So I’m rewatching Cowboy Bebop for the 10 millionth time (as you do) and I think I came across a blink and you’ll miss it piece of Jet Black’s history. In the first episode, when Spike goes to see Laughing Bull Jet calls him an old codger. Laughing Bull also calls Spike Swimming Bird. This tells us they both have some previous contact with Laughing Bull, and that Jet doesn’t take much stock in what he says.
However, when Jet seeks Laughing Bull out in the finale to find Spike, he calls Jet Running Rock, and Jet angrily exclaims “Don’t call me that! That’s not my name!” This seems to be a bit of an overreaction to an eccentric informant calling you by some nickname.
I think that Laughing Bull may be Jet’s father. Possibly he ran off, possibly he split from Jet’s mom amicably. Either way it doesn’t seem like he would have been there for Jet much, leading to Jet’s animosity towards Laughing Bull and a native name he doesn’t want.
Do not fear Death. Death is always at our side. When we show fear, it jumps at us faster than light. But, if we do not show fear, it casts its eye upon us gently and then guides us into infinity…

“What warrior is it?”
“A lost soul who has finished his battles somewhere on this planet. A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm where the great spirit awaits us all.
