The first episode of CherryMaho was so good!!

I couldn't stop giggling and squealing! They're so cute!! Ryouta & Chiaki did such a great job! Chiaki in particular made me weep because he sounded so precious I couldn't handle it!! And he was so funny too!!

AND THEY SING THE ED!! THEY SOUND SO GOOD! CAN'T WAIT FOR THE FULL SONG! <3

Oh and a random fact, Chiaki has a mole on his neck as well ;D

So I decided to make some edits for cherry magic for the latest episode since it's been a while. Kurosawa's song was so cringe.

But yeah, it was designed to be cringe, so I think they did a great job. XD

The ending song performed by the two main characters' seiyuu finally got an Adachi version for this episode. In Episode 5, it was a piano version performed by Suzuki Ryouta (Kurosawa's VA). The version performed by Kobayashi Chiaki (Adachi's VA) is acoustic. I wonder if there's any significance and I am not really a fan of the song but I think it's a nice touch that there are Kurosawa and Adachi versions.

Also, I am only noticing it now, but the art style of ED is just amazing!

Adachi is so cute. I want to keep him in my pocket. I can totally empathize with Kurosawa's reactions to this guy. (❤ω❤)

I swear, I didn’t put those two next to each other for the meme. I was just trying not to put people who had the same cast next to each other. Just one letter off and Natsukawa’s gonna be Nasukawa tho. Anyway, I do know that this had good reviews and was highly rated in baka, but as I have an aversion to shounen-ai, I wasn’t all that excited about going into this. And tbh, I wasn’t that interested in listening to this, either, ‘cause I’m not familiar with any of the cast. But it turned out alright. I found myself invested in the plot, to say the least. As many others have said, there’s not a lot of conflict in this (which is rare ‘cause I avoid shounen-ai because of the conflicts). Also, I can’t believe what I wrote down on my realtime reviews when Kazuhito asked for permission before kissing Natsukawa. I really said: “CONSENT. THERE IS CONSENT, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. THIS IS 100% SHOUNEN-AI.” And I was just, wow. There is a lot to unpack here. 😂

As for technicalities, I believe that this is both Suzuki Ryota and Kobayashi Chiaki’s debut roles as leads. If I recall correctly, Chiaki’s been in the industry longer as an extra and has been in a number of BLCDs already, so I was expecting him to deliver the better performance, but it was Chiaki who struggled here. There were some moments, especially in the bedding (yes, as you can see, I replaced the + with an x in the cast list cause they had sex, and it’s not shounen-ai anymore), where his voice was a little shaky. But it’s still a decent performance for a debut. You know, Chiaki sounds like a Kondo Takashi/Sakurai Takahiro. Ryota, on the other hand, doesn’t sound like anyone I know yet, so good on him.

Mankonyan, though. Why does he sound like Tattsun here? lmao. Also, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING THIRD-WHEELING FOR THE NTH TIME IN MY LOGS, BRO? Makonyan lead when??? Also, I loved how Makonyan said that it was a pleasure watching over our two leads here as a senpai. I always forget how it’s been so long since Makonyan’s been with us. Here I go sobbing again. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 😭😭😭

I do have to comment that I’ve grown a little tired of Fifth’s Avenue’s bgm lmao. They used the same bgms they used in 25-ji Akasaka de here, and that’s literally the last Fifth Avenue BLCD I listened to. Like, come on. FA BLCDs are just as expensive as other companies, so I’d want my money to be worth a little more, you know.

I can’t vouch for the accuracy of this to the manga, but I thought it was pretty decent as a standalone. This does make me look forward to both Ryota and Chiaki’s future careers as they’ve shown definitely marketable tones. If you’re a fan of the series and or are looking for something that’s light, definitely listen to this if you have the chance (this has a few extras too!). For more and-they-were-roommates content, Shinkon-san for cutesy, Nemuri Otoko to Koi Otoko and Ano Ko wa Sore o Gaman Dekinai for spicy, and Tasogare Outfocus for everything in between!

Cherry Magic / 30-sai made Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni nareru rashii Episode 1

Overall Score so far: 8/10

Mainly because Kiyoshi Adachi knows he is in a BL, and is very aware of what might happen to him, and the short hand title is fucking hilarious. Cherry Magic. Cherri Maho. Man I love Japanese.

Also GOOD CROWS ABOVE THIS ANIME IS GENRE-SAVVY. It knows exactly what it's doing, and feels like it's going to deliver what it promises. A wholesome lovey dovey little story.

The whole 1st episode almost feels self contained in a way that will definitely let you know if this show is for you or not. Capybara pointed out that this seems to be a common recent trend with anime for their first episodes. We saw it in Dr. Elise, Frieren, and Dungeon Meshi kind of felt that way too.

My first impression that might not make sense to some people is that this is a toned down Doppo and Hifumi from Matenrou/Hypnosis Mic.

Also, WE'VE GOT TWO POWERHOUSE VOICE ACTORS HERE!!

Adachi is being voiced by the lovely deadpan of Kobayashi, Chiaki - His other roles I know being Langa from SK∞, Gabimaru!! (my beloved) from Jigokuraku/Hell's Paradise, and Mash!! from MASHLE, also this season! I haven't seen Vinland Saga yet, but other might know him as Askeladd! Kobayashi-san has a very particular voice that doesn't fluctuate much, but he knows when to show emotion that gives a good impact. Quote from Capybara - "They picked this guy for his dead pan, but can he emote? Oh, he's Langa from sk8, oh yeah, he can emote."

Kurosawa is voiced by Suzuki, Ryouta a super memorable voice! - Ryusui from Dr. Stone, Yuu ishikami from Kaguya Sama, BISCO!!! FROM SABIKU BISCO!!! That is some RANGE right there! Loud and Prideful, Quiet and Dark, and then a Screamy Boy. This is a younger VA who has had some great starting roles, and has already become a memorable and impactful voice, making this a very good match up!

Anyways, nerding out about voice actors aside, Episode 1 spoilers below!

At first it seems like we're going to get the standard tropes that come with the BL(Boys Love)/Yaoi Genre...

Adachi is ON HIS GUARD and KNOWS THE TROPES.

But the show immediately spins those very same tropes on their head! It's great!! It's been so long since I watched a BL, and despite knowing that the genre in manga form has mostly moved away from a lot of the dub-con tropes (unless you're looking for it of course), it's lovely to see something that actually feels like a proper and semi-realistic romance.

Kurosawa seems like a super sweet dude who's ALSO aware this is a BL, but also that gay guys don't just exist everywhere and that the chance of his crush returning his affection is low.

But. There is no way Adachi is straight. He's absolutely either bi, and/or gay + somewhere on the ace-spec (demi?) depending on how things play out from here.

I bet Adachi stumbled into reading a BL manga (or two or three or) at some point in his younger years, and it had more of an impact on his psyche than he remembers, lmao.

His fascination with knowing Kurosawa has a crush on him is adorable, and he's absolute confusion at stumbling across the other man's fantasies is hilarious.

The tension between them is beautiful when Adachi is pretending to sleep, and we all KNOW Kurosawa is thinking of his sleeping face and then playing it off as just grabbing his phone. I repeat, there is NO WAY Adachi is straight, lmao.

In response to this rhetorical question, No and Yes. If Adachi was the woman, saying yes would imply that she was aware she was being asked to have sex and giving consent (at least by Japanese standards I ASSUME? I've never been in this situation). And if Kurosawa was the woman, that is one very forward and direct lady who is absolutely Down To Fuck (Again, by Japanese standards afaik).

God, then they go out for yakiniku/Korean bbq the next day, and he finds himself enjoying the other man's company and wishing they could be friends, only to brush up again him and remember this man is in love with him. Adachi, you precious child, this is why you're so lovable. The immediate regret for taking the other man's feelings so lightly and not knowing what to do as he runs away is heart wrenching and OF COURSE THE EPISODE ENDS THERE.

It's a running theme that Adachi is worried about other's opinions and doesn't know how to rely on other, which tends to be a negative, but in this case, he's so conscientious of hurting Kurosawa by taking his feelings lightly. Even though he ends up hurting him anyways, I see this as a favorable take on the typical people-pleaser type character.

I'm not really looking to the implied trope of "Best Friend who also has a crush and claims to know him best" in the next episode, but since everything else has been subverted, I'm hoping that will get subverted too? Especially knowing that Best Friend-kun is in the secondary pairing from the PVs.

I WANT TO BINGE THIS. THIS IS GOING TO BE SO DAMN CUTE.

The HypMic Reference:

Adachi is a Toned Down Doppo, who is an over worked businessman at a black company who might as well be Canadian for how often he says sorry, but goes into Berserker mode and absolutely destroys his opponents when pushed too far or his partners are hurt, and is Hifumi's emotion support human.

Kurosawa is a super Toned Down Hifumi, who is the #1 host at a club in Shinjuku and has a split personality of the perfect princely boyfriend, and a charai/flashy and "it'll be fine lol" personality, who is basically a housewife for Doppo and is also Doppo's emotional support human.

There aren't THAT many connection points between the two, but still, I like the comparison, aha.

Anyways, My Hopes For This Anime, having NOT read the manga and not wanting spoilers, are that these two get together by half way through the season and then we get the "newly dating" stages of their relationship, and various mishaps that only serve to strengthen their relationship. They seem like a very good couple and it would be a waste for them to not get together.

If they don't get together until episode 12, I will be so blue balled that I will have to drop it if only to get the circulation in my brain back.

Fall 2023 Anime List

Summer season went fast as always, loved them a lot and there was lots of interesting anime. Fall season is on the door, and can't wait to see more anime, and different genres, hopefully able to watch most of the list in the fall season. 29/9

お嬢と番犬くん/Ojou to Banken-kun/A Girl & Her Guard Dog Can't wait to see this, Umehara Yuuichiro being main character's voice actor. め組の大吾救国のオレンジ/Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange/Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange Looks intense and interesting, Kenjiro Tsuda is narrating this, and Nakamura Yuichi with Sakura Ayane, Yashiro Taku and Enoki Junya.

ラグナクリムゾン/Ragna Crimson Have been waiting for this a long time, it looks so great and action scenes were nicely done. Murase Ayumu with Kobayashi Chiaki is great pair so looking forward to hear them. Also Suwabe Junichi is there. オーバーテイク！/Overtake! Racing anime, which is first for me. PV looked great, and can't wait to see this one, Konishi Katsuyuki is main character's voice, have started to like his work the more I hear him. Also Hatanaka Tasuku is singing ED. シャングリラ・フロンティア～クソゲーハンター、神ゲーに挑まんとす～/Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su/ Shangri-La Frontier Uchida Yuuma being main character's voice actor, so it's always nice to hear him, and story as well as animation style looked interesting, Sunraku playing VR game and getting know to the world inside it.

MFゴースト/MF Ghost Second racing anime of the season, so I'm being fed good. This one has great cast, Uchida Yuuma voicing main character, and Sakura Ayane voicing Saionji Ren. Animation style looked nice, and racing parts intense. 鴨乃橋ロンの禁断推理/Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri/Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective One of the season's anime I have been waiting eagerly, PV looked great, and intense with the murder mysteries. Ron (Azakami Youhei) looks so hot. UNISON SQUARE GARDEN is singing OP, so looking forward to hear their song again. ミギとダリ/Migi to Dali/Migi & Dali Story is interesting, also animation style is looking nice and can't wait to see this. Cast is great, Murase Ayumu and Shun Horie with Takeuchi Shunsuke and Asanuma Shintarou. とあるおっさんのVRMMO活動記/Toaru Ossan no VRMMO Katsudouki/A Certain Middle-Aged Man's VRMMO Activity Log Also game anime, VRMMO game. Looks nice, colorful and funny, Ishikawa Kaito is Earth, main caharcter's voice actor. Can't wait to see this, and hear Ishikawa.

聖女の魔力は万能です Season2/Seijo no Maryoku wa Bannou desu 2nd Season/The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent Season 2 Yay, 2nd season. Have been waiting this since the first season was over. Also see Hawke and Drewes once again. 東京リベンジャーズ天竺編/Tokyo Revengers: Tenjiku-hen 3rd season of Tokyo Revengers, haven't seen 2nd season yet so probably have to watch this later. Paradox Live THE ANIMATION Music anime, so curious to see this although haven't been following their music or other stuff they have already published.

婚約破棄された令嬢を拾った俺が、イケナイことを教え込む/Konyaku Haki sareta Reijou wo Hirotta Ore ga, Ikenai Koto wo Oshiekomu PV was hilarious and funny, so eagerly waiting to see this. Demon Lord -he's hot - teaching all the bad habits to a girl.

暴食のベルセルク/Boushoku no Berserk/Berserk of Gluttony PV was backed with action and animation style was great with beautiful scenes. So curious to see this anime, and Oosaka Ryouta with Seki Tomokazu being in the cast. 柚木さんちの四兄弟。/Yuzuki-san Chi no Yonkyoudai. This is going to be most precious and emotional anime as PV was so good, and loved Yuzuki's brothers relationships so much with each other. Especially the youngest is so cute. ビックリメン/Bikkurimen Not sure about this one but I'm curious to see stickers' battles.

アンダーニンジャ/Under Ninja Ninja anime, looked interesting. Ban Taito being main character's voice. 冒険者になりたいと都に出て行った娘がSランクになってた/Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta/My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer Suwabe Junichi is in the cast, also Hayami Saori whom voice I have started to love so much, and story is a bit different than usually, so excited for this one too.

新しい上司はど天然/Atarashii Joushi wa Do Tennen/ My New Boss Is Goofy This is going to be so cute, PV was funny and sweet, especially Hakuto kitty. Great cast; Umehara Yuuichirou, Nishiyama Koutarou, Shimono Hiro, Sugita Tomokazu and Fukuyama Jun. アンデッドアンラック/Undead Unluck Supernatural anime with bizzare powers of the characters. Unlucky girl and immortal boy who get know to each other. Nakamura Yuichi is voicing Andy, and mysterious group is full of nice voice actors. はめつのおうこく/Hametsu no Oukoku/The Kingdoms of Ruin Ishikawa Kaito and Sato Hinoshi in the cast. Story sounds interesting, and Who-ya Extended is singing ED so can't wait to hear it. ゴブリンスレイヤーⅡ/Goblin Slayer II Finally 2nd season of Goblin Slayer!!! Can't wait to see them again, and of course Umehara Yuuichirou voicing Goblin Slayer, and hear his deep and honeyed voice. 最果てのパラディン鉄錆の山の王/Saihate no Paladin: Tetsusabi no Yama no Ou/The Faraway Paladin Season 2 2nd season of Faraway Paladin, so excited to see them again, especially Will and Menel. This season's story/arc looks interesting and lots of new characters to meet. SPY×FAMILY Season 2 Seeing Loid, Yor and Anya again, eagerly waiting new season and the movie later.

僕らの雨いろプロトコル/Bokura no Ameiro Protocol/Our Rainy Protocol E-sports anime, so interesting to see this kind of anime, and PV looked nice. Also Kimura Ryouhei voicing Sendou Akito. 豚のレバーは加熱しろ/Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro/Heat the Pig Liver: The Story of a Man Turned Into a Pig This is rather eccentric story, man turned into a pig who travels with the girl. Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is voicing the pig. 帰還者の魔法は特別です/Kikansha no Mahou wa Tokubetsu desu/ A Returner's Magic Should Be Special Korean web manga, and PV was great, it's nice to see time travelling anime. So curious to see this how it goes. Terashima Takuma is voicing MC. ティアムーン帝国物語～断頭台から始まる、姫の転生逆転ストーリー～/Tearmoon Teikoku Monogatari: Dantoudai kara Hajimaru, Hime no Tensei Gyakuten Story/Tearmoon Empire This is cute one, also time travel anime. The cast is great; Uesaka Sumire, Umehara Yuuichirou, Furukawa Makoto, Matsuoka Yoshitsugu and Masuda Toshiki. 黙示録の四騎士/Nanatsu no Taizai: Mokushiroku no Yonkishi/The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse Animation style is different but looks good, so curious to see this. 君のことが大大大大大好きな100人の彼女/Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo/The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You Quite interesting story, and cast is nice, so curious how this will turn out.

川越ボーイズ・シング/Kawagoe Boys Sing Music anime about choir club, so very interested to see this, and hear more of their singing as PV was great.

ドッグシグナル/Dog Signal Excited to see this anime, it sounds great and cute. KENN and Ono Kensho is in the cast so glad to hear them. 薬屋のひとりごと/Kusuriya no Hitorigoto/ The Apothecary Diaries PV was so beautiful, and Jinshi (Ootsuka Takeo) is so hot. Also Mao Mao (Yuuki Aoi) is cute and glad to hear her once again some more.

As you enter the room, it’s immediately clear why. On the ground beside a toppled chair is Sora Kobayashi, dead.

Tomo’s voice blares over the intercom like last time. “Congratulations! You have survived the second motive! Please, meet at the prison. Participation is mandatory.” “We’re already here asshole.” Ryouta calls out towards a camera. Mere moments later, the second announcement from Tomo plays. “Good. You’re all here. Then the investigation period begins now. Do your best to identify the murderer. Vote correctly in the trial, and you will be rewarded.” Following the announcement, your phone pings with a new case file. Ryouta sighs. “Least we didn’t have to expose the dead girl’s secret.” He mutters “I’m getting the fuck outta here.” While Ryouta may have been able to walk away from this, you couldn’t… At least if you wanted to figure out who did this, and possibly save an innocent person from taking their place.
