Osaka Castle Park

I’ve always dreamed of visiting castles so when I got to be in Japan, I made visiting Osaka Castle a priority. Osaka Castle was built in 1583 by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, a powerful feudal lord and warrior during the Sengoku period. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt plenty of times (due to war and a lightning storm) and now it stands as a historical site visited by thousands of people every year. The closest stations are Morinomiya and Osakajokoen Station. Good thing that the weather was pleasant because it was quite a walk to the main tower as it took us about 15-20 minutes.

Entrance to the park and castle grounds is free. If you want to go inside the castle, which is a museum, admission fee is 600 yen. I recommend getting the Osaka Amazing Pass, which you can use for unlimited train and bus rides and entry to Osaka’s top tourist attractions. We just had to present that pass for entry.

The museum details the history of Osaka and the castle. It also showcases the life and work of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

Start from the eight floor of the castle to see the skyline view of the city. It was kinda tiring to climb the stairs since there's no elevator access on some floors so go straight to the top first then make your way down each floor.

Visiting the plum garden was one of the things I looked forward as well since cherry blossoms weren’t in season yet.

There’s a souvenir shop on the eight floor and on the first floor of the castle.

It was already cloudy by the time we got outside. I suggest allocating 2-3 hours in your itinerary to really take in everything from nature to the structures. There are also plenty of good Pokemon to catch if you’re still into Pokemon Go. lol

TAIWAN 2018: Ximending Shopping District

A photo with the iconic Red House--Taiwan’s first public market. This red-brick octagonal structure was built in 1908 and took on the "eight trigrams (bagua)" design. It is now a multifunctional cultural and creative centre.

Most of the shops were still closed when we passed by at 10AM.

It was fairly easy to navigate the train system of Taiwan and having an Easy Card is really convenient for going around Taipei.

Ximeding comes alive at night with neon lights and bustling crowd.

The famous claw machines. Each play costs 10 NTD and they have a coin exchanger if you have large bills.

I love love this biscuit! I’m definitely gonna get more of this when I go back.

Take advantage of the 5 + 1 deal when buying snacks to bring home. They also have free taste so you’ll know what to get more of.

Peanut Nougat. So soft, so good. There are other variants, too. Almond nougat, for example but it’s pricier.

Pineapple Cake.

There are tons of cute stuff sold at stores in Taiwan but they’re generally expensive for me. I saw plenty of cute character pens and I think the cheapest was sold at 80 NTD so that’s PHP 160. But guess what, those pens are also sold at Divisoria for only PHP 35-50 each. I also tried looking up some of the items on Shopee and I discovered that it’s available for half the price or more. When travelling abroad, being a smart spender is a must. It’s nice to splurge from time to time, especially if what you’re spending on isn’t common in your home country. But if you’re going shopping, it pays to know if you’re getting a good deal of not. Always do your research on what you want to buy, what you want to prioritise, etc.

Flower blossoms in the night sky On the eighth night of Chinese New Year, families set off the fireworks in celebration of the Jade Emperor (by the lore birth on 9th day of lunar calendar). The commotion here at my home was more happening than on 1st day of CNY. As there is no telling which places will set off fireworks, I have to run around to find best spot that avoids power grid and houses to shoot the fireworks, without any foreground interests. The effect of the fireworks were made using defocusing trick during the long exposure (or reverse this method for a different look).
