So many hours it took me to complete the newly invented double knit twisted rib bind off on this cowl! The bind off was developed for me by a member of one of my fibre communities and they did such a fantastic job as it is stretchy and completely matches the invisible cast on. I put it over a pool noodle raft to block so it will dry nice & smooth all the way around.

The Nordic Knitting Primer by Kristen Drysdale
You know it is a good book when you mention it to a knitting friend and it turns out they own the book and have already made one of the patterns. The Nordic Knitting Primer leads you into the world of Nordic knitting with gently and then works you up to more complex patterns.
It starts with some tutorials--learning to knit stranded colorwork with two hands--and with some very easy projects--a cowl, a pair of mittens, etc.  The photographs are nice and big and easy to see. The first step of the French knot embroidery which you see here is one of 4 on the over-sized page and you can see it is crystal clear.  (BTW Boo and hiss to small photographs in dark yarns! why ever do editors allow them?). All of the directions are clear, done step-by step, with the information a beginner will need.
The next step is dealing with floats in stranded work, and then more complicated patterns of sweaters, slippers, mittens etc. follow. You can see here how by the end of the book you should be able to work smaller yarns and more complex patterns. The photographs of the garments are all lovely. This book will make you itch to get started.
Find it at your local yarn store, or LYS, or at your local bookstore, or online here where they have both hard copy and ebook:https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-nordic-knitting-primer-kristin-drysdale/1137482898?ean=9781645672197

Reversible neck warmer finished! I don’t think it has enough cats on it to be honest but there’s one lying in wait just offscreen!
Found the pattern here!

Finally finished this Dragon Tale Cowl by HuntHandKnits! It’s my first real knit project and first time with actual color work besides really minimum color changes in amigurumi and stuff. Definitely had some mistakes but the dragon turned out and that’s all I care about! I’m in love 😍

This is getting unwieldy & difficult to photograph progress. But I’ve only got 10 rows left of colourwork design left before the top ribbing section so I’m super excited to finish it.

Heck yes it stands up! I didn’t know if it would; I didn’t think the stockinette was dense enough to make up for the airy lace. (You work the heavy yarn and the light yarn on the same needles. Needle. It’s a circular needle.)
Scaffolding Cowl.
(My favorite part of this is that sometimes, when you have a lace collar and it has stiffness/stands up, it makes the whole thing look very creature-like. I am not sure Mrs Hammersley would enjoy my ah-great-you-look-like-a-creature take on her dress if it were possible for me to convey it, but to me, it’s sort of fascinating. Dragonflies’ wings. Godzilla. Perfectly normal reaction to a dress. Anyway, bemused by the lace realizations, happy the structural part of the knitted thing worked.)

I've got two more finished projects today, though both were finished being knit before this and just waiting on final touches.
Tumblr media
Leafy Leaf cowl! This one was finished a few days ago, but was waiting on being blocked. It took a bit to dry because it's winter here, but I'm so proud of how it turned out. This is only about 2 1/2 repeats of the 5 I'd wanted because I ran out of yarn. I onky had one ball of this yarn, and it was more important to me to make it wider (30" ish instead of the 20 ish inches the pattern wanted) than it was to make it taller. Very fun though, I'll likely make another one eventually.

Goldenrod hat! With edits though. This one has been finished for weeks, but was waiting on a pom pom. I was going to do a homemade one, but couldn't get it looking quite like I wanted, so it gets a faux fur one instead. It's removable though!

The cowls I made for my mom and dad! The original pattern is Owl Nouveau from HuntHandKnits, and I changed it for my dad's to be a badger since he likes them a lot, my first time designing my own complicate colorwork!
