I’m afraid I need you here for legal purposes.”
Light crouched down onto the floor, lifting your legs to lay bent on his shoulders. Teasingly, he licked a line down your slit, earning a gasp from you. He straightened himself out again, moving towards your face. “L is watching,” He whispered, his hot breath on your ear, “Put on a show.” He smirked.
Watching? Had Light lied?
Light lowered himself back down to push his tongue inside you. His tongue wriggled around, exploring your walls with lust.
“Oh, Light” You moaned, slapping your hand over your mouth to muffle the sound. You knew L, you knew the whole task force for that matter. Your face flushed with embarrassment imagining any of them reviewing this footage and hearing your moans. Hell, Light’s dad worked with L, he could be watching for all you knew.
You jolted at the sudden sting of Light smacking your thigh with an open palm. “Don’t hold back, angel, and don’t cover your mouth. I want to hear all your pretty moans.” He said, removing himself from your core before pressing his lips almost to your ear again, lowering his voice to a whisper, “I want L to see how good I make you feel. Got it?”
You faintly nodded before he returned to your heat, dipping his tongue inside once again while his thumb felt your clit, rubbing it in circles. You knot your fingers through his brown hair, bringing his face closer to your pussy with a moan. He sped up his actions, practically abusing your clit while his tongue hit your g-spot, curling sightly upwords inside of you.
“Fuck, Light, I can’t, I’m gonna...”
With that, Light pulled away, leaving you edged and wanting more. You pouted, sticking your lip out with a whine. Light, having none of it, roughly raked his hand through your hair, forcing you up close to his face by your scalp. “You listen to me.” He growled, the heat of his breath warming your face, “No whining, and no disobeying. Got that?” He yanked your hair with the last syllable for emphasis. You let out a weak “Mhm.”
He shoved you to the bed chest-first by your hair, never letting his fingers leave your locks.
“Ass up.” He commanded, you obliged slowly, legs feeling a bit sore from him eating you out.
Hastily he unbuckled his belt before folding it in half, smacking your ass with it leaving a slight red mark. “When I tell you to do something, you do it quickly.”
“Yes Light.”
You yelped as he smacked you again with the belt in the same place, the stinging leaving your ass feel like it was burning.
“Yes who?” He asked.
“Yes sir.”
“Atta girl.” He pushed his khakis fully down before aligning himself with your entrance, rubbing his head up and down your slit teasingly.
“Sir please...” You begged.
“Please what? Say it.”
“Please, please fuck me sir. I want your cock, please.”
“Well, only since you asked so nicely.” Light slid himself into you with a groan. Slowly, he rocked himself into you.
“F-faster, please sir. Faster.” You moaned, gripping onto the sheets.
Light obliged right away, almost as if he was waiting for you to ask for it. He quicked his speed, pounding into you mercilessly. He licked his lips, relishing in the loud slew of moans and curses spilling from your mouth as he fucked you.
“Look at you, you fucking slut. Begging for me to go faster. You’re so goddamn desperate for my cock, you dirty whore.”
You couldn’t help but moan at his words, though degrading, the fact that Light liked you at all made you feel worth something. Light Yagami, Kira, the god of the new world, liked you. Though you’d never admit it to the stubborn boy, he could say almost anything to you, about you, and you’d still love him.
“Fuck, Y/N, you’re so tight.” He knotted his fingers back into your hair for stability as he thrusted into you even faster, burying himself deep into you.
“Oh my god, fuck, Light- sir, it’s so good.” You cried, feeling your orgasm creeping up once again. “I’m gonna...”
“Do it, come for me angel.” He encouraged, bringing his free hand up to play with your clit. The stimulation sent you over the edge. “Oh fuck, oh my god, fuck you feel so good.” You came loudly, only a little before Light did as well.
L watched Light collapsed beside you on the bed, only the sound of your breathless pants escaping the monitor. “Uh, they’re done, Yagami-san. You can...open your eyes again. Honestly, this security footage may be useless now, at the very least we cannot bring it to court, considering your son and his girlfriend are both 17. Perhaps this was his plan along.”
“You’re saying this makes you more sure he’s Kira?!” Soichiro raised his voice.
“Well, it definitely raises my suspicions.”
Light finally stood up, tucking himself back into his jeans. Before you could pull your bottoms back up, he picked up your panties from the floor, playfully spinning them around his index finger. “You won’t be missing these, will you?” He asks sarcastically, tossing them into the drawer in his bedside table.
“Ah, so that’s what he’s hiding. A valid excuse to not want family in your room but... unexpected, to say the least.” L remarked, still somehow watching the cameras.

I’m so curious about what would have been L’s reaction to Light’s crazy laugh and Kira speech. I mean, we got Near, and I love Near and his reaction—or lack thereof—and the way he swiftly rejects Light’s great ideology and humiliates him by calling him a murderer, just a murderer, period. I find it extremely funny that Near’s “dislikes” in HTR13 are, well, Kira (while L’s are socks!) and the fact they stated Near’s dislike for Kira was stronger than L’s. Near’s got NO patience for Light’s bullshit, lmao.
It might be my shipper side speaking, but I do believe Lawlight was way more personal. L was a person Light actually respected. Light is probably like, “hey, L wouldn’t ignore/dismiss/brush me off!” and Near is like, “well, luv, I don’t give a shit.” Serves Light right!
But I do wonder... It likely would’ve been more dramatic/emotionally charged. And to imagine L watching Light’s desperate pleading/death at Ryuk’s hands...... Despite the fact L loves to win, I don’t think L would take any pleasure in that. I don’t think L would ever, ever forget the Kira case. Or Light. 👀
Aw, yeah... I wonder that too, and most people who get emotionally invested in the series probably do. I think you're right, Lawlight was a lot more personal because of the time L and Light spent together. And I think that since L and Light were both very motivated by boredom and ego and a strong sense of superiority that they clicked pretty effortlessly in many ways.
I personally think that Near had more of an... I dunno, appropriate reaction? To Light, at least in terms of the immense carnage he was causing and the authoritarian tyranny he had been gaining with the notebook worldwide. Colder and more distant, yes. But Near also had a much different relationship with Light by default, as a kid who grew up in the midst of this strange new world Light was creating, I think. Near saw a lot of the suffering and chaos Kira created firsthand, and he went through a ton of stress because of him during his formative years. He watched his fellow successor, most of his own team, and his idolized childhood hero all die due to the repercussions of Light's actions. And he definitely had every right to be angry and unsympathetizing and to see Light as an "abominable murderer" at that point, I would say.
But I agree that at the same time it would be intriguing to see L and Light actually given the opportunity to confront each other honestly for real, and to know exactly how L would react to something like Light personally appealing to his emotions. I wonder what kind of things Light would say to L if he really could speak openly to him for once. L did actually show some compassion for Light at times; like when he acknowledged that anyone with Kira's abilities was an unfortunate person for even being given that kind of power over others in the first place.
Tumblr media
I'm sure it would make for a very emotional scene or two in a finale that was already pretty gut-wrenching for me to watch.

Hi ZJ! I have one for you. We always talk about Light & Mikami & the different aspects of their relationship, but we never talk about the fact that Ryuk is looming around there with them lol I would love to hear your HCs on this!
Hi Rae! Of course! So the panels where see Mikami and Ryuk together crack me up a lot because:
Tumblr media
- Mikami never bothers to learn Ryuk’s name and just calls him ‘shinigami.’ Since Ryuk told Light his name off the bat, I’d assume he did so again but Mikami isn’t having it. Mikami doesn’t talk things out with Ryuk either, he keeps his thoughts to himself unless he has a question.
Tumblr media
- Ryuk is pretty disinterested in Mikami overall and can’t wait to get back to Light. He’s all like, ‘can I go now??’ The feeling seems mutual and Mikami even forgot Ryuk was there. Which means Ryuk was uncharacteristically quiet and not acting up with his cackling, asking lots of questions and making excited faces, etc. He is much more reserved around Mikami vs Light, just standing there vs lying on Mikami’s bed (which I would have loved to see Mikami’s reaction to!!)
Tumblr media
- Mikami asked Ryuk at least twice whether Ryuk was his god or if Kira was. So his first assumption seeing Ryuk was that this was Kira (must have been a shock), and he’s having to reconcile that there are gods of death as well as ‘his’ god Kira, and these beings are separate gods. To me, the fact he asks again before Ryuk leaves means this rocks his worldview a little. Of all the different concepts of godhood in Death Note, Mikami struck me as a person who had believed there was one all-powerful deity that was affecting his life and the world. Seeing Ryuk challenges that. Also, Ryuk tells Mikami the truth when he wasn’t obligated to; he did it for Light (who would be so chuffed to hear Ryuk call him Mikami’s god).
Tumblr media
- Despite Mikami considering Ryuk as interesting as a sentient mailbox, he still shows gratitude for the shinigami eyes even though the price was so steep (half your life). This is probably what he considers the appropriate response to a blessing from (a) god—humility and thanks.
Tumblr media
- Even in just a few panels, Obata maximized the funny juxtaposition of Mikami’s serious demeanor against Ryuk’s goofy appearance. Ryuk is behaving but he still looks Like That lol.
All this to say that Light will be the pivot point for Mikami and Ryuk to relate to each other. I don’t think either is interested in the other off the bat, but I could see Ryuk enjoy teasing Mikami or trying to get a rise out of him once he was more comfortable around him. Especially if it amused Light (and it would lol). Mikami would probably complain to Light privately about ‘the shinigami’s’ lack of manners and decorum and Light would grin and shrug like ‘what can I do? It’s how he is.’ I could even see Mikami being a little jealous of the attention Light gave to Ryuk; Light does talk to him and tease him and generally likes having him around. It would take some time for Mikami to get used to Ryuk’s constant voyeurism while Light accepted it easily.
Ryuk also epitomizes some things Mikami doesn’t like— laziness, and power that isn’t being turned towards a greater purpose than one’s self. Unlike Mikami who is constantly helping Light, Ryuk is just in it for the lulz. I can imagine Mikami giving Ryuk a dressing-down about that and Ryuk having a good laugh. Mikami would probably be non-plussed to find out how the shinigami realm was run, and grouse that none of the shinigami deserved such power. To him, the best thing Ryuk ever did (and a BIG redeeming factor) is “choose” Light to give the notebook to. They would be an odd but very humorous trio! Maybe Ryuk could help loosen Mikami up, and Mikami might get to find out about what his idol Winston Churchill was like if Ryuk happened to be watching earth at that time.

Ryuk/Reader 6: Murder Is a Hell of a Drug

“Do you like the rain, Ryuk?”
It wasn’t often that you caught Ryuk in the middle of thinking, but as he turned toward you and you caught sight of his peculiar eyes coming back into focus, you realized you’d done just that.
The shinigami looked at you for a long moment, and you wondered what had changed. Ryuk was always watching. His purpose was largely to observe the world for lives to end, and you knew as much after being connected to him for so long. Even so, you had noticed a difference in the way he looked at you, specifically.
He stared at you in a way you couldn’t explain, though it affected you greatly. Stares that shone with intelligence, scrutiny… possessiveness. The kind that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and that made you very aware of the heat of your own blood circulating beneath your skin.
“I do.” You couldn’t wait for an answer. “Everything gets a little quieter when it rains.”
Leaning against the kitchen countertop, mindful of the sink that you’d just emptied, you looked out of the tiny window into the dreary world outside. There wasn’t much to see, as everything was muddled dark and grey, but raindrops pebbled on the window panes for you to follow with your eyes.
You inhaled with a little effort, taking time to fill your lungs as though you were finally able to breathe upon having something heavy lifted off your shoulders. “Makes me miss home, though.”
You could feel as well as hear the shift when Ryuk perked up. “Home?”
“Yeah. Well, where I grew up at least.” You replied. “We didn’t live in the city, and there were woods behind the house.”
Before you could prepare yourself mentally, you felt a solid weight against your back. Emaciated as he looked, Ryuk’s presence was substantial, and he could be incredibly stealthy if he so desired. Sometimes it made you nervous, but you took advantage of it then and leaned back, pulling gangly arms to wrap around you (in spite of Ryuk’s latent stinginess). Your head rested at the lower end of where Ryuk’s ribs were, and you could feel them faintly through his clothes.
And his skin. You reminded yourself that he had skin beneath the black leather. It was grey, too firm and unnaturally cold - or so you imagined.
(You really needed to stop thinking about Ryuk without his clothes on. It was becoming a habit.)
“It could be so quiet that you could hear the wind through the trees.” You shivered involuntarily, and were held tighter for it.
(It didn’t help your offending habit that you felt more content in the arms of this creature than you had in the last decade of your life.)
“You don’t talk about when you were a kid much.” The intonation in Ryuk’s voice was curious, but you moreso felt the way it reverberated through him against your spine.
You shrugged. “I don’t like to think about it, honestly.”
Thinking about it at that moment was merely part of the chain reaction that came after you’d written down someone’s name. You cycled between forced indifference and a crushing sense of despair whenever you killed; it was a vicious way of thinking that you’d suffered from since childhood. One where you always failed to be what your family needed you to be.
You supposed your behavior was pitiful with respect to anyone else who’d come across a death note. Or warlords and kings that could command thousands to murder, not giving it a second thought because they didn’t have to be the one taking another’s life. It was melodramatic of you to fuss so, when all it took to kill somebody on your end was the stroke of a pen.
You were pitiful to Ryuk, certainly. This was what he lived for, and another little part of you feared that you weren’t putting in enough effort to make him stay.
“Why?”
You were pulled from your train of thought and while annoyed, you couldn’t help but snort.
“It doesn’t matter.” You said morosely.
Ryuk shuffled around you, but didn’t make a move to let you go. Instead, he continued to surprise you. “Yeah it does.”
Ryuk was looking down at you when you made the effort to look up at him, craning your neck until you were pushing back into his chest. You blinked at him and the way his lower lip stuck out in something close to a pout.
“If it makes you sad, it matters.” He said guilelessly.
A lump formed in your throat, but before you could give in and cry - your heart seized with pure love for this spectre that was meant to bring misery and misfortune into your life - you smiled.
“I’ll tell you, but…” You cleared your throat, not quite able to produce anything other than a bubbling laugh. “Only if you tell me something in return.”
***
Ryuk lay with his overlong legs splayed well over the arm of the couch while he kept his head in your lap. He’d seen people like this, not just from the world below but in tv dramas and movies where the characters were meant to be in love.
He blamed opening his big mouth and enthralling you with the story of his previous stint on earth on this. And that you had happily begun to comb through his hair after he’d started.
Truth be told, Ryuk had been uncharacteristically reserved about when he’d been following Kira. Others of his kind had been interested, but he’d kept many of the details to himself as if his trip were personal. There was no rational reason for him to not tell, but Ryuk had once supposed in his isolation from the others that a bit of human behavior had rubbed off on him after all that time spent among them.
Regardless, Ryuk felt the need to tell you everything if you asked him to.
“He sounds like a rotten person.”
“Eh?” Ryuk made a noise of confusion.
As it turned out, you had certainly heard of Kira, mass murderer extraordinaire, although his time had come when you were still in grade school. Ryuk’s former charge had been many things while alive, but even in death he’d continued to score accolades. Your knowledge of Kira came from world history class. Before that, you’d been a child left unsupervised in front of a news broadcast with the number of human lives lost right before your eyes.
Scary. Incomprehensible.
“People talked about Kira when I was young.” You explained, “Mostly adults, teachers… they’d try to keep it from kids, but there were some that tried to bully you by threatening that Kira would kill your family.”
Ryuk laughed at that, but you could only manage a faint smile.
It was definitely silly, and yet.
You chewed at your lower lip. “When I was little, Kira was like an entity, or some kind of force. Like God. That’s how everyone made him out to be, but...”
“It was just a human all along.” You murmured, staring off into the middle-distance. “A kid.”
“Does that upset you?” Ryuk tilted his head, keen on the softness of your stomach against him. The use of the word ‘ordinary’ certainly threw him for a loop, as he hadn’t considered Kira (Light) to be ordinary compared to any other human.
Except for maybe you, yourself.
“I don’t know.” You replied, meeting his yellow eyes. “I feel a little hypocritical judging him when I just killed somebody an hour ago.”
Ryuk couldn’t see his own expression, but however he looked after that blunt bit of insightfulness had you burst into a fit of delirious giggles. It was contagious enough to join in with, though he was further thrown for a loop when you hunkered down and hugged him to you.
“Did you care about him?” You asked abruptly with your cheek resting against the shinigami’s forehead. “Do you miss him?”
“No.” Ryuk supplied truthfully. He said so rather quickly, but it was the scent of you and the feeling of your hair draped over his face that took up all his attention. “Not when the fun was over.”
You chuffed. “Now you’re having fun with me instead, right?”
The god took his opening, wrapping his arms around you of his own volition and pulled you down close, until he could feel your warm breath against his neck. His claws bit into the fabric of your shirt as he squeezed you to him.
“Right.”
There was no resistance from you, only a minor bit of maneuvering to stay comfortable in his embrace. Ryuk was internally thankful for it, as it eliminated that fear that he’d been under for days now, wherein he felt like you might disappear if he took his eyes off you even once. You were here, with him, and not some stupid human man that you barely knew, and he could relax for the first time in what felt like forever.
“And we’re gonna have even more fun together, right?”
“Right.” Ryuk grunted. “Er - !”
Ryuk froze at the sensation of your lips gliding over his clavicle, all while your body shifted until you were seated firmly over his pelvis.
When you rose to look down at him, your smirk embodied pure mischief. “Right.”

All That I Can Give
summary: kiko is a struggling business owner thrown into the chaos of the borderlands. when she makes a mistake that will threaten her life, she learns just how far she will go to keep herself alive.
TW: DEATH, MENTIONS OF ATTEMPTED SUICIDE, MENTAL HEALTH, TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS, VIOLENCE
chapter 8: cops and robbers
previous chapter
Kiko and Tetsu looked up at the police station with cautiousness. Kiko couldn’t help but snap her head back to the sign lighting up with the words GAME ARENA, turning her head back to the station. It didn’t look like the arena could be anywhere else.
“You sure this is the right place?”
Tetsu grunted. “Unfortunately.”
“I don’t have a great feeling about this.” Kiko sighed. Absentmindedly, her hand ran through her ponytail, curling the ends around her finger. Her bandaged hand remained limp at her side.
“It can’t be any worse than any of the other games,” Tetsu paused. “Right?”
Kiko felt inclined to agree, just to ease the knot of stress that had tensed his shoulders. She didn’t want him going into a game too riled up - it would make her job ten times harder. She didn’t want to tell him what really was on her mind, how each time she played instead of getting better, it seemed to get worse, and her brain had been conjuring up endless possibilities throughout her sleepless night.
Each time she had entered a game, she had been alone. Each time she left with more memories she couldn’t erase.
Maybe it would be different this time.
She prayed it would be different this time.
Forcing one foot in front of the other, Kiko led the way into the police station. Tetsu was hot on her heels, letting the heavy door slam shut, making their presence known. Curious eyes followed the pair to the table set up in the entrance. She paid them no mind. Kiko passed Tetsu a phone, pulling hers to her face to register.
“REGISTRATION COMPLETE.”
Her brows involuntarily pulled together. The swirling sensation in her gut slowly turned into a tornado. She couldn’t shake the feeling that the game master had been waiting for them to arrive, and now that they had, was far too happy to make them endure misery.
“GAME: COPS AND ROBBERS. GAME DIFFICULTY: TWO OF CLUBS.”
Kiko wanted to cheer. This would be her easiest game yet. Perhaps they could breeze through this. A quick glance around the room told her the feeling was mutual.
Her eyes continued to wander around the room as the rules were explained. “RULES: PLAYERS ARE EITHER A COP, OR A ROBBER. THE COPS WILL HUNT DOWN THE ROBBERS. ROBBERS WILL ESCAPE THE COPS. THE TEAM WITH THE MOST PLAYERS REMAINING AFTER TWENTY MINUTES WINS.”
She tried to assess the players around her. No one particularly stood out to her, besides a man and woman leaning against the counter. The woman was draped over the man, playing with what looked like a bracelet around her wrist. The man had a matching bracelet, and from where Kiko stood it looked like it said 32. She wondered for a moment what that could mean. They were both wearing beach wear. Kiko tried to dismiss her growing questions.
No matter how hard she tried to pull her attention away from the pair, something kept dragging her back. It was almost like she was being pulled in by some omnipotent force. Something about the man niggled at the back of her brain. She tried desperately to conjure the answer.
He flashed her a glowing smile.
Kiko choked on air.
Ares himself had joined the Borderlands. It was Ryuk.
“ROBBERS HAVE A TEN MINUTE HEAD START - PICK YOUR WEAPON AND MASK FROM THE TABLE.”
Kiko hadn’t even checked her phone to see what role she’d been assigned. She was too busy staring at her tormentor. He looked well, no major injuries or the slightest hint that the Borderlands was starting to affect him. He was made for this world after all.
“Kiko,” Tetsu snatched the phone out of her hand, checking the role it had assigned her. “We’re both robbers, lets go.”
She was grateful for the distraction, looking down at the selection of weapons with a frown. “This is it?”
A hammer was the most lethal item on the table. Before anyone could reach for it, another member of her team had already snatched it up. Amongst the weapons were a backpack, stationary, and a set of walkie talkies.
Tetsu grabbed the walkie talkies. He selected the first mask he could find, snorting at the terrifying clown design. “Here, it suits your face.”
Kiko couldn’t even think of a retort. She took the mask and slid it onto her face, disappearing into the police station. Tetsu jogged to keep up.
“You didn’t pick a weapon!”
The words didn’t even process in her brain. She was consumed with the past, memories blurring before her eyes. Scars burned and bruises lit up at the flashbacks. Her throat constricted the more these thoughts rushed through, until it absorbed her very being.
A pair of rough hands pushed her into the wall. She cried out, healing bruises on her back radiating agony. Kiko resisted the urge to cower, prying open her eyes that she hadn’t even realised had closed.
Through the limited field of vision through the mask, she could see Tetsu towering over her. His hands were tight on her arms, his mouth set from the gap she could see in his mask. “You need to put whatever is bothering you to the back of your mind. We’re in a game now. Don’t let whatever it is get us killed.”
Kiko’s entire body was quivering. Tetsu relaxed his grip. The fury ebbed away as he squeezed her arm reassuringly, as if to try to replace the memory of his vice like grip. “I’m sorry.” He whispered.
Visibly gulping, she brushed him off. She cleared her throat. “It’s fine.”
Puling away from Tetsu, she started to pound her way down the hall. “Where are the others?”
“They took off.”
Kiko froze in her steps. She slowly turned to Tetsu, unable to close her jaw. “But this is a clubs game?”
“I think the plan is to stay as wide spread as possible. If it’s harder to find us, it’s harder to kill us.” He sighed. He lifted his mask away from his face for a moment, rubbing his hand against his jaw. “We should stick together. If we get split up, find the CCTV room.”
Kiko agreed to the plan. He passed her a walkie talkie, attaching his own to his own belt loops. Kiko followed suit. “We can use these to talk to each other. It lets us know that the other person is still alive.”
“THE TEN MINUTE HEAD START IS OVER. GAME START. GOOD LUCK.”
Kiko shivered at those words. She clenched and unclenched her fists, gaze moving all around them.
“We need to hurry, find somewhere that’s quiet.”
Tetsu agreed. As quietly as they could, they crept through the halls of the police station. Kiko kept an eye out for any weapons she could use lying around. She prayed she might have been able to find a gun in a drawer, or a knife taped beneath a desk.
So far, nothing.
She cursed the movies she had seen as she opened another drawer, only to find the contents empty. It seemed that if there was a higher force here, it was set on mocking her.
They carried on down the hall. The slap of fast, staggered footsteps grabbed their attention. In a flash, Tetsu and Kiko parted, Kiko hiding beneath a desk and Tetsu splaying himself as flat as he could inside of an alcove.
The pair of them held their breath as a masked face ran past, heaving breaths and limping gait.
“Please - someone help me!” The woman cried out, tripping over her own feet. She crashed to the floor in a heap. Her body heaved up and down. She made no attempt to get back up.
Tetsu moved to leave his corner. His eyes connected to Kiko. She firmly shook her head. A bad feeling churned in her gut as another pair of footsteps, almost teasingly slow, crept up to the woman.
“Did you seriously think you could out run me?”
Tetsu slid as far back into the shadows he could. Kiko watched the scene unravel with baited breath. The same bracelet caught her attention as the predator leant down.
Ryuk.
Ryuk snatched the woman, spinning her so she was laying flat on the ground. Her cries grew in intensity. He crouched in front of her, swiftly removing her mask, both hands caressing her cheeks. In his silky smooth voice, he whispered a sweet nothing in her ear. “You have nothing to fear.”
A resounding crack deafened Kiko’s ears. The woman’s body collapsed to the floor. Kiko fought the urge to scramble backwards as the woman’s unseeing eyes stared in her soul. She was fixated on the bent angle of the woman’s neck. Her thoughts should be full of fear but all Kiko could feel was an overwhelming sense of relief that it wasn’t her.
“NINE ROBBERS REMAINING.”
Kiko swore under her breath. It was only a few minutes into the game and already one of the members of her team was dead. If they carried on at this rate, there wouldn’t be any of her team left at all.
Her hands were itching to grab a hold of Ryuk’s neck. To feel the life pulse and strain under her palms as he fought for breath. She craved to see the face of a scared little boy as she stole his future from him. Kiko wanted to hear the bodiless voice shout out her victory in murdering the very man who destroyed her life.
As if sensing what she was thinking, Tetsu shook his head. His warning struggled to bypass the bloodlust corrupting her thoughts. She wanted Ryuk dead.
She could convince herself it was for the game; she never was very good at lying to herself.
“Ryuk!” A girly whine screeched. “Why did you steal my kill?”
A manic smile spread on Ryuk’s lips. “If you didn’t play with your food, you could have killed her sooner.”
The girl huffed. She draped her arms around his neck, grinning at him brightly. “Promise to give me the next one?”
“Anything for you.” He leered at her. Ryuk cupped her cheek almost lovingly, dragging a thumb over her skin. “But remember - if you see that Kiko girl, she’s mine.”
Kiko wasn’t able to see Tetsu’s reaction, but she imagined it wasn’t good. She was going to have a lot of explaining to do later. Kiko’s thigh started to cramp from the awkward position. She tried to delicately manoeuvre herself.
Her hand slapped the floor.
Wide eyes connected to Tetsu’s. She prayed to whatever higher power there was that the sound was muffled. In her experience, prayers never usually worked.
“What was that?”
Kiko tensed her muscles. She started to slowly rise into a squat, readying herself to run. She shared a panicked look with Tetsu. His hands were moving as if signalling to her a plan. In the darkness of the shadows, Kiko couldn’t translate.
“Hey - get back here!” Ryuk boomed.
Tetsu darted from his corner, sprinting down the corridor. Ryuk bolted after him. Kiko had an overwhelming sense of deja vu. She felt her mind grasp the edges of the memory, a vile feeling halting her from submerging herself completely. She needed to do whatever she could to stop Ryuk. First, she had bigger fish to fry.
His friend was about to trail him when Kiko popped up from behind the desk. In a split second, she instinctively grabbed a chair from behind the desk and threw it at the girl. She screeched, ducking out of the way.
It bought Kiko the precious seconds she needed to sprint in the opposite direction to Tetsu. She hated Ryuk chasing him, but at least now he only had one wolf targeting him than two.
The girl was closing in behind. She grabbed a handful of Kiko’s ponytail, dragging her backwards. Her scalp burned. A grunt left Kiko as she stumbled backwards into the girl.
The girl tried reaching for her again. Kiko dodged the attack this time, pouncing to the left. The girl clenched her fist. Kiko didn’t give her time to land the punch, kicking furiously at the girl’s knee. She crumbled momentarily.
A moment is all it takes.
Kiko pushed the girl with all her might. The girl fell backwards, her body falling, falling, falling. Her head connected with a desk. A sickening crunch violated Kiko’s senses.
“NINE COPS REMAINING.”
Swallowing thickly, Kiko spun on her heel. She fought the urge to turn back and witness the consequences of her destruction, She resisted the need to clamp her hands over her ears to stop that awful sound on repeat.
She didn’t have time for that. She had to find Tetsu.
Walking on the palms of her feet, she slowly made her way out of the main corridor. She cast a glance in all directions, deeming it safe after a minute and dashing across the gap.
“EIGHT ROBBERS REMAINING.”
Kiko’s steps quickened. She rushed through the halls as fast as her body could take her, without sacrificing her caution.
Hearing muffled voices, Kiko threw herself behind the nearest door. She splayed herself as flat as she could against the wall, sucking in her stomach and holding her breath. It felt like eons before the voices even reached her. Her lungs begged for air - she held on for longer. She couldn’t risk the smallest sound exposing her.
The voices soon became silent. Kiko gasped for breath, sneaking a quick glance from behind the door. At the sight of no other people, she began to leave her hiding place. An object on the wall made her freeze in her tracks.
Break glass in case of an emergency flashed at her. Kiko brought herself in front of the axe, a sense of relief falling on her shoulders. No longer weapon less, she could focus on finding Tetsu, not just on being undetected.
One.
Two.
Three times she slammed her elbow against the glass. It shattered into fragmented pieces, the sound piercing the eerie silence. Kiko cringed, prying the axe off of it’s bracket and testing it’s weight in her hands. It was light enough to carry with her, extra weight aggravating her bleeding elbow.
With her new found weapon at her side, she moved closer to her destination, the bodiless voice announced the fallen. By the time she was at the CCTV room, there were only four cops remaining and three robbers. Kiko pulled out her phone.
Five minutes until game over.
Five minutes to kill one more cop and win.
Peeking through the glass, Kiko felt fury surge through her veins. Without a second thought, she yanked the door wide open.
The three men were busy kicking Tetsu. They were laughing, delivering harder kicks to his side, snickering whenever Tetsu let out a cry. At the centre of this was Ryuk, a splatter of blood spread on his cheeks. Just a glimpse of Tetsu’s face was enough to provide her the strength to swing the axe straight into the neck of one of his attackers.
The man fell to the floor, grabbing at his neck. Blood rushed over him in a steady stream, his body quickly falling to the floor.
“THREE COPS REMAINING.”
For them to win, she could have stopped now. She could have ceased her rage and waited for the game to end. Six people could leave this game alive.
But that wasn’t going to happen.
“Kiko, you finally join us.”
Kiko didn’t waste any time with small talk. She hurtled herself at the man, knocking the pair of them to the ground. Ryuk took the brunt of the hit, his head slamming on the floor. He grunted. Kiko relished in the sound, it lighting her body in a way nothing else had ever before.
She clenched her fist, slamming it down into his nose. His head snapped backwards, blood freely gushing from his nostrils. Her knuckles burned at the contact yet a smile crept onto her face. Red looked so good on him. She needed to see more. Her arm moved forward to punch him again.
She was suddenly stopped in her tracks. He was gripping her arm tightly, pushing it further and further away from his face. She tried to shake out of his grip. It only stronger.
Sloppily, her bandaged hand came down to his face. Her hand barely skimmed his cheek. A bloodied smile spread on his face. “Still a weakling, aren’t you?”
He pushed her backwards. Kiko fell flat on her back. She tried to ignore the healing wounds crying at the aggravation. She tried to stand up - his presence loomed over her. He stared down at her from above, gripping her jaw in a tight grip. She flung herself in every direction to free herself. His hand only gripped her tighter. In a last ditch effort, Kiko spat gracefully at him.
Swearing, he wrapped an arm around her neck. She felt his grip tightening. Her windpipe cried out, air cut off. She frantically clawed at his arm, arching her head as far up as she could, trying and failing to suck in air.
“This,” he whispered in her ear, moving her hair with his breath. “This is what I’ve been waiting to do for years.”
Everything was starting to become blurry. Her vision was slowly darkening, her eyes begging to flutter shut. Her arms wildly flew out, attempting to land a hit and make it all stop. In her narrowing vision, she caught sight of Tetsu, relentlessly fighting his own attacker.
You fight to get back home.
Tetsu’s words echoed in her mind. She wasn’t dying. Not without a fight. If she was going to die, she was going to leave him with a scar to remind him just who the hell she was.
Kiko clamped her teeth down on Ryuk’s arm. She bit him hard enough to draw blood, not stopping as she heard him yowl in pain. His grip loosened slightly - all it takes is one moment. Kiko slammed her head backwards, ignoring the stars floating before her as her head connected with his.
Now completely free of his grip, she quickly looked around the room. Grabbing a paperweight from a table, she climbed on top of her tormentor, using all of her strength to keep him down.
“GAME OVER - CONGRATULATIONS.”
Kiko looked down at Ryuk. She saw a powerless, weak man, trembling under her grip. She could spare him, having taught him the lesson she had been dying to teach him for years.
Or she could kill him.
Kiko tossed the paperweight from each hand, sneering down at Ryuk. “You made my life an absolute hell.”
“I’m sorry,” he trembled.
“Not good enough.”
Her hands slammed down. His skull buckled under the paperweight. There was a dent in his head, and from his blinking, teary eyes, he was still alive. Repeatedly Kiko slammed the paperweight into his head, turning his head into an unrecognisable mess, screaming manically.
Tears mingled with the blood and viscera on her face as she drove another shot into the remains, heaving. She had to keep going. She still knew it was him. She wanted to erase the memory of him, to destroy him like he had destroyed her. Nightmares rose up as she drove the paper weight down again and again and again.
Riku coming home with a black eye.
Finding the outside of her beloved music shop vandalised with death threats.
Waking up in the middle of the night to find he had broken in, the only trace being a knife lodged into a family photo.
Shaking like a leaf when he left, the brave façade falling as quickly as it had been built up.
The paper weight slipped from her hands. Her hands were coated in blood. A shaky breath passed Kiko’s lips as she slowly turned to look at what her hands had done once again.
She turned to the side, and vomited.
Gagging at the acidic taste lingering on her tongue, she wiped at the back of her mouth. As she stumbled to her knees, Kiko caught sight of a young girl hidden behind a cabinet, knees pulled in close to her chest. She was shaking, her head deeply hidden in her knees.
“I’m sorry.” She uttered in the empty space between them. The girl didn’t respond.
Forcing herself to turn away from her destruction, she started to look for Tetsu. He was sat leaning against a filing cabinet. Upon seeing her, he weakly lifted his hand up in a greeting. The cop he’d been fighting was unconscious on the floor next to him.
Tetsu looked at the state of Kiko. To her surprise, he didn’t flinch away.
She offered him a hand. He groaned as he took it, leaning the majority of his body weight on her.
“Let’s get out of this hell hole.”

i keep writing and rewriting my reaction to vincenzo because there are a lot but also i'm not certain i articulate everything i hated about the ending.
i will say that i knew no matter what that i wouldn't like the ending because murdering a character as punishment for their misdeeds is not something that appeals to me. i grew up watching kirikou et la sorcière, avatar: the last airbender, lilo and stitch, and (more recently) moana. all of these are stories that say "here is an evil character that we'll stop in a way that doesn't involve jail/murder," and the only exception i make for this is light yagami's death in death note and that's because ryuk killed him as a way to end their relationship, not as a punishment for his crimes. (and gothic lit is exempt bc they have to be resolved with murder.) so, whatever happened, regardless of how much violence the babel four did, none of their deaths would have held any emotional satisfaction for me. yet i prepared myself to be unimpressed by the finale since this is what the set up has always been: vincenzo will kill hanseok, and maybe myunghee, seunghyeok, and hanseo.
i knew this from the beginning. the narrative repeated it so often i got annoyed. there were so many close calls with vincenzo pulling a gun on hanseok that that got boring. by the time ep. 20 rolled around i was just fed up and wanted someone to die because this show had already failed me so many other times with their set ups that i wanted at least one good payoff.
lo and behold, they did end up killing the four characters i thought would die. hanseo died, and though he was my favorite character, and though i felt sad he didn't get any funeral scene or help while he was fending off his brother and that his death served as a sacrifice for vincenzo instead of literally anything else, i didn't cry or even get mad about it. he died and i felt free to stop caring about the rest of the story. yay me! i do understand the fans who hated that he was killed and that he should've survived bc abuse victims don't deserve the storyline hanseo got, but this is not a show i expected to actually care about victims. despite what it says, i knew i wouldn't get this for hanseo waaaaay back in ep 8 when they brought up the victims of that gay banker and just used it as a way for us to root against the banker. they didn't treat those victims with any respect at all and so i was already prepared for them to do it all over again. and they did and it sucks, but again for me i couldn’t get as angry as i normally would about this bc i always knew that the deaths from this show would never mean anything to me bc there was just so much of it it became meaningless.
another thing i knew that was going to let me down about this show is that it didn’t have a single “good” character for me to root for. mr. hong existed, but he was murdered early on. every other character on the show is too corrupt to be the ones i would want handling a reconstruction project for a more ethical world. yes, they made hanseo go through a redemption arc, but they didn’t let him stay did they? they focused so much on deconstruction they never cared about reconstruction. so when they got to the ending where vincenzo just leaves, chayoung and the tenants are thrown into a familiar cycle of court cases and defending their plaza from it being redeveloped, vincenzo just goes on to be a mafia boss again, and the guillotine file is back in the hands of the corrupt intelligence agency that created it on the orders of their president. the only thing that changed was babel group was destroyed bc their two ceos were murdered and the lawyers of their legal rep. were also murdered.
and yet, despite my expectations being so low they were basically non-existent, i was still disappointed. they didn't let chayoung do anything (which i knew would happen because i knew something about her characterization never felt fully fledged to me the way it did to fandom, so i wasn't surprised when they delegated her as a damsel-in-distress/love interest.), they killed myunghee the way we used to burn witches (which how fitting for a female character that is cunning and cruel), and the way they killed hanseok literally made me feel faint and nauseous (i wish this was an exaggeration; the second i saw the drill pointed at him i started feeling this way and i couldn't listen/watch his death scene because it was so brutal).
so, the ending satisfied nothing for me. if people who shipped the main characters were satisfied, whatever. i was never interested in them as a ship (i tend to ship vincenzo and chayoung with other characters), so the ending was even more disappointing bc it really held nothing that mattered to me.
i was also not a person that liked the way each character idolized vincenzo because i preferred his relationships with other characters to be filled with more tension* and the narrative just told me that the writers didn't, that vincenzo's word was what mattered, that the other character's conflicting needs were meant to be eclipsed by vincenzo's needs. so when the characters were all looking into the horizon hoping that vincenzo would some day come back (for what, i ask you?) i was just like :|
(*what do i mean by tension? i mean my favorite version of chayoung/vincenzo was the early eps when she hated him for being liked so much by her father that her flaws as a daughter were highlighted more and chayoung's own hesitancy with murder bumping up against vincenzo’s lack of hesitancy. mr. cho/vincenzo were most interesting when mr. cho wanted the guillotine file to use for his own purposes. the tenants/vincenzo were the most interesting when the tenants wanted to take the gold and vincenzo was trying to stop them. even hanseo/vincenzo was the most interesting when they had the "will you kill me? will you betray me?" tension as they worked together to get rid of hanseok. these dynamics added layers to the characters and reminded us they had their own motivations that were as equally important as vincenzo’s, but not enough of these tensions lasted past a few episodes and almost always would vincenzo's needs prevail with most of the other characters going along with his plans in the end.)
and this is all without mentioning how fandom sort of ruined a lot of the show for me, too. they took the characteristics that made the myunghee/hanseok dynamic one of my favorites and gave it to chayoung/vincenzo to the point where i was always left baffled and feeling like i was watching a different show. (a good point about the end for me is that i feel vindicated watching the scene where chayoung was basically like "i don't like your methods, vincenzo, but i needed to use them as the lesser of two evils to destroy hanseok," bc it did sort of reinforce for me my own reading of chayoung which was that she doesn't mind being corrupt and blackmailing people or scaring them into compliance, but that she was not going to get her hands covered in blood or dance over the corpses of her enemy. those traits belong to myunghee who accepts her role as a villain in a way that is as cool and collected as vincenzo. and lord, imagine what a show it would've been if the writers had made the kings chayoung/hanseok, the last ones that should ever be taken, while the queens were vincenzo/myunghee who would be the ones that would make all the moves, kill all their enemies pieces, and try to destroy one another first as the two most powerful players in the game? imagine if fandom had been able to read chayoung and myunghee accurately enough that i wouldn’t have to read post after post talking about how they needed to see myunghee brutally murdered/tortured by chayoung because they would understand chayoung’s character isn’t going to do that, posts which i hated seeing bc, as i said before, violence for violence’s sake means nothing to me? imagine if the writers cared enough about chayoung/myunghee to develop them more fully? sigh.)
i feel like i'm going nowhere with this and that i'm repeating myself a lot or not making much sense. but i'll end with this: i knew the last two episodes were going to be garbage when they all gathered at toto's restaurant post-fight in ep 19 and all they were talking about was vincenzo this and vincenzo that instead of worrying after the ones that were momentarily kidnapped/injured. like thanks show, for instead of pushing the narrative along we get a vincenzo fan club meeting and another round of "i never had anything to fight for until you came along" which is a convo we've had plenty of times before.

Where Light gets a friend (Lucky Light AU)
The AU where Light has exchanged all his braincells for luck continues.
Light *trying to follow a video tutorial about how to tie his necktie, more or less getting the hang of it until the voice of his moms takes him out of it* Sachiko: Light! We are going to get late! What is taking you so long? Light: I am going! *realizing it was a lost cause, took a pre-tied neck tie and ran downstair, only to his mom to fix the collar of his shirt and hair* Mom… Sachiko: Not a single word, Light. Today is a very important day! You are going to be giving the speech for the new freshman! You must have worked so hard for that perfect score and that deserves be celebrated! Light:… It’s not that big of a deal, mom. I mean, I am not going to be the only one standing there. Apparently some other guy also got perfect score and is going to be reading his own speech, so, really, it’s not that impressive. Sachiko: But what you are talking about? Of course it is! That other student probably worked just as hard as you, but I bet you will get the better grades at the end of the year, right, Light? Light: Sure, mom. Sayu: Aww, almost so modest, Light! So modest that you will have no problema letting your little sister be front seat! Light: Hey, I didn’t say any… She is already there. Sachiko: Don’t worry, Light. Today I will have your favourite dish prepared for dinner. Today is your day and Sayu understand that too. Light *feeling himself sick* Great. *among the other students, Light feels like wanting to ran away until he feels a hand over his shoulder and he almost jumped on his seat at the fixed stare of some pale guy with black hair, who tilted his head at his reaction. He did know him, he had see him on the examination room, but still was surprised at suddenly having sit at his side.* L: I apoligize, maybe that was too abrupt from my part. Light: No, no, it’s fine. I am just a little bit nervous, that is all. I am supose to give the speech and, well, you know.  It’s fine. L: I know. Light Yagami, son of chief of police Soichiro Yagami, perfect score out of everyone else. You helped your father years ago to stop a trafficking gang. Impressive for a young student. Light:… Thank you? I… that is a bit of an awkward introduction, huh? I am sorry, I don’t think I remember your name.
L: It’s okay, I haven’t said it *the other extended his hand to him, shaking it firmly and staring into his eyes as he pronounced the next words* I am L. Ryuk: Welp, that is new. Light *blinked a couple of times, still shaking the hand on a mechanical movement* What.
L: I am L. I would have hoped that would warrant some kind of reaction, but maybe I overstimate things. Light: No, no, I did hear you. I am just… like L-L? The L?  The detective L? That L? L: Yes. Light:…
Ryuk:…
Light: Can I get your autograph? L *this was the time for the other one to blink*… no. Light: Okay, okay, like but. Like… Oh, god, I am like… such a big fan of your work, if that is really who you really are! Like, that case on Los Angeles was so amazing, I must have read that book like four times and that is saying a lot, really! L has always been such a cool and misterious character and, like, I don’t know if you are joking or not, but actually getting to meet him would so amazing! Although that wouldn’t really make sense because why would L be here? Ryuk: He could be here to investigate you himself. Since you are a suspect and all, in case you forgot. Light: Oh… *realizing he hasn’t let go of his hand on all that time he finally released him* Sorry, I got a little too excited there. Are you really L? L: Yes. Light: Wow… The announcer: Light Yagami! Ryuk/L: They are calling you. Light: What? Oh, right, sorry!
The announcer: And the other student with the perfect score, please come to the stage, Hideki Ruyga.
Light *he instantly recognized the name, just like everyone else, when L came to give his speech while staring at a blank piece of paper* He is so cool…
Ryuk: You do know that he could find you out, right? Light *cover his mouth with his hand* I still have eyes and see he is cool. He was going to caught me sooner or later anyway. I already knew that. I just didn’t thought he was actually come to talk to me directly. Ryuk: You sound like your sister when talking about her idols. Light: Shut up.
*after the ceremony and greeting some friends, Light found L just as the man was walking to him* L/Light: Hey. L: You first. Light: Want to have something to eat? There is this really cool place nearby that has the best strawberry cake. L: Curious. I was just about to suggest you the same thing. Light: Then we should go! Do you like strawberry cake, L?
L: Yes. And would prefer if you used Ruyga Hideki, if you don’t mind.
Light: Sure, sure.  Sorry, you are right.
*on the little place, Light points at a comfortable place close to the windows and they sat to make their orders. Light can barely contain his smile as he suggest L the best cakes and teas there are* Light: I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but somehow I imagined you were taller. Wait, it does comes out wrong, right? Sorry, I just… really can’t believe that you are really here. L:… To be quite honest, I didn’t came here merely for socializing. Ligh: S-sure. Right. Of course. You are here for the Kira case, right? L: What gave you that impression? Light: Well, it doesn’t take much to deduce that since that is the case of major profile right now and both Kira and L had this whole confrontation on TV. It was… so shocking to see that guy die like that. L: Mmm. You shouldn’t feel too bad about it. That guy had murdered her wife and three daughters before being caught and send to his execution. The only reason he accepted play that role was the promise of getting a full release in case he came out alive. He never expressed any regret for what he had done. Light: Wait, really? That… that is horrible. Still… L: Mmm? Light: He shouldn’t have died like that. And he shouldn’t have let be freed either, so I don’t know. I guess you didn’t had any other choice. L: Indeed. It provided important information about the way Kira kills. Light: Oh, and that is why the fake name, right? Ryuk:… you just now realized that?
L: Yes. Kira seems to need both a name and face in order to do what he does. I still have yet to figure out the way in which he does it. Light: You probably will. Sooner or later. Ryuk: Hehe, suddenly that cake seems to have make you sick, Light. L: I think so too *ate absentmindly the cake and then stared at the plate, the fork still on his mouth* Light: Good, right? I almost wish I knew how to bake just so I could do stuff like that and see people reactions. But I would probably burn it if I don’t burn the kitchen.
L:You should still try it. A intelligent guy like yourself could manage. Then send me a piece. Light:… being good at school doesn’t mean someone is good at everything, you know. You… you are smart. Really smart. If you wanted I am sure you could do all the cakes you want, exactly how you want them. I am just… lucky, I guess? L:…
L: You are way too modest. That is unexpected of someone with your background. Light: Not really? I mean, when you think about it, knowing what some text book said or marking the right circle on a piece of a paper is not as big as, say, knowing how to make cakes people like and can enjoy. I am sorry, I am probably speaking nonsense. L:… L: If you really feel that way, then that is all the more reason to attempt to do something you do feel more satisfied with. Light: You really only want more cake, don’t you? L: … maybe. Light: Alright. I will give it a thought at least. I don’t promise anything, though. L: Mmm. Fluffy. Light: Yeah, right? L: Changing subject. I imagine you have dedícated some thought to the Kira case as well. Having your own father on the investigation team could make it difficult to ignore. Light:Sure, but I think is difficult to ignore for everyone else with how much the news talk about it.
L: Fair enough. According tothe information we have right now, what conclusión do you make? Light: About Kira? Mmm. I don’t know. More than him I don’t really like the way people are treating the whole thing, but maybe it was inevitable. L: What do you mean? Light: I mean like Sakura TV calling him Kira-sama or people getting into fights deciding if they think is right or wrong. Again, it was more likely inevitable considering nothing like this happened before.
L: People are dying. That is naturally going to open discussion among the public. Light: People were dying before and nobody made that much of a fuzz then.
Light: I-I mean, um…
L: That is probably a fair assesment too. Although the way people are dying is note worthy. What do you think about Kira yourself? I am interested in hearing your thoughts about the way he operates. Ryuk: Ooh, you are being interrogated, Light. Better not lose your composture now. Light:Mmm. Light (FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, I AM FUCKED, I AM SO FUCKED, WHAT THE FUCK DO I SAY, WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO ANSWER TO THAT, WHAT IS HE WAITING FOR ME TO SAY, DO I LIE, DO I SAY WHAT I THINK, THE FUCK DOES HE WANT, IS HE GOING TO ARREST ME NOW, WHY THE FUCK DID I OPEN MY MOUTH) L: Light? Light: I… This is probably going to sound too out there. It’s probably stupid.
L: Let’s see.
Light: Well… I am thinking about the fake L on TV. If we are to assume that L and Kira are two different entities, and not one person playing games in front of everyone, then it’s reasonable to conclude that Kira really wasn’t aware that wasn’t the real L and that L himself had nothing to do with the killing. L probably prepared it very carefully and has known for a while that the victims don’t die through any kind of poisoning or any kind of contact. The killing is always centralized. And as you said, he needs a face and a name, not just one or the other. If he is not touching them but they are still dying… Maybe there is a… uh…. Supernatural force there? There is something definitely weird about how all these criminals are dying. I don’t think it’s possible we will never understand his way of killing by normal means, and so try to capture him through that deduction is probably fruiltless. L:…
Ryuk: You have been reading the conspiracy theories forums about Kira again, didn’t you, Light? Light (SHUT THE FUCK UP, I DON’T KNOW WHAT I AM DOING HERE)
L: That… makes sense. Light: It… it does? Ryuk: User KiraIsGood69 will be happy to hear. L: You are right, we have examined the bodes of many of the victims of Kira and found no trace of physical handling. Not to mention that the distance between the deaths and timing makes it impossible for one person to be present during for each of them. I am not really still at the point of thinking all rational explanations are off, but if the way Kira kill is so unique to him it’s not impossible to believe it’s a hability only him posses. Do you think Kira is human? Maybe a god like some have said? Light: Of course not. A god wouldn’t have made that mistake on TV. Besides, a god doesn’t really care about human lives. To them they are all the same, good or bad. Ryuk: Why are you looking at me? L: So it’s a human with a supernatural hability according to this theory. Inborn or given? Light (Wait, did I say a bad thing?) In-inborn, maybe? Because… if it was given, why Kira, right? What makes him so especial something would want to give him that skill? (Because a dumbass shinigami was bored and you were the idiot who caught the notebook, that is why).
L: Mmm. It’s a line of thinking, I suppose. But if he is human, as we both agreed on, then he can make mistakes and it can be stopped. What do you think about the times of death? Light: Well, they don’t happen all the time, obviously. Kira still has to eat and sleep. I haven’t followed on every case, but probably will get something out of seeing what could correspond with the times of death. L: Already tried that. We came to a conclusion that very quickly Kira turned down himself. How do you think that happened? Light:…
Light (Fuck): He… must have access to the investigation. How… horrible to think about. I hope no one that didn’t do anything ends up getting branded as a suspect *he put his hands on his lap when realized he could start shaking. L just then was talking with the waiter to ask her for another piece of cake for taking* L: We have a few names but I would say there is barely any porcentage of certainty right now. Light (don’t open your mouth, don’t open your mouth, don’t…) Am I a suspect?
L: You have a terrible concerned face right now, Light. You don’t have to get worried. We are still doing our investigation and whoever Kira is, we will catch him regardless. I won’t put anyone scrutiny unless I think there is a good reason for it.
Light: So yes. L:Yes, to put it briefly. Light:… well, makes sense. Can I ask something, though? L: Of course. Light: What will happen to Kira when he is captured? L: Once I gain definite proof of who he is and knows how he kills, I will make sure he is send to execution without any press ever releasing his name. With any luck he will forgotten by the general public and by the internet eventually. Die in complete anonymity, like Lyndon should have done. Light (That… is actually not that bad. If only that anonymity was extended to one’s family…) I see. It’s fair. L: Agreed. *he grabbed the box that the waiter brought for him and payed her* Well, was nice talking to you, Light. Hope to see you around the campus and maybe go to another place like this one if you happened to find it. Light: Really? Yeah! That sounds fun. Ryuk: And now you look like a happy puppy right after talking about your own execution.
L *nods and then walks outside as Light finishes his own cake, wondering what restaurants with good cakes he heard about* *late at night, Light walks with Ryuk behind, thinking. On his room again, and after Ryuk confirmed there weren’t more bugs, he sat on his bed as he throws Ryuk a new Apple he had bought on the way* Light: Ryuk. A question. Or two. I am sure yet. . Ryuk: Sure, sure, shoot it out.
Light: What happens if I want an out? If I don’t want to do this anymore? Ryuk: Well, you always can. Just give up the Death Note. But that would be kinda unfair for me, now that it was starting to get interesting. Light: So you will kill me? Ryuk: Mmmm. Probably. You told me to do it as soon your luck ran out. Did it? Light: No, but like… I just now I am realizing that when it does, it won’t just be me. If all happens behind doors I can imagine that papa won’t want to tell mom or Sayu what happened to me, but him… Fuck, why didn’t I think of that before? If I die now then I am still just Light Yagami, his son. Maybe it’s for the better. Ryuk:… Well, I can’t force you to change your mind. Are you sure? Light *nods* Ryuk: Say it then. Light *opened up his mouth when suddenly the voice of his mom cut him off* Sachiko: Light! A girl is looking for you! Light: Isn’t a little late…? *he comes down, to find a girl standing on the entrance, waving at him* Girl: I brought your notebook from today, Light! Hope you don’t mind the hour! *she pushed a black notebook to him and he took it without thinking, thinking he didn’t had any black notebook like that one before he looked up to a new Shinigami* Light: I-I-I.. thank you! Yep, very nice of you! *he closed the door, knowing Sayu and his mom were listening and walked to the girl a bit more, still whispering just in case* This is a Death Note. Girl: Yes! My name is Misa Amane and the shinigami that you see with me is Rem. You have no idea how long I have been waiting to meet you!

Death Note Part 1
Writer: Tsugumi Ohba
Illustrator: Takeshi Obata
Summary: Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects—and he's bored out of his mind. But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal…or his life?
Rating: ★★★★☆
Part 2
Review:
I really enjoyed this series. It was so engaging and thought provoking. There was one part that bored me to tears and I kind of hated but other than that it was near perfect.
I’ve broken up my notes into parts because I read the giant 2400 bind up so it would be too long to do one post.
If you kill, say, a leader of a terrorist organization that doesn’t mean their followers are just going to magically go away. This could cause a lot more chaos than Light can imagine. Look what happened in the Middle East. It’s a giant cluster fuck.
“Kira…will have to kill his own family.”—Page 111
Oh shit.
If you legally change your name do you have to use the person’s birth name or old name? What about nicknames?
I knew that Light wasn’t going to take the Death God Eye deal.
L’s mannerism are so cute.
“Even a probability of one percent is better than that, and needs to be scrutinized.”—Page 371
Reminds me of something Batman said about Superman in Batman V Superman.
L is at Light’s entrance exam? L, sweetie, what are you doing?
L and Light are going to college together! Please be roommates!
I guess L and Light are both pretty similar. They both go around telling each other their secret identities.
Wow, I never thought tennis could be so interesting.
L, YOU BLUNT FUCKER! He just ought right said that he thinks L is Kira.
“If you can’t find any good stories out there, then bloody well make something up, dammit!”—Page 495
Fake news before fake news was a thing.
“And even if you do not agree with me, if you refrain from publicizing your views in the media or in public, you will be spared.”—Page 523
Not fascist at all.
You go Yagami-San!
Interesting, so that other Death God came down with a Death Note and is now pretending to be Kira. We’ve got a copycat on our hands.
“…to be killed by Kira, but to die at the hands of an opportunist pretending to be Kira would really grate.”—Page 565
Of course.
Ah, so this is Misa. I’ve heard that “she’s” in the movie. Interesting.
“The internet is full of irresponsible claims about Kira and L’s identity, it would be impossible to verify.”—Page 606
I bet 4chan could have figured this out within ten minutes.
Rem, Misa’s Shinigami, knows how to kill a Shinigami.
They have to fall in love with a human? That sounded silly but it’s actually interesting.
I’m assuming that Misa is going to die because she’ll fall in love with Light. Oh, so Misa was the girl who going to get killed but Gelus saved her. So she received the Death Note.
“If you want me to kill her then I’ll do it right now.”—Page 660
Damn, Misa.
This is going to be an interesting relationship.
“I can’t let her live too long.”—Page 667
Very loving relationship.
“Misa: Then would you like me to call you ‘Knight’ instead? Since you’re Misa’s knight in shining armor, I’d love to call you that. Light:…No…Light is fine… Ryuk: HYUK HYUK HYUK”—Page 670
Alright, I approve of Misa being added to cast list.
Ryuk and I had the same reaction to Light calling Misa, “sweetie”.
“Yes…Light-Kun isn’t Kira…Or rather, I don’t want Light-Kun to be Kira. Because…Light-Kun is my first ever friend.”—L, Pages 701-702
L, sweetheart.
“If I die in the next few days, your son is Kira.”—Page 718
Poor Yagami-San, he’s being dragged along by L.
Wait, there are more L’s?
“I’ve been a huge fan since the March issue of ‘Eighteen’!”—Page 727
L, you weirdo.
L STOLE MISA’S PHONE!
“Misa Amane has been apprehended on suspicion of being the second Kira.”—Page 734
Wow!
So Misa gave up her ownership of the Death Note and now she’ll have no memories of what happened.
“I might be Kira.”—Light, Page 762
Go on.
So, now Light is pretending to be possessed or not have memory of it.
Wait, he actually got rid of the Death Note? I guess the next 1600 pages are going to be full of L and Light having a wacky college experience.
Shit, Rem gave Misa’s death note to someone else.
I’m sure after L and Light beat the shit out of each other, this bromance can truly bloom.
Y’know what would be an interesting villain? Someone who was framing people so Kira would kill them.
I miss Light having the Death Note. Also we kind of stopped hearing Light’s inner monologue which made this story interesting. Hear his thought process and figuring things out was enjoyable. I get that he can talk to L about this but it’s just not that fun.
“Kira can’t be that cheap. That would be so uncool.”—Page 868
Was a Millennial stereotype a thing back in the early 2000s? Matsuda totally is one.
“Dying in the line of duty is heroic, buy dying while unemployed is just stupid.”—Page 886
Nice L quote.
“There’s nothing to worry about. Eraldo Coil…is also me.”—L, Page 910
WHAT?!
Shimura is just nervous as fuck about everything.
“The number of pages of the Death Note will never run out.”
Good to know?
A problem with these business executives are that theyre clearly not really a challenge for Light and L. The two easily figure out who’s doing it, why they’re doing it and able to spy on them.
I don’t understand why is making comments about him dying. Bitch, these business men don’t know what the fuck their doing.
L and Light hit each other a lot.
“I gained another friend.”—Page 1011
D’awwwww! L!
Oh, now the bad guys are trying to be careful?
“I’ll take Misa Amane as my wife.”—Page 1024
That escalated quickly.
Rem took a piece of the Death Note and gave it to Misa so she could talk to her. Also Rem is female. Light, how dare you assume her sex!
“Now that I think about it, Light Yagami may be as pure as you are, Misa. Light Yagami was using the notebook not for himself but for the betterment of the human world…I can understand now why he’d want to erase those who got it in his way.”—Page 1049
Really?
I hope L becomes friends with the business-Kira because it’ll continue the trend of all his friends being Kira.
Well, that recording doesn’t really necessarily prove it was Higuchi. He could just be in contact with Kira. I mean I, as the reader, know he is but in this world’s court of law…I dunno.
I don’t know whether the author really hates Matsuda or really loves him.
“If a Death Note owner accidentally misspells a name four times, that person will be free from being killed by the Death Note. However, if they intentionally misspell the name four times, the Death Note owner will die.”—Page 1102
Harsh.
I haven’t really mentioned this but Namikawa is super attractive and he’s the only good part of this plot. I hope he sticks around.
L can fly a helicopter, apparently. And Watari has a sniper, interesting.
“Wedy: Do you ever loosen up? Mr. Yagami: Nope.”—Page 1158
I love him. Aw, and he took the bullet for Wedy. Such a good guy.
Thank god for all this exposition about what Aizawa was doing.
WATARI SHOT THE GUN OUT OF HIGUCHI’S HAND! HE JUST BECAME A TOTAL BADASS!
“There are male and female gods of death, but it is neither permitted, nor possible for them to have sexual relations with humans. The gods of death also cannot have sex with each other.”—Page 1178
And on the day that this was published millions of fanfic writers wept.
Oh shit Mr. Yagami touched the Death Note and now he can see Rem. This is not going to be good for his heart.
That’s clever using a collage of images from previous books.
“I’ve won…”—Page 1195
My god. That’s terrifying but also I’m so glad that Light has the Death Note back. He’s a really boring character when he’s not INSANE.

The
queen is back and I’m so freaking happy <3
‘annoyed’ nothing you say is annoying ok, I’m actually just really relieved and happy that I’m helping in any way at all. Also you listen to my rambling all the time and you supported me with my anxiety (you have no idea how much our convos helped after I first saw a doctor about it and was feeling really confused about what to do) so ‘what did I do to deserve you’ is probably what I should be saying to you.
Tbh when things are as serious as you’ve described then you’re definitely not overreacting. Like I said before, I’m always ready to listen/talk when you need to. And you don’t have to stress about replies; I honestly don’t mind at all as long as you’re ok.
Thank you Queen Luna you’re the best ;-;
Also, good news and bad news:
Bad news- A bit after I sent the last message mom apparently found out about Tumblr and decided that I probably shouldn’t get an account here because of all the NSFW content. I get why she’s worried so I guess I won’t be getting an account here for a while.
Good news- HOWEVER, I was chatting with someone on ao3 and they asked if we could move our convo somewhere else. They recommended something called Discord so I got an account there. If you’ve never heard of Discord it’s basically a voice and text chat system usually used by gamers, but it seems to be pretty popular among non-gamers too. PMing is possible there :D (The only flaw is that you can’t send very long messages, so you have to send multiple short ones, which is a bit annoying…but otherwise it’s pretty neat so maybe we can try it if you’re ok with that?)
XD yeah that’s actually pretty accurate.
*reads Luna’s message*
*inhale*
UM. DO YOU HAvE ANY IDEA HOW AMAZING YOU ARE. LET ME TRY TO BE A GOOD, SUPPORTIVE FRIEND AND TELL YOU
Yep it was one of the grossest things that ever happened to me OTL I’m still swimming but I’m taking a long break right now- a break that started because my little sister broke her toe and we were basically stuck at home taking care of her (the pool is a bit far for me to go on my own so if mom’s stuck at home so am I), and then got longer because the pool’s old and some things had to be ‘fixed’, and then got even longer because my coach is getting married (just reread that and realized that I sound super annoyed, I’m actually not, I have no problem with my coach getting married XD). I’ll probably start again around next month, though :)
Thanks ^^
Oooh are you a comic fan??? I haven’t read any superhero comics because there seem to be so many AUs(?)/different timelines so trying to figure out where to start is really confusing, plus I actually sorta prefer manga/manhwa art styles (not that wester comics are bad- a lot of them have really good art too, I just personally prefer the manga/manhwa styles (especially for the panels). Also the ecchi-ish costumes/anatomy for almost every single female superhero gets a bit ridiculous sometimes lol). Some of them seem really fun, though, and I’d like to try them out someday…
It’s really cool that you’ve been a fan of T'challa for so long, it must’ve been even more exciting to see him in the movie :D
Imagine everyone watching The Winter Soldier together. Then the  'brainwashed bucky’ scenes start.
Illumi: *stares intently at the screen*
Illumi: I see no problem with this.
Watching Civil War and Leorio goes Dad Mode and covers Gon’s and Killua’s eyes when Hisoka starts making…innappropriate…noises during the fight scenes
(Hisoka low-key writing reader insert lemons about various MCU heroes. Most likely Natasha (because she’s a lot like Machi, his only female crush so far), Bruce (how Hisoka would love to unleash the beast), Thor (he’s a literal GOD imagine how badly he could mess Hisoka up *schwing*), Wanda, and Vision (he probably liked Loki too before Loki got beat up by the Hulk and Hisoka was like ‘oh I have a new senpai’)
Then Illumi gets Milluki (his tech genius little brother) to hack into Hisoka’s computer for info and is like 'what is this Hisoka I do not understand why you derive pleasure from this trash’)
Everyone thinks Gon should relate to Tony on a personal level but he doesn’t, because despite being a sunshine angel he’s also a freaking weird kid who doesn’t hate Ging. At all. (Though that might have something to do with the fact that he doesn’t even consider Ging his parent in the first place; he never even calls him 'dad’ or 'my father’)
Killua, on the other hand, relates to Bucky a bit too much and thinks HYDRA is basically the Zoldyck family.
Everybody’s Team Cap except for Illumi, who’s Team Iron Man (“Why would you want to break the rules?”), and then Hisoka randomly shows up like 'Team Hulk ;)’
Every time Howard Stark is mentioned everyone just stares at Ging, who shifts uncomfortably
(Yeah did I tell you about the time Leorio punched Ging for being a trash dad?)
OMG. Thank you for that. I’ve seen a lot of 'Hisoka as the clown from the 'It’ movie’ posts on tumblr but never any fanart for that idea. Run, Gon. Run.
I’m considering teaching myself to animate just to make those animatics XD
(Also, random thing: it’s Chuseok over here (basically like the Korean version of Thanksgiving, I guess?) and usually, people recieve money from older relatives during holidays like this in Korea. I got about 80 dollars (50 from my maternal grandparents, 10 from my paternal grandfather and 20 from my uncle) so I’m debating on what to spend it on: It’s either a tablet so I can learn how to do digital art (I’m thinking about polishing my drawing skills for a while and then making a webcomic. My parents support this so they’re willing to pay a little extra for a tablet) or a ukulele (I like the piano but I realized a while ago that it’d be great to have an instrument that I can carry around, so I did some research and the ukulele seems good. I really like the sound so I’m willing to put some effort into learning it). Idk which one I should choose, though. Technically the tablet should be my priority but I also like the ukulele…
(and idek why I mentioned this either, guess the talk about animating reminded me of the tablet lol))
I thrive on angst. Tragedy fuels me. (But tbh HxH is a LOT darker than I was prepared for. I’m currently shipping an ant king with a genius human girl and I know from spoilers that they’re both going to die)
Yeah, she’s alive :D but apparently Kaneki is now 'dead’ (though I don’t think he is really, if Ishida kills him off now (after all the stuff with Hide? All the character development Ken hasn’t gotten yet? When he still hasn’t talked about anything with Shuu or Hinami or even Akira?) and gives us a new protagonist or something I might finally rage-quit this series.
Or not, since with all the Touken stuff and Kaneki being sorta insensitive ever since he became the OEK…maybe a new protagonist is what we need?). I was liking all the parallels with Arima in the first series until this, because it was just…um. I think my main problem with the whole thing is the freakng PACING because it just feels so clunky and awkward. This is probably one of those chapters that will be really good if Ishida somehow manages to connect it with the next chapters and has everything make sense later, but if he doesn’t do it well it’s going to suck forever OTL
At least TG finally confirmed Naki’s death, though. I mean, the ideal situation for me is if he never died in the first place, but at least a confirmed death is better than Ishida suddenly bringing him back to life after that panel with Yamori. And his death scene was handled well. (Now please just tell me that he, Kanae and Hairu aren’t coming back as Kanou-Furuta zombies and I will be semi-satisfied)
Also AOT if you haven’t read the new chapter yet spoilers but
(The-Reiner-Eren reunion I HAVE WAITED SO. LONG FOR THIS
Also Eren’s grandad ;-;
And maybe we’ll finally be seeing Annie again soon since she’s been appearing in so many flashbacks and Reiner’s probably going to ask about her if he and Eren get to actually talk
Love those hints about something finally starting to change
ANOTHER PERSON FROM MIKASA’S CLAN? I hope we see this lady again, she’s lovely
I can’t believe how much the art has improved, it actually looks GOOD now 0.0)
Aw, that’s ok! I’ll be looking forward to seeing it when you get a new skirt :D
Yeah, I’m really excited for OC’s name too…must be something important if they’re keeping it hidden for this long. I guess it’s French (or a word from some other non-English language) since 'Ciel’ is French for 'Sky’…and it probably has a meaning related to the sky since they’re twins. Idk. Maybe it’s the word for 'star’ ('etoile’) since stars are also a big thing in this arc?
Looking forward to your reaction! I haven’t read the novel yet but from what I know it sounds great :D (also I cannot resist the L + Naomi duo even if they never actually interacted in manga/anime canon)
Btw, is it ok if I ask how far you’ve gotten with the DN anime?
(Also fun fact: Ryuk was originally designed to look like a handsome young man (an 'attractive rock star’, in the words of DN’s creators. You can find a pic of his original design on google). His design was changed because the creators felt like he was overshadowing Light XD
But also, I just found a post on tumblr that said Takeshi Obata (DN’s artist) mentioned that Ryuk’s face in canon could just be a mask to hide his true appearance…which means that he could technically still look like that in canon. Wow. I actually think I have the book where it says Obata mentioned that, I have to go and check it now lol)
Watch it if you dare and prepare to weep over all the wasted potential, because now that I read/watch more about it I guess the saddest thing is that it COULD have been great. I mean, like I said, the visuals are REALLY good, L’s actor could have been a good L if not for the bad script, Ryuk’s actor/design were also super great (it’s just his role in the movie and his motivations they messed up ;-;)…
I don’t watch Avatar (I’d like to when I have the time, though, because it seems like a great show) but I’ve heard of that movie and tbh I can’t even.
Ty :D (Ayy the queen said I’d make a cute Peridot *fangirls*
You’re also my closest friend right now and I love talking to you so much <3 thank you for everything Luna.)
See this is why you’re awesome. Thank you so much ;-; (and what, did Queen Luna mention me to her parents. Did I make a good impression. Omg. (jk, jk lol))
Also: I’d like to rec a song to you, it’s called 'Lovely’ by Twenty One Pilots :D
Oh look I actually replied within a week :’)
OK ILL START W DISORD BC IM EXCITE. I already have one, from a while ago, my # is 5773! So add me whenever you want ^^ ((But please just send me a short message here, cause I turned notifs off for it, so i can turn them on again ^^)) Well, uh, here’s the thing about short messages.  If a site/app has an instant message feature, you can bet I’ll be the one to split a sentence into 10 separate messages for dramatic effect… So, uh, prepare to have 42 new messages instead of like 4 waiting when you open the app ^^
I never ever ever have any problems with listening to you. I just appreciate you’re comfortable enough with me to be able to come to me. Honestly, I truly appreciate you in my life, especially considering that you can always reassure me with your words ^^ Truly a writer’s talent :p
Well, I’m going to a psychologist soon, so we’ll see what they’ll say. Idk tho, I dont think I even care anymore. I just want this stomach thing to pass as soon as possible.
Ouch, I hope your sister is better now… I’ve never broken anything so I wouldn’t know the feeling. Aww, coaches getting married is actually the cutest thing ever XD My archery coach got married a few years back and she was practically glowing.  Ah, if you don’t mind me asking, do you have a particular stroke you specialise in or do you just swim everything?
I could say the same about comic/manga styles. Tbh, I don’t really consider myself a comic fan? When I was a kid, I used to buy the children’s comics to ward off boredom, but never really continued after I got into reading actual books. Black Panther happened to be among those comics and I remembered him when they mentioned T’Challa in CW. I wonder if i still have those old comics somewhere… But yeah, i was pretty excited when they mentioned him XD
That viewing actually sounds amazing… I get the feeling they’d all want to do an in depth analyzation of the characters? (But idk i don’t really know the characters that well) except for Hisoka, who’s probably just schwinging around being creepy per usual. I’m torn between wanting to read those lemons and just backing the fuck away…. Probably read like a paragraph and then set everything on fire. Yeah, that sounds good.
I presume you’re not gonna watch IT? Random, but i thought of it bc of the fanart… Tbh I won’t watch it either. I’ve never watched a single horror movie in my life and i intend to keep it that way. Unless you count Coraline as horror, which I actually would in some ways? Idk tho, that movie traumatised me. Not even joking when I say I occasionally have nightmares related to it. Advice; if you haven’t, DO NOT WATCH CORALINE. Don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s a cartoon. I mean 9 is a cartoon, but it’s also freaking dark. HAPPY TREE FRIENDS IS A CARTOON AND I WOULDNT TOUCH THE VIDEOS WITH A 9 FOOT POLE.  Long story short, cartoons are not a joke.
For some reason I confused the Ukulele with a Lute and was like ‘I’m not gonna judge, but… why?’ then i actually googled it and realised I’m an idiot.  But, um, I can’t say anything other than it’s your choice and you should do whatever would make you happier? There’s that trick of throwing a penny in the air and if you’re disappointed when it lands heads/tails, you know you want the other one. Idk, tho, both options sound equally nice!
… HxH gets weirder every time you tell me about it
KANEKI IS WHAT NOW Um, okay then.... alrighty...
guess who dropped TG again
WELL FUCK IM SCREAMING ABOUT THE NEW CHAPTER WHOAH EREN’T GRAMPA WHOAH THE REUNION However, the best part is Reiner acting like a dad during the festival
Oooh Etoile would be interesting!
I’m still at the ep where L dies ;-; I haven’t had the time to move forward, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to watch some during this weekend
Well, uh. My mom came into my room while I was writing this and had to ask me why i was crying (I’m pretty sure she thought I was having one of my all-time-lows again). The reason why I was actually crying? The song. Words can’t express my gratitude. I’d download it, but tbh I feel like I’ll start ugly sobbing again every time I listen to it...
random note, i started going to school by train! It’s actually a lot nicer than the bus and cheaper XD Idk why i put this here but yay

Netflix’s Death Note: Cont’ Chat Logs
After a brief intermission I end up just “liveblogging” my reactions to aiko (matt-chan). I tried to cut out any filler and make this as cohesive as possible while also not spoiling much. Under cut because this is also long.
[8/25/2017 5:25:24 AM] ryuzaki: i was originally gonna watch this then watch it again and write notes but idk if i can watch this more than once [8/25/2017 5:25:34 AM] matt-chan: Dud3 i prob can [8/25/2017 5:25:51 AM] matt-chan: Its so bad but i keep watching - [8/25/2017 5:38:23 AM] ryuzaki: if watari is the chubby japanese man can i just say [8/25/2017 5:38:29 AM] ryuzaki: him and L saved me [8/25/2017 5:40:18 AM] ryuzaki: oh shit nevermind watari lookin weird but at least they got the inventor part of him right - [8/25/2017 5:45:08 AM] ryuzaki: they made L messy? i dont understand [8/25/2017 5:45:17 AM] ryuzaki: I like him except for that fact - [8/25/2017 5:46:24 AM] ryuzaki: [goes back to light n mia] i forget why did i hate them [they immediately speak] oh Thats why - [8/25/2017 5:49:02 AM] ryuzaki: also ive been laughing at how accurate the watari giving soichiro(?) an ice cream cone is [8/25/2017 5:49:07 AM] ryuzaki: thats literally the best part of this [8/25/2017 5:49:14 AM] matt-chan: WATARI IS THE BEST [8/25/2017 5:49:47 AM] ryuzaki: him and L save this. they arent perfect but if they were the star of the show id watch it and be able to stomach it [8/25/2017 5:51:51 AM] matt-chan: Yes - [8/25/2017 5:54:23 AM] ryuzaki: Light and L dont have any interaction before this newscast.. Light doesnt even know who he is (soichiro never even mentioned him and it was alluded to that L isn't very well known to even law enforcement) why was light so angry? why would he care about who this was? [8/25/2017 5:57:00 AM] ryuzaki: oh okay they ask about him after...... but i still dont get why they chose this route..? did mia know who he was? it wouldve been better shot if he was watching the news to write more people down and all the channels got interrupted by the conference. [8/25/2017 5:59:56 AM] ryuzaki: the importance of the scene in the manga was that L realized he had a pattern of when he killed people and made sure his broadcast was on during the time light would be watching the news, then to prove his name/face theory he put lind L taylor up on the screen with his full face and name revealed and made him kill him, only for L to start talking and direct his message towards light then (with only the L logo and a voice changer broadcasting), taking an educated gamble on if light could kill whoever he wanted without those two things. [8/25/2017 6:00:03 AM] ryuzaki: im hung up on this scene........................... but anyway - [8/25/2017 6:00:26 AM] matt-chan: Im just mad about L not having a voice changer [8/25/2017 6:00:41 AM] ryuzaki: YEAH that was so odd.... - [8/25/2017 6:01:18 AM] ryuzaki: light isnt even light
[8/25/2017 6:02:57 AM] ryuzaki: like him and mia arent even relatively close to their original characters so it feels like im watching two people named similarly but otheriwse have no connection. part of me hates them but the other part of me is like "lol well why are you even mad, they basically just made a new spinoff character" [8/25/2017 6:04:15 AM] matt-chan: I have a feeling this will end differently [8/25/2017 6:04:21 AM] matt-chan: They cut a lot of the story already [8/25/2017 6:04:29 AM] matt-chan: Its just a summary /spin off [8/25/2017 6:05:56 AM] ryuzaki: they havent really went into the detail of lights stradegies.. like theyre talking about light going quiet because raye penber(?) is following them and say not to fuck around with the dn but that would be obvious.......... thats one of the main things theyd be looking for [8/25/2017 6:06:24 AM] ryuzaki: nowhere in this story have they shown their light as smart besides doing basic algebra in the first two minutes [8/25/2017 6:06:37 AM] ryuzaki: also true i was thinking honestly L may win [8/25/2017 6:06:46 AM] ryuzaki: Like be alive and win - [8/25/2017 6:07:08 AM] matt-chan: No [8/25/2017 6:07:20 AM] matt-chan: This movie is finally finished for me I am Livid (note: not done with the movie. at a particular scene with Watari) - [8/25/2017 6:07:20 AM] ryuzaki: i dont think the wammy boys are in this tbh. with the whole not being able to see ryuk they already took away a large chunk of the ending [8/25/2017 6:08:33 AM] ryuzaki: wheres rem. wheres my saving grace girl - [8/25/2017 6:09:30 AM] ryuzaki: mia: i was the right one, not you light, the smart one: oh fuck lol [8/25/2017 6:10:24 AM] matt-chan: HAHAHAHAHAHA [8/25/2017 6:10:28 AM] matt-chan: “theres so many fucking rules” [8/25/2017 6:10:44 AM] ryuzaki: they really show that these are kids. like....... "i was thinking we could make some popcorn and write some names down" like........... do you want me to take this seriously.......... theyre like 12. they arent trying to change the world theyre just some kids who thinks killing people is fun. - [8/25/2017 6:11:58 AM] ryuzaki: also all i can imagine is lights dad walking in the door at some point and wondering why the house occasionally is littered with apple cores - [8/25/2017 6:13:25 AM] ryuzaki: ohh so she took the death note im guessing [8/25/2017 6:13:47 AM] ryuzaki: my issue is how did she get the names????? [8/25/2017 6:14:37 AM] ryuzaki: im waiting for this movie to end without ever knowing how L dies because they just kill him without revealing his name/how they found it [8/25/2017 6:15:32 AM] ryuzaki: he blames ryuk.. why would ryuk do this.. [8/25/2017 6:19:20 AM] ryuzaki: i... dont get this movie at all... there is so much to talk about... so many issues... why would L be out in public during this time, why is ryuk the bad guy, why is light so emotional, why is light so STUPID (yet considered smart in the story?) - [8/25/2017 6:20:04 AM] matt-chan: I am upset [8/25/2017 6:20:05 AM] ryuzaki: why would soichiro go out in public and do this... is this how they find out who kira is? because he wont kill his dad? the real light would kill his dad [8/25/2017 6:20:08 AM] matt-chan: I am. More livit [8/25/2017 6:20:17 AM] ryuzaki: im so fuckin worried by that [8/25/2017 6:20:40 AM] ryuzaki: i feel like youre hard to get angry with this kinda thing - [8/25/2017 6:21:00 AM] matt-chan: AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA [8/25/2017 6:21:07 AM] matt-chan: IM IN TEARS BUT [8/25/2017 6:21:09 AM] matt-chan: IM SAD [8/25/2017 6:21:11 AM] matt-chan: AND LAUGJING - [8/25/2017 6:27:40 AM] ryuzaki: why did L show his face and make an incredibly public scene while talking about kira..... its not as bad as the rest of the things in this movie but its still questionable. if they werent making a scene about kira id let it pass - [8/25/2017 6:29:12 AM] ryuzaki: WATARI ISNT HIS REAL NAME YOU FUCKING IDIOT - [8/25/2017 6:30:29 AM] matt-chan: I finished it (note: now she means the movie) [8/25/2017 6:31:07 AM] ryuzaki: he didnt even have him call a burner phone. if L finds the notebook wouldnt this be even more damning evidence that light is kira (that is, if he doesnt burn the page) [8/25/2017 6:31:12 AM] ryuzaki: dont spoil please - [8/25/2017 6:34:29 AM] ryuzaki: nnnnnn [8/25/2017 6:42:03 AM] ryuzaki: ohhhhhhhh the normal people scare me in his locker with the ahs font im So Embarrassed. - [8/25/2017 6:43:01 AM] ryuzaki: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo (note: my reaction to the same scene with Watari) - [8/25/2017 6:45:51 AM] ryuzaki: oh how interesting they DO say how she does it with the fbi task force [8/25/2017 6:46:31 AM] ryuzaki: HOLY SHIT..... MIA IS EVIL.............................. [8/25/2017 6:46:45 AM] ryuzaki: "THERES SO MANY FUCKING RULES" [8/25/2017 6:48:57 AM] ryuzaki: omg i hope he ends up dyingggggggg i hope she does too - [8/25/2017 6:49:59 AM] ryuzaki: L Cant Fuckin Drive - [8/25/2017 6:50:48 AM] ryuzaki: apparently this is the version of death note where everyone has Too Many emotions [8/25/2017 6:52:43 AM] ryuzaki: also this is so fucking stupid the chase is making me laugh why did they do this - [8/25/2017 6:54:00 AM] ryuzaki: OHHH DUDE I HATE THISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS [8/25/2017 6:54:11 AM] ryuzaki: WHAT A CHEAP FUCKING TACTIC (note: a scene with light and L) - [8/25/2017 6:57:57 AM] matt-chan: Bahahaha [8/25/2017 6:58:03 AM] matt-chan: The song they played on the ferris wheel (few minutes later) [8/25/2017 7:03:34 AM] ryuzaki: AHAHA THE SONG [8/25/2017 7:05:35 AM] ryuzaki: OH THIS IS SO FUCKING STUPID - [8/25/2017 7:02:14 AM] ryuzaki: is the moral of this story that you should never trust high school romance..... cause thats what im getting - [8/25/2017 7:09:02 AM] ryuzaki: i like how he was i guess in a coma and his dad comes in and doesnt fucking care he woke up [8/25/2017 7:09:14 AM] ryuzaki: like hes just awake n his dads like [shrug] - [8/25/2017 7:15:41 AM] ryuzaki: okay so it just ended and honestly the only issue with the ending was not knowing if L wrote Lights name down [8/25/2017 7:16:06 AM] ryuzaki: just because its like. Well i dont fucking know what he'd do, your L and the original L end up very different at the half way mark [8/25/2017 7:16:34 AM] ryuzaki: but if they kept things completely new like they did near the end i think it wouldve been interesting [8/25/2017 7:17:32 AM] ryuzaki: the main issue is that i couldnt enjoy it because it was clearly labled as a reboot to the original story, and not another one that happens in the same universe as the death note one (where the death note exists that is) [8/25/2017 7:18:39 AM] ryuzaki: if they had made a whole new story and just had the death note in it and new people, maybe at the most keep ryuk in if you really want a reoccurring character, it would be not great but a fun watch

crossover between yugioh and death note? plz?
Oh boy… I’ve been waiting for something like this! *cracks knuckles*
Whipped this up tonight, sorry it’s short and I didn’t do any editing. I’m still writing Part IV of my ongoing story “Vices” right now, so I don’t want to distract myself too much. Also, I’ve never done a crossover before. I hope this wasn’t horrible XD

“A God You Are Not” - by Atemusluckygal
The tall, slender, sharp-dressedgraduate of To-oh University towered confidently over his adversary—a muchshorter man clothed in some hideous scene-punk leather getup, a wildly colorfuland unkempt hairstyle, and a gaudy pendant dangling over his torso to completethe juvenile picture. The graduate’s irises, burning a bloodthirsty crimson, peered through combed brown bangs to meet the cold stare of the opposite’s pairof regal violet eyes with equal tenacity.
“Do you really think you’rea god, Light?” asked the short man with ridiculous hair. His voice wassurprisingly low for someone of his apparent age and size, perhaps fatherly buthad a judgmental edge to it; his diction was formal and refined, making himsound even more condescending.
Light pondered his nextwords very carefully, spinning the well-oiled gears of his talented mind. Wasit the right time and circumstance to freely admit and acknowledge his secretpersona as Kira? How did this man even know about that? He didn’t know anything about Light, or Kira for thatmatter. Who was he to judge or to lecture? He was a fool—if he really did know who Kira was, he’d be coweringin fear and trying to protect his life at all costs.
After all, a small fragmentof a blank page from the magic notebook waited patiently in the secret latch ofhis rigged wristwatch, ready to serve as a blank easel for his next fatalmasterpiece; it would be too easy. The moron didn’t have the slightest clue howprecariously close he was to a fatal heart attack. Or, perhaps, anunfortunately-timed semi-truck steered by an inattentive driver…
A wide, sinister smile slashedacross his lips. “Of course not.”
Light figured the best wayto conduct himself was to remain soft-spoken and vague to the best of hisability, at least until he had a name to hold for ransom. The less hevolunteered information of himself and his schemes, the better. Although, itmattered little; Light was internally reeling in anticipation of watching thisman exchange his smug grin for an open mouth gasping for air, a still-backedconfident figure crumpling pathetically to the ground, his heart palpitating violentlyuntil his last dying breath. At this point, he didn’t care what this man knew,or even how he knew. He would surely die, and Kira would continue his reignunimpeded.
The spiky-haired teenagerfolded his arms, erecting a pillar of pride that sought to exaggerate his heightand stature. “I know what you are, Light Yagami. Or do you prefer, ‘Kira’?”
Light narrowed his eyes, choosing not to respond. So he didknow.
“You’re a child, Light. Aviolent, immature, greedy child who was given too much power and not enoughguidance. Your twisted sense of ‘justice’ you impose on the world… it’s nothingmore than a self-serving ascension to the highest hilltop, to govern peopleusing fear and threat to cripple them into submission. Does that sound like a‘god of justice’ to you?”
Light scowled outwardlybefore he could contain himself. The arroganceof this man! His blood simmered with hatred growing more intense by the second. The world was rotting from terrible people and their crimes, and he had beenchosen to wield the weapon that would be the end-all solution to the world’stroubles! He, not this imbecileinsulting him so callously!
“You have no idea whatyou’re talking about,” spat Light, “Kira seeks to cleanse the world of crime,to create a new world. A betterworld, where only kind and honest people live! Don’t you understand, you fool?Kira is justice! How dare you tarnish Kira’s dream!” Anger shook his voice andbreath, searing through the polite and composed exterior he normally frontedwith ease.
His opponent simply stoodthere, unmoving without so much as a slightest quirk of his eyebrow, as hepatiently waited for Light to stabilize. For someone who could so easily bewiped from the earth by a few quick pen strokes, he didn’t show any sign offear or regret.
“What a childish way to seethe world,” was the irritatingly calm response. “For someone so intelligent, you are tragically ignorant. You are not creating a new world, Light. What you are creating, however, is an ever-risingdeath toll to serve your horribly misguided concept of right and wrong.” Thoseunblinking purple eyes pierced straight into Light’s. “You are not justice, andyou certainly aren’t any god. You areevil.”
That word… ‘evil’. When usedto describe him, Light hated that word almost as much as he hated the conceptof evil itself. Misguided? On the contrary. Light was the enlightened one, witha clear vision for the world’s future utopia, and anyone who stood in his waywould only meet the same fate as the criminals they defend. His fists clenchedtightly.
“Do you want to die?” spat Light. His rage was becoming harder to control.“Kira is not evil… Kira is getting ridof evil! Kira is justice!”
Light turned to the left, regarding a tall, monster-esque figure only he could see. A Shinigami, a God ofDeath.
“Ryuk, tell me this man’sname!” Light demanded. “I must know! Tell me so I can kill him!” His fiststrembled with fury.
Ryuk remained expressionless,as was his usual nature. He stared back at Light. “I can’t.”
“What? What do you mean you can’t? Is it because you told me you won’tgive me anyone’s name because you’re not my ally?” Light paused to take anexasperated breath. “Listen, there’s a dozen fresh apples in it for you, justgive me his name.” He pointed to the man. “He is an enemy of Kira, an obstructerof justice, and he must die!”
To Light’s surprise, the manspoke first. “So Ryuk is your name. A God of Death, huh? Pleased to meet you,Ryuk. You can call me Yami. As you must know, that is not my real name, but itwill do for now.”
Both Ryuk and Light sharedidentical shocked expressions. “You can see me?!” implored Ryuk.
Yami touched the goldenupside-down pyramid hanging from a silver chain around his neck. It flashed alight so quickly, Light almost thought he imagined it. This was clearly noordinary man.
“You’re not the only onewith a supernatural gift in the human world, Light,” said Yami. “ThisMillennium Puzzle is several thousand years old, forged from ancient Egyptianmagic and sorcery. It is connected with my soul, and it helps me see what otherpeople cannot, amongst other things.”
Yami looked Ryuk in the eye.“No apparition or otherworldly being can hide from me. Nor can the darknessconsuming your heart, Light. Your heart is a glass case, and I can see theblack smoke within it.”
Light sneered. Who was this man? Had he somehow touched aDeath Note? There was no way he had such power otherwise. In any case, he hadto die, and quickly.
“Ryuk! Tell me his name!” Hedrew his left wristwatch a few inches from his chest at the ready. Hisbloodthirst heightened, his stomach sank, at the possibility of meeting anunassailable foe. Hot-boiled blood pumped through his heart and veins.
“I told you, Light,” Ryukresponded coolly, “I can’t.” He peered curiously at Yami, floating a few feetcloser to him. “Normally, my Shinigami Eyes show me the true name and lifespanof any living human, but for Yami… I can’t see anything at all! It’s completelyblank!”
Light’s eyes snapped wideopen in disbelief. “What?”
Yami simply smirked whilebeholding Light’s reaction. He folded his arms again, daring a challenge withhis eyes.
Light couldn’t believe whathe was hearing. He had seen Ryuk’s apple “withdrawal” symptoms firsthand onmultiple occasions. That was a bribe he could always count on. So, if Ryukreally couldn’t see Yami’s real name, or even lifespan…
“What are you?” Lightfinally asked, with a touch of wonder.
“A long-dead, amnesiac spirit in aborrowed body,” Yami answered, holding his smirk in place. “So long as I don’tknow my own name, neither will you. So long as my death date remains a mysteryto me, the death date of this vessel remains a mystery to you. Not even Ryuk, a real god, can end me so easily. Isn’tthat nice?”
Light lowered his wrist. “I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, but you will die,” he promised through gritted teeth. “I will find a way.”
“Then, let this be your Gameof Darkness.” Yami casually slipped his hands in his pockets, and turned on hisheel to leave. He paused, and looked back at Light and Ryuk one last time. “One morething. If you do indeed find a way to kill me while I’m in this body, before I put an end to yourreign of terror… if you’d be so kind as to tell me what my real name is, I’dreally like to know.”

Thanks for asking, anon! That was a really fun exercise!

So here was my problem with Death Note
First let me just say that it wasn’t terrible. It was actually alright. Maybe I only have this particular criticism because I watched the anime and it has been my favourite to date. And maybe, being fairly new to watching anime, I don’t have much room to provide this critique. However, in my opinion there were 3 main things wrong with this adaptation.
So here we go:
1. THEY GOT LIGHT WRONG: He’s the main character so this isn’t a great start. In this adaptation Light is at times silly and is often emotionally driven. For this reason the plot is not as compelling. Buy why?
In the anime light is (excuse my french) an arsehole. He is an awful, awful person. He is also a very highly intelligent person. Why is this important I hear you ask. Surely making him more likeable will keep us on side? Well yes but at the detriment of the story and heres why. The thing that kept me watching death note and on the edge of my seat was that I hadn’t a bloody clue what was going to happen next. Like it or not, if someone has a strong moral compass and emotional ties you can predict what they are going to do. By having light be a sociopathic genius you can never tell what is coming next and it very often shocks you how cold he can be.
His intelligence pulls you in because it takes the plot to places you couldn’t imagine. So it doesn’t matter if you like him or not because you want to know how this is all going to end. By making him more human you make his reactions and experiences more normal and strip the plot of the originality that imbues the anime.
2. THERE WAS NOONE FOR ME TO ROOT FOR: By making Light more human, Netflix actually made it harder for me to have someone to root for. Why? Even though Light was more likeable, I still didn’t like him because what he is doing is still messed up! When he was being tricked by Mia I saw it from a mile off which instantly annoyed me and made me like him less. The film wanted me to root for him but I couldn’t.
But why does that matter if I didn’t like him in the anime? Netflix Light is annoying, anime Light is loathsome. By the latter half of the anime I wanted Light to die (that sounds awful but it’s the truth!). This made me get behind L’s character so much more because as well as liking L and his quirks, I loved that he was trying to bring down a character I hated. L in the netflix adaptation is still my favourite part, but I don’t have as strong a connection to him (this is in part due to the 3rd point I will make later). By the end I didn’t really care who won or who lost because I didn’t really have an emotional investment in anyone. Not caring about how a plot turns out is not a good thing because ultimately you aren’t interested in the film.
3. YOU CAN’T DO DEATH NOTE JUSTICE IN A MOVIE:
Sorry Netflix but you were doomed from the beginning. I saw a review on my way to writing this which stated that this adaptation tried to cram too much into the 101 minute run time. I agree 100% and yet there was so much missing. We aren’t given enough time with L or Ryuk. Not enough time is dedicated to the rules in the book. Not enough time is spent on Mia. Why are these things important? Let’s start with Mia. I’m going to just put it out there: COULD NOT STAND HER. If you are going to force me to have this love interest storyline, make it worth my while. It felt like she was just killing people for fun. Honestly, she could have been a more compelling lead than Light, but what really pissed me off about her is I didn’t understand her motives. Why do you honestly want these people dead? Without the time to explain this she just came off as a privileged girl doing the most evil things out of boredom and this kind of villainy frustrates me because it is extremely surface level.
Now onto Ryuk. Ryuk felt like a prop. What was his purpose past the first act? Swiftly onto L. Part of the confusion on how we are supposed to feel about L comes from the fact that we spend next to no time with him. We don’t get an opportunity to be in awe of his intelligence or feel bad about the loss of his one relationship because no time is given to flesh these things out. Characters are the most important part of a film. They are the foundation. If you don’t take your time on them, the plot you build on them falls through. This, in my opinion, was one of the main problems that this film had.
Finally onto the rules. At one point in the film Light comments on how there are too many rules and I couldn’t help but think ‘Yeah, but that’s the point’. Twists and loopholes and plot devices are all born from the rules of the death note and these made the anime compelling. That is literally ALL OF THE INTERESTING STUFF!
Though I can see why the movie cut them out in part, I can also see why it didn’t work. The plot of Death note, though born from a simple concept, was not designed to be simple. Therefore to replicate the success of the anime you need to get clever and sometimes complex. You can’t do that in a film without losing people because you don’t have time to explain what needs to be explained. Netflix (bless their hearts) tried to get in all the essentials of the Death Note rules and do without the frills because that’s all they had time for (and even that was a stretch). However, what they failed to realise is that because of how they influence the plot, the frills make it thrilling.

The Rest of the “What If?“ Questions:
I’ve had a huge influx of “what if” alternate scenario type asks the last 2 days, and I’m not sure if they’re all from the same person or several people. I really do appreciate the interest in getting my take on this stuff! But to avoid spamming the dashboard more with all these answers I’m just going to put the rest of them into one ask here:
Tumblr media
FEM!LIGHT’S STANCE ON WOMEN:
I think she would both resent being a woman and also still look down on other women, but still be extremely confident and sure of herself on the inside. She’d probably have some internalized misogyny and still view men as superior and wish to compete with them more than with women, but she’d also resent men for being valued more highly within the patriarchal culture she was raised within, so it would be a bit of a complicated mix. She’d probably still grow up idolizing Soichiro instead of her mother, because even though Sachiko is no doubt also smart and talented she is submissive and seemingly content with carrying out her supportive, servile domestic role as a mother and a housewife. Light would probably dream of far more ambitious things for her own future with the idealistic and egotistical personality she has and all the accolades she’s gotten in her academic and athletic and social pursuits. I also think she’d be a lesbian, but that it would only really awaken in her once she met L, who would also be female in this AU, and the first woman she found genuinely fascinating and truly “worthy” of respect.
Tumblr media
HOW L WOULD CONVICT A MEMORYLESS LIGHT:
I’m not really sure. I guess L would have to get irrefutable physical evidence that proved Light had been Kira originally. Even if Light denied it the entire time he obviously could still be condemned as Kira if the evidence against him was strong enough. I think proving some of the rules fake would’ve brought L a lot closer to proving Light was guilty, but I’m a bit too lazy right now to try to think this AU scenario out the whole way through from beginning to end. It takes a lot of mental energy and revisiting of the source material to do so entirely accurately, so I definitely very much admire Ohba for keeping the canon plot so free of holes. There are always so many technical little things and different characters’ points of view to keep in mind!
Tumblr media
IF THE DEATH NOTE WAS A “LIFE NOTE” INSTEAD:
Lol, I mean I guess a Life Note would probably revive people who had already died, or something like that? That could also cause a lot of worldwide havoc, though I’m not sure it would technically be a crime to bring people back from the dead! I wonder how Light would use something like that to achieve his New World… revive all the innocent victims who had been unjustly murdered by evil criminals or something? Lol I don’t really know, my brainpower is pretty zapped for thinking these things out right now…
However, this does remind me a bit of the “Death Eraser” that was included in the original Death Note pilot chapter! Ohba initially toyed with the idea of having an eraser that went along with the notebook which would bring the Death Note victims back to life. You can find that pilot chapter online with a little Googling if you’re curious about it. I’m so glad they decided to scrap that silly idea for the actual official series, haha.
Tumblr media
HOW INNOCENT!LIGHT WOULD REACT TO MISA TELLING HIM HE IS KIRA:
@whiteroes1977 I think he would be both horrified and also know that it made sense, since he was already thinking that Kira’s ideals and methods lined up pretty closely with his own. He also thought that he would probably try to catch himself if he’d lost his Kira memories. It would definitely be a big internal struggle between Light’s desire to see himself as a good/innocent person who operates within the Law and his ego/ideals/belief that he was the only person who could truly bring about the new world he envisioned from the start. I’d love to see him have to make a big moral choice about becoming Kira again like that when he was still amnesia!Light, since he really didn’t know he was going to regain his Kira memories when he touched the Death Note in the helicopter at all.

IF SACHIKO PICKED UP THE DEATH NOTE:
Hahaha hmmm… I like to think that Sachiko is where Light gets most of his brains and also his more mysterious and sneaky side! There isn’t much to go by in canon about Sachiko’s character other than her role as a supportive and hardworking mom and housewife, but it would be very interesting if she decided to do something with a Death Note that would go totally against what everyone expects from her somehow. Maybe she’d also have a strong vigilante streak based on the frustrations she felt about Soichiro’s career; or maybe she would do something totally for herself with it and way outside of the box, and end up carrying on with this secret life that was both a guilty thrill and an escape from her humdrum duties in the home. It’s a bit hard to say without fleshing out her character a lot more than Ohba did in canon though, and I’m not really feeling up to doing that right now, sorry.
Tumblr media
WHAT IF RYUK HAD KILLED EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WAREHOUSE INSTEAD?:
I think that Light would have been very happy if Ryuk did that, and he’d have continued right on with his plans to become the God of the New World. The SPK and task force was pretty much the only thing standing in the way of him achieving this goal at this point, so he’d just see it as serving them right for defying him like that. I don’t know the exact specifics of how he would achieve actual godhood, like if he would choose to make himself a public figure as Kira or just continue to work behind the scenes forevermore? I’ve always wanted to read a really detailed and realistic AU about Light actually winning and the crazy ways the world would change, but I haven’t managed to think it out myself to any satisfying degree yet. I definitely don’t imagine it would be the idealized world he imagined though, as even if crime was completely eliminated it would be a totalitarian dictatorship under which everyone was living in constant fear and feeling very oppressed.

HOW LIGHT WOULD REACT TO MALE!MISA:
Male!Misa could be pretty interesting too, with both canon Light and fem!Light. I imagine it would still be very off-putting to Light for a guy to show up at their house and come onto them that strongly, no matter how you headcanon Light’s gender or sexuality. I guess Light wouldn’t automatically look down on male!Misa for his gender, so that might be a small advantage that male!Misa would have over female Misa. But it could also potentially work against male!Misa since Light would probably expect more from guys and find that kind of behaviour from a man extra unsettling. What i find the most interesting to think about with male!Misa is how the fandom’s reaction to the character might differ, honestly. I think male!Misa would both have way more stans and also way harsher criticism piled upon him, maybe? I think he’d be shipped a ton with the male characters as well. Certain flaws and behaviours would be treated with way more lenience and forgiveness, and then other ones would be pointed out much more harshly, as well. It’s always pretty interesting to contemplate this stuff, but unfortunately I’m a bit too tired to add a whole lot of detailed insight on the topic at this point.

So I enjoyed the Netflix Death Note Movie
I know. Unpopular opinion. I decided to look up the general consensus on it and reviews are mixed. The most vocal users loathe it for not being, more or less, an exact replica of the original. Ok, that’s cool. I super enjoyed the original as well. Was a big fan. But watching/reading it again is a chore since the majority of dialogue is internal monologue and the grab hinges on not knowing what will happen next. But I digress. The recent Power Rangers movie did the same thing in not exactly replicating the original work and it went pretty well. And I honestly don’t understand the hate this thing is getting other than the fact that people cannot get over the fact that this wasn’t intended to be the same as the original but, in fact, a re-imagining. I went in with those expectations and came out enjoying the thing, even getting so into it, I stood up and moved closer to the TV in anticipation of one part. So plot stuff with spoiler after the cut. And I’m going to be a bit tongue and cheek with a lot of the major complaints I've seen since the freakin’ thing was announced.
Just be aware that this movie is only meant to be the same in premise. If you can’t accept that, this you’ll automatically hate the movie.
Ok, so first of all, the big changes. The movie is set in America. Seattle, WA to be exact. Considering this is a Western adaption, there should be zero qualms about that. (And yet, somehow, that’s the biggest mistake for a lot of people.) Light Yagami is now Light Turner. Misa Amane is now Mia Sutton.
“But why did they have to change the names? That’s just dumb!”
Set in America should be reason enough. We’re working with Americans here. Yagami, Misa, and Amane are all Japanese names. To be fair, the naming convention in America makes the name Light a rather weird name. But the word itself is English and the name needs to relate back strongly to the main character of the source material so it gets a bye from me.
“But this is whitewashing!”
Again, set in America. Doing a quick search, I find that 76.9% of the US population considers themselves White as of July 1, 2016 according to census.gov. I mean, my research might be shoddy here, but statistically speaking, you’re going to have a white person get this notebook. Race shouldn’t even play a part in this anyway since the story is really what should matter. Yeah, they could have sent it to one of the 1.3% of the population of Seattle that is Japanese because they have that control. But what I’m saying is the race card does not matter and people were and still are grasping for any reason they can to say the movie is bad, even before giving it a watch.
Also, let’s take a look at L and Watari. In the original, Watari was definitely European, which is where Wammy’s House was located, iirc. L’s race is also not completely Asian in the original. The author has gone on record to say he thinks of him as a quarter each of Japanese, Russian, English, and French or Italian. Here, Watari looks full Japanese and L is African in descent. It kind of makes the whitewashing argument silly when the only two white guys in the original are the only two non-white mains in the movie. So again, race should not be considered an issue here.
Now, as far as the whole thing plays out, the movie itself is self-contained, though, in my opinion, open to a sequel should they decide to. Light is no longer the stand-up shining beacon of perfection as a student he was in the anime. Instead, he’s this somewhat socially awkward teen who sells homework to those willing to pay. His mother was killed in a drunk driving accident as well, which feeds into his desire to kill those who deserve it later in the movie. As far as setup goes, I’m cool with this. This adaption makes Light feel more human. Shoot, when he meets Ryuk for the first time, the boy is screaming his head off as he tries to get away - a perfectly natural reaction.
Mia, on the other hand, doesn’t have a ton of evidence towards her social status, but she’s definitely not an idol like Misa in the original. She’s just one of Light’s classmates. The relationship between the two has a different dynamic as well, with Light seen watching her in the early moments of the movie and stepping in to protect her during a confrontation with some bullies. It’s obvious that Light has had a crush on her for a while. When Light proves the power of the Death Note to her, Mia becomes enamored with the idea and the two essentially become Kira as the movie goes on. And the girl really gets off on using the Death Note. Literally.
The other big player is L. As opposed to the original, where he stayed locked up in a room 99% of the time, this version of L actively visits crime scenes and works around those in his team. He keeps his face hidden and even is willing to make public broadcasts in person to call out Kira. And yes, he has an affinity for sweets still. Later in the movie, when Watari becomes a pawn of Kira and L realizes this, L starts becoming emotionally unhinged. I find myself liking this version of L more than the original given he plays a more active role in his plans and, again, feels more human than the original.
So the biggest change, to me, is Light’s reluctance to use the Death Note. His first act is killing a bully, with Ryuk pushing him to do it. The second is the man who killed his mother, again with Ryuk pushing him along. Third is when he starts latching onto the idea when he proves the power of the Death Note to Mia by killing a man taking his family hostage. But again, this is a thought pushed onto Light by Mia. Light allows himself to be manipulated by Mia as they both become Kira, using the Note as a sort of foreplay. It’s weird. Definitely unnecessary.
However, even when Light becomes aware of being tailed by FBI agents, he refuses to use the Note on them, even as Mia pushes him to do so. He refuses to cross the line of killing innocents, even at a level self-preservation. Instead, Mia steals a page form the Note, attacks the FBI agent following Light, and has him write down the whole team’s names. Later in the movie, Light uses the Note on Watari to control him. The Death Note has a lot of new rules introduced in the movie, including one Light wishes to use on Watari: If a person whose name is in the Death Note is still alive, the page with their name can be burned to spare them. Ryuk makes it clear, however, that only one person can be saved like this.
Light has Watari hunt down L’s real name through use of the Note. However, Mia steals this page without Light’s knowledge, allowing Watari to die. Mia also left a message in the Note for Light at this point as well. “Light Turner’s heart stops beating at midnight.” She uses this as leverage to get Light to pass ownership of the Note to her as she would have to be the one to burn the page.
Light manages to double-cross her in a final play that allows him to kill Mia, save himself, and get the Note back into his possession all while throwing investigators off his trail. That is, except for L who manages to find the page Mia stole in her room.
The movie ends with L debating on putting Light’s name on the page.
The movie is a huge over-simplification of the original series. But I don’t see this as a bad thing. I found the movie enjoyable, though a little hammy at parts. Mia subtly pulling Light’s strings under the pretense of romance definitely isn’t true to the original and could have been handled a little better at the very least. Light being unwilling to kill innocents makes me side with him more than the Light in the anime. (I always thought Light’s biggest mistake was letting his god-complex kill Lind L. Taylor.) The way L was presented made him a more likable and relatable character. Overall, the story itself was good and I came away pleased with the adaption. Was it perfect? No, not by a long shot. Was it better than the majority of anime fans said it was going to be? Definitely. It’s nowhere near as bad as, say, Dragonball Evolution. I had fun with it and really, that’s what matters with a movie.
And as far as a sequel goes, there’s leeway for L to stop himself from taking revenge on Light with the Note still. And with Mia dead, Light can now function as Kira in his own way. I’d be very interested in seeing a sequel with this setup.
Anyway, that’s my take on the new Death Note movie. I know my opinion is unpopular. But hey, that’s just my opinion.

Death Note review~
Okay so before we get into the review, I just want to warn you guys that I haven’t written many reviews so don’t be surprised if this is a disorganized mess. I’ll try to gather my thoughts the best I can but I can’t make any promises.
Anyways, I finished Death Note last weekend and I thought I’d share my thoughts! Death Note is a very well known show, and I’d heard of it before I ever got into anime. The concept seemed pretty interesting to me, but my judgmental idea of anime combined with my absolute loathing of subtitles stopped me from ever getting around to it. I finally caved in and watched it, and I’m so glad I did!
I’ll include a brief explanation of the plot as well as a spoiler-free section in case any of you haven’t watched it. After that I’ll get into some of my more spoiler filled thoughts later.
Basically, one day a bored “god of death” named Ryuk drops a magical notebook into the human world to see what will happen. This notebook, known as the Death Note, will kill anyone whose name is written inside. The notebook is found by an average high school student named Light Yagami. It doesn’t take long for him to start using the notebook’s abilities to do what he believes is the right thing. He decides to use the notebook to kill criminals and create a crime-free utopian world. The story follows Light as he tries to evade being caught by the police, led by his father and a detective named L, while enacting his plan.
This show does a really good job of twisting the plot in directions I wasn’t expecting. As I mentioned before, the concept of a killer notebook seemed interesting to me, but I was skeptical if the show could keep its intrigue for 37 episodes. A couple episodes in and it felt like Light was already caught. However, the close game of cat and mouse between Light and L is what kept me hooked for so long. I was always on the edge of my seat, waiting for Light to slip up one too many times and be caught by L. Another thing I found very interesting was Light’s descent into madness as his god complex grew as the story progressed. Light went from being an average teenager to a serial killer frighteningly fast, and I loved watching him struggle to keep his “normal kid” persona intact.
Another thing I liked about the show was actually something that made me hesitate to watch it in the first place. Anime is known for being over dramatic at times, and I’d seen people point to Death Note as an example of this. Many scenes, particularly the potato chip scene (you probably know the one even if you haven’t watched this show), seemed tiresome at first. I absolutely adore them now, and I think that the intensity and drama of scenes like the potato chip scene really add to the show.
I can’t really go into depth about the things I didn’t like about the show without spoiling some things, but I’ll try to sum things up the best I can. The later episodes did seem to drag a little bit, and from what I’ve heard many people agree with me on this. That’s not to say that they were awful, but there was definitely a drop in quality for the last twelve or so episodes. Another thing I didn’t like was the female characters, especially Misa. Her entire character revolved around her obsessive love for Light. All she seemed to do was get manipulated into doing his bidding. Overall, it felt like she was just in the story for fanservice, and her obnoxious personality was rather irritating at times. One of the few other female characters, Kiyomi Takada, also had a similar problem. Her entire character revolved around her loyalty and adoration of Light; she seemed to have no story of her own without him. I’ll go over more things I disliked in the spoiler section, but that’s all for now.
Other than those problems, the show was pretty great! I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who likes intense shows like this. It’s on Netflix if you haven’t watched it, so go check it out!
Now I’ll be getting into some spoilers, so proceed with caution!
As I mentioned before, there definitely seemed to be a change in quality around episode 25, namely due to L’s death. He was always my favorite character, and when I realized that he was going to die I was somewhat disappointed. As for Near, he felt like a cheaper version of L. He wasn’t completely awful, though. I liked seeing him succeed in places that L failed, but it almost seemed like the writers regretted killing L and they wanted to bring him back in a way. There was a point where Near said something along the lines of “there’s a 7% chance that Light is Kira,” and I actually had to close my computer and take a deep breath because of that (is it normal to feel such a burning rage towards a fictional character?). Despite how emotionless L was at times, Near was much colder and calmer than him, which is why he was able to catch Light in the end. His character wasn’t completely awful, but he felt like a cheap addition to the story at times.
I want to talk about the ending and the last episode, because I have a lot of thoughts on that. From episode 1, I could tell that Light was going to die at the end of the show, so it was no surprise when he actually did. I was, however, pleasantly surprised at how undramatic his death scene was. For a show that overemphasizes mundane things like eating chips and playing tennis, I was expecting some grand monologue from Light accompanied by him dying in the most exaggerated way imaginable. I was definitely not expecting him to die silently in a stairwell from a heart attack, though it felt very poetic that Light was killed by the Death Note in the end.
In regards to the actual events that lead up to his death, I really liked how one tiny slip up on Light’s part led to his downfall. It really made me think about how differently the story would have gone if small details had been changed early on. Would Light have never been caught or would he have been discovered much sooner? Intriguing questions like these are why people are still theorizing about this show fifteen years after it came out.
There were a couple other thoughts I had on the last episode. First, I absolutely loved Matsuda shooting Light like ten times in a row (though I still don’t understand how he was able to run away after being shot so many times). It was great to see him stand up against Light and his reaction seemed very natural for the situation.
Speaking of reactions, I feel like we should have learned what happened to Misa after Light’s death. Her entire life was centered around him, so obviously that would have been a big deal for her. The most we got was those shots of her sitting alone on a train during the credits, but we were never told what happened to her after the story ended. I would have liked to see a little bit more of her, especially toward the end of the story, when it felt like she was just written out of the plot.
I really loved Ryuk’s final words as he writes Light’s name in the Death Note, along with him ending up being the one to kill Light. Ryuk never really seemed to care about Light, he was just hanging around because Light had the Death Note, but with Ryuk’s final words, it did feel like he enjoyed spending so many years with Light and that he would miss their time together once it was over. Like I said earlier, it felt very poetic that Light was killed by the very thing that started the story in the first place.
I’m not the type of person who cries over shows and movies easily. There have been times where I forced myself to cry over a certain character’s death, but I rarely genuinely cry over these things. However, if you slap a sunset in the last episode of a show, I’m going to tear up. There’s something so final about sunsets. To me they represent the end of an era, as well as a bittersweet sense of longing and regret. When Light was running from the warehouse, I did start to feel myself tearing up. Everything from the quiet swelling of the music, to the flashbacks to the first episode, to the sounds of Light’s panting and crying just really hit me in the gut. This scene was so great to me because of what it didn’t have. There was no monologue, no haunting chorus or intense music, no dramatic action shots. This scene conveyed the regret and longing that Light felt in his final moments through the visuals of the sunset, the quick flashbacks, and his body language; as well as the subtle yet emotional music and Light’s desperate panting. I think it’s a great way to close a great story.
Despite its flaws, Death Note excels at telling a memorable and captivating story. That’s why you see clips of the show being used as TikTok audios a decade and a half later. Everything from the characters, to the plot, to the soundtrack and animation add up to make a great show. I’d probably give it four out of five stars. I had some issues with the show, but overall it’s definitely something I’ll be rewatching in the near future.
