Phylogenetic wild cat tournament
Ocelot lineage - Final
Genus: Leopardus - Final
Depth: 5 (6 wins away from championship)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a whole week of slightly losing, the kodkod eventually took over and triumphed against the pampas cat, while the andean mountain cat eliminated the well-liked margay. (you people really like fluffy cats here don't you) Now they face each other in the genus and lineage final.

The Kodkod, or better known Leopardus Guigna or Huiña, is the smallest of the eight species of New World cats included in genus Leopardus that populate southern America, and it's one of the smallest cats in the world. With a little patience and luck, you can still find them in isolated pockets of forest in southern Chile, especially around Los Lagos and Chiloé Islandl.

The kodkod (Leopardus guigna), also called güiña, is the smallest cat in the Americas. It lives primarily in central and southern Chile and marginally in adjoining areas of Argentina. Its area of distribution is small compared to the other South American cats. Since 2002, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List as the total effective population may comprise less than 10,000 mature individuals, and is threatened due to persecution and loss of habitat and prey base.
The kodkod's fur color ranges from brownish-yellow to grey-brown. It has dark spots, a pale underside and a ringed tail. The ears are black with a white spot, while the dark spots on the shoulders and neck almost merge to form a series of dotted streaks. Melanistic kodkods with spotted black coats are quite common. It has a small head, large feet, and a thick tail. Adult kodkods are 15 to 20 inches in head to body length with a short 7.9–9.8 inch long tail and a shoulder height of about 9.8 in. Weight ranges between 4.4 and 5.5 lb.
Kodkods are equally active during the day and during the night, although they only venture into open terrain under the cover of darkness. During the day, they rest in dense vegetation in ravines, along streams with heavy cover, and in piles of dead gorse. They are excellent climbers, and easily able to climb trees more than a meter in diameter. They are terrestrial predators of birds, lizards and rodents in the ravines and forested areas.
Male kodkods maintain exclusive territories 1.1 to 2.5 square kilometres (0.42 to 0.97 sq mi) in size, while females occupy smaller ranges of just 0.5 to 0.7 square kilometres (0.19 to 0.27 sq mi).
The major threat to the kodkod is logging of its temperate moist forest habitat, and the spread of pine forest plantations and agriculture, particularly in central Chile. In 1997 to 1998, two out of five radio-collared kodkods were killed on Chiloé Island while raiding chicken coops.

Rating small cats instead of doing my homework part 2
So my last post got a lot of attention so!!! I will rate more wild kitties!!!!!!
Continuing genus Leopardus
Colocolo/Pampas Cat
Tumblr media
7/10. a personal favorite, he just looks so friendly!! with a big ol button nose!!! However he does lack some key characteristics of succesful cats, he's just too friendly
Geoffroy's cat
Tumblr media
8/10. Just let him rest. He looks so done with life. Besides that he has good camouflage and stealth bonuses, plus points because he has been through a lot
Kodkod /Güiña Cat
Tumblr media
A LITERAL CHILD. 9/10. He looks cute but i bet my money that he's a PRO HUNTER. A good look at what the bay cat could have been, his small far apart ears actually go with his face, minus points for being too small to defend himself
Genus Lynx
Canadian Lynx
Tumblr media
I'll have to give a 5/10, i know he needs those feet to be able to walk on snow but GOD THEY LOOK RIDICULOUS. At least idk make his body bigger or more proportional
Eurasian Lynx
Tumblr media
7/10. The superior lynx species. Looks powerful enough to take down big prey, however i don't feel the vibe, i know he is successful, but he just doesn't look like it, i'm sorry boy
Iberian Lynx
Tumblr media
6/10. The beard doesn't do it for me, he's not very adaptable so i would never put my money on him, but he looks like he can live fine
Bobcat
Tumblr media
7/10. He can't take down big prey, but he sure knows how to get by, very sneaky and cunning, he feels slytherin
Genus Acionyx
Cheetah
Tumblr media
7/10. Don't get me wrong, i love cheetahs, but they just invested so much in speed that it's gotten so much weaker in other aspects, i do respect her, but i know she won't bring any food home
Genus Puma
Cougar/Puma
Tumblr media
9/10. Pumas are hands down one of the most adaptable cats i have ever seen, they fail to compete with jaguars, but their range is just spectacular. Only downpoint would be that, with all their hunkness and power, they are not considered big cats
Jaguarundi/Yaguarundi/Weaselcat
Tumblr media
2/10. I don't care. Those guys look like a damn mistake, why would you, a feline, the TOP carnivore build, want to be like a mustelid, a WEASEL for god's sake. Only plus points is that they are very successful being slinky bastards
Once again, like if youd like a part 3!!! I am really glad the first one did so well, considering i did as a joke, anyway see ya!!!!!!!!!

besides cats what are your favourite animals? :)
omg yeah i love all the animals on earth i think my most reblogged animal is literally like the common raccoon which are just normal animals that appear .. outside people's houses. i also am slightly insecure honestly all my favourites are very normal well loved animals but well who care =_=
i mostly like big cats the most which is cheating cuz u said besides cats but all cats have basically been my first ever special interest from since i was but a caterpillar. i like snow leopards the most and then servals
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the first guys ever ^ they hold their tails cuz it's just fun they're so cute
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
little freaks ^ a normal leucistic and melanistic one cuz i also like colour mutations obv WHO DOESNT!!!!
then i also love maned wolves they're like the sisters to servals to me and they're their own special species not very closely related to any other canid which is cool i also love coyotes specifically but wolves are preddy cool too i don't know much about them as much but i will watch any coyote documentary i can and much like foxes things that are considered pests and adapt in unique to urban living are but little angles to me
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i also like melanistic kodkods cuz they're like wild herbert and all sharks but especially blacktip reef sharks these are babiess
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also like bamboo sharks and nurse sharks. then also deer + orcas + domestic and feral horses + flying foxes which are extra special cuz they're very cute but they also live HERE and scare the dickens out of me when i go outside and they take off it's like a tent flapping in the wind it's crazy. i like tanukis too they're like jelly donuts. i really think most animals are cool and have their own merits and i can appreciate their splenderifousness i find most things cute too i think snakes are like puppies i also think it's cute that shark baby is called a pup that's so true .. and ofc i do like foxes but maybe not as much as people assume LOL i actually like arctic foxes the most☝️ they're so round. i tend to like the scary versions of things too like seals are cute but sea lions rule

Phylogenetic wild cat tournament
Ocelot lineage
Genus: Leopardus
Depth: 9 (8 wins away from championship)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New genus! This one, Leopardus is actually the most populous of all: it has 8 species (Felis has 7, Prionailurus has 6). The reason I started the tournament with two others and not this is that Leopardus cats are "further" away from the other genuses in term of genetic closeness.
With it, we, for the first time in the tournament, leave the old world and visit America, more precisely South America. Both of these kitties live there.
Geoffroy's cat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes! this one comes in black too!
Kodkod

more melanism!
