“ Moby Dick è il romanzo a cui sono tornato più spesso. A ogni lettura mi sorprende la cialtronaggine, il genio imbroglione, la noia mortale di una costruzione romanzesca che non ha eguali. Appoggiato alla finestra qualche giorno fa mi chiedevo chi, oggi, sarebbe in grado di sopportare la noia di certi capitoli. Io! direi al professore. È la quarta volta che lo sopporto, me ne dia un’altra! Tagli di carne, squartamenti, spiegazioni dettagliate degli squartamenti; navi che passano sopra a banchi di pesci che ignorano i banchi di navi che si incontrano per urlarsi dietro offese e poi brindare assieme. Pesci che ignorano queste navi. Piccoli pesci sui fondali; ma anche enormi pesci sui fondali totalmente indifferenti alla monomania di Ahab, di Ishmael, di Stubb. Il cielo sopra di loro è indifferente ai loro dolori. Non c’è dolore in Moby Dick, né patimento. C’è solo l’enorme sofferenza degli esseri umani di fronte al buco nero della natura e del loro destino. L’esaltazione positivistica per il corpo della balena, per lo scheletro della balena, le sue misure, non è altro che il taglio perfetto della dismisura dei desideri degli uomini del Pequod, abbandonati per quarantotto mesi al largo delle coste di ogni continente per fare profitto, per portare a casa olio e spermaceti a costo della loro stessa vita, e a costo delle follie di un capitano che pianta una gamba sul ponte ogni notte per scrutare il mare e trovare il suo mostro, quel mostro che, quella gamba, gliel’ha portata via con un balzo, e che renderà orfani tutti. “

teru and ritsu are friends in a lot of way but the one i've thinking about lately is how they're both mob-ologists? they both strive to get A+ in mob (spmething both normal to want and possible to achieve) they have mob study sessions where they discuss the creature that he is and write down notes for their ypcoming mob test on saturday (<-they are just going shopping together)

hsdfghs. more thoughts. something about how Dario describes Santi as “normally predictable” in sword and pen, and how that predictability plays into why he didn’t know about the plan in ash and quill, and how he is always a soldier. There’s a certain way things are done, a structure to his life that lasts him through two decades of service to the library, Wolfe’s imprisonment, and oxford. and then he loses a lot of that structure in paper and fire after he defects, but he’s still trying to hold onto it in a way. and it really comes through in ash and quill in how he relentlessly insists he’s fine, everything’s okay, worry about other things instead. it’s his job to be unaffected by stuff like this. he’s supposed to protect everyone. he’s supposed to be the strong one, for lack of a better word. it’s how things have always been. it’s routine.

so what happens in Philadelphia breaks his routine even more. he becomes the weakest member of the group right when they need him. And he can’t let that happen again, so he has to pretend nothing’s wrong. it’s nothing, he’s had worse. Morgan healed him, he’s fine. it’s over, he’s better, he’s back to normal. So he goes back to shoving everything away, and it takes watching someone else (Jess) struggle with what happened in order for him to let himself show that vulnerability again.

Yeah- even when he left the high garda, he kind of kept doing the same job, except now he's protecting Wolfe and the kids instead of library officials. Basically to a point where he doesn't know what to do if he's not busy protecting his family. So when that's disrupted and he literally can't protect anyone because he's busy being unconscious and on the verge of death, he just... really does not know how to be a person. Like he just lost one of his defining characteristics. As soon as his arm sort of heals, he's back to being the this is fine dog. And he stubbornly continues being the this is fine dog until his partner and son inform him that everyone else is also traumatized and he should stop trying to hide it, actually.

(The kiss probably helped too. He was probably more willing to listen to Wolfe after getting to kiss him. Just a theory.)

Un assoluto capolavoro di lirica, di tono e di equilibrio della dismisura. Con Berto si ride tanto, come con Bernhard, e si ride a denti stretti, ma si ride soprattutto col cervello. Bernhard diventa gigantesco per me quando ne scopro il teatro, ma è un dato biografico. Ma visto che non sto scrivendo un saggio va bene anche il dato biografico, no? “
