PULP. Cover shot for ‘His-n-Hers’ album. Finally got around to creating a master version of this photograph. Back in 1993 in the heat and general chaos of the moment, there would have been one print made as part of all the original photo print choices made by the band and management. At that time, there was no way to have known that this image would be the one chosen to be illustrated for the cover of their upcoming album. This hero version all came about because Jarvis contacted me to ask if it can be used as part of their background visuals for the current tour, which is a great honour. Looking forward to seeing the now reformed PULP play all the hits at Finsbury Park for the first time in 25 years this Saturday July 1, 2023. Will be a great moment to remember as opposed to the drunken 90’s! This time I’ll be clean and sober.
The backstory: In the spirit of those times during the London of the 1990’s, I felt compelled to post a hot shot from one of my early photo sessions with Pulp. The story goes that this particular shoot was mainly for press. Out of the blue some months later I was told one of the shots was going to be used as the cover for the ‘His-n-Hers’ album. To be an Illustrated version by Philip Castle. The album was released on 18 April 1994 by Island Records. It proved to be the band's breakthrough album, reaching number nine on the UK Albums Chart, and was nominated for the 1994 Mercury Music Prize. In 1998, Q Magazine readers voted it the seventieth greatest album of all time, while it was placed at number 110 in the book Virgin All-Time Top 1000 Albums. Of course when the photos were taken, we all had no idea what a brilliant success the album would be so it’s a tad embarrassing in hindsight how primitive my contribution was. Technically, it’s just above beginner lighting. Hard light which was all I knew back then. Fortunately most everyone was young then so it kind of worked. The other reality of every situation in those inkie days was that speed was the main driving force of success. Keep it moving at any cost! It was only when that process went wrong, and it did spectacularly, that everything eventually changed for the better. The PR firm Savage & Best were behind both this commission and my initial shoot for ‘Intro-The Gift Recordings’, released in October of 1993 right about the time of this shoot. Between them, the press and all the bands of the era we all made a great team somehow, which burned brightly for just a short period and then flamed out. R.I.P. Steve Mackey. From • @kevinwestenberg MOJO MAGAZINE. RECENT PUBLISHED WORK. SPIRITUALIZED. PURE PHASE Album Press shoot. Nov 22, 1994. Photo: ©Kevin Westenberg. Shot ‘Guerrilla’ style on the streets of London’s east end. This image gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when I see it! For the overall imagery and mythology of the band and as a timeless photograph. Definitely one of my top 10. On the contact sheet, this in fact is one of only two frames snapped as we were transitioning from one location to another. Jason was confident enough to walk around in his space suit amongst suited city banker folk on Leadenhall Street so when I was walking ahead and looked back quickly, I just saw. Fortunately, there was film in the camera, rare during a location transition so I quickly shot just 2 frames with my Mamiya RZ and kept going, not thinking about it any further. Once I saw it on the contact sheet days later that it literally jumped off the page! This is my version of ‘Abbey Road’ for the post post post-generation of stoner rock. By saying that I’m not comparing the importance but pointing out from a pure photographic view, the circumstances are similar. A completely unplanned captured moment. If we had tried for this perfection, we could never have made it happen. Just like with live gigs, you never know when these moments might happen. Ask Pennie Smith about her shot of Paul Simonon smashing his bass; the answer would be the same. What got me thinking about this shot, was reading about all those Spiritualized re-issues recently released. In those early days, most everything was staged, set-up and controlled too much. So when one of these totally unplanned gems comes along that endures the most critical test, the test of time, I must celebrate it. A MONSTER! Much time has passed now since it was taken, it’s only become more interesting. kevinwestenberg: ARCTIC MONKEYS. MOJO MAGAZINE Cover shoot. 'Unseen' Photo: ©Kevin Westenberg. Outtake from cover session taken on the roof of the Four Seasons Hotel. Lisbon, Portugal September 2, 2022. Lighting supplied by Ricardo Nascimento at Carapau Rental Studios and photo assist by Gonçalo Santos. My last shoot with these gents was a cracker and the subsequent posts have been my most viewed. This is the first unseen to be posted which is now 10 months later. The reason? They’re about to play 3 nights at London’s Emirates Stadium. June 16th, 17th, and 18th. Summer is heating up! I’ve lost touch so no idea how the last 10 months of their world tour has gone. Hope to catch up soon.

Opening spread taken at the Palácio da Justiça, which was within walking distance of the Hotel. Lisbon, Portugal September 2, 2022. No artificial lighting, just the sun! Assisting duties courtesy of Ricardo Nascimento at Carapau Rental Studios and second assist by Gonçalo Santos.
The dream continues…. End of summer magic in Portugal with the great Monkey’s in their prime. Travel for work is back on the table so I was determined to enjoy every second. Shoot the cover portraits first in the warmth of the sun on the roof of the hotel then… live shots that evening at their summer festival gig MEO Kalorama at Parque Da Bela Vista. Keith Cameron majestically handled the writing honours and the brilliant Colleen Maloney from Domino is also there to steer the ship.
This will be part of the new campaign for the soon to be released album ‘Car’ out on October 21, 2022. Their seventh album. I’ve photographed them in 3 distinct periods now of their multi-varied existence. They all look amazing. There are no doubts, only confidence in their world currently. Capturing that is the essential part of the mission. My Lisbon recce day on September 1st revealed this amazing location, which was too good to be true. One of the best examples of Modernist Architecture I’ve ever seen. This place may have little to do with their current visual direction but with these lightning fast editorial assignments it’s more about finding interesting places to shoot quickly with only a small time window. This has been my favorite working method most of my career. The romance view is astonishingly different from the practicality. I love the pressure so much. Any job worth doing requires pressure in order to elicit a desired solution. Ultimate gratitude in the realization of loving my job more than ever. Photo: ©Kevin Westenberg. Arctic Monkeys. @kevinwestenberg: REDUX STORIES : BRETT ANDERSON. SUEDE. GLASGOW. SCOTLAND. VOX MAGAZINE. Shoot date: OCTOBER.1.1996. Photo: Kevin Westenberg. This one looks great on the walls of the new REDUX Exhibition at Agnes B Marylebone, London. I'm committed to publish each photo in the show and explain the circumstances surrounding it. I've always loved this moment. It's burned into my memory and, onto film. I only met Brett once during the Britpop mayhem, it was right after he came off stage having just played a stormer at Barrowlands for 2 hours of hot sweaty swagger. Understandably I think he was bored at having to pose again for another asshole photographer after this exhausting gig. But, there I was backstage sticking a camera in his face. This was Suede part deux line-up on the road to promote their 'Coming Up' album, 5 top 10 singles, 'Trash' 'Beautiful Ones', 'Saturday Night', 'Lazy' and 'Filmstar' Bernard Butler had left the band by now, yet it was a great 2nd incarnation with the addition of then 17-year-old Richard Oakes. I had never met any of the Suede boys accept brief intros at various Britpop parties, gigs etc so when VoX magazine assigned me to cover them, I was all in. I was blown away by Brett's incredible stage energy. Proper Rock and Roll moment giving his all. Respect. The band was amazing at this point and here he looks the business. This was also their number 1 album that broke the band into a worldwide audience and got nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1997. A great frozen moment of the Britpop/Golden 90's in the U.K.. True Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll star. Come see the real thing at Agnes B. Marylebone shop May 1st - June 30th 2022. Brett Anderson photographed in Glasgow on the night of October.1.1996. EFM - IT'S PERFECT DAY I asked my friend i.d. If he could recall The last 24 hours and the tv on the floor Shopping with bricks In the name of fun I'd take it back officer But I don't know what I've done I've had it all like raindrops in the ocean Like shadows in the night The devils in my head have gone away It's a perfect day So we turned it on, tuned it in Got ourselves a beer Sat down, began to watch Everythings clear Things degenerated we began to sing Bart Simpson says to us "elvis was king" I've had it all been swimming in emotion Been swallowed by the night The devils in my head are here to stay It's a perfect day In a sort of pathetic way I always run away from the things I cannot see But when you see double, which one do you believe? I tried to get some help, I called for my man He popped up on the tv in a baked been can I've had it all, like drowning in devotion Like waiting for the night The devils in my head have gone away It's a perfect day In a sort of pathetic kind of way But fuck it It's a perfect day In a sort of pathetic kind of way #emf #perfectday #1995 #records #recordcollection #recordcollector #collection #collector #coleccionista #coleccion #colecciondediscos #discos #misdiscos #mimusica #myrecords #myvinyl #12inch #parlophonerecords #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #vinyls #vinilo #kevinwestenberg

JEFF BUCKLEY. LONDON. The Worx Studios, King’s Cross. March 18, 1994. Photo: Kevin Westenberg. The evolution of vision is knowing it’s constantly changing. Casually glancing through this shoot again a few weeks ago I was astounded to see the possibilities in this new (old) image. It has everything I liked about Jeff in one frame. Laid back with his trusty Gibson looking effortlessly cool. As of today this is now a new print offer for 2021. This deluxe series of prints are printed on Da Vinci Fibre Gloss Silk heavyweight archival white 310gsm acid free cotton rag natural white base. This is also the first run of this image worldwide. Get in touch with me for more details. The backstory: Even though I hung out with Jeff loads due to having mutual friends back when he first started coming to London to play those small little jazz clubs, we only actually shot one time at The Worx Studios in King’s Cross. It was also a stormy day of ups and downs due to an Interview that had gone down just prior to his arrival at the studio. Much discussion of his estranged father when the subject was supposed to be off limits got him insane in the membrane. Would have liked to have had many more chances to photograph Jeff but fate didn’t work that way. I do still every once in a while seem to find other gems from that day, like this one. Always puts a smile on my face. This also has to do with how my view of life in general has changed and as most photographers realize, the whole shoot changes as time goes on. The ones that were the killers now look pedestrian and the new ones you never rated, all of a sudden look amazing. This one’s going to be included in a few London Photography shows this summer. Stay tuned. kevinwestenberg: DAVID GILMOUR. LONDON. SPRING STUDIOS. May 18, 2015. One of the penultimate shoots of my career. This man for me was a GOD when I was a kid, obsessive about The Pink Floyd. This young stoner hippy, worshipped the Floyd above all others. Their brand of musicality and image was better than any other band. I STILL get deep chills watching ‘Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii’ which we would go see when it played at midnight showings stoned to the bejesus at the King Theatre and other venues around town! There are moments in Live at Pompeii of such perfection that I still can’t believe they exist. We anticipated every album release and bought on day of release at our local Tower Records. In 1980, I organized to fly down to L.A. to see ‘The Wall’ concert which was the closest city those shows ever got to Seattle. It was to be the final rush of greatness. Afterward, band dissent and bad song choices crept into the mix. 35 years later asked to shoot David for his album art and press for the 2015 album ‘Rattle That Lock’ I jumped at the chance. Above all, it was imperative to bring some mystery and depth back into his public image. The previous years were a mess of him just shot at or around his houseboat studio on the Thames. The 2005 Live 8 gig brought the happiness back when I got to stand on the side of stage as the original band members performed. Tears of happiness flowing once the first chords of ‘Breathe’ rang out. Perfection. 10 years on from THAT glory moment, the man is standing in front of me looking as imposing as ever yet with zero cynicism and open to all ideas. Pinnacle moment. This was a big risk proposing something as complex as this lighting set-up but it was equally important to the concept of the album art. Job done!

kevinwestenberg: ARCTIC MONKEYS. Photo: ©Kevin Westenberg. Shot as part of our Mojo cover story back on September 2, 2022 at MEO Kalorama at Parque Da Bela Vista just outside of Lisbon. Classic moment I was thrilled to witness from the best seat in the house, the stage! Fast forward to the glory and warmth of Summer 2023 and here we are…Tonight’s the night where history for these guys will be made! GLASTONBURY! A massive headliner gig. Actually going to the festival wasn’t on the cards this year but I’ll be glued to the BBC and Glastonbury website coverage. The beauty of my job was the access. Acquisition of access required coming up consistently with ‘the goods’ to justify the access. To capture certain cultural moments. To document and not only be privy to ‘said event’ but to hopefully contribute some visual juju when those events happened over the years. The too cool for school would never discuss such a lofty concept and I suppose I had the same view back in those days but that’s changed radically now. I’m an outsider looking in now for at least the last decade. Where bearing witness was once the daily routine now as an old man it’s just a very occasional taster. I’ve lived long enough through the cycle to also enjoy that process of reflection, which there was never any time to do for the 30-35 years of chaos daily. I have warmth and empathy for this band for reasons, which I’m still trying to determine. Their talent and range of musical influences are obvious. Confidence is high and never a question. These qualities have not always been the case with artists. Hard to put a finger on the exact reason but I do have max respect for their talent and hutzzzzphaaa. The huge change of their organization under their new management has also been beautiful to witness. I wish them all the best on one of their biggest nights. To them it’s possibly just another big festival gig but I doubt it. They’ll feel the love coming from one of the best audiences on earth. I would have loved to be there near the stage capturing it all like this one from Lisbon in September of 2022. (Posted on 23/06/2023)
