Requisite Kung Fu Panda Post
Yes, I am going to see Kung Fu Panda this weekend, and I've decided to rewatch the series to prepare. Since this is the "digging deep in analyzing movies" site I'm going to talk way too much about it.
Specifically, I'm going to focus on the truly exceptional storytelling of Kung Fu Panda 1, how each subsequent movie feels like yet another installment of Po's story, and how while the first movie is the best, part of the power of the first movie is the ways in which the subsequent movies lift it up.
I like this series way too much y'all. I have not only seen each movie many times, I have also seen all of the bonus content movie shorts set in the same universe multiple times (the one that covers the backstories of the Furious Five is particularly good imo).
Spoilers ahead. Analysis below the cut.
Okay, first off, I forgot how emotional the first movie is.
There are so many tiny gut punches, but there are also so many funny and 'emotionally high' moments. I think what it comes down to is the first movie knows how to make relatable stakes that hold gravitas.
Here's what I mean by that. We start out with a dream sequence, right? and it's really cool. And then Po wakes up, and tries really hard not to disappoint his dad even though he obviously doesn't quite fit the life he lives (evidenced by his ongoing desire for something else, the way he feels like he's limiting himself to 'realistic expectations,' and how he doesn't quite fit between the tables and struggles to serve the customers).
So instantaneously, and I think this is like in the first ten minutes, we get the following stakes:
not disappoint his dad
enjoy what he loves whenever possible
It's a small life, but man. First of all, I find his problems extremely relatable (trying to keep his dreams 'realistic;' trying to make his dad proud and happy). But they're also resonant, because we get what they mean to Po.
So when we hit the first real goal—watch the Furious Five compete to find the Dragon Warrior—we know just how much it means to Po.
And the obstacles that get placed on him (the noodle cart) are both funny and thematically relevant. He is literally tied down by his noodle life, and his dedication to his dad. He cannot make it to Kung Fu unless he is willing to let go of the noodle cart. To admit to his father what he really loves and wants out of life.
And BAM, it is actually the minute that he admits to his dad (after a poignant and sad-but-funny near-miss) "I love Kung Fu!" that he finally is able to access the Jade Courtyard. (This is also an important moment because, well, him admitting what he wants to his dad. It's important. He's honest, and we get to see his dad's reaction—sympathy and kindness. His dad still only knows noodles. That's all he can offer Po. But he loves Po no matter what.) Also Po whamming into a wall and then fireworking over the wall is really funny. His poor dad, the way he just DOES NOT know what to do.
And poor Po, he does not get to see ANY of the kung fu. First task, 100% failed. Plus, he earns the ire of his heroes and general humiliation. This is one of the few moments where a character gets humiliated that I completely love. Secondhand embarrassment is like poison to me, and I often feel bad about humiliation. But Po's humiliation is funny and then, to me, warm.
I think it's because of the narrative framing. We know, because he is the main character, that Po is the Dragon Warrior. The Furious Five and Shifu are known as good and righteous people, and the way in which they defend each other from this stranger—they are deeply unkind to him but also kind to each other. I can sympathize with why they want Po gone. And then we have Oogway, who seems to hold wisdom and knowledge beyond what he says.
(And an aside about Oogway. The second and third movies give this even more oomph, because there's this person, right, who falls in front of his eyes. But he's also from a group of people thought to be all gone, who are known masters of chi. The weight of destiny in that!! And it makes sense for Oogway to say nothing, right? Because they'll internalize it only if they get to learn from themselves, and you can't argue with someone who won't argue with you.)
So, then, Shifu and the Furious Five conspire to get Po to quit. This is Po's next obstacle. (And, look, the way all the characters but especially Shifu and Tigress get arcs that parallel Po's never fails to impress me.)
And instead of a pure win / lose condition, we get to know that Po is highly tenacious (implied by him trying to get the noodle cart up the stairs), and that he carries a lot of shame.
But when we really get to know about his shame, when he tells Shifu, if anyone could make me not me, it would be you. Man, that's heartbreaking. And it made sense why he stayed before this—but it adds gutwrenching layers of depth to it.
Also Tigress's story breaks my heart every time. "More than he loved anyone before… or since." The way her voice breaks. Her little baby face. And although it's heavily implied in the movie that she too needed Shifu on a deeper level than just teacher, the backstory minisode adds SO MUCH depth. Because she's a little girl whose strength makes her difficult to handle and who, after abandonment, has rage which makes her terrifying. And Shifu shows up, and brings her to a place where those can be assets, not weaknesses. He adopts her, just like he adopted Tai Lung.
But he still doesn't give her all the love she needs.
I think she's my favorite character. And I like that Shifu, though a fair and caring mentor, is also not perfect by any means.
So Shifu confronts Oogway about Po, and gets a lesson in control. Shifu is so interesting here because, one, he's not controlling himself nearly as tightly as he does with the five. He is audibly frustrated and angry. He's making himself vulnerable with his master. And though he is careful not to disrespect him, he does argue with him. The way he argues that he can control when the peaches fall, and then one hits him on the head—hilarious.
And this whole scene makes Oogway's death emotionally impactful, because it's so clear that Shifu still has a lot to learn and still feels like he needs his master.
And just to wrap it all around full circle. "There IS no secret ingredient." Po's experience of social affirmation and self-love and feeling he is enough is what brings out his full potential and allows him to fulfill his destiny. And Tai Lung's tragedy is, that despite being loved, his ego tells him that only external things can ever bring power. The fact that he cannot see what Po can—that there is no secret ingredient—is his downfall in life. Which makes him a perfect foil for Po AND a perfect narrative vehicle in a story that is all about love, acceptance, celebrating our differences, and community. And none of these things would ring true if there wasn't a lack of acceptance to overcome at the start.

The truth about Tai Lung
It’s a translation of this article. Maybe it’s a bit too harsh on Oogway and Shifu, but considering 20 years of hell they put Tai Lung through, I can’t say this harshness is unfounded.
Finally, after some time, we can conduct a thorough investigation of the events shown in the film codenamed "Kung Fu Panda", for the moment has come to expose the villains and clean the true hero’s name. It's time to take a closer look at the official version, which tells about the cheerful, careless Po, the wise and talented masters Oogway and Shifu, as well as the villain Tai Lung, who is responsible for all the bad things that happened.
So, the story begins at the moment when a small nameless fluffy snow leopard falls into the clutches of the kung fu master Shifu, who adopts him. Shifu immediately turns the child into a tool for his interests. He gives him a very meaningful name and begins to train him "until his bones cracked", aiming him for only one thing - to become the Dragon Warrior and get the scroll. Was it out of love? Perhaps. Who doesn't want his son to become the very, very best?
On the other hand, there can be another side - Tai Lung was just a tool with which the red panda expected to get to the Dragon Scroll, i.e. to do what he himself could not do. And I'm afraid that multiple facts speak in favor of the fact that this side was prevalent.
Tumblr media
As we remember, Tai Lung, carefully following the instructions of his master (that's right, his master, not his father - remember how he addressed Shifu on the steps of the temple upon his return), almost reaches the heights of Kung Fu. But, according to Shifu and Oogway, he loses his "humanity" in the process, moreover, Shifu himself recognizes this failure. Well, he recognizes it, having lost the battle and being in a hopeless situation. That is, in a situation where a dishonorable one may deceive his more noble opponent and try to play on his feelings. But let's take the official version for the truth. Then the question arises - where did Master Oogway look that entire time? The same turtle that reached the heights of enlightenment, the heights of Kung Fu and told all sorts of wisdom to Po, instructing him on the true path. Was it by chance that he stepped back from pointing out Master Shifu's mistakes? But "there are no accidents." Maybe Master Oogway foresaw everything in the same way as he foresaw the situation with Tai Lung's escape (Oogway knew his student Shifu well, even possibly shaped his personality). He acted consciously and according to a plan, knowing that the Dragon Scroll is empty.
Let's try to guess what goals he pursued. First, he becomes the savior of the village by defeating Tai Lung with his secret technique. Second, the presence of a constant threat makes the post of Oogway important and necessary. Third, a prison fortress was built specifically for the snow leopard following an individual, rather complex (try to build something over an abyss) project: a clearly expensive activity. This, of course, means fund stealing, kickbacks, etc. Fourth, Tai Lung is guarded not just by some warriors, but by the Anvil of Heaven, a special squad of 100 elite rhinoceros warriors, whose commander is a student of Master Flying Rhino. The squad is officially known as fighters against dictatorship and injustice in the country's lands, now these warriors are  taken off duty and receive their salaries for guarding just one captive. Fifth, Master Shifu loses his face as the creator of the "monster", and even the one who lost the duel to him. He will no longer be able to threaten the power of Oogway. No wonder the ancient wisdom says, “look for those who gain“.
Tumblr media
But back to the snow leopard who graduated, passed all the tests and almost certainly fought the villains (he could not help but want to try his kung fu art on strong, skillful opponents) in real fights. And here he is in front of Master Oogway, having come to the finish line thanks to his talent, and most importantly, hard work. A moment more and he is the Dragon Warrior. So what?
Master Oogway rejects him without a word, understanding the cost of this refusal, even while knowing that the scroll is empty and Tai Lung won't get any superpowers. Not a single word he said trying to prevent a catastrophe. He did not, for example, say "you are not ready yet, you still need to temper your spirit, as you tempered your body". Just one blow crosses out the purpose of life of a young man. What about Tai Lung's "father", Master Shifu?
He also betrays his son and disciple. No words of support or encouragement, no attempt to explain something or object to the turtle. He admits his defeat and discards the tool, which has become unnecessary. After all, his words "I was always proud of you" were just an empty phrase (we will return to this later). What do we have now?
A teenager stubbornly and hardworkingly went to the goal determined by his father and master, overcoming pain. His whole life was devoted to only one thing - to become the Dragon Warrior, obediently following the commands of his teacher. He gave everything for this and now was betrayed even by his father, discarded and devoid of any purpose. A being who realized that his whole life, in fact, was a waste of time and effort. Again, a teenager, it’s important; even an adult in such a situation is unlikely to remain cold-blooded, logical and impartial.
Who, in the heat of rage and disappointment, has not pounded a wall with fists? Who didn't sometimes get angry at parents or teachers? It’s not surprising that Tai Lung experienced a fit of anger and, most importantly, despair. And he began to destroy what came under his paws. Here we move on to the next step.
Was the crime of the snow leopard so great? Nobody talks about killed ones. Was there any point in Tai Lung killing the defenseless and innocent? Destroy everything - yes, the rest is a big question. But let's decide for a moment that there were victims. How can one call the behavior of Masters Oogway and Shifu then? The leopard holding a grudge against them harms the people whom Shifu and Oogway swore to protect, while they hole up in the Jade Temple.
Tumblr media
Okay, Shifu believed that the Dragon Scroll was worth even such a sacrifice, but Oogway? He cold-bloodedly left the village to be massacred. He wants Tai Lung to become a villain in the eyes of the civilians.
He's just following through on his plan. Step by step.
Finally, Tai Lung, through rage or through reflection, comes to a major conclusion. If he was rejected, he must take possession of the scroll - to achieve the goal for which he was prepared, to prove that he is the best and strongest. Perhaps he even believes that Oogway simply decided to test his strength, the ability to challenge and defeat Master Shifu and Oogway himself.
And so he goes to the Jade Palace. A fleeting fight with the master and a victory in which the leopard does not seek to kill his opponent. Then the Oogway’s attack. A challenge thrown to the strongest and ... instant defeat. Oogway, who didn't lift a finger to stop the destruction of the village, easily stops Tai Lung's furious attack with a secret move. The play almost reaches its final. If Oogway did not have far-reaching plans, he would simply kill the enemy.
What's next? Prison confinement. Life imprisonment, and not in a normal prison. Imagine for a moment yourself shackled in a heavy, tight stone shell, which does not allow you to breathe and puts an exorbitant burden on your shoulders. You are on your knees, and your arms are stretched out to the sides as if on a rack, twisted by giant stones, hanging down to the bottom of a bottomless abyss. The shackles cut into your wrists until they bleed, trying to tear you in half. But that's not all. Needles driven into your acupuncture points debilitate you. Those pitiful remnants of strength that remain go to hold the shell and stones. It seems to be a nightmare come true, but that's not all.
Around you is only a small island of stone, constant darkness, cold and silence, broken only by the echo of the changing guards or the arrival of jailers. The jailers on whose good will you depend. Hunger, thirst, and even cleaning up your place of detention (you don’t have a toilet and can’t move) are all in their power. Well, we saw the attitude of the commander of the guard towards the prisoner - to step on the tail of a defenseless one and ridiculing him with what hurts the most. I wouldn’t be surprised if, out of boredom, the guards abused the prisoner, but let’s leave it as speculation.
So, is anyone ready to be in this position for at least a couple of days? I think no, but Tai Lung was doomed to live the rest of his life like that. Moreover, as we know, he lived like this for 20 years! But here, too, our hero is at his best. An ordinary creature would go crazy under such conditions, would sink lower than low, turn into an animal in the worst sense of the word, break down. But Tai Lung is not one of those. With his former diligence, despising pain, and having hardened his spirit, he confronts the surrounding nightmare.
Tumblr media
He did not just resist. There were painful attempts at weak muscle movements so that the body would not atrophy during the long years of confinement, reproducing and mastering the technique of Oogway's "energy" strikes, a technique that the leopard has seen only once.
And a fierce desire to escape from hell, break free and prove that he is still capable of achieving his goal.
But let's leave our prisoner. Fast forward to those who threw him there. Master Shifu, father, teacher - has he ever visited his son and student? Not! Why would he need a broken tool?  The one to which he lost and which he is afraid of. And it is because of this fear that he walked gloomy. Remember how Tai Lung's father was frightened by Oogway's revelation about the escape. How he did not go there himself, but sent his henchman with an order to strengthen the guard and prevent an escape at any cost. Maybe this is what he meant when said "I've always been proud of you."
What is Shifu up to? Now he trains five tools at once. All the same methods and even more violence. He no longer allows even a grain of feelings to manifest itself. And he fails again, Oogway chooses the "true Dragon Warrior", again undoing all the Shifu’s plans with one movement of the paw and humiliating him, showing him his place. However, this time Oogway introduces a new piece into the game - Po. He gives Shifu a briefing about "there are no accidents", "you will find your peace" and all that. He also talks to Po about peaches and so on, i. e. does what he didn't do for Tai Lung.
Then the snow leopard escapes.The goose loses his feather (accidentally?) and now the monster is free. Exhausted by 20 years of imprisonment, but not broken. An elite squad of rhinos, serving - yes, there is official information about this, - under the direct command of Oogway, is trying to kill Tai Lung. But he survives. Without stopping, without trying to kill the enemy on purpose, he rushes to freedom. The captain, who was personally recommended by Master Flying Rhino, failed the mission and is disgraced, just like his teacher.
Everything is just as planned. What about Tai Lung? What did he say to the messenger he left unharmed? "The true Dragon Warrior is coming home." Home! It's unlikely that even the most inveterate villain will call home a place that he hates and is trying to destroy. No, he only hates Shifu and Oogway. And that’s still not a fact.
Another step. And so Oogway "achieves enlightenment" by avoiding Tai Lung and leaving everything to Shifu and panda Po (for whom he had already done a lot)... and to the training he encourages Master Shifu to have. Which he does, forgetting about the Furious Five, who went on a dangerous campaign - to protect their master and the village from a fictional enemy. A training where the fatty Po will suddenly show an unprecedented talent and reach the heights of Kung Fu. Meanwhile, the Furious Five face off against Tai Lung.
This battle is an interesting episode too. Shifu's disciples oppose his creation. But that creation has already managed to step further, and not without the help of the torments sustained in prison. Five attack one (isn't it a strange ratio for the "good side"?), trying to kill him. Different styles, combo attacks, chosen ambush location. All the advantages are on their side. All except skill, hardened spirit and courage.
Tumblr media
Tai Lung, already seemingly dead under the furious attack, returns from the foggy abyss to defeat Shifu's minions. But he does not consider them enemies and shows them compassion. All members of the Five return home alive. Immobilized so that they would not be tempted to attack the leopard again, but alive. And Shifu knows how to bring them back to normal. Shifu's pathetic bleating that they were returned alive, because Tai Lung wants to intimidate them, can be easily refuted. If the Crane brought only their heads, the fear effect would have been much greater. But our furry hero is not a killer. He just goes home.
After that, everyone knows about Shifu's discovery that the scroll is empty. About Po leaving and his father revealing a secret to him. About the proud but stupid Shifu who remained in the Jade Palace. About the exodus of the inhabitants from the city. The city that Tai Lung, contrary to the assurances of Shifu and, probably, Oogway, didn’t intend to destroy. And did not destroy, although he could. This is his home and his goal is not to bring destruction, but to find the scroll and finally finish his Path in search of the Dragon Warrior.
And now the words "I'm back, master" are heard. Deceived and betrayed by a red panda who called himself his father and teacher, thrown into hellpit, gone through all the circles of Hell, almost killed in a battle with henchmen, Tai Lung still respectfully calls Shifu his master. But for Shifu, he’s already a discarded and broken toy that has not justified expectations, one who surpassed Shifu and is more noble and courageous. It torments Shifu, who is still not devoid of a bit of feelings, and guilt.
It torments Shifu, who is still not devoid of a bit of feelings, and guilt.Now he says "I'm not your master anymore." And so the fight begins, the fight for an empty scroll. A fight in which the student tries to prove to the master that he is worthy. A fight in which the heartless incarnation of Evil desperaty screams "Whatever I did, I did to make you proud!". And a battle in which the father and the teacher tries to destroy the one who encroached on his power.
All these "sorry and proud" are only said when Shifu is defeated. An attempt to deceive the enemy, to confuse him, to gain an advantage again. And it almost succeeds. Remember how Tai Lung hesitated. And remember how he sought not to kill Shifu, but only to get to his goal - the scroll. No wonder he doesn't finish off Shifu, but starts chasing Po. The one who took possession of everything for which Tai Lung gave whole his life.
The ensuing fight again reveals a lot. Tai Lung is strong despite spending 20 years in immobility. And again he does not kill his enemy. Scroll. That's all he needs... to understand how cruelly Oogway laughed at him. Nothing. Zero. All his suffering, all, all in vain. And a taunting panda to boot. A panda that is not affected by Oogway's technique (remember - a technique that paralyzes, not kills the enemy. Tai Lung just wanted to make Po shut up).
Tumblr media
Thus begun the last fight of Tai Lung, who finally lost the reason to live. An empty scroll did what the prison could not do. Tai Lung was broken. And only the remnants of the spirit, attempting to regain himself and find at least some goal, give him the strength to fight. Fight a hopeless battle to the very end, once again stepping through suffering and pain, gathering the last of his strength to attack again.
Given his condition, he couldn't help but fall into the Wuxi Finger Hold, the hardest part of which is cleaning up afterwards. And what about the great and noble loafer and glutton Po? What does our merry and kind guy do? He is consciously, with a smile on his face and mocking words "Nope. I figured it out", performed the technique. Cold-bloodedly carrying out the murder of the defeated and broken enemy. "Skadoosh!"
After that he returned as “the monster slayer”. Returned to Master Shifu, who's by no means lying near death or severely crippled after the battle with Tai Lung (were the latter’s attacks on his adoptive father so cruel?), but is chilling by the pool and not at all grieving for his dead disciple and son.
And now, dear reader, I would like you to think about the question "Who was the true hero and victim of this dramatic story, and who were the main villains." Who deserves to be respect and remembered, and who deserves contempt. And thanks to everyone who read to the end!

I'm doing research for a story, and I came across this:
"In Chinese martial arts, 'Dragon style' is used to describe styles of fighting based more on understanding movement, while 'Tiger style' is based on brute strength and memorization of techniques."
So I'm thinking about Kung Fu Panda now! And this just makes a lot of sense for the characters because Tigress is aggressive, and we know she's "hard core" enough to punch a mast and feel absolutely nothing. Her fighting style is very offensive as well and involves a lot of clawing, jabs, ripping... And, well, she's a tiger, and her using the Tiger Claw Kung Fu system really solidifies all of this. And then we have Po, the Dragon Warrior and he struggles at first, but he does gain an understanding of movement. He worked really hard with Master Shifu, and instead of strength, they focused heavily on movement when it comes to martial arts. Po uses Lung Ying, Southern Dragon Style Kung Fu. This style also works for Po's character as well because he is about trying to understand things, and trying to understand people, but more importantly, understanding himself.
What I find so interesting is that in ancient Chinese mythology, dragons are good and have many spiritual abilities, while the innate enemy of the dragon is depicted as being the tiger. In the first movie, Tigress really was one of the minor antagonists because she wanted Po to leave, and she saw this as Po taking her place when she should've been the Dragon Warrior. Of course, as we know, things smooth over and they become incredibly close friends. I love that they chose a tiger character as a minor antagonist for a bit though. Really great writing.

The Hero with Dead Parents is not Cliché, it’s Necessary
The staggering number of protagonists in sci-fi and fantasy with dead parents grows every single year. Frodo Baggins, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker (before the retcon in ESB), almost every Disney Prince and Princess, the Baudelaire children. Beyond the realm of fantasy into action, thriller, romance, mystery, slice-of-life, and bildungsromans.
Dead parents, or parent, is the curse of being the hero of the story and for a very good reason:
Parents are inconvenient as f*ck.
Unless the mom and/or dad is the villain of the story or the entire story is about the relationship with the parent/parents, the “dead parent” trope serves many purposes and while it may be “cliché” that doesn’t mean this trope is bad or, in my opinion, overused.
It’s one less liability the hero has to worry about protecting
It’s one less obstacle in the hero’s path to their adventure
It’s one (or two) less characters to find excuses to stay relevant in the story
It’s a juicy backstory a lot of people can relate to
Trauma. Is. Compelling.
It’s an excellent motivation
And their murder is an excellent inciting incident
Living parents and guardians get killed off both for internal plot reasons, and meta writing reasons: Living parents are a pain in the ass to keep up with. You’re stuck with a character your hero should still keep caring about, keep thinking about, keep acting in relation to how their actions will be seen and judged by that parent. That parent becomes an obvious liability by any villain who notices or cares.
Living parents can of course be done well, unless they’re the villain, but they just kind of sit there on the fringes of the plot, waiting around to be relevant again and they kind of come in four flavors:
There when the plot demands for pie and forehead kisses (Sally from Percy Jackson)
A suffocating but well-meaning obstacle in between the character and their independence trying to do right (Abby from The 100, Katniss’ mom from Hunger Games, Spirit from Soul Eater)
A mentor figure (Valka from HTTYD 2, Hakoda from ATLA)
The only rock this character has left (Ping from Kung Fu Panda)
*Notice how many of my examples lost their partners shortly before or during the plot, thus still giving the hero the “dead parent” label.
Most of these are self-explanatory so I’ll say this:  I think this trope gets exhausting when the parents are written out without enough emotional impact on the hero. These are their parents and a lot of the time, the emotional toll of losing them isn’t there, like just slapping a “dead parents” sticker is all you need to justify a character’s tragic backstory and any behavioral issues they might have.
Like, yes, the hero has dead parents, but you still have to tell me what that means to them beyond obligate angst and sadness. When the “dead parents” trope reads as very by-the-numbers, usually the rest of the story is, too.
How present the parents were in the character’s life should be proportional to the death’s impact on the narrative (as with any character you kill off). If they were virtually nonexistent? No need to waste a ton of time. If they didn’t matter to the character before, they don’t need to matter now unless the plot revolves around some knowledge or secret their parent never shared.
Sometimes, the hero’s dead parents are a non issue. Frodo being raised by Bilbo doesn’t impact his character at all. It’s a detail given and tossed away. On the other hand, sometimes the entire centerpiece of the work is revenge/justice/catharsis surrounding the parent’s death—Edward and Alphonse Elric’s entire story is defined by the consequences of trying to bring their mother back from the dead.
As someone who kept one of my protagonist’s parents alive and didn’t make them villains just to spite the trope, I have all the more respect for this enduring legacy of fiction. You can of course keep the parents alive, but I don't think it's seen as lazy or cheating or taking a shortcut just killing them off, so long as you remember that your hero is human and should react to losing them like a real person.

Disney is such a varied company/studio at times you get stuff on the level of Encanto, Mulan, Zootopia, etc. (Your mileage may vary) but then they also put out this reboot, Mulan live action, get rid of Disney channel, etc. Like while not all their films are winners or losers you can see a different tone as they change CEOs and closed the 2d animation department.
I mean I'll give Eisner loads of shit but at the very least he sometimes tried new things after using that Paramount experience to get the company out of the red. That Alien encounter ride was interesting and Disneyland Paris was a shitshow but it was an opportunity for imagineers to let their Jules Verne love run rampant.
Encanto despite being a little undercooked in the writing department was interesting enough. Live action Mulan was a wannabe wuxia filmed right next to Ugyhur prison camps. Turning Red was...something. Not good imo but it was something. Unlike Raya the Last Dragon, TR and Encanto actually left an impression at least.
I keep wondering if Disney's trying to lean into that DreamWorks style of films with referential humor and whatnot, even the art style and writing in Encanto and Turning Red made me think of DreamWorks or Blue Sky more than Disney. And it's kind of pathetic to see a studio that built itself on its own iconic image trying all these different aesthetic (and cultural, tho that's another debate entirely) costumes. Like ok, a lot of people are disillusioned and don't think the Disney wholesome shit is worthwhile anymore. But I recall Walt himself reading a newspaper review of Mary Poppins calling it cheesy kiddy schmaltz, and he just shrugged with a frown and said "Well, I like cheesy kiddy schmaltz." This is the same man who also said he made money to make movies, not the other way around, but I digress.
Disney cannot ever succeed in that kind of parody/meta/self-referential and self-critical humor. It just doesn't work with their company's history and image for the past half a fucking century or so. Humor, yeah, they've had plenty of funny films. But those well-remembered Disney films that had that kind of humor in them also had an earnestness behind them. Hercules had some little digs at parody and shit but it was small and quick and it also didn't distract from the actual story it was trying to tell.
Shrek 2, Megamind, Kung Fu Panda, Monsters Vs Aliens are all great films AND great comedies because that meta humor is baked into Dreamworks's identity as a studio and they know how to use it. You're not gonna be as successful with that kind of writing as them, and trying just makes me want to watch DreamWorks films.
Also all the live action films are missing any kind of visual identity, and the entire thing just looks and sounds like the tax write-off and copyright reset button that it really is. I joke about "lunchables" anime but Disney's entire live action department (a fair portion of their MCU films and shows as well imo) are a lunchables factory. They're products and a lot of them, especially their remakes, have no artistic value to me.

List of my metas (One Piece and others)
                                            One Piece
Doflamingo
1: Donquixote Doflamingo’s reasons and motivation
2: It’s hard to believe just how much Doflamingo loved his father
3: What I meant when I said Doflamingo had no choice but to kill his father
4: The Dressrosa Arc is interesting to say the least (about how Doflamingo is Shinji to Law’s Bardiel-infested Eva-03)
5: Donquixote Doflamingo and the clan of D
6: Doflamingo knows the WG’s biggest secret, so they hunt him
7: Smiling and freedom
8: It's funny to see the difference in how Trebol and Doflamingo try to talk Law out of fighting
9: How to become a member of the Donquixote Family (and how better not to even try)
10: Aku no charisma
11: The worst card
12: Interesting things about the Luffy vs. Doffy fight
13: Corazon's scars and possibility that Doflamingo has the same
14: Why Doflamingo is my favorite character
15: Another difference between anime and manga (about important details in Doflamingo’s relationship with his family)
Bits & pieces: 1) Flamingos are tough as hell, 2) A great frame from chapter 763: Doflamingo tries to attack the lynch mob, but his father holds him, 3) The Donquixote Family supper and The Last Supper, 4) It struck me that Vergo was the only person in the manga to show compassion for Doflamingo, 5) When Doflamingo defeated Law and took him to the palace, he took his sword as well, 6) Aren't the Marines supposed to protect the common people?, 7) Aren't there too many bottles, huh?, 8) We all live in a society
Monet
The Snow Woman of the Biscuits Room
Lao G
Quite possible it was Lao G who was supposed to perform the immortality operation, since he was the best candidate
Kaidou & Yamato
Bits & pieces: 1) Kaidou has a very sad understanding of the world and relationships, 2) Yamato was such a stubborn child it’s incomprehensible, 3) Ōeyama no Tsuki makes the Wano Country Arc much funnier, 4) It sure must be hard when your father is Atilla, King of the Huns, but it’s strange to expect him not to follow through on his threat when you have no intention of sparing his life
King
Looks like King's been wearing the same haircut his entire life
Lunarians and Ishvalans
~~~
In Rebecca's flashback, there are three seats at the dinner table
dec 11 2023
i made a bunch of sideblogs back in middle school, high school and my previous years of college but whenever i look back at them, i cringe so fuckin bad. so i made a new one because i think for the next two years, it'll be nice to see some growth and whatnot. im not cut out for journaling because i tried last night and my hand started to hurt even though i only wrote like three paragraphs.
i consider myself to be a private person but i also like to air my shit out to the world. whoever reads this... hi i guess. i can only do so much on my instagram spam account. it's just nice to type stuff out on an actual keyboard. and also instagram is a bitch and i keep getting my stories taken down. apparently talking about how much you hate your cousin and wanting throw in a couple punches at a family gathering is just too much for meta. i don't want to get my spam deleted for violating community guidelines. ill probably be on here ranting about her and reflecting on who i am as a person.
i ended up writing like 32 pages in my breakup letter to my cousin. i added a table of contents (17 chapters) and inserted a kung fu panda quote on each page. i actually only wanted the quote to be on the last page but i didn't know how to change the footer so i just left it like that. she can read the quote 32 times for it to get to her brain. it's all about retention. seriously. she just pisses me off.
but im here to reflect on my experiences. unfortunately im a real person with thoughts and an actual life. i definitely talked about this in my 32 page letter directed to my cousin but anyway i am a different person compared to who i was my first year of college. i hated davis. i didn't want to go here. my parents wanted me to go here and other family members pushed me to go here. i wanted to go to sjsu for their design program (thank god i didn't go there). i was just miserable my first year of college because i felt like the choice wasn't mine. if i had a good time in davis, i would be proving my parents right and i was spiteful. so i stayed miserable and honestly, i refused to enjoy anything. the people around me were good people but i pushed them away and victimized myself. i took the easy way out and complained about my life instead of exploring what the school had to offer. i stayed in that negativity and once the school year was over, i started to reflect on everything.
first of all, my ass is from orange county and my parents were 6 hours away. yet, i blamed them when they weren't even with me. second, i realized that being spiteful was not worth it. my college plan was to stay miserable for the next four years to prove my parents wrong but that misery was too much for me to handle. i could feel myself turning into a worser version. i lost touch with my emotions. i only thought about myself and no one else. due to this, i thought i lost my empathy and that was something i valued about myself. when you're able to put yourself in someone else's shoes, you can understand where the other person is coming from. communication is bullshit. you can say that you "value communication" meaning you just talk to a person about how you feel to let go of that weight, but if there's no mutual understanding then it's just pointless. people need empathy. it's not a groundbreaking concept.
so i entered my second year with an open mind. i always thought i knew who i was. but in actuality, i didn't. i felt the need to mold myself into an image i thought best suited me. like ok if im a design major i should be all artsy and shit and hang out with similar people. which is like yeah... i guess? but no one can be strictly one thing. i was watching the kung fu panda movies (they are so good omg ok getting sidetracked) and Po is not just a panda or just the dragon warrior or the son of a goose or son of a panda. he is all of those. i am everything that i like and everything that i do. i joined a bunch of clubs and involved myself in new crowds. i met a shit ton of people who are genuinely so nice and good. i ended up double majoring (not doing that anymore) in econ because why not. i know the type of person i am now. im still learning who i am but im not going to force an image on myself because i want to be perceived in a certain way. i pushed people away, genuine good people, because i wanted to seem a certain way. that's a fucked up thing to do and i'm not doing that anymore. no more victim mentality.
i've always been the type of person to never give up. that's one thing that has never changed throughout my entire life. i grew up thinking my parents didn't care about me or my accomplishments. yet i still tried. my first year of college, i could've failed school and showed my parents how much i hated davis but i never did. i couldn't do that to myself because i'll be letting myself down. just because i hated what my parents did, i wasn't going to let my spite destroy my future. ultimately it would be my fault if i failed school.
that's why it pisses me off seeing people blame their parents for everything. if you're not living with them, then prove them wrong and make them proud? i used to blame my parents because it was the easy way out. i realize now that they've done a lot for me and the least i could do is just pass my classes and do well in school. literally the bare minimum. and if i don't pass then at least i tried.
this is the type of person i've always been. i've never been the type of person to hold grudges and seek vengeance for my hurt. the worst punishment you could do to someone is to work your way up so they can't look at you eye level. i used to blame back then but i don't want that shit to define me. i don't want people to look at me and see how terrible my life is. i want to be seen for my successes and achievements. if people have hurt me, i'll remove them from my life and continue living. i don't want to be stuck in the past because then i won't be able to grow.
when i was "besties" with my cousin she treated me like shit. why the fuck was i writing her apologies, emails, essays (proofreading them too), driving her around, etc. (especially when she's done nothing for me... i don't like her that much to be doing all of that for free). i self-reflect and she steals my words from me. everything deep and meaningful came out of my mouth yet she took it and credited herself. i sat in the backseat while she was talking to her boyfriend. and she went, "i think i tried molding myself into an image..." and then dived into why she had a hard time in sj. she's so shameless in stealing from me. and even during her interview with a dj at the radio station i was tuning in and i texted her how the questions weren't so great and if i was asking them i would go into the creative process and she texted "im gonna ask him that" and then texted "what else should i ask". jesus it was like that dinner date scene in the lucy hale cinderella movie but in real life. i always stayed by her side because we're cousins, grew up together, and that's the way it has always been but my god. she's older than me. i only realized i was getting mistreated when i started telling my other friends and roomies my experience and they looked at me and went "that's not normal."
why the fuck does my cousin act like a disney channel villain for? why the actual fuck was i treated like cinderella? what the fuck. this is just surface level because she bullied the fuck out of me and bullied me in front of my own friends. she can't do anything on her own and she's proud of making people do stuff for her. she's proud of doing nothing. it's so ridiculous. she acts like a child yet complains when she gets treated like one. there's a reason why everyone in our family shits on her yet she victimizes herself. like yeah, i can see why they would say all those things. but she can't empathize and thinks she's always right. she's a narcissist but denies it because she experienced an ounce of empathy.
well. anyway. rant of the day. peace.
El Ciclo Vital en Kung Fu Panda.
Tumblr media
Ciclo Vital: "Es la referencia al proceso de crecimiento y desarrollo que atraviesan las personas desde el nacimiento hasta su muerte." (García, 2002, p.61)
Tumblr media
A medida que crecemos, cambiamos. No somos las mismas personas que antes, tanto físicamente como mentalmente. Como bien definen Uribe y Dulcey (2002) en su texto "Psicología del ciclo vital: hacia una visión comprehensiva de la vida humana." El ciclo vital es un envejecimiento diferencial y progresivo.
Según Uribe y Dulcey (2002), en el ciclo vital, la edad cronológica es irrelevante. La edad en sí, es relativa, puesto que no es un factor causal. Por lo que las etapas de vida que el mundo nos impone para estructurarnos, pierde su importancia, porque estos son inexactos e inesperados. Este mismo argumento se refuerza en las transformaciones que suceden en el ciclo vital de las personas, las cuales dependen del entorno que los rodea, ya sea de forma directa o indirecta.
Cada vida tiene continuidad y discontinuidad, puesto que sus cambios son multidimensionales, multidireccionales, discontinuos y flexibles.
Tumblr media
Entonces, si la edad cronológica es irrelevante en el ciclo vital...
¿Qué pasa con las etapas de la vida? (adolescencia, adultez y vejez)
Uribe y Dulcey (2002) han estudiado que todas estas etapas afectan de manera considerable en el comportamiento de la persona. En el proceso de adolescente a adulto, se destacan aspectos psicológicos que afectan en el pensar, con criterios cognoscitivos (pensamiento abstracto y formal), afectivos (responsabilidad de sí mismo y de otros) y morales (pensamiento autónomo).
Sin embargo, estas etapas no se guían por la edad, sino por el contexto de cada individuo, el cual puede depender de la suma de experiencia, economía, expectativa cultural y social.
Un ejemplo de esto, es el maestro Shifu:
Tumblr media
El maestro Shifu, de la película "Kung Fu Panda", se muestra como un sabio anciano que, después de haber vivido y aprendido varias experiencias sobre el kung fu, decide comprometerse con los deberes de este para enseñar a otros.
Sin embargo, aunque fuese anciano, sus experiencias todavía no acaban, puesto que en esa misma etapa de envejecimiento, vivió la experiencia de la crianza con Tai Lung, y luego con la de Tigresa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Esto nos demuestra que, independiente de su edad, las etapas de su vida se marcan por el contexto y las experiencias que tiene y tendrá:
“varios especialistas en el tema del envejecimiento resaltan el logro de una cada vez mayor autonomía funcional y decisoria, gracias a la influencia de la educación” (Dulcey y Uribe, 2002, p. 19)
Lo mismo le sucedía al enseñarle a sus estudiantes, aparte de movimientos de artes marciales, le enseñaba valores, como lo hizo con Po. Incluso al mismo Po le pide que le enseñe sus técnicas de pelea, como también experiencias.
Uno de los muchos aprendizajes que nos quiere mostrar la película, es lo que se muestra en la escena de la gota de lluvia:
Tumblr media
Esta escena es una metáfora a como afrontamos los diferentes desafíos de nuestra vida: “cada vez que nos enfrentamos a un problema, podemos sentir una oleada de emociones y sentimientos que nos hacen sentir ansiosos e inquietos, pero si podemos encontrar la forma de lidiar con estos desafíos de manera efectiva, podemos volver a un estado de paz y tranquilidad, tal como las gotas de agua que vuelve a su estado original de quietud.” (YT: Cineasta Mundial)
De esto, podemos relacionar con lo que destacaban Uribe y Dulcey (2002) sobre los tres factores que conjugan el ciclo vital de cada ser humano:
Selectividad: Acto de percatar las oportunidades y restricciones de la vida, para luego actuar.
Optimización: Identificación de procesos para lograr metas.
Compensación: Tener la capacidad de regular las perdidas, tanto de recursos como capacidades.
Tres factores que se relacionan con la paz interior que destaca la cultura china.
Tumblr media
Por lo que el maestro Shifu es un claro ejemplo del trayecto que sucede en el ciclo vital de cada individuo, puesto que las influencias históricas de su vida, los acontecimientos personales y las expectativas sociales no siempre van a estar relacionadas con su edad cronológica. E incluso, si analizamos bien su método de enseñanza, esta se adecua a lo que nos explica Geddes (2010) acerca de la teoría del apego en la figura docente, ya que el maestro Shifu trabaja varios aspectos de la vida con sus estudiantes, se adapta al comportamiento, contexto, bienestar individual y colectivo de estos:
“La labor docente influye de forma significativa en la conducta de los alumnos y condiciona, por tanto, sus posibles niveles de logro académico. También refleja la necesidad de considerar las circunstancias en las que se presentan las dificultades de los niños y las niñas en la escuela. “(Geddes, 2010, p. 22)
Es alguien adecuado para educar al otro según su ciclo vital, y mejor aún, enseñándole a los jóvenes lo que es la paz interior.
Okay basic questions time before I get a bunch of anon asks
“Two of these are women.”
Father figures also count
“Some of these doesn’t have their own kids”
See point 1
“Why is there only a few characters from the same franchise going against each other but sometimes they aren’t”
Because I only recognized fire emblem, Pokémon, and JJBA at first.
“Aus doesn’t count”
As a previous undertale fan. I could care less. And I am not replacing Tim with BAMSE.
“Replace x with Bamse”
Sorry but. Findus and Skalman have already won. 3 times are a bit too much for us sweds.
“911 is copaganda”
You see Brooklyn 911 (picked by wheel) and you go against fireback mountain. Shame on you anon.
“Dad council these aren’t all random”
Yeah but Neon J vs Wubbox = chaos
Code of conduct
