#legit my decorating skills are terrible #like especially with layer cakes i can't even stack them neatly and frosting the sides fo a cake is like impossible for me #i can make stuff that tastes good but not stuff that looks good #and even then if i underbake it or add the wrong liquid or something it's just ruined or the frosting is super runny or just tastes like sug #this is just me trying to frost a cake with homemade frosting this isn't even me trying to make a cake that looks like anything #i have never even tried to make a smiley face cake #let alone something pinteresty #i can make good things that don't have to be pretty #like peanut butter balls and drop cookies and bars and cupcakes with unfancy frosting #so i could hypothetically be at the skill level where my food is ugly enough to get on the show #but i know how to flavor my food well enough that i might be able to win #however i would defintiely get overhwelmed just like #being in a weird place and not knowing where to go and beign around strangers #and if i thought too hard about the possibility of winning then failed #or if i won even #i'd cry like a lot #i also cry when i'm frustrated so if a bake wasn't turnign out how i wanted it i'd also cry but that's the whole show #i'd just ruin my stage makeup constantly #it would be awkward tv for everyone involved

Slow Dancing

Summary: After learning of a valuable item kept in the possession of a wealthy mercher, the mercher’s upcoming party seems like the perfect opportunity to sneak in. There’s only one problem - the party is a couples only event.

Chapter 1

Anika shifted from where she was standing on the rug in front of his desk. Kaz had thrown out or sold most of Per Haskell’s old decorations when he had moved into the room, but he had kept the oriental rug. It was a very nice rug, after all.

“And…” Anika trailed off, her eyes darting to the painting hanging above Kaz’s head. “The Wraith’s ship docked at berth twenty-two two hours ago. A runner brought this.” She offered out a small, rolled up piece of parchment. Kaz took it steadily, fighting to keep the emotion from showing on his face. He unrolled the scroll, his eyes darting over the familiar handwriting. A quirk of a smile met his lips.

“Is the messenger still here?” he asked Anika.

“Yes, boss,” she confirmed. “He was getting some water, last I checked.”

Kaz grabbed a piece of paper with the logo of the Crow Club embossed on the front. He scribbled down a quick message and folded the paper into a triangle. He handed it to Anika. “Tell him to deliver this to the Wraith.”

Anika raised an eyebrow, but didn’t comment further. Kaz knew she would never spread rumors about his relationship with Inej. “Will that be all?” Anika queried.

Kaz gestured to the door. “You’re dismissed, Anika.”

As Anika turned to leave the room, a small girl brushed past her, still dressed in the liveries of a mercher’s servant. Anika shot the girl an unreadable look before leaving the room, and Kaz pulled out Rotty’s report on the Crow Club’s earnings. Whatever the girl had to say, it was likely to be a waste of his time.

“Boss,” the girl started. Trudie, that was her name.

Kaz shot her a single glance. “Yes?” Trudie was, to put it plainly, a terrible spy. But she looked like the kind of girls Kasper Brouwer, a wealthy merch, liked to employ, with her small size and her soft features. Replacing her would be more of an inconvenience than keeping her around.

Trudie shifted uncomfortably. “I - I got some information I think you might want to hear.”

Kaz crossed out one of Rotty’s markings on the ledger. Some days, it felt like this entire gang was composed of idiots. “What kind of information?”

Trudie was silent for a moment. “A heist,” she said, so quietly Kaz almost didn’t hear her. Almost. He gave her another cold look.

“Close the door,” he ordered. Trudie obeyed, and the door to the office clicked shut. She turned back to him, slowly stepping closer to him, as if she was afraid he might bite her. Well, if this information turned out to be useless, all bets were off. “What kind of heist would this be?” Kaz questioned.

Trudie glanced down at her feet. “Master Brouwer - Kasper Brouwer,” she corrected, “recently came into possession of a rare and precious artifact. A ruby ring, from the Wandering Isle.”

Well. That was interesting.

“You’re certain it’s legit.” He didn’t phrase it like a question. The Wandering Isle had had many rulers, many monarchies, enough royal bloodlines to provide enough blood to paint the entirety of Ketterdam a shocking red. He had no doubt that, if this prize was real, it would be worth a pretty penny.

Trudie was nodding, so quickly that her messy bun was wobbling with her movement. “Yes, boss. I overheard…” She paused. “Brouwer bragging about it. He’s had it installed in his showrooms.”

In his showrooms. This wouldn’t just be a little monetary gain, another droplet in the Dregs’ coffers. This would be stealing a priceless ruby ring directly from a mercher’s showrooms. Kaz’s reputation certainly didn’t need the boost - he was already king of the Barrel, his gang the most feared in Kerch. But he did love keeping the more uptight parts of Ketterdam on their toes.

“What kind of security is it under?”

“I -” Trudie bit her lip. “I’m not entirely sure. I know that… Kasper Brouwer has a rotation of guards in his showroom. And - he got a special case for it. A fancy lock.”

Kaz almost laughed at this.There was no lock fancy enough to keep him out, save for a rare few, and locks weren’t the only way into something. Instead, he kept his features, pulling out an unused roll of parchment and holding it out to Trudie. “I want you drawing out everything you know about Kasper Brouwer’s mansion. Every speck of dust in a dark corner, every cobweb on the ceiling. Understood?”

Trudie took the parchment gingerly, like it might shatter into a billion pieces if she so much as held it wrong. “Yes, boss.” She was relieved, Kaz realized. That the conversation was over, or that he had found her information good enough to plan a heist off of?

“You’re dismissed, Trudie,” Kaz told her. “I expect those plans on my desk by tomorrow morning.” His eyes darted over the pile of papers on his desk. “And send Roeder in.”

“Yes, boss,” Trudie said again. She left the room, leaving the door wide open. Kaz glanced back down at the ledger he had been correcting only moments earlier, but now it seemed dull in comparison to the plans he was formulating. Everything seemed dull when his brain had a puzzle to figure out.

And Inej was in Ketterdam. It had been so long since she was last here, for Jesper and Wylan’s wedding, nearly six months. They had been sending letters, of course, but it wasn’t the same. She was as famous as he was these days, if not more so, and while the merchers whispered about her in fear of their own organizations being exposed, their indentures believed in her, more surely than they would in any saint.

Kaz was startled from his thoughts by someone entering the room. Roeder was there, and he was smart enough to shut the door behind him. “You wanted to see me, boss?”

Kaz set down the ledger. He would deal with Rotty’s math skills later. “Yes. What do you know about Kasper Brouwer? Would he happen to be taking a vacation to Ravka any time soon?”

Roeder’s brow furrowed. “Why would anyone go on vacation to Ravka?”

Kaz rolled his eyes. “Maybe he wants to see the huge swath of darkness that’s now turned into just a normal place? It’s becoming quite popular for pilgrimages, I’ve heard.”

“None of the merchers believe in the Saints,” Roeder responded.

Kaz shot Roeder a glare. “Then where does Brouwer vacation to? Ahmrat Jen? Djerholm? Belendt?”

Roeder shook his head. “Brouwer isn’t vacationing anywhere, boss. His family hasn’t even left Ketterdam in generations. 

Kaz sighed. “Well, what does Kasper Brouwer have on his schedule?” he asked. “A weekend at the gambling dens? A dinner party with all the other merchers?”

Roeder seemed to think for a moment. “He is throwing a party for his anniversary,” he said finally. “He’s been married to his wife, Hilde, for something like thirty years. I think.”

Finally. “Excellent. What do you know about this party?”

“Hilde planned it,” Roeder replied. “She wanted a masquerade ball. Couples only. You could send me in with that pretty new bartender at the Crow Club?”

“I don’t play matchmaker for just anyone, Roeder,” Kaz responded easily.

This was going to be much more complicated than Kaz had anticipated. The party was the perfect opportunity to sneak into Brouwer’s mansion and steal the artifact - Trudie may have brought some useful information in today, but she didn’t have enough experience for him to trust her enough to nab the ring on her own.

He would have to send two members of his gang in, preferably ones that were either really good actors, or were already involved in a relationship. He didn’t like it, but he didn’t like the idea of putting himself in that kind of scenario with one of his lieutenants even more. He wasn’t immune to the way some people looked at him. The only person he could ever trust in that sort of position was Inej, and he would never ask her to do that.

Just my luck.

Kaz pulled out yet another sheet of parchment, making a mental note to get one of the lower-ranking Dregs to buy him some more. He folded up the letter and this time placed it in an envelope, sealing it with the Dregs’ stamp of the crow and cup. He handed the letter to Roeder. “Take this to the Van Eck household.”

“I’m not your messenger,” Roeder protested.

“And I’m not required to pay you,” Kaz fired back, “but I still do.”

Roeder gulped. “Yes, boss.” He left quickly before Kaz could dismiss him. Kaz glared down at his stack of papers. Slowly, he gathered them up, holding them against his chest with one arm while grabbing his cane with the other hand. It was a nice day, and he hadn’t exerted himself much physically today, so at least his leg didn’t hurt as badly as it did on some days. Most days.

The ground floor of the Slat was busy, as it always was in evenings when there wasn’t a heist going down. There was a rowdy card game going on in one corner, with little pastries being used in place of chips, and some of the newer recruits were singing a rowdy drinking song. At another table, some of the older members were having a passionate argument about something. Kaz ignored all of them, heading towards the staircase in the back of the room. He had moved his office downstairs, but he still spent most of his nights in his old rooms on the fourth floor.

He paused when he got to the door to his old rooms. It was open, and a light breeze from the window brought in the scent of smog and something coppery. But his focus wasn’t on the window, but on the person sitting on the sill.

“Inej.”

Inej slid down from where was sitting, shooting him a small smile. “That note you sent was certainly something.”

“Which note?” Kaz teased, returning the smile. “I seem to recall I’ve sent you quite a few.”

Inej laughed, the sound just as precious as the first time he had heard it. She sat down on Kaz’s bed. The attic room was small enough that Kaz could have reached out and touched her from where he had sat down at his desk, setting down his pile of papers and leaning his cane against a set of drawers. Slowly, he worked off one of his gloves.

“What trouble have you gotten into?” Inej asked.

“I think the Slat needs a makeover.”

“Oh really?”

“It’s not nearly intimidating enough.”

Kaz gently placed his discarded glove at the corner of his desk. It was almost funny, seeing his bare hand held up against the other one, still in a glove. Kaz held out his hand to Inej, and she immediately grabbed it. Immediately, the waters rose, but they had done this enough that Kaz wasn’t drowning in them anymore. Her hand was warm and familiar. Slowly, he rubbed his thumb over her skin.

“Is this okay?” he asked.

“It’s nice.” Inej sounded relaxed. At peace.

Kaz sighed. In the dim evening light, she looked beautiful. She was still wearing her sailing clothes, a loose shirt and light pants, and her hair was pulled back in a braid, though a few stray strands of hair had escaped. She had gotten taller in the two years she had been hunting slavers, and she smelled of sea air. Kaz knew they both had changed over time, hopefully for the better.

“Someone brought a heist to me,” he told her as he looked over his papers. “Apparently Brouwer has some valuable ring begging to be stolen.” Kaz noticed Inej’s concerned look. “You don’t have to worry,” he assured her. “I have spies in the Brouwer house and the heist itself isn’t nearly as complicated as stealing that DeKappel was.”

Inej squeezed his hand. He could feel her steady pulse under his fingertips. “Are you…?”

“No,” he answered. “Not at first. Jesper and Wylan will attend as guests to Brouwer’s anniversary dance. Couples only. One of them will let me in, and I’ll get to Brouwer’s fancy show room and figure out whatever lock he has on that case.”

Inej was silent for a moment. Kaz let her think, dropping a correspondence from the Harley’s Pointers from his desk to the large wastepaper basket beside it. The other gang kept trying to insist they were entitled to the Dregs’ new property where the Emerald Palace had once been, since apparently Pekka Rollins had conned them to get the money for the original building. Well, their empty coffers were their problem to solve, as far as Kaz was concerned.

“I can scout the area around Brouwer’s mansion for you,” Inej offered, “if you like. When is the party?”

“This Friday.”

Inej raised an eyebrow. “You’re going to plan a jewel heist in two days?”

Kaz gave her hand a nonchalant squeeze. “How are the seas?”

Inej hmphed. “Why do you always change the subject?”

“I spent a lot of money on that boat. I do hope you haven’t scratched it up.”

Inej laughed, and Kaz couldn’t help but smile as he glanced at her. “There it is,” he muttered.

lololol for me, i like characters who are either vv pretty, someone who i can relate to or their lore rlly grabs my attention. albedo's design wasn't that special to me, and i didn't rlly relate to him that much so i didn't rlly like him all that much. that was until i looked into various theories abt khaenri'ah, and then i started to get rlly invested in him.

honestly, he's more of a sub dps to me? but i feel like he would be a decent dps as well, considering his skill is extremely spammable. he's alright to me, i'm definitely more interested in his lore than anything else. everyone on this blog is turning into an albedo simp lmao

and what i'm not excited for is prop hunt in genshin, i can only imagine how badly that'll go for me. the teapot thing seems cool? but i'll most likely never step foot in it after the first time bc i'm just wayyy too lazy to decorate it and i have literally 0 sense of style so it's just gonna be a whole mess

MAN,, i don’t like albedo. never thought he was particularly interesting or anything BUT THEN, i legit woke up with albedo first thing in my mind and i was just smiling at the thought of him and wow, is this fucking love??? is this what it feels like to fall heads and heels deep in love? is this the ‘i-suddenly-woke-up-realizing-i-can’t-live-without-you’ kind of love? anyway, yes. i love albedo. there’s no specific reason why but i love him and every inch of him and y’all better feel the same because i don’t take ‘no, i dont simp for albedo’ as an answer. you don’t like him? cool well not anymore bc this blog is dedicated to one goal and one goal only: to turn the entire world into albedo simps. on a more serious note... honey that sounds terrible. take care of yourself and be more cautious.. a lot of the governments around the world really are failing in handling this crisis and i just hope that they do better yknow? it’s what we deserve. with that many infections around you, its hard not to worry so im just hoping that you and your family and friends stay safe. get the vaccine if you can. it doesn’t completely prevent infection but it does prepare your body for it and makes it easier to handle the infection should you get it.

The restaurant was nice enough. White table cloths and polished silverware, flowers in the middle of the table and a candle for added ambiance. The music in the background was probably supposed to be romantic and on most days it probably would be, but now that Steve had been sitting alone at his table for exactly thirty seven minutes waiting on a blind date he was fairly certain wasn’t going to show up, the music was just grating and obnoxious and a perfect example of how lately everything that was supposed to be good was just turning into a colossal fuck up. 

Steve hated dating. Hadn’t dated since The Incident almost a year ago that had involved a staff party and too much alcohol and ended with his date making out with one of his bosses. 

Good times. 

And now his friends had gotten tired of him moping around lonely, so they’d decided to set him up. 

“It will be fun!” Maria had insisted. “She’s a great match for you! Bubbly and sweet and a little ditzy so she should make you laugh.” 

“And by the way it’s been so long since you got laid, I’m pretty sure your virginity has grown back.” Sam had added unhelpfully. “Google something before you go, brush up on the ol’ lingo, remember which parts go where huh?”

Steve had been leery at best at being set up, but after some reassurance from Maria-- and after thumping on Sam for the virginity comment-- he had dug his trusty button up from the back of the closet and made sure there was no paint beneath his fingers nails and showed up an appropriate fifteen minutes before designated date time to wait. 

And here he was. Still....waiting....

Seven minutes later Steve leaned over to blow the candle out, already texting Maria that the date had been a bust and this was the last time he was ever letting her set him up and--

“Hey, you aren’t leaving aren’t you?” Just as Steve was getting up, a guy sat down in the seat opposite and Steve froze mid motion. “You wouldn’t mind hanging out another few minutes?” 

“I--- guess not?” Steve sat back down, frowning at the stranger. “Can I ask why?” 

“I lied to my ex and told him I had plans tonight.” The guy smiled sheepishly. “And my plans were having dinner by myself but he just walked in the door and now I don’t want to look like I’m alone. Can I sit here?” 

“...sure?” 

“I appreciate it.” the guy pulled a lighter from his pocket and re-lit the candle. “Candles help with the romance right? Looks legit. I’m Tony, by the way. Tony Stark. You got a name or should I call you Big Blond and Beautiful?” 

Steve laughed because he didn’t know what else to do and his evening was pretty much ruined already so why not let a perfect stranger sit at his table? “My name’s Steve.” 

“Steve.” Tony snapped his fingers at a waiter and pointed to the empty bread bowl. “Smile and laugh like I’m the most charming person in the world and I’ll buy you dinner, alright?” 

“Smile and--” 

“Right now.” Tony hissed, his eyes darting towards another blonde man who was looking their way. “Laugh right now.” 

“Right--”

“Right now!” 

Steve threw back his head and did his best fake laugh, the one he did at board meetings when Professor Coulson made terrible puns about budget cuts at the college, all squinty eyes and lots of teeth and a hand over his heart as if he just couldn’t handle the hilarity of the moment. 

Tony was mid drink of water and cracked up at the sheer cheesiness of Steve’s laugh, coughing water out into his hands and probably out of his nose and grabbing at napkins to try and muffle it. 

“That was the worst--” he mopped the water off the table. “--the worst fake laugh I have ever heard in my entire life.” 

“Okay in my defense.” Steve was laughing for real now. “In my defense, I can’t just throw out normal laughs at a moment’s notice. No one can do that!” 

“Try me.” Tony challenged, his dark eyes sparking playfully. “Tell me something awful, I’ll give you the best fake laugh of your life.” 

“Tony--” 

“No no no, come on. Do it.” Tony insisted. “You gotta sit here with me, you might as well have some fun. Come on.” 

“Alright alright.” Steve pulled out his phone and scrolled through his messages trying to find one of the unbelievably awful jokes Sam always sent him. “Okay, here we go. What disease do you get when you decorate for Christmas?” 

“Tell me. Go on. Hit me with your best shot.” 

Steve waited a beat, and in his most boring ‘Professor Rogers’ voice, deadpanned, “Tinselitus.” 

Tony burst into laughter, his mouth falling open in delight and eyes crinkling at the corners, rocking back in his chair and throwing his hands in the air before running one through his perfectly styled hair and reaching for his glass with the other. He took an apparently calming sip and then chuckled a few more times. “Steve, you are so funny. Oh my gosh.” 

“Oh my gosh.” Steve’s jaw almost hit the table. “How did you do that? That was ridiculously good.” 

“Never underestimate the importance of a good press laugh.” Tony winked, and when more bread finally appeared at the table, he dug right into the basket, telling the waiter, “Hey, I was at table twenty six, but now I’m here. Can you just move my food this way and maybe double it for my new friend? Thank you.” 

“You don’t have to buy me dinner.” Steve reached for a bread stick too. “I don’t have much of an appetite and--” 

“It’s lobster and filet mignon.” Tony interrupted. “And I told you I’d buy you dinner so don’t bother saying no. My feelings will be very hurt if you turn down lobster and steak.” 

“No really it’s--” 

“Very hurt.” Tony said louder and Steve put his hands up in surrender. “And you’re actually really helping me out right now? Dinner is the least I can do and the least you can do is offer me some stimulating conversation about yourself or another flash of those pearly whites because I wasn’t kidding when I said you were hot.” 

“Fine.” It wasn’t all that hard to smile back when Tony was practically beaming. “So, my name is Steve Rogers and I am a professor of art history at the University. I’m thirty two and this was supposed to be a blind date but I’m pretty sure I got stood up which is why I was so conveniently--” 

“So conveniently.” 

“--so conveniently eating alone when you decided to show up and test my fake laughter skills.” 

“Blind date, huh?” Tony dragged the bread through an alarming amount of butter and crammed it in his mouth. “So. Do you think they actually stood you up, or that they came in, saw what you looked like, and walked back out?” 

It was Steve’s turn to choke on his water and as it turned out, Tony’s real laugh was somehow even better than his fake laugh, and suddenly Steve didn’t feel like his evening had been a bust after all.

Somehow conversation over fake laughs and the fate of blind dates turned into questions about Steve’s career and genuine conversation about his passion for art and Tony casually mentioning he was ‘into robots’ before admitting that yes, he did most of the designing for one of the biggest tech companies on the East Coast and oh did he mention he was sort of a genius? 

They were sort of arguing over whether computer animation was in any way the same art form as traditional hand drawn animation when the waiter came by and politely cleared his throat to remind them that the restaurant had in fact closed half an hour previously. 

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!” Steve’s face turned red because he couldn’t believe they’d talked for almost three hours and Tony pulled a wad of bills out of his wallet and shoved several more than necessary at the check as an apology and they hustled out the door as fast as they could. 

“So um--” Steve motioned towards the only car left in the front parking lot. “That’s me. You got a ride?” 

“I tend to taxi places so I can get unashamedly drunk and not have to worry about driving home.” Tony said cheerfully, pulling out his phone for the umpteenth time that night and shooting off a quick text. “Sorry about all the phone usage by the way, I have friends who were slightly concerned about me being in the same building as my ex and I’ve had to convince them several times that you weren’t in fact going to kidnap me and kill me somewhere.” 

He squinted up at Steve. “You’re not going to kidnap me in that ugly grey jalopy and kill me somewhere, are you?” 

“Oh my--oh my god!” Steve sputtered, taking several steps away and shaking his head adamantly. “No! Tony! What the hell? I would never-- I would not-- I am not that kind of guy. Nuh-uh. No way. You are absolutely safe with me. I’m a good guy!” 

“Easy, gorgeous.” Tony winked at him. “I was kidding. But your impersonation of a definitely not guilty person who is no way sketchy was very good. Spot on.” 

“Sheesh.” Steve breathed out a little anxiously. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to over react. I’m not used to people joking about that sort of thing.” 

“Huh.” Tony put his hands in his pockets and grinned up at Steve. “You should meet Bucky and Natasha, that would change real quick. Besides, you’re ‘I’m not a creeper’ speech was more convincing than your fake laugh, so consider that a win.” 

“Right, a win.” Steve felt like his smile was goofy but he didn’t really care. “So. Can I offer you a ride home, or--?” 

“Most nights I’d be all about midnight car rides with hot blondes, but I already got a cab coming.” Right on cue, a sleek black car that Steve recognized from one of the higher end livery services turned the corner and made its way across the parking lot towards them. “So it looks like I’m good to go.” 

“Okay well.” More bummed than he wanted to admit about the night ending, Steve dug his keys out and unlocked his doors. “Thanks for an interesting night? Certainly not how I expected it to go. This was definitely better.” 

“We should get dinner some time.” Tony said all in a rush as the car pulled to a stop in front of them. “Like tomorrow. We should get dinner tomorrow. Or coffee. You art types drink coffee, right?” 

“Um, yeah I drink coffee, but um--” Face flaming, Steve cleared his throat. “And don’t get me wrong, I’m flattered but um-- I’m not-- I’m not into guys. My date tonight was supposed to be a girl. I appreciate the offer, but I’m not-- that’s not really my thing. 

Tony blinked at him and Steve added awkwardly, “I had a good time tonight. i really did. Don’t remember the last time I talked to anyone for that long. But I’m not into guys. Sorry.” 

“Okay, you’re not into guys.” Tony shrugged. “So do you want to get some coffee or something sometime? Just as friends, I promise I won’t jump your bones.” 

“Um--” Steve hesitated but Tony was laughing again and for a reason Steve didn’t quite understand and wasn’t willing to look too far into-- . “Yeah. Hell yeah. Coffee would be fun.” 

“Great.” Tony flashed him a smile that had no business making Steve’s heart beat that fast and pulled out the receipt from dinner to scribble down his number. “Call me. We’ll figure it out.” 

“Great.” Steve stared at the number for a few seconds longer than was strictly necessary. “Thanks, Tony.” 

“Nighty-night.” Tony blew him a kiss and slid into the car and they were gone a minute later. 

From Steve: Okay, so the evening wasn’t terrible. 

From Maria: I knew you would like her! Wasn’t she great? Whoo hoo first date in over a year. Hallelujah. 

From Steve: Oh no, she didn’t show up. Stood me up in fact.

From Maria: Oh no. Steve, I’m so sorry. I’ll put salt in her coffee or something on Monday. 

From Maria: Wait, if she stood you up why wasn’t your evening terrible?

From Steve: I...met someone.

From Steve: Someone pretty great. 

From Steve: I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I can’t wait to see them again. 

From Maria: WHAT? I’VE BEEN TRYING TO SET YOU UP FOR AGES AND YOU HOOK UP WITH SOMEONE RANDOM AND UNDO ALL MY HARD WORK

From Maria: Actually, I’m just glad you’re getting some attention because you have been unbearably cranky lately. Get some, Steve.

Complementary Colours, Ch. 1 - A SuguYaku fanfiction

Based on the one lonely piece of fanart by narcissusbutterfly.tumblr.com - http://narcissusbutterfly.tumblr.com/post/160280804640/yaku-morisuke-snake-trainer-cause-he-knows   - I saw it and it made so much sense someone had to write it.

 Morisuke loved weddings, he really did, but sometimes…sometimes he wished people would take the easy way out and keep it as simple as possible. True, wedding supplied roughly half of his business, and yet in moments like this, he wondered if he couldn’t keep it afloat without them. The woman currently screaming at his face was an image he’d seen up close and personal way too many times, but the bad thing was that this one in particular didn’t have the excuse of being the bride. Said future bride, looking younger than Morisuke’s 25 years, was standing meekly to the side in silence and letting her mother walk all over her. He had to say something, but the shouting woman wasn’t giving him many openings.

- …and I just don’t get why you won’t even try to do it ! It’s my baby girl’s special day and you’re just trying to get your money without doing the minimum required work and I just can’t… - He tried not to sigh.

- Madam, I have been in this business for years and I can assure you, - She opened her mouth to keep going but Morisuke simply raised his voice. – ornamental garlic blooms do not come in red. Any shade of red. They come in purple, blue, yellow and white, but not in red.

- And you won’t even try to find some ? What kind of lazy business model are you running, huh ? Won’t even make an effort ! I will be taking my business elsewhere, thank you very much. I want my deposit back !

- Now, madam…

- No ! You’re ruining my baby’s special day ! Her flowers won’t match the theme colours ! It will look terrible ! Think of that ! Her wedding will be a complete failure, and it will be all your fault !

- Mom… - Apparently, the younger woman was getting just as tired from the situation as Morisuke.

-  How do you live with yourself ? Huh ? How ? How do you sleep at night ?

- Mom…

- I assure you, madam...

- No ! Give me my deposit back ! We have no time but I will find someone who will do their job !

- Mom ! Stop it ! – The word bounced around the shop in the dead silence that followed. The only other customer who’d been pouring over the fertilizer shelf while acting out he wasn’t listening to the conversation, froze. Fukunaga, just glanced up, his usual calm exterior not betraying anything, and then went back to sorting through the carnations. – Just, stop ! Here, we’ll just go and talk it through, and then come back later today, okay ?

- Chiyuki, I am just trying to make your special day perfect. And it will be gorgeous…

- There’s no need to shout at people for it to be perfect. Let’s go. – The older woman didn’t move. – I said, let’s go, mom ! – And then she marched out of the shop like a queen. Huh. She had a spine, after all. Her mother, on the other hand, just glared back at Morisuke, huffed with her nose up in the air, and ran after her daughter without even a touch of the same grace.

- Man, you get scenes like this often ? – The other customer was standing at the counter with a handful of yellow roses.

- You’d be surprised. – The man’s pitying look was obviously exaggerated but it made him laugh. – Yellow roses ? An interesting choice. – The customer rubbed his neck, cheeks going lightly pink. Obviously embarrassed, he scratched at the buzzed off part of his undercut and sighed.

- Yeah, I messed up. I think. Not sure if, you know, he’ll be mad, but can’t go wrong with roses, right ? – The amount of desperate hope was adorable. And the man was obviously doing his best “puppy” impression, with large chocolate eyes shining from under his long blond fringe. There was only one small problem.

- You sure can’t. Let me ask you, though. If you don’t mind, who are they for ?

- Um, this guy I’ve been trying to score a date with ? We’ve been kind of missing each other a few times and it’s not his fault or anything, but I managed to screw up and want to apologise. It will be our first official date. Have to make a great impression and all, you know ? And he seems like the kind of guy who would like yellow roses. Not too forward or romantic, but still a gesture ? Sweet, but not too much ? Why ?

- Because yellow roses mean “friendship”. Or, “friendly appreciation”. – The customer’s face fell. It almost made Morisuke want to apologise for ruining his day. – And I don’t think that’s what you want.

- Oh. No, I guess I don’t. Can you recommend me something else, then ? I am pretty sure he doesn’t speak flower, but now that I know that, I won’t be able to focus on our date because I’ll be overthinking it. Or he could check it out and it will be over. – It was definitely cute how worried the customer was over it.

- Well, if you want to avoid the love declarations and marriage proposals on your first date, I’d say go with…Fukunaga ! – His friend blinked at him. – Do we have any of the yellow roses with the red in the back ? We have only three here. – Fukunaga just rose from the carnations display and disappeared behind the “Employees Only” door.

- He doesn’t talk much, does he ? Yellow with red ? Should I be worried about those ?

- They could also mean “friendship” but I’d say that if he checks, he will read “falling in love”. Better ?

- Much. Thanks, man. You’re saving my life here. First dates, right ? – The wide smile almost covered the shaky nervousness but still. The man was friendly enough. – Oh, can you put a ribbon ? But nothing too over-the-top. Don’t want him to feel pressured.

- Of course.

- He works in this extra fancy café, you know. And I know art and things that go together, and that place is like a designer’s wet dream. – An interesting way to say it, but Morisuke just hummed in agreement and kept pulling out ribbons to compare the colours. – The prices are all right, which is weird, but anyway. It’s super stylish so he’s used to being around pretty things and pretty desserts all day. I just want to make an impression. If you ever need a cupcake that could be on the cover of a magazine… - And then he slid a business card on the counter.

- Trying to win points with him by advertising the business ? – That got him to laugh.

- No need for that, their tea is more than enough. Oh, man, this is gorgeous !

  He’d gone simple, with a ribbon in the exact same yellow as the roses, and made the least pretentious bow he could. It looked, in his opinion, pretty without being too much. And so did the customer, if his expression was a sign.

- You got tattoos ? – Where had that come from ? He just shook his head. – Cool. If you ever decide you want one, give me a call. I’ll give you a discount. – A second business card fell on the counter. – I love it ! Thanks again ! – And with a final wave, the customer left, comfortable silence filling up the shop after him.

 Morisuke picked the two business cards. One was All black and silver, advertising “Terushima Yuuji, Tattoo Artist”, with chains and skills elements, and contact information. It somehow worked without being too much. The man apparently really had an eye for those things. The other was in deep royal purple, also with silver elements, but with much simpler decorations. Clean, abstract outline of a cupcake, looking like it’d been drawn with a silver pen, and the name of the place. Also pretty. He opened the box with business cards he kept on hand – dealing with different kinds of events sometimes called for desperate measures and he’d found out early enough than one could never have too many connections and no industry was too far from catering. It was simply smart to keep everything organised.

 In the late afternoon a few hours later, Morisuke found himself scrolling through social media. The shop was in order, Fukunaga was drawing quietly behind the counter and it was the quietest part of the day. Going on impulse, he googled the studio first. One had to know what their connections were really worth.

 The website listed tattoos and piercing, with, respectively, Terushima Yuuji as the artist and Bobata Kazuma as the piercing expert. Morisuke had never really wanted a tattoo but he had to admit the photos were beautiful. Completely different from the classic yakuza style, they were more Western in design and colours, and were simply beautiful. The piercings didn’t make much sense and he’d never thought people would want holes on those body parts, but, to each their own. Apparently, the business was booming since there were a few warnings about a waiting list and long waiting periods.

 The café’s website was strangely similar. Purple and silver dominated the whole thing, but it was really ordered and, judging by the photos, they were legit and not stolen from wherever the baker had taken the recipes. And, okay, he had to admit his customer had been right. Those were gorgeous. Slowly going down the page, Morisuke couldn’t help but wonder how did the creator, because calling them simply “baker” seemed like an insult, could do things like that. They appeared to sell a mix of traditional Japanese dessers in both their natural look and with one or another trendy twist ( there was glitter, shine and tall chocolate structures ), and, unless he was mistaken, European pastries in vibrant colours. Also, there was a long list of fancy coffee drinks and almost as long one of teas. Impressive.  

 He didn’t usually go on impulse but the woman in the morning had taken all of his energy and he needed recharging.

- Fukunaga. – The questioning look he received was basically a long declaration coming from the other man. – I’ll go get some tea. Will you be okay by yourself ? I shouldn’t be long, it’s close. – All he got was a small nod. Good. He waved and checked the directions again on his phone.

 It was surprising he hadn’t stumbled upon the café on his was to work at any point. It was just one alley away from his everyday path to the shop.

   The customer hadn’t been lying. Judging from the exterior, someone had poured a lot of imagination in the place. Of course, it all depended on the food, but Morisuke was optimistic. A bell jingled when he opened the door and he was assaulted with cozy warm air that carried the scent of cinnamon and apples. Also, coffee. Closing the door as quickly as possible to keep the snow outside, he stepped in the almost empty café. Only one of the tables was occupied, a man in a huge sweater with two laptops and an assortment of small colourful…things on a pretty plate in front of him, seemingly deep in whatever was happening on the screens. Otherwise, it was empty, Morisuke blaming the same lull that happened around this time in his shop, too. It was between lunch break and the end of the day. Also, there was an actual fireplace. Huh.

 Cozy place, he decided, looking around. Lots of bits and pieces scattered around but it looked closer to his flower shop than a mess – someone had taken great care to create such an artistic mess without making it stuffy and overcrowded. He approved.

 The glass display by the counter was a different thing. Unlike the interior, there was nothing messy or disorganized about it. Rows upon rows of neatly placed…he wasn’t sure if calling them “desserts” was good enough, but that’s what they were supposed to be. In front of each row there was a card with the name in both Japanese and English ( or French, or something else he couldn’t recognise ), price…He leaned closer. Also, ingredients and nutrition information. Whoever had done it had covered all bases.

- Can I help you choose something ? – Morisuke didn’t jump only because in his line of work sudden movements usually meant broken flowers and nobody wanted that, especially not him. That didn’t mean he was happy. The guy on the other side of the display had gotten closer without making a sound and his small smile was just a touch annoying, though Morisuke couldn’t put his finger on why.

- Just looking, thank you.

- You sure ? I know we have a lot of things. I started recently and, trust me, the first few days all I did was fetch stuff to learn where it is. It could get overwhelming. – And then he slid the small smile back on his face, shrugging a little.

- You know what ? Sure. My friend likes something called London Fog, do you do that here ? And what would you recommend with it ? – The slow blink he got almost made him laugh. To be fair, the first time Fukunaga had asked him to order him one when he’d done the coffee run, he’d reacted the same way. And he wasn’t even trying to be mean, that was the only thing Fukunaga drank. It was one of the oddities he’s learnt to live with since his friend was a hardworking man who knew what he was about. Just because he didn’t talk much and drank the vile, in Morisuke’s opinion, concoction, that didn’t mean he had something going on. He simply had a terrible taste.

- Well…Let me…Yamaguchi ! – A second man had just appeared behind the counter. Glancing up, Morisuke saw his face was splattered with freckles. Cute. His colleague smiled again and he realised why it bothered him. It came to his face too fast. Looked a bit practiced. – What goes with London Fog ?

 Straight to be point. Morisuke almost laughed at the waiting expression on the man’s face. He seemed to expect confusion and when he didn’t get even a moment of hesitation, said smile faded a little around the edges.

- Lemon cake or pastries. Why ? – The answer had come instantly and the man, Yamaguchi, looked between the two of them. – Is everything okay ?

- Um, yes. This gentleman was inquiring about it, that’s all. I wanted to make sure I was pairing the right things.

- Oh, of course. It’s got a pretty strong flavor so it makes sense. Would you like me to make it while you ring the order up ? It will be faster.

 Morisuke would’ve missed the relief that crossed the man’s face if he’d blinked at the wrong moment, it had gone that fast.

- So, what will it be ? – And, the wide smile was back. Morisuke narrowed his eyes.

- The latte… - More confusion. – The London Fog ? And I’ll have a latte with cinnamon on top. Also…something lemon ? – The man at the espresso machine pointed at the soft yellow sponge cakes on the left. – Yeah, one of those. Thank you. – He got a nod and turned back to the other side of the glass. – Oh, can I have a slice of the…Matcha Mille Crepe Cake ? Thank you.

 The slow, careful way the man was working the till contrasted sharply with the quick nimble gestures of his colleague. Started recently, huh ? But he’d been honest enough, and had called for help when put in an unfamiliar situation, and Morisuke could appreciate that. Though the polite smile was still annoying.

 While he’d been spacing out, his order had been put in a pretty box with a ribbon and a logo sticker. Unless he was mistaken, the ribbon was the same kind he used for centerpieces for events. Impressive.

- …and here is your change. Enjoy ! – He looked up. This close, he noticed for the first time the man had forest green highlights that almost blended with his dark hair, that perfectly matched his eyes, and an eyebrow piercing. And was currently observing him as closely as he was being observed. Morisuke took his change and turned, zipping up his coat.

- Thank you. Have a nice day. – Now he just had to remember the way back. Just because it was close, didn’t mean…there it was. And it seemed Fukunaga was handling it perfectly, judging by the wide smile of the only customer and how fast she was chatting. Good.

 Suguru Daisho didn’t like surprises. He didn’t like them one bit. And today, that one customer had managed to surprise him in the worst way possible. He hadn’t meant to look like he had no idea what he was doing, but what, the Hell, was London Fog ?

- Are you okay ? – He smiled lightly and turned to Yamaguchi. The concern in his voice was sweet but it felt too close to pity for Suguru’s comfort. Not only had the other man seen him deep in confusion but he’d also had to save the situation.

- Yeah, sure. I was just caught a bit unaware, that’s all. – The concerned expression faded to a soft smile. Good.

- Trust me, I know how you feel. I think the first time Kawanishi told me to fetch something for a customer I froze for a whole minute. He just told me to walk around the display and look at the tags. – Yamaguchi shrugged a little. – Not my proudest moment. I actually put cards on the back of the display, too. You know what ? I will go and put them back.

 Great. He didn’t need someone to go so out of their way to make things easier for him just because he didn’t know the names of everything yet.

- Thank you, but…

I’ll be quite honest. I’m terrible at being in communities.

This is a huge TLDR/personal post and seriously, you can ignore. That’s not some manipulation tactic. It’s here for people who want to know genuinely why I keep coming/going the last two years and where my inconsistency is coming from, as well as why I run headfirst into the community and then just disappear without warning.

Sims posts will follow. This is just something I felt I needed to talk about. In short: yes I’m fine. Yes I���m handling things well. No I don’t need crisis care. I’m actually doing well considering. Sims has always been my go-to comfort. I didn’t know about the community until I met @invadersim many moons ago on LiveJournal, and Tumblr was in it’s infancy. As well as the things mentioned under the cut, I also feel like I’ve withdrawn from social media a lot since I turned 30 (I’m 31 now). I just stopped needing to belong and sort of settled in where I was at. Like I said, Sims have been my comfort. Sometimes I sit on Facetime with another IRL friend who also Sims and we just chat like one would on Skype only with our games running and Facetime going on our iPads. It’s fun. She discovered my game is utter chaos incarnate while she micromanages everything. She likes hearing me talk about my builds. I like hearing about the random TV show characters in her game that she tosses in (like the shenanigans her Dean Winchester Sim gets up to). Sims, to me, is ‘home’. The place you return to on holidays when you’ve been away to school or the warm cup of tea waiting for you during a cold, snowy day. Sims is my home away from home - when other games have frustrated me, or when my mental health is doing poorly and I either cannot focus on anything or I’m too depressed or anxious to do much at all. Which, leads into the TLDR portion.

So my last time posting was August I believe. I had just installed TS4 for the first time and was leery. I’ll say this now: I fucking love TS4 and probably won’t go back to fix my TS3 game ever to play it. It became my new go-to comfort and I’m loving that I am still learning things about TS4 that I didn’t already know. With TS3, I knew so much about the game that it started to become boring. I was always adding mods and CC and then just doing the same old boring shit in my games.

Right now I don’t have “Cats and Dogs” but I have everything else, so it’s forcing me to play the rest of the game without the addition of pets. It’s nice. I also don’t use much CC and I have only one core mod in my game (I don’t even use MC right now). It’s just nice playing a completely vanilla game. I can think of a dozen things I want to recolor (and thanks to @blindingechoes teaching me now, I likely will sometime early 2018) but otherwise I’m enjoying things again: enjoying building. Enjoying the gameplay. Enjoying how smoothly things run. But that’s not really why I’m posting. I’ve had my inbox filled with worried messages and I want to address things for those who don’t have me on Facebook already.

Yes I’ve been dealing with a malignant narcissist and yes this person was once a close friend, and yes I knew they truly had diagnosed sociopath behaviors but I also knew them for so long that I had the totally naive thought of it could never be me. The thing with abuse is, the second you think that? It’s likely already too late. I should’ve seen things coming and I didn’t until it was too much at once and I decided to cut this person out (their version of the story is that they cut me out first which is not true, and I have ‘receipts’ to prove this).

This person did truly heinous things to me between the end of January 2017 until October 2017, when things finally stopped. I won’t get into major detail (though this post is marked so anyone browsing in safe mode won’t get to see it, I feel a lot of people following me are slightly younger and I don’t feel anyone really needs to know details) but some of the things done to me over nine months were: having my personal info (name, address, phone number, mother’s name - who is sick (she’s had many strokes and lives with me so I can take care of her) - as well as her personal number posted (ie, doxxing) online to a website which is notorious for some crimes in the past (members who met up and literally plotted to kill their families and succeeded). It’s home to a lot of skeevy, disgusting people and this person literally outed my personal information to thousands of people who are potentially dangerous.

From that moment on I spent three months having child pornography, gore porn/snuff, gory images of dead animals and the type of stuff you’d find on Rotten or Ogrish on my damn phone - being texted daily - by throwaway numbers. I reported this to my phone company and blocked all the numbers I could but it didn’t stop. I did everything I could but in the end I was the one who was losing their phone service as a result of “breaching telecommunications laws” and had to pay a fine of 400-something dollars (I forget the exact amount, I do have copies of the legal docs though), as well as paying to have my phone turned back on.

I acquired paperwork for a restraining order but couldn’t serve it until recently. I have been working with a defamation and libel lawyer pro bono to get this person to leave me alone. They’ve made threats to “skin my cat”, to “throw acid on me in the street” as well as to have one of their junkie friends who is HIV positive “throw their used needles at them like darts”. I have copies of the messages where these discussions and plans were made.

Cops most definitely were notified. It has been a huge drawn out process and they’re basically claiming they’re “mentally ill and won’t go to jail” even though they’ve been harassing and abusing me for nine months straight. There is so much more than what I posted above but needless to say, when this all became really freaking bad I just left the internet. I stopped posting on a lot of places and that was when I came back to the Simblr community then promptly left again.

Around this time I started prepping for Preptober which is the month of October where those of us who do Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) start prepping for November and our novel. On October 29th, right before the Kick Off party our Nanowrimo region holds, our ML (Municipal Liaison) -and close friend of mine- was found at his home unresponsive by another writer friend and after being taken to hospital by them, was found to have three brain tumors. The primary cancer ended up being in his kidneys (three more tumors) and the secondary cancer was the tumors in his brain. He went for surgery immediately and his current treatment is radiation as palliative care. I don’t think I need to explain more where this is going.

November was busy as I had to step up as ML and run a region of 200 writers where we had write-in’s (where you go to write with a group of Wrimos, or what we call Nanowrimo participants) leaving me running these groups 6 days a week (I took one day off) from 6-9pm and sometimes two in a day (9am-12pm, then 6pm-9pm). I have severe agoraphobia and social anxiety so you can imagine how difficult this was. While mentally and physically exhausting (it also screwed with my sleep schedule which is already a mess from a sleep disorder) it was one of the best November’s I had in awhile because I had always wanted to be ML but it was legit so fucking exhausting I had no time for anything else.

No gaming. No Sims. No social media. Nothing. Things have sort of evened out now but since it’s December I’m back to feeling irrevocably depressed (holidays always do that as I’m 1) poor, literally at the poverty line despite being on disability so I can’t afford anything for myself or others at Christmas and this also means no celebrations with dinner or decorations because all of my money is spoken for. As well I have no where to go/no family to be with.

Secondly, I’m finally catching up on the screwed up sleep schedule of November. As a result I’m sleeping 20 hours a day sometimes. I’m awake maybe 10-12 hours and back to sleep again. It’s terrible. I also had walking pneumonia all of November and I’m still sick from that. It’s a huge clusterfuck and things were just terrible. If it wasn’t for coping skills from CBT and DBT I seriously don’t know how I would’ve managed the last year.

ON THE PLUS THOUGH - even though this month is hell and I’ve no where to go, I’m playing the Sims again and plan to post screenshots and random things and re-engage with the community as much as possible. If you read it this far, you’re awesome and thank you.

In terms of uploads and such, I won’t have anything for awhile. I’m using a pirated copy of the game as I have no way to buy it online from Origin (I’ve no money to be spending on gifts and I don’t expect it as a gift or anything so it’s not likely something I’ll be owning legitimately for quite some time). The game version I have doesn’t get updated often and I don’t want to risk breaking my game and having to do a huge re-install just to add “Cats and Dogs” as well as game client updates so I can’t be sure anything I create or recolor will work with your guys’ games.
