“An Egyptian potter in a small family-run workshop in Old Cairo (Fustat) making pots using a foot-operated kickwheel. The potter is throwing 'from the hump', producing a succession of similar vessels from the top of a single cylinder of clay. Further clay cylinders can be seen on the bench in front of him. The neck will be applied once the body of the pot is leather-hard; the foot will be turned on the wheel.”

Sad: When you break your favorite mug Happy: When you know the artist and can get a new one! I know I talk a lot about buying handmade from local people. There are so many advantages, not just for the artists you are supporting but also to your community, your economy, and YOURSELF! This is just one little example of that 😊. #buyhandmade #buylocal #supporthandmade #handmade #mug #workinprogress #lagunaclay #ceramics #kickwheel https://www.instagram.com/p/B1wZ8mqFiOy/?igshid=14w6sbay6hkic

Levihan, Fluff 3? Please? 😊
"He doesn't compare to you, Levi," Hange tells him, "No one does."
(Or: Captain Levi is jealous of Onyankopon's gift.)
Inspired by that pottery scene in the movie, Ghost (1990)

Potter's Hand (an excerpt)
Summers in Paradis are a death plague. The heat teeters on the edge of their skin like the blade of a thief, merciless enough to make them sluggish. The only thing different this year, however, is Onyankopon showing them a glimpse of Marleyan culture.
He comes up to the commander’s tent, hauling what seems to be a spinning disc, and Hange can only gasp in awe mid-conversation.
“It’s a potter’s wheel,” Onyankopon explains before anyone can even speak.
“For what?” Levi asks. He’s not completely amused. Before they were distracted, he was discussing new Scouting formations with Hange.
The Marleyan volunteer is brandishing the wheel like a relic, as if it were something to be admired. “It’s for art, Captain. Makes ceramics like bowls and vases.”
And what are they supposed to do with that? They’re soldiers, for fuck’s sake. Levi opts to continue his tactical planning right now.
The commander, however, doesn’t hesitate and instantly removes their jacket, draping it on the nearby chair. “Show us how it’s done, Onyankopon!”
Hange then settles at the stool in front of the wheel and cracks their knuckles, waiting. They’re smiling in anticipation, brown eyes excited to learn something new. Something in Levi curdles when a heavy hand lays on Hange’s shoulder.
"Commander, allow me?" Onyankopon asks.
Without waiting for a response, he sits behind Hange and slams a pound of stoneware clay right on the bat. Onyankopon then turns the disc for a start. An old kickwheel, he explains. It whirs for a bit before coming to a slow and steady speed. His leg wedges underneath, working on the pedal to make it spin. He provides a few instructions for the commander, then asks Hange to wet their hands in the basin. Together, they push the clay forward, elbows anchored against their body.
“Look at that!” Hange marvels at the lump being molded by their very own palms.
“You can feel it when the form is ready.”
Hange looks over their shoulder. “Then what?”
Onyankopon is polite to Hange’s eagerness. “When it’s ready, it will be easy to work with.”
The clay starts complying to the pressure. One squeeze and the entire form cones up, so Hange exerts more force on their thumb. Onyankopon is gentle, with the way he corrects the commander in every move, in every gesture. He’s also careful not to send the wrong signal with his touch. There's mess around them, wrists now streaked with clay marks from the excess. Hange continues to maneuver the wheel, a vague shape already forming. The effect is almost calming. Satisfying, even.
“What do you think?” Hange glances up and sees the disapproval from the captain.
The figure resembles something like a melting face, its soul screaming from the uneven curves, ready to break free. And Hange, oh Hange, they’re laughing like this is the most fun they ever had in their entire life.
In the end, Levi can only sigh.
“I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to look like that.”
Hange's lips curve into a frown.
“I'd like to think practice makes perfect,” Onyankopon says. His answer is directed more to the commander than it is to the captain. "It can only get better with every step."
The man’s probably not aware of it, but he can be really charming if he means to, because Hange immediately brightens up upon his words. The thing about him is that he’s perceptive when push comes to shove. So when Levi coughs, Onyankopon takes note. He clears his throat and steps aside. “I believe the captain wants to try it out, too.”
He makes space and Levi huddles behind Hange, putting his arms around them. He digs his chin on Hange’s shoulder, almost territorial.
"Onyankopon said to start small," Hange reminds him.
"And we will." Levi dips his hand into the basin and Hange joins in, their fingers touching. The latter’s hands are already caked with clay, so he helps them scrape off the excess, callused fingers sliding and slipping into each other. Once they’re ready, he spins the wheel once more. "I'll shape the pot, you support it."
He pushes the inside of the cylinder out, his hand big enough to mold it from within. Meanwhile, Hange is holding up the form, preventing it from leaning to one side. Their hands glide into the surface of the pot, marking it on the edges. If Onyankopon is already gentle, Levi’s even more so.
"I think it's working!" Hange's eyes gleam in the light.
“You’re doing it wrong,” Levi says. He corrects Hange by directing their hands towards the curve, the pad of his fingers on their knuckles. "Use your palm, Four-Eyes," he whispers in their ear.
Hange grins at him. “Didn’t know you’re a fast learner, Levi.”
Nevertheless, they follow the advice and push down while Levi puts more pressure with his thumb. And he’s aware of everything. Every gesture is magnified, the push and pull, the contact of skin against clay. The haste, the wetness in between them. It all matters. Levi snakes their hands together, the clay filling in the spaces between their fingers.
“Again,” he says. Levi runs a finger down Hange's wrist, their forearms resting on the wheel tray, palms smoothing all uneven surfaces.
“Looks better.” Onyankopon smiles once he can see the shape of the bowl.
Hange allows him to take it off the disc to solidify for a while. The Marleyan explains that they will have to put this in the kiln. Fire it up. Then glaze the surface for decoration.
"Remind me not to do this again," Levi scowls. The captain is wiping his hands clean with a damp towel. He then proceeds to remove the grimy matter off Hange's hands, the fabric sliding in between their fingers. "The military is terrible with the arts."
Onyankopon is still watching, eyebrows raised. An odd smirk is playing on his face. "That was very sensual, wasn't it?"
Levi scoffs, "What do you know?"
There’s sweat trickling down the captain’s forehead, hair prickling the back of his nape. It’s the afternoon heat. Levi is quick to blame it on the weather. A curse of midsummer.
After the other soldiers have taken turns trying out the pottery wheel, Onyankopon is kind enough to give it to Hange. He says it belongs to no one else but the commander.
Levi supposes Hange has been completely fascinated by it. They don’t touch it all throughout the day, but he does see them practice in the evening, though. There it is, the damn wheel, lodged on the corner of their room. It was housed in the makeshift lab at first, but Hange had taken it to their private quarters.
The commander is sitting in front of it, legs bare and sleeves rolled up. Another pad of clay is resting on the bat.
“No longer interested in Titans?”
“Give me a break,” Hange says. They’re pressing the lump into another odd shape. “It’s not every day that I find a new hobby. I want to tell Onyankopon I’ve mastered the basics at least.”
The hem of their shirt hikes upon movement, revealing the pale side of their thigh. Had it not been for that damn wheel, Levi would have already taken them to bed just like before.
The captain rolls his eyes. “Just because someone gives you something as a gift does not mean you should put all your attention on him.”
“Are you jealous?” Hange is grinning. The disc continues to turn, their long slender hands in motion. One glance at him and Hange knows they’ve caught him off guard. “I saw that, you know. The way you were scowling all afternoon.”
“And what if I tell you I was?”
The wheel squeaks upon another turn. Hange's shirt is hanging lower than ever on one side, shoulder now exposed.
"He doesn't compare to you, Levi," they tell him, expression solemn. "No one does."
"Really now."
“There’s no competition. Never was, never will be.” Hange smiles at him. They got him, oh they both know that. They gesture over their shoulder. “Join me? You must be sweating in those clothes.”
He does so, but not before discarding his shirt and cravat. Even in the evenings, it's still hot in the commander's quarters. Completely naked from the waist up, Levi finds himself sliding into another stool behind them. His lips press against Hange's nape.
“Keep turning then,” he says. The disc hums as it goes faster, water sloshing once Hange wets their hands. The clay follows the shape of emptiness, fingers sliding through the ridges, creating patterns on the surface.
Hange says, “You know, I like it when you touch me. Especially in places I can’t reach.” They dip their thumb inside the pot, mouth sly. Levi knows what they want. And he knows he can’t deny them when Hange asks for it.
His fingers graze down their thigh, slowly extending one hand in between their legs. Hange gasps, but they continue to shape the clay. The spout is now flaring at the tip. When Hange smoothens the rim with chamois, Levi kisses their earlobe, clay hardening in between their fingers. Meanwhile, his other hand finds its way towards their chest. He pops a few buttons on Hange’s shirt and slides his hand underneath the fabric.
“Don’t stop until I tell you so,” he tells them, and Hange says, Likewise.
