RSL won a Tony and Outer Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of gay poet and scholar A.E. Housman, who struggles with his feelings towards his best friend and the love of his life, Moses Jackson.
The Violet Hour by Richard Greenberg. Broadway, 2004.
RSL played John Pace Seavering, an ostensibly straight character who nonetheless shares kisses with another man (played by future House guest star Scott Foley).
Fifth of July by Lanford Wilson. Broadway, 2003 (also Los Angeles).
RSL played a gay disabled Vietnam veteran, Ken Talley, living with his boyfriend in his childhood home and dealing with visiting relatives and friends over a summer weekend.
The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Baltimore (Center Stage), 1997.
RSL played Tom, the fictional alter-ego of Williams (who was gay) in this autobiographical play about his family. Read an interview with RSL about Tennessee Williams.
The Shadow Box by Michael Cristofer. Benefit reading, 1994.
RSL played Mark, the young lover and caretaker of Brian (Christopher Reeve), a gay man dying from an unnamed disease assumed to be cancer. The performance of this 1977 Pulitzer Prize winning play was held to benefit a high school drama teacher in Tuscon, Arizona, who was fired for attempting to stage it due to its homosexual themes.
Into the Woods by James Lavine and Stephen Sondheim. Broadway workshop, 1987.
RSL played Jack (of Jack & the Beanstalk fame) in this musical about fairy tales. No expressly gay themes, but composed by openly gay LGBT icon Stephen Sondheim.
Breaking the Code by Hugh Whitemore. Broadway, 1987-1988.
A biographical play based on the life of Alan Turing (played by Sir Derek Jacobi), so-called father of the computer - a brilliant young man who, during WWII, helped to break the German submarine Enigma code. The play deals with his personality, his love of mathematics and also his homosexuality, for which he spent some time in prison. RSL played Christopher Morcom, a schoolmate who was Turing's first love and whose death, at the age of 17, was to leave a permanent mark on Turing's character. Description from this site. Coming of Age in Soho by Albert Innaurato. The Public Theater, circa 1985.
The play concerns a writer named Bartholomew "Beatrice" Dante, who has fled to Soho to escape his wife of fourteen years and to come to terms with his art and his homosexuality. RSL understudied the role of Puer, an "astonishingly precocious teenager" who informs Beatrice that he is his son by a German terrorist with whom Beatrice had a brief but intense fling.
On Film
A Glimpse of Hell, directed by Mikael Salomon.
A 2001 cable movie which originally aired on FX, based on a 1989 incident that occurred aboard the USS Iowa when an explosion killed 47 sailors. RSL plays Dan Meyer, a Naval lieutenant who questions the Navy's official findings, which blamed the event on a homosexual relationship between two of the sailors.
In the Gloaming, directed by Christopher Reeve.
A 1997 cable movie which originally aired on HBO. RSL plays Danny, a young gay man dying of AIDS who returns home to be in his mother's care (played by Glenn Close). The DVD release date is unknown, but VHS copies are still available.

The Short History of a Prince by Jane Hamilton, 1999.
RSL narrates this novel about the family struggles and coming of age of Walter McCloud, a gay teenager in the Midwest. The audiobook is out of print but you can still buy the novel.

Jeannette Dubois (born August 5, 1932 - February 18, 2020), known professionally as Ja'Net DuBois, Ja'net DuBois, and Ja'Net Du Bois was an actress, singer-songwriter, and dancer. She was known for her portrayal of Willona Woods, the neighborhood gossip maven, and a friend of the Evans family on Good Times. She co-wrote and sang the theme song "Movin' on Up" for The Jeffersons. Television producer Norman Lear saw her in Lanford Wilson's play The Hot l Baltimore at the Mark Taper Forum, which led to her being cast in the comedy series Good Times. She recorded the album Again, Ja'Net DuBois, on her Peanuts and Caviar label. She appeared in former Good Times co-star Janet Jackson's "Control" music video as her mother. She co-starred with Clifton Davis in And I Still Rise, a play written and directed by Maya Angelou. She co-starred in the films I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, and on television in Moesha, The Steve Harvey Show, A Different World, and The Wayans Bros. She married Sajit Gupta in 1950. Together DuBois and Gupta had four children: Provat Gupta, Rani Gupta, Kesha Gupta-Fields, and Raj Kristo Gupta, who died of cancer in 1987 at age 36. what do i write? romance. i write slow burn big love stories for young adults and adults that get prettty smutty (minors dni, teens stay away). they deal with codependency, anxiety disorder, people pleasing behavior, and grief. stories are about coming of age, and learning to thrive despite challenges at home - characters take risks, grow up, and become who they are. i write characters from different countries, as well as lgbtq+, disabled, and poc. currently working on a fluffy love on tour / [can you guess the classic novel i’m playing with?] fanfic, with the band.
current wip with the band. a harry styles au. mc izzy gets stuck at home after college, but takes a bold step to escape by ditching her family to go to a concert. she dives into a shiny new world and meets someone who helps her become who she is… but is he the right one? can she break away from her parents, or will she be drawn back home and end up trapped? i’m trying for almost famous vibes.

Jersey City Theater Center will present a reading of Sibling Rivalries by Marcus Scott, a new play set at a fictional Ivy League school in the years following the Obama Administration. This political drama follows a diverse group of young black men, all members of a fraternity, who face shifting loyalties and eroded principles when they are forced to compete against one another for a prestigious fellowship. Sibling Rivalries will take place at Jersey City Theater Center (165 Newark Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07302 / Entrance from Barrow St., Jersey City, NJ, 07302) on Monday, September 18 at 7:30PM. She was best known for her portrayal of Willona Woods, the neighborhood gossip maven and a friend of the Evans family on the CBS sitcom Good Times, which originally aired from 1974 to 1979. DuBois additionally co–wrote and sang the theme song "Movin' on Up" for The Jeffersons, which originally aired from 1975 until 1985. After beginning her career onstage in the early 1960s, DuBois went on to appear on television shows and films into the mid-2010s. DuBois began her acting career onstage during the early 1960s, making her Broadway debut with a small role in the short-lived play The Long Dream, which ran four days in February 1960. She appeared in the drama A Raisin in the Sun with Louis Gossett Jr., though not the original Broadway production. After appearing in the play The Blacks in October 1963, she became an understudy for the housekeeper role, portrayed by Gertrude Jeannette, in the comedy Nobody Loves an Albatross, which ran through June 1964. Thereafter, DuBois appeared in the Broadway musical Golden Boy with Sammy Davis Jr., Billy Daniels, Lola Falana and Johnny Brown. DuBois portrayed Anna, the sister of Davis' character, through the entire original run from October 1964 to March 1966. DuBois's early television acting credits include the 1969 television movie J.T. and the long–running television soap opera Love of Life. From 1970 until 1972, DuBois portrayed Loretta Allen in the soap opera, in which she was noted as one of the first African–American female regular cast members on a daytime series.
